MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to join with local arts organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings. OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, art birthday parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more! Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Division. Under Columbia Association, Columbia Art Center is 26 years old. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College. LOCATION Columbia Art Center is located in the Long Reach Village Center (next to Stonehouse Community Center) just minutes from Route 175 and Tamar Drive. DIRECTIONS From Route 29, take 175 East towards Jessup. Follow 175 for several miles to the light at Tamar Drive. Turn left on Tamar and go one mile. Turn right on Cloudleap Court. Turn left into Long Reach Village Center parking lot. Art Center is located in the courtyard past the fountain (look for large round window). From I-95, take the MD 100 West exit (43B) towards Ellicott City. Take the Snowden River exit (3). Enter the roundabout and take the second exit onto Snowden River Parkway. Turn right on Tamar Drive and drive .5 miles. Turn left at Cloudleap Court. Park in the Long Reach Village Center lot on left. Columbia Art Center is located in courtyard beyond the fountain (look for large round window).

School’s Out Program When Howard County public schools are out, come to Columbia Art Center for an amazing day of creative fun. Go home with cool art projects. Bring a friend, make new friends, bring a lunch, and enjoy

School’s Out Youth Visiting Artist Series For ages 11-13 Columbia Art Center is pleased to invite students ages 11-13 to participate in its Visiting Artist Series. The series is designed to encourage young artists to improve their technical skills while acquiring a sense of personal expression. The program provides an opportunity for students to connect with community artists and to cultivate a passion for the arts. Each guest instructor will discuss their personal art and creative process while teaching a unique and challenging workshop. GALLERY SHOP The Gallery Shop at Columbia Art Center sells a variety of one-of-a-kind handcrafted and affordable art work created by instructors and students of Columbia Art Center. The Gallery Shop, which offers a selection of art ideal for gift-giving, home collections, and practical use, includes functional pottery, decorative ceramic works, sculptures, jewelry, fibers, paintings, photographs, glass works, drawings, cards and more! Hours: Mon-Fri 9:30am-9pm, Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 12-5pm Please note: Friday hours (5-9pm) are contingent upon evening classes and rentals being held.

Columbia Art Center rentals are available in our art galleries, studio rooms and Japanese garden. Enjoy a unique setting filled with original

art for your next event. Art displays change regularly. Our rooms accommodate bridal and baby showers, corporate meetings, art and craft group meetings, lectures, art project rentals, birthday parties and celebrations of all sorts, even small weddings. Columbia Art Center provides tables and chairs. Room setup and take down are responsibility of renter. Please allow set-up and takedown time in your rental timeframe. For an additional fee, Columbia Art Center can set up room. Catering is not provided by Columbia Art Center. CERAMICS NOTE: All Fall 2013 enrolled ceramics students can use open studio free of charge to practice their skills. Free open studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramic classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes, and glaze firings for up to 20-25 medium sized pieces (approximately 200 cu. in. each) per session, e.g. 10 week session = 25 pieces, 8 week session = 20 pieces, etc. Students who wish to produce an excess of 25 medium pieces each session will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. GIVE IT A SPIN with Joe Vitek For ages 18 and up Have you always wanted to try your hand at making something on the potter’s wheel? Well join us and see what it’s all about. In this one-day three-hour workshop participants will cover methods of centering clay and throwing bowl and cylinder forms. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon. Students will decorate finished pieces using commercial under-glaze and slips. Please allow a minimum of two weeks for the drying and firing of finished work. BEYOND THE BASICS IN WHEEL-THROWING with Joe Vitek This class will push you beyond your current proficiency level and comfort zone. Creating a ceramic piece requires successful completion of many different and complicated techniques which become easier when broken down into individual steps. Practice and hone these skills and as you do so, gain greater confidence to move on to more challenging projects. Music by Cricket Hollow Join musicians Nick Brienza, Barbara Herschman and Jim Weed as they perform tunes from the hills of the Appalachian Mountains, to the home of the Carter family. They will discuss their music and their instruments which include guitar, autoharp and an Appalachian Mountain dulcimer.

