Certified High Performance Home Program Introduced
Chairman’s Letter
In an effort to help home builders and remodelers build to a nationally-recognized and ANSI approved green standard, we are reinstating our local home certification program. The Certified High Performance Home (CHiP) program is based on the National Green Building StandardTM (ICC-700).
Congratulations on surviving another year in the housing industry! 2011 appears to be ending on a positive note with areas of Columbia experiencing increases in permits pulled and new home closings in recent months. As you take time to celebrate these successes and plan strategies for 2012, I want to encourage you to stay involved in the Sales and Marketing Council. Our strength has always been in our member participation and this year has been especially fruitful. I want to thank all of our sponsors this year that shared their time, resources, and knowledge for the betterment of our members.
All homes in this program must be 3rd-party rated and verified to the program. The certification fee is only $50/house for members with discounts available for volume builders. More information is available by contacting Bin Wilcenski at the HBA Office. Copies of the ICC-700 are available at our office.
2012 Council Leadership Elected The 2012 Executive Committee will be lead by Chairman Peter D. Williams of A-Therm Remodelers. Serving with Williams will be Mark Bostic of Square One Designs as Vice Chairman; Stan O’Brien of Paradime Construction, Inc. as Secretary/Treasurer; and, elected to two-year terms as Advisors are Thom Chumney of The Mungo Companies and Julie Jones of Tuttle Construction. We held our Annual Meeting at Seawell’s on Thursday, October 20 where we elected the officers for the 2012 Executive Committee and had a case study on windows and doors from Andersen Windows. Special thanks to Andersen Windows for sponsoring this meeting.
Thanks to Joseph Gilmore of Gilmore Consulting Services, LLC for all of his hard work over the years and especially this year as Chairman. He will be the Immediate Past Chairman of the Council in 2012. All officers and advisors will assume their positions in January 2012.

This year we explored using new technology like Blogging, Twitter, and QR codes. We kept members updated on marketing trends, new mortgage reforms, tax and liability education, and changes in new construction with the ABC’s of Building. We also had a lot of fun recognizing outstanding achievements at the REGAL awards, slimming down

Chili for Charity
The Sales & Marketing Council of Columbia (SMC) encourages and maintains a high quality of sales and marketing expertise through educational programs, networking opportunities and recognition for its members.
The SMC held their very first Chili for Charity event on October 25 to raise money to benefit the SMC Scholarship Fund and various chartable efforts supported by the foundation. 13 teams competed in the chili cook-off event where over 150 attendees tasted chili concoctions to determine the People’s Choice Winner while guest judges Jonathan Rush, Kelly Nash and Jack Sheard had the tough job of selecting the Best Dang Chili and Best Booth
winners. We are more than happy to announce that over $3,000 was raised during the inaugural event with special thanks to our sponsors: Essex Homes, SE, Homeowners Mortgage Enterprises, Inc., SCE&G Gas Sales and McDonnell & Associates, P.A. *For a complete photo gallery of the event, please visit our SMC page on Facebook
