BIA BASS CLASSIC
T
he BIA Bass Classic was held Friday, April 24 on Lake Murray. Over 40 two-person teams hit the lake at first-light in search of the five best bass they could catch. Everyone returned safely to the Lighthouse Marina for the weigh-in to see who brought in the best batch. First place went to Eric McDowell and Jason Palfrey from Gateway Supply Co. They brought in 20.4 pounds of bass. Their largest was a prize-winning 5.74 pounder! We actually had a tie for 2nd and 3rd place. Clark’s Pest Control and Mungo Homes (Edwards) each brought in 19.38 lbs. of bass. Anglers and BIA members enjoyed cold beverages, lunch and fish stories after the tournament. We also concluded the Poker Rally that was held during the tournament. Smiles all around for bringing in the best hand and winning the prize

BIA MAY MEETING
A
General Membership Meeting of the BIA of Central SC was held Thursday, May 13 at the Ndoki Lodge of Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens in Columbia, SC. Attendees were treated to cocktails al fresco with the company of elephants and meercats. Two other animals were brought out by zoo staff for members to meet. This meeting was also the kickoff of the May Membership Blitz. Members were encouraged to sponsor new members in the association, and as a reward the new member and sponsor would receive tickets to the June 23rd Lexington County Blowfish Baseball game. In recognition of this Membership Blitz, the ball club sent their mascot, Blowy, to our meeting to mingle with members. Attendees then moved into the Ndoki Lodge for dinner and the program. We were treated to a presentation by Zoo Director, Satch Krantz. He gave us an overview of the business-side of the zoo and a breakdown of the many improvements the zoo is currently undergoing. It was in informative look at the jewel of Columbia tourism and one of the best zoos in the country. We also heard from Representative Rick Quinn on the subject of Business License Reform in South Carolina, welcomed new members and recognized those members who reached new levels in the SPIKE Club.

HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING COUNCIL May Membership Meeting High Performance Building Council members met on Thursday, May 21 at Seawell’s. The meeting was sponsored by DOW Building Solutions and attendees got to hear from BIA member and DOW Building Solutions representative, Michael Peaden. Here’s what we learned… As energy efficiency codes become more stringent, houses are becoming tighter. To meet the more stringent building codes, penetrations in the envelope are now being sealed with can foam products. The responsibility of air sealing penetrations falls on just about everyone that is involved in the construction of residential and commercial buildings. Insulation companies, plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, builders, and low voltage companies are just a few of the trades that share in the responsibility of making the buildings we build tighter and therefore, more energy efficient. Most companies are still using can foam products that utilize straws. We have all seen these. We have probably all used these. They are effective, but they can be messy and you end up wasting a lot of foam once you open the can if you don’t use all of it right then. The GREAT STUFF PRO™ Gun solves this. You are able to use most of the product in the can and your messes are minimized as once you release the trigger, foam stops flowing. To get the best performance out of your GREAT STUFF PRO™ can products, always keep a can of GREAT STUFF PRO™ on your GREAT STUFF™ Gun, minimize cleaning of the inside of the gun (only when storing for more than a few weeks at a time), close the valve on the rear of the gun after use, and the gun should last a very long time. If you are a professional in the industry, you should consider switching over to GREAT STUFF PRO™ Gun foam. Widely available across the country, you can now source GREAT STUFF PRO™ Gun Foam at Stier Building Supply in Irmo, SC. Stier has in stock our GREAT STUFF PRO™ Gaps and Cracks which is used for sealing penetrations (wires, pipes, ducts, etc.), our GREAT STUFF PRO™ Window and Door (more flexible foam to be used around windows), and our GREAT STUFF™ Wall and Floor (one can=6 quart tubes of subfloor adhesive).
July Meeting Recap On July 11, council members were invited to an informal meeting at Council Chairman Todd Wagstaff’s business, Comfort Services. Attendees were treated to an impromptu tour and education session where Todd showed us some innovative solutions to duct leakage problems. A big thanks to Todd and his team at Comfort Services for having us in June!
CHiP Home Program Update The High Performance Building Council would like to welcome Great Southern Homes into the Certified High Performance (CHiP) Home Program! The company has been working on joining the program this year and we started receiving submissions in April. As of this newsletter, we have certified 127 Great Southern Homes! This program is open to all BIA of Central SC members and certification starts at just $25/home with volume discounts.
