GLOBAL LEADERSHIP AWARDS 20TH ANNUAL GALA A VIRTUAL CELEBRATION
A WELCOME FROM THE DEAN SIPA’s Global Leadership Awards Annual Gala—now in its 20th year—is a special moment for our community to pay tribute to leaders and artists who inspire us, to support our remarkable students, and to celebrate SIPA’s ongoing impact in the world. For close to 75 years, SIPA has educated the next generation of policy leaders and contributed our knowledge to address significant global challenges. Our honorees this evening embody this vital mission and the commitment of our students, faculty, alumni and partners to drive progress in the global public interest. This year, we present Global Leadership Awards to two outstanding individuals. We honor Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, for her leadership in helping to ensure the stability of the global economic and financial system. We are privileged to recognize the late Vartan Gregorian, Former President of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, for his lifetime of achievements in furthering education, democracy, and international peace and security. And, for the first time, we are pleased to present SIPA’s inaugural Global Inspiration Award to two internationally renowned musicians—the pianist Lang Lang and the mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato — in recognition of their dedication and outstanding contributions as cultural ambassadors. We thank each of our honorees, and we thank you, for joining us this evening for our first-ever virtual Gala. Your support directly benefits student financial aid and will help ensure that SIPA remains at the forefront of global public policy research, training and engagement. We hope you enjoy this year’s Gala. Sincerely,
Merit E. Janow
Dean, School of International and Public Affairs Professor of Professional Practice, International Economic Law and International Affairs

Multi-Grammy Award winner and 2018 Olivier Award winner for Outstanding Achievement in Opera, Kansas-born Joyce DiDonato entrances audiences across the globe. She has soared to the top of the industry both as a performer, gaining international prominence in operas by Handel and Mozart, as well as through her wide-ranging, acclaimed discography. Ms. DiDonato is also widely acclaimed for the bel canto roles of Rossini and Donizetti. She is a fierce advocate for the arts in a multitude of ways. As a board member of Carnegie Hall, Ms. DiDonato devotes her time to its education program including the Musical Connections project which allows her to work closely with Sing Sing inmates, mentoring them and performing music they have composed. As patron of El Sistema Greece, Ms. DiDonata has made numerous visits to refugee camps, working and performing with refugee children and proving that music really is the proverbial universal language. In opera, her recent roles include Agrippina at the Metropolitan Opera and in a new production at the Royal Opera House. Much in demand on the concert and recital circuit, Ms. DiDonato has held residencies at Carnegie Hall and at London’s Barbican Centre, and toured extensively in the U.S., South America, Europe and Asia. An exclusive recording artist with Erato/Warner Classics, her award-winning discography includes Les Troyens which in 2018 won the Recording category at the International Opera Awards and the Opera Award at the BBC Music Magazine Awards. Other honors include the Gramophone Artist of the Year and Recital of the Year awards, and an induction into the Gramophone Hall of Fame.
