The Salty Dog 6-Hour Enduro is one of the longest running mountain bike races in BC. Cyclists of all ages can join in the fun the second weekend in May. The annual Salty Street Festival in downtown Salmon Arm is a great family event.

North Shuswap SALUTE TO THE SOCKEYE

Visit Tsutswecw Provincial Park, anytime from late September to late October, and you’ll find trails leading to riverside viewing platforms with interpretive signage providing information on the Sockeye Salmon Park Hours: Daily from 9AM - 4PM.

The SecwEpemc First Nation

The history of THE SECWépemc Peoples in the Shuswap dates back over 10,000 years.

HEAR THE LEGENDS FROM KNOWLEDGE KEEPERS.

Come hear the legends and tour the traditional lands and waters of the Secwépemc people, learn the history from local Knowledge Keepers, enjoy traditional feasts of bannock and salmon, admire traditional crafts or join in a local pow wow. Find the deep meaning and powerful lessons of this sacred homeland.

The area is named after the Secwépemc, an important Salish nation that has always inhabited the BC interior. Come live this history. The stories of the Secwépemc people are woven together by their history, legends, water, animals, and land. To understand Secwépemc stories you must understand the journeys they have taken from generation to generation and how it has shaped the culture today.

In the Shuswap, there is one nation and four bands each unique and deeply connected to the lands and the waters. In fact, ‘Shuswap’ means meeting of the waters and this sacred watershed is a legacy that we all work to honour and preserve.

Year-round, you can visit a kekuli and take in the stories of the Secwépemc people or experience a healing ceremony in a sweat lodge. In the summer months, experience a traditional journey by canoe. Follow the path of ancestors to truly appreciate the importance of the Shuswap through its legends and stories, the greatest of which is the enduring life cycle of the sockeye salmon.

CELEBRATE THE ADAMS RIVER

SOCKEYE SALMON RUN

During October, the banks of the Adams River, 405 km inland from the Pacific Ocean, host a natural miracle

Each fall, the quiet waters of the Adams River welcome Sockeye salmon returning to their home waters to spawn. The fish are completing a journey that takes them far out into the Pacific, then upstream against swift currents and rapids all the way up to Alaska and the Aleutian Islands and back again, traveling over 4,000 kms in their lifetime. The Adams River is one of the most important Sockeye salmon breeding areas in North America.

Various other species also return to the Adams River throughout the summer and fall. Watch for Pink, Chinook, and Coho salmon, as well as Rainbow trout and Steelhead trout. View the salmon and

other species from the banks of the Adams River, in Tsútswecw Provincial Park, where you can also explore 26 km of trails offering other exceptional salmon viewing opportunities.

This salmon run has helped to sustain the local Indigenous communities for thousands of years. The Little Shuswap Band and the Adams River Salmon Society host the “Salute to the Sockeye” celebration to celebrate the importance of the salmon to the history and culture of the local Secwépemc people and to the local environment.

Country charm goes well beyond our enchanting scenery no matter what time of year you visit.

Come relax in this small, tranquil community, where life is full and the pace is deliciously relaxed. Falkland is a settlement of over 800 residents near Highway 97‚ halfway between Kamloops and Vernon. It’s recognized as a ranching community, but forestry, small business, farming and exceptional retirement amenities are all part of the story here.

Drive from Salmon Arm to Falkland through the scenic Salmon Valley, where you will discover a peaceful rural setting, the back drop for the renowned Caravan Farm Theatre. Stop at the small community of Silver Creek to explore the multi-use trails at Haines Creek.

Travel south of Salmon Arm on Highway 97B through Ranchero and west to Gardom Lake, an ideal spot for fishing and picnicking for the whole family. Continue further south on Highway 97B

Of all the wonderful ways to explore the region, houseboating shines as a true Shuswap experience. With warm lakes and hundreds of kms of shoreline to discover, taking to the water on a houseboat offers unparalleled freedom and variety.

How about a game of mini golf! There are three courses to choose from - one in Sicamous, one in Canoe and one in Scotch Creek. If you’re headed out to the North Shuswap head to the Scotch Creek Family Fun Centre to enjoy outdoor laser tag and batting cages, or an indoor arcade. Rent an e-scooter or quadraped to cruise the community and provincial park.

