N E W YO R K C I T Y I S From its beginnings in a schoolhouse in lower Manhattan, Columbia University has grown to encompass two principal campuses in New York City: the historic, neoclassical campus in the Morningside Heights neighborhood and the modern Medical Center further uptown, in Washington Heights.

Today, Columbia is one of the top academic and research institutions in the world, conducting pathbreaking research in medicine, science, the arts, and the humanities. It includes three undergraduate schools, thirteen graduate and professional schools, and a school of continuing education.

A member of the Ivy League, Columbia sponsors 29 intercollegiate varsity sports for men and women which compete at the Division I level. Columbia has won 11 Ivy League titles over the past three years, the most in any three-year span in school history.

In New York, the greatest city in the world has everything at your fingertips. A baseball game at Yankee Stadium, a world-class Broadway show, or just a ride around the city where neighborhoods flow freely into one another, New York has it all. COLUMBIA - 2 - WOMEN’S SOCCER

HEAD COACH KEVIN McCARTHY

Five straight winning seasons, active service within the New York City community and an Ivy League title in 2006. All recent accomplishments of Columbia women’s soccer, led by head coach Kevin McCarthy, who begins his 16th season at the helm of a Lions team that has made its mark as one of the top teams in the Northeast region. Last season, Columbia recorded 11 victories, tying for third-most in program history. The Lions were ranked No. 2 in the SoccerBuzz regional rankings, their highest ever, and received votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll twice during the year, marking the first time that the women’s soccer team had been recognized amongst the nation’s best. Columbia strung together an eight-match unbeaten streak in the middle portion of its 2009 campaign, which included seven wins and a tie. It marked the second time in three seasons that the squad had accomplished the feat, with the first coming in 2006 as the Lions won seven straight games to close out the regular season in a memorable run to the Ivy League title. McCarthy also saw his players garner unprecedented individual accolades in 2008, as Sophie Reiser ‘10CC became the first player in program history to be named an All-American. Reiser was a fourth-team selection by SoccerBuzz magazine, and also became the first player to be named a first team NSCAA Scholar All-American. Reiser also earned the Ivy League Player of the Year award, becoming the second player McCarthy has coached to the honor (Shannon Munoz in 2006). After winning Ivy League championships as a player and an assistant coach with the Columbia men’s soccer program, Kevin McCarthy brought an Ivy League title to the women’s soccer program in 2006. Columbia went undefeated through the Ivy League slate in 2006, including a 2-0 win over then 13th-ranked Dartmouth that lifted Columbia into first place, where the Lions stayed. Columbia clinched the title with a thrilling 1-0 win at Harvard on Aubrey Medal’s ’07CC goal in the 82nd minute, securing the program’s first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament. For his efforts, McCarthy was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA in November 2006. The incredible run toward the Ivy League title was Columbia’s third straight winning season and the culmination of a steady climb toward the Ivy League title that saw the Lions win three league games in 2005 before going undefeated a year later. In 15 seasons, McCarthy’s career record at Columbia stands at 127-105-28. The 2006 season saw McCarthy’s squad tie a program record with seven straight victories to end the season and tie a school record set in 1998 with 10 defensive shutouts in 18 games.

Record-setting is nothing new for McCarthy, who was a member of the 1983 Columbia soccer team which reached the national championship game. With experience on the field as a player and on the sidelines as an assistant coach for former men’s head coach Dieter Ficken, McCarthy possesses the ability to create and motivate winners. He is an artful combination of strategist and educator, and his players respond positively to his guidance. During his tenure as a men’s assistant coach from 1988 to 1993, the Lions received four NCAA bids (1989, 1990, 1991 and 1993) and won the 1993 Ivy League championship. During his playing career, from 1981 to 1984, Columbia captured four of its eight-straight Ivy League titles (1978 to 1985) and was a four-time NCAA Tournament participant. In 1983, he was a vital cog on Columbia’s greatest team. The Lions won their first 18 games before falling in the NCAA Championship final, 1-0, to Indiana in double-overtime. He earned first team All-Ivy League honors his senior year. McCarthy also boasts impressive experience in the athletic and academic development of young people. He taught English at the Horace Mann School and Archbishop Molloy High School and was a humanities professor at Ramapo College. He was the boys’ head soccer coach at Horace Mann, leading that team to the prep Ivy League championship. In addition, he has worked at a variety of clinics, serving as director of the Soccer Dynamics Girl’s Soccer Camp and also coaching in the Long Island Junior Soccer League and the Manhattan, Brooklyn and Bronx region’s World Youth Soccer Clinics. He has worked with U.S. National Olympic team member Mia Hamm for City Soccer. McCarthy was the technical director for the program, which was designed to introduce inner-city girls to soccer. In 1996, he started the New York City Soccer Academy to further those efforts. Along with the NYC Soccer Academy, McCarthy also serves on the board of the Harlem Soccer Foundation and the West Side Soccer League. A noted public speaker, the Columbia mentor was invited to talk to a Fordham M.B.A. class on peak performance and the core values of his Lion women’s soccer program in 2008. McCarthy was invited by the advertising agency Ogilvy and Mather to team with Scott Ventrella, the principal of the management consulting firm Positive Dynamics to present ideas about “Coaching for Performance” in the summer of 2007. McCarthy earned his B.A. in history from Columbia in 1985, and received his master’s in American studies, also from Columbia, in 1990. He resides in Manhattan with his wife, Angela Tessinari, a Barnard graduate and Emmywinning director of the ABC daytime drama, “All My Children”, and their sons, Luke (10) and Wyatt (7).