INTERMEDIATE WHEEL AND HANDBUILDING: THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS with Cathy Holt This intermediate class combines wheel-throwing and handbuilding! As you expand and refine your throwing skills, learn how to incorporate a variety of handbuilding techniques to transform your works into more complex and intricate forms. Explore sophisticated surface decoration using unique glazing techniques and oxide and wax


design elements. This class provides a wonderful opportunity for you to hone your personal style in clay and explore the possibilities of ceramics in your future, i.e. art shows and other venues. Gain both ability and personal style in clay. Demonstrations of functional, figurative, and abstract forms will guide you in developing individual works of art. You are welcome to complete class assignments or work on your own personal projects. Assignments may include plates, goblets, figurines, compound extruded forms, birdhouses, beads, tiles, and much more. Explore uses of hand-made stamps, found objects, and alternative firing techniques to make and finish your work. VISITING ARTIST

WORKSHOP Ryan Greenheck Elevated Elegance

This ceramics workshop will explore an array of options to enhance your pots/ vessels with decoration. Initial explorations in the greenware stage will include use of slip, slip trailing, sprigging, as well as trimming. In the glaze portion of the workshop, glaze strategies, glaze trailing, and waxing techniques will be investigated. Upon the completion of this workshop, you will be equipped with a variety of skills to use on your pots/vessels in the future. COLLAGE PAPER COLLAGE: CUVISM (Cognitive Unconscious Visuality) with George Sakkal George believes that art is the visual creative manifestation of human experience. He will introduce you to a methodology that will help access the wealth of your life’s experience stored in the memories of your unconscious mind to create art intuitively. Using CUVISM, a unique methodology involving automatic functions of the retina of the eye and your cognitive unconscience mind, you will be guided by George’s 51 years of collage experience to search, discover and create art composition. Because you naturally possess the resources to create art, no formal art training is necessary. Tuesdays, October 8-November 12, 7-9pm (6 sessions) $105-Residents/$110-Non-Residents

CRAFTS INTRODUCTION TO NEEDLE FELTING with Laura Vernon Russell Needle felting is a dry felting technique that ‘fuses’ wool fibers to a base layer of wool or wool felt. Using specially designed needles, have fun learning the rudiments of two-dimensional needle felting to create a picture made with wool. Basic materials, sources, and finishing techniques will be covered in the three-hour workshop. Supplies will be provided. ITALIAN DECOUPAGE with Susan Kieffer How would you like to turn that drab old piece of furniture into something spectacular? Well, with “Italian decoupage” it’s truly possible! Italian decoupage is not the old art of cutting something out of a magazine and gluing it down to a surface. This method starts with paper napkins and turns into something really special. The finished surface of your project will resemble a hand painted design. This technique can be done on any smooth wooden surface. You select and bring an easily transportable piece of wood (end table, stool, chair, or tray) and have fun transforming it into something that will make you proud. CULINARY ARTS GUM PASTE SUGAR FLOWERS with Susan Kieffer No experience necessary! Have fun creating eye-catching, professional-looking flowers that are completely edible! Learn to make Gerber daisies, tiger lilies, orchids, carnations, Shasta daisies, daffodils, Hawaiian luau flowers and more! You will be able to decorate all types of confectionery creations using these wonderful sugar flower creations. Bring 1 pound of ready-to-use gum paste (found at most craft stores) for personal use. All other tools will be supplied. Monday-Thursday, November 18-21, 6:30-8:30pm (4 sessions) $80-Residents/$90-Non-Residents COVER YOUR CAKE WITH FONDANT with Susan Kieffer No experience necessary. In this mini-workshop, learn how to level your cake. Make icing from scratch, ice your cake, and then learn how to roll out and cover your cake with fondant. This workshop is an ideal introduction to Fall Cake Toppers which follows immediately after at 1:30pm. A supply list will be provided at the time of registration. FALL CAKE TOPPERS with Susan Kieffer No experience necessary! Have fun creating unique cake toppers using fondant, gum paste and confectionery sugar. Explore techniques for creating an edible holiday bow and character toppers. Bring one pound of ready to use gum paste and one pound of ready to use fondant. All other tools will be supplied. Saturday, October 19, 1:30-3:30pm (1 session) $30-Residents/$40-Non-Residents PAINTING ON FONDANT with Susan Kieffer No experience necessary! If you can color in a coloring book, you can do this! It’s fun, it’s easy and it makes you look like a culinary star! Explore how to paint on fondant with completely edible paints. Learn how to mix colors, transfer patterns, and use painting techniques. You will take home your own painted pattern transfer. Your project will be created on a piece of rolled out fondant and your creation will be completely edible! $5 material fee due to instructor at the workshop. Learn how to create all types of flowers using chocolate and candy sticks. Your eye-catching edible creations will include roses, tulips and leaves. Have fun learning how to make ‘molding chocolate’ from scratch. You will also learn how to use various tools to manipulate the chocolate into flowers. DIGITAL ARTS & PHOTOGRAPHY DIGITAL PORTFOLIO FOR THE ARTIST with Robin Abello Create a digital portfolio to showcase your work. Mediums that will be covered include websites, blogs, social networking sites (Facebook/Twitter/etc.) and video (online and DVD sharing). You should have a body of work or a portfolio that is ready to be digitized. Equipment needed is a digital camera. You will be expected to work on your digital portfolio in between classes. Upon completion of the session, you will have a digital portfolio. Tuesdays, October 8-29, 6-8pm (4 sessions) $65-Residents/$75-Non-Residents INTRODUCTION to DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY with Dennis Gilbert Learn the basic concepts of photography through the use of a digital camera and other digital media. Processing, adjusting, printing, and transmission of digital images will be covered. Using the industry standard, Adobe Photoshop® Elements, digital workflow and image adjustments will be presented. Discussion will include composition, proper exposure, and the fundamentals of a good photograph. You will be encouraged to develop your own photographic voice. Then, this is the workshop for you! Through photo assignments, discussion and demonstration, explore camera operation in both manual and automatic mode, and examine the elements of composition and what makes a good photograph. WORKSHOP Benjamin Tellie Painting & Printmaking Workshop An Exploration in Theme and Dialogue with

