Some Windermere residents are questioning the RDEK’s public consultation process in a recent multi-housing development application.
Colleen Roberts from the Windermere Community Association told the Pioneer that the RDEK’s public input process for the Heritage Heights proposal did not allow sufficient time for the public to provide input on their concerns.
The proposed development on The Bench Road and North Street consists of approximately 120 units of rental and market housing featuring primarily duplexes and townhouses. The developer is AFN enterprises (Akisqnuk First Nation).
Roberts said many residents missed the tight timeline for public input because they only had three business days to respond. She noted that nine letters of objection submitted to the RDEK had met the deadline, while other letters were not accepted.
Roberts also expressed a concern that people had to register two days in advance to participate in the public hearing via Zoom. In the past at in-person hearings, anyone could attend and speak without registering in advance, she pointed out.
“Understandably, Windermere residents are upset, as are other members of the public who may be affected . . .”
Colleen Roberts
Roberts said several issues have been raised by the public relating to the application in question. These include the lack of proof of adequate capacity for water and sewage disposal treatment, along with increased traffic created by such a high density development.
“It is felt the additional traffic created at the proposed density (over twice the current zoning) will exacerbate the existing unsafe accesses from Windermere to Highway 93/95,” Roberts said.
She added that although the developer states they will put a caveat on title restricting short-term rentals, the RDEK “continues to approve STRs with such caveats stating they have no legal interest in those caveats.”
Roberts said she was advised by RDEK staff that the public cannot present on this issue at the Planning and Development Services Committee meeting on February 13 because their policy is no information can be received by the board after the public hearing.
“Understandably, Windermere residents are upset, as are other members of the public, who may be affected by
the water and sewage disposal servicing and traffic impacts (that this development will create).”
She questions why the RDEK set such a short timeline for the public to respond to such a significant development that gives rise to many concerns.
Roberts also noted that both RDEK directors Al Miller and Susan Clovechok indicated their support of the project prior to the public hearing (before listening to the public’s concerns).
Richard Haworth, the developer’s consultant, previously acknowledged the concerns, saying that development cost charges would contribute to the cost of upgrading water and sewer services. He also stated that AFN Enterprises has sources of funding that the RDEK may not have.
Haworth told the Pioneer that a traffic impact assessment would be required as a condition of subdivision. He noted this study will determine what improvements are required and the timing for completion. He added the developer will be responsible for their share of the costs.
RDEK Corporate Officer Tina Hlushak told the Pioneer that public hearing notices must be published not less than three days and not more than 10 days before the public hearing. She noted they are required by bylaw to post in a local newspaper for one publication date, in addition to the RDEK website. Other methods of notification include online news and social media.
Hlushak outlined some dates of interest and notifications regarding the application in question:
• January 16 — Public hearing notices mailed to owners within 100 metres of land in question.
• January 16 —Public hearing notice posted to RDEK website.
• January 20 — Board highlights emailed to 6,596 persons, which included 1,014 to the Windermere email group, member municipalities and local First Nations.
• Jan 21–29 — Public hearing notice was published on EKNOW
• January 23. —Advertisement in Columbia Valley Pioneer
• January 27 —Public hearing mail or written submission deadline at 4:30 p.m., and public hearing pre-register to provide verbal presentation
• January 29 — Public hearing at 7 p.m. via Zoom
• February 14 —Public hearing report to be received at board meeting.
Hlushak confirmed that written and/or verbal presentations to the RDEK board after the close of any public hearings are not allowed. In addition, the board cannot receive any additional information on Bylaws 3353 and 3354 until the hearing report has been received on February 14.

On February 5 the Columbia Valley RCMP were dispatched to a vehicle fire just north of Fairmont on Hwy 93/95.
Upon arrival, the fire department was already on scene and tending to the fire. All three occupants were able to get out of the vehicle prior to the fire starting.
The fire department suspected the fire started from within the cab of the vehicle. The owner and occupants confirmed the same, stating they were driving when the vehicle lost power and the dash board started to smoke.
