Letter from the editors:

Nancy Miller’s My Brilliant Friends: Our Lives in Feminism offers a group biography of three women— Carolyn Heilbrun, Diane Middlebrook, and Naomi Schor—whose lives exemplified the intersection of

the literary, the personal, and the political. With this in mind, we are very excited to share with you our list of new titles in literary criticism and theory, which examine the multiple ways in which literature and critical thought reflect, define, and alter our world.

Florence Dore’s Novel Sounds: Southern Fiction in the Age of Rock and Roll considers the cultural and

aesthetic links between such figures as Lead Belly and Faulkner, Bob Dylan and Flannery O’Connor. And what of those interactions that don’t quite mesh? Nan Da’s Intransitive Encounters considers the limitations of exchanges between China and the United States and what they mean for the study of

transnational literature. The concept of cultural difference is also the subject of Peter Morey’s powerful Islamophobia and the Novel, which examines how contemporary writers have challenged assumptions regarding the novel’s potential for empathy.

The interaction among technology, literature, society, and the personal is given two distinct treatments

in Media U: How the Need to Win Audiences Has Shaped Higher Education, by Mark Garrett Cooper and John Marx, and Roberto Simanowski’s Facebook Society: Losing Ourselves in Sharing Ourselves.

We continue our commitment to translation of works by major European thinkers with Paul Precadio’s eagerly anticipated performative literary text, Countersexual Manifesto; Alexandre Kojève’s Atheism, his

previously untranslated meditation on freedom and authority; and Alain Badiou’s compelling account of Lacan’s theory and therapeutic practice in the aptly titled Lacan.

For a more contemporary account of psychoanalysis there is Jamieson Webster’s much-talked-about Conversion Disorder: Listening to the Body in Psychoanalysis. Her book complements a range of new

exciting theoretical works, including The Perils of the One by Stathis Gourouris; Mari Ruti’s Penis Envy: The Emotional Costs of Everyday Life; and Afro-Dog: Blackness and the Animal Question, by Bénédicte Boisseron. Turning to global literature, Hamid Dabashi’s The Shahnameh provides a critical and passionate account

of the great Persian epic and offers a challenge to dominant ideas of world literature. New cutting-edge scholarly and critical works on East Asian fiction and poetry are joined by an exciting new slate of

literature in translation, including The Reincarnated Giant: An Anthology of Twenty-First-Century Chinese Science Fiction. Finally, our award-winning translations of Russian literature offer a host of rewards to

readers, beginning with such books as The Man Who Couldn’t Die: The Tale of an Authentic Human Being, by Olga Slavnikova and translated by Marian Schwartz

These are just some of the highlights from our literary studies list. Thank you for your continued interest in Columbia University Press books. Sincerely, Philip Leventhal, senior editor for literary and film studies Christine Dunbar, editor for Asian Humanities and literature in translation Wendy Lochner, publisher for philosophy and religion

Nancy K. Miller describes her friendships with three well-known scholars and literary critics: Carolyn Heilbrun, Diane Middlebrook, and Naomi Schor. Their relationships were simultaneously intimate and professional, emotional and intellectual, animated by the ferment of the women’s movement. Reflecting on aging and loss, ambition and rivalry, competition and collaboration, Miller shows why and how friendship’s ties matter in the worlds of work and love. $28.00 / £22.00 cloth 978-0-231-19054-1 2019 232 pages

Unpublished Correspondence and Texts

A Life of Alexandre Kojève Jeff Love

Roland Barthes

Translated by Jody Gladding

Jeff Love reinterprets Alexandre Kojève’s works, showing him to be a provocative thinker who challenged modernity's valuation of self-interest. Joining intellectual history, close textual analysis, and philosophy, The Black Circle reveals Kojève’s thought as a profound critique of capitalist individualism and a timely meditation on human freedom.

Album provides an unparalleled look into Roland Barthes's life of letters. It presents a selection of correspondence from his adolescence through the last years of his life. The first English-language publication of Barthes's letters, Album is a comprehensive testimony to one of the most influential critics of the twentieth century.

