A letter from the Middle East Studies Editor: Columbia University Press publishes crucial Middle East studies scholarship in the fields of history, anthropology, sociology, political science, philosophy, religion, and film. Except in philosophy and religion, we focus primarily on the modern era and explore both the underlying sources of conflict and the interplay of local and international interests and dynamics. We seek academically rigorous, well-written, relevant, and accessible books on the rapidly transforming Middle East. I am pleased to congratulate Wael Hallaq, author of The Impossible State: Islam, Politics, and Modernity’s Moral Predicament (2015) for having received the highly competitive Columbia University Press Distinguished Book Award. This the award’s inaugural year, and I hope to see more distinguished Middle East studies books from our list awarded this distinction. This year’s offerings include Irene L. Gendzier’s long-awaited Dying to Forget: Oil, Power, Palestine, and the Foundations of U.S. Policy in the Middle East and Stuart Schaar’s biography of Eqbal Ahmad, a major activist and thinker of the twentieth century whom Noam Chomsky describes as “a brilliant and penetrating critic and analyst, a courageous fighter for justice and freedom in much of the world.” Other notable books include, Women in the Mosque: A History of Legal Thought and Social Practice, by Marion Holmes Katz, which has been called “a scholarly milestone and a comprehensive, categorical treatment of the question of women’s mosque access in Islamic law and history,” and After the American Century: The Ends of U.S. Culture in the Middle East, by Brian T. Edwards. This book builds on a decade of fieldwork in Cairo, Casablanca, and Tehran and maps new routes of cultural exchange that are innovative, accelerated, and full of diversions. Our partnership with the Institute of Religion, Culture and Public Life at Columbia University and our series edited by Karen Barkey, director of the institute, has produced The Making of Salafism: Islamic Reform in the Twentieth Century, by Henri Lauzière. The book understands the movement as a recent conception of Islam projected back onto the past, and it sees its purist evolution as a direct result of decolonization. We are also proud to announce our new partnership with the Woodrow Wilson Center Press, extending our program in publishing outstanding scholarly and public-policy books for a worldwide readership, with Saeid Golkar’s Captive Society: The Basij Militia and Social Control in Iran. “This book fills a crucial gap in modern Islamic intellectual history: it untangles the now ubiquitous term “Salafism,” showing how the concept was invented, used, and contested through the twentieth century as both an analytical tool and a self-identifier. This conceptual history is paired with rich biographical material, which locates the shifting meanings of Salafism in the context of the wider historical processes of colonialism and independence.” — Ahmed El Shamsy, The University of Chicago Today, Salafis claim a monopoly on religious truth and freely confront other Muslims on theological and legal issues. Lauzière’s pathbreaking history recognizes the social forces behind this purist turn, uncovering the popular origins of what has become a global phenomenon. $55.00 / £38.00 cloth 978-0-231-17550-0 2015 328 pages Religion, Culture, and Public Life

