Letter from the editors
We are delighted to present the Columbia University Press Asian Studies catalogue of new books for 2018. The books gathered here span many fields in Asian studies—literary studies, philosophy, religion, history, politics, and film—and reflect the interdisciplinary and global approach of our list. We offer several important new translations of both classic and modern literary works. Phyllis I. Lyons rescues Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s literary thriller In Black and White from obscurity, and Janet Poole brings together Yi T’aejun’s stories before and after the celebrated colonial-era author “went North” in Dust and Other Stories. Patrick Hannan’s translation of Quelling the Demon Revolt and Christopher Rea and Bruce Rusk’s of the Book of Swindles offer raucous adventures from premodern China, while in Monsters, Animals, and Other Worlds, Keller Kimbrough and Haruo Shirane collect entertaining medieval Japanese tales. John Nathan’s enthralling biography of Natsume Sōseki is the first in 50 years. We are also proud to announce the inaugural Center for Korean Research Book, Christina Yi’s Colonizing Language: Cultural Production and Language Politics in Modern Japan and Korea. Aili Mu’s Contemporary Chinese Short-Short Stories wins this year’s Franklin Buchanan Prize for Curricular Materials from the AAS. Equally useful for teaching are How to Read Chinese Poetry in Context, the latest entry in Zong-qi Cai’s How to Read Chinese Literature series, and Premodern Korean Literary Prose: An Anthology, edited by Michael J. Pettid, Gregory N. Evon, and Chan Park. In history and politics, Columbia continues its long tradition of publishing cutting-edge works that speak to Asia’s past and present. New books in history explore the important role of early modern literati, such as Ori Sela’s China’s Philological Turn, and the tension of modern globalizing forces, as seen in Simon Partner’s history of Yokohama traders, The Merchant’s Tale, and the 2018 AAS Levgold Post-1800 Prize winner, Chinese Law in Imperial Eyes by Li Chen, now out in paperback. With Asia in the contemporary headlines, Columbia is delighted to publish relevant works on the politics of the region. Scott Snyder analyzes South Korea at the Crossroads; Michael Green tells the long history of US grand strategy in the Pacific in By More Than Providence; and Rongbin Han goes deep into China’s hidden online political communities in Contesting Cyberspace in China. Among the many outstanding philosophy and religion titles in this year’s wide-ranging catalog, several deserve special attention. Bryan Van Norden’s Taking Back Philosophy: A Multicultural Manifesto lambastes academic philosophy in the West for its Eurocentrism and passionately advocates for a cosmopolitan approach. Genuine Pretending: On the Philosophy of the Zhuangzi by Hans-Georg Moeller and Paul J. D’Ambrosio offers a radical new interpretation of this Daoist classic that emphasizes its playful, unattached engagement with Confucianism’s social norms. The Oneness Hypothesis: Beyond the Boundary of Self, edited by Philip J. Ivanhoe, Owen J. Flanagan, Victoria S. Harrison, and Eric Schwitzgebel, presents an interdisciplinary exploration of the idea that the self is inextricably relational, forever entangled with the surrounding world, a view that profoundly challenges Western hyperindividualism. Finally, Gender, Power, and Talent: The Journey of Daoist Priestesses in Tang China by Jinhua Jia opens a window on a period during which women played an unprecedented role in Chinese religious and public life. We hope you share our enthusiasm for these books and the course they mark for the future of our list. Sincerely, Caelyn Cobb, editor for global history and politics Christine Dunbar, editor for Asian humanities and translations Wendy Lochner, publisher for philosophy and religion

