Creating Tomorrow Today
Young Onions Need A Hero! Danger is lurking in your fields... Protect your start-ups from onion maggots and onion seed corn maggots. Get a hero.
Sepresto, Regard® SC or FarMore FI-500 (containing Spinosad), offer direct-seeded onion growers early season disease and insect protection for a healthy crop start. We apply these in a protective coating to the seeds themselves, through a safe, controlled and accurate delivery. The protectant works at the most critical time of plant development, in the place where it’s needed most—right on the germinating seed and emerging seedling - so your seeds can thrive and grow with a reduced threat of early damage. Young onions need a hero - count on Seed Dynamics, the seed protection pros. Call today for more information toll free 866-321-9747, visit our website seeddynamics.com or contact one of the seed heroes listed below.

Stop the Rot Combating Onion Bacterial Diseases Story and photos by Denise Keller, Editor
W
ith bacterial pathogens causing millions of dollars in losses annually to the U.S. onion industry, the industry is investing in research to identify enhanced management strategies. Washington State University (WSU) researchers detailed two new projects related to onion bacterial diseases during the 2019 WSU Onion Field Day, held Aug. 29 at L&L Ag Production near Connell, Washington.
Bacterial Diseases
To put the problem in perspective, Lindsey du Toit, a WSU vegetable seed pathologist, pointed out that bacterial pathogens cause more than $60 million in losses annually to the U.S. onion industry. Losses can be severe for stored bulbs as bacterial bulb rots typically develop in storage, after all production costs have been incurred. Poor understanding of the diversity and epidemiology of bacterial pathogens and the lack of systemic bactericides limit capacity to lessen the losses, according to du Toit.
Field day attendees view the results of the WSU onion cultivar trial at L&L Ag Production near Connell, Wash.
Aruba , one of 47 entries from seven seed companies in this year’s onion cultivar trial, is on display for viewing.
du Toit is now leading a group of 24 scientists from 12 states in a four-year research project meant to mitigate the impact of bacterial diseases on onion production in the U.S. A $4 million grant from the USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Specialty Crops Research Initiative program is funding the project, which is titled “Stop the rot: Combating onion bacterial diseases with pathogenomic tools and enhanced management strategies.” The grant has been matched by $4.2 million from onion stakeholders and universities involved in the project. Among the first tasks is to survey which bacteria are present in different onion production regions. The researchers in all 12 states will conduct this survey for three seasons to get a better picture of the diversity of bacteria causing losses across the country. They will then use that information to study the genetics of the bacterial pathogens in order to design rapid methods for detecting and identifying pathogens in growers’ fields. Current methods involving isolations from symptomatic bulbs often result in recovery of as many as seven bacteria, and tracking which of these are primary pathogens and which are secondary is time consuming, du Toit said. Instead, researchers would like to develop molecular tools based on the genetic factors driving the ability to infect onions. Other goals of the project are to develop methods of screening for resistance to bacterial diseases that can be used by onion breeders, and to improve management strategies for bacterial diseases, including irrigation and fertility practices. “I know from 19 years of working with onions in the Columbia Basin that irrigation and fertility are big drivers behind bacterial diseases, and I think we
can do a much better job of learning how to manage irrigation and fertility better to control bacterial diseases,” du Toit said. The project began in October and will continue through September 2023. Growers interested in being involved in the bacterial disease survey or disease management trials can contact du Toit at dutoit@wsu.edu.
Bactericide Trial
Carrie Wohleb, a WSU regional vegetable specialist, displays two onions from the onion cultivar trial to show the difference in severity of powdery mildew symptoms among different cultivars.
WSU’s Lindsey du Toit outlines new research projects to study onion bacterial diseases.
du Toit also reported on a trial with Tim Waters, a WSU regional vegetable specialist, evaluating the efficacy and crop safety of bactericides for control of bacterial leaf blight and bulb rots of onion. The team at WSU is collaborating with Beth Gugino at Pennsylvania State University to test 14 bactericide treatments. After applying the treatments, plants were inoculated with Burkholderia gladioli pv. alliicola and Pantoea agglomerans, two of the most common bacterial pathogens of onion in the Columbia Basin. Treatments were also applied to plants that were not inoculated. Each product was

applied three to seven times, depending on the product label. Researchers took weekly foliar disease ratings and crop injury ratings from midJuly through late August. At harvest, they evaluated the incidence of bacterial bulb rot and will check again for bulb rot after five months in storage. They expect to have results to share within a year.

Stop the Rot Powdery Mildew
In addition to hearing from du Toit and several other speakers, field day attendees were able to view the entries in this year’s onion cultivar trial. The trial included 47 entries from seven seed companies. This year’s trial provided an opportunity to see how varieties respond differently to powdery mildew pressure. While powdery mildew is typically not a problem in the Columbia Basin, weather conditions such as slightly higher humidity in July made the disease more prevalent than usual throughout the region, especially in dripand furrow-irrigated fields. WSU’s Carrie Wohleb rated the varieties in the cultivar trial for severity of powdery mildew symptoms. Some cultivars were more severely affected than others. Caliber, Tucannon, Scout and Arcero showed the most severe symptoms, while Ranchero, Vaquero, Aruba and Dulce Reina appeared to be least affected.