The Columbia Valley detachment recently attended four separate calls regarding mental health. One of those calls resulted in an apprehension under
the Mental Health Act. The person was taken to the hospital where they became aggressive with staff and locked themselves in a bathroom. Members were able to de-escalate the person, who became cooperative with hospital staff.
The families of three young men who died in a single vehicle collision in Wilmer last summer are urging people to respect the law as court proceedings continue for the accused, Haley Watson.
Watson made no appearance in Invermere court on Monday, Feb. 10, but was represented by her legal counsel. Very little transpired except for the setting of another court date on March 10 for election, and a decision on the presiding judge.
Watson is facing charges of impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death following a motor vehicle accident on Westside Road on July 9, 2024.
The courtroom was reportedly full on Monday as family and friends of the victims sat silently awaiting justice for Brady, Gavin and Jackson.
In a Facebook posting, the families asked the public to respect the proceedings of law.
“Silence speaks volumes, and strength is found in dignity. Let our presence be a reflection of the love we hold for Brady, Gavin, and Jackson — honouring their memory with grace and respect.”
The families added that “justice is not served through chaos, anger or disruption, but through steadfastness and integrity.”

It’s become an unpleasant summer routine for Columbia Valley residents to keep checking wildfire updates. Fires, either in the valley or elsewhere, have become so common that weeks of smoky-filled skies are now routine.
But wildfires are not the only extreme weather event to plague the valley with increasing frequency. In summer 2021 an unbelievable hour-long blast of torrential hail and rain hammered Invermere, flash flooding parts of town and creating a short-lived river swirling down main street. Last summer a pair of significant windstorms struck the valley, bringing down many trees and causing plenty of property damage.
Invermere officials hope to improve drainage across the district to mitigate or at least lessen the impact of such storms, particularly flash floods like that in 2021. The first step in that direction came during a recent community of the whole meeting, when planning consultants presented an integrated storm master plan to Invermere councillors.
The plan identifies 32 drainage problem locations in Invermere. These are mostly scattered throughout town, but there are a few spots where several are clustered close together: at the northern end of Upper Invermere (in the part of the community north of Sobey’s but perched above Athalmer and the Industrial Park); through the downtown core; and in the Wilder subdivision (where there are multiple “ponding” locations).
Suggested options to improve the situation include upgrading catchbasin systems and culverts to make them less prone to clogging; re-grading roads; putting in evaporative ditch systems in road right-of-ways; reconstructing roads with curbs and gutters; and increasing maintenance of catchbasins and drywells.
“There’s climate change and major storm events happening. We want to protect our community,” Invermere mayor Al Miller told the Pioneer. “There are a lot of low, flat areas in Invermere where we see small lakes gathering when we have these events.”
The integrated storm management plan is preliminary in nature, and just the start of a longer process.
“Now our team can take this plan and map out the next steps,” said Miller. He added it’s still too early to put a timeline to the project, but that it takes at least a year to figure out which parts of the plan should get the most priority and how to budget for them.
Miller said he’s not really surprised at the problem areas pointed out in the plan. “Anyone who’s been here for a while has seen the flooding that can happen here,” he explained, referencing the 2021 hail storm.
That particular event was much worsened by main street drains that were quickly overwhelmed, then blocked, outlined Miller, adding that’s exactly the kind of thing the district hopes to address with the plan.
“We want to get a good handle on all of this, figure out how do we deal with it,” he said.
It breaks one’s heart knowing that children are missing meals or going to school with worn-out clothing because their family lives in poverty.
In yesteryear you could easily discern which children were poor by the holes in their jeans (which ironically today is a sign of being fashionably “cool”). The bigger the rips, the cooler the child . . . literally.
Some kids often came to school with no food and would “bum” snacks from their friends whose lunchboxes were chock full of ham and cheese sandwiches, Half Moon cakes and Dare cookies. These were the wealthier students, the ones who brought Granny Smith apples to class.