HOW TO READ CHINESE LITERATURE
Hidden and Visible Realms
Quelling the Demons' Revolt
Early Medieval Chinese Tales of the Supernatural and the Fantastic
A Novel from Ming China Attributed to Luo Guanzhong
Complied by Liu Yiqing
Translated by Patrick Hanan
Edited and translated by Zhenjun Zhang
Introduction by Ellen B. Widmer and David Der-wei Wang
Although the story takes place long before the era in which it was written, ultimately Quelling the Demons’ Revolt is the story of the Ming dynasty in Song masquerade, presciently warning of the dynasty’s downfall. The novel is divided into chapters, but in many ways it is an arrangement of self-contained stories that draw on vernacular storytelling. This translation offers English-speaking readers a spirited example of social critique combined with caustic humor from the era of Luo Guanzhong. $28.00 / £22.95 paper 978-0-231-18307-9
Hidden and Visible Realms is one of the most significant medieval Chinese collections of stories of otherworldly phenomena and the fantastic, distinguished by its varied contents, elegant writing style, and Buddhist influence. Socialist Cosmopolitanism
The Chinese Literary Universe, 1945–1965 Nicolai Volland
$60.00 / £49.95 cloth 978-0-231-18794-7
Socialist Cosmopolitanism offers an innovative interpretation of literary works of the Mao era that reads Chinese socialist literature as world literature. Far from rejecting the worldliness of earlier eras, the young People’s Republic developed its own cosmopolitanism that viewed its own cultural works as part of a much larger universe and an ambitious— but ultimately doomed—attempt to redraw the literary world map.

In this book, Ling Hon Lam gives an account of the history of emotions in Chinese literature and culture centered on the idea of emotion as space, which the Chinese call “emotion-realm” (qingjing). Lam challenges the conventional reading of Chinese literature as premised on interior subjectivity, examining historical changes in the spatial logic of performance through media and theater.

An Anthology of Ancient Chinese Poetry by Qu Yuan and Others

Translated by Michael Berry
Qu Yuan
Edited and translated by Gopal Sukhu
Qu Yuan was as important to the development of Chinese literature as Homer was to the development of Western literature. This translation attempts to replicate what the work might have meant to those for whom it was originally intended, rather than settling for what it was made to mean by those who inherited it. It accounts for the new view of the state of Chu that recent discoveries have inspired. $35.00 / £30.00 paper 978-0-231-16607-2 $105.00 / £88.00 cloth 978-0-231-16606-5 2017 256 pages
On October 27, 1930, during a sports meet on an aboriginal reservation in Taiwan, a bloody uprising occurred. Before noon, the Atayal tribe had slain one hundred and thirty-four Japanese in a headhunting ritual. The Japanese responded with a military barrage, bringing the tribe to the brink of genocide. Remains of Life, a milestone of Chinese experimental literature, is a fictionalized account of the writer’s experiences among the people who live their lives in the aftermath of this history. $28.00 / £22.95 paper 978-0-231-16601-0 $85.00 / £71.00 cloth 978-0-231-16600-3

Taipei People Pai Hsien-yung Translated by the author and Patia Yasin
Gao Xingjian Translated by Gilbert C. F. Fong.
Edited by George Kao
Widely acclaimed as a classic of contemporary fiction, Taipei People has been frequently compared to James Joyce's Dubliners. Literary critics such as C. T. Hsia called Pai Hsien-yung a “rare talent.” According to another critic, “he has absorbed the diverse techniques of contemporary Western literature to temper and modernize his writing; however, the characters he writes about remain Chinese people and the stories he tells remain Chinese tales.” $18.00 paper 978-988-237-006-7

Hans-Georg Moeller & Paul J. D’Ambrosio
How can Daoism, China’s indigenous religion, give us the aesthetic, ethical, political, and spiritual tools to address the root causes of our ecological crisis and construct a sustainable future? In China’s Green Religion, James Miller shows how Daoism orients individuals toward a holistic understanding of religion and nature. Explicitly connecting human flourishing to the thriving of nature, Daoism fosters a “green” subjectivity and agency that transforms what it means to live a flourishing life on earth. $60.00 / £49.95 cloth 978-0-231-17586-9 2017 224 pages
Genuine Pretending is an innovative and comprehensive new reading of the Zhuangzi that highlights the critical and therapeutic functions of satire and humor. Hans-Georg Moeller and Paul J. D’Ambrosio show how this Daoist classic, contrary to contemporary philosophical readings, distances itself from the pursuit of authenticity and subverts the dominant Confucianism of its time through satirical allegories and ironic reflections. $35.00 / £27.95

