SeedlingNeedOnions a Hero
When onion seed and seedcorn maggots threaten young crops, our heroes come prepared. FarMore FI-500 and Sepresto seed treatments provide early season disease and insect protection for young onion crops. Seed Dynamics applies the protectant to the seeds themselves, through a safe and controlled delivery. It works at the most critical time — during germination and seedling emergence — so your seeds can thrive, while fending off threats of early damage. Michigan Trial Yields Mixed Results
Photos courtesy Greg Bird, Michigan Onion Committee
Wet spring weather delayed planting. Hot, dry weather made germination variable. But these setbacks didn’t keep a good crowd from showing up to view the results of this year’s Michigan Onion Committee onion variety trial. The trial, which included 29 varieties from seven seed companies, was on display at V&W Farms in Byron Center, Michigan, in mid-August. About 65 people showed up to check out the varieties on display. Organizers say this is a great turnout for the event.
Due to the planting being delayed until May 10 and the variable germination, the results of the trial are not a great indication of how the varieties would typically perform, according to organizers.
However, in addition to viewing the trial, field day attendees had an opportunity to hear presentations from a representative of the Michigan agriculture department; past president of the National Onion Association Doug Bulgrin with Gumz Farms in Wisconsin; and Michigan Senator Roger Victory, who is also a vegetable grower.

Seed Treatments:
What to Know to Protect Your 2023 Onion Crop
By Brian Nault, Department of Entomology, Cornell AgriTech, Cornell University Christy Hoepting, CCE Cornell Vegetable Program
There has been a great deal of interest across the U.S. about how best to protect next year’s onion crop from maggots given the limited supply of spinosad seed treatment (Regard SC). This article focuses on what insecticide seed treatments should be used for managing maggots (Fig. 1) as well as what fungicide seed treatments should be used to manage the disease complex (damping off, stunting and onion smut) in major production regions across the U.S. In all cases, there are no rescue treatments once onions are either infested with maggots or infected with these pathogens. Therefore, selecting effective seed treatments is especially critical for protecting the onion crop.
Maggot Pests, EarlySeason Diseases
Onion maggot (Delia antiqua) is the dominant maggot species that infests onion in the Great Lakes region, while seedcorn maggot (Delia platura) is the principal species in all other production
Aregions. In the Great Lakes, both maggot species routinely damage onions, and this requires a strategy that will control both.
Onion smut (Urocystis cepulae) is a fungal disease that infects onion seedlings and can either kill seedlings or render bulbs unmarketable (Fig. 2). Onion smut is a major disease of onion grown in the Great Lakes region and can be a problem in certain locations in the western U.S., but it is typically not a concern in other production areas. In contrast, Rhizoctonia spp., which are one of the causes of stunting, are not a major issue for onions in the Great Lakes, but can be a problem elsewhere.
Differences in pest and disease status between onion production regions should be considered when selecting early-season management approaches, especially seed treatments. In Table 1, active ingredients are listed as well as their relative efficacy on onion maggot, seedcorn maggot, onion smut and damping off diseases.
Insecticides
Regard
BRegard SC is a formulation of the active ingredient spinosad, which has excellent activity on both onion maggot and seedcorn maggot. This active ingredient is owned by Corteva, and Syngenta has been contracting with Corteva to offer it as part of its FarMore FI500 seed treatment package. In addition to Regard, the FarMore FI500 package includes the insecticide Cruiser 70WS (thiamethoxam) and the three fungicides in FarMore F300 (Apron XL, Maxim and Dynasty) (Table 1).
Earlier this year, Syngenta ended its contract with Corteva. There is a limited supply of Regard remaining and it will likely be gone by the end of the year.
There are no plans for Regard to be available after supplies are gone. There is uncertainty as to whether spinosad will be available as an onion seed treatment in the future.
28 Onion World • November 2022
Figure 1. Onion maggots actively feed on an onion seedling (photo A). Onion maggot feeding results in damage to onion plants (photo B). Photos courtesy Erica Moretti, Cornell University
Trigard
Trigard OMC will be available for the 2023 season. Syngenta will continue to offer “FarMore FI500 with Trigard” as a seed treatment package. This FarMore package will include both insecticides Trigard and Cruiser, as well as the FarMore F300 fungicide package (Table 1). Trigard also can be applied without Crusier. Trigard currently works very well on onion maggot, but it is not very effective against seedcorn maggot.
Cruiser
Cruiser is poor on onion maggot control, but may provide limited control of seedcorn maggot (Table 1). The combination of Trigard and Cruiser should protect the onion crop from maggot damage in the Great Lakes region, but it is not a viable option for seedcorn maggot control in other production regions.
Sepresto
Sepresto contains two insecticide active ingredients, clothianidin and imidacloprid. Sepresto has not performed well against onion maggot in New York, but has performed fair to good against seedcorn maggot in the western U.S. (Table 1). In the absence of Regard SC, Sepresto would be the best seed treatment option for seedcorn maggot control.
Non-Seed Treatment Options
There are not effective insecticide options other than seed treatments for maggot control in the Great Lakes region. Past research in New York in muck-grown onion examined the following products and none controlled maggots: 1) infurrow drench treatments of Entrust SC (spinosad), Admire Pro (imidacloprid), Verimark (cyantraniliprole), Coragen (chlorantraniliprole) and Capture LFR (bifenthrin); 2) pre-plant incorporated treatment of Diazinon AG500 (diazinon); 3) post-emergent banded applications
(two-leaf stage when flies were active) of either Radiant (spinetoram), Exirel (cyantraniliprole) or Mustang Maxx (zetacypermethrin).
In Washington state, Diazinon AG500 (diazinon) is effective when applied preplant and mechanically incorporated.
Insecticide Resistance Concerns
Resistance to insecticides is a concern for onion maggot, but not as much for seedcorn maggot (based on their different life histories). Onion maggot