Eqbal Ahmad
The Wheel
Critical Outsider in a Turbulent Age
Inventions and Reinventions
Stuart Schaar
Richard W. Bulliet
“Eqbal Ahmad was a brilliant and penetrating critic and analyst, a courageous fighter for justice and freedom in much of the world, steeped in humanistic understanding, warm and compassionate, a dear friend. His accomplishments ranged from demolishing self-serving dogmas about the Cold War to such constructive work as bringing Indians and Pakistanis together in a search for an amicable settlement of a tragic conflict, and far too much more even to try to mention. His life, achievements, and legacy are vividly portrayed by his close friend Stuart Schaar in this outstanding study, a fine tribute to one of the most remarkable people I’ve been fortunate enough to know, or even to know about.” — Noam Chomsky
“In this compact, learned, and richly illustrated book, Bulliet takes readers on a rollicking ride through 6,000 years of wheel history. Using textual, archaeological, linguistic, and artistic evidence, he floats bold new hypotheses, most notably that ancient Carpathian copper mining’s transport needs served as the mother of invention of the first the wheel. Ranging throughout Eurasia, Bulliet offers a fascinating story of inventions, diffusions, and rejections — a masterful technological history.” — J.R. EDITED AND INTRODUCED BY
NABIL MATAR
Conflict, Conquest, and Conversion Two Thousand Years of Christian Missions in the Middle East Eleanor H. Tejirian and Reeva Spector Simon “This work fills a substantial gap in the existing literature. It is encyclopedic in its range, keeping in view the missionary struggles between eastern and western Christianity — the Coptic, Roman, and Orthodox churches— as well as the divisions between the Protestant denominations. Eleanor H. Tejirian and Reeva Spector Simon’s history is conceived on a grand scale and draws together much of the recent enormous literature on the subject.” — Andrew Porter, King’s College London Eleanor H. Tejirian and Reeva Spector Simon delineate the ongoing tensions between conversion and the focus on witness and “good works” within the missionary movement, which contributed to the development and spread of nongovernmental organizations. $27.00 / £18.50 paper 978-0-231-13865-9 $80.00 / £55.00 cloth 978-0-231-13864-2 2012 296 pages
Henry Stubbe and the Beginnings of Islam The Originall & Progress of Mahometanism Edited by Nabil Matar “In meticulously researching and footnoting this extraordinary late-seventeenth-century text, Matar and Columbia University Press have rendered Islamic Studies, and the study of early English texts, a service of inestimable value.” — Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations “Stubbe’s manuscript treatise, which drew for the first time on Arabic and non-Christian sources in Latin translation, was revolutionary in its methodology and understanding of Islam. He presented the first historical biography of the Prophet and told the story of the spread of Islam, dispelling many untruths, such as conversion by the sword, while recognizing Muslim toleration for other religions. Nabil Matar’s work illuminates an important moment in the late seventeenth century.” — Donald R. Dickson, Texas A&M University $55.00 / £38.00 cloth 978-0-231-15664-6 2013 288 pages

[The author] supplies us with a multitude of data, sorted alphabetically and hence easily accessible, and dated, hence providing the information about the chronology of forms and meanings, perhaps the most essential kind of information in the Ottoman studies today....Phonetic and semantic attestations constitute the main body of the work. The Silent Qur’an and the Speaking Qur’an
Choreographies of Shared Sacred Sites
Scriptural Sources of Islam Between History and Fervor
Religion, Politics, and Conflict
Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi
Edited by Elazar Barkan and Karen Barkey
Translated by Eric Ormsby
“A stimulating and thought provoking study in the intellectual history of early Shi’ism and a treasure trove of information on early Shi’i exegesis, doctrine and jurisprudence. Professor Amir-Moezzi focuses on five leading Shi’i scholars of the 8th-10th centuries CE and offers an in-depth analysis of their work as highly significant sources for an alternative narrative of the historical developments over the first two centuries of Islam.” — Meir Bar-Asher, Hebrew University of Jerusalem Conducting a philological and historical study of little-known though significant ancient texts, Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi rebuilds a Shi’ite understanding of Islam’s early history and the genesis of its holy scriptures. At the same time, he proposes a fresh interpretative framework and a new data set for theorizing the early history of Islam, isolating the contradictions between Shi’ite and Sunni sources and their contribution to the tensions that rile these groups today.
Resolution “Understanding the complexity of shared sites is essential to grasping the ways in which multiple religions jointly inhabit this plural world. Choreographies of Shared Sacred Sites is a valuable and timely volume in a field critical to the present moment in history.” — Anna Bigelow, North Carolina State University “Sacred sites are ideally intimate possessions, inviolable and holy. Sharing them with other communities is like splitting an atom. This timely collection allows readers to examine the choreographies of theological politics and political theologies scripted in order to contain potential eruptions of violence. These highly readable case studies will fuel discussions of the post-Ottoman area for many years to come.” — Charles Stewart, University College London $50.00 / £34.50 cloth 978-0-231-16994-3 2014 440 pages / 14 illus. Shams C. Inati
“A highly scholarly work on an important but oft-ignored aspect of women in Islam.” — The Islamic Quarterly
"An important text by one of the leading writers on Islamic philosophy and the first English translation of high quality. It will be heavily used by those in the discipline." — Oliver Leaman, University of Kentucky "In providing a clear and accessible translation of difficult text with very useful annotations, Inati has made a major contribution to Avicenna’s studies and has put students of Islamic as well as Western medieval philosophy in her debt." — Seyyed Hossein Nasr, George Washington University $55.00 / £38.00 cloth 978-0-231-16616-4 2014 248 pages
A History of Legal Thought
“A scholarly milestone. Women in the Mosque is a comprehensive, categorical treatment of the question of women’s mosque access in Islamic law and history. Marion Holmes Katz is one of the most widely respected scholars of Islamic law and ritual in the West, and, in its scope and detail, this work is peerless to my knowledge.” — Jonathan Brown, Georgetown University “Essential [for] the library of every scholar concerned with Islamic ritual law, women in religion, women in Islam, and even religious architecture. There is something here for students of Islamic law, Ottoman history, Arab social history, and modern Muslim intellectual history.” — Kevin Reinhart, Dartmouth College $60.00 / £41.50 cloth 978-0-231-16266-1 2014 432 pages

