Letter from the Philosophy Editor: It is with great pleasure that I present the Columbia University Press philosophy catalog for 2018. These books, which span subjects from aesthetics to ethics, critical life studies, Asian studies, philosophy of religion, and critical and political theory, reflect the interdisciplinary and global approach of our list and exemplify the quality of scholarship that we value. Among the many outstanding titles in this year’s wide-ranging catalog several deserve special notice. We are especially proud to present titles from Roland Barthes, Album, which collects unpublished correspondence beginning in his adolescence and sanatorium years, and from Jacques Derrida, Artaud the Moma, his controversial Museum of Modern Art talk on Antonin Artaud. Alain Badiou and Barbara Cassin return with the provocatively titled There’s No Such Thing as a Sexual Relationship, which inhabits Lacan’s essay L’Etourdit and scours it for insights on knowledge and truth. And Elizabeth Grosz gives us her groundbreaking The Incorporeal, which proposes an entirely new way to think about the new materialisms. Other innovative projects include several titles in the areas of critical life studies, environmental humanities, and LGBTQ studies. Speculative Taxidermy by Giovanni Aloi views the nonhuman turn through the lens of natural history and art in the Anthropocene. Foucault’s Futures by Penelope Deutscher examines the biopolitics of reproduction. Energy Dreams by Michael Marder is a surprising look at what energy actually is and does, an original account that challenges our assumptions about its negative environmental impacts. The collection Extinction Studies, edited by Deborah Bird Rose, Thom van Dooren, and Matthew Chrulew, introduces a new field through evocative narrative, rich ethnography, and insightful historiography. And The Ethics of Opting Out by Mari Ruti offers a new theoretical agenda that revitalizes the field by bringing together the contentious divisions that have long defined it. Finally, we are delighted to highlight our flagship Asian titles. Taking Back Philosophy by Bryan van Norden is a lively, passionate, and powerful plea for the discipline’s global traditions, and Hans-Georg Moeller’s and Paul D’Ambrosio’s subtle and witty Genuine Pretending shows a Zhuangzi that you have never seen before. I am sure that you will find much to enjoy and ponder in these pages. I, and my colleagues at Columbia University Press, look forward to continuing our dialogue. "The significance of this book—the first English-language publication of Barthes's correspondence—cannot be overestimated. Starting with Barthes's adolescence and the years in his late twenties spent in a sanatorium, these selected letters represent exchanges with longtime personal friends as well as many of the key figures of twentiethcentury French intellectual history." —Diana Knight, University of Nottingham $35.00 / £27.95 cloth 978-0-231-179867-7 January 2018 320 pages

"A remarkable and groundbreaking work, The Incorporeal intensifies Grosz's already complex and nuanced account of bodies and difference: incorporeality is not to be equated with mind, ideality or the disembodied. It is, rather, part of the volatility that Grosz has always discerned in bodies, human and nonhuman."

EDITED BY
Andrew J. Mitchell and Peter Trawny
In spite of Heidegger’s explicit anti-Semitic statements, Elliot R. Wolfson reveals some crucial aspects of his thinking—including criticism of the biological racism and militant apocalypticism of Nazism—that betray an affinity with dimensions of Jewish thought: the triangulation of the concepts of homeland, language, and peoplehood; Jewish messianism and the notion of historical time as the return of the same that is always different; inclusion, exclusion, and the status of the other; the problem of evil in kabbalistic symbolism. $30.00 / £25.00 paper 978-0-231-185639 $90.00 / £75.00 cloth 978-0-231-18562-2 May 2018 336 pages
“There can be no last word on Heidegger’s Black Notebooks and the incomprehensible and unjustifiable positions of one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century. Only a collective, plurivocal approach can help us read what is illegible. “Short, clear, and powerful. It succinctly overcomes the deadlock between pro- and antiHeideggerians embedded in the debate about his Nazism while shedding light on the intimate, subtle connections between Heidegger's fundamental ontology and his relations (both intellectual and amorous) with women." —Adrian Johnston, coauthor of Self and Emotional Life: Philosophy, Psychoanalysis, and Neuroscience $20.00 / £14.95 paper 978-0-231-15797-1 $60.00 / £49.95 cloth 978-0-231-15796-4

Paolo D'Angelo
Edited by Olivia Custer, Penelope Deutscher, and Samir Haddad
$105.00 / £87.95 cloth 978-0-231-17194-6
In this book, the first to consider sprezzatura in its own right, philosopher of art Paolo D’Angelo reconstructs the history of concealing art, from ancient rhetoric to our own times. The precept that art must be hidden turns up in a number of fields, from cosmetics to interior design, politics to poetry, the English garden to shabby chic. Through exploring different articulations of this idea, D’Angelo shows the paradox of aesthetics: art hides that it is art, but in doing so it reveals itself to be art and becomes an assertion about art.

