Nancy Miller’s My Brilliant Friends: Our Lives in Feminism offers a group biography of three women— Carolyn Heilbrun, Diane Middlebrook, and Naomi Schor—whose lives exemplified the intersection of
the literary, the personal, and the political. With this in mind, we are very excited to share with you our list of new titles in literary criticism and theory, which examine the multiple ways in which literature and critical thought reflect, define, and alter our world.
Florence Dore’s Novel Sounds: Southern Fiction in the Age of Rock and Roll considers the cultural and
aesthetic links between such figures as Lead Belly and Faulkner, Bob Dylan and Flannery O’Connor. And what of those interactions that don’t quite mesh? Nan Da’s Intransitive Encounters considers the limitations of exchanges between China and the United States and what they mean for the study of
transnational literature. The concept of cultural difference is also the subject of Peter Morey’s powerful Islamophobia and the Novel, which examines how contemporary writers have challenged assumptions regarding the novel’s potential for empathy.
The interaction among technology, literature, society, and the personal is given two distinct treatments
in Media U: How the Need to Win Audiences Has Shaped Higher Education, by Mark Garrett Cooper and John Marx, and Roberto Simanowski’s Facebook Society: Losing Ourselves in Sharing Ourselves.
We continue our commitment to translation of works by major European thinkers with Paul Precadio’s eagerly anticipated performative literary text, Countersexual Manifesto; Alexandre Kojève’s Atheism, his
previously untranslated meditation on freedom and authority; and Alain Badiou’s compelling account of Lacan’s theory and therapeutic practice in the aptly titled Lacan.
For a more contemporary account of psychoanalysis there is Jamieson Webster’s much-talked-about Conversion Disorder: Listening to the Body in Psychoanalysis. Her book complements a range of new
