Letter from the editors: To some, the title of George Hutchinson’s new book, Facing the Abyss, might seem apt for the times

we are living in. However, American writers and artists of the 1940s, the subject of Hutchinson’s book, confronted as wide a range of problems as we do today, from racism and social division to nuclear annihilation and existential dread. Hutchinson’s book, which offers new ways of understanding

this pivotal and frequently misunderstood decade, joins with our other books to provide global,

contemporary, and historical, and theoretical perspectives into how literature and art frame our world while also asking us to view it in new ways.

Turning from our literary past to our digital present, Roberto Simanowski’s Facebook Society, examines how algorithms and social media are determining autobiography and the potentially insidious consequences for our concept of the self. Zara Dinnen’s new book, The Digital Banal, considers how contemporary novelists such as Jennifer Egan, Colson Whitehead, and Mark Amerika depict and analyze the

everydayness of our use of digital technology as a way to recover the shrouded disturbances that can help us recognize and antagonize our media environment. The idea of the present is the subject of Theodore

Martin’s Contemporary Drift, which argues that the contemporary is not just a historical period but also a conceptual problem and that genre fiction offers a much-needed resource for resolution.

Several books consider the contexts and idea of world literature in new ways. Gloria Fisk’s Orhan

Pamuk and the Good of World Literature examines how the idea of “world literature” and the reception of the Turkish novelist have served certain purposes in the Anglophone world. Understanding world literature beyond its Western formulations is crucial to Nicolai Volland’s Socialist Cosmopolitanism,

which reads Chinese socialist literature as world literature. Our focus on the global is also reflected

in our continuing commitment to fiction in translation, including the first English translation of In

Black and White by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki and The Reincarnated Giant, a new anthology of Chinese science fiction. Our groundbreaking Russian Library series features the much-anticipated translation of writings by the acclaimed and versatile contemporary author Linor Goralik.

We are also proud to continue our translation of works by major French thinkers. This catalogue

features Roland Barthes’s Album: Unpublished Correspondence and Texts; Jacques Derrida’s Artaud the

Moma; and The Enchanted Clock: A Novel and Passions of the Times, by Julia Kristeva. These works are complemented by a range of other new exciting theoretical works including Elizabeth Grosz’s The Incorporeal: Ontology, Ethics, and the Limits of Materialism, the pathbreaking Speculative Taxidermy:

Natural History, Animal Surfaces, and Art in the Anthropocene, by Giovanni Aloi, and Stefani Engelstein’s Sibling Action: The Genealogical Structure of Modernity.

These are just some of the highlights from our literary studies list. Thank you for your continued interest in Columbia University Press books, and we hope they inspire new debates and conversation. Sincerely, Christine Dunbar, editor for Asian Humanities and literature in translation Philip Leventhal, senior editor for literary and film studies Wendy Lochner, publisher for philosophy and religion

A Novel

Julia Kristeva. Translated by Armine Kotin Mortimer

Passions of the Times showcases recent essays of Julia Kristeva’s that demonstrate her capacious intellect, her gifts as a stylist, and the profound contribution of her thought to the challenges of the present. Kristeva considers literature, translation, psychoanalysis, disability, gender, humanism, and universalism, among other topics.

Novel Sounds shows how Southern writers turned to rock music and its technologies—tape, radio, vinyl—to develop the “rock novel.” Florence Dore considers the work of writers like William Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor, and William Styron alongside Bessie Smith, Lead Belly, and Bob Dylan to uncover deep historical links between rock and literature.

During the late 1960s, throughout the 1970s, and into the 1980s, New York City poets and musicians played together, published each other, and inspired one another to create groundbreaking art. In "Do You Have a Band?", Daniel Kane reads deeply across poetry and punk music to capture this compelling exchange and its challenge.

Losing Ourselves in Sharing Ourselves

How the Need to Win Audiences Has Shaped Higher Education

Roberto Simanowski

Mark Garrett Cooper and John Marx

Translated by Susan H. Gillespie

Roberto Simanowski takes Facebook as a starting point to investigate our social-media society— and its insidious consequences for our concept of the self. Presenting a creative, philosophically informed perspective that speaks to a shared reality, Facebook Society asks us to come to terms with the networked world.