Introduction by Kenneth Reinhard

One of the twentieth century’s most brilliant and unconventional thinkers, Alexandre Kojève was a Russian émigré to France whose lectures on Hegel in the 1930s galvanized a generation of French intellectuals. Atheism is an erudite and open-ended exploration of profound questions of estrangement, death, suicide, and the infinite that demonstrates the range and the provocative power of Alexandre Kojève’s thought. $32.00 / £25.00 cloth 978-0-231-18000-9

A Novel

Julia Kristeva

Julia Kristeva

Edited with a foreword by Lawrence D. Kritzman

Translated by Armine Kotin Mortimer

Passions of Our Time showcases Julia Kristeva’s recent essays, demonstrating her capacious intellect, her gifts as a stylist, and the profound contribution of her thought to the challenges of the present. Kristeva considers literature, translation, psychoanalysis, disability, gender, humanism, and universalism, among other topics.

Julia Kristeva’s intricate, multifaceted novel The Enchanted Clock is built around a golden astronomical clock in the Palace of Versailles. Part detective mystery, part historical fiction, and full of ruminations on memory, love, and the transcendence of linear time, it is one of the most illuminating works by one of France’s great thinkers.

American Literature and Culture in the 1940s

Southern Fiction in the Age of Rock and Roll

George Hutchinson challenges the mythology of the “good war” and the “Greatest Generation” to provide a new understanding of the 1940s as a pivotal decade in modern American life. He argues that writers and artists probed the darkness that the war opened up and confronted bigotry, sexism, existential guilt, ecological concerns, and fear about the nature and survival of the human race.

Novel Sounds shows how Southern writers turned to rock music and its technologies—tape, radio, vinyl—to develop the “rock novel.” Florence Dore considers the work of writers like William Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor, and William Styron alongside Bessie Smith, Lead Belly, and Bob Dylan to uncover deep historical links between rock and literature.

During the late 1960s, throughout the 1970s, and into the 1980s, New York City poets and musicians played together, published each other, and inspired one another to create groundbreaking art. In “Do You Have a Band?” Daniel Kane reads deeply across poetry and punk music to capture this compelling exchange and its challenge.

Zara Dinnen analyzes a range of contemporary novels, films, and artworks to contend that we live in the condition of the “digital banal,” not noticing the affective and political novelty of our relationship to digital media. The Digital Banal recovers the shrouded disturbances that can help us recognize and antagonize our media environment.

Losing Ourselves in Sharing Ourselves

How the Need to Win Audiences Has Shaped Higher Education

Roberto Simanowski

Mark Garrett Cooper and John Marx

Translated by Susan H. Gillespie

Roberto Simanowski takes Facebook as a starting point to investigate our social-media society— and its insidious consequences for our concept of the self. Presenting a creative, philosophically informed perspective that speaks to a shared reality, Facebook Society asks us to come to terms with the networked world.

Media U presents a provocative rethinking of the development of American higher education centered on the insight that universities are media institutions. Mark Garrett Cooper and John Marx argue that the fundamental goal of the American research university has been to cultivate audiences and convince them of its value.

Listening to the Body in Psychoanalysis

The Emotional Costs of Everyday Life

Jamieson Webster

Mari Ruti

Mari Ruti combines theoretical reflection, cultural critique, feminist politics, and personal anecdotes to analyze the prevalence of bad feelings in everyday life. Proceeding from a playful engagement with Freud’s idea of penis envy, Ruti fans out to a broader consideration of neoliberal pragmatism and a trenchant critique of gender relations.

Part memoir, part clinical case, part theoretical investigation, this book searches for the body. Jamieson Webster traces conversion’s shifting meanings in an intimate account of her own conversion from patient to psychoanalyst, as well as her continual struggle to apprehend the complexities of the patient’s body.

The Microeconomic Mode

Show Trials, Political Theater, and the Aesthetics of Judgment

Political Subjectivity in Contemporary Popular Aesthetics

Minou Arjomand

Jane Elliott

Literature, film, and television have become obsessed with the intersection of survival and choice. Jane Elliott analyzes this new and distinctive aesthetic phenomenon, which she calls the microeconomic mode, through close readings that show how an aesthetics of choice has reshaped contemporary understanding of what it means to be human.

Linking performance with theories of aesthetics, history, and politics, Minou Arjomand argues that it is not subject matter that makes theater political but rather the act of judging a performance in the company of others. Staged weaves together theater history and political philosophy into a powerful and timely case for the importance of theaters as public institutions.