Global Entanglements of a Man Who Never Traveled
Forging the Golden Urn The Qing Empire and the Politics of Reincarnation in Tibet
A Seventeenth-Century Chinese Christian and His Conflicted Worlds
Max Oidtmann
Dominic Sachsenmaier
The seventeenth-century Chinese Christian convert Zhu Zongyuan likely never left his home province, yet led a remarkably global life. Through scholarly activities and globalizing Catholicism, he was in contact with a complex—and contradictory—set of foreign and domestic forces. Dominic Sachsenmaier explores the mid-seventeenth-century world through the lens of Zhu’s life, combining the local, regional, and global.
A Qing-era law mandated that the reincarnations of prominent Tibetan Buddhist monks be identified by drawing lots from a golden urn. In Forging the Golden Urn, Max Oidtmann traces how a Chinese bureaucratic technology was exported to the Tibetan and Mongolian regions of the Qing empire and transformed into a ritual for identifying and authenticating reincarnations.

The Oneness Hypothesis
Taking Back Philosophy
Edited by Philip J. Ivanhoe, Owen J. Flanagan, Victoria S. Harrison, Hagop Sarkissian, and Eric Schwitzgebel
Bryan W. Van Norden
Beyond the Boundary of Self
The idea that the self is inextricably intertwined with the rest of the world—the “oneness hypothesis”—can be found in many of the world’s philosophical and religious traditions. Challenging dominant traditional views that presume the proper scope of the mind stops at the boundaries of the skin and skull, The Oneness Hypothesis shows that a more relational conception of the self is not only consistent with contemporary science but has the potential to lead to greater happiness and well-being for both individuals and the larger wholes of which they are parts. $40.00 / £32.95 cloth 978-0-231-18298-0
A Multicultural Manifesto Foreword by Jay L. Garfield
Taking Back Philosophy is at once a manifesto for multicultural education, an accessible introduction to Confucian and Buddhist philosophy, a critique of the ethnocentrism and anti-intellectualism characteristic of much contemporary American politics, a defense of the value of philosophy and a liberal arts education, and a call to return to the search for the good life that defined philosophy for Confucius, Socrates, and the Buddha. $26.00 / £20.95 paper 978-0-231-18437-3 $75.00 / £62.95 cloth 978-0-231-18436-6 2017 248 pages

China's War on Smuggling
Contesting Cyberspace in China
Law, Economic Life, and the Making of the Modern State, 1842–1965
Online Expression and Authoritarian Resilience Rongbin Han
Rongbin Han offers a powerful explanation for the survival of the world’s largest authoritarian regime in the digital age. Han reveals the complex internal dynamics of online expression in China, showing how the state, service providers, and netizens negotiate the limits of discourse. He finds that state censorship has conditioned online expression but has failed to bring it under control. Han also finds that freer expression may work to the regime’s advantage in a number of ways, including the presence of state-sponsered, spontaneous, pro-government commenters on the Internet. $30.00 / £24.95 paper 978-0-231-18475-5 $90.00 / £74.95 cloth 978-0-231-18474-8

Philip Thai chronicles the vicissitudes of smuggling in modern China—its practice, suppression, and significance—to demonstrate the intimate link between coastal smuggling and the amplification of state power. Thai traces how different regimes sought to police maritime trade and the unintended consequences their campaigns unleashed. How Unorthodox PolicyMaking Facilitated China's Rise
The Origin and Development of the Yan'an Rectification Movement, 1930–1945
Sebastian Heilmann
Gao Hua
Translated by Stacey Mosher and Guo Jian
Gao Hua explores the origins and consequences of the Yan'an Rectification Movement from 1942 to 1945, arguing that it emancipated the Chinese Communist Party from Soviet influence and unified the party in preparation for victory over the Nationalists. The book also shows how Mao Zedong established his leadership over the party, with continuing influence on Chinese political structure today. $70.00 / £58.95 cloth 978-962-996-822-9
China's exceptional development trajectory challenges conventional wisdom as well as conventional models of political change. This book explains policy making in China's governmental system as an open-ended process with an uncertain outcome, driven by conflicting interests, recurrent interactions, and continuous feedback, detailing how action programs can be developed, formulated, implemented, adjusted, and revised.

A Comparison of the Russian and Chinese Revolutions
Ambrose Y. C. King

Translated by Krystyna Horko
Ambrose Y. C. King explores Confucian networks and the development of capitalist economies, democratic governance, and moral education. He analyses how Confucian ideas and values underpinning the foundation of East Asian societies—including social civility, political governance, the role of the family, individual self-cultivation, and moral regulation—matter to the modern social and political transformations of Chinese societies today. $45.00 cloth

China’s ascent to the rank of the world’s second largest economic power has given its revolution a better image than that of its Russian counterpart. Yet the two have a great deal in common. Indeed, the Chinese revolution was a carbon copy of its predecessor until Mao became aware not of the failures of the Russian model, but rather of its inability to adapt to an overcrowded third-world country. Lucien Bianco’s comparative study highlights the similarities and differences.

Gender, Health, and History in Modern East Asia
Buddhist Visual Cultures, Rhetoric, and Narrative in Late Burmese Wall Paintings
Edited by Angela Ki Che Leung and Izumi Nakayama
This volume analyzes how scientists, government officials, educators, and the general public in East Asia came to terms with the introduction of Western biological and medical sciences. Demonstrating how concerns with gender and health have been woven into modernization and nation building, contributors show how individuals and societies made sense of scientific discourses on diseases, body, sex, and reproduction. $50.00 / £41.95 cloth 978-988-8390-90-8

Step into a Burmese temple built between the late seventeenth and early nineteenth centuries and you are surrounded by a riot of color and imagery. The majority of the highly detailed wall paintings display Buddhist biographical narratives, inspiring the devotees to follow the Buddha’s teachings. Alexandra Green considers the temples and their contents as a whole, arguing that the wall paintings mediate the relationship between the architecture and the main Buddha statues in the temples.

Conjecturing Hong Kong’s Future
Encounters Across Cultures in Hong Kong, 1841–1984
Editorials from Lam Hang Chi’s the Hong Kong Economic Journal, 1975–1984
Edited by Elizabeth Sinn and Christopher Munn
Lam Hang Chi
Edited and translated by J. S. Kung
Meeting Place presents detailed empirical studies of day-to-day interactions among people of different cultures in Hong Kong. The broad conclusion—that there was sustained and multilevel contact among men and women of different cultures—will challenge traditional historical understandings of Hong Kong as a city either of rigid segregation or of pervasive integration.
The editorials collected in this book date from 1975 to 1984, the period during which the Joint Declaration between Britain and China on Hong Kong was negotiated. Lam Hang Chi’s editorials and conjectures provided a focal point for discussing Hong Kong’s future. His views on housing, assimilating immigrants, and the collusion of politics and business are still insightful.

Poetry, Print, and Community in Nineteenth-Century Japan
Abe Kōbō

Robert Tuck
Robert Tuck offers a groundbreaking study of the connections among traditional poetic genres, print media, and visions of national community in late nineteenth-century Japan. Structured around the work of Masaoka Shiki, Idly Scribbling Rhymers reveals poetry’s surprising yet fundamental role in emerging forms of media and national consciousness.
In the aftermath of World War II, a Japanese youth raised in the puppet state of Manchuria struggles to return home to Japan. CHOICE OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC TITLE
Hidden Atrocities reveals the American obstruction that denied justice to Japan’s World War II victims at the postwar Tokyo Trial. Jeanne Guillemin explains how U.S. national security goals led to the failure to prosecute imperial Japanese leaders for the war crimes of Unit 731, Japan’s secret germ-warfare program. Guillemin’s vivid account shows how power politics can jeopardize international justice, with persistent consequences.
Examining the moral, ethical, legal, and political issues surrounding the Allied prosecution project, from the first investigations during the war to the final release of prisoners in 1958, Japanese War Criminals shows how a simple effort to punish the guilty evolved into a struggle that muddied the assignment of responsibility for war crimes. $70.00 / £58.95 cloth 978-0-231-17922-5 2017 440 pages 21 illus.

South Korea at the Crossroads
The Return of Bipolarity in World Politics
Autonomy and Alliance in an Era of Rival Powers
China, the United States, and Geostructural Realism
Scott A. Snyder
Øystein Tunsjø
Øystein Tunsjø surveys the new era of superpowers to argue that the combined effects of the narrowing power gap between China and the United States and the widening power gap between China and any third-ranking power portend a new bipolar system that will differ in crucial ways from that of the last century. Tunsjø predicts that the two superpowers will not be as prone to arms races; that the risk of limited war is likely higher, and that rivalry and conflict between the two will occur in East Asia instead of globally.
In South Korea at the Crossroads, Scott A. Snyder examines the trajectory of fifty years of South Korean foreign policy and offers predictions—and a prescription—for the future. Pairing a historical perspective with a shrewd understanding of today’s political landscape, Snyder contends that South Korea’s best strategy remains investing in a robust alliance with the United States. $35.00 / £27.95 cloth 978-0-231-18548-6 2018 352 pages

Sex Trafficking
Inside the Business of Modern Slavery
Deterrence After the Cold War
Siddharth Kara
With a new preface by the author
Terence Roehrig
Terence Roehrig provides a comprehensive look at the nuclear umbrella in northeast Asia in the broader context of deterrence theory and U.S. strategy. He examines the role of the nuclear umbrella in Japanese and South Korean defense planning and security calculations, including the likelihood that either will develop its own nuclear weapons. Roehrig argues that the nuclear umbrella is most important as a political signal demonstrating commitment to the defense of allies and as a tool to prevent further nuclear proliferation in the region.
This new paperback edition of Sex Trafficking includes a preface by Kara in which he discusses his findings and updates the statistics that inform his business and economic analysis of contemporary slavery. After fifteen years, Kara has recorded nearly 900 cases of sex trafficking in forty-one countries and has helped advise on numerous legal, tactical, and policy efforts for abolishing modernday slavery across the globe.

Meeting with My Brother represents the political and psychological complexity of Koreans on both sides of the border, offering a complex yet poignant perspective on the divisions between the two countries. Through a series of charged conversations, Yi explores the nuances of reunification, both political and personal. This semiautobiographical account draws on Yi’s own experience of growing up with an absent father who defected to the North and the stigma of family disloyalty.
The Tale of Cho Ung is one of the most widely read and beloved stories of Choson Korea. The anonymously written tale recounts the adventures of protagonist Cho Ung as he overcomes obstacles and grows into a heroic young man. Drawing on a range of visual archives and personal collections, this book casts Rabindranath Tagore as the “Dancing Poet,” in whom the contours of a pan-Indian diversity seek to merge, albeit selectively, with that of the world, eschewing the territorial borders of the nation-state while reiterating civilizational strands. The book outlines the contradictions and possibilities in such aspirations, central to the new cultural texts that Tagore seeks to produce in lyric, songs, dance, image, or narrative.
This selection of poetry and prose by Ghalib provides an accessible and wide-ranging introduction to the preeminent Urdu poet of the nineteenth century. Ghalib’s poems, especially his ghazals, remain beloved throughout South Asia for their arresting intelligence and lively wit. These translations allow readers with little or no knowledge of Urdu to appreciate the wide range of Ghalib’s poetry, from his gift for extreme simplicity to his taste for unresolvable complexities of structure.

Economic History of India, AD 1206-1526, The Period of the Delhi Sultanate and the Vijayanagara Empire
Irfan Habib
Irfan Habib
This book considers the first phase of Indian popular resistance to colonial rule, a special position being given to the Revolt of 1857–1858; its nature and legacy; the rise of national consciousness and the factors leading to it; the movement for social reform and political awakening among the middle classes; and, finally, Gandhiji’s arrival and the agitations of 1917–1918.
This volume is devoted to the economic and social history of India from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century. It describes the agrarian order, urban economy, and trading world during the Delhi Sultanate (1206–1398), the subsequent period of political divisions, and conditions in the Vijayanagara Empire, which flourished during this period in south India.

Working at Others’ Homes

Everyday Lives of Dalit Agricultural Labourers in a Bihar Village
The Specifics and Challenges of Paid Domestic Work
Anand Chakravarti
Edited by Neetha N.
Working at Others' Homes volume addresses issues concerning work, including exclusion of domestic workers, reluctance and discomfort in accepting domestic workers as “workers,” alternative approaches to unionizing and the specific challenge, of negotiating personal relations, and the specificities of domestic work. Also included is a critical analysis of state policies and regulation of domestic work alongside specific issues of legal intervention pertaining to the broad framework of labor as well as women’s rights.
This study of the living conditions of Dalit agricultural laborers in Muktidih Village in southwest Bihar throws light on the problems they face in accessing the basic necessities of existence, including food, clothing, shelter, health care, and education. Anand Chakravarti shows that the lives of the laborers in Muktidih are part of a much bigger picture and argues that forces based on caste and class located in the wider political economy of Bihar are antithetical toward ameliorating the conditions of those living in poverty.

Essays for Binay Bhushan Chaudhuri
An Enquiry into Village Panchayat Databases
There is no area of Indian agrarian history that Binay Bhushan Chaudhuri has not traversed. This volume considers his work on the peasantry and the political economy of agriculture in eastern India, including the process of “depeasantization” and the forcible induction of tribes and forest dwellers into settled agriculture, as well as other aspects of social and cultural history.
A new structure of local government, the contemporary village panchayat, has emerged in rural India as a consequence of the Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992. This new statistical domain requires databases for the development functions that have been allocated to it. This book is a study of panchayat-level databases and their potential use in local administration, planning, and policy implementation.

Wang Ke
Translated by Carissa Fletcher
Hoang Khanh Linh Nguyen Da Nang City, located in the South Central Coast region of Vietnam, has seen rapid industrialization and urbanization causing incessant changes of land use and land cover. Linh Nguyen’s study detects, quantifies, and characterizes the changes in the Da Nang City region. The study provides new strategies for land-use planning in comparable regions facing rapid industrialization.
Based on rare firsthand historical data, Wang Ke presents an analysis of East Turkestan, including the perspective of Islamic social structure; the origin and evolution of thoughts on national revolution; the internal structure of the independence movement; and the power structure of the republic, international relations, and international politics.

MICHAEL J. GREEN
In today’s world, U.S. technological leadership increasingly involves collaboration with other countries. China and India have emerged as particularly prominent partners, most notably as suppliers of intellectual talent to the United States. In The Conflicted Superpower, Andrew B. Kennedy explores how the world’s most powerful country approaches its growing collaboration with these two rising powers. $35.00 / £27.95 cloth 978-0-231-18554-7 2018 280 pages
In a history that spans the eighteenth century to the present, Michael J. Green follows the development of U.S. strategic thinking toward East Asia. Green finds one overarching concern: that a rival power might use the Pacific to isolate and threaten the United States and prevent the ocean from becoming a conduit for the westward flow of trade and values. Green explores these problems from the perspective of history’s major strategists and statesmen, from Thomas Jefferson to Alfred Thayer Mahan and Henry Kissinger. $45.00 / £37.95 cloth 978-0-231-18042-9

Translation and Modernization in East Asia in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries
The Democratic Developmental State
North-South Perspectives
Edited by Chris Tapscott, Tor Halvorsen, and Teresita Cruz-Del Rosario
Edited by Lawrence Wang-chi Wong
This volume examines the role played by translation in the modernization processes of East Asian countries. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the West was viewed as a model for modernization and hence East Asia modernization occurred through learning from or even imitating the West. Translation played a crucial role when importing Western ideas, knowledge, concepts, and practices. Here, contributors explain the various translation phenomena in the modernization processes of China, Korea, and Japan.
Analyzing the different approaches to the implementation of democratic developmental states in various countries, contributors evaluate whether these are merely replicating the central tenets of the East Asian model of the developmental state or whether they are successfully establishing a new and more inclusive conceptualization of the state. $45.00 paper 978-3-8382-1045-2 2017 302 pages

Iconic Places in Central Asia
Sangin Beg
The Moral Geography of Dams, Pastures, and Holy Sites
Translated by Nausheen Jaffery Edited by Swapna Liddle
Jeanne Féaux de la Croix
Written in the 1820s, Sair-ul-Manazil is the first known attempt to systematically list the monuments of the city of Delhi. Apart from public buildings like mosques, temples, shrines, and tombs, it lists wells, gardens, houses, shops, and stray graves. The author provides vivid descriptions of the various localities of the city, the people who lived and worked there in his time, social activities and fairs, and historical anecdotes connected with places and people. $25.00 / £19.95 cloth 978-93-82381-86-0
Jeanne Féaux de la Croix maps three iconic places as part of central Asians' "moral geographies" and examines their role in navigating socialist, neoliberal, and neo-Islamic life models. By examining how iconic places, work, and well-being can mesh together, the author moves debates about post-Soviet memory, space, and property onto fresh terrain. $40.00 / £32.95 paper 978-3-8376-3630-7 2017 270 pages 26 illus.

No Man an Island

The Cinema of Hou Hsiao-hsien Second Edition James Udden
Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-on franchise was a principal instigator in the rise of contemporary Japanese horror and its international popularity at the turn of the millennium. Following the success of Hideo Nakata’s Ringu (1998), the first cinematic release of Ju-on: The Grudge in 2002 crystallized Japanese horror’s rise to prominence and outlined the new decade’s thematic interest in supernatural technology and fear of contagions, while skillfully navigating domestic social concerns, such as Japan’s growing elderly population and domestic violence. $15.00 paper 978-1-911325-29-1
Taiwan is a peculiar place with a peculiar cinema, and Hou Hsiao-hsien is its most remarkable product. In this new edition of No Man an Island, James Udden charts a new chapter in the evolving art of Hou Hsiao-hsien, whose latest film, The Assassin, earned him the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. Hou has broken new ground in turning the classic wuxia genre into a vehicle to express his unique insight into the working of history. $35.00 / £27.95 paper 978-988-8139-2-2-4 2018 264 pages 35 illus.

Metacinema in Contemporary Chinese Film
Martial Arts Cinema and Hong Kong Modernity
Aesthetics, Representation, Circulation
G. Andrew Stuckey
Man-Fung Yip
At the core of this book is a fascinating paradox: the martial arts film, long regarded as a vehicle of Chinese cultural nationalism, can also be understood as a mass cultural expression of Hong Kong’s modern urban-industrial society. This important genre, Man-FungYip argues, articulates the experiential qualities, competing social subjectivities and gender discourses, and the heightened circulation of capital, people, goods, information, and technologies in Hong Kong of the 1960s and 1970s.
Depictions within a movie of either filmmaking or film watching are hardly novel, but the dramatic expansion of the reach of the metacinematic into contemporary Chinese cinemas is nothing short of remarkable. Metacinema also draws our attention to the presence of the audience, people actively responding to a film. In elucidating the affective responses elicited by the metacinematic mode in the viewers, G. Andrew Stuckey argues that metacinema reflects ways of being in the world that audiences may take up for themselves.

Many Shang dynasty inscribed oracle bones were found at Yinxu, Henan province. Their purpose and function shed significant light on the origin of Chinese culture, disclosing major concerns of the time. Shang oracle-bone script is the earliest known form of systematic Chinese writing, which is a crucial source for understanding the development of Chinese characters as well as the history of the Shang dynasty.