How Foreign Interventions Destabilize the Middle East
A. Azfar Moin Best First Book in the History of Religions from the American Academy of Religion John F. Richards Prize in South Asian History, American Historical Association “Moin outlines a formidable challenge to the conventional narratives of Mughal and, to a lesser extent, Safavid history that is likely to surprise even specialists... A valuable contribution to the field that ought to compel scholars to reevaluate key assumptions regarding kingship and sainthood in Mughal India.” — International Journal of Middle East Studies Engagingly and fluently written, and unafraid of controversy, this book will be read and discussed by specialists of South Asian and Iranian history but also more broadly by those interested in early-modern comparisons within the Islamic world and beyond its boundaries.” — Sanjay Subrahmanyam, University of California, Los Angeles
Sean L. Yom “Comparative historical analysis at its best. Yom elegantly distills complex dynamics into three causal pathways that show how, from the same initial condition of social conflict during early state-building, varying degrees of external intervention affected autocratic leaders’ building of narrow or broad coalitions, with lasting consequences for regime durability. Scholars will learn from his insight about the coalitional origins of institutions, while policy-makers should heed his conclusions about the counter-productivity of meddling to prop up dictators.” — Wendy Pearlman, Northwestern University, author of Violence, Nonviolence, and the Palestinian National Movement $55.00/ £38.00 cloth 978-0-231-17564-7 2015 312 pages / 10 illus. ISLAMIC POLITICS & LAW Voices of the ArAb spring Personal Stories from the Arab Revolutions ASAAd Al-SAleh
The Impossible State
Voices of the Arab Spring
Islam, Politics, and Modernity’s Moral Predicament
Personal Stories from the Arab Revolutions
Wael B. Hallaq
Asaad al-Saleh
Winner of the Columbia University Press Distinguished Book Award “This book brings a detailed and impassioned exploration of key debates in Islamic law and governance into sustained conversation with canonical texts in Western political and legal theory.” — Perspectives on Politics “A bracing, erudite, and compelling account of the moral, political, and structural features of Islamic governance and the modern state, as well as of the multiple incongruities that hamper any attempt to establish one in terms of the other. Wael Hallaq delivers a welcome rejoinder to much of the dogmatic bluster swirling around the subject of shari’a and the Islamic state. At the same time, he brings into sharp focus the often overlooked resources for reconceptualizing ‘the modern project’ from within both Islamic and Euro-American traditions of moral and political thought. The historical, theoretical, and political richness of this account makes The Impossible State a new standard against which any claims about the possibility of establishing Islamic governance in the contemporary world must now be evaluated.” — Roxanne L. Euben, Wellesley College
“Humane and sensitive storytelling.” — New Statesman “There’s a wonderful cumulative power to reading the personal narratives. They’re gripping, extremely poignant, often heartbreaking, and astonishing. It’s long overdue to finally have unmediated access to “regular” citizens’ experiences and recollections.” —Mona El-Ghobashy, Barnard College Featuring participants from a variety of social and educational backgrounds and political commitments, these personal stories of action represent the Arab Spring’s united and broad social movements, collective identities, and youthful character. For years, the volume’s participants lived under regimes that brutally suppressed free expression and protest. Their testimony speaks to the multifaceted emotional, psychological, and cultural factors that motivated citizens to join together to struggle against their oppressors. $22.95 / £15.95 paper 978-0-231-16319-4 $65.00 / £45.00 cloth 978-0-231-16318-7 2015 272 pages