Media U presents a provocative rethinking of the development of American higher education centered on the insight that universities are media institutions. Mark Garrett Cooper and John Marx argue that the fundamental goal of the American research university has been to cultivate audiences and convince them of its value.

The Microeconomic Mode

David Foster Wallace's Balancing Books

Political Subjectivity in Contemporary Popular Aesthetics

Fictions of Value Jeffrey Severs

Jane Elliott

Literature, film, and television have become obsessed with the intersection of survival and choice. Jane Elliott analyzes this new and distinctive aesthetic phenomenon, which she calls the microeconomic mode, through close readings that show how an aesthetics of choice has reshaped contemporary understanding of what it means to be human.

Jeffrey Severs reveals David Foster Wallace to be a thoroughly political writer whose works provide an often surreal history of financial crises and economic policies. A rebellious economic thinker, Wallace satirized the deforming effects of money, questioned the logic of the monetary system, and saw the world through the lens of value’s many hidden and untapped meanings.

Étienne Balibar

Elizabeth Grosz shows that not only are idealism and materialism inextricably linked but that this “belonging together” of the entirety of ideality and the entirety of materiality is not mediated or created by human consciousness. Instead, it is an ontological condition for the development of human consciousness. In this work, Grosz proposes a new resolution of the mind-body problem that reconciles materialism and idealism.

Étienne Balibar explores the tensions between cosmopolitanism and secularism in order to advance a truly democratic and emancipatory cosmopolitanism, which requires a secularization of secularism. Going beyond circumscribed notions of religion and the public sphere, Secularism and Cosmopolitanism is a profound rethinking of identity and difference.

Queer Theory's Defiant Subjects

The Emotional Costs of Everyday Life

Mari Ruti provides an accessible yet theoretically rigorous account of the ideological divisions that have animated queer theory during the last decade, paying particular attention to the field’s rejection of dominant neoliberal narratives of success, cheerfulness, and self-actualization. Ruti analyzes the role of subjectivity, defiance, agency, and affect theory in contemporary queer theory

Mari Ruti combines theoretical reflection, cultural critique, feminist politics, and personal anecdotes to analyze the prevalence of bad feelings in everyday life. Proceeding from a playful engagement with Freud’s idea of penis envy, Ruti fans out to a broader consideration of neoliberal pragmatism and a trenchant critique of gender relations.

Integrating close readings with panoramic intellectual history, Sibling Action presents a compelling new understanding of systems of knowledge.

Giovanni Aloi maps the discourses and practices that have enabled the emergence of taxidermy in contemporary art. Aesthetics and the Absence of Emergency

SAntiAgO ZAbAlA

Santiago Zabala declares that in an age where the greatest emergency is the absence of emergency, contemporary art's ability to create new realities is fundamental to democracy. He advances a new aesthetics that draws on Martin Heidegger's distinction between works of art that rescue us from emergency and those that are rescuers into emergency.

Paolo D’Angelo traces the history of concealing art—which Italian calls sprezzatura—from ancient rhetoric to our own times. Finding the precept that art must be hidden from cosmetics to interior design, politics to poetry, the English garden to shabby chic, Sprezzatura is an erudite and surprising tour of aesthetics, philosophy, and art history.

William Logan reconciles history and poetry to provide new ways of reading poets ranging from Shakespeare and Shelley to Lowell and Heaney. In these striking essays, Logan presents the poetry of the past through the lens of the past, attempting to bring poems back to the world in which they were made.

