This summer, Columbia Art Center is featuring its annual theme umbrella exhibition on Friday, June 21 as part of Columbia’s 46th Birthday Celebration. The outdoor show will be held at Lake Kittamaqundi in Columbia, Maryland and will feature more than 30 umbrellas created by all ages reflecting the theme of “Respect.” MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providing artistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to join with local arts organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings.
OVERVIEW Columbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotating gallery exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, art birthday parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more! Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’s Community Services Division. Under Columbia Association, Columbia Art Center is 24 years old. It has been a functioning arts school for more than 30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College. LOCATION Columbia Art Center is located in the Long Reach Village Center (next to Stonehouse Community Center) just minutes from Route 175 and Tamar Drive.
DIRECTIONS From Route 29, take 175 East towards Jessup. Follow 175 for several miles to the light at Tamar Drive. Turn left on Tamar and go one mile. Turn right on Cloudleap Court. Turn left into Long Reach Village Center parking lot. The Art Center is located in the courtyard past the fountain (look for the large round window). From I-95, take the MD 100 West exit (43B) towards Ellicott City. Take the Snowden River Exit (3). Enter the roundabout and take the second exit onto Snowden River Parkway. Turn right on Tamar Drive and drive .5 miles. Turn left at Cloudleap Court. Park in the Long Reach Village Center lot on the left. SUMMER FEATURES SUMMER ART CAMP (For grades 1-8) Columbia Association Art Camp has a new and refreshing one-week format! Art Camp continues to open all avenues of creativity and discovery to everyone while providing a healthy and safe environment. Each week will have a unique theme as art specialists will teach campers to experiment with colors, textures, mediums, and performance methods in a variety of different weekly projects. The campers will experience visual and performing arts processes, including printmaking, painting, 3-dimensional design, collage, drawing, clay works, puppetry, skit creation and much more as they travel throughout Columbia Art Center from studio to studio being encouraged to explore their imaginations and develop their own style of artistic expression(s). Programs include Zumba® dance class and other performance related activities. Camp includes outdoor recreation time and swimming once a week. There will be a special collaborative camp project or show at the end of each one-week session. Campers are grouped together by age. Please note: Campers are not permitted to go to the village center at any time during camp. Bring: Non-perishable lunch, swimsuit, towel, and smock or over-shirt to protect clothing. Be aware that paints and clay may permanently stain clothes. Eight Separate One-Week Sessions: June 24-28, July 1-5 (no camp on 7/4), July 8-12, July 15-19, $255-Residents/$285-Non-Residents Extended care is available at Columbia Art Center: AM-$50/PM $55 per week. SCHOOL’S OUT YOUTH VISITING ARTIST SERIES (For ages 11-13) Columbia Art Center is pleased to invite students ages 11-13 to participate in its Visiting Artist Series. The series is designed to encourage young artists to improve their technical skills while acquiring a sense of personal expression. The program provides an opportunity for students to connect with community artists and to cultivate a passion for the arts. Each guest instructor will discuss their personal art and creative process while teaching a unique and challenging workshop. NOTE: All Summer 2013 enrolled ceramics students can use open studio free of charge to practice their skills. Free open studio is available when classes are not in session. See listing of available open studio hours posted in the Ceramics Studio. Ceramic classes include use of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes, and glaze firings for up to 20-25 medium sized pieces (approximately 200 cu. in. each) per session, e.g. 10 week session = 25 pieces, 8 week session = 20 pieces, etc. Students who wish to produce an excess of 25 medium pieces each session will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. Individual tools and clay are not included. Please no production work.