The Arab Uprisings Explained
Sectarian Politics in the Gulf
New Contentious Politics in the Middle East
From the Iraq War to the Arab Uprisings
Edited by Marc Lynch “Offering a comparative overview of key structural issues such as the role of the military and the independence of the private sector.... [The Arab Uprisings Explained] provides the most useful basis for understanding the differences in post-uprising trajectories and the factors that have limited opportunities for democratic change.” — International Affairs “This extremely useful and timely book directs the reader toward thematic and topical arguments that provide a broader understanding of the Arab uprisings. Expected topics such as diffusion, media, the military, and elections are joined by analyses of less examined themes like labor, political space, and banking systems. The treatments are sophisticated yet accessible. An excellent contribution to the most important questions facing scholars of Middle East politics.” — F. Gregory Gause, III, author of The International Relations of the Persian Gulf
Frederic M. Wehrey “One of FP’s Best Books on the Middle East for 2013...Wehrey’s new book offers a theoretically sophisticated and empirically rich overview of the politics of Sunni-Shiite relations across the Gulf. His extensive research on the ground across the Gulf comes through powerfully, as does his balanced analytical sensibility.” — Foreign Policy “A must read that offers a fresh and innovative contribution to the literature in international relations and comparative government. It is extremely well written and laid out. The book belongs on the syllabus of any class dealing with Gulf security and on the desk of policy planners and decision makers around the world.” — International Journal of Middle East Studies $55.00/ £38.00 cloth 978-0-231-16512-9 2013 352 pages Columbia Studies in Middle East Politics

Parting Ways
After the American Century
Jewishness and the Critique of Zionism
The Ends of U.S. Culture in the Middle East
Judith Butler “Following in the footsteps of Hannah Arendt, Judith Butler offers an illuminating critique of Zionism, here developed into a general theory of “cohabitation.” Her compelling juxtaposition of Jewish and Palestinian intellectuals and texts (Levinas, Benjamin, Arendt, Said, and Darwish) constitutes an essential reflection on the notion of exile and diaspora, thus positioning herself against the logic of the nation state. Even those who disagree with some of her basic assumptions will find Parting Ways illuminating, challenging and thought provoking.” — Amnon Raz-Krakotzkin, Ben Gurion University $19.95 / £13.95 paper 978-0-231-14611-1 $27.95 / £19.50 cloth 978-0-231-14610-4 2012 256 pages
Brian T. Edwards “This book is a rich account of what happens when cultural objects, literary texts, and films circulate between the Middle East and the United States: how they are interpreted and reinvented, in the process engendering new publics and counterpublics. A nuanced analysis of cultural politics that extends our understanding of the forms and limits of Western domination of the Middle East.” — Saba Mahmood, author of Politics of Piety: The Islamic Revival and the Feminist Subject “After the American Century offers a fascinating tour of the appropriation and deployment of American popular culture in a globalized, restless Middle East. From cinema and novels to hip-hop and comic books, this wonderfully written and richly observed book presents novel and exciting readings of familiar cultural forms in new political environments.” — Marc Lynch, author of The Arab Uprising: The Unfinished Revolutions of the New Middle East $35.00 / £24.00 cloth 978-0-231-17400-8 2015 288 pages / 21 illus.