History buffs will enjoy Silver Beach Provincial Park, located in Seymour Arm, at the site of Ogden City, an old gold rush town. Seymour Arm, as it’s now known, is worth the cruise (via forest service road or water) for the laid back atmosphere, sandy beach and destination campground.

Save the last weekend in July for Salmon Arm’s acclaimed ROOTSandBLUES festival — a highlight of BC’s music scene. The ROOTSandBLUES festival showcases some of the world’s best blues, world, folk, zydeco, alternative, funk, and reggae music, all in the welcoming, visually arresting setting of the Shuswap!

This incredibly popular outdoor music festival draws over 25,000 enthusiastic attendees and features musicians from Canada and around the world. The festival has become a prominent link on the national festival circuit and is considered among the top roots festivals in Canada.

The sounds are great, the atmosphere is incomparable, and there’s music and activities for all members of the family. Children 12 and under admitted free with adults.

With over 1500 km of quiet paved back roads and 470km of mountain bike trails and cross-country tracks, the Shuswap is a hub of lakeside culture that has found some serious fun cruising the green hills and valleys.

Century Ride: A picturesque, rolling 100 km route with stunning views of old farms, rivers, valleys, and the iconic Enderby Cliffs. Larch Hills Traverse: An epic 42 km highland cross-country romp through the forests, fens, and dramatic lake vistas of the Larch Hills, linking the communities of Salmon Arm and Sicamous, as well as linking into the South Canoe Trail System, the Larch Hills Nordic Trail System, the Rubberhead Mountain Bike Trail system, and the Hyde Mountain Lookout and Sicamous Greenway trail systems.

Western Grebe: The Shuswap’s flagship species. Catch their signature dance from May to June at the Marine Park wharf.

American White Pelicans: Found at Peter Jannink Park and Christmas Island in early May, and again in August.

Lazuli Bunting: Watch for them on fenceposts and powerlines in Tappen Valley.

Warblers: 14 species! Count ‘em at the Nature Reserve or Gardom Lake.

Peregrine Falcon: Cross it off your birding bucket list at Peter Jannink Park.

Calliope Hummingbird: This tiniest hummingbird hovers around Sunnybrae Road.

Shorebirds: Find over 35 species at the Salmon Arm Marsh!

In fact, our widely varied habitat of rivers, lakes, and wetlands attracts over 300 bird species to the Shuswap, some 63 per cent of all species found in BC. In the spring and fall, the shorelines are a haven for a wide variety of migratory birds. Large numbers of waterfowl and many other birds grace the skies and waterways of the region. Watch Osprey and Blue Herons fishing. Bring your binoculars to look on as Bald Eagles feed their young.

Perhaps one of the most enchanting Shuswap experiences to be had is witnessing the walking on water dance of the Western Grebe.

The Western Grebe has established only two breeding colonies in BC and one of them isright here in Salmon Arm Bay.

Birding is a wonderful way to learn about the natural surroundings, too. Numerous tree species, wildflowers and mushroom varieties flourish in the Shuswap’s temperate zone, while large and small animals thrive in its lush habitats.

At the Salmon Arm Marine Park by the wharf, visit the award-winning Interpretive Centre operated by the Salmon Arm Bay Nature Enhancement Society.

The Bird Blind and Osprey Nest viewing trail is found on the west side of the boat launch in front of the Prestige Harbourfront Resort, and links into the west walkway. The east walkway from the Wharf parking lot will connect you to the Raven Trail, viewing platforms and Christmas Island.

Deep snow, powder filled open bowls, endless meadows, groomed trails, breathtaking alpine scenery and spectacular lake views. From Sicamous you can access Blue Lake, Eagle Pass, Owlhead and Queest on regularly groomed forest service roads. Each area has a cozy cabin to warm up in.

From Salmon Arm, follow groomed trails from Fly Hills to Skimikin, and free-ride through open meadows and clear cuts, and rest in one of several warming huts.

For truly unforgettable sledding, venture to open, undulating, high alpine meadows at Crowfoot in the North Shuswap. This remote area features the Grizzly Lodge, one of BC’s most desirable sled-in lodges.