GIVE IT A SPIN with Megan Trail Have you always wanted to try your hand at making something on the potter’s wheel? Well join us and see what it’s all about. In this one-day three-hour workshop participants will cover methods of centering clay and throwing bowl and cylinder forms. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon. Students will decorate finished pieces using commercial under-glaze and slips. For ages 18 and up. Please allow a minimum of two weeks for the drying and firing of finished work. MINI-WORKSHOP SERIES – BROACHING THE SUBJECT with Megan Trail NEW! For total beginner students and those with some clay experience. This class will explore conceptualizing ceramics as body adornment. BEYOND THE BASICS IN WHEEL-THROWING with Joe Vitek This class will push you beyond your current proficiency level and comfort zone. Creating a ceramic piece requires successful completion of many different and complicated techniques which become easier when broken down into individual steps. Practice and enhance these skills and as you do so, gain greater confidence to move on to more challenging projects. SURFACE INTENSIVE: AN INKLING OF IMAGINATION with Megan Trail NEW! Some clay experience is required. Imagine, ink, and invent! Are you looking for a way to finally unify the two-dimensional with the threedimensional? Then, image transfer is the process for you! In this special topic series, students will learn beginner screen printing techniques, newsprint transfer, and what is needed to set up, create, and realize image transfer onto clay. MASK MAKING with Christina McCleary NEW! Some clay experience is required. Students will have the opportunity to make a plaster mold of their face to be later used in creating a selfportrait mask. In addition, techniques for creating animal and tribal mask from customized hump molds will be explored. Colored slips, underglazes, and mixed media will transform each student’s mask into a one of a kind creation. CRAFTS INTRODUCTION TO NEEDLE FELTING with Laura Vernon Russell Needle felting is a dry felting technique that ‘fuses’ wool fibers to a base layer of wool or wool felt. This technique is perfect for embellishing wool sweaters and jackets. Using specially designed needles, students in this introductory workshop will learn the rudiments of two-dimensional needle felting to create a picture made with wool. Basic materials, sources, and finishing will be covered in the three-hour workshop. Supplies will be provided, however feel free to bring a wool sweater or other piece of wool clothing to try! COLLAGE PAPER COLLAGE: CUVISM (COGNITIVE UNCONSCIOUS VISUALITY) with George Sakkal George believes that art is the visual creative manifestation of human experience. He will introduce you to a methodology that will help access the wealth of your life’s experience stored in the memories of your unconscious mind to create art intuitively. Using CUVISM, a unique methodology involving automatic functions of the retina of the eye and your cognitive unconscious mind, you will be guided by George’s 51 years of collage experience to search, discover, and create art composition. with Robin Abello Create a digital portfolio to showcase your work. Mediums that will be covered include websites, blogs, social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and video (online and DVD sharing). Students attending the class should have a body of work or a portfolio that is ready to be digitized. Equipment needed is a digital camera (preferably one that can also do video). Students will be expected to work on their digital portfolio between classes. Upon completion of the session, you will have a digital portfolio. INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY with Dennis Gilbert
DRAWING AND PAINTING
Learn the basic concepts of photography through the use of a digital camera and other digital media. Processing, adjusting, printing, and transmission of digital images will be covered. Using the industry standard, Adobe Photoshop® Elements, digital workflow and image adjustments will be presented. Use of layers, masks, blend modes, and filters will be covered. Attention will be given to both by getting it right with the camera and using post-processing software to make further refinements. Discussion will include composition, proper exposure, and the fundamentals of a good photograph. TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS WITH YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA with Dennis Gilbert and Jones Taylor, Sr. Do you ever wish your photographs could be more creative and satisfying? Then, this is the workshop for you! Through photo assignments, discussion and demonstration, explore camera operation in both manual and automatic mode, and examine the elements of composition and what makes a good photograph. INTRODUCTION TO COLORED PENCIL WORKSHOP with Deborah Maklowski Learn about colored pencil as a fine art medium with respect to materials, applications and techniques. Explore and gain hands-on experience with a variety of materials and skills, including layering wax-based color pencils on white, medium-toned, and dark papers. The one-day workshop includes lecture and discussion, minidemonstrations, hands-on projects, and a group critique. ONE STROKE ADVANCED LEVEL WORKSHOP: SIGNATURE ROSE with Nancy J. Smith, Elite Level 2 OSCI NEW! Prerequisite — One Stroke experience. Design a floral arrangement on an 8”x10” canvas. Learn to paint the famous one stroke rose, wisteria, and leaves. Most paint is supplied, but you will need to bring brushes and your prepared canvas. Z E N T A N G L E © WORKSHOPS with Deanna Williford, CZT Explore this popular art form of drawing which is an easy-to-learn and relaxing method of drawing structured patterns. Anyone who thinks he or she is a ‘non-artist’ can learn! Calligraphers, mixed media artists, and journal enthusiasts enjoy adding some “zing” to their creations with Zentangle patterns as embellishments. Certified Zentangle Teacher Deanna Williford will guide you in creating the elaborate hand-drawn patterns ‘one stroke at a time.’ This innovative approach to drawing will help you to increase your focus and creativity, reduce stress, and provide you with artistic satisfaction. Ideas for gifts will be displayed during each workshop. Zentangle supplies and books will be available for purchase.