Peter O’Leary reads a diverse set of writers to argue for the importance of religious poetry in twentieth- and twenty-first-century American literature. Susan Fraiman links terms often seen as antithetical: domestic knowledge coinciding with female masculinity, feminism, and divorce; domestic routines elaborated in the context of Victorian poverty, twentieth-century immigration, and new millennial homelessness. She demonstrates that far from being exclusively middle-class, domestic concerns are all the more urgent and ongoing when shelter is precarious. $35.00 / £27.95 cloth 978-0-231-16634-8

A Literary Ethics of Suffering Cynthia R.Wallace

The literature of Adrienne Rich, Toni Morrison, Ana Castillo, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie teaches a risky, self-giving way of reading (and being) that brings home the dangers and the possibilities of suffering as an ethical good. Examining these writers from a feminist and philosophical perspective, Cynthia R. Wallace crafts a literary ethics attentive to the paradoxes of critique and re-vision, universality and particularity, and reads in suffering a redemptive or redeemable reality.

Power Relations in Black Lives

Trauma, Language, and Subjectivity

Reading African American Literature and Culture with Bourdieu and Elias

Rhys Tranter

Edited by Christa Buschendorf

The contributions to this volume highlight the role of power relations in the black experience. By applying key concepts of Pierre Bourdieu and Norbert Elias to African American literature and culture, the authors offer new readings of power asymmetries as they are represented in the works of canonical and contemporary black writers, rap music, and figurations of political activism. $35.00 / £27.95 paper 978-3-8376-3660-4 2018 180 pages

Beckett, Lacan, and the Voice

A Theatre of Affect

Foreword by Jean-Michel Rabaté

Charlotta P. Einarsson

The Corporeal Turn in Samuel Beckett's Drama

Llewellyn Brown

The voice traverses Beckett’s work in its entirety, defining its space and its structure. Emanating from an indeterminate source situated outside the narrators and characters, while permeating the very words they utter, it proves to be incessant. In this study, Lacanian psychoanalysis offers the means to approach the voice’s multiple and fundamentally paradoxical facets with regards to language that founds the subject’s vital relation to existence.

Combining phenomenological analysis with dance and performance analysis and affect theory, Charlotta P. Einarsson takes stock of the various ways in which the body in Samuel Beckett’s drama participates in the affective ecology of performance. $45.00 / £37.95 paper 978-3-8382-1118-3 2017 302 pages

Without Jews?

Joseph Conrad and the Voicing of Textuality

Yiddish Literature in the People’s Republic of Poland on the Holocaust, Poland, and Communism

Claude Maisonnat

Magdalena Ruta

Joseph Conrad and the Voicing of Textuality offers an original approach to Conrad’s work rooted in linguistics and psychoanalytic theory. Claude Maisonnat provides fresh insight into the poetics of textuality by introducing the concept of textual voice, as opposed to the traditional conceptions of authorial voice and narrative voice.

In postwar Poland a little-known a small though dynamic center of Jewish life emerged, with creative figures who sought to revive and foster culture in their mother tongue, Yiddish. Without Jews? examines the literary output of this community of survivors, studying works created and/or published in post-war Poland to 1968.

The Mongol Conquests in the Novels of Vasily Yan

Re-forming World Literature

Katherine Mansfield and the Modernist Short Story

An Intellectual Biography Dmitry Shlapentokh

Edited by Gerri Kimber and Janet Wilson

Contributors to this volume argue that global paradigms of world literature, often referencing the major metropolitan centers of cultural and literary production, do not always accommodate voices from the margins and writing within minority genres such as the short story. Utilizing the growing reception of Katherine Mansfield’s work worldwide since her death in 1923, the volume shows how literary modernism can be read in a myriad of ways in terms of the contemporary category of new world literature.

This book is not just a biographical sketch of an important Russian/Soviet writer basically unknown to the Western public. The focus on Vasily Yan and his work also demonstrates the role of ideology in a totalitarian society. Dmitry Shlapentokh shows that ideology and cultural and intellectual life in totalitarian regimes are more complex than is often assumed. Intellectuals often engaging in stressful, but—in its literary outcome—captivating “cat and mouse” games with censors, the powerful, and the government.

Aging in Slavic Literatures

Postirony

Edited by Dagmar Gramshammer-Hohl

Lukas Hoffmann

The Nonfictional Literature of David Foster Wallace and Dave Eggers

Essays in Literary Gerontology

In Slavic studies, aging and old age have thus far been only marginal concerns. This volume brings together the scattered research that has been done up to now on aging as represented and narrated in Slavic literatures. The essays investigate Bosnian/ Croatian/Serbian, Polish, Russian, Slovak, Slovene, and Ukrainian representations of age and aging in various literary genres and epochs and analyze age as a powerful marker of difference and as constitutive of social relations and personal identity

Postirony is a response to the ironic zeitgeist. Moreover, it is the key to understanding a specific form of literature—ironic, self-reflexive metafiction. Despite the reign of contemporary irony, authors like David Foster Wallace and Dave Eggers choose a different path: they strive to reach the reader cognitively as well as emotionaly in a way they claim to be sincere and true. Focusing largely on nonfiction by these authors, Lukas Hoffmann explores the means the texts use to achieve a new form of sincerity.

Sentimental Tales

Redemption

Translated by Boris Dralyuk

Translated by Andrew Bromfield

Mikhail Zoshchenko

Friedrich Gorenstein

Mikhail Zoshchenko’s Sentimental Tales are satirical portraits of small-town characters on the fringes of Soviet society in the first decade of Bolshevik rule. An original perspective on Soviet life and uproariously funny, Sentimental Tales at last shows Anglophone readers why Zoshchenko is considered among the greatest humorists of the Soviet era.

Friedrich Gorenstein’s Redemption is a stark and powerful portrait of humanity caught up in Stalin’s police state in the aftermath of World War II. A major work bearing witness to the Holocaust in the Soviet Union, Redemption is an important reckoning with anti-Semitism and Stalinist repression from a significant Soviet Jewish voice.

Sisters of the Cross

Found Life

Alexei Remizov

Poems, Stories, Comics, a Play, and an Interview

Translated by Roger Keys and Brian Murphy

Linor Goralik. Edited by Ainsley Morse, Maria Vassileva, and Maya Vinokour

The first English translation of this remarkable 1910 novel by Alexei Remizov, Sisters of the Cross is a masterpiece of early modernist fiction. It tells the story of a poor clerk who rebels against the suffering and humiliation afflicting his own life and the women he encounters in the tenement building where he lives in Petersburg.

One of the first Russian writers to make a name for herself on the Internet, Linor Goralik writes conversational short works that conjure the absurd, reflecting post-Soviet life and daily universals. Her mastery of the minimal is on full display in this collection of poems, stories, comics, a play, and an interview, translated for the first time.

A Literary Analysis of Urban Narratives

A Literary Analysis of Urban Narratives presents an interdisciplinary framework that addresses concerns and questions of epistemology, the sociology of knowledge, and urban and documentary studies. Prachi More describes how these narratives function as sites of knowledge production, particularly in light of the development of historiography and empirical documentation since modernism.

The present essays range widely across Orhan Pamuk’s novelistic oeuvre, dealing with how the writer, often adding an allegorical level to the personages depicted in his experimental narratives, portrays tensions such as those between Western secularism and traditional Islam and different conceptions of national identity.

Essays on the Essay Film

The Essay Film After Fact and Fiction

Edited by Nora M. Alter and Timothy Corrigan

Nora M. Alter

This anthology of fundamental statements on the essay film offers a range of crucial historical and philosophical perspectives. It provides early critical articulations of the essay film as it evolved through the 1950s and 1960s, key contemporary scholarly essays, and a selection of writings by essay filmmakers.

Nora M. Alter reveals the essay film to be a hybrid genre that fuses the categories of feature, art, and documentary film. The essay film draws on a variety of forms and approaches; in the process, it fundamentally alters the shape of cinema. The Essay Film After Fact and Fiction locates the genre’s origins and follows its transformations.

Show Trial

Performing Authorship

Hollywood, HUAC, and the Birth of the Blacklist

Gian Maria Annovi

Thomas Doherty

In Pier Paolo Pasolini: Performing Authorship, Gian Maria Annovi revisits Pasolini’s oeuvre to examine the author’s performance as a way of assuming an antagonistic stance toward forms of artistic, social, and cultural oppression. Annovi connects Pasolini’s notion of authorship to contemporary radical artistic practices and today’s multimedia authorship.

Thomas Doherty tells the story of the 1947 hearings into alleged Communist subversion in the movie industry. Show Trial is a character-driven inquiry into how the HUAC hearings ignited the Hollywood blacklist, providing a gripping new history of one of the most influential events of the postwar era.

Melodrama Unbound

Specters of Slapstick and Silent Film Comediennes

Edited by Christine Gledhill and Linda Williams

Maggie Hennefeld

Across History, Media, and National Cultures

Drawing on new scholarship in transnational theatrical, film, and cultural histories, this collection demonstrates that melodrama speaks to fundamental aspects of modern life and feeling. Contributors articulate new ways of thinking about melodrama that underscore its pervasiveness across national cultures and in a variety of genres. $40.00 / £32.95 paper 978-0-231-18067$120.00 / £99.95 cloth 978-0-231-18066-5

Specters of Slapstick and Silent Film Comediennes offers close consideration of hundreds of silent films. Maggie Hennefeld argues that these films provide disturbing but suggestive images for comprehending gendered social upheavals in the early twentieth century and that slapstick comediennes were crucial to the emergence of film language and experimentation with the visual and social potentials of cinema.

Mythopoetic Cinema

Words on Screen

On the Ruins of European Identity

Michel Chion Edited and translated by Claudia Gorbman

Kriss Ravetto-Biagioli

Kriss Ravetto-Biagioli explores how contemporary European filmmakers treat mythopoetics as a critical practice that questions the constant need to provide new identities, a new Europe, and with it a new European cinema. Examining the work of Jean-Luc Godard, Alexander Sokurov, Marina Abramović, and Theodoros Angelopoulos, RavettoBiagioli argues that these disparate artists provide a critical reflection on what constitutes Europe in the age of neoliberalism.

Following his work on sound in film in Audio-Vision and Film, a Sound Art, Words on Screen is Chion’s survey of everything the seventh art gives us to read on screen. He analyzes titles, credits, and intertitles, but also less obvious forms of writing that appear on screen, from the tear-stained letter in a character’s hand to reversed writing seen in mirrors. Through this examination, Chion delves into the multitude of roles that words on screen play.

How Did Lubitsch Do It?

Studying Shakespeare on Film

Joseph McBride

Joseph McBride analyzes Lubitsch’s films in rich detail in the first in-depth critical study to consider the full scope of his work and its evolution in both Hollywood and Germany. McBride explains the “Lubitsch Touch” and shows how the director challenged American attitudes toward romance and sex. McBride’s analysis brings to life Lubitsch’s inventiveness and offers revealing insights into his working methods.

Rebekah Owens

Aimed at newcomers to literature and film, this book is a guide for the analysis of Shakespeare on film. Starting with an introduction to the main challenge faced by any director—the early-modern language—it presents case studies of the twelve films most often used in classroom teaching, including Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and

The Tempest.

After Uniqueness traces the ambivalence of reproducibility through the intersecting histories of experimental cinema and the moving image in art, examining how artists, filmmakers, and theorists have found in the copy a utopian promise or a dangerous inauthenticity—or both at once. $35.00 / £27.95 paper 978-0-231-17693-4 $105.00 / £87.95 cloth 978-0-231-17692-7 2017 312 pages 27 illus.

Have digital technologies transformed cinema into a new art, or do they simply replicate and mimic analogue, film-based cinema? Newly revised and expanded to take the latest developments into account, Cinema in the Digital Age examines the fate of cinema in the wake of the digital revolution. Rombes examines how certain digital films are interested not in digital purity but rather in imperfection and mistakes that remind viewers of the human behind the camera. $30.00 / £24.95 paper 978-0-231-16755-0 $90.00 / £74.95 cloth 978-0-231-16754-3 2017 280 pages
