A Letter from the Religion Editor: It is with great pleasure that I present the Columbia University Press religion catalog for 2016. These titles, which span subjects from philosophy of religion to South and East Asian religions, American religions, and political theology, reflect the interdisciplinary and global approach of our list and exemplify the innovative and field-changing scholarship that we value. Among the many outstanding titles in this year’s wide-ranging catalog several deserve special attention. Sacred Knowledge: Psychedelics and Religious Experience, by William A. Richards, one of the first and most prominent researchers in the field, argues passionately and with great insight that psychedelics have incredible potential to assuage human suffering, encourage spiritual awakening, and constructively contribute to the quality of life on our planet. I am very proud of this book, and many of our readers will remember his dramatic presentation at the 2013 AAR meeting. I’m equally delighted to publish the first of several books by existential anthropologist Michael Jackson, Harmattan: A Philosophical Fiction, a radical and unsettling exploration of boundary experiences through ethnography, memoir, and fiction. Reimagining the Sacred puts noted philosopher of religion Richard Kearney in dialogue with some of the most prominent thinkers of our time, including Julia Kristeva, Catherine Keller, and Charles Taylor. Other compelling authors and projects include Mormonism and American Politics, edited by Randall Balmer and Jana Riess, the first book to evaluate the political role of the LDS Church in broad historical perspective; Pope Francis Among the Wolves: The Inside Story of a Revolution, by Marco Politi, one of the foremost Vatican experts in the world; and Who Made Early Christianity? The Jewish Lives of the Apostle Paul, by John G. Gager, the first title to appear in the newly resurrected AAR series, American Lectures in the History of Religions. I am sure that you will find much to enjoy and ponder in these pages. I, and my colleagues at Columbia University Press, look forward to continuing our dialogue. Reimagining the Sacred
A Hedonist Manifesto
Richard Kearney Debates God with James Wood, Catherine Keller, Charles Taylor, Julia Kristeva, Gianni Vattimo, Simon Critchley, Jean-Luc Marion, John Caputo, David Tracey, Jens Zimmermann, and Merold Westphal
The Power to Exist
Edited by Richard Kearney and Jens Zimmermann "This book serves both as a lucid introduction to contemporary Continental philosophy of religion and a guide through the complexity of the contested terrain between theists, atheists, and those who search for a credible way to articulate the sacred in everyday life." — Dermot Moran, University College Dublin These conversations locate the sacred within secular society and affirm a positive role for religion in human reflection and action. Kearney's work facilitates a fresh encounter with our best-known voices in continental philosophy and their views on issues of importance to all spiritually minded individuals and skeptics: how to reconcile God's goodness with human evil, how to believe in both God and natural science, how to talk about God without indulging in fundamentalist rhetoric, and how to balance God's sovereignty with God's love. $30.00 / £20.00 paper 978-0-231-16103-9 $90.00 / £62.00 cloth 978-0-231-16102-2 2015 288 pages
Michel Onfray Translated by Joseph McClellan
"A Hedonist Manifesto is a finely wrought and far-sweeping book by an author who has established himself as a voice of wit and acuity in contemporary debates surrounding atheism and the revival of a general Epicurean/Lucretian sensibility." — Rocco Gangle, Endicott College
Michael Onfray passionately defends the potential of hedonism to resolve the dislocations and disconnections of our melancholy age. In a sweeping survey of history's engagement with and rejection of the body, he exposes the sterile conventions that prevent us from realizing a more immediate, ethical, and embodied life. He then lays the groundwork for both a radical and constructive politics of the body that adds to debates over morality, equality, sexual relations, and social engagement, demonstrating how philosophy, and not just modern scientism, can contribute to a humanistic ethics. $35.00 / £24.00 cloth 978-0-231-17126-7 2015 232 pages Insurrections: Critical Studies in Religion, Politics, and Culture

Love and Forgiveness for a More Just World Edited by Hent de Vries and Nils F. Schott "Engaging scholars in a debate that is situated on the cutting edge of critical theory and contemporary philosophy, Hent de Vries and Nils F. Schott have succeeded beautifully in shifting perspective toward a more totalizing philosophy in conversation with ethics, religion, theology, and literature." —Willemien Otten, University of Chicago "This timely and highly stimulating set of essays examines the theological, historical, literary, dramatic, political, and theological resources of love and forgiveness in the world today. The authors find love and forgiveness to be centrally related to questions of justice and recognition, to the alert and attentive desire to see the world and each other aright. I highly recommend this bracing and thought-provoking book." —Sarah Beckwith, Duke University
The Sensual God How the Senses Make the Almighty Senseless Aviad M. Kleinberg "Aviad Kleinberg writes with ease and at times delightful humor, all the while expertly navigating between various ancient and modern texts, and substantiating his arguments with biblical examples. The Sensual God is a work of impressive erudition and a brilliant contribution to understanding the cultural givens that define how we understand 'God,' contradictions and all." — Françoise Meltzer, University of Chicago Focusing on examples from both Christian and Jewish sources, from the Bible to sources from the Late Middle Ages, Aviad Kleinberg examines the way Christian and Jewish philosophers, exegetes, and theologians attempted to reconcile God's supposed ineffability with numerous biblical and postbiblical accounts of seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, and even tasting the almighty.