Hazera Hosts International Tour By Ben de Nijs, Product Manager Onions, Hazera
P
articipants of an onion study tour organized by Hazera got a glimpse of the onion industry in the small, but onion-minded country of the Netherlands this summer. About every two years, Hazera hosts an international onion study tour for its partners in the onion industry, this time bringing attendees from all over the world to the Netherlands the week of July 29 to Aug. 2. The Netherlands, with the capability to export high-quality onions year-round, is a strong global player in a dynamic onion market. Currently, the country is ranked 12th in onion production, but is the leading exporter of onions. Despite last year’s difficult growing season in which production was down by more than 35 percent, the Dutch were able to export over 800,000 metric tons to over 130 countries.
Dutch Onions
The tour started with a visit to Hazera’s allium breeding station, where onion breeders, pre-breeders, assistant breeders, phytopathologists, entomologists and other Hazera employees active in the research and development department work to improve the onion portfolio. According to the breeders, it’s a continuous process to create new varieties with higher yields, improved disease resistance and tolerance levels, and longer and better storability. Next to this, the breeders are focused on developing varieties with earlier maturities, better uniformity and better firmness.
Hazera’s onion breeder for Europe shows the inbred lines that have been backcrossed.
Later, Chayenne Wiskerke gave a presentation about Wiskerke Onions, a specialist in processing, packing and exporting onions. She mentioned the sustainable projects in which Wiskerke Onions is involved, among them a collaboration with Lamb Weston/

Meijer that uses the residual heat from potato processing to dry onions and to generate heat for the company. She also touched on the importance of the nearby proximity of the harbors that enables cheap, but high-quality shipping. Appropriately, the next visit took the group to Kloosterboer, a company that provides temperature-controlled logistics and partners with others in the produce chain to ensure high-quality shipment. Next, the group toured the harbor of Vlissingen, a strategic location in the province of Zeeland for the export of Dutch onions. The agenda also included a visit to MSP Onions, which grows, packs and ships onions to 65 countries. The company is constructing a fully automated onion processing plant in which physical labor will be minimal. With all the packers, shippers and exporters in the Netherlands, the country has an onion processing capacity of over 40,000 metric tons per week. Another big player in this dynamic market is Waterman Onions, which the group visited later in the week. This company exports 120,000 metric tons per year. Wim Waterman talked to the group about the importance of quality and the need for seed companies such as Hazera to start off every season with the best seeds.
Tour participants inspect freshly harvested set onions, cultivated in northwest Europe to be the earliest fresh onions on the market. After growing small set-bulbs the first year, these bulbs with sizes ranging from 10 to 21 mm, are planted in spring and harvested in July and August.
Research, Recreation
Chris de Visser with Wagening University & Research gave a presentation about Uireka. This project aims to improve the quality of the Dutch onion and to strengthen the current export position of the Netherlands. To this end, researchers are studying onion related diseases. de Visser detailed the research on Fusarium in

onions, mentioning that different sorts of fungus were detected in the Netherlands. Peter van Duijn with Koppert Biological Systems spoke about the importance of using natural enemies and micro-organisms to prevent diseases and keep plants healthy. In addition, Hans van den Oever with Mooij Agro shared information about storage and storing techniques. Lastly, the group visited FlevoTrade, where Piet van Liere discussed export markets and challenges. FlevoTrade exports onions, carrots, potatoes, cabbages and other vegetables. In addition to visiting various onion operations, time was also reserved for leisure. The participants slept in the SS Rotterdam, a former cruise ship that was active on the Holland-America line from 1959 to 2000. They also enjoyed a dinner boat tour on the river Maas and a visit to Neeltje Jans, an artificial island. There, the group saw and heard the stories of the Delta Works, a series of construction projects to protect the land in the southwest part of the country. The Delta Works have been declared one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Throughout the week, tour participants were able to network, exchange information and ideas and collaborate. Based on feedback, tour participants seemed to appreciate the experience.
Tour participants get an up-close look at Hazera’s breeding process, which includes the use of flies and bees for pollination.
The group visits a field of Dormo onions. Dormo is Hazera’s top variety in Europe.
MSP Onions is constructing a fully automated onion processing plant, which is expected to significantly reduce intensive labor.

New Products
Certis Selling New Insecticide
Certis USA is now distributing Requiem Prime, a foliar-applied insecticide to control thrips and mites. An emulsifiable concentrate formulation, Requiem insecticide is powered by a synthesis of terpenes discovered in an insecticidal plant. The active ingredient is attracted to the oily outer surfaces of target pests and is said to work against all lifecycle stages of target pests. Development of resistance is unlikely, according to Certis, making it an option for resistance management, especially alongside other chemistries facing resistance issues. The product has a zero-day pre-harvest interval. Visit www.certisusa.com.