An Introduction and Case Studies
Ethical Space in the Work of Assia Djebar and Hélène Cixous
Rebecca T. Alpert “In Religion and Sports, Rebecca T. Alpert offers a series of expertly crafted case studies with innovative, provocative, and compelling suggested exercises for classroom use. The case studies are superb in their content and accessibility and cover a wide range of sports from across the globe, raising important questions related to race, gender, ethnicity, creed, pluralism, and moral complexity.” — Arthur Remillard, Saint Francis University Rebecca Alpert explores the place of sports in mainstream faiths, such as Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity, and lesser-known religious groups, particularly in Africa. She covers football, baseball, and basketball but also archery, soccer, bullfighting, judo, and track. Essays reflect all skill levels, from amateur to professional, and find surprising affinities among practices and cultures in locations as disparate as Germany and Japan, Spain and Saudi Arabia. Thoroughly examining a range of phenomena, this collection fully captures the unique overlap of two universal institutions and their interplay with human society, politics, and culture.
Brigitte Weltman-Aron “This book is the first to unravel the complex relationships that Cixous and Djebar have developed between body and language, writing and gender, and, above all, the connections between literary theory and the history of postcolonial relations between Algeria and France.” — Réda Bensmaïa, Brown University “Compellingly argued, Algerian Imprints brings together in novel ways two leading francophone writers, Hélène Cixous and Assia Djebar. Working at the intersection of literature, history, and theory, Brigitte Weltman-Aron shows convincingly how these women write from their marginal positions to create a politics of dissensus.” — Verena Conley, Harvard University $55.00 / £38.00 cloth 978-0-231-17256-1 2015 232 pages

Pierre Bourdieu
A Critique of Christianity
Foreword by Craig Calhoun
“Essential reading for those who are interested in the link between colonial politics and ethnographic practices.” — Arab Studies Journal “A seminal work that is strongly recommended reading.” — The Midwest Book Review This volume pairs 130 of Bourdieu’s photographs with key excerpts from his related writings, very few of which have been translated into English. Many of these images, luminous aesthetic objects in their own right, comment eloquently on the accompanying words even as they are commented upon by them. Bourdieu’s work set the standard for all subsequent ethnographic photography and critique. $28.00 / £19.50 paper 978-0-231-14843-6 $75.00/ £52.00 cloth 978-0-231-14842-9 2014 248 pages / 170 illus. Gil Anidjar “A project of soaring ambition and incredible scope, Gil Anidjar attempts to weave a narrative constructed from— and soaked in— the cultural, social, political history of blood within Christianity and, by extension, the entire Western world.” — Oxonian Review “Gil Anidjar’s Blood is a consuming book — a fierce intelligence combined with compelling readings of everything and anything related to the mechanics of circulation, the rhythmic splattered arcs, the media and metaphysics, the diseases born within and carried by the blood.” — Syndicate - John Modern Blood, according to Gil Anidjar, maps the singular history of Christianity. As a category for historical analysis, blood can be seen through its literal and metaphorical uses as determining, sometimes even defining Western culture, politics, and social practices and their wide-ranging incarnations in nationalism, capitalism, and law. $50.00 / £34.50 cloth 978-0-231-16720-8 2014 464 pages Religion, Culture, and Public Life

"Drawing on his own recollections as well as documents that offer an official chronicle and letters and journals that pour out personal desires, Guénoun explores the complications of family and identity." — Booklist René Guénoun called himself a Semite, a word that he felt united Jewish and Arab worlds and best reflected a shared origin. He also believed that Algerians had the same political rights as Frenchmen. Although his Jewish family was rooted in Algeria, he inherited French citizenship and revered the principles of the French Revolution. His steadfast belief in liberty, equality, and fraternity led him into trouble, including prison and exile, yet his failures as an activist never shook his faith in a rational, generous future. $35.00 / £24.00 cloth 978-0-231-16402-3 2014 176 pages / 2 illus.