Aesthetics and the Absence of Emergency
Schopenhauer, Beckett and the Aesthetics of Irreducibility
Santiago Zabala
Anthony Barron Foreword by Matthew Feldman
"Zabala's extraordinary book strikes at the very heart of our spiritual predicament. From austerity politics to security measures, everything is legitimized with the axiom that we live in a state of emergency. The first task of the critique of ideology today is thus to dispel this myth of emergency—something that Zabala does brilliantly, combining theoretical stringency with immense readability." —Slavoj Žižek, author of Less Than Nothing and Absolute Recoil
Using Schopenhauer's thought as a presiding interpretative framework, Anthony Barron demonstrates how the widespread presence of philosophical and theological ideas in Samuel Beckett's creative texts signifies less about his personal convictions than it does about his authorial aims. He thereby highlights the ways in which discursive ideas were appropriated and manipulated by Beckett for purely literary ends. $50.00 paper 978-3-8382-1125-1 2017 450 pages IBIDEM PRESS

From the Absurd to Revolt Dynamics in Albert Camus's Thought
Adorno's Theory of Philosophical and Aesthetic Truth Owen Hulatt
Edited by Piotr Mróz and Maciej Kałuża
This book presents essays devoted to two key issues of Albert Camus thought: absurdity and rebellion. Contributors explore the problem of transition in Camus's The Rebel from philosophical considerations over the absurd in the human condition to the attitude of rebellion. In addition there is analysis of The Outsider, Camus's rebellion from the perspective of contemporary humanities, and comparative studies between Camus, Dostoyevsky, Kolakowski, and Iwaszkiewicz.
"There is no other book that more lucidly and compellingly reconstructs the difficult relationship between epistemology and aesthetics in Adorno's work.... For anyone interested in the status and fate of art in modernity, this book will be a landmark."—Espen Hammer, author of Adorno's Modernism: Art, Experience, and Catastrophe $60.00 / £49.95 cloth 978-0-231-17724-5 2016 272 pages

God and the Mathematics of Infinity
Reflections on Transience
What Irreducible Mathematics Says about Godhood
Raymond Tallis
H. Chris Ransford Raymond Tallis seeks to find a place at which the scientific and humanistic views of humanity can be reconciled. By placing human consciousness at the heart of time, he shows that we are "more than cogs in the universal clock, forced to collaborate with the very progress that pushes us towards our own midnight." Tallis believes our temporal lives deserve a richer attention than is afforded by the equations of mathematical physics.
Using mathematics, H. Chris Ransford addresses humankind's abiding core debate on the meaning of spirituality and God. He explores key questions in this debate including why does evil exist if there is a God? Ranford follows allowable mathematics wherever it leads without taking sides or proffering opinions.

Folding as a material and structural process offers a new methodology to think about the close relationship of matter, form, and code. It undoes old dichotomies, such as the organic and the inorganic or nature and technology, and blurs the boundaries between experimental, conceptual, and historical approaches. This anthology explores this new interdisciplinary field and its disciplinary impact, ranging from materials science, biology, architecture, and mathematics to literature and philosophy. $35.00 paper 978-3-8376-3404-4 2016 180 pages TRANSCRIPT-VERLAG 10

Jonathan K. Crane
“An accomplished ethicist and philosopher, Crane crafts a careful argument for what it means to eat well. Following a trajectory set by Michael Pollan and others, Eating Ethically is set apart by its interdisciplinarity, using biblical scholarship, nutritional science, biochemistry, and medicine to effectively buttress the idea that eating is an activity that resonates in both personal and social contexts." —Benjamin Zeller, coeditor of Religion, Food, and Eating in North America $35.00 / £27.95 cloth 978-0-231-17344-5 2017 256 pages
Kitchen, cooking, nutrition, and eating have become omnipresent cultural topics. Artists have appropriated cooking as an aesthetic practice – in turn, cooks are adapting the staging practices that go with an artistic selfimage. This development is accompanied by a philosophy of cooking as a speculative cultural technique. This volume investigates the dimensions of a new "culinary turn," combining for the very first time contributions from the theory and practice of cooking. $40.00 paper 978-3-8376-3031-2 2017 350 pages TRANSCRIPT-VERLAG

“The Ethics of Opting Out makes an unprecedented and unparalleled intervention into the field of queer theory. Ruti brings her profound expertise in both Lacanian theory and Foucauldian thought to the project, and it enables her to write a book that transcends the division that has hitherto defined the field. The Habermas Handbook
Critical Theory in Critical Times Transforming the Global Political and Economic Order
Edited by Hauke Brunkhorst, Regina Kreide, and Cristina Lafont
"A global, comprehensive one-stop volume—truly a handbook—for anyone working seriously with Habermas."—Max Pensky, Binghamton University
Edited by Penelope Deutscher and Cristina Lafont
"This volume is, and will likely remain for the indefinite future, the most definitive and exhaustive scholarly compendium on Habermas's life work. An astoundingly comprehensive study of virtually every detail of Habermas's thought spanning disciplines."
“This excellent collection of essays shows that we have to rethink the core concepts and scope of critical theory in light of contemporary challenges to democracy, human rights, and socioeconomic justice posed by neoliberal forms of globalization and by critical theory's own insufficient attention to colonialism and postcolonialism.... A must-read for anyone interested in progressive social change."