There was much poverty then as there is today, and it doesn’t appear to be getting any better, according to the 2024 BC Child Poverty Report released in December by First Call Child and Youth Advocacy Society.
The report reveals a continuing rise in child destitution in BC, with one in six children (147,570) living below the poverty line. This suggests a 17 per cent increase from 2021 and points to the ongoing financial hardship that families are struggling with.
The most vulnerable are children in single-parent households, 45.5 per cent of whom are living in poverty, fighting rising costs and accessible child care.
First Call executive director Adrienne Montani says behind every statistic is a child whose potential is being constrained by circumstances beyond their control.
Key findings of the report include the widening gap between incomes of BC’s richest and poorest families, and the disproportionate affect on Indigenous youth.
The report indicates the poverty rate among children on a sample of First Nation reserves is an alarming 35 per cent, rising to 42 per cent on rural reserves.
With no more pandemic-era income supports, families are hurting. That’s why First Call is urging policymakers to raise living wages and support systems, expand access to affordable housing and child care, and focus on Indigenous and lone-parent families.
Locally, the Windermere Teachers’ Association previously tackled child poverty by calling for a strategy to reduce destitution among youth and their families. Teachers reported that some students were dozing off in class, while others were stealing their classmates’ lunches.
Thankfully, a lot has happened over the past 10 years to address this problem. Many schools have established nutritional food programs for hungry students, and the BC government passed a new, updated strategy to reduce child poverty by 75 per cent. But more needs to be done.
Kudos to parent advisory councils in the district for pulling out the stops locally to ensure that many pupils aren’t learning on an empty stomach.

(The following is a letter to the Honourable Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, regarding issues with the bylaw amendment process for Bylaws No. 3353 and 3354 —Heritage Heights Development Inc. Windermere, BC.)
I am writing to ask the Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs to investigate the actions of the RDEK on the above application.
The public notice for Bylaws No. 3353 and No. 3354 was placed in the Columbia Valley Pioneer on Thursday, January 23, 2025. It stated all written comments from the public must be submitted by Monday, January 27, 2025. However, a few lines below, it stated “Submissions cannot be accepted after the public hearing.” The notice presented confusing submission deadlines.
Due to a lack of clarity with the deadlines, letters submitted after Monday, January 27, but before the public hearing started, were all rejected.
The notice provided only three business days for
the public to make submissions and register for the public hearing, which was held only two days later, on Wednesday, Jan. 29.
While this timeline meets legal requirements, I question why the RDEK set such an inappropriately short timeline for public input for such a significant development that raises many concerns.
The landowner held an open house on December 16, 2024, where residents raised issues, including the capacity for water and sewage disposal to accommodate a density over twice that of the existing zoning, significant traffic that will exacerbate the current difficult access from Windermere to Highway 93/95, the impact on the already overcrowded Windermere Beach (operated by the RDEK) and other issues. The landowner’s planning consultant dismissed these concerns with “these will be addressed later.”
Addressing items later for a development of this size as it pertains basic infrastructure needs is not acceptable through the open house. I would hope that a plan would have been in place. Continued on page 7
Continued from page 6
Please note I am ‘not’ against the additional housing, but infrastructure and highway access need to be considered while asking for bylaw amendments for this development.
Public hearings may be conducted in person or via Zoom. In-person public hearings require only registration upon entry to the meeting room. Once admitted, participants can easily speak if they choose. While the decision to hold the public hearing via Zoom was logical, given the time of year, it did reduce the ability of the public to participate. This is because the RDEK requires all persons wishing to attend to register at least two days before a public hearing. In this case, the public hearing was just over a day and a half after the submission deadline. This was only three business days after the notice of both events.
I do not understand why the RDEK implements such a stringent requirement to attend public hearings via Zoom. With today’s technology, it would be simple
for planning staff and/or a director in attendance to admit members of the public at the start of the meeting. There could be a cut-off time for admittance. This would eliminate the need for a two-day advance registration as the number of participants can be counted upon entry. The ability of the moderator to mute participants addresses any behaviour concerns.