Individually, these fungicides are not rated for their activity against the different damping off pathogens because we have no research results from New York. However, FarMore F300 and FI500 packages seem to have provided fair control of damping off in New York trials. *Other labeled formulations such as Ultra Flourish for mefenoxam, and Penncozeb or Roper for mancozeb Green highlights Excellent pest control Yellow highlights Poor pest control Table 1. has developed resistance to insecticides like chlorpyrifos (e.g., Lorsban). The threat of onion maggot developing resistance to spinosad (Regard) and to cyromazine (Trigard) is relatively high because both active ingredients have been used as seed treatments on onion for many years. Regard and Trigard belong to different modes of action: IRAC Groups 5 and 17, respectively (Table 1). Therefore, the best approach for avoiding resistance is to rotate Regard and Trigard on an annual basis for onion maggot control. Given the limited availability of Regard for 2023 and uncertainty about spinosad’s future availability as a seed treatment, rotating active ingredients will be difficult to impossible until a new chemistry becomes available.
2023 Insecticide Seed Treatment Recommendations
FarMore F1500 with Regard
FarMore FI500 with Regard provides excellent protection against onion maggot and seedcorn maggot in all production regions (Table 1). In the Great Lakes, this option would be especially good if FarMore FI500 with Trigard was used in 2022 because rotating to another chemistry class will mitigate resistance development to spinosad and cyromazine. Moreover, if spinosad is not available as a seed treatment in the future, FarMore FI500 with Trigard can be used in future years until a new product becomes available.
FarMore F1500 with Trigard
FarMore FI500 with Trigard should provide excellent protection against onion maggot and adequate protection against seedcorn maggot in the Great Lakes (Table 1). This option would be especially good if FarMore FI500 with Regard was used in 2022 because rotating to another chemistry class will mitigate resistance development to spinosad and cyromazine. Note that if Trigard is applied in the absence of Cruiser (e.g., not part of FarMore FI500 package), seedcorn maggot will not be adequately controlled. For onion maggot, Trigard/Regard + Cruiser improved control only slightly (by 5-10 percent), if at all, compared with Trigard/Regard alone. This is not a good option for
regions where seedcorn maggot is the dominant species because Trigard will not be effective.
Sepresto
Sepresto may provide adequate maggot control. In the Great Lakes, Sepresto could be an option in onion fields where onion maggot damage is expected to be low. If seedcorn maggot pressure is high, Sepresto could be added to Trigard to manage the maggot complex. However, the combination of Sepresto + Trigard has not been evaluated for efficacy or phytoxicity. Research trials in 2023 will examine this option. In the western U.S., Sepresto has consistently worked well for seedcorn maggot control in Tulelake, California, but it provided inconsistent results in Washington trials.
Fungicides
Onion Smut Control
None of the three fungicides included in the FarMore F300 package have activity on onion smut, but they do have some activity on damping off pathogens (Table 1). Growers in the Great Lakes region and some locations in the western U.S. will have to order EverGol Prime for control of onion smut. Since it first became available in 2019, EverGol Prime has become the premier option for onion smut control as its performance is far superior to Pro Gro.
When EverGol Prime is used with FarMore F300, it is not necessary to order additional seed treatments for control of damping off. Mancozeb and/or mefenoxam (Ridomil) could be applied as an in-furrow drench for additional protection against damping off. If EverGol Prime is used without a FarMore package, then another fungicide with activity on damping off should be included in the seed treatment (Table 1). Generally, a mancozeb in-furrow drench is not needed for control of onion smut with EverGol Prime seed treatment. However, some red onion varieties that appear to be more susceptible to onion smut have benefited from inclusion of a mancozeb in-furrow drench in addition to EverGol Prime seed treatment for improved control of onion smut, according to on-farm demonstrations in
New York where the mancozeb
was turned off compared to where it was used in the rest of the field.

