Words of Wisdom The Bible has a word that describes the person who navigates life well. That word is “wise.” Wisdom is a rich concept with many layers of meaning; however, it’s best defined as “the skill of living.” It is a practical knowledge that helps one know how to act and speak in different situations. It entails the ability to avoid problems and the skill to handle them when they present themselves. It helps us scale the complexities of circumstances and relationships and interpret what people are saying to us. A wise person listens to understand, receive guidance and become even wiser. Solomon’s Book of Proverbs begins with a list of purposes for teaching people wisdom. In chapter 1, verses 2-4, he states: “Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise … to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just and fair … [to] give insight to the simple, knowledge and discernment to the young” (NLT). In this year’s edition of the Visitor Calendar, we asked some of our senior members to impart words of wisdom and the Bible texts that guide their lives. They shared stories, experiences, memories and, included here, sage advice for navigating life well. Each month we’re providing a call to prayer, ideas for outreach and opportunities to engage with us for giveaways. We hope you’ll enjoy the calendar and ask for additional copies to share.