BASICS ZENTANGLE WORKSHOP A $5 supplies fee (for a mini Zentangle kit) will be collected at the beginning of the class. Prerequisite: the Basics Workshop. In this workshop, shading, value, and balance will be explored while you learn more challenging tangles (patterns). DESERT TERRARIUM DESIGN with Carolyn Parsa NEW! Create a miniature garden terrarium in a glass container with live plants that will thrive in your home. FIBER INTRODUCTION TO KNITTING with Anna Tai For ages 13 and up! ROUND N ROUND WIRE NECKLACE with Donna Weeks If you’ve worked with wire before, you’ll enjoy learning one more way to use your skills. This necklace is made by winding wire onto a ½ inch mandrel, securing with 26 gauge wire, and then opening the spiral to create a truly unusual necklace. Connect the spirals with wire wrapped beads of your choice, add some chain and a clasp and you’ve got a terrific new accessory. Please be sure you can make a wrapped loop prior to class. ZIG ZAG BRACELET with Donna Weeks This creation is another of Donna’s designs that was published in Bead Trends magazine and it is so easy to make! You will use fire polish beads, crystals and spacer bars to create this unique piece. By alternating the number of beads in each row, the bracelet takes on a zig zag appearance. So if you have ever zigged when you should have zagged, you’ll love this bracelet. At the workshop, you will be required to pay the instructor a $20 material fee which includes wire, beads, use of tools, and handouts. BRAIDED WIRE BRACELET
METAL CLAY: MAKE SILVER JEWELRY
with Donna Weeks If you have ever braided anything, then you can make this bracelet. It is really that simple. You will use 22 gauge non-tarnish silver wire to make this really stunning, wear-with-anything bracelet. This looks like a cuff bracelet and slips onto the wrist in the same manner. We’ll cut six pieces of wire, fold in half, attach to the vise and braid. Finish off the bracelet with a decorative magnetic clasp. Easy to do and there will be time for you to make two in class. No wire working experience required. At the workshop, you will be required to pay the instructor a $20 material fee which includes wire, beads, use of tools and handouts. with Nancy Pollack It feels like clay and looks like clay, but after a few minutes of firing, your class creation transforms into pure silver jewelry. Make a textured pendant, charms for a bracelet, earrings, or all three if time permits. Materials fee, which includes silver clay, will be approximately $50-60 and payable at the workshop. MOSAIC MIRROR WORKSHOP
Learn the basics of wrapping and complete several projects in class. We’ll cover weaving, making a wire basket and traditional wraps. If you have some favorite stones, fused glass or whatever, bring them along. You can make your wraps as simple or elaborate as you want — it’s up to you. We’ll be using non-tarnish silver and gold wire in a variety of gauges as well as round and half round. At the workshop, you will be required to pay the instructor a $15 material fee. WIRE CROCHET – THE BASICS with Donna Weeks If you can do a chain stitch, then you can make this bracelet! This bracelet is another of Donna’s designs that was selected to be published in both Bead Style magazine and the Bead Style book. You will be using very thin silver wire (28 gauge), lots of pearls and beads in a variety of colors and sizes, and a crochet hook. Once you string the beads on and crochet, you’ll twist the wire into your correct size, add a clasp and you’re finished. This bracelet is designed to fit all wrist sizes because you can twist it to make it smaller or untwist it to enlarge. Please be sure you can do a chain stitch before taking this class. SCRAPBOOKING AND CARDMAKING TOOL TIME FOR SCRAPBOOKING with Elizabeth Ramos NEW! No experience necessary. A slightly different approach that goes beyond the basics when learning how to scrapbook! From paper cutters to Cricut machines, there are many tools to learn and use when scrapbooking. Take this workshop to learn about and test the tools you might want to use for your scrapbook, greeting cards, or other paper crafts. At the end of this class, you will have a wide-range of knowledge about the different tools and techniques used in scrapbooking. With this knowledge, you will create your very own scrapbook layout! INTRODUCTION TO PAPER CRAFTING with Elizabeth Ramos NEW! No experience necessary. From scrapbooking and card-making to school projects, paper crafting is a fun hobby to explore! Rubber-stamping is a technique used most often in paper crafting. It is the process of transferring and replicating an image onto a surface. Learn techniques for rubber-stamping that will improve the look and feel of your handmade creations. You will also learn about some of the tools and techniques behind paper crafting plus the skills to add chic designs to your crafts. In this workshop, you will apply these techniques to greeting cards, and you will receive a step-by-step instruction sheet to create your own greeting cards. Susan Kieffer, a Wilton Method Instructor, will lead you every step of the way as you create amazing hand shaped flowers, and artful bows out of fondant. Course includes learning how to make a fondant mum, rose, carnation, calla lily, rosebud, daisy, and leaves. You will finish the course by showcasing your skills in the design and decoration of your own cake! Class Policies & Procedures INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Howard County public schools are closed due to inclement weather, Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth classes. For information regarding adult afternoon and evening classes and all weekend classes, call Columbia Art Center at 410-730-0075 or check Columbia Art Center’s Facebook page.
DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed property pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident” tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (Member or Non-Member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural Resource Committee for Action.
SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon request.
CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event Columbia Art Center must cancel a class, refund of tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of class. No prorated tuitions will be given; full tuition is required. If you have any questions about the content or focus of the class, please contact Columbia Art Center before the class begins.
ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY Columbia Art Center has a zero tolerance policy for class disruption and aggression towards staff, instructors, students and visitors. Any type of aggressive behavior may be grounds for removal from Columbia Art Center. Columbia Art Center reserves the right to suspend or terminate class participation and usage of Columbia Art Center for inappropriate or abusive behavior or class disruption. No credits or refunds will be granted.