Urban Enclosures and Resistances
Maruta Herding
Edited by Derya Özkan
Young Muslims have begun to develop a subculture within Europe’s growing Muslim population, its manifestations ranging from the proliferation of religious rap and streetwear featuring Islamic slogans to morally impeccable comedy. These forms of religiously permissible fun and youthcompatible worship are actively shaping the future of Islam in Europe and the character of Muslim and non-Muslims relations. Based on a vast selection of youth cultural artifacts, participant observations, and indepth interviews in France, Britain, and Germany, this book vividly captures the Islamic youth culture of today and the factors driving its particular development.
This volume investigates the “cool city” phenomenon with an empirical focus on Istanbul. It approaches “cool Istanbul” not only as a consumable brand but also as a socially produced and politically performed phenomenon. The essays in the volume draw attention to the significance of thinking production, consumption, and performance of cities in relation to their imagination and trigger critical questions beyond disciplinary academic boundaries. $45.00 paper 978-3-8376-2763-3 2015 464 pages Transcript-Verlag

Dying to Forget Oil, Power, Palestine, and the Foundations of U.S. Policy in the Middle East Irene L. Gendzier “A Middle East scholar uncovers the postWorld War II history of American policy in Palestine. From the beginning, it’s been about oil.... compiling an almost bulletproof brief. Vital reading for those looking to understand, 65 years later, the origins of the continuing conflict in the Middle East.” — Kirkus Reviews
Jagellionian University Press
“Gendzier provides a most valuable reinterpretation of the roots of U.S. policy towards Israel and the Palestinians. In particular, she shows convincingly that the crucial choice for planners was not ‘oil versus Israel,’ as commonly believed, but rather ‘oil and Israel,’ and demonstrates no less convincingly that the secrets of the past that she uncovers are intimately connected with ‘the troubled present.’ A very significant contribution.” — Noam Chomsky, Massachusetts Institute of Technology $40.00 / £27.50 cloth 978-0-231-15288-4 2015 432 pages

Schools for Conflict or for Peace in Afghanistan Dana Burde Winner of the 2015 W. Gabriel Carras Research Award from NYU “Public education in conflict-ridden societies should be a force for peace and stability, if done well. But Dana Burde shows that international aid to education in Afghanistan sowed conflict when its political goals prioritized jihad against the Soviet occupation or favored some ethnic groups over others. Impeccably researched, this study has global implications for thinking about politics, education policy, and foreign aid.” — Jack Snyder, Columbia University $40.00 / £27.50 cloth 978-0-231-16928-8 2014 232 pages / 6 illus.
Starve and Immolate The Politics of Human Weapons Banu Bargu Winner of the Best First Book Prize, the Foundations of Political Theory Section of the American Political Science Association “Bargu frames a political ethnography of hunger strikes in Turkish prisions with debates about Foucault’s critique of biopolitical power... Elegently written and argued, this text is a compelling empirical and theoretical contribution.” — Choice "This extraordinary book movingly and effectively describes and analyzes the history of the death fast movement in the early years of the twenty-first century in Turkey. It is a treasure trove of material, both empirical and theoretical, making it at once a wonderful (though grim) account and a thoughtful reflection on what prisons do and how they do it, as well as what forms of resistance are effective or even possible when and where." — Laleh Khalili, SOAS, University of London, author of Time in the Shadows: Confinement in Counterinsurgencies $65.00 / £45.00 cloth 978-0-231-16340-8 2014 512 pages New Directions in Critical Theory

Shifting Sands The United States in the Middle East
Derailing Democracy in Afghanistan
Joel S. Migdal
Elections in an Unstable Political Landscape
“Exquisitely timely .... [A] benchmark study.” — Israel Studies Review
Noah Coburn and Anna Larson
“A compelling narrative of American policy in the Middle East since World War II. Joel Migdal dissects America’s static strategic model in a region that has undergone four periods of profound change....Eschewing visions of grand change, Migdal suggests the temperate yet more effective approach of building alliances and fostering gradual change. This is a book to be read by policy makers and students of the Middle East alike.” — Daniel Kurtzer, Princeton University, former U.S. ambassador to Egypt and Israel
"A fascinating look into how Afghan politics trump Western political theory, Derailing Democracy in Afghanistan is readable yet filled with insight. The book is a serious critique of international democracy practice and funding that needs attention well beyond those interested in Afghanistan. It highlights the consequences of letting donor expediency sideline cultural understanding, including the multifaceted role of violence.” — Ronald Neumann, United States Ambassador to Afghanistan, 2005–2007 $60.00 / £41.50 cloth 978-0-231-16620-1 2013 304 pages / 10 illus.