Christo-Fiction
Blood
The Ruins of Athens and Jerusalem
A Critique of Christianity
François Laruelle
Gil Anidjar
Translated by Robin Mackay
"It is no exaggeration to say that the contribution of François Laruelle's entire opus and of Christo-Fiction in particular will be historic. The importance of this latest work stems not only from the momentum of the emergence of a 'Laruellian epoch' in philosophy but also from the fact that this is the first work where he reconciles the two great phases in his thought—the 'scientific' one and the one of 'nonstandard theology.'" — Katerina Kolozova, Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities-Skopje Explicitly inserting quantum science into religion, Laruelle recasts the temporality of the cross, the entombment, and the resurrection, arguing that it is God who is sacrificed on the cross so equals in faith may be born. Positioning itself against orthodox religion and naive atheism alike, Christo-Fiction is a daring, heretical experiment that ties religion to the human experience and the lived world. $35.00 / £24.00 cloth 978-0-231-16724-6

“A project of soaring ambition and incredible scope, Gil Anidjar attempts to weave a narrative constructed from — and soaked in — the cultural, social, political history of blood within Christianity and, by extension, the entire Western world.” — Oxonian Review “Gil Anidjar’s Blood is a consuming book — a fierce intelligence combined with compelling readings of everything and anything related to the mechanics of circulation, the rhythmic splattered arcs, the media and metaphysics, the diseases born within and carried by the blood.” — Syndicate - John Modern Blood, according to Gil Anidjar, maps the singular history of Christianity. As a category for historical analysis, blood can be seen through its literal and metaphorical uses as determining, sometimes even defining Western culture, politics, and social practices and their wide-ranging incarnations in nationalism, capitalism, and law.

RELIGION & PHILOSOPHY
Kant and the Meaning of Religion
Rawls and Religion
Terry F. Godlove
Edited by Tom Bailey and Valentina Gentile
"Brilliant and compelling… This book can only be called a stunning accomplishment. One could not ask for a more rich or rewarding study, the mature reflections of a seasoned scholar who is also a philosopher… Do not miss it." — Journal of the American Academy of Religion Terry F. Godlove discovers in Immanuel Kant's theoretical philosophy resources that have much wider implications beyond Christianity and the philosophical issues that concern monotheism and its beliefs. For Godlove, Kant’s insights, when properly applied, can help rejuvenate our understanding of the general study of religion and its challenges. He therefore bypasses what is usually considered to be the “Kantian philosophy of religion” and instead focuses on more fundamental issues, such as Kant's account of concepts, experience, and reason and their significance in controversial matters.
"For those interested in religion and its role in political philosophy, this is a must read.... Highly recommended." — Choice In this anthology, established scholars of Rawls and the philosophy of religion reexamine and rearticulate the central tenets of Rawls's theory to show they in fact offer sophisticated resources for accommodating and responding to religions in liberal political life. The chapters reassert the subtlety, openness, and flexibility of his sense of liberal "respect" and "consensus," revealing their inclusive implications for religious citizens. They also explore the means he proposes for accommodating nonliberal religions in liberal politics, developing his conception of "public reason" into a novel account of the possibilities for rational engagement between liberal and religious ideas. $30.00 / £20.50 paper 978-0-231-16799-4 $90.00 / £62.00 cloth 978-0-231-16798-7 2014 328 pages

POLITICAL THEOLOGY
Nietzsche Versus Paul
Paul's Summons to Messianic Life
Abed Azzam
Political Theology and the Coming Awakening
"Written in a precise and economical style, crystallizing its points with aphoristic clarity, Nietzsche Versus Paul reconstructs a series of "Christian" moments found throughout the Nietzschean corpus and so reveals a surprisingly consistent, sophisticated, and cunning structure. This contribution goes far beyond the circles of Nietzsche scholarship, where it will certainly be received as a fresh and powerful intervention. Indeed, it is an original conceptualization of atheism, nihilism, secularization, and modernity as well, and will be warmly received by scholars of philosophy and religion, especially, those interested in their intersection."
L. L. Welborn "A courageous and welcome grappling with contemporary philosophers by a New Testament scholar who has expertise in the history, languages, and methodologies of reading Paul. Paul's Summons to Messianic Life reminds us of the relevance of New Testament scholarship to important contemporary debates on universalism, time, and even political action." — Laura Nasrallah, Harvard Divinity School

Welborn compares the Pauline dialectic of awakening to attempts by Hellenistic philosophers to rouse their contemporaries from moral lethargy and to the Marxist idea of class consciousness, emphasizing the apostle's radical spirit and moral relevance.