Added Value
Story and photos by Dave Alexander, Publisher
Added value involves piling on extra features that go beyond the standard product offering. When you receive added value, you get that warm, fuzzy feeling that comes from getting something extra that you didn’t account for or have to pay for.
If the new widget you buy on eBay comes with free shipping, that’s added value. If you get a haircut and the barber trims your beard for free, that’s added value. If you advertise in Onion World, you get added value in the digital online issue for no extra charge. If you attend a field day to view onion varieties and also get to see new and edgy technology, that is also added value.
That last example of this typical sales technique is exactly what attendees got when they attended the Seminis Onion Experience+ Field Day event in Payette, Idaho, on Aug. 22, presented by Vegetables by Bayer.
Varieties
On display at the Seminis facility in Payette were the company’s onion varieties and specialty crops such as carrots and peppers, as well as high-tech companies that had no relation to Vegetables by Bayer.
Added value, though cool, is never the main focus, and that

was the case at the Onion Experience. The main attraction was new Seminis varieties Crusher, Almanzoro and Hatchet. Richard Navarrete addressed the attendees first, explaining the benefits of these yellows.
“Almanzoro is a full, strict retail onion. It has very nice scale and good scale balance,” Navarrete said.
He went on to explain that storage onions sometimes have heavy skin buildup and may show some black mold through the storage season.
“That’s not what Almanzoro is going to do,” he continued, adding that the storage variety is also adapted to overhead irrigation.
Crusher, launched in 2020, is the variety Navarrete calls the “flagship” for Seminis in the Treasure Valley. It has very high single centers and stores through April.
Seminis breeder Scott Hendricks said Crusher really performed last year and wasn’t bothered at all by the heat. It produced high yields and didn’t come in early despite the high temperatures.
This year, a cold June preceded record high temperatures in Payette. The company’s test plots were also defoliated by a hailstorm. Despite these challenges, the onions in Payette looked fantastic.
‘If things aren’t perfect, it’s still going to make a crop,” Hendricks said of Crusher.
The final new variety also considered by Navarrete as a “flagship” for Seminis is Hatchet. The variety has great size potential, yield and top strength, high single centers and stores very well. It comes in a little later than Crusher.

