Jennifer Harding was elected as 2019 President of the Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina (BIA), at the Annual Meeting of the Membership held October 9, 2018. She will assume the duties of President in January 2019. Although born in Macon, Georgia Mrs. Harding considers Miami, Florida her hometown. She lived in Miami for 20 years and attended North Miami Senior High and then attained a degree in Marketing from the University of Florida/Florida International University. After her newspaper career, she began her real estate career as a Realtor with Century 21 and then VP of Relocation for Russell & Jeffcoat and Coldwell Banker. She is now Vice President, Business Solutions with Leading Real Estate Companies of the World. She is active in the community serving on various clubs and organizations including the Public Policy Commission of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Junior League, and Youth Corps. She is an Area Director for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) and is President of the Columbia Executives & Owners Association. Mrs. Harding is married to Steve Harding and they have two children, Matthew and Jacob. In her free time, she enjoys travelling, shopping and wine tastings. The new Builder Directors are Mike Cancilla of Essex Homes; Matt Mungo of Mungo Homes; and Shelton Twine of Great Southern Homes. Chairpersons of BIA councils and chapters also have a seat on the Board of Directors. STAN O’BRIEN NAMED BIA BUILDER MEMBER OF THE YEAR, OTHER MEMBERS RECOGNIZED DURING ANNUAL HOLIDAY BALL

Members of the Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina (BIA) voted for their choice of nominees for the Byron Crosthwaite Builder Member of the Year Award and the Associate Member of the Year Award. The Byron Crosthwaite Builder Member of the Year is Stan O’Brien of Paradime Construction, Inc. O’Brien was born in Watertown, NY and his family moved to South Carolina when he was young. He attended Stratford High School in Goose Creek, SC and continued his education at Clemson University where he attained a BS in Architecture in 1992 and a BS in Construction Science in 1993. After college, O’Brien worked at Shugart Enterprises in Winston-Salem, NC and then relocated to Columbia, SC in 1999 when he founded his own custom home building company, Paradime Construction, Inc. O’Brien and his wife, Kristen, have two sons, Trey and Evan. O’Brien joined the association in 1999 and became more active in the association in 2007 when the High Performance Building Council was formed by members. He joined the Executive Committee and was elected Chairman of the Council in 2014. He was involved in developing the council’s Certified High Performance (CHiP) Home Program and has built certified homes, including the first one in the program that now boasts nearly 5000 certified homes. O’Brien has also been an active member in the BIA’s Building Code Review Committee for many years. He has spent countless hours at many meetings to help keep building 6 www.BIAofCentralSC.com

In 2016, O’Brien helped develop the BIA Remodelers Council’s Certified Universal Living Program and built the first three certified homes in the program. He is currently a Builder Director on the BIA Board of Directors. The 2018 BIA Associate Member of the Year is Brandon Jeffcoat of Clark’s Termite & Pest Control. He served on the BIA Board of the Board of Directors as the 2018 Associates Vice President and on the SMC Board of Directors as Chair of the Program Committee. In addition, he serves on the committees for the BIA Golf Classic and the Michael P. Nieri Bass Classic and he is Chief Oyster Cooker for the annual BIG THURSDAY Rivalry Party. A previous recipient of the SMC Member of the Year, he volunteers to deliver school supplies for St. Lawrence Place. The Commercial Contractor of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding Commercial Contractor member company of the BIA of Central South Carolina, and the award goes to 84 Lumber. Founded in 1956 and headquartered in Eighty Four, Pennsylvania, 84 Lumber is a privately held supplier of building materials, manufactured components, and industry-leading services for single- and multi-family residences and commercial buildings. 84 Lumber has been recognized on Forbes’ annual list of America’s Largest Private Companies and was also recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best Midsize Employers in 2016 and 2017. The company participated in the 2018 Carolina Classic Home & Garden Show by bringing in a tiny home for display. They are also the presenting sponsor at the annual BIA Golf Classic that benefits the Building Industry Charitable Foundation. The BIA Corporate Member of the Year is Southeastern Insurance Consultants, LLC (SIC). They are an independent insurance sales/consulting agency specializing in both individual and group health, life, and retirement licensed products for customers with a

AssociationNews focus on insurance needs for the construction industry. SIC was founded in 2000 by Eric Wells and George Routon. Ed Byrd merged his firm (Professional Group Benefits, LLC/dba Norris-Byrd Group Benefits) with SIC in 2007. Byrd joined the HBA of Greater Columbia (now BIA of Central South Carolina) in 1987, and currently serves on the Remodelers Council Executive Committee. He has been nominated by the National Association of Home Builders as the 2018 Associate of the Year. SIC employees are active in many clubs and committees in the BIA and can be found at many events serving up BBQ and fixin’s that they prepare. C. David Tuttle of Lake Carolina Development, Inc. was named the Richard N. Sendler award winner. This award is voted on by past presidents and associate vice presidents of the Building Industry Association and the recipient must project a community image that adds stature to the association; exemplify standards promoted and supported by the association; institute innovative and creative ideas that have improved the housing industry and have unquestionable character and integrity. Saluda Hill, Inc. was named Trade Contractor of the Year by vote of the Builder Members of the association. Saluda Hill, Inc. has been a member of the BIA since 2005 and have been active members since that time, participating in various association events including the Parade of Homes and the Carolina Classic Home & Garden Show. The Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina would like to commend the award winners on their hard work and dedication throughout the year. They have not only served the building industry well, but the Columbia community and the entire state have benefited from their dedication and work.

The annual BIA Clay Shoot presented by Comporium was held on Friday, September 21 at Hermitage Farms in Camden, SC. The event sends multiple 4-person teams through a series of clay shooting stations in an effort to hit as many of the disks as possible. The team with the most hit clays wins.