POLITICAL THEOLOGY Forthcoming April
Force of God
An Insurrectionist Manifesto
Political Theology and the Crisis of Liberal Democracy
Ward Blanton, Clayton Crockett, Jeffrey W.
Carl A. Raschke "Carl Raschke's contribution to political theology offers a sustained and profound genealogy of the conceptual forces that constitute our era. Based on extensive scholarship that discloses obscured insights from the tradition of radical Continental philosophy, he illuminates and challenges the forces of religion, economy, and politics in our time. This is a deep theoretical treatise on our present and future troubles." — Philip Goodchild, University of Nottingham Worsening debt, rising unemployment, and gross income inequality have led to a crisis in political representation and values that twentieth-century theorists never anticipated. Raschke recasts political theology for a new generation. He proposes a bold, uncompromising critical theory that acknowledges the enduring significance of Marx without his materialism and builds a vital, more spiritually grounded relationship between politics and the religious imaginary.
Four New Gospels for a Radical Politics Robbins, and Noëlle Vahanian
Foreword by Peter Rollin, Preface by Creston Davis, and Afterword by Catherine Keller.
"The ideas conveyed in An Insurrectionist Manifesto are a powerful provocation, in the best sense of the word. We are forced to ask important questions: about the normativity of this or that Christian position, about nature and the universe, about cruelty and violence, about God and the possibilities ‘after’ God. These uniformly first-rate essays engage with the work of some of the most important philosophers working today in a head-on and consistently illuminating way. There is no other book like this currently available, because no one else has sought to develop the concept of an insurrectionary theology." — Kenneth Surin, Duke University $30.00 / £20.00 paper 978-0-231-17623-1 $90.00 / £62.00 cloth 978-0-231-17622-4 April 2016 216 pages Insurrections: Critical Studies in Religion, Politics, and Culture

Deathpower Buddhism's Ritual Imagination in Cambodia Erik W. Davis "Erik Davis' beautifully written and provocative examination of 'deathpower' — the ritual power that allows the living to care for and transform the dead — is not only a significant addition to literature on Buddhist funerary practices, it is also the most perceptive, meticulous, informative, and important study of contemporary Cambodian Buddhism to date. Davis' book will be a classic: for its fascinating theoretical treatment of the religious imaginary in Cambodia, one that binds together what Cambodians often distinguish as "Buddhism" and "Brahmanism," and on a larger human scale, for its humane consideration of death and all it involves." — Anne Hansen, University of WisconsinMadison
Spreading Buddha's Word in East Asia The Formation and Transformation of the Chinese Buddhist Canon Edited by Jiang Wu and Lucille Chia "The Sinitic Buddhist canons rank among the largest bodies of sacred literature ever produced by any religious tradition. The compilation, editing, and publication of these massive collections required a commitment of money and manpower that was the medieval equivalent of the moon landings of the 1960s. This ground-breaking volume gives these canons the sustained attention they have long deserved from the scholarly community and will help to demonstrate that they are among the preeminent cultural achievements of the wider Sinitic world." — Robert E. Striking Beauty
Families of Virtue
A Philosophical Look at the Asian Martial Arts
Confucian and Western Views on Childhood Development
Barry Allen
Erin M. Cline
"Striking Beauty presents a beautifully and forcefully written account of the philosophical background of martial arts in Eastern and Western traditions. At the same time, it also presents the author's vision of a contemporary philosophy, and phenomenology, of the martial arts and their aesthetic, somatic, and ethical dimensions. It is a ground-breaking and inspiring book."
"An impressive example of a successful multidisciplinary work, in which Cline skillfully combines Chinese thought, the history of Western philosophy, empirical developmental psychology, and public policy proposals. This is clearly a work that will make a significant contribution to multiple fields."
—Hans-Georg Möeller, University of Macau
Early Confucian philosophers argue that the general ethical sensibilities we develop during infancy and early childhood form the basis for nearly every virtue and that the parent-child relationship is the primary context within which this growth occurs. Joining these views with scientific work on early childhood, Families of Virtue shows how Western psychology can reinforce and renew the theoretical underpinnings of Confucian thought and how Confucian philosophers can affect positive social and political change in our time, particularly in such areas as paid parental leave, breastfeeding initiatives, marriage counseling, and family therapy.
Striking Beauty explains the relationship between Asian martial arts and the Chinese philosophical traditions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, in addition to Sunzi's Art of War. It connects martial arts practice to the Western concepts of mindbody dualism and materialism, sports aesthetics, and the ethics of violence. $30.00 / £20.50 cloth 978-0-231-17272-1 2015 272 pages

The Empress and the Heavenly Masters

A Study of the Ordination Scroll of Empress Zhang (1493)
Essays on Anglican and Episcopal History in China
Luk Yu-ping
Philip L. Wickeri
Over twenty-seven meters long, the Ordination Scroll of Empress Zhang (1493) is an important Ming Dynasty Daoist artifact from the San Diego Museum of Art's collection. It is a record of the imperial ordination of Empress Zhang, consort of the Ming Dynasty Hongzhi emperor by Zhang Xuanqing (d. 1509), the forty-seventh Heavenly Master of the Zhengyi institution. This book builds a history of imperial ordinations through a detailed examination of the scroll's transcriptions and meticulously painted images of celestial beings, and it examines the influences of the Daoist leaders known as the Zhengyi Heavenly Masters.
“This is one of the finest books on Christianity and Chinese culture to have emerged in recent years. Philip Wickeri has done the almost-impossible, and assembled an outstanding, world-class team of scholars to write on Anglican and Episcopal history in China, with essays focusing on education, liturgy, ministry, ecclesiology and theology. This is a timely, important book— and one that will re-shape the way we understand the place of Anglican and Episcopal churches in the past, present and future." — Martyn Percy, dean of Christ Church, Oxford, UK $60.00 / £41.50 cloth 978-9888-20-838-8

AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF BUDDHIST STUDIES (AIBS) In Vimalakirti's House A Festschrift in Honor of Robert A. F. Thurman on the Occasion of his 70th Birthday
Tsong Khapa's Illumination of the Hidden Meaning: Mandala, Mantra, and the Cult of the Yognis
Edited by Christian K. Wedemeyer, John D.
A Study and Annotated Translation of Chapters 1-24 of the sbas don kun sel
Dunne, and Thomas F. Yarnall
David B. Gray
Over the course of nearly half a century, Robert A. F. Thurman has left an indelible mark on numerous fields of study, including Buddhist literature, Tantric Buddhism, Tibetan Studies, and the comparative sciences of mind. To celebrate his seventieth birthday, Thurman's students and colleagues have come together to pay tribute to these contributions and to Thurman's ongoing leadership in these fields by assembling a collection of essays of their own that extend and supplement his groundbreaking research.
This is the first in a two-volume annotated translation of Tsong Khapa's Illumination of the Hidden Meaning (sbas don kun sel). A magnificent and massive commentary on the Cakrasamvara Tantra, this is first English translation of a work that marks a milestone in the Tibetan assimilation of the Indian Buddhist tantras. This first volume, which includes Tsong Khapa's detailed introduction to chapters 1 to 24 of the 51 chapter root tantra, covers the history of the tradition, its interpretation, and a range of topics including the construction of the mandala, the consecration therein, and the decoding of mantras and their ritual applications, as well as extensive details concerning the clans of the yoginis and the procedures to win their favor. David B. Gray situates the work in context and explores in depth the sources used in composing this commentary. He also provides detailed notes, a trilingual English-Tibetan-Sanskrit glossary, and an appendix that includes a translation and a critical edition of the Laghusamvaratantrapatalabhisandhi, , a synopsis of the Cakrasamvara Tantra composed by Sumatikirti, which is quoted in its entirety by Tsong Khapa in his commentary.
In Vimalakirti's House is the result of this collaboration and represents a broad spectrum of cutting edge studies in areas central to Thurman's own scholarly project. The resulting volume is itself a kind of ;treasury of the "Buddhist sciences," insofar as its authors explore wide-ranging problems in art, literature, epistemology, history, ritual, buddhology, and lexicography. $56.00 / ÂŁ38.50 cloth 978-1-935011-19-4 2015 500 pages / 7 illus.

Psychedelics and Religious Experiences
Early Twentieth-Century Engagements
William A. Richards
Erik J. Hammerstrom
"William Richards, a grand signeur of psychedelic therapy, provides the reader with a comprehensive overview on the past and recent therapeutic work with psychedelics and its implications for an understanding of the deeper reaches of human nature as uncovered by deep personal and religious mystical experiences." — Torsten Passie, Dept. Psychiatry, Social Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Hannover Medical School, Germany "Bill Richards seamlessly weaves together his extensive understanding of spirituality on the one hand, and academic and clinical science on the other — a rare combination.... His humor, insights and empathy shine through on every page. The topic is timely, and a manifestation of the fact that the intellectual battle regarding the potential of non-ordinary states of consciousness (as, in this case, facilitated by psychedelics) has been won." — Amanda Feilding, Director of the Beckley Foundation
"Erik Hammerstrom masterfully reveals the ways Chinese Buddhist intellectuals of Republican China reconfigured Buddhism to make it compatible with science and modernity, as well as argued for Buddhism's superiority to them. With fascinating stories and a meticulous analysis, Hammerstrom's book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand Buddhism's makeover as the paradigm of science dawned over East Asia." — Hwansoo Ilmee Kim, Duke University Showcasing the rich and progressive steps Chinese religious scholars took in adapting to science's rising authority, this volume offers a key perspective on how a major Eastern power transitioned to modernity in the twentieth century and how its intellectuals anticipated many of the ideas debated by scholars of science and Buddhism today. $50.00 / £34.50 cloth 978-0-231-17034-5 2015 264 pages The Sheng Yen Series in Chinese buddhist Studies

