LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

AssociationNews

Fellow Members, We are up and running for 2017 and it’s already looking to be a great year. We have plenty of meetings and events planned and I hope you make time to participate. Being involved is the best way to get value out of your membership. By attending meetings, you get to know your fellow members, tell others about what you do, and make this association a stronger community. Putting on all of these meetings and events takes time and money to accomplish. Our staff works hard to plan, coordinate and man all of the functions, and members help fund it all with attendance, membership dues and sponsorships. Many events we do year after year would not be possible without our generous sponsors, and we are grateful for their help. We are so grateful that we formed the BIA Elite sponsorship program designed to further recognize those members who sponsor multiple meetings and events throughout the year. In addition to the recognition they receive at that sponsored event, BIA Elite members will be recognized in many other ways …like the image accompanying this letter. You’ll see BIA Elite members featured on our website and e-newsletters, on a banner at meetings and in our office, and you’ll see them at meetings wearing their BIA Elite pins. As I mentioned, there are lots of meetings and events planned for this year and there are many sponsorship opportunities to go with them. Thanks to those members who have already committed to sponsoring events this year! If you’d like to join the BIA Elite, please contact a member of the staff to get started. Thank you for your membership, and I look forward to seeing you at BIA functions throughout the year!

2017 HOME & GARDEN SHOW The 51st annual Carolina Classic Home & Garden Show was held March 10 – 12, 2017 at the SC State Fairgrounds. The show featured over 230 exhibitors and vendors and drew about 8,000 attendees. In addition to the many exhibits, the show featured a Senior Day & Expo, the HGYP Scavenger Hunt & Social, Military Appreciation Day, the Bierkeller Beer Garden, the Balloon House, a food court, seminars, kids activities and over $30,000 in prizes from exhibitors. Needless to say, it was quite a show. And, of course, we have to mention the weather. Exhibitors were treated to Spring and Summer-like temperatures during move-in, but it didn’t last through the weekend. In fact, it snowed in Columbia on the final day of the show! Although fleeting, it was enough to knock the Sunday attendance numbers down to about a third of what was expected. Despite the weather, the show looked great and reports from exhibitors and attendees are positive. We’d like to thank the many members, exhibitors and volunteers who helped to make the show happen and we are looking forward to next year.

2017 BUILDERS DAY AT THE CAPITOL

Rep. Nathan Ballentine meets with fellow BIA Members at the Capitol.

BIA Members took a trip to the state capitol building to visit with elected officials on March 14. We were able to speak with many of our elected officials and explain our position on important items facing the building industry this year. We were also able to extend a personal invitation to the HBA of SC Bird Supper planned for later in the month. Thanks to all of the members who made time to attend this event. Your participation is invaluable when talking with elected officials about issues of importance. Thanks also to Essex Homes for sponsoring lunch at the Palmetto Club during this event.

REMODELERS COUNCIL The members of the Remodelers Council have met a few times this year, and they’re having a great time doing so! We kicked off the year with a Remodelers After Hours at The Tile Shop on Harbison Blvd. in January. Members and guests enjoyed networking while learning about the products and services offered at The Tile Shop. In February, the Remodelers Council participated in the Table Top displays during the BIA General Membership Meeting. Council members talked with BIA Members who were not aware of the council and even brought in a few new members! Later in the month, Remodelers Council members met for a General Membership Meeting at Agape Conference Center in downtown Columbia. Chairwoman Jennifer Cannon inducted the 2017 Executive Committee and we learned about keeping your company data safe in both digital and hard-copy form. Thanks to The Building Center for sponsoring this meeting. In March, we announced our BBQ Fundraiser taking place this year. BIA and Remodelers Council member Ed Byrd of Southeastern Insurance Consultants happens to be an accomplished pit-master and turns out some delicious barbeque. The council is taking orders for quarts and full pork butts, and will have the orders filled on May 25, just in time for Memorial Day Weekend. Visit BIAofCentralSC.com and download the order form so you can “Bring Your Butt to the Party!” We were also very happy to have another Remodelers After Hours in March of this year. This time, members and guests visited the brand new Gateway Supply Co. located in Lexington near the Lake Murray Dam. Although not quite complete at the time of our visit, members had a great time networking and seeing the new showroom.

HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING COUNCIL The High Performance Building Council is off to a quick start this year. We had a meeting in January where we inducted our 2017 Executive Committee and learned about new trends in lighting from Kichler Lighting. (Spoiler Alert: It’s all about LEDs.)

High Performance Building Council

In February we visited a home under construction by council member Paradime Construction. This home is unique in that it is being built to the CHiP Home Program as well as the new Certified Universal Living program. Our hosts did a fantastic job of labeling the entire home with cards explaining how guidelines from each program were being met. We’ll visit the home again on June 22 to see the finished product – please plan on joining us! In March we met again at Agape Conference Center for a general membership meeting. Our topic this time was the forthcoming Water Efficiency Rating System (WERS). This new rating is being developed by the EPA and RESNET (the group behind HERS). Special thanks to council member Trevor Michael of Home Energy Group for bringing this to our attention and mak-

ing a presentation on the subject. Thanks to Epic Homes, LLC for sponsoring this meeting! We’ve got plenty more meeting planned for 2017 and we hope you can join us. If you’re interested in learning more about high-performance building or our CHiP Home Program, we’d love to have you in the council. Contact Bin Wilcenski at the BIA for membership information – only $95/year for BIA members!

AssociationNews Also in January, we celebrated a milestone in our Certified High Performance (CHiP) Home Program – the certification of our 3000th home! The home itself was built by Great Southern Homes and is located in Chapin, SC. We marked the occasion with a celebration at Stone River in West Columbia. All of our CHiP Builders were recognized for their participation. Thanks to our CHiP 3000 Celebration sponsors:

Mike Satterfield of Great Southern Homes and John Covert of Covert Homes receive Ft. Jackson Centennial Celebration coins in recognition of their plans to each build a pavilion in the new Centennial Park at the fort. Hood Construction and Mungo Homes will also build pavilions in the park.

In January of this year we met at Seawell’s for a General Membership Meeting. We were fortunate to have representatives from Ft. Jackson to talk with us about the 100 year history of the Fort and the efforts this year to beautify and enhance the grounds of the Fort. Thanks to Allied Air and Home Pest Control for sponsoring this meeting. January Meeting Sponsors:

In February we met for another General Membership Meeting, but this one was different from previous meetings. First, we met at 701 Whaley in downtown Columbia. Second, instead of a sit-down meal, we invited three area food trucks to serve dinner. And third, there was no speaker for the meeting, but instead a series of displays from BIA Councils and Committees and some of our Elite Sponsors. The meeting had a lively, party-like atmosphere and enjoyed a higher than usual attendance. February Meeting Sponsors:

And in April, the BIA Membership was invited to Spirit Communications Park for a General Membership Meeting and luncheon. Members were treated to a traditional ballpark lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs, and a short program from the first baseline dugout. April Meeting Sponsors:
