Letter from the editors: We are delighted to present the Columbia University Press Asian Studies catalog of new books for 2019. The books gathered here span many fields in Asian studies—literary studies, philosophy, religion, history, politics, and film—and reflect the interdisciplinary and global approach of our list. Translations have always been a critical part of the Columbia University Press Asian Studies list, and this year we have some particularly fun titles to share. Mingwei Song and Theodore Huters edit The Reincarnated Giant, a collection of twenty-first-century Chinese science fiction. Doug Slaymaker translates Kimura Yūsuke’s Sacred Cesium Ground and Isa’s Deluge: Two Novellas of Japan’s 3/11 Disaster. And Chris Peacock brings us The Handsome Monk and Other Stories, a volume of contemporary short fiction originally written in Tibetan by Tsering Döndrup. Our premodern offering, The Tale of Cho Ung: A Classic of Vengeance, Loyalty, and Romance, expertly translated from the Korean by Sookja Cho, is no less entertaining. We hope these books will find spots both in your classrooms and on your nightstands. On the scholarly side, in Fixing Landscape: A Techno-Poetic History of China’s Three Gorges, Corey Byrnes brings methods from critical geography, art history, and the environmental humanities to his study of the aesthetic history of the region. Other noteworthy Asian humanities titles include Sebastian Veg’s Minjian: The Rise of China’s Grassroots Intellectuals; Gergana Ivanova’s Unbinding The Pillow Book: The Many Lives of a Japanese Classic; and Ling Hon Lam’s The Spatiality of Emotion in Early Modern China: From Dreamscapes to Theatricality. In history and politics, Columbia continues its long tradition of publishing cutting-edge works that speak to Asia’s past and present. New books in history include Dominic Sachsenmaier’s Global Entanglements of a Man Who Never Traveled, a story of global intellectual life in seventeenth-century Ningbo; Zhihua Shen and Yafeng Xia’s Cold War history of Sino-Korean relations, A Misunderstood Friendship; and Max Oidtmann’s study of Qing influence over Tibetan Buddhist politics, Forging the Golden Urn. We are also especially pleased to launch Uneven Moments, a new collection of work on modern Japan by Harry Harootunian. In politics, David Kang and Victor Cha revisit their classic Nuclear North Korea, named in 2017 by the New York Times as one of the best books for understanding the country’s nuclear threat. The revised and updated edition carries forward their insightful debate on how best to address North Korea’s nuclear ambitions to the present day. Among the many outstanding philosophy and religion titles in this year’s wide-ranging catalog, several deserve special attention. The Oneness Hypothesis: Beyond the Boundary of Self, edited by Philip J. Ivanhoe, Owen J. Flanagan, Victoria S. Harrison, Hagop Sarkissian, and Eric Schwitzgebel, presents an interdisciplinary exploration of the self that profoundly challenges Western hyperindividualism. Johannes Bronkhorst’s A Śabda Reader, a new title in our Historical Sourcebooks in Classical Indian Thought series, investigates the role of language in interpreting sacred writings. Finally, The Buddha’s Wizards by Thomas Nathan Patton explores the little-studied supernatural landscape of Buddhism in Myanmar. Thank you for reading the latest work from Columbia University Press. Sincerely, Caelyn Cobb, editor for global history and politics Christine Dunbar, editor for Asian humanities and translations Wendy Lochner, publisher for philosophy and religion

LITERATURE/CULTURE The Hindi Canon

The Dancing Poet

Mrityunjay Tripathi.

Rimli Bhattacharya

Intellectuals, Processes, Criticism

Rabindranath Tagore and Modernity in Performance

Translated by Shad Naved

This book presents a systematic but critical account of the beginnings, development, and history of the process of canonization in Hindi via such exemplary figures as George Grierson, Garcin de Tassy, Ramchandra Shukla, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Ram Vilas Sharma, Muktibodh, Namwar Singh, and Nirmal Verma, among others. It proposes an intellectual history of Hindi criticism in the twentieth century, which today faces the challenges of a decanonization move in the form of feminist and Dalit thought.

Drawing on a range of visual archives and personal collections, this book casts Rabindranath Tagore as the “Dancing Poet,” in whom the contours of a pan-Indian diversity seek to merge, albeit selectively, with that of the world, eschewing the territorial borders of the nation-state while reiterating civilizational strands. Rimli Bhattacharya outlines the contradictions and possibilities in such aspirations, central to the new cultural texts that Tagore seeks to produce in lyric, songs, dance, image, or narrative.