"This book is the perfect answer to dogmatic atheism and religious fundamentalism, two dangerous trends in our polarized world.... Eric Dietrich shows very elegantly how both science and philosophy deepen the mystery of existence and awareness of existence. If you are not perpetually surprised that you exist, your humanity is incomplete. To be fully human is to wonder, to have true humility, gratitude, and reverence for life. "An amazing book and a stellar contribution to Columbia University Press's growing catalog of Tibetan and Tibetan Buddhist studies, for it will be the key book on medicine and religion in Tibet for this generation. Like Gyatso's book on autobiography, her new book on medicine will simply be field defining."

"Science, Eric Dietrich claims, is the most open door into profound mystery that human beings have yet invented. Excellent Beauty urges science to wrest control of the discourse of mystery from religions, which have fiercely defended their claim to be the exclusive purveyors of mystery for centuries. The mystery science reveals is not a god who loves us, but an unknowable universe in which we must learn to take care of ourselves." — Chris Fields, New Mexico State University

Evan Thompson Foreword by Stephen Batchelor
"[Thompson] pushes us to think beyond our entrenched conceptual boundaries, not with vague arguments or wishful thinking but with equal doses of logical rigor and phenomenological empathy." — William S. Waldron, Middlebury College "Waking Dreaming Being will soon be considered a landmark and a tipping point in consciousness investigations." — Journal of Mind and Behavior A renowned philosopher of the mind, also known for his groundbreaking work on Buddhism and cognitive science, Evan Thompson combines the latest neuroscience research on sleep, dreaming, and meditation with Indian and Western philosophy of the mind, casting new light on the self and its relation to the brain. $32.50 / £22.95 cloth 978-0-231-13709-6 2014 496 pages

Bauman weaves a complex and powerful narrative in his constitution of a planetary community. Religion and Ecology is a unique contribution to a growing body of work that critically rethinks our ideas of nature to vitalize the possibilities of material and ecological thinking." — Clayton Crockett, University of Central Arkansas $32.00 / £22.00 paper 978-0-231-16343-9 $95.00 / £65.50 cloth 978-0-231-16342-2 2014 256 pages

Religion, Secularism, and Constitutional Democracy Edited by Jean L. Cohen and Cécile Laborde "Few topics energize debates within the fields of human rights, constitutionalism and political theory as the question of scope of religious authority. This volume is practically a 'who's-who' of the very top scholars writing on religion, secularism and cultural pluralism. It is at the cutting edge of debates in all of these fields and will be required reading in seminar rooms across North America and Europe." — Andrew F. March, author of Islam and Liberal Citizenship Critically engaging with traditional secularism and religious accommodationism, this collection introduces a constitutional secularism that robustly meets contemporary challenges. It identifies which connections between religion and the state are compatible with the liberal, republican, and democratic principles of constitutional democracy and assesses the success of their implementation in the birthplace of political secularism: the United States and Western Europe. $40.00 / £27.50 paper 978-0-231-16871-7
Relativism and Religion Do Democratic Societies Need Moral Absolutes? Carlo Invernizzi Accetti "Since the emergence of democracy in the Western World, the Catholic Church has warned that democracies' association with cultural relativism leads to a new totalitarianism. In this compelling book, Carlo Invernizzi Accetti reveals the origins of this demand for absolute moral and political truths. Against Habermas and Rawls, whose theories accept the submission of democratic deliberation to moral value, Carlo Invernizzi Accetti defends a challenging point of view: individual moral relativism not only complements but reinforces democracy. Clear and convincing!" — Patrick Weil, Yale University By engaging with attempts to replace the religious foundation of democratic values with a neo-Kantian conception of reason, this book offers a powerful case for relativism as the strongest basis for a civic ethos that integrates different perspectives into democratic politics. $65.00 / £45.00 cloth 978-0-231-17078-9 2015 288 pages Religion, Culture, and Public Life

The Challenge of Inclusive Communities
Religion and Politics in the Greco-Roman World
George Rupp
Edited by Edward Dabrowa
Beyond Individualism