The Shahnameh

Postcolonial Theory

The Persian Epic as World Literature

A Critical Introduction Second Edition

Hamid Dabashi

Leela Gandhi

The Shahnameh, an epic poem recounting the foundation of Iran across mythical, heroic, and historical ages, is the beating heart of Persian literature and culture. Completed by Abu al-Qasem Ferdowsi in the year 1010, the epic has entertained generations of readers and profoundly shaped Persian culture, society, and politics. Hamid Dabashi insightfully traces the epic’s history, authorship, poetic significance, complicated legacy of political uses and abuses, and enduring significance in colonial and postcolonial contexts.

Published twenty years ago, Leela Gandhi’s Postcolonial Theory was a landmark description of the field of postcolonial studies in theoretical terms that set its intellectual context alongside poststructuralism, postmodernism, Marxism, and feminism. In this revised edition, Gandhi examines recent alliances with critical race theory and Africanist postcolonialism, considers challenges from postsecular and postcritical perspectives, and takes into account the ontological, environmental, affective, and ethical turns in the changed landscape of critical theory.

The Perils of the One

Foucault’s Futures

A Critique of Reproductive Reason

Stathis Gourgouris

Penelope Deutscher

From the earliest times, societies have been seduced by the temptation of unitary thinking. In The Perils of the One, Stathis Gourgouris offers a philosophical anthropology that confronts the legacy of “monarchical thinking”: the desire to subjugate oneself to unitary principles and structures, whether political or moral, theological or secular. Gourgouris reads across politics and theology, literary and art criticism, psychoanalysis and feminism in a critique of both political theology and the metaphysics of secularism.

By analyzing Foucault’s contribution to the politics of maternity and its influence on the work of thinkers such as Roberto Esposito, Giorgio Agamben, and Judith Butler, Penelope Deutscher provides new insights into the conflicted political status of reproductive conduct and what it means for feminism and critical theory. $30.00 / £24.00 paper 978-0-231-17641-5 $90.00 / £70.00 paper 978-0-231-17640-8 2017 280 pages

The Future as Catastrophe offers a novel critique of the modern fascination with disaster from Romanticism to end-of-the-world blockbusters. Eva Horn argues that apocalypse always haunts the modern idea of a future that can be anticipated and planned.

The Life of Imagination delivers a new conception of imagination that places it at the heart of our engagement with the world—thinking, acting, feeling, making, and being. Critical Theory at a Crossroads

Conversations on Resistance in Times of Crisis

C. Heike Schotten

Edited by Stijn De Cauwer

Critical Theory at a Crossroads presents conversations with prominent theorists about the crises that have marked the past years, the protest movements that have risen up in response, and the use of the term “crisis” in political discourse. Contributors spar over crucial developments in these past years of catastrophe and the calamity of everyday life under capitalism, and ultimately shed light on how crises and the discourse of crisis can both obscure and reveal fundamental aspects of modern societies.

After September 11, 2001, George W. Bush declared, “Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists.” Bush’s assertion encapsulates the civilizationalist moralism that has always motivated and defined the United States, linking the War on Terror to the nation’s settlement and founding. C. Heike Schotten provides an anatomy of this moralism, arguing for a new interpretation of biopolitics focused on sovereignty and desire rather than racism and biology.

This book explores the distinctive ways in which twentieth-century and contemporary continental thinkers have engaged with poetry and its contribution to philosophical meaning making, challenging us to rethink how philosophy has been changed through its encounters with poetry. In wide-ranging reflections on thinkers such as Heidegger, Gadamer, Arendt, Lacan, Deleuze, Irigaray, Badiou, and Agamben, among others, distinguished contributors consider how continental philosophers constructed their versions of the philosophy-poetry dialectic. $75.00 / £58.00 cloth 978-0-231-18738-1 May 2019 352 pages

Amos Reichman

A Publisher in Exile, from Pléiade to Pantheon

The War Journals, 1941–1945 Foreword by Elliot Neaman Translated by Thomas S. Hansen and Abby J. Hansen

Foreword by Robert O. Paxton Translated by Sandra Smith

Ernst Jünger was one of twentieth-century Germany’s most important—and most controversial—writers. Decorated for bravery in World War I and the author of the acclaimed western front memoir Storm of Steel, he frankly depicted war’s horrors even as he extolled its glories. As a Wehrmacht captain during World War II, Jünger kept a journal in occupied Paris and continued to write on the eastern front and in Germany until its defeat—writings that are of major historical and literary significance.