Fear and Conspiracy on the Edge of Empire

Source Studies of the Safavid, Ottoman, and Mughal Literate Communities

Adam Clulow

Edited by Hani Khafipour

This volume is a comprehensive sourcebook of newly translated texts from the Safavid, Ottoman, and Mughal empires of the fifteenth through eighteenth centuries, accompanied by scholarly essays, that aims to provide a new model for the study and teaching of the early modern history of the Near East and India.

In 1623, Dutch authorities executed twenty-one alleged conspirators over a plot to seize a castle on a remote set of islands in what is now eastern Indonesia. In this landmark study, Adam Clulow presents a new perspective on the Amboina case that aims to move beyond the debate over guilt or innocence.

HISTORY The Making of a Periphery

What China and India Once Were

Ulbe Bosma

Edited by Sheldon Pollock and Benjamin Elman

How Island Southeast Asia Became a Mass Exporter of Labor

The Pasts That May Shape the Global Future

Island Southeast Asia was once a thriving region with products that found eager consumers from China to Europe. Today, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia are primarily exporters of their surplus of cheap labor. How did a prosperous region become a peripheral one? Ulbe Bosma draws on new archival sources from the colonial period to the present to demonstrate how high demographic growth and a long history of bonded labor relegated Southeast Asia to the margins of the global economy.

This book seeks to understand modern China and India through an unprecedented comparative analysis of their long histories. Using new sources, making new connections, and reexamining old assumptions, noted scholars of China and India pair up in each chapter to tackle major questions by combining their expertise. $35.00 / £27.00 paper 978-0-231-18471-1 $105.00 / £81.00 cloth 978-0-231-18470-0 2018 384 pages 15 illus.

Voices of Komagata Maru

The Art and Life of Gulammohammed Sheikh

Imperial Surveillance and Workers from Punjab in Bengal

Edited by Chaitanya Sambrani

Suchetana Chattopadhyay

This volume traces this early wartime clash of positions and the organized postwar transmission of the memory of the Komagata Maru as a symbol of resistance among the Sikh workers in the industrial centers of southwest Bengal. It acts as a link in a chain of scholarship that has hitherto traced the spread of radical anticolonial currents among the Punjabi Sikh diaspora that connected Punjab with Southeast Asia, East Asia, and the Americas.

Gulammohammed Sheikh has played a pioneering role in contemporary Indian art’s engagement with hybridity. At Home in the World presents the first comprehensive study of the art and life of this seminal figure, bringing together aspects of biographical discussion alongside other modes of art historical analysis.

Artistic Devotion of Buddhist Women in Late Imperial China

The Buddha's Wizards Magic, Protection, and Healing in Burmese Buddhism

Edited by Jonathan C. Gold and Douglas S. Duckworth

Thomas Nathan Patton

Śāntideva’s eighth-century work, the Guide to Bodhisattva Practice (Bodhicaryāvatāra), is one of the crucial texts of the Buddhist ethical and philosophical tradition. This book serves as a companion to this Indian Buddhist classic, illuminating the Guide’s many philosophical, literary, ritual, and ethical dimensions.

Belief in wizard-saints who protect their devotees and intervene in the world is widespread among Burmese Buddhists. The Buddha’s Wizards is a historically informed, ethnographic study that explores the supernatural landscape of Buddhism in Myanmar to explain the persistence of wizardry as a form of lived religion in the modern era.

The Oneness Hypothesis

10 Ambedkar Memorial Lectures

Beyond the Boundary of Self Edited by Philip J. Ivanhoe, Owen J. Flanagan, Victoria S. Harrison, Hagop Sarkissian, and Eric Schwitzgebel The idea that the self is inextricably intertwined with the rest of the world—the “oneness hypothesis”—can be found in many of the world’s philosophical and religious traditions. Challenging dominant traditional views that presume the proper scope of the mind stops at the boundaries of the skin and skull, The Oneness Hypothesis shows that a more relational conception of the self is not only consistent with contemporary science but has the potential to lead to greater happiness and well-being for both individuals and the larger wholes of which they are parts.