Who’s Afraid of Academic Freedom?
Harmattan
Edited by Akeel Bilgrami and Jonathan R. Cole
Michael Jackson
A Philosophical Fiction
"This impressive collection of 17 essays, with its broad range of social, scientific, legal and philosophical analyses, will be vitally important to democratic and political dialogue.”
"A...thoughtful rendering of an exotic locale that recalls The Quiet American."
— Times Higher Education
"Harmattan is a remarkable inquiry into the intricate interweave between fact and fantasy, anthropological observation and imaginative fiction. In venturing ever further into the text, the reader is deliriously caught, like the book's narrators, in a multichambered realm of storytelling where life, death, friendship, and the elusiveness of truth are the most critical terms of existence."
“Is academic freedom a subset of the freedom of speech, and if not, what is it? Who sets the rules for freedom of this or any kind? Who changes the rules when they don’t seem to be working? And what does ‘working’ mean in this context? There are no easy answers in this book, but there are ideas and counter-ideas in abundance, and it handsomely illustrates and defends (and shows it is not afraid of ) the value it names in its title.” — Michael Wood, author of Literature and the Taste of Knowledge and Yeats and Violence

Kimerer L. LaMothe "A rare and welcome book. LaMothe offers a view of the world from one who has woven together three experiential bodies of knowledge crucial to gaining insight into the terrible fractures eroding human life. A dancer and a scholar of dance, she is also a mother and a farmer. Her writing has the feel of the kinds of wisdom cultivated in older cultures, through rituals rooted in the ancient patterns of the cosmos. She brings her considerable experience of moving to bear on the basic questions that engage us all: mattering, meaning, connecting, healing, loving, and caring for the earth." — Don Hanlon Johnson, author of Body, Spirit, and Democracy $30.00 / £20.50 paper 978-0-231-17105-2 $90.00 / £62.00 cloth 978-0-231-17104-5 2015 304 pages

Mormonism and American Politics
An Introduction and Case Studies
Edited by Randall Balmer and Jana Riess
Rebecca T. Alpert “In Religion and Sports, Rebecca T. Alpert offers a series of expertly crafted case studies with innovative, provocative, and compelling suggested exercises for classroom use. The case studies are superb in their content and accessibility and cover a wide range of sports from across the globe, raising important questions related to race, gender, ethnicity, creed, pluralism, and moral complexity.” — Arthur Remillard, Saint Francis University wwwwRebecca Alpert explores the place of sports in mainstream faiths, such as Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity, and lesser-known religious groups, particularly in Africa. She covers football, baseball, and basketball but also archery, soccer, bullfighting, judo, and track. Essays reflect all skill levels, from amateur to professional, and find surprising affinities among practices and cultures in locations as disparate as Germany and Japan, Spain and Saudi Arabia. Thoroughly examining a range of phenomena, this collection fully captures the unique overlap of two universal institutions and their interplay with human society, politics, and culture. $28.00/ £19.50 paper 978-0-231-16571-6
"Mormonism and American Politics is the most deft, discerning, and nearly definitive book of essays about Mormons and politics ever published. The authors treat captivating facets of Mormon history — some famous, some unearthed here — with an eye-popping verve that shapes a new vista on both Mormonism and the evolving America in which it emerged." — Jon Butler, Yale University "Charting the shifting alliances and tensions between Mormonism and broader national currents, this volume offers an incisive narrative of the history of religious engagement with electoral politics. As the quintessential 'outsider religion,' Mormonism has danced on the knife-edge between toleration and rejection, acceptable diversity and illegitimate cult. These evocative essays trace that distinctively American dance and offer important lessons about the promise and perils of religious pluralism." — Laurie Maffly-Kipp, Washington University $30.00 / £20.50 paper 978-0-231-16599-0 $90.00 / £62.00 cloth 978-0-231-16598-3 2015 264 pages / 13 illus. The Hidden God
Realizing Awakened Consciousness
Pragmatism and Posthumanism in American Thought
Interviews with Buddhist Teachers and a New Perspective on the Mind
Ryan White
Richard P. Boyle
"The Hidden God completely transforms our understanding of pragmatism, its place in the genealogy of posthumanist thought, and its relationship to precursors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jonathan Edwards, and the Puritans. We will never think about pragmatism — what it means, where it came from, and where it leads — in the same way again. The fact that we also find here a remarkable rereading of the work of Charles Sanders Peirce — and Peirce's relationship to William James — makes an already illuminating work of scholarship even more invaluable." — Cary Wolfe, Rice University The Hidden God revisits the origins of American pragmatism and finds a nascent "posthumanist" critique shaping early modern thought. By reaching as far back as the Calvinist arguments of the American Puritans and their struggle to know a "hidden God," this book brings American pragmatism closer to contemporary critical theory. $50.00 / £34.50 cloth 978-0-231-17100-7
"If Buddhism is to realize its liberative potential in the modern world, we need to learn a lot more about the nature of awakening. This book is an important step in that direction. Boyle's interviews with well-known Western teachers are insightful (sometimes fascinating) in themselves, and the conclusions that he draws from them are a significant contribution to our understanding of contemplative traditions." — David Loy, author of A New Buddhist Path: Enlightenment, Evolution, and Ethics in the Modern World A student of cognitive social science and a Zen practitioner for more than forty years, Richard P. Boyle brings his sophisticated perspective to bear on the development of a theoretical model for both ordinary and awakened consciousness. $30.00 / £20.50 paper 978-0-231-17075-8 $90.00 / £62.00 cloth 978-0-231-17074-1 2015 368 pages / 11 illus.