Jacques Schiffrin changed the face of publishing in the twentieth century. As the founder of Pléiade Editions in Paris and cofounder of Pantheon Books in New York, he helped define a lasting canon of Western literature while also promoting new authors who shaped transatlantic intellectual life. In this first biography of Schiffrin, Amos Reichman tells the story of a great publisher and his travails across two continents.

Giovanni Aloi maps the discourses and practices that have enabled the emergence of taxidermy in contemporary art. CRITICAL LIFE STUDIES

In Afro-Dog, Bénédicte Boisseron investigates the relationship between race and the animal in the history and culture of the Americas and the black Atlantic, exposing a hegemonic system that compulsively links and opposes blackness and animality to measure the value of life. Drawing on recent debates on black lives and animal welfare, Afro-Dog reframes the human–animal relationships by positioning blackness as a focus of animal inquiry, opening new possibilities for animal studies and black studies to think side by side. $30.00 / £24.00 paper 978-0-231-18665-0 $90.00 / £70.00 cloth 978-0-231-18664-3 2018 320 pages

Women’s Political Labor and the Fabrication of East Bengal

Modernist Lesbian Romance Hannah Roche

Poulomi Saha

Poulomi Saha offers an innovative account of women’s political labor in East Bengal over more than a century that suggests new ways to think about textiles and the gendered labors of their making. Her analysis of the production of historical memory through and by the bodies of women spans British colonialism and American empire, anticolonial nationalism to neoliberal globalization, depicting East Bengal between development economics and postcolonial studies.

In a lecture delivered before Oxford University’s Anglo-French Society in 1936, Gertrude Stein described romance as “the outside thing, that . . . is always a thing to be felt inside.” Hannah Roche takes Stein’s definition as a principle for the reinterpretation of three major modern lesbian writers, showing how literary and affective romance played a crucial yet overlooked role in the works of Stein, Radclyffe Hall, and Djuna Barnes.

Gender in Focus

British White Trash

Identities, Codes, Stereotypes, and Politics

Figurations of Tainted Whiteness in the Novels of Irvine Welsh, Niall Griffiths, and John King

Edited by Andreea Zamfira, Christian de Montlibert, and Daniela Radul

Mark Schmitt

This book is about the interplay among identities, codes, stereotypes, and politics governing the various constructions and deconstructions of gender in several Western and non-western societies, including Germany, Italy, Serbia, Romania, Cameroon, Indonesia, Vietnam, and others. Contributors examine gender studies in light of the transformative potentialities of globalization and interculturality.

British White Trash is the first analysis to comprehensively examine the adaptation of the “white trash” stereotype in major British novels. Mark Schmitt examines the work of contemporary British novelists Irvine Welsh, Niall Griffiths, and John King and how they use this originally U.S.American stereotype to interrogate the racializing discourse of class in British society.

Olga Slavnikova Translated by Marian Schwartz

In the chaos of early 1990s Russia, the wife and stepdaughter of a paralyzed veteran conceal the Soviet Union’s collapse from him in order to keep him—and his pension—alive, until it turns out the tough old man has other plans. Olga Slavnikova’s The Man Who Couldn’t Die tells the story of how two women try to prolong a life—and the means and meaning of their own lives—by creating a world that doesn’t change, a Soviet Union that never crumbled. $14.95 / £11.99 paper 978-0-231-18595-0 $30.00 / £24.00 cloth 978-0-231-18594-3 2019 272 pages

Friedrich Gorenstein

Mikhail Zoshchenko

Mikhail Zoshchenko’s Sentimental Tales are satirical portraits of small-town characters on the fringes of Soviet society in the first decade of Bolshevik rule. An original perspective on Soviet life and uproariously funny, Sentimental Tales at last shows anglophone readers why Zoshchenko is considered among the greatest humorists of the Soviet era.

