It’s impossible to select just one reason why a city should rise to the top of your meeting rotation. Don’t sweat it. We’ll risk a little heat by giving you our votes for the top three reasons to bring your meeting or event to Columbia.
It’s Famously Hot Actually, the weather is temperate yearround resulting in the perfect complement to Columbia’s sizzling meeting climate. Forty-five inches of rain falls annually to help cool things down when the mercury rises. It’s All About Location From the moment you land at Columbia’s bright, cheerful airport (yes, that’s right, the airport is cheerful, complete with rocking chairs inviting you to sit for a spell), you know Columbia is going to be a welcoming, rejuvenating place. If the majority of your group is driving in, they have easy access from I-20, I-26 and I-77 — one of only 10 U.S. cities that can boast being at the intersection of three major interstates — while I-85 and I-95 are just a short drive away. Once in town, your group won’t encounter the gridlock that plagues other metropolitan destinations and can easily get to one area of town to the other in less than 15 minutes.

It’s Who You Know When it comes to turning up the heat on your next special event, testimonials from meeting organizers who have selected Columbia for their own event — and partnered with the Columbia Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau when planning — certainly support the claim, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” The CVB knows Columbia inside and out, so your research and planning is a cinch, but it’s the Southern hospitality that comes so naturally to this team as they assist you with your to-do list that makes you almost forget you’re working. Arguably one of the most alluring aspects of Columbia’s dining scene is the proprietors’ propensity to refurbish old train stations, warehouses and storefronts into hot dining spots. Fans love how Columbia is perfectly suited for on-the-fly decision making about what’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Walk along any of Columbia’s entertainment districts, including the Vista, Five Points or Devine Street, and you’ll stumble upon an establishment that lures you in with the smells and sounds wafting through the door. Or you can choose to rely on the expertise of a local to guide your culinary quest.
Columbia offers your group ample private dining and reception facilities for the “official” event, plus enough variety to keep your guests satisfied when they’re in charge of their own sustenance.

In the future, The Esplanade will connect to the South Carolina State Museum and EdVenture Children’s Museum. • A truly unique experience can charm your group when you board The Spirit of Lake Murray, an 80foot yacht that cruises Lake Murray, the Columbia area’s 78-square-mile watery playground. brantley butler Sales Manager
803.545.0059 bbutler@columbiacvb.com The rookie of the bunch is Brantley Butler. Butler is new to the meetings and conventions business, but her professional background within the health and sciences fields is vital for the team’s marketing expansion. She is responsible for marketing to the medical, scientific and engineering markets.
cont’d from p. 26
A:
Prior to joining the Columbia CVB Butler was the Development Associate/Marketing Assistant for Sisters of Charity Health Systems. She earned her B.S. in Marketing from Clemson University. Brantley has spent several years in the healthcare industry in the capacity of marketing and development. Her additional studies in biology, chemistry and anatomy will prove to be beneficial to the scientific market. She is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Fraternity and Chi Omega Fraternity and has won many awards including the Helen Brown Service Award in 1998. In her spare time, Butler loves exercising and running. In fact, she’s participated in several marathons, including the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco. When she’s not hitting the pavement, she’s tearing it up in the kitchen, shopping or reading a book by her favorite author, Jane Green.

Q:
Sales Assistant
803.545.0019 tmiller@columbiacvb.com Taylor Miller is often the first point of contact a meeting planner has with the Famously Hot crew at the Columbia CVB. His vast knowledge of the Columbia area and sharp communication skills allow him to be a great support to the bureau’s sales managers as well as to small meeting planners. A recent graduate of the University of South Carolina, Taylor is no stranger to the hospitality industry as he worked for the Telluride Tourism Board in Telluride, Colorado. While there, he was able to acquire research, marketing and customer service skills. When he’s not busy securing business for Columbia, Taylor enjoys rooting for his beloved USC Gamecocks, taking his black lab to Columbia’s riverbanks and playing his banjo.

Set the Stage for Success The venue for your event absolutely sets the stage for its success or failure. All other planning decisions emanate from the answer to “where.” The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center’s 142,500 total square feet offer planners plenty of options, while the region’s diverse range of facilities makes dreams of doing something unconventional — cocktails aboard a vessel cruising Lake Murray or entertainment courtesy of elephants at the Riverbanks Zoo & Botanical Garden — a real possibility. Check off job No. 1 in your planning by reviewing your options outlined in this section.
Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center Built in 2004, the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center is in the heart of South Carolina’s capital city and is the only downtown convention center in South Carolina, just minutes from the metropolitan airport and interstates I-26, I-77 and I-20.