COACHING STAFF

KATE LYN

Assistant Coach Third Season Columbia ‘05

Kate Lyn will begin her third season with the Columbia women’s soccer program in 2009 as the top assistant and head goalkeeping coach under her former mentor. Injuries cut short her playing career under Kevin McCarthy, but not before she started matches as both a goalkeeper and a midfielder—the only player to do so in the history of the program. Lyn’s knee problems could not keep her from the game, however, as she began her coaching career while still an undergraduate at Columbia. Lyn has been a member of the Region I Olympic Development Staff for four years alongside U-16 U.S. National Team head coach Erica Walsh. She also recently trained and coached a nationally-ranked U-16 girls team from New Jersey, the Montclair Aristocats. “Kate is one of the nation’s most progressive and ambitious young coaches,” says McCarthy. “She models the core values of our program in her bold and creative coaching style.” A 2005 Columbia College graduate with a B.A. in sociology, Lyn also received her teaching certificate in elementary education from the Barnard Education Program. She is currently pursuing a physical education degree at Teachers College with an expected graduation date of spring 2010. Lyn holds a USSF “A” coaching license, which she acheived this past winter. Formerly Kate Galante, she was married to Chris Lyn in the summer of 2008.

DANIELLE LEWIS Assistant Coach Second Season Stony Brook ‘06

Danielle Lewis will begin her second season on the Columbia women’s soccer staff in 2009. Lewis comes to Morningside Heights following a season at South Carolina State, where she served as an assistant coach before being elevated to interim head coach in the spring. Lewis will work primarily with the goalkeepers at Columbia while assisting with recruiting and training sessions. Prior to S.C. State, Lewis was a volunteer assistant at Iona in 2006, where she worked with and developed training sessions for the goalkeepers. She has also been active within the Region I Olympic Development Program. She served as an Associate Coach in Training from 2003-06, where she trained elite youth players from the ages of 12 to 16. As a player, Lewis was a four-year varsity letterwinner for Stony Brook and earned All-America East Rookie Team honors as a freshman in 2002. She was a team captain her final three seasons for the Seawolves and earned All-America East second team accolades in 2003. A 2006 graduate of Stony Brook University, Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree in business management and received her master’s degree in liberal studies from the school in 2007. Lewis completed her advanced graduate coaching certification at Stony Brook and also holds a USSF Level “E” license, a NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma “D” License and NSCAA State, Regional, and National Goalkeeping Diplomas. Most recently, Lewis took part in the NCAA Coaches Academy, held in Denver, in December 2008.

2008 RECAPS & BOX SCORES Hofstra 1, Columbia 0 Game 1 - Sept. 5, 2008

Columbia 1, William & Mary 0 Game 2 - Sept. 7, 2008

NEW YORK -- The Columbia women’s soccer team battled evenly with a talented Hofstra team for the majority of its season opener, but ultimately dropped a 1-0 decision as a Pride goal in the 22nd minute proved to be the difference. The Lions had the game’s first scoring opportunity in the 14th minute as junior Christina Eckhardt moved forward from her right back position and corralled a loose ball just inside the box. Eckhardt sent a bending shot to the far post that appeared to be heading on goal but the ball tailed just wide. Columbia again had a chance in the 21st minute but could not convert. Sophomore Kelly Hostetler found herself all alone in the center of the field from about 20 yards out but her attempt sailed high. In the 22nd minute, Hofstra cashed in on its first scoring chance as a shot by Diane Caldwell from 25 yards hit a Lions defender and deflected past senior goalkeeper Rebecca Taylor into the lower-right corner of the net to put the Pride up, 1-0. Each team tallied three shots in the first half, while Hofstra held a 2-1 edge in corners. The second half would pick up in pace as each team had chances to score. Columbia’s best scoring opportunities came in the 64th and 71st minutes. After a foul on Hofstra gave the Lions a free kick, junior Ashley Mistele fired a rocket directly on net but Pride goalie Krystal Robens deflected the shot over the crossbar for a corner kick. The resulting corner found Mistele in the box but her header went just high. Seven minutes later, first-year Nora Dooley sent a chip shot far post but Robens again proved up to the challenge as she gathered the shot on a diving attempt. Hofstra controlled play for much of the final 15 minutes to preserve the shutout win. The Pride outshot Columbia 12-9 and won the battle in corners by a 5-3 margin.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- A stingy defense and superb goalkeeping helped lead the Columbia University women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over William and Mary at Daly Field in Williamsburg, Va. Senior Rebecca Taylor notched six saves to earn the shutout victory in goal and survived a last-ditch effort in the final minutes by William and Mary. With the win, the Lions improve to 1-1 on the young season, while the Tribe falls to 2-2-1. A corner kick by the Tribe’s Meredith Brown with less than a minute remaining gave the Lions cause for concern as William and Mary attempted a comeback, but shots by Krissy Vornadore and Claire Zimmeck were each blocked by Columbia defenders as the second-half clock expired. The Tribe outshot the Lions 18-7 for the match, but the Blue and White were able to convert on a scoring chance in the early going and hang on late for the win. Columbia scored what proved to be the game-winner in ninth minute as first-year Liz Wicks took a shot from the right side of the box. Her blast beat Tribe goalkeeper Meghan Walker to the left side for the first goal of her career and the first goal of the season for the Lions. In the 33rd minute, first-year Nora Dooley took a corner kick and found junior Sophie Reiser, who fired a shot that was blocked by a William and Mary defender. The rebound deflected to Dooley, who struck a shot on goal that was saved by Walker. The Tribe held a 9-5 shot advantage at the end of the first half, including three shots on net, each of which was denied by Taylor. Wicks and Reiser each had two shots in the first period for the Lions.