Friedrich Gorenstein’s Redemption is a stark and powerful portrait of humanity caught up in Stalin’s police state in the aftermath of World War II. A major work bearing witness to the Holocaust in the Soviet Union, Redemption is an important reckoning with anti-Semitism and Stalinist repression from a significant Soviet Jewish voice.

Gergana Ivanova examines how and why The Pillow Book has been read over the centuries, placing it in the multiple contexts in which it has been rewritten, including women’s education, literary scholarship, popular culture, “pleasure quarters,” and the formation of the modern nation-state. Drawing on scholarly commentaries, erotic parodies, instruction manuals for women, high school textbooks, and comic books, she considers its outsized role in ideas about Japanese women writers.

John Nathan provides a lucid and vivid account of Natsume Sōseki, the father of the modern novel in Japan. Nora M. Alter

Edited by Christine Gledhill and Linda Williams

Drawing on new scholarship in transnational theatrical, film, and cultural histories, this collection demonstrates that melodrama speaks to fundamental aspects of modern life and feeling. Contributors articulate new ways of thinking about melodrama that underscore its pervasiveness across national cultures and in a variety of genres.

Nora M. Alter reveals the essay film to be a hybrid genre that fuses the categories of feature, art, and documentary film. The essay film draws on a variety of forms and approaches; in the process, it fundamentally alters the shape of cinema. The Essay Film After Fact and Fiction locates the genre’s origins and follows its transformations.

Aesthetics, Practice, and Research

Edited and translated by Claudia Gorbman

Stefano Odorico

Interactive documentary is a newly emerging form of nonlinear, nonfiction narrative that animates viewers to control their own path through a film. Stefano Odorico examines the aesthetic structures and dynamics of interactive documentary as a web-based film experience. His study considers theoretical issues such as critical complexity, reality effect, and polyphony. $40.00 paper 978-3-8376-4231-5 2019 200 pages

TRANSCRIPT-VERLAG

Following his work on sound in film in Audio-Vision and Film, a Sound Art, Chion’s Words on Screen is a survey of everything the seventh art gives us to read on screen. He analyzes titles, credits, and intertitles, but also less obvious forms of writing that appear on screen, from the tear-stained letter in a character’s hand to reversed writing seen in mirrors. Through this examination, Chion delves into the multitude of roles that words on screen play. $30.00 / £20.00 paper 978-0-231-17499-2 $90.00 / £70.00 cloth 978-0-231-17498-5 2017 272 pages 256 illus.

Women Mobilizing Memory

Joan Wallach Scott

Edited by Ayşe Gül Altinay, María José Contreras, Marianne Hirsch, Jean Howard, Banu Karaca, and Alisa Solomon

This book presents a series of essays by the renowned historian Joan Wallach Scott that explore the history and theory of free inquiry and its value today. Scott considers the contradictions in the concept of academic freedom. She examines the relationship between state power and higher education; the differences between the First Amendment right of free speech and the guarantee of academic freedom; and, in response to recent campus controversies, the politics of civility. $28.00 / £22.00 cloth 978-0-231-19046-6 2019 184 pages

Women Mobilizing Memory explores the intersection of feminism, history, and memory, showing how the recollection of violent histories can generate possibilities for progressive futures. Questioning the politics of memory-making in relation to experiences of vulnerability and violence, this wide-ranging collection asks: How can memories of violence and its afterlives be mobilized for change and what strategies can disrupt and counter public forgetting?

Gods, Worlds, Monsters Mary-Jane Rubenstein

A Time to Stir Edited by Paul Cronin

A TIME TO STIR COLUMBIA ’ 68

Pantheism is the idea that God and the world are identical—that the creator and destroyer of all things is the universe itself. From a monotheistic perspective, this notion is irremediably heretical. Mary-Jane Rubenstein argues that what makes pantheism “monstrous”—at once repellent and seductive—is that it scrambles the raced and gendered distinctions that Western philosophy and theology insist on drawing between activity and passivity, spirit and matter, animacy and inanimacy, and creator and created.

For seven days in April 1968, students occupied five buildings on the Columbia University campus. A Time to Stir captures the reflections of those who participated in and witnessed the Columbia rebellion with more than sixty essays that shed light on the politics, passions, and ideals of the 1960s and the complicated legacy of the uprising. $35.00 / £27.00 cloth 978-0-231-18274-4 2018 512 pages 27 photographs