Create and strengthen your artistic voice by exploring theme and dialogue with artist and art teacher Benjamin Tellie. Participants will explore and investigate different types of painting and printmaking techniques while working towards building an artist journal. Participants will create works of art around different themes, work in groups, share dialogue discussions and engage with reflective exercises about their art making throughout the workshop. Projects in painting will include working with different tools and materials responding to verbal and visual prompts. Printmaking exercises will include some relief and mono printmaking exploring diverse ranges of technique and responding to visual works of art. This workshop is open to all skill levels. Beverages and desserts will be provided for lunch break. Supplies included in tuition. Saturday, October 5, 10am-4 pm 6-hour workshop includes 1 hour lunch break $75-Residents/$85-Non-Residents Benjamin Tellie is an artist and art educator and lives and works in Rockville, MD. He is an art instructor and the art camp director at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School teaching art and design, graphic design, and sculpture to grades 7-12. He enjoys playing his guitar, writing and working on art projects.

Mokume gane is based on an ancient Japanese technique of layering metals to produce a very unique look. Polymer clay allows us to adopt this ancient technique and make it totally modern and practical. Have fun working with several layers of clay, gold or copper leafing, stamps, and more to create unique works of art. Once you have stamped, skewered and worked your clay, you’ll then have layers which you will press onto another piece of the backing. KNOT MY NECKLACE with Donna Weeks If you can tie a knot, you can make this necklace — it is really that simple! You will use jewelry cording (in a variety of colors), glass and wood beads, silver or gold spacers and a focal point bead to finish your project. Using six strands of cording, learn how to attach the beads in sections and then knot the cording together. You will continue this method until your necklace is the desired length. Teacher Biographies Robin Abello is a technology consultant, software engineer, and teacher. He is the founder of Personal Computerworks, Inc. and ezColumbia, a local classifieds service and community information website. Trudy Babchak, Assistant Director of the Columbia Art Center, holds a BA from the University of Maryland and Post Baccalaureate degree in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Joyce Bell received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Art Education from Towson University. Since retiring from teaching art in Baltimore County elementary and middle schools. Bob Coe is the principal designer for Arbitron, Inc. An artist member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, Bob studied watercolor with Morris Green and has been teaching at Columbia Art Center since 1991. Susan Wertheimer David, a potter for over 20 years, originally trained as an art historian at the Institute of Fine Arts in New York. She has studied with potters such as Ron Meyers, Nicholas Joerling, Ellen Shankin and Woody Hughes David Fried holds an MFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art and has studied portraiture and sculpture at the Schuler School and Mitchell School of Art. Kathy Fritz received her BA in Fine Arts from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. After being a drafter for many years, she started beading. Kathy’s love for beading inspired her to launch Bead Soup, an online jewelry store. Dennis Gilbert has been a nature and art photographer for over 35 years. He has photographed extensively and exhibited in the Outer Banks, other Atlantic coast regions and in the Columbia/Howard County area. Cathy Holt has been working in clay for 18 years, starting in high school and continuing through classes at Montgomery College and Baltimore Clayworks. She recently completed her BFA in Ceramics at Towson University. Marlene Jackson received her MA in Graphics Design from the University of Baltimore. She has currently received a doctoral degree at University of Phoenix. Marlene received her EdD in Education Leadership in 2009. Marlene currently works as a graphics designer for the Federal Communications Commission. Paul Kerris has been an art teacher in the Archdioscese of DC for 8 years and a professional artist for the last 13 years. His educational background includes an AA degree and a BA degree in the field of commercial art/illustration. Susan Kieffer has her BA degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She has written, illustrated and published two children’s books. Susan has taught art classes in a variety of media for the last seven years to all ages. Donna Lansman has over 25 years of clay experience working professionally as both a handbuilder and a wheel potter. She has taught various types of claywork to children, adults, senior citizens and the disabled. Deborah Maklowski has been a practicing artist for over 50