After the landowner’s open house, the area director representing Windermere (F) and the mayor of Invermere, also on the RDEK board of directors, expressed their support for the application. This was prior to the public hearing and listening to the concerns of local residents. It should be noted that the Advisory Planning Committee recommended the refusal of the application.
Members of the public would like the ability to attend RDEK Planning and Development Services and board meetings when first and second readings are considered for bylaw amendments or other planning issues. Currently, this is nearly impossible. If a mem-
ber of the public wishes to make a delegation to either meeting, they must make a request to the corporate officer by noon on Wednesday before the meetings take place. Ironically, the agendas for those meetings are not posted until the Friday. How are we supposed to speak at these meetings?
Based on the above, you can see how frustrated I am given the barriers and lack of process the RDEK has created, not only on this application but on other planning issues.
Would the minister please direct his staff to investigate the actions of the RDEK on the matters listed above?
The application for Bylaws No. 3353 and No. 3354 will likely be discussed at the planning meeting on Thursday, February 13 and on February 14. We anticipate the bylaw amendment's third reading being approved, but we ask that my concerns with this application be addressed as soon as possible.
Carleen
Campbell, Windermere
The Windermere Community Association (WCA) is asking the Ministry of Housing & Municipal Affairs to investigate the RDEK’s handling of the rezoning process for Bylaws No. 3353 and No. 3354.
This rezoning would permit a 131unit multifamily development, increasing Windermere’s population by 50 per cent and more than doubling the current zoning, which only allows 56 units. Concerns such as the capacity for water and sewage disposal, adding traffic to the already unsafe access from Windermere to Highway 93/95, and the impact of adding to the already crowd-
ed Windermere beach were dismissed.
We were told they would be dealt with at the subdivision stage in the planning process.
Unfortunately, subdivision approvals are done by the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI), where there is no public input.
The RDEK only gave the public three business days to submit comments on the application and to register to attend the January 29 public hearing.
The deadlines in the notice in the Columbia Valley Pioneer on January 23 were confusing, leading to submissions (including the WCA) being rejected.
Residents also faced barriers to attending the public hearing via Zoom due to outdated pre-registration rules. In-person public hearings only require registration at the door.
The developer held an open house in December. The mayor of Invermere (an RDEK director) and the Area F director expressed support for the project in the January 16 edition of the Pioneer
This was before the public hearing and listening to the community's concerns. The Advisory Planning Committee, made up of local residents, recommended the refusal of the application. Finally, the RDEK makes it almost impossible to make a presentation to the RDEK Planning & Development Services Committee and board meetings. Continued on page 8

The Columbia Valley RCMP’s newest detachment commander loved the valley even before moving here, and hopes to call it home for a long time to come.
Sergeant Jeff Witzke has been in his new role for a few months now, taking over from Sgt. Ed deJong (who left to become Operations NCO in Terrace, B.C.) at the end of 2024. Prior to becoming a sergeant, Witzke was a corporal with the Columbia Valley RCMP for several years.
But his connection to the valley goes back to holidays decades ago. Witzke is a third generation Mountie. His dad had RCMP postings all over Alberta, but the family always took vacations in B.C.
When Witzke was a kid, he wasn’t 100 per cent sure what he wanted to be when he grew up. But policing was “something I was familiar with,” he explained, and in 2008 he followed in the family footsteps and joined the RCMP.
He worked first in a small town near the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border before moving to northern Alberta. Then he had a five-year stint in Edmonton with a special organized crime gang enforcement unit. The work was interesting, but a half-decade in a big city was enough.
“My wife and I started a family. We’d always come to B.C. for holidays and we knew it was where we wanted to live,” said Witzke.
They were both familiar with the Columbia Valley and thought it was the perfect place to make their home. But there were no openings at the time with the Columbia Valley RCMP, so Witzke took a job in Whistler where the family lived for three and a half years.
Eventually a job in the Columbia Valley came up, and the Witzkes packed up and moved again. This time, they hope to stay put.
