Focus on the process, not the goal. The difference between people who achieve their goals and those who don’t isn’t the goals themselves; it’s the processes—the consistent, habitual behaviors put in place to reach those goals.

Enjoy the Journey

F

or most of us, improving our health is the top resolution each new year. Going in, we have such good intentions: dust off that treadmill, drink more water, lose 20 pounds. But, as reported by U.S. News & World Report, 80 percent of us fail to keep these annual pledges.

From its own research, Gold’s Gym declares that “February 9th is the ‘Fitness Cliff’—the day when New Year’s Resolutions go astray, gym check-ins begin to steadily decline and members begin to lose focus on their goals.”

For the 2020 Columbia Union Calendar, we teamed up with Pacific Press’ Vibrant Life magazine to offer inspirational, bite-sized, healthy suggestions that we hope will inspire you to try something new as you journey toward whole health. As you consider these practical ideas and work toward your resolutions, we pray that, above all, you’ll enjoy the journey. Blessings and Courage, Dave Weigley, President Rob Vandeman, Executive Secretary Emmanuel Asiedu, Treasurer

Laugh more.

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones (Prov. 17:22). Laughter offers more than just a quick pick-me-up—it boosts your immune system, relieves pain, improves mood, soothes tension, relieves stress and increases blood flow and blood vessel function.

Clear the clutter.

Solomon said that for everything there is a season, a time to keep things and a time to throw things away (Eccl. 3:6). When you live in a cluttered space, it can increase anxiety, decrease your productivity, lower the quality of your sleep and make you more likely to overeat. That’s why spring cleaning is good for your body, mind and spirit!

Make space for God.

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit? (1 Cor. 6:19). Prayer activates what is known as “the relaxation response,” which helps slow down your heart rate, lower blood pressure and calm your breathing. Church attendance and spiritual health have also been associated with increasing one’s quality of life.

A friend loves at all times (Prov. 17:17). According to a study from Harvard University, having no friends can be as deadly as smoking! The social support that comes with friendship reduces stress, increases sense of purpose, improves self-confidence, promotes healthy habits, aids in coping with trauma and may even help you live longer.

Dear friend, I pray that you may prosper in every way and be in good health physically just as you are spiritually (3 John 1:2). Research has confirmed what you already know: If exercise feels like a chore, you don’t want to do it. But when you find an activity that you enjoy, you’re more likely to stick with it.

When you eat or drink or do anything else, always do it to honor God (1 Cor. 10:31). A diet rich in fruit and vegetables can lower blood pressure, positively affect blood sugar, promote weight loss, prevent some types of cancer and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Mind your manners.

Be kind and compassionate to one another (Eph. 4:32). When you perform an act of kindness, your levels of oxytocin—the “happiness hormone”—rise, improving your mood and making you feel less anxious. It also decreases your stress and boosts your immune system. And it could even help you live longer!

About the

COLUMBIA UNION CONFERENCE

T

he Columbia Union Conference, established in 1907 to coordinate the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s work in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia, is part of the worldwide Protestant denomination of 20 million members in more than 200 countries. At the union level, we connect and provide administrative leadership, governance and support services to our conferences, schools, health care networks and ministries. Each year our organizations sponsor dozens of programs and projects that address human need, improve quality of life and introduce people to Jesus.