Edited by Mariano Féliz and Aaron Louis Rosenberg THE RADICAL POLITICS OF ENVIRONMENTALISM
Providing new insights into the limitations of traditional strategies to confront poverty, contributors highlight how social organizations are working to transform the livelihoods of people through bottom-up struggle and more participatory approaches rather than passively waiting for top-down solutions. $45.00 paper 978-3-8382-1044-5 2017 340 pages IBIDEM PRESS
"Adrian Parr...does not simply argue that capitalism, neoliberalism, and militarism are incompatible with environmental concerns but also provides concrete examples of how to overcome this incompatibility, which is the cause of our greatest natural, political, and social emergencies. Everyday Economics
Planning for Crisis Strategy and Management Theory and the Impact of Economic Uncertainty
A User's Guide to the Modern Economy Steve Coulter
Carol M. Connell
By placing the individual front and center in his analysis, Steve Coulter is able to demonstrate how the things we experience, need, and consume fit into the fast-changing and interdependent global economic setting. Coulter shows the role of government, markets, and welfare in shaping our lives, and builds on the latest economic research and data to provide an overview of the workings of the economy that takes as its starting point the interface between the individual and the system overall.
Carol M. Connell investigates how theorists have used the economic recessions that defined their time to inform strategies for institutional management and growth in times of crisis. She shows that the postwar period saw an ever-growing body of research and theory from economics, the behavioral and social sciences, finance and business management, devoted to avoiding or limiting the effects, at the organizational level, of such economic downturns.

The Market
The Genealogy of the Liberal Economy and the Displacement of Politics
Matthew Watson
Ute Tellmann
"A fascinating and intricately argued study that redescribes significant moments in the development of economics not just as 'discoveries' but as moments in which the very nature of the economic and the political is reconstituted." —Stephen J. Collier, The New School
Complementing Michel Foucault’s influential account of liberal governmentality, Life and Money opens up liberalism, including our neoliberal present, to a new sense of economic and political possibility.
14
We’ve become accustomed to economists and politicians talking about “market forces” as if they are immutable laws of the universe. But what exactly is “the market”? Matt Watson unpacks the concept to ask what does it really mean to allow ourselves to submit to market forces. And does economic theory really provide insights into the market institutions that shape our everyday life? In tackling these questions, the book challenges the idea that we can simply defer to the “logic of the market.”

Reflections on the Future of the Left
Left-Wing Melancholia
Edited by David Coates
Marxism, History, and Memory Enzo Traverso
These essays from leading left intellectuals—Dean Baker, Fred Block, David Coates, Hillary Wainwright, Colin Crouch, Wolfgang Streeck, and Leo Panitch—reflect on the scale and nature of the task that the Left now faces. Akin to The Forward March of Labour Halted published some thirty years ago, these essays represent a major statement on the future for center-left politics and a frank appraisal of the Left's current capabilities to keep conservatism at bay and radical politics in the ascendancy. $25.00 paper 978-1-911116-52-3 2017 224 pages
"A pathbreaking work that combines history and political theory with a concise, richly analytical, exciting narrative. Enzo Traverso redefines our understanding of the current regimes of temporality—a sorrowful transition from the twentieth to the twenty-first century—and challenges historians and critical theorists alike to think beyond the standard binaries between history and memory, revolution and defeat, and melancholy and politics. In other words, this book is a gem."—Federico Finchelstein, The New School for Social Research $35.00 / £27.95 cloth 978-0-231179423 2017 312 pages

The Hungarian Far Right Social Demand, Political Supply, and International Context
A Guide to Archives Archie Henderson
Péter Krekó and Attila Juhász This volume contains a detailed overview of primary sources housed in more than 2,400 archives across twenty countries. It includes personal and institutional papers; archives of right-wing periodicals in Japanese, Romanian, and Russian; pamphlets, ephemera, vertical files, and press cuttings; oral histories; libraryaccessible commercial databases; digitized collections and exhibitions; archived websites; and microfilm and microfiche of right-wing materials. $136.00 cloth 978-3-8382-0725-4 2017 800 pages
In this book, the authors analyze the story of Jobbik (and Fidesz), contemporary players of the Hungarian radical right scene, not as separate case studies, but as representatives of broader international political trends. They argue that far-right parties such as Jobbik (and increasingly Fidesz) are not pathologic and extraordinary, but exaggerated, seemingly pathological manifestations of normal, mainstream politics. $40.00 paper 978-3-8382-1184-8 2017 260 pages IBIDEM PRESS

"This book sounds the loudest warning yet that the current seduction to considering racism as implicit bias can dangerously undermine longfought attempts to better understand the structural sources of racial inequality. Little irony is lost in suggesting that twenty-first century neuroscience has enabled a reincarnation of the early twentieth-century conception of race in America, a view that an analysis of discrimination can be reduced to individuals’ personal bias."—Troy Duster, University of California, Berkeley $35.00 / £27.95 cloth 978-0-231-18424-3 2017 304 pages

"How can something singular, in all the depths of its singularity, communicate with the universal, with the result that the singular is not contracted to itself and the universal is not a free floating abstraction? William Desmond explores this basic question in all its dimensions in the steady, systematic and meticulous manner we have come to expect from him in this not to be missed new volume." —John D.
