Home Improvement Show
T Professionals with higher standards dedicated to making your home the best it can be.
he 19th annual Home Improvement Show was held August 16 – 18 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Over 90 exhibitors filled the exhibit hall and enjoyed an exuberant crowd of over 1,000 people. We started off with a crowd of members stopping by after the August HBA Meeting held just down the hall on the first day of the show, and enjoyed our first ever Beer Night at the Home Improvement Show that evening. Thanks to Comfort Services, Creative Tile, Distinctive Surfaces and Gutter Pro for sponsoring this event. On Saturday of the show, we had special guest Dr. Lori and her Antique Appraisal Comedy Show.
Attendees brought many interesting items from home for Dr. Lori to examine. She gave great insight to the origins of each item, and also her best estimation of what price could be garnered for each if sold today. Thanks to the many exhibitors and attendees who made this show entertaining and good looking! Thanks also to our sponsors: The State Media Company, SCE&G, and McGuinn Homes. Also thanks to Clyde Nettles Roofing for sponsoring the lanyards for exhibitors. Finally, a great big thanks to Judy Phipps for chairing the show again this year and volunteering the entire weekend at the prize registration table. We couldn’t do it without you!
August Meeting The Columbia Remodelers council is now on Facebook. If you’re on the social networking website, please visit us at www.facebook. com/ColumbiaRemodelers and “Like” our page. A
ugust also brought a general meeting for the Columbia Remodelers council. Members met at Seawell’s on Monday, August 27th. The topic of the meeting was the Historical Districts of Columbia. Guest speaker Amy Moore from the City of Columbia told us about the many different districts and how to work with the city on construction and renovations in those areas.
September After Hours
S
eptember brought an After Hours meeting as members were invited to Columbia Wholesale. The attendance was light, but we had a great time learning about the many new roofing products and supplies Columbia Wholesale
has to offer, and we enjoyed a fantastic dinner of chicken bog and coleslaw. Thanks to everyone at Columbia Wholesale for a great evening.

T
he beauty of having a Clay Shoot in Camden is that we can hold the Kershaw County Steak Out at the same location afterwards. The Steak Out is an opportunity for our members in Kershaw County to have a meal with elected officials in a relaxing atmosphere. We were happy to have Congressman Mick Mulvaney, Senators Thomas McElveen and Vincent Sheheen, Sheriff Matthews and Councilmen Sammy Tucker and Jimmy Jones, and Camden Mayor Tony Scully with us this evening, and all of the members. Our efforts included: building codes, tax credits for abandoned buildings, insurance reform, extension of permits, stormwater regulations and much more. Our efforts have saved the home building industry more than $515 million in 2013 alone. For every $1 invested in HBA dues, members received a $37 return! Your HBA influences government on all levels. Our goal is to protect affordable housing and to stop needless regulatory costs, which ultimately trickles down and effects everyone who works in the home. If you know of someone who makes their living in the construction industry, but is not a member ask them why. Member News Remembering Richard N. Sendler Richard Neel Sendler, 69, died Thursday, October 3, 2013. Born in Charlotte, NC he was a son of the late Moses Aaron and Mary Pegram Sendler. Richard graduated from Wampee-Little River High School, and Georgia Tech University with a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering. He proudly served his country in Vietnam as an officer in the US Army. He was owner of Sendler Construction Co., Inc., where he enjoyed a long career working with his family and those he considered family. In 1983 he started Sendler Construction and joined the Home Builders Association in 1984, He served on many committees and was named Builder Member of the Year in 1991 and served as HBA President in 1992.
caused the S.C. Building Codes Council to reconsider their actions, and as a result, procedures were adopted by the S.C. Legislature ensuring that the adoption of future building codes include a review process allowing for building industry input. In recognition of his immense knowledge and understanding of the Building Codes, Governor Mark Sanford appointed Richard to the S.C. Building Codes Council in 2004, where he served with integrity, pride and professionalism. Related to his efforts on the Building Codes was his service on the Hazard Mitigation Advisory Committee to the Director of the S.C. Department of Insurance that was created as a result of legislation mandating statewide building codes. As the representative of the Home Builders Association of South Carolina, Richard reviewed methods and made recommendations to the Director concerning hazard mitigation with the main emphasis being on seismic and high wind hazards in the coastal areas of S.C., as well as flooding hazards. Richard never sought the headlines but did what he did for his pride and love of our industry.
Perhaps the highlight of his year was introducing the President of the United States, George H. Bush at a meeting of the Home Builders Association.
He set the standard for others to follow for contributions to the housing industry and as a result was inducted in the South Carolina Housing Hall of Fame in 2007.