BIA SEPTEMBER MEETING
The Building Industry Association on September 13 held a general membership meeting at The Hall at Senate’s End in Columbia. Over 200 members attended the lunch meeting sponsored by Columbia Metropolitan Magazine and Allied Air Enterprises. This meeting featured the presentation of the Central SC Building & Remodeling Awards. The awards are comprised of the long-running Columbia Remodelers Awards (CRAs) and the new Custom Building Awards (CBAs). See all of the entries and winners at our website. We thank all of the members who entered and congratulate the winners. See page 3. Our special guest speaker was Marcus Lattimore, Director of Player Development and former University of S. Carolina running back. He spoke to the crowd about his life experiences and time with the football team. He delivered a message of believing in one’s self, setting long term goals and the importance of surrounding yourself with good people to help you achieve those goals. We welcomed new members into the BIA (see page 20) and presented SPIKE Club Awards to those who have reached new levels in the club. Thanks to Matt Arnold, Patrick Bukszar, Robert LaFitte, Jennifer Harding, Mike Satterfield and Gary Pickren for their continued efforts in recruiting new members in the organization.

On October 9, the membership met for the BIA Annual Meeting & SPIKE Night at the Hunter Gatherer Brewery located in the Curtiss-Wright Hangar in Columbia. The new brewery offered plenty of indoor and outdoor space for networking between members as they enjoyed locally-brewed beers and locally-sourced foods. Although the program for the meeting was short, we did hold elections for the 2019 BIA Board of Directors, the 2019 Remodelers Council Executive Committee and the 2019 High Performance Building Council Executive Committee. The Annual Meeting is also SPIKE Night. Members who bring at least six new members into the association join the SPIKE Club. All SPIKEs at the meeting were given a limited-edition BIA beer stein as a thank you for their efforts. We welcomed Mike Cancilla of Essex Homes into the club and awarded Mike Satterfield of Great Southern Homes as 2018 SPIKE of the Year. Congratulations to these two gentlemen and thanks to all members who help to grow the association. This meeting was also the first round of the BIA Corn Hole Tournament sponsored by Brabham Griffin Insurance and Central Insurance Companies. Sixteen teams played down to the final four during the meeting. The final four would progress to the finals to be held in November during the BIG THURSDAY Rivalry Party.

REMODELERS COUNCIL The Remodelers Council is a group made up of members who specialize in remodeling and associated trades. Formed in 1986, the council has many long-time members and new members alike. They meet quarterly for educational meetings and in other months for social meetings and After Hours events at members’ places of business. In 2016, the council developed the Universal Living Certification that helps new home builders build and certify homes that are designed for inhabitants of all ages and abilities. Tim assumed the role on January 1, 2019 and will serve as Chairman until December 31, 2019. SALES AND MARKETING COUNCIL Chili for Charity
The 8th annual Chili for Charity Cook-off was held Thursday, October 4th in the Blair Cato Pickren Casterline, LLC parking lot off Huger Street in downtown Columbia. Twenty-seven SMC Member companies entered the competition and cooked a wide array of chili’s on a hot October day. A blind tasting was held by impartial judges and they crowned The Best Dang Chili, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Celebrity judges visited all of the chili stations and awarded Best Booth. Attendees voted for their favorite chili and decided the People’s Choice Best Chili.

Christmas with St. Lawrence Place
The SMC once again adopted families from St. Lawrence Place in December and provided needed items including home goods, kitchen wares, blankets and toys. Through the generosity of our SMC Membership, we were able to donate over $1,500 worth of items to the families.

HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING COUNCIL The High Performance Building Council (HPBC) was formed in 2007 by members of the Building Industry Association of Central SC (BIA) who were interested in learning more about sustainable residential construction and who had green products and services available in the marketplace. Today, the council enjoys a membership comprised of various members of the BIA in home building, remodeling and many different trade partners specializing in all sorts of green products and services. Members meet once a month for a Membership Meeting, On-site Experience or other educational and networking meeting. The HPBC is also the certifying agent of the Certified High Performance (CHiP) Home program. The membership of the High Performance Building Council (HPBC) elected Wes McManus of Harbinger Homes as 2019 Chairman. Wes assumed his new role on January 1, 2019 and will serve through December 31, 2019. We also welcome Jesse Burke of Burke Engineering, LLC to the Executive Committee in an Advisory Position. Special thanks to Charlie Barber of Essex Homes. Charlie served as Chairman of the HPBC in 2018. Charlie brought a great deal of knowledge and connections to the council. He will remain on the committee as Immediate Past Chair in 2019. Thanks also to Jenny Nettles for her service to the council over the years. She will be leaving the committee at the end of 2018.

BIG THURSDAY RIVALRY PARTY

On Thursday, November 16 over 300 members and guests attended the annual BIA BIG THURSDAY Rivalry Party at Carolina Haven in Columbia. The event featured steamed oysters, chicken bog, open bars and live entertainment by Jeff Lucero. The event is a great networking opportunity for members and is a great party celebrating one of the longest running football rivalries in America – Clemson vs. Univ. of S. Carolina. The oyster cooking team from Clark’s Pest Control turned out nearly 30 bushels of steamed-to-perfection oysters, the chicken bog was delicious and the VIP area was out of control with great food, champagne, and craft beer selections. For the second time BIG THURSDAY was host to the finals of the BIA Corn Hole Tournament. Sixteen teams of two started play at the Annual Meeting in October and the final four teams met at BIG THURSDAY and played for all the glory. Congratulations to Charlie Barber of Essex Homes and his wife, Lani, who came out victorious in the competition. We’ll be looking for 16 more teams to compete next year.
