N E W YO R K C I T Y I S From its beginnings in a schoolhouse in lower Manhattan, Columbia University has grown to encompass two principal campuses in New York City: the historic, neoclassical campus in the Morningside Heights neighborhood and the modern Medical Center further uptown, in Washington Heights.

Today, Columbia is one of the top academic and research institutions in the world, conducting pathbreaking research in medicine, science, the arts, and the humanities. It includes three undergraduate schools, thirteen graduate and professional schools, and a school of continuing education.

A member of the Ivy League, Columbia sponsors 29 intercollegiate varsity sports for men and women which compete at the Division I level. Columbia has won 11 Ivy League titles over the past three years, the most in any three-year span in school history.

In New York, the greatest city in the world has everything at your fingertips. A baseball game at Yankee Stadium, a world-class Broadway show, or just a ride around the city where neighborhoods flow freely into one another, New York has it all.

HEAD COACH JANA WOOLLEY

Jana Woolley was promoted to head coach of the Columbia field hockey program in December 2008 after serving as the Lions’ top assistant coach for two seasons. Woolley came to Columbia after eight seasons as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina. It didn’t take long for Woolley’s presence to have a huge impact on the Columbia field hockey program. In her first season as an assistant with the Lions, Woolley coached goaltender Gena Miller ‘09CC to first-team All-Ivy League honors, and AllAmerican recognition by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) and womensfieldhockey.com. Miller became the first ever Columbia field hockey player to earn All-American honors. During her first two seasons with Columbia, Woolley helped the Lions to back-to-back 11 win seasons. In 2007, she helped guide Columbia to a second place finish in the Ivy League, while the five conference wins that season established a new program best. Woolley had a highly successful playing career as well. A two-time All-America goalkeeper, she helped UNC to NCAA titles in 1995, ‘96 and ‘97. In the 1996 championship game against Princeton, she earned a 3-0 shutout. Her goals allowed average that season was 0.61, the best in the nation. Her 46 career shutouts still stand as a UNC and Atlantic Coast Conference record, and her 14 shutouts and goals against average of 0.43 in 1994 both are tied for the school and ACC records. She was named to the ACC 50th Anniversary Team in 2002 and to the NCAA Division I 25th Anniversary Team in 2005. Then known as Jana Withrow, Woolley earned All-America and All-ACC honors in her junior and senior years and was named All-ACC in 1995, ‘96 and ‘97. She earned a spot on the All-NCAA Tournament team as a sophomore in 1995. Woolley was also honored as the Delaware Athlete of the Year in 1997 and was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1997-2000.

CAREY FETTING-SMITH Assistant Coach Third Season North Carolina ‘05

Carey Fetting-Smith was named the first assistant coach in February 2009 after previously serving as the second assistant for the last two years. She helped the Lions to back-to-back 11-win seasons in 2007 and 2008. Fetting-Smith previously worked as a Program Director for Teach For America. As a Program Director, she worked to manage and develop 31 Teach For America teachers to achieve ambitious results with their students and to inspire these teachers to become lifelong advocates for educational equity. A two-year captain of the University of North Carolina field hockey program, Fetting-Smith led the Tar Heels to the 2004 ACC Championship with the best record in the country. She played on the USA U-21 National Team from 2000-2004, participating in the Junior World Cup and Junior Pan Am Games. The Baltimore, Md. native was also a two-time National Futures Tournament and Junior Olympics selection. Most recently, Fetting-Smith was a member of the USA Field Hockey High Performance Training Team, and was selected to represent the Pennsylvania/New Jersey team at the National Championships in 2007 and 2008. Last spring Fetting-Smith was invited to compete in a training series with the USA National B Team. In 2005, upon graduating from UNC, Fetting-Smith was accepted from more than 17,000 applicants nationwide to join Teach For America. She served as an elementary special education teacher at PS 202 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Fetting-Smith graduated from North Carolina in 2005 with a B.A. in comparative literature, and earned her M.S. in teaching from Pace University in 2007.

KAYLA BASHORE

DANNY HAYDON

Kayla Bashore joined the Columbia University field hockey staff in August 2009. She has been a member of the US Women’s Field Hockey National Team since 2006. In addition to competing for the US at the Olympics in Beijing, China last summer, the midfielder has also helped the US to a first place finish in 2007 at the Chile 4 Nations Tournament and a sixth place finish at the World Cup held in Madrid, Spain in 2006.

Danny Haydon joined the Columbia field hockey staff in August 2009.

Second Assistant Coach First Season Indiana ‘06

Volunteer Coach First Season University of Southampton ‘01

“Danny has a wealth of international experience playing at the highest level for many years,” said head coach Jana Woolley. “He will challenge our girls to play tougher and to think and execute at a much quicker pace.”

“Kayla is a huge asset to our program,” said head coach Jana Woolley. “We are really excited to have an Olympian and current National Team player help train our student-athletes. Kayla is out on the pitch every day doing fitness and playing with our players which is a great experience for them. She is helping to develop their technical skill by demonstrating what it means to play smart, play fast, and play with risk.”

Haydon was a member of England’s national team for a number of years and competed in the Champions Trophy (the top six nations in the world) as well as the World Cup. He helped his team to a Youth Olympics Gold Medal and later became the youngest player ever to captain England’s U21 team. Having traveled all over for competition, Haydon also became the first European player to play in the Indian and Malaysian Premier Hockey Leagues.

After picking up the sport at the age of 15 at Hamburg High School, four years later Bashore earned a scholarship to play at Indiana University. She received National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) all-region recognition each of her four seasons, being named to the second team in 2001 and 2002, and to the first team in 2003 and 2005.

Currently a sales associate at Riskmetrics Group, Haydon graduated from the University of Southampton in 2001. He was the class valedictorian and had his thesis published in the International Journal of Strength and Conditioning. He returned to Southampton to earn his masters in business administration, graduating with distinction in 2003.

The two-time All-Big Ten honoree capped her Hoosier career by unanimously being chosen as the Big Ten Player of the Year in 2005 after leading her team to its first NCAA tournament appearance. The two-time captain for Indiana was also named a NFHCA first team All-American that same year and was a semifinalist for the top honor in her sport, the Honda Award, given to the national Player of the Year. After graduating in 2006 with a degree in Biology, Bashore returned to coach at her alma mater for a season. Over the next two years she cofounded her own company that provides opportunities for players ages four to 18 to train and compete in field hockey.
