Welcome to the Columbia Union Conference Year of the Bible. Throughout 2021, we will place special emphasis on the primacy of the Word of God and how it informs and impacts our mission, ministries and lives. During this special year, we invite you to join us in spending more time reading the Bible, digging deeper for knowledge and understanding, and meditating on its precepts, promises and prophecies. At a time when many of Christ’s followers turned away, Jesus asked His disciples, “'Do you also want to go away?' But Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life’” (John 6:67–68, NKJV). This year, let us turn to the Bible, where we will find words of life, words of love, words of compassion, words of peace and words of hope. Study them. Live them. Share them. In His Service, Dave Weigley, President Rick Remmers, Executive Secretary Emmanuel Asiedu, Treasurer
of life Got a Minute? This year’s principal contributor for our calendar and 1-minute video devotional series—sponsored by Kettering Adventist HealthCare—is Steve Carlson, chaplain at Kettering College (Ohio). He enjoys finding creative ways to provide spiritual nurture and care to a student population that’s always on the go— even if it's just for one minute.
Join the Journey To help you dig deeper into God’s Holy Word this year, we’re offering:
•
Every Day—Read our Words of Life daily devotional book that features favorite Bible verses from members, pastors, students and leaders from across the Columbia Union.
•
Every Week—Delivered straight to your email, read our e-newsletter by subscribing to Visitor News Bulletin at columbiaunionvisitor.com/vnb. Keep up with the latest Year of the Bible events, devotionals, videos and more.
• Every Month—This calendar, themed “Words of Life,”
coincides with the devotional book and videos. It features a biblical topic and verse each month, with additional passages for further exploration, study and ideas on how to apply the concepts in your daily life.
“The Bible paints a beautiful picture of a God who will go to any length to bring physical, emotional, relational, mental and spiritual healing to our lives,” he says. “I can’t wait to journey through the Word with you and look at some of our favorite passages together! This year, more than ever before, let’s make it a priority to read, study, memorize, recite, discuss, share, post, tweet and meditate on Scripture.”

At the heart of the Bible is a realization that our lives are lived in response to the compassion demonstrated through Jesus—a compassion that has no limits and leans into the pain of others. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you (Eph. 4:32, NIV).

As we read God's love letter, the Bible, we can see what true love is all about. God so loved the world that He gave, served and loved, so that we, in turn, can pass that love on to others. Do everything in love (1 Cor. 16:14, NIV).

The Bible is Courage
MARCH SU NDAY
One of the most consistent commands in the Bible is “do not be afraid.” We aren’t told this because there’s nothing fearful in life, but rather because we serve a God who’s stronger and more powerful than anything this world can throw at us. Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power (Eph. 6:10, NIV).

Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest (Matt. 11:28, NIV). This Bible passage covers all of us. We all feel the weight of life sometimes, but, the closer we move toward Jesus, the more our soul is at rest. Doesn't that sound good?

The Bible is Beauty
M AY SU NDAY
The Bible doesn’t hold back when it describes each of us as the handiwork of God. You are God's beautiful creation, and He loves you so much! For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Eph. 2:10, NIV).

The Bible is Hope
JUNE SU NDAY
Don't you love the word “unswervingly”? It's difficult for new drivers to keep the car from swerving. God's desire is for us to keep the car of our life moving directly toward Him, without detouring. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful (Heb. 10:23, NIV).

The closer we move toward Jesus, the more peace we find. Our peace does not come from receiving what we ask, but from walking with the God who guards our hearts and minds. Much of life is temporary. So when the Bible promises something that no one can take away, it’s easy to see what a gift that is. The Bible reminds us that joy is a gift from God! The Bible is Salvation
D EC E M B E R SU NDAY
M O NDAY
5
Salvation is free, and it’s yours, because Jesus has done the work. The same Jesus Who holds heaven and earth in His hands has called us friend. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12, NIV).