Liz Wicks Named Ivy League Rookie of the Week Following an impressive opening weekend that saw her score the game-winning goal against regionally-ranked William and Mary, first-year forward Liz Wicks was named the Ivy League Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week, for the week ending on Sept. 7. It was the first such award handed out by the Ivy League in 2008 and the first of Wicks’ young career. Wicks began her career with a two-shot performance against Hofstra. The Englishwoman put a tremendous amount of pressure on the Pride defense with her relentless style of play, but was unable to convert on her pair of opportunities. Against the Tribe, Wicks’ hard work paid off as she stole the ball from a William and Mary defender and fired a blast from the top of the box in the ninth minute. She was able to fit her shot into a narrow opening and into the back of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. The goal would prove to be the difference as Columbia held on for the road victory against the Tribe, who entered the contest having lost only one match through five games (at No. 9 Penn State).

2008 RECAPS & BOX SCORES Columbia 2, Iona 0 Game 3 - Sept. 9, 2008

NEW YORK -- Fresh off being named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, first-year forward Liz Wicks scored her second goal in as many matches to help lead the Columbia University women’s soccer team to its second straight win, a 2-0 victory over Iona, at Columbia Soccer Stadium. Fellow first-year forward Ashlin Yahr tallied the other goal for the Lions, who improve to 2-1 on the year. The Gaels fall to 0-5 this season. Columbia opened the scoring in the ninth minute for the second consecutive game as junior Sophie Reiser collected the ball on the right side and dribbled to the end line. She right-footed a cross directly in front of the goal to Wicks, who deposited her point-blank shot past Iona goalkeeper Suzannae Baldissard to give Columbia the early 1-0 lead. Another prime scoring opportunity came in the 17th minute as junior Alana Presslaff sent a ball down the right side that found classmate Kelly Hostetler all alone from eight yards out. Hostetler fired a shot on net, but Baldissard was up to the challenge and kept the Lions’ lead at one. With a little less than two minutes remaining in the opening half, Columbia put together a great run that nearly resulted in its second goal of the contest. Reiser made a great individual effort to possess the ball at midfield and sent a pass to first-year Marissa Schultz, who was streaking down the left side. Schultz left-footed a cross through the mouth of the goal that went just high of Wicks’ leaping header attempt. In the second half, two first-years combined to score an insurance goal in the 54th minute. Defender Joanie Bilms sent a clear from the top of her own box and over the midfield to Yahr. The Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., native tracked down the bounding ball, settled it and sent a chip shot over the goalie’s head from 12 yards out to give the Lions a 2-0 advantage. Columbia dominated play in the second half, outshooting Iona 13-5 in the stanza and 23-9 overall. Wicks had a team-best six shots, while Reiser tallied five and Yahr four. First-year Lillian Klein picked up her first career win in net for the Lions, recording two saves. Baldissard finished with 10 saves for the Gaels and kept her team close with a number of key stops. QUEENS, N.Y. -- Despite outshooting their opponents 16-9 and having the better chances in extra time, the Columbia University women’s soccer (2-1-1) settled for a scoreless draw against St. John’s (3-1-1) on the opening day of the St. John’s NYC Nike Classic in Queens. The 0-0 final marks the first time a Columbia women’s soccer squad has came up with a result against the Red Storm on the road. The match was very even over the first 45 minutes, as St. John’s narrowly edged the Lions in shots, 5-4. Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Taylor stopped three shots in the opening half while Kristin Russell stopped a pair for the Red Storm. In the second half, Columbia picked up its play and controlled much of the action. After St. John’s took a pair of shots to begin the stanza, the Lions took the next seven attempts and sent a flurry toward goal with less than ten minutes to play. First-year Nora Dooley fired a shot that was blocked in the 84th minute and less than a minute later, junior Sophie Reiser took another one that got through to Russell who made the save. Reiser took another try at it but her second attempt in the run sailed wide. Junior Ashley Mistele opened the first overtime session with a pair of shots on target but Russell was again up to the task, saving them both. In the 99th minute, Reiser appeared headed for a golden goal but her shot was saved by defender Tara Mendoza to keep the match at 0-0. Reiser would finish the contest with a match-high eight shots, five of which were on goal. A pair of those attempts on target came in the second extra period, each of which were denied by Russell. Taylor finished play with five saves and extended Columbia’s scoreless minutes streak to 358 minutes, 22 seconds. Goals By Period Columbia St. John’s

2008 RECAPS & BOX SCORES Seton Hall 3, Columbia 2 - 2OT Game 5 - Sept. 14, 2008

QUEENS -- A two-goal outburst midway through the second half briefly gave the Columbia University women’s soccer team a lead over Seton Hall. But the Pirates would score the equalizer just three minutes after the Lions took the lead and in double overtime, tallied the game-winner with less than three minutes to play to take a 3-2 decision on the final day of the St. John’s NYC Nike Classic. Junior Sophie Reiser tallied her first goal of the season while first-year Nora Dooley scored Columbia’s other goal as the team falls to 2-2-1 on the year. Seton Hall improves to 4-2 this season. The Pirates took the lead in the 18th minute as Shannon Desmond headed in a corner kick from Maddy Kill. Seton Hall would go into the locker room with the 1-0 lead and held a slight 4-3 advantage in shots. The Lions would tally the equalizer in the 53rd minute as two first-years hooked up. Marissa Schultz delivered a pass to Dooley, who chipped the ball over the goalie’s head to knot the score at 1-1. Less than eight minutes later, Reiser delivered the go-ahead goal off a corner from fellow junior co-captain Alana Presslaff. The lead would be shortlived, however, as Seton Hall reserve forward Ashley Beamish went left side to beat senior goalkeeper Rebecca Taylor and even up the match at 2-2. Neither team would score over the final 23 minutes of regulation or through the first overtime. In the 108th minute, a golden goal by Nicki Gross off a feed from Kaitlyn Rogers earned the Pirates the win and the tournament title. For their efforts, Reiser and junior defender Meggie Ford were named to the all-tournament team. Goals By Period Columbia Seton Hall