“Ultimately we ended up where we wanted to be. We want to stay long term and raise our family here,” said Witzke. “Whistler was good, but it’s definitely a big resort town. There are one million-plus tourists a year there. Here there’s tourism, but it is certainly not as busy.”
The Witzkes have two kids and the whole family spends as much time outdoors as possible.
“We love all of the activities — hiking, biking, fishing, just being on the lake. We’re avid snowmobilers and skiers,” Witzke told the Pioneer. “The Columbia Valley has so much to offer, and it’s stunningly beautiful.”
If he had to pick a favourite outdoor spot in the valley, Witzke would choose being out on the lake in a boat.
Community policing is not an easy job — officers work long hours, must wear many hats at once, and often end up in difficult situations. But Witzke finds meaning in the work.
“Some parts are thankless, sure,” he said. “But when you help protect people, when you help those who are truly in a crisis, that is a reward in itself. You have a chance to really make a differ-
ence in people’s lives.”
Witzke also enjoys the small town part of working with the Columbia Valley RCMP.
“I like that you get to be part of the community. That people know who you are, and you are approachable even when you’re not in uniform. You work in the community, but you also very much live in it too – that is key to me,” he said.
Letter continued from page 7
The deadline for the public to request to speak at either meeting is noon on the Wednesday before the meetings. These are held on the following Thursday and Friday. Ironically, their agendas are not posted on the RDEK website until the Friday before the meetings.
The RDEK may say it is following the legal process, but does that make it right? Our elected officials have the authority to do the right thing before Windermere is forced to deal with
the consequences of their quick decision-making.
The rezoning will be discussed at the planning meeting on February 13 and the board meeting on February 14. We encourage residents to stay informed and demand a fair, transparent process. To attend the meetings via Zoom go to: https://www.rdek.bc.ca/ meetings_events/agendas

Revitalizing a language is helping a number of students in the school district celebrate their culture and identity.
Thanks to a partnership with the Shuswap Band, Rocky Mountain School District No. 6 is offering Secwepemctsín language classes at J.A. Laird School every week for all Windermere zone Shuswap students.
Every Thursday for 30 minutes, pupils from Windermere Elementary, Eileen Madson Primary, Edgewater Elementary and David Thompson Secondary School come together to learn the language crucial to their heritage.
“I like the atmosphere when we are learning Secwepemctsín; I find it calming,” said Shawn, one of the students.
Jenny Reid, District Principal of Indigenous Learning and Equity, said the school district recognizes how vital language is to Indigenous culture as it holds the stories, song protocols, histories, and connections of Indigenous Peoples.
“We are very proud of our staff and students for engaging in this important opportunity and thank the Shuswap Band for partnering with us to support the language learning for students,” she said.
Shuswap Band language coordinator (and class instructor) Tisha Tardiff uses an evidence-based method called “total physical response” to engage the students with movement and gestures that help them remember the words they are learning.
Kiera, one of the students, said the class is “awesome,” noting she really likes having ‘Ms. Tish’ teach them.
Selena, another student, likes everything about Secwepemctsín classes with Ms. Tish. “It’s very fun!” she noted.
Class coordinator Tristin Campbell, an Indigenous education support worker at J.A Laird School, said it is an absolute joy to see so many Shuswap students eagerly engaging in the revitalization of their language and “confidently sharing what they have learned with their family and friends.”
Shuswap Band Chief Barb Cote said having the language being taught in the schools is amazing. She noted this could not have been possible without the Secwepemc language being taught to some of their community members who are taking the time to take the courses being offered at post secondary schools. “We have so many of our community members and youth who are eager to learn our language which is such an important part of our culture and identity,” Cote stated.

It’s Valentines Day tomorrow and there is love in the air (or at least, I think that’s what that smell is…)! It’s also Chamber of Commerce Week. Coincidence? Maybe. Regardless, here is a message from the BC Chamber of Commerce about, well, how awesome the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce is: “February 10 to 14, 2025 is Chamber of Commerce Week in British Columbia. Therefore, it is an opportune time to recognize and celebrate the meaningful work undertaken by the chambers of commerce and boards of trade in communities across the province. These local business organizations are more than just community boosters. They are convenors, collaborators and catalysts for positive change and are integral to creating sustainable, healthy communities. Whether it’s advocating to local, provincial or federal governments for changes to public policy on matters that stretch far beyond taxation to include societal issues like housing, healthcare, and mental health and addictions, developing innovative programs and initiatives to support business, or leading charitable works that contribute to social well-being, local chambers of commerce and boards of trade are the trusted “boots on the ground” that understand the unique needs of their communities. The BC Chamber of Commerce applauds and celebrates each and every one, and thanks their executives and
boards of directors for their tireless work to support their businesses and communities. This week, we encourage BC residents and businesses to learn more about their local chamber of commerce or board of trade, and to get involved in the important work they do to improve the health and prosperity of the community they serve.” Isn’t that just the sweetest?!?

The Columbia River is one of the most important rivers on the continent, famous for its mighty flow, its salmon runs, and the many dams along its length.
The powerful waterway has a humble beginning, with its source right here in the Columbia Valley, a set of small springs feeding a narrow creek within the municipal boundaries of the Village of Canal Flats.
The trail to this source could be spruced up in the near future.
Canal Flats resident Colin Cartwright appeared before village council recently, outlining that there may be funding available for some improvements to the trail from groups such as the Columbia Lake Stewardship Society.
Cartwright said there is already a good interpretive sign at the start of the trail, but that he thinks it would be good to add a kiosk with a sign-in. He explained he’s met people from all around the world – Europe,
South America, Australia and New Zealand – on the trail.
“I think it would be very interesting, if nothing else just for general interest, to see who uses the trail, how much it’s used, and so on,” Cartwright told council.
An accurate idea of trail use could make it easier to secure grants and other funding for the trail, he outlined.
“I really don’t know what shape and size and so on this kind of thing would take,” said Cartwright, adding something similar to the sign-in registers and kiosks that provincial parks and national parks use on their popular trails would probably be appropriate. “It doesn’t have to be fancy. Just something that could be kept out of the weather with some sort of booklet and a pen or pencil that people can’t steal.”
Cartwright was also keen on putting up fencing beside the trail’s entrance gate.
“It would make the place look a lot more presentable,” he said, adding he envisions a simple pole fence extending about 50 feet from each side of the gate, with
a dozen fence posts and 20 or so wooden rails. “Just something to smarten it up, make it look more official.”
Canal Flats council members seemed to like the idea.
Councillor Andrew Weitzel asked who owns the dirt road that people must drive to reach the trailhead.
“I’m actually not allowed to say, to be honest. But the village has a right of way,” replied Canal Flats acting chief administrative officer Sylvie Hoobanoff.
Weitzel said the road needs to be graded, and that he was going to suggest grant money be used for that. But since the village doesn’t own the road, he continued, it can’t use grant money for grading.
Weitzel and councillor Paul Marcil suggested the Canal Flats Wilderness Club and Columbia Lake Stewardship Society may want to collaborate with Cartwright and others on the project.
“I think it (the fence and kiosk) would look really good,” said Hoobanoff, but she added the village needs to see a formal proposal before any work could be done.
Engaging the community and bringing it together wasn’t an immediate goal that Amanda Nason set her sights on when entering the ruthless world of business.
It was just surviving. And to think it all started with eight little piglets that she felt sorry for makes her chuckle.
“In my younger years I farmed with my then husband; we raised a variety of animals but I learned quickly that wasn't for me.”
She sadly discovered that not all animals accept their young.
“Little sensitive me was not going to let eight little piglets perish because the mother rejected them.”
Nason was eight months pregnant with her daughter and was determined to give the piglets a fighting chance by bottle feeding each one every two to four hours. It was exhausting, but she was definitely ready for her own childbirth, she laughs.
“It was in my blood from then on. I took other jobs along the way but always fell back into the newspaper industry.”