Pipeline
Hendricks told attendees about new red varieties in the pipeline. Varieties 1608 and 1610 (which matures a little later than 1608) are both onions with low pungency that scored well in consumer taste tests. They will be perfect for salad bar-type markets.
As a company, Seminis is really pushing hard on “bullet centers” that will store well.
“That’s an exciting part of the program. We have combined that long storage-type onion with the heavier skins, and now you can get that in a single-center profile,” Hendricks said. He adds that many of Seminis’ varieties will require less inputs, especially nitrogen, to produce the same yields, saving growers money while increasing sustainability.
Extras
The added value of this year’s event was provided by the aforementioned specialty crops, high-tech companies Parabug and Carbon Robotics and free tacos for lunch.
Developed by a California farmer, Parabug uses drones to drop beneficial insects onto fields, saving labor. Application can be done on wet fields in wet conditions, in hilly terrain and is much more uniform than hand applications, according to the company.
Carbon Robotics brought its autonomous laser weeder out to Payette and put it through its paces. Though the company isn’t currently selling the driverless unit, it is taking orders for tractor-pulled weeders that use the same artificial intelligence and lasers to target and kill weeds that the robotic unit uses.
Though there was plenty to see at this year’s event, attendees of future Onion Experiences can expect bigger events and even more added value.
“If you thought this year was fun, wait until you see what we do next year!” Navarrete said.

Defending Against Heat
Story and photos by Dave Alexander, Publisher
At the annual Crookham Company Onion Reveal, held Aug. 23 in Wilder, Idaho, yellow onion variety Defender was a frequent topic of conversation, as was the insufferable heat in the Treasure Valley. The day before the Reveal marked a record 21 consecutive days of tripledigit temperatures in the area. Last year was another scorcher, with record high temps in June.
Talk of heat led to talk of Defender in Wilder. Defender produced a lush canopy despite the heat. A welldeveloped canopy with tall, strong shoots protects the onion bulbs underneath. Representatives from Crookham and the producers that grew the variety are
happy with the new 118-day yellow.
Dave Whitwood, Crookam onion breeder, says Defender has a strong root system underneath it and that it can work on older ground.
“Growers are really excited about the canopy, and they are glad they picked an onion that could handle the environmental pressure we put on them this year,” Whitwood says.
Zane Beams, western sales manager with Seedway, agrees.
“Defender has strong, waxy tops that handle heat stress. And better vigor makes onions stronger to better handle heat,” Beams says.
Defender seed production limited
the number of units grown this year, but Lyndon Johnson with Crookham expects many more acres to be grown in 2023. Growers are already asking about Defender seed for 2023, and the company expects to be able to supply all orders next year.
Johnson says like all of Crookham’s options, Defender is single-centered and can grow up to 4 inches for ringing.
“We’re shooting for a 70-30 split – 70 percent jumbos and 30 percent mediums,” Johnson says. “If you look at the U.S. retail market, 66 percent of onions are sold singly, as a jumbo.”
Crookham’s other new variety released last year, Epic, has also shown good

results and may convert onion growers in the Treasure Valley to pivot irrigation, according to Johnson. The IdahoEastern Oregon area uses drip irrigation primarily, but because Epic grows well under pivots, it gives growers in the area options. Growers using pivot-irrigated Epic will save the annual cost of drip tape and still produce a storable crop, Johnson says.
“Epic and Trident under pivot are holding their own in the Columbia Basin,” Beam adds.
Though Crookham has nothing new commercially available in 2023, the company did have new varieties on display at the Onion Reveal that are in pilot production. These varieties will be in block trials in the Columbia Basin, Wisconsin and New York next year. After the block trials and expanded future adaptability trials to determine which onions will work best in which markets, some of these new products will be named and go on sale in the next year or two, ensuring onion growers will have the right onion seed for their operations.

Cultivars Overcome Weather Challenges
WSU ONION FIELD DAY
A crew from Crookham Company inspects onions in the Washington State University onion cultivar trial.
was a tough year to grow onions across the Columbia Basin of Washington, mostly due to erratic spring conditions and a rather warm summer. Despite the early-season weather challenges, the Washington State University (WSU) onion cultivar trial produced some good results. Stands were uniform, most of the cultivars produced bulbs uniform in size and shape, and most had good yields. There were fewer colossal onions this year compared to some past trials, but there were plenty of jumbos. The size and appearance of many of the red cultivars was especially impressive to evaluators.
With 53 varieties from seven seed companies on display at Grigg Farms near Quincy, Washington, on Aug. 25, field day attendees were invited to check out the trial and listen to project updates and recommendations from researchers.
Tim Waters, a WSU area extension educator, urged growers to be on the lookout for yellow nutsedge. The weed is becoming increasingly problematic in the Columbia Basin, among other regions. The weed is fairly easy to identify once you’ve seen it a few times, he said. However, it’s often mistaken for grass at first glance. Although it does look similar to grass, yellow nutsedge has a triangular stem and generally has three leaves growing from the base of the plant. Most of the cultivars in the Washington State University onion cultivar trial produced bulbs uniform in size and shape.
2022
Tim Waters with Washington State University reports on his latest research.
WSU
While the weed does produce seeds, yellow nutsedge is mostly spread by its underground tubers or nutlets. The tubers are about one-third the size of a pencil eraser and spread very quickly via tillage equipment. Any equipment including planters, rippers, discs or any machinery that gets soil on it can move these troublesome tubers. To prevent this, growers should work non-infested parts of the field first and finish in the part of the field that has yellow nutsedge. In addition, it is vital to very thoroughly clean any equipment that has been in an infested field before it is used in another field.
Small patches of nutsedge can be eradicated by digging down 1.5 or 2 feet to remove the plant and all its tubers. The use of Roundup is not very effective, Waters cautioned, as it doesn’t translocate enough through the plant to really kill it. In onions, Outlook can be somewhat effective for yellow nutsedge suppression, but not the best, he added. Instead, it’s important to attack nutsedge while the field is planted in a rotation crop. Specifically, herbicides labeled for use in corn, such as Sandea and Yukon, can be effective.

Focus on Food Safety Continues at NOA Annual Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona

year at the National Onion Association’s (NOA) annual December convention in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Samir Assar, director of food safety for the Food and Drug Administration. This is a perfect opportunity for your operations’ food safety administrators and managers to get some one-on-one time with the FDA to get your questions answered.
The visit will continue conversations from our summer convention in Boise, Idaho, when the NOA revealed its updated Bulb Onion Food Safety Guidelines document. If you haven’t received a copy, you may find one on the NOA website at www.onions-usa.org/all-about-onions.
“This document represents the best in our industry – the best science, the best practices and the best intentions to instill confidence in all who eat onions that the U.S. dry bulb onion industry is committed to providing a safe, sustainable product,” said Greg Yielding, executive vice president and chief executive of the NOA.
The United States dry bulb onion industry established a food safety framework and guidance document in 2010. The updated document takes into account new scientific findings and the evolution in onion production and handling practices across the United States.
The updated guidelines were in response to two reported food safety outbreaks in the last two years that were alleged to have come from onions. Many onion growers throughout the country remain unconvinced the outbreaks occurred on their farms or under their handling. Many believe if onions were the focus of the outbreaks, they would have come in contact with contaminants further
At the Boise summer convention, several farmers questioned FDA representatives during the final morning crop report breakfast. Yielding said the discussion needs to continue, as there remained some unanswered questions from that meeting. But Yielding said he also heard from many attendees that they wished they would have brought their food safety personnel to the convention to hear the discussions.
Samir Assar has been the director of the division of Produce Safety for the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition since 2008. He has led the development of FDA’s policy, regulation and guidance on produce safety, including those mandated
by the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act.
His bio states, “Dr. Assar is committed to enhancing partnerships with produce safety stakeholders and has collaboratively forged initiatives and agreements aimed at protecting public health.
“Dr. Assar also serves as the FDA project leader for the Western Center for Food Safety at the University of California - Davis, whose focus is on research, education and outreach on production agriculture and food safety issues.”
The NOA convention will take place Dec. 7-10 in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia. Registration is $850 for the event ($450 for spouses/friends), and you can register through the Member Center at www. onions-usa.org/members/conventions.