Columbia 5, American 0 Game 6 - Sept. 19, 2008

NEW YORK -- An electric offensive performance that resulted in a season-best five goals being scored led the Columbia University women’s soccer team to a convincing 5-0 victory over American University at Columbia Soccer Stadium. The five goals in the contest matched the total number of goals that the Lions had scored all season. Ashlin Yahr registered two goals and helped on another for Columbia, who bumps its record above .500 to 3-2-1 on the year. The Eagles fall to 3-4-1. Yahr would open the scoring in the 34th minute off a free-kick opportunity that was set up by the first-year forward. An American defender impeded Yahr’s path on a semi-breakaway opportunity and drew a foul call from the referee. Junior midfielder Ashley Mistele bent her free kick from 25 yards out far post to Yahr, who headed the ball into the lower-left corner of the goal to put Columbia on top, 1-0. The score would remain the same until the second half, when Yahr teamed up with forward Sophie Reiser for the Lions’ second tally. Yahr again used her head to do damage, as her flick pass found Reiser down the left side. The junior co-captain one-touched the ball past an Eagle defender and into clear space. She would face resistance as she entered the box, but the Seattle, Wash., native shed a would-be defender and went far post past the goalie for her second goal of the year. A rocket shot by first-year Marissa Shultz from the top of the box in the 58th minute helped create the third goal of the match. American’s Kelsey Wiggins saved the initial shot, but the rebound came directly to Yahr who cashed in on her chance and put Columbia up 3-0. But the impressive offensive display would not stop there, as less than four minutes later another first-year player, Nora Dooley, fired a shot over the head of Wiggins and into the back of the net to extend the Lions’ lead. The fifth, final and arguably the prettiest goal of the match came in the 78th minute. Sophomore reserve Piersten Gaines began the play with a beautiful ball down the right side to Schultz. Schultz took the pass and found sophomore Keri Nobil wide open and in front of net. Nobil delivered with her first goal of the year to close out the decisive win. First-year goalkeeper Lillian Klein stopped eight American shots to record her second victory of the season and second shutout. Wiggins closed with four saves for the Eagles. 2008 RECAPS & BOX SCORES Columbia 4, Stony Brook 0 Game 7 - Sept. 21, 2008

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Junior Sophie Reiser continued her stellar play of late, scoring a pair of goals and adding an assist as the Columbia University women’s soccer team (4-2-1) continued its red-hot play with a 4-0 victory over Stony Brook. The Lions had five goals in a shutout win over American on Friday and have totaled nine goals over their last two contests. It is the highest scoring output over a two-game stretch since October 1996 (two wins over Marist, 7-0, and Brown, 2-0). Reiser opened the flood gates in the 16th minute as she took a cross from first-year Marissa Schultz and found the right corner of the net to put Columbia on top. Fifteen minutes later, sophomore Keri Nobil tallied her second goal in as many games off a corner kick to double the Lions lead. With the ball loose in front of the net, Nobil accepted a pass from Nicole Locantore and deposited her shot past Seawolves goalkeeper Marisa Viola. First-year forward Ashlin Yahr would continue the barrage in the 37th minute. Reiser sent a pass into the box to Yahr, who scored her fourth goal of the season to put the Lions up 3-0. From there, the Columbia defense would take over by shutting down the Stony Brook offense. The Seawolves were not credited with a shot the entire second half while the Lions totaled eight. The final score of the contest would come in the 71st minute and would, fittingly, come from Reiser. The Seattle, Wash., native went to the right side to beat Viola and was set up by a cross from Yahr. Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Taylor went untested for much of the match but did make the four saves she needed to win her second game of the season. Sophomore Lindsay Danielson combined with Taylor for the shutout, playing the final 13 minutes of the match. Reiser finished with a season-high nine shots on the day. Columbia 3, Cornell 1 Game 8 - Sept. 26, 2008

NEW YORK -- The Columbia University women’s soccer team opened Ivy League play with a convincing 3-1 victory over Cornell at Columbia Soccer Stadium. Three different Lions found the back of the net as the team won its third straight contest and improved to 5-2-1 overall. Columbia had a chance to score the game’s first goal early in the 11th minute. A Cornell defender was whistled for a foul just outside the 18-yard box, setting the Lions up with a free kick. Junior Ashley Mistele fired a shot far post but Cornell goalie Jodi Palmer made a fingertip save to push the ball wide. On the ensuing corner, classmate Kelly Hostetler sent a dangerous ball into the box. The looping corner found defender Lauren Cooke all alone far post but her header grazed the crossbar and went high for a goal kick. In the 28th minute, the Columbia offensive barrage would finally come to fruition as first-year Nora Dooley booted a blast to the left side that was saved by Palmer. The rebound deflected right to fellow first-year Liz Wicks, who cashed in on the point-blank opportunity to put the Lions up 1-0. The score would remain the same until just past halftime, when junior Sophie Reiser was the beneficiary of some keen passing by her teammates. First-year Ashlin Yahr slipped a feed through the left edge of the box to classmate Marissa Schultz, who was streaking down the left side. Schultz took a dribble and fired a cross to the mouth of the goal and found Reiser, who connected for her fifth goal of the year. Cornell would make things interesting in the latter portion of the second half, as off a corner kick, Brook Chang found the upper-right corner of the net with a looping shot that cut the Lions’ lead in half. But just five minutes later, Columbia would regain a two-goal cushion as Hostetler set up Mistele off a free-kick chance from the left side. For Mistele, it was her first goal of the season. Senior Rebecca Taylor picked up the win in goal, making two stops. Columbia held a 20-9 edge in shots for the game, including 12 that were on frame. Goals By Period Cornell Columbia