ISRAEL & PALESTINE Forthcoming April
Jerusalem Unbound
Palestinians in Syria Nakba Memories of Shattered Communities Anaheed Al-Hardan One hundred thousand Palestinians fled to Syria after being expelled from Palestine upon the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. Integrating into society over time, their experience stands in stark contrast to the plight of Palestinian refugees in other Arab countries. Syria’s Palestinians as a result held a different conception of the 1948 Nakba, or catastrophe, in popular memory. Based on interviews with first-, second-, and third-generation members of Syria’s Palestinian community, this book challenges the nationalist and patriotic idea of the Nakba’s memory as static and universally shared. Following the evolution of the Nakba in Syria and its transformation in the country’s Palestinian politics, this study sheds light on the enduring relevance of the Nakba among the communities it helped create, as well as its changing meaning in light of the Syrian war.
Geography, History, and the Future of the Holy City Michael Dumper “A clearly organized, meticulously researched, highly readable guide to Jerusalem’s complex social and political landscape.” — Washington Report on Middle East Affairs “An original look at a city in flux amidst impasse. Jerusalem Unbound presents a new argument about how to think about this contentious city, asserting that its fluid, ‘manybordered’ nature constrains the unilateral imposition of political power and opens up new alternatives for political compromise.” — Scott A. Bollens, author of City and Soul in Divided Societies $35.00 / £24.00 cloth 978-0-231-16196-1 2014 360 pages / 37 illus.

The Emergence of Iranian Nationalism

Reza Zia-Ebrahimi
Edited by Anna Krasnowolska and
“This book breaks new ground in the study of recent Iranian history. It reveals and analyzes the dirty little secret of Iranian nationalism, namely that it contains a racist dimension. It is not only a well-researched and well-written book, it is also a courageous book.” — Houchang Chehabi, Boston University Reza Zia-Ebrahimi revisits the work of Fath’ali Akhundzadeh and Mirza Aqa Khan Kermani, two Qajar-era intellectuals who founded modern Iranian nationalism. In their efforts to make sense of a difficult historical situation, these thinkers advanced an appealing ideology Zia-Ebrahimi calls “dislocative nationalism,” in which pre-Islamic Iran is cast as a golden age, Islam is radicalized as an alien religion, and Arabs become implacable others. Dislodging Iran from its empirical reality and tying it to Europe and the Aryan race, this ideology remains the most sophisticated and politically potent form of identity in Iran. $60.00 / £41.50 cloth 978-0-231-17576-0 March 2016 320 pages