As president of our Association He represented our industry with Integrity, Pride and Professionalism and in 1996 received the prestigious Gordon A. Harrison award.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 47 years, Carolyn Adams Sendler; sons; Richard N. Sendler, Jr. and Michael Scott Sendler and wife Lisa, all of Columbia; grandchildren, Christian Hope Sendler, Bailey Ann Sendler, Mya Neomi Illingworth, Ava Zoelle Sendler, and Jacob Cade Sendler; brothers, Edward P. Sendler and wife Jayne of Venice, FL, Charles C. Sendler and wife Lynn of North Myrtle Beach, SC; sisters Mary Ann Newell and husband Bill of Pittsboro, NC, Jean S. Ayers and husband Bill of LeGrange, GA, and a sister-in-law, Joyce Sendler of Atlantic Beach, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
But Richard was not finished – He continued to serve our industry. He was a go to guy on legislative issues, always willing to share our positions with elected officials. A trip to Washington with Richard was an adventure because he told it like it was.
He set the standard for others to follow for contributions to the South Carolina housing industry. Perhaps his most significant and lasting contributions to the housing industry were his many and tireless efforts to reform and improve the building codes in South Carolina. When South Carolina was the first state in the nation to adopt the International Code Series in 2000 without public notice or input from the building industry, Richard was insistent that the process be changed to allow such input. This

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Alter W. Sendler. Richard wanted to send a special and heartfelt thanks to his physicians and caretakers at SCOA: Dr. Leland J. McElveen; Dr. Steve Minter; Kim Dewitt, PA; and Nurse Nancy. Memorials may be made to either the Charitable Foundation of The Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia, 625 Taylor Street, Columbia, SC 29201 or The Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation, 100 Park Avenue, Suite #108, Rockville, MD 20850. Member News SC Housing Hall of Fame to Induct Two New Members The South Carolina Housing Hall of Fame trustees have announced that Frank B. Norris and Andrew D. White will be inducted into the prestigious honor society for their work in and support of South Carolina’s home building industry. Each inductee will be presented with the trademark medallion and plaque during a ceremony on November 9th at the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort.
“Without the concern and actions of these two personalities, our industry would not have been able to weather the recent economic storm and would not have been able to maintain the level of strength which it has today,” said Ormand. “I congratulate the accomplishments of Messrs. Norris and White and I welcome them into the S.C. Housing Hall of Fame.”
“We couldn’t have asked for better nominees than Frank Norris or Andy White because of their unwavering efforts to protect the home building industry and the American dream of homeownership,” said Kenneth E. Ormand, Jr., chairman of the S.C. Housing Hall of Fame Trustees. “The South Carolina home building industry has been fortunate to have these champions working for the benefit of our citizens.”
Messrs. Norris and White will accept their nominations into the S.C. Housing Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 9 at the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort. Tickets for this event are on sale now at the Home Builders Association of South Carolina. For more information, call 803-771-7408 or visit www.hbaofsc.com.
Frank Norris is a strong advocate of housing who has had a remarkable effect on the housing industry. For over four decades, Frank has witnessed the rise and fall of the economy and the hardening and softening of the insurance market and how it relates to the health and prosperity of the construction industry. Out of this desire to educate those in the industry he developed the Builder Survival Manual and the Workers Compensation Certificate of Insurance Verification Program. Both of these programs have gained national recognition. These programs have been valuable tools for builders to help protect their companies. Frank Norris has also shown time and time again through his philanthropy, his service and his friendship that the well- being of the construction industry and community are imperative to him.
2014 Marketing Guide We are preparing for 2014 and hope you are as well. If you would like to attract the attention of those in the home building industry, we offer the 2014 HBA Marketing Guide. This publication has information on all of our annual and recurring events throughout the year, plus information on how you can get involved as an attendee or sponsor. Hard copies are available and you may view the digital version in the Resources for Current Members section of www.columbiabuilders.com.
Frank is a past state president of CPCU (the property and casualty insurance industries professional organization). Frank has also been a strong advocate for mental health issues. He has also done, for many years, pro bono work for the South Carolina Commission for the Blind. Andy White has been aptly recognized, both statewide and nationally, as the award-winning developer of the Saluda River Club. His peers acknowledge him as a guardian of the South Carolina residential construction industry. During one of the deepest economic downturns in our state’s history Andy White, Legislative Chair to the HBASC, engaged in legislative issues that would negatively affect the industry and our states’ financial recovery. Andy’s conviction and leadership on legislative issues including impact fees, residential sprinklers, multi-lot discounts and property tax reform set a tone for the legislative successes that everyone who makes a career in the industry enjoys today. In addition to his industry involvement, Andy White has served his community in several volunteer positions, but more notable are the efforts he and his wife, Debbie, have provided as foster parents for nearly 40 neglected children in Lexington County.