2008 RECAPS & BOX SCORES Columbia 2, Manhattan 0 Game 9 - Sept. 29, 2008

RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- Powered by another standout performance by junior midfielder Sophie Reiser, the Columbia University women’s soccer team (6-2-1) picked up its fourth consecutive victory, blanking Manhattan, 2-0. Reiser tallied the game-winning goal in the 15th minute and assisted on the second goal in the second half to give the Lions a comfortable victory. After the Jaspers recorded the first two shots of the contest, Reiser put Columbia on top as she evaded Manhattan goalkeeper Caitlin Trupiano near the top of the 18-yard box and finished to the left side. For the Seattle, Wash., native, it was her sixth goal of the season, a career-high. The score would remain the same until the 62nd minute when Reiser and sophomore Nicole Locantore set up first-year forward Liz Wicks. Wicks went near post for her fourth goal of the year and second in as many games. Manhattan would put forth its best chance less than three minutes after the goal. Courtney McMahon sent a shot toward goal that found the post. A follow-up attempt was made by Caroline Morse, but first-year goalkeeper Lillian Klein was there to make the stop for the Lions. Klein started for the third time this season and has recorded a shutout victory in each of her starts. Reiser would finish with a match-high seven shots, three of which were sent on net. The Lions held a slight 16-15 advantage in shots, but had nine shots on goal to the Jaspers’ five. Goals By Period Columbia Manhattan

Columbia 2, Brown 1 - OT Game 10 - Oct. 4, 2008

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- In thrilling and dramatic fashion, the Columbia University women’s soccer team defeated Brown, 2-1, in overtime at Stevenson Field. First-year forward Ashlin Yahr scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute and registered an assist for the Lions, who won their fifth-straight match, improved to 7-2-1 overall and a perfect 2-0-0 in Ivy League play. Facing an opponent that had defeated then-No. 11 Penn State and tied No. 1 UCLA just three weeks ago, Columbia jumped out to an early lead thanks to do-everything junior Sophie Reiser. The play was set up by a tremendous individual effort from Yahr, who dribbled through two Bear defenders and slid a pass to Reiser on the left side. The Seattle, Wash., native calmly bent a shot into the right side of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Reiser has scored a goal in Columbia’s last six games. The score would remain the same until the 72nd minute, when Brown picked up the equalizer. Alex Michael took a corner kick and sent a bending ball into the box. Columbia attempted to clear the ball but could not, allowing Melissa Kim to get off a shot that was a blocked. Bears sophomore defender Kate Scott picked up the rebound and scored her third goal of the year to tie the game. The Bears looked poised to score the game-winner in the later stages of the second half as four shots were fired at net in the final four minutes. But Columbia first-year goalkeeper Lillian Klein, who entered the game in the 76th minute as a replacement for senior Rebecca Taylor, made three saves in the flurry to keep the score tied. After a pair of shots by Brown’s Marybeth Lesbirel in the first three minutes of overtime couldn’t find the back of the net, Columbia took full advantage and cashed in on its first and what would be their only opportunity in the extra session. A cross was sent into the penalty box and after the ball kicked around for a bit, Yahr connected on a shot from the right side that found the far corner of the goal and would send the Lions home winners. Brown took 25 shots on the evening, compared to Columbia’s 17, and also had eight corner kicks. Both Taylor and Klein recorded four saves each while Brenna Hogue stopped seven shots for the Bears. 2008 RECAPS & BOX SCORES Columbia 4, Long Island 0 Game 11 - Oct. 6, 2008

NEW YORK -- Reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week Ashlin Yahr tallied a pair of goals and junior Sophie Reiser set a career high as she assisted on three of Columbia’s four scores to help lead the women’s soccer team to a dominant 4-0 win over Long Island at Columbia Soccer Stadium. The victory extended the Lions’ winning streak to six games and improved their overall record to 8-2-1. Columbia broke the scoreless deadlock just over a half hour into the match when Yahr sent a pass from the left wing that found sophomore Keri Nobil at the top of the box. Nobil collected the ball and sent a blast to the far post, past the outstretched arms of the LIU goalkeeper to give Columbia a 1-0 lead. The Lions further asserted themselves in the second half, adding to their lead in the 58th minute when Reiser lofted a pass from 20 yards out to first-year Nora Dooley, who was streaking down the sideline. Dooley found herself wide-open and redirected the ball to the far post for a 2-0 lead. Reiser struck again just over a minute later for the Lions when she sent a pass down the left sideline to Yahr, who evaded the onrushing goalkeeper and tapped her shot into an unattended net. The pair later combined on their second goal of the night in the 63rd minute when Reiser sent a looping cross into the box that Yahr nodded into the net from six yards away, making it 4-0. For Yahr, it was the seventh goal she has scored this season and tied her with Reiser for the team lead. Goals By Period Long Island Columbia