Using JPUSA's influential Cornerstone Music Festival as a lens, Young illumines the community's struggles and — ultimately — changes in the larger evangelical subculture. Human Kindness and the Smell of Warm Croissants An Introduction to Ethics Ruwen Ogien Translated by Martin Thom
"A lucid translation of a wide-ranging intellectual foray." — Booklist (starred review) Ogien explores, through experimental philosophy and other methods, the responses nineteen real-world conundrums provoke. Is a short, mediocre life better than no life at all? Is it acceptable to kill a healthy person so his organs can save five others? Would you swap a "natural" life filled with frustration, disappointment, and partial success for a world in which all of your needs are met, but through artificial and mechanical means? Ogien doesn't seek to show how difficult it is to determine right from wrong or how easy it is for humans to become monsters or react like saints. Helping us tap into the wisdom and feeling we already possess in our ethical "toolboxes," Ogien instead encourages readers to question moral presuppositions and rules; embrace an intuitive sense of dignity, virtue, and justice; and pursue a pluralist ethics suited to the principles of human kindness. $30.00 / £20.50 paper 978-0-231-16923-3 $90.00 / £62.00 cloth 978-0-231-16922-6 2015 256 pages

Beastly Morality
— Celia Deane-Drummond, University of Notre Dame, Indiana Drawing not only on ethics and religion but also on law, sociology, and cognitive science, the essays in this collection test long-held certainties about moral boundaries and behaviors and prove that nonhuman animals possess complex reasoning capacities, sophisticated empathic sociality, and dynamic and enduring self-conceptions. $35.00 / £24.00 paper 978-0-231-17417-6 $105.00 / £72.50 cloth 978-0-231-17416-9
"With this highly original and exciting book, Aaron Gross stands at the cutting edge of a radical reconsideration of the nature of religiosity and theological reflection." — Susannah Heschel, Dartmouth College "Starting from the scandal evoked by the revelation of grossly cruel practices in kosher slaughterhouses in the United States, and the subsequent defense of these practices by leading figures in Orthodox Jewry, Aaron Gross proceeds to a wide-ranging exploration into the justification of slaughter in Abrahamic religion and into our willed blindness to the animal as a religious subject. His philosophical and theological inquiries are driven by well-justified ethical concern at what factory farming, buttressed by so-called animal science, tells about the age we live in." — J.M. Collaboration and Conflict in the Age of Diaspora
Transcultural Views from Asia and Europe
Edited by Sander L. Gilman This volume examines Abrahamic cultures as minority groups in societies which may be majority Muslim, Christian or Jewish, or self-consciously secular. The focus is on the relationships between these religious identities in global Diaspora, where all of them are confronted with claims about national and individual difference. The case studies range from colonial Hong Kong and Victorian London to today's San Francisco and rural India. Each study shows how complex such relationships can be and how important it is to situate them in the cultural, ethnic, and historical context of their world. The chapters explore ritual practice, conversion, colonization, immigration, and cultural representations of the differences between the Abrahamic religions. An important theme is how the complex patterns of interaction among these religions embrace collaboration as well as conflict, even in the modern Middle East. $65.00 / ÂŁ45.00 cloth 978-9888-20-827-2
Edited by Judith Schlehe and Evamaria SandkĂźhler A rapid development of religious popular cultures and lifestyles can be observed across the globe. This book provides unique case studies from Asia and Europe illustrating new religious practices, forms of articulation and mass mediatization, all of which render religious traditions significant for contemporary issues and concerns. The essays examine experiences of spirituality in combination with commercialization and expressive performative practices as well as everyday politics of identity. Based on innovative theoretical reflections, the essays take into consideration what the transcultural negotiation of religion, tradition and the popular signifies in different places and social contexts. With contributions by Anthony Reid, Hubert Knoblauch, Ariel Heryanto, Stefanie von Schnurbein and others. $50.00 paper 978-3-8376-2613-1 2014 286 pages / 8 illus.

inside the power struggle roiling the roman curia and the catholic church worldwide, beginning with Benedict XVi, the pope who famously resigned in 2013, and intensifying with the contested and unexpected election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, now known as Pope Francis. Politi’s account balances the perspectives of Pope Francis’s supporters, Benedict’s sympathizers, and those disappointed members of the catholic laity who feel alienated by the institution’s secrecy, financial corruption, and refusal to modernize. Politi dramatically recounts the sexual scandals that have rocked the church and the accusations of money laundering and other financial misdeeds swirling around the Vatican and the italian catholic establishment. Pope Francis has tried to shine a light on these crimes, but his work has been met with resistance from entrenched factions. Politi writes of the decline in church attendance and vocations to the priesthood throughout the world as the church continues to prohibit divorced and remarried catholics from receiving the communion wafer. He visits european parishes where women now perform the functions of missing male priests—and where the remaining parishioners would welcome the admission of women to the priesthood, if the church would allow it.

