HOME & GARDEN SHOW
T
he 49th Annual Carolina Classic Home & Garden Show was held March 13 – 15, 2015 at the SC State Fairgrounds. The show featured 250 exhibitors in all areas of home building, remodeling, landscaping, gardening, furnishing and more. In addition to the exhibitors, the show featured prize giveaways, seminars, and a Builder Preview. This year, we had a Lucille Ball impersonator in conjunction with the Senior Day & Expo on Friday, March 13, a video game truck on Saturday, March 14 and the #48 Lowe’s Chevrolet all weekend long. We also had the 3rd annual Wine & Beer Walk where attendees sampled wines and select beers while visiting exhibitors. Special thanks to Home Show Committee Chairman Edwin Gerace for his tireless work on the show these past two years! Thanks, also, to all of the committee members, the many sponsors, exhibitors and volunteers. The show was a success with nearly 10,000 visitors throughout the weekend. Next year brings the 50th annual Home & Gar-
den Show… look for some big changes including a brand new building at the Fairgrounds! Contact us if you’re interested in being on the Home Show Committee and planning this spectacular show. GROUNDBREAKING FOR COTTAGE AT BOYS FARM
A
Ground Breaking for “Toby’s Cottage” at Boys Farm in Newberry was held Tuesday, February 17, 2015. Thanks to the strong support of companies, churches, and individuals throughout South Carolina, the Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina in partnership with Great Southern Homes will build the 5,068 square foot cottage designed by Ned Purcell of Great Southern Homes at no cost to Boys Farm. Boys Farm is a nonprofit organization that provides unique foster care services for boys experiencing difficult family situations located at 6655 SC Highway34/121 in Newberry, SC President and founder of Great Southern Homes, Michael Nieri, volunteered to build the home on behalf of the Building Industry Association with support from the BIA’s Charitable Foundation. “We are honored to help accommodate the growing need for children to have a safe home and give them hope for generations to come” said Nieri. BIA President David Tuttle and Charitable Foundation President Rex Thompson stated that “our organization represents many caring businesses in central South Carolina
that will help build a better community by offering donations of materials, money and labor toward the construction of this special home for boys and their house parents allowing them to live in a structured family environment”. The estimate construction cost of “Toby’s Cottage“ is $299,000 and is expected to serve as a prototype for future cottages in the 50 year expansion plan for Boys Farm. The new cottage will allow Boys Farm to increase the number of children served by 25%. The cottage is named in memory of William Tobin “Toby” Cassels. Toby, known for his energetic leadership, as a motivator, and for his persistence, was studying business at USC when he passed away last year at the age of 21. Donations in support of “Toby’s Cottage” are being accepted by the HBA Charitable Foundation, a South Carolina nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization affiliated with the Building Industry Association, 625 Taylor Street, Columbia, SC or to Boys Farm, Inc., a South Carolina nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization, PO Box 713, Newberry, SC 29108.

HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING COUNCIL High Performance Building Council
January Meeting The council met for a membership meeting in January at Seawell’s. We installed the 2015 Executive Committee, enjoyed cocktails and networking and heard from our speaker. Carrier Enterprise, LLC spoke to the group about their products including smart thermostats and Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs). We gained a lot of insight and information into the workings of HVAC systems and a glimpse of new technology that is soon to be more prevalent in the marketplace. Special thanks to Carrier for speaking at and sponsoring our January meeting!
LCB Construction On-Site Experience Members of the council met for an On-Site Experience at a home in Lexington built by LCB Construction. This was the same home we visited in November 2014 as it was under construction. The home is now complete and we wanted to have a follow-up visit to learn more about its construction. Thanks to LCB Construction for sponsoring this event and hosting us!

REMODELERS COUNCIL Fix It & Finish It TV Shoot Members of the Remodelers Council had a unique opportunity to work with a syndicated television show called “Fix It & Finish It” as they came through Columbia this January. Producers worked with our staff to find members willing and able to help with a series of one-day projects in the greater Columbia area. The shoots were fast-paced and a lot of fun, and should air on WIS TV very soon. We’ll have updates on our Facebook and Twitter feeds when we get details.
Remodelers
Remodelers After Hours Remodelers council members and guests were treated to an After Hours event in January. Hosts were Palmetto Payroll Solutions. Blair, Cato, Pickren, Casterline, and Southeastern Insurance Consultants (SIC). We met at the new Blair Cato offices located at 700 Huger St. in downtown Columbia. We learned about each of our hosts’ companies and how their services can be utilized to help members’ businesses. We were treated to a BBQ dinner prepared by Ed Byrd and company from SIC.
Quarterly Meeting In February, the council met once again, but for a Quarterly Meeting. Council member Andrew Cole of Collins & Lacy, PC was our speaker. He put together a series of scenarios that remodelers and other small business owners could encounter. The interactive role-playing exercises demonstrated the importance of good contracts and understanding between companies and individuals entering into a business relationship. We also installed the 2015 Executive Committee and welcomed new members and guests.
Upcoming meetings Please see the Remodelers council page at www.columbiabuilders.com for the most up-to-date calendar of events. We hope to see you at some of these meetings:
