A LETTER FROM THE SOCIAL WORK EDITOR:
I am pleased to share the 2019 Columbia University Press social work catalog. Many of the books featured here focus on helping social workers better understand the lives of vulnerable and disenfranchised populations. This year, Columbia is renewing its commitment to preparing graduate students for clinical practice at all levels. To do this, we’re publishing new editions of textbooks that have stood for decades as foundational introductions to human service topics. In Frederic G.Reamer’s Social Work Values and Ethics, updated with the release of the revised NASW Code of Ethics, students will find a case-driven, concise, and comprehensive survey of ethical decision-making, dilemmas, and professional conduct in practice. And in Marion Bogo’s second edition of Teaching in Social Work Practice, instructors will find a synthesis of the latest theories and practice models, helping and change processes, empirical findings, and practice skills. Other books focus on issues of perennial global concern. In Blaming Immigrants, Neeraj Kaushal surveys the rising tide of anti-immigrant sentiment around the world—and what we can do about it. Other new books focus on the dangers of burnout and promises of self-care and empathy within social work. In Stress, Trauma, and Decision-Making for Social Workers, Cheryl Regehr weaves together practice experiences, research on stress and trauma in high-risk professions, and empirical data on competence and decisions to make sense of the effects of trauma exposure on the social worker herself. And in Jason M. Newell’s Cultivating Professional Resilience in Direct Practice, clinicians and students will find a comprehensive approach to self-care that can help them remain resilient and committed in the face of trauma. In Social Empathy: The Art of Understanding Others, Liz Segal shows how empathic insight can help us understand each other’s life situations, including the structural inequalities and injustices that have shaped us—ultimately enhancing our social tolerance and dedication to protecting human rights. I hope my enthusiasm for these books comes through—I am proud to have published them. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with questions or ideas for other books that can join their ranks.

Social Work Values and Ethics Fifth Edition
Frederic G. Reamer Social Work Values and Ethics is the leading introduction to ethical decision-making and professional conduct. The fifth edition incorporates
significant updates to the National Association
of Social Workers Code of Ethics as well as new practice and model regulatory standards used by social service and licensing agencies around the
world. Reamer also focuses on how social workers should navigate the digital world through discussion of the ethical issues that arise from practi-

Supervision in Social Work Fifth Edition
Alfred Kadushin and Daniel Harkness This fifth edition takes into account the sizable
number of articles and books published on supervision since the previous edition came out in
2002. Changes in public health and social welfare policy have intensified concern about the social
work supervision of licensed practitioners. Tax and spending limitations at all levels of government, combined with the unfolding effects of welfare
reform and managed health care, have increasingly emphasized the need for efficient and accountable administration of health and social services in the
private and public sectors. Kadushin and Harkness
address issues raised by these developments, including budgetary allocation and staff management,
the problems of worker burnout and safety, and the

Social Work Practice Integrating Concepts, Processes, and Skills Second Edition
Marion Bogo Since its publication more than ten years ago, Social
Work Practice has been widely used as a succinct and focused book to prepare human service providers in the key components underpinning direct practice.
The second edition of Social Work Practice is updated with new empirical findings and foundational
information, while also supplementing the text
with the concepts and competencies in EPAS 2015. With an overall theme of holistic competence, the book incorporates the significant role of cognitive
and affective processes in social workers’ profession“Marion Bogo provides a definitive understanding of holistic social work competence....This book serves as a roadmap to the history and the future of the profession and should be required reading for every social work educator, student, and professional.”-Debra M. maintaining a reflective practice. With useful material on interpersonal communication, cross-cultural practice, and the use of technology in one guide,
Marion Bogo lays a general foundation for social work practice and professional development.

vices. Practitioners in settings from prisons to emergency rooms to nursing homes to child protection
agencies will find themselves with involuntary cli-
ents. In an update to this classic text, social workers Ronald H. Rooney and Rebecca G. Mirick provide
a theoretical framework for understanding the legal, ethical, and practical concerns when working with
involuntary clients, offering theory, treatment mod-

Handbook of Social Work Practice with Vulnerable and Resilient Populations Third Editon
Edited by Alex Gitterman This best-selling handbook examines not only risk and vulnerability factors in disadvantaged popu-
lations but also resilience and protective strategies
for managing and overcoming adversity. This third edition reflects new demographic data, research findings, and theoretical developments, and it
accounts for changing economic and political realities, including changes to immigration and health care policy. Contributors have expanded their
essays to include practice with individuals, families, and groups, and new chapters consider working
with military members and their families, victims and survivors of terrorism and torture, bullied children, and young men of color.
“This thoughtfully updated and expanded third edition of Gitterman’s popular handbook is firmly rooted in the most important ideas in social work: our biopsychosocial perspective on human challenges, our reliance on multiple theories and a risk and