Contemporary Life and Witchcraft
Pope Francis Among the Wolves
Magic, Divination, and Religious Ritual in Europe
The Inside Story of a Revolution
Alexandra Tataran
Translated by William McCuaig
Witchcraft is very much alive in today's post-communist societies. Stemming from ancient rural traditions and influenced by modern New Age concepts, it has kept its function as a vibrant cultural code to combat the adversities of everyday life. Intricately linked to the Orthodox church and its rituals, the magic discourse serves as a recourse for those in distress, a mechanism to counter-balance misfortune and, sometimes, a powerful medium for acts of aggression. Alexandra Tataran skillfully re-contextualizes the vast and heterogenuous discourse on contemporary witchcraft. She shows how magic, divination, and religious rituals are adapted to the complex mechanisms of modern mentalities and urban living in the specific historical and social context of postcommunist countries. Based on years of first-hand fieldwork, Tataran offers insights into the experience of individuals deeming themselves bewitched and demonstrates how traditions and pre-existing cultural models are adapted by individuals in contemporary society. $36.00 / £25.00 paper 978-3-8382-0778-0 February 2016 176 pages

ISLAMIC STUDIES Forthcoming January
Who Made Early Christianity? The Jewish Lives of the Apostle Paul John G. Gager "Who Made Early Christianity? reframes the question in its title and offers a new, revisionist account of the origins of Christianity. John G. Gager reveals the profound Jewishness of early Christianity and reconsiders Paul's role in the formation of Christianity, anti-Judaism in the early Church, and the parting of ways between the two religious faiths. With stunning clarity, his book demonstrates how timely and relevant great scholarship can be to our contemporary world." — David Stern, Harvard University In this historical and theological study, John G. Gager undermines the myth of the Apostle Paul's rejection of Judaism, conversion to Christianity, and founding of Christian anti-Judaism. Making use of all possible literary and archaeological sources, including Muslim texts, Gager helps recover the long pre-history of a Jewish Paul, obscured by recent, negative portrayals of the Apostle, and recognizes the enduring bond between Jews and Christians that has influenced all aspects of Christianity. $30.00 / £20.50 cloth 978-0-231-17404-6 2015 208 pages / 12 illus. At the same time, he proposes a fresh interpretative framework and a new data set for theorizing the early history of Islam, isolating the contradictions between Shi’ite and Sunni sources and their contribution to the tensions that rile these groups today. $65.00 / £45.00 cloth 978-0-231-17378-0 January 2016 296 pages

The Making of Salafism
A Calypso Jews
Islamic Reform in the Twentieth Century
Jewishness in the Caribbean Literary Imagination
Henri Lauzière “This book fills a crucial gap in modern Islamic intellectual history: it untangles the now ubiquitous term “Salafism,” showing how the concept was invented, used, and contested through the twentieth century as both an analytical tool and a self-identifier. This conceptual history is paired with rich biographical material, which locates the shifting meanings of Salafism in the context of the wider historical processes of colonialism and independence.” — Ahmed El Shamsy, The University of Chicago Today, Salafis claim a monopoly on religious truth and freely confront other Muslims on theological and legal issues. Lauzière’s pathbreaking history recognizes the social forces behind this purist turn, uncovering the popular origins of what has become a global phenomenon. $55.00 / £38.00 cloth 978-0-231-17550-0 2015 328 pages Religion, Culture, and Public Life
Sarah Phillips Casteel "Calypso Jews is the first comprehensive account of the multilayered relationship between diasporic Jews and the Caribbean. It is lucidly written and has a historical reach from 1492 to the Holocaust. Always open to the nuances of modern and contemporary Caribbean poetics, Calypso Jews is highly informative and helps rethink many topics ranging from Black-Jewish relations to creolization theory, from slave narratives to Holocaust diaries." — Bryan Cheyette, author of Diasporas of the Mind: Jewish and Postcolonial Writing and the Nightmare of History Providing an alternative to U.S.-based critical narratives of Black-Jewish relations, Casteel reads Derek Walcott, Maryse Cond, Michelle Cliff, Jamaica Kincaid, Caryl Phillips, David Dabydeen, and Paul Gilroy, among others, to reveal a distinctive interdiasporic literature. $60.00 / £41.50 cloth 978-0-231-17440-4 January 2016 352 / 11 illus.