Columbia 1, Penn 1 - 2 0T Game 12 - Oct. 10, 2008

PHILADELPHIA -- The Columbia University women’s soccer team battled to a hard-fought 1-1 tie against Penn at Rhodes Field. Junior Sophie Reiser extended her point-scoring streak to eight games with her eighth goal of the year for the Lions, who moved to 8-2-2 on the season and 2-0-1 in Ivy League play. The Lions had a scoring chance in the 20th minute as sophomore Kelly Hostetler took a corner kick from the left side. Hostetler’s ball went far post where junior Ashley Mistele made a leaping header attempt that sailed just high. Just three minutes later, another corner by Hostetler produced a chance at the right side of the box. After a failed clearing attempt by a Quakers, first-year Nora Dooley fired a shot that was blocked by a defender and cleared. Columbia finally broke through in the 33rd minute off a free kick by sophomore defender Lauren Cooke. Cooke sent a beautiful ball into the middle of the box that Reiser had a beat on. After Penn goalie Sara Rose knocked the ball away, first-year Ashlin Yahr got a shot off that was blocked. The deflected ball kicked to Dooley, who blasted an attempt that Rose made a brilliant diving stop on. The rebound then found the right foot of Reiser, who went top shelf to put the Lions up 1-0. After the break, Penn controlled the pace of play for the first ten minutes and made it a tenuous time for the Columbia defense. In a transition play off a Columbia offensive rush, the Quakers knotted the match up at 1-1 in the 70th minute. Crisp passing up the field led to a through ball from Marin McDermott that found Mara Fintzi, who slid a shot underneath a diving Rebecca Taylor for the equalizer. The Lions nearly had the game-winner in the final minute of regulation. Reiser took a ball down the left side, dribbled between a pair of defenders and fired a cross that just missed the head of Dooley far post with 17 seconds remaining. Halfway through the first overtime, the Lions again had an opportunity to put the game away as first-year Marissa Schultz made a stop-and-go move down the right side. Her cross found Yahr near post, who headed the ball just wide. In double-overtime, Penn had the first chance as Marin McDermott dribbled into the box all alone. Lions keeper Taylor came off her line and made a diving stop from 10 yards out to keep the game tied. The two teams would battle to a stalemate for the remainder of the second overtime period. The Lions held the shot advantage for the match, 14-10, while the Quakers had the edge in corners, 7-6. Goals By Period Columbia Penn

2008 RECAPS & BOX SCORES Columbia 6, Marist 1 Game 13 - Oct. 12, 2008

NEW YORK -- First-year midfielder Nora Dooley had two goals and junior Sophie Reiser added a goal and two assists as the Columbia University women’s soccer team scored five times in the second half in a 6-1 drubbing of Marist at Columbia Soccer Stadium. The Lions pushed their unbeaten streak to eight games, one away from the school-record of nine games, which was set in 1998. The offense was clicking early as junior Ashley Mistele scored the game’s first goal in the sixth minute. Sophomore Kelly Hostetler took a corner kick from the right side and left-footed a ball far post to Mistele, who headed home her second goal of the year to put Columbia on top, 1-0. The Lions had a slew of opportunities in the first half but failed to convert. Their best chance came in the 26th minute as Hostetler again served a corner into the box. Reiser was able to get a clean header on the pass but Marist goalkeeper Anna Case made a lunging save to deny her. The rebound went to Dooley, who had her attempt blocked, and another shot by Reiser was also blocked before the Red Foxes cleared. In the second half, Columbia was able to double its lead just 27 seconds into the stanza. First-year forward Ashlin Yahr sent a through ball to Reiser, who blasted a shot through a small space near post. The Seattle native leads the team with nine goals and the tally extends her personal point-scoring streak to nine. Dooley would make her presence known in the 61st and 63rd minutes. Her first goal was a header off a free kick by sophomore defender Lauren Cooke. Cooke booted a ball into the box and found Dooley, who flicked the ball over Case’s head and into the net. Just two minutes later, Reiser played a ball through the box down the right side to first-year Lindsay Mushett. Mushett one-touched a cross to Dooley, who bent a shot into the top-right corner of the goal to push Columbia’s lead to 4-0. Marist would battle back for a goal in the 80th minute as Kristine Horwitz made a sliding shot attempt from the top of the box that beat sophomore Lindsay Danielson on the left side to cut into the Lions lead. But momentum for Marist would be short-lived, as Yahr converted her eighth goal of the year in the 81st minute. Reiser took a free kick from 35 yards out and connected with sophomore Nicole Locantore. Locantore headed the ball far post to Yahr, who finished at the goal line. Sophomore Keri Nobil would round out the scoring one minute and 34 seconds later as she kneed in a cross from first-year Joanie Bilms. Lillian Klein started in goal made four stops to pick up her sixth win of the year. The first-year has not allowed a goal yet this season in 439 minutes and 42 seconds of action. NEW YORK -- The Columbia University women’s soccer team dropped its first Ivy League match of the season, falling to Princeton, 2-1, in double overtime at Columbia Soccer Stadium. The Tigers benefited from an own goal on the Lions early in the match and were able to tally the golden goal in the 108th minute of the game on a perfectly-struck ball by Sarah Peteraf. First-year midfielder Nora Dooley registered her sixth goal of the year for Columbia, who fell to 9-3-2 on the year and 2-1-1 in the Ivy League. Princeton got on the board in the sixth minute as Lisa Chinn sent a cross from the right side. A Lions defender attempted to clear the ball out of bounds, but headed it into the back of the net instead to put the Tigers up 1-0. Columbia would come right back in the 13th minute as Dooley received a perfectly-placed ball from junior Sophie Reiser far post. The Needham, Mass., native collected the pass and finished to knot the game at 1-1. From there, each team would have their chances over the rest of regulation but could not get the go-ahead goal. Princeton outshot the Lions 12-8 over the course of the first 90 minutes and had eight corner kicks to Columbia’s six. In the first overtime period, the Lions had a few great chances, with their best coming in the 93rd minute. First-year Ashlin Yahr made a run up the left side as classmate Liz Wicks booted a looping left-footed pass to her. Yahr caught up to the ball and got a shot off but Princeton goalkeeper Alyssa Pont came off her line to make a diving stop and keep the game tied. In the second extra session, a giveaway by Columbia gave the Tigers the ball in their attacking half. Barb Previ took the ball and sent a pass to Sarah Peteraf, who fired a shot to the lower right corner of the goal to give Princeton the victory. 2008 RECAPS & BOX SCORES Columbia 3, Dartmouth 1 Game 15 - Oct. 24, 2008