T
he latest efforts to keep the Allium leafminer from disrupting the healthy trade of onions, along with the use of 3-D printing to help improve onion research were among the topics of discussion at the Northern Colorado Variety Field Day on Sept. 5.
Allium Leafminer
René Hardwick, National Onion Association (NOA) director of public and industry relations, shared an update on the Allium leafminer emergence in the U.S. and the NOA’s efforts to help protect the industry from the pest. The NOA is trying to ensure onion-growing states work with their state departments of agriculture to apply for recognition in the Federally Recognized State Managed Phytosanitary Program. This program ensures that allium shipments at ports bound for the states are free of the invasive pest. California has a quarantine and has received recognition in the program, which means port inspectors are actively searching for the presence of Allium leafminer. Any alliums coming into the state will be turned away if the leafminer is present. Oregon and Georgia also are in the process of applying for this designation.
Colorado State University is using a customized planter box device created on a 3-D printer to improve the efficiency of planting onions in research plots.
Field day attendees check out the 39 varieties grown in this year’s onion cultivar trial.

Colorado State University Extension hosts the Northern Colorado Onion Variety Field Day to share research results with the local onion industry.
Research Tools
Colorado State University (CSU) Extension staff showed off a customized planter box device they created on a 3-D printer to improve the efficiency of planting onions in research plots. Because the supply of onion seed for research purposes can be limited, the CSU researchers designed the device to channel onion seed directly over the planter loading seed ring so that fewer onion seeds are needed to plant research plots. The seed box wedge is also easy to remove so the planter box can be cleaned before planting the next variety. The device greatly sped up the process of planting this year’s CSU onion cultivar trial. The trial included 39 varieties, which were evaluated on various parameters including emergence, thrips, maturity date, pink root, Fusarium and Iris yellow spot virus.

From the NOA
A New Use for One of Nature’s Oldest Vegetables
By René Hardwick, National Onion Association Director of Public and Industry Relations
T
he beauty of our product – the onion – is that from seed to bulb to table, we can sing its praises. From the time it leaves the packing shed, it becomes a valuable tool, not only in the American diet, but in daily living. From soothing a bee sting to cleaning a grill, to powering entire processing facilities, the onion is
indeed a marvel of nature. In December, we promise to show you another valuable use of the onion at the National Onion Association’s annual convention, set for Dec. 4-7 in Naples, Florida. This time, in fashion! We are bringing New York fashion designer Maria Elena Pombo, owner of Fragmentario studio in Brooklyn, New York, to the convention to discuss her project called Onion Society. Through it, she has worked with some local fashion design students to create clothes and fabrics died naturally with onion skins – the skins that end up in the trash from local groceries or tilled back into the ground, or even burned in some parts of the world. The four students, from the U.S., China, Japan and India, have naturally dyed yarns, fabrics and textiles to create special textile projects as a part of their masters’ education at New York’s Parsons School of Design.

There’s an entire movement for sustainable textiles, demanding ethically produced clothing, but also environmentally-friendly fabrics and dyes. While modern-day fashion continues to be more geared toward “fast fashion,” on a smaller scale, a trend of natural dyes can only grow. It’s not reinventing the wheel after all. Fabric dyeing dates back to 2600 B.C., using natural resources such as plants, insects and ocean creatures. “We’re all converts for life,” said student Tess Murdoch, noting that onion skin dying has replaced her and her fellow students’ love for synthetic dyes. Red onion skins give a range of colors from pink to burgundy to brown and sometimes green. Yellow onion skins give a range of golden and orange colors. Sometimes they add other naturals such as baking soda or vinegar to bring about even more vibrant colors. The biproduct of the dying process is always natural – enough to go back into the earth for zero waste. We attended the students’ exhibit in Brooklyn in September, a workshop also attended by almost 100 people interested in how using food waste could benefit other areas of life. The pieces represented the myriad of fabrics that onions can dye and just a piece of a larger movement of using food waste in fashion. Now, all this sustainability talk may not be your cup of tea, but it hits on a key ideal of today’s millennials, the largest consumer group shopping today. They want a world with less waste. They want to know that their consumption of products isn’t adding to the trash piles in their local landfills or harming the air we breathe. That’s why they’re using metal drinking containers and buying solar panels and electric cars. They will even pay a premium on products that coincide with their ideals. We recognize onion skins are but a small part of this bigger picture, but it’s a picture represented by the students’ work to show a new way to handle onion waste. We’ll bring a portion of their exhibit with us to our convention in Naples for all to view. Pombo, who teaches workshops on onionskin dyes throughout New York and the world, will walk participants through dyeing their own scarves, as well. This is just one reason to attend our annual convention. Not only is the convention good for networking, it’s also a great place to learn from other onion growers and industry leaders throughout the nation. It’s a place to learn from those who work in all parts of the agriculture industry and those who govern our industry. Join us as we explore yet another use for our favorite vegetable! Go to www.onions-usa.org for information or to register for the convention. Register by Nov. 12.
Student Tess Murdoch explains how certain fabrics pick up colors differently in her exhibit pieces, which were created from onionskin dyed yarns, during the Onion Society exhibit held Sept. 21 in Brooklyn, N.Y. The NOA sponsored the project.