years. Working primarily in pastel, colored pencil, and graphite, she enjoys both representational and abstract subjects and is an accomplished plein air painter. Christina McCleary has a BFA in sculptural studies from Maryland Institute, College of Art and an MFA from the Rinehart School of Sculpture, MICA. She works as the Ceramics Manager at the Columbia Art Center and is an adjunct faculty member of Howard Community College. Nancy Ziegenfus McIntosh has a BS in Art Education from Penn State University and an MFA in studio ceramics from Columbia Visual Arts College, Columbia, MD. She has taught in the Montgomery County public schools for 19 years. Jean Marie Mettee pursued a glass-exclusive career beginning in 1991 after taking her first glass class at Columbia Art Center. She currently creates commission and gallery pieces in fused, stained and carved glass at her own studio. Nancy Pollack is a multi-media artist, creating jewelry in Precious Metal Clay (PMC), metal wire, and polymer clay. Her jewelry has been featured in several national magazines. George Sakkal has a BA in architecture from Texas A&M University and a Master’s Degree in City Planning from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. His collages have appeared in award-winning exhibitions. Sarah Snowden has been painting of porcelain for 15 years and has studied with many artists in the field. She teaches in her studio and has given demonstrations at community events. Anna Tai is a retired research scientist with a great passion for knitting, crocheting and loom-knitting. To express her love of colors and textures, she experiments with many different colors in the spinning and dyeing of specialty yarns. Jann Tamburello has been working with clay since the early 1990’s and became affiliated with Columbia Art Center in 1995. She makes wheel-thrown functional work, as well as handbuilt pieces in stoneware and porcelain. Jones Taylor, Sr. is a professional photographer who works in his home studio in Columbia, MD. He was instrumental in developing the photography department at Columbia Art Center. Laura Vernon-Russell In her encaustic works, Laura combines the elements of photography, drawing and painting. Trained as a painter at MICA she has used these skills and her work in photography to perfectly meld the two in encaustic paint. Joe Vitek started with Baltimore Clayworks in 1987, and was a resident artist until 1995. In 1964 he started working with clay while at the Corcoran School of Art. Donna Weeks has taught herself to do many different jewelry techniques. Several of her original designs have been published in national jewelry magazines including Bead Trends and BeadStyle. Carol Zika is an art educator with a MA from University of Illinois. Carol is a versatile teacher, with a range that includes drawing, portraits, painting, printmaking, pottery, metalsmithing and jewelry design


Class Policies & Procedures INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due to inclement weather, the Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth classes. DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed property pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident” tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (member or non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for Action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon request.

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event the Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. Release, Waiver of Liability and Indemnity Agreement In consideration for being allowed to use The Columbia Association, Inc.’s (“CA”) facilities and equipment, participate in any of CA’s classes and programs or avail myself of CA’s services (collectively, “CA activities”), I agree to abide by all rules established by CA. I hereby release CA, its officers, employees, instructors, trainers, agents or representatives (the “Releasees”) from all liability to the undersigned, my representatives, heirs and assigns, for any and all claims for any loss, damage, theft of personal property, personal injury, bodily injury or death, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or otherwise, arising as a result of CA activities. I further waive and covenant not to sue Releasees for any such claims. I am voluntarily participating in CA activities with knowledge of the possible dangers involved, and hereby agree to accept any and all inherent risks of bodily injury, death or property damage. I further agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Releasees from any loss, liability, damage or cost, including attorneys’ fees, they may incur due to my CA activities, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees or otherwise. I further agree that this Release and Indemnity Agreement is intended to be as broad and inclusive as permitted by the law of the State of Maryland and that if any portion hereof is held invalid, the remainder of the Agreement will continue in full legal force and effect. I affirm that I am of legal age, am freely signing this Agreement, and if the participant in CA activities is a minor, that I am the parent or legal guardian of that minor. I have read this Agreement and fully understand that I am giving up legal rights and remedies that I, and if applicable, my spouse, the minor, or a legal guardian for the minor might have now or in the future.