Renata Rusek-Kowalska Today, the Iranian world, which encompasses the whole Persian-speaking and culturally “Persianate”region, including Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Tajikistan, parts of Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, is a geopolitically sensitive region. But it is also a distinct cultural area with a rich and complex history, a mosaic of ethnic and religious groups, ancient languages and dialects, and sophisticated literatures. The essays in this volume address a broad range of questions from a variety of fields, including languages, literature, religions, history, anthropology, demography, sociology, medicine, art, and film. Anticipating a Nuclear Iran Challenges for U.S. Security
Islam and the Politics of Culture in Europe
Jacquelyn K. Davis and Robert L.
Memory, Aesthetics, Art
Pfaltzgraff Jr.
Edited by Frank Peter, Sarah Dornhof,
“Must reading for the policy maker, the policy analyst, and the broader public policy community. The authors break new ground in their multifaceted discussion of Iran’s nuclear program and its implications for deterrence dynamics in the complex twentyfirst-century world. A brilliant work of policy scholarship.” — James Stavridis, U.S. Navy (Ret.), and dean, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University “The originality of Jacquelyn K. Davis and Robert L. Pfaltzgraff Jr.’s book lies in its creative synthesis of historical, logical, and technology and force-structure trends into a coherent assessment of what a nuclear Iran means for the region and the world. They explain U.S. policy implications of an Iran with atomic weapons in a clear, insightful way.” — Paul Bracken, Yale University $50.00 / £34.50 cloth 978-0-231-16622-5 2013 240 pages /
and Elena Arigita Debates surrounding the “new presence of Muslims” in Europe tend to be understood in terms of European values, multicultural policies and secularism. The conflict-ridden transformation of European identities set in motion by this phenomenon is currently discussed with reference to normative orders, historical legacies, public philosophies, and political ideologies. This volume extends the analysis by examining transformations in European cultural politics. In the past decade, multiple images of Islam and Muslims have become part of the processes shaping the cultural particularities and sensibilities that define European identities. This volume examines these developments in the fields of memory politics, cultural production, and Islamic art. $45.00 paper 978-3-8376-2176-1 2014 280 pages / 35 illus Transcript-Verlag

ISLAM BEYOND THE MIDDLE EAST Debating Islam Negotiating Religion, Europe, and the Self Edited by Samuel M. Behloul, Susanne Leuenberger, and Andreas Tunger-Zanetti
Islam Through Western Eyes From the Crusades to the War on Terrorism Jonathan Lyons
Islam has become a key issue in most European societies with respect to issues of immigration, integration, identity, values and inland security. Introducing Switzerland as an under-researched object of study to the academic discourse on Islam in Europe, this volume offers a fresh perspective on the objective by putting recent case studies from diverse national contexts into comparative perspective.
Choice Outstanding Academic Title “Islam Through Western Eyes is as timely as it is informative, helping us understand the history of understanding—and misunderstanding—between Muslims and non-Muslims over the centuries, patterns that continue today. This is a book that should be read by people of all faiths, not only for edification but also for healing in a religiously fractured world." — Mark Juergensmeyer, author of Global Rebellion: Religious Challenges to the Secular State, from Christian Militias to al Qaeda

Bruce Hoffman, Fernando Reinares, and the volume’s other noted experts provide detailed analyses of al-Qaeda-linked plots around the world, making a compelling case that the al-Qaeda core remains an active terrorism threat to governments everywhere.” — Daniel Byman, Georgetown University, and senior fellow, Brookings Institution

The Elements of Academic Style Writing for the Humanities Eric Hayot "The Elements of Academic Style is an utter tour de force, a guide to scholarly writing in the humanities that manages to be at once lively, funny, absorbing, rigorous, and immensely insightful. It offers a wealth of advice from the minute and grammatical to the disciplinary and career-changing, even as it probes deeply into the humanities as they are actually practiced, in the nitty gritty of our writing. Intended for graduate students, who will benefit in untold ways from its wisdom, it is a boon for faculty as well, so acute are its observations and so intelligent its maxims." — Sarah Cole, Columbia University $20.00 / £14.00 paper 978-0-231-16801-4 $60.00 / £41.50 cloth 978-0-231-16800-7 2014 256 pages / 9 illus.
Who’s Afraid of Academic Freedom? Edited by Akeel Bilgrami and Jonathan R. Cole "This impressive collection of 17 essays, with its broad range of social, scientific, legal and philosophical analyses, will be vitally important to democratic and political dialogue.” — Times Higher Education “Is academic freedom a subset of the freedom of speech, and if not, what is it? Who sets the rules for freedom of this or any kind? Who changes the rules when they don’t seem to be working? And what does ‘working’ mean in this context? There are no easy answers in this book, but there are ideas and counter-ideas in abundance, and it handsomely illustrates and defends (and shows it is not afraid of) the value it names in its title.” — Michael Wood, author of Literature and the Taste of Knowledge and Yeats and Violence $35.00 / £24.00 cloth 978-0-231-16880-9 2015 448 pages
