LIVING OUT OUR PURPOSE
Welcome to 2023! A year for new opportunities, healthier living, stronger relationships and a deeper spiritual walk with God.
This year, our 2023 Columbia Union Conference calendar, themed “Living Out Our Purpose,” focuses on the Columbia Union’s priorities and values, which were voted by the union’s executive committee for the remainder of the 2021–2026 quinquennium.
These priorities and values embody a wholistic approach to stay relevant by recognizing and addressing the current needs in our world and responding to them as Jesus did—with love, compassion and purpose. They identify those things that we must be intentional about in moving the mission forward.
We can do nothing without Christ at the center. As such, we wholeheartedly embrace these priorities and values by striving to exemplify a spirit of Christlikeness. With Jesus at the forefront, the fruits of the Spirit will naturally grow and thrive within us.
Jesus was extremely committed to His Father’s priorities and values in everything He did and said. Let us experience the mission by being intentional in advancing and emphasizing the initiatives that have defined us as a union. We hope that each member will join us this year as we live by, in, and through the Word of God, implementing these priorities and values in our lives, churches, schools and ministries throughout the Columbia Union and beyond.
Blessings and Courage,

WE LOVE
because He first loved us.
If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
And this commandment we have from Him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
—1 John 4:19–21, ESV
SPIRITUAL RENEWAL
He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.—Psalm 23:3, ESV
MISSION ENGAGEMENT
Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which He obtained with His own blood.—Acts 20:28, ESV
NOTES
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
—Philippians 2:3–4, ESV
EDUCATION
Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.—Proverbs 22:6, ESV
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
—James 2:15–17, ESVEXCELLENCE
Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity.
—Titus 2:7, ESV
INTEGRITY
Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord! —Psalm 119:1, ESV
RESPECT
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.—Romans 12:9–10, ESV
EQUALITY
There is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.—Galatians 3:28, ESV
UNITY
May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.—Romans 15:5–6, ESV
DIVERSITY
And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at [the] table in the kingdom of God.—Luke 13:29, ESV
SERVICE
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.
—1 Peter 4:10, ESV