NEW YORK -- Junior forward Sophie Reiser scored her first career hat trick and senior Rebecca Taylor made a couple of tremendous saves in net in the final home game of her career as the Columbia University women’s soccer team pushed past Dartmouth, 3-1, at Columbia Soccer Stadium. The Lions improved to 10-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in Ivy League play. Reiser has now tallied a point in 11 consecutive matches and has 33 points on the year, which ranks second in Columbia’s all-time single season record book. First-year forward Liz Wicks played a big part in the first goal as she dribbled 45 yards down the right side in the fifth minute and fired a cross into the box. Reiser was in perfect position in front of the net and headed in her 10th goal of the season to put Columbia ahead, 1-0. Just over three minutes later, Reiser struck again thanks in part to another tremendous run by a first-year player. Ashlin Yahr dribbled to the flag on the left side, cut back inside and dropped a pass for Reiser, who blasted a shot from 12 yards out past reigning Ivy League Player of the Week Laurel Peak to give the Lions a 2-0 advantage. Dartmouth would mount a charge just seconds later as Becky Poskin took a pass near midfield and was all alone. But Taylor came off her line and made a sliding save just outside the 18-yard box to keep the Big Green off the board. For the second consecutive week, a bad break led to a score for the opposition. Dartmouth was able to put some pressure on the Columbia defense in the 42nd minute and ultimately earned a corner kick. The Big Green booted the corner into the box and a Lions’ player, in an attempt to clear, headed the ball into the upper-right corner of the goal to cut the team’s lead to 2-1. Princeton also had an own goal against Columbia last week. Determined to fight through the misfortune, the Lions came out fired up to start the second half and it was again Reiser who was in the middle of the action. The Seattle native fought through a bevy of Big Green defenders in front of the net and somehow managed to get a foot on the ball and kick it past Peak for her 12th goal of the year. The three-goal effort moves Reiser into sole possession of second place on the all-time single season goal scoring list. In the 86th minute, Reiser nearly scored her fourth goal of the game when she sailed in without a defender near her on the left side. Her rightfooted attempt appeared headed for the far post but it slid just wide, thanks in part to a fingertip save by Peak. For the match, Dartmouth edged the Lions in shots, 15-14, and in corners, 7-4. Taylor had eight saves in net for Columbia, while Peak also closed with eight. Prior to the contest, Taylor and fellow senior Sara Ann Bennett were honored in a ceremony at midfield for their contributions to the Columbia women’s soccer team over the past four years. Columbia 2, Yale 1 Game 16 - Nov. 1, 2008

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Taylor was brilliant in net, making several acrobatic stops in the final minutes of play to help lead the Columbia University women’s soccer team to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Yale at Reese Stadium. Sophomore Chrissy Butler and first-year Ashlin Yahr had the goals for Columbia, who improved to 11-3-2 on the year and 4-1-1 in Ivy League play. By virtue of Harvard’s 1-1 tie against Dartmouth and Princeton’s 4-0 victory over Cornell, the Lions sat in a three-way tie atop the Ivy League with Princeton and Harvard with one game remaining for each. With just under 15 minutes remaining and the Lions clinging to a 2-1 lead, a miraculous save by Taylor kept the Lions on top. Megan Ashforth took a shot from just outside the box that deflected off a defender. Taylor dove to her right to stop the initial shot and reached back with her left hand to stonewall the redirect. Anxious moments were plentiful down the stretch, and it would be Taylor who would again squash the Bulldogs’ chances in the 84th minute. A few connective passes led to a shot by Yale’s Maggie Westfal from eight yards away. Westfal’s attempt would trickle slowly toward the goal line with no Columbia player behind it, but Taylor dove back and corralled the ball just before it crossed the line and preserved the lead. Columbia had a scoring opportunity less than two minutes into the contest. Off the kickoff, the Lions would earn a corner kick and sophomore Kelly Hostetler sent a ball to the box. Yale goalkeeper Ayana Sumiyasu tried to punch the ball to clear it but failed and a scramble ensued. The ball came perilously close to crossing the goal line but bounced out to junior Alana Presslaff, who got off a shot that was saved by Sumiyasu. Junior defender Meggie Ford would save the day for the Lions in the 25th minute. Taylor took herself out of position after coming out to contest a shot. A blast from Natalia Mann looked headed for the back of the net but Ford calmly headed it away at the goal line to keep the game scoreless. A corner kick in the 55th minute gave Yale the lead. Mann took the corner and found Sophia Merrifield far post, who headed it in to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Right off the ensuing kickoff, Columbia responded with the equalizer in lightning-quick fashion. Junior Sophie Reiser took the kickoff and dribbled straight through the Yale defense, slipping a through ball to Yahr at the top of the 18-yard box. Yahr fired a rocket past Sumiyasu on the near side to knot the score just 13 seconds after the Bulldogs’ tally. The pace would remain frenetic and the play scrambled after the tying score, and in the 63rd minute, Columbia would go on top off a corner kick. Hostetler took the opportunity and sent a ball in front of the net. After a mad dash where two players missed on chances, Butler finally kneed in a shot for her first goal of the season. Yale outshot the Lions, 21-14, and had a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks. Reiser led the team with four shots and with the assist on Yahr’s goal, extends her point-scoring streak to 12. 2008 RECAPS & BOX SCORES Harvard 2, Columbia 1 - 2OT Game 17 - Nov. 8, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Harvard junior defender Lizzy Nichols converted on a penalty kick with just nine seconds remaining in the second overtime as the Columbia University women’s soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to the Crimson at Ohiri Field. With the victory, Harvard picks up the Ivy League Championship and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, while the Lions fall to 11-4-2 and 4-2-1 in the Ivy League. A questionable foul called by the referee at the edge of the 18-yard box on the Lions gave the Crimson the last-second penalty opportunity. Freshman Melanie Baskund dribbled in on a Columbia defender and as she crossed the line of the box, the ball was deflected as she went down. But the call was made and Nichols took the chance to the left side of net and past senior goalkeeper Rebecca Taylor to give the Crimson the sudden victory. The game was an up-and-down, physical affair with a total of 31 fouls called on both sides. Harvard picked up the game’s first goal in the 27th minute. Christina Hagner ripped a shot from just inside the box off a feed from Rachel Lau to put the Crimson on top, 1-0. The game would remain at 1-0 until the 50th minute, when junior Sophie Reiser found first-year Ashlin Yahr on the right side. Yahr turned and fired a perfectly-placed shot far post to knot the match at 1-1. The goal gives Yahr 29 points on the year, tying her with Krizsen Williams for the alltime single-season record at Columbia by first-year players. The assist by Reiser also extended her streak to 13 consecutive matches with at least one point. From there, Harvard would take control over the next 10-minute stretch. The Crimson took four corners in the span but could not convert. In the 73rd minute, Reiser had a chance to put the Lions on top. A Crimson defender slipped, allowing Reiser to sail scot-free down the right side. Reiser turned back inside and fired a shot that goalkeeper Laura Mann was able to stop. The contest would go to overtime, with Harvard controlling the pace of play. The Crimson would take two shots in the period and a corner kick. The Lions would also have a corner-kick opportunity, caused by a run by Reiser down the right side. But Harvard would clear the chance as the contest went to a second overtime. In the second extra session, the Crimson hit a crossbar with four minutes left on a shot by Baskind, who finished the game with a matchbest seven shots. The game would go back-and-forth before the penalty kick with seconds remaining. Taylor was once again solid in net for the Lions, making seven stops in her final contest in a Columbia uniform. Lions Recognized For Outstanding 2008 Season NEW YORK -- After an impressive season in which she established herself as one of the top women’s soccer players in the Northeast region, junior Sophie Reiser was named the Ivy League Women’s Soccer Player of the Year by the conference. Reiser became the second Columbia player in history and second in the past three seasons to win the award (Shannon Munoz – 2006). In addition, four Lions were named to the All-Ivy League second team and one was named honorable mention. Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Taylor, junior defender Meggie Ford, junior midfielder Ashley Mistele and first-year forward Ashlin Yahr all garnered second-team accolades while sophomore defender Lauren Cooke was named honorable mention. Reiser, who was also the only unanimous selection to the All-Ivy League first team, broke out to register personal bests in goals (12), assists (11), and points (35) in 2008. The Seattle native was named Ivy League Player of the Week on two separate occasions this fall and ended the season on a 13-game point-scoring streak, one of the top streaks in the nation. She tied a school record with three assists in a 4-0 shutout of Long Island on October 6, then registered all three Columbia goals in a 3-1 win over Dartmouth on October 24. For her efforts, she was also selected to the SoccerBuzz Elite Team of the Week and to Soccer America’s Women’s National Team of the Week. Reiser was also named Columbia University Student-Athlete of the Month for both September and October. In addition, Reiser became the first women’s soccer player in Columbia history to earn All-America (fourth team - SoccerBuzz) and Scholar AllAmerica (first team - NSCAA) honors. Taylor earned her first all-league nod after registering a career-best five wins in goal. Taylor started 12 games between the pipes for the Lions and had a 1.02 goals-against average while registering a pair of completegame shutouts. In a hotly-contested game against Yale, Taylor came up huge with a pair of key saves in the final minutes to help Columbia hold on for a 2-1 win and keep the team alive for an Ivy League Championship. Also earning her first all-league recognition was Ford, who was an integral part of the backline for the Lions this season, starting 16 of 17 games at a central defender position. Her ability to come up clutch was never more apparent than against Yale on November 1, as her header save at the goal line on a wide-open shot by a Bulldog attacker kept Columbia ahead. Ford has been a linchpin in the back for the Lions over the course of her career, starting 49 of a possible 52 matches. A steadying force in the midfield, Mistele also earned her first allconference nomination. A consistent presence on the pitch all year long, the California native had a pair of goals and one assist this season and was able to constantly win 50-50 balls and gain possession for her team. Mistele has started 41 games over the course of her career, including 33 in the past two seasons. Yahr burst onto the scene as a first-year this season with her dynamic play and creative work up top. Twice named Ivy League Rookie of the Week this season, the forward established a program record with 10 goals as a first-year player. She also added seven assists to total 27 points, second-most in the Ivy League. Yahr was also named to the SoccerBuzz Elite Team of the Week earlier in the year. Pairing with Ford at center back, Cooke started all 17 games for the Lions this season and played a team-most 1,560 minutes. A first time AllIvy honoree, Cooke was a key member of a defense that allowed just 0.77 goals per game this season, which ranked second in the Ivy League. The Columbia University women’s soccer team finished the season ranked third in the Northeast region by both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and by SoccerBuzz. The Lions closed with an 114-2 record, 4-2-1 in the Ivy League, and narrowly missed out on a second NCAA Tournament appearance in the past three years. The future for the team looks extremely bright, as Taylor and classmate SaraAnn Bennett are the only two players that Columbia loses from its roster for the 2009 season.