After her farm girl adventure, Nason went back to school and studied business, soon landing a job in sales at the local daily newspaper.
Being the publisher and now owner of The Columbia Valley Pioneer was never her dream, but it quickly became her reality. “After working for the former owner for many years and learning so much about our community and the business on a much deeper level, I couldn't imagine not doing it. I love what we do here in the Columbia Valley.”
She admits that being a female in a male-dominated industry was a little intimidating at first. “That stays in the back of your mind, however, I'm not afraid to stand up and have my voice heard when it's necessary . . . that's just my nature.”
Nason says the most important lesson she has learned is no matter the level of kindness that people have, their goals are not always going to align with yours as a business owner. So she offers this advice to those starting out: Don’t run away from challenges. Deal with them head on and stay

focused on your goals. After all, it is your business, nobody else’s.
Nason takes a bird’s eye view when she looks at The Columbia Valley Pioneer.
“What keeps us going? Staying connected to the local news that matter to our readers. Are there more stories out there? Yes, but in this business you have to balance advertising with editorial.”
She notes the cost of printing is very expensive, and if you don't have that balance you can't survive the future. “I am determined. I said that from day-one failure is not an option.”
The other side is having the right staff, which is the key to any successful business.
“I strive to be fair . . . am I perfect? No, but I'll own it if I'm wrong. And I do listen to suggestions and balance that with knowledge. Sometimes we just have to say, well, let's give it a try. If it works, we’ll do it again, if it doesn’t, we move on to something else.”
At the end of the day, it's not only Amanda Nason.
“It's all of us that put the paper together each week to make it informative for the readers and to keep the community engaged. It takes an entire community for a newspaper to be successful. My part is just keeping the business alive.”

In the last year, Monika has enjoyed reconnecting with people in the valley as well as building new connections with local residents. Monika is grateful to have recently celebrated one year in business and she’s looking forward to continue bringing beauty to the Columbia Valley.
“Growing up in Canal Flats, I’ve always had a strong connection to the Columbia Valley. Returning to the valley allowed me to combine my passion for hairstyling with the love I have for the place I call home, serving the community that raised me.”

A provincial transportation advocacy group is lobbying to get public bus service from Banff to the Columbia Valley. Local officials here love the idea, but doubt it will get far with provincial authorities.
Transport Action British Columbia representative Brendan Read recently wrote Invermere council, highlighting what his group feels is an opportunity to improve public transit links between the valley and Alberta. The possibility of reviving passenger rail service between downtown Calgary and Banff has been discussed for several years, and the Alberta government announced last year that it is developing a master rail plan. That master plan includes examining the feasibility of a Calgary-Banff train. Historically Banff was built on rail tourism, but the last passenger rail service to the community (run by VIA Rail) ended in 1990.
If the Calgary-Banff train project goes ahead, Read wrote that Invermere council should ask the British Columbia government to work with the Alberta government to set up a bus service between Invermere and Banff. That way, valley residents could get from Invermere to Calgary by a combination of bus and train.
The bus would be managed by the B.C. government, with direction and oversight by municipalities and other local stakeholders, but would be privately operated, wrote Read. He added “the bus service, combined with train service would greatly improve access for residents and visitors, providing an attractive, affordable, safer, and greener option to driving on the often crowded —and still treacherous — highways.” He
also wrote that perhaps “the bus service could help make the financial case for rail by adding customers and revenues.”
Invermere mayor Al Miller thinks a public bus to Banff would be tremendous for Columbia Valley residents, but also feels it is unfortunately very unlikely to come to fruition.
“It would be wonderful to have, but at this time and place, I have a really hard time seeing it happen,” Miller told the Pioneer.
Miller noted it has been very hard for him and other Columbia Valley officials to convince B.C. provincial transport authorities to budget for local public transportation improvements within the Columbia Valley. “So to then try to get the budget for a (public transportation) service on a whole other level, from the valley to Alberta, I just don’t see it happening anytime soon,” he said. “We sure need it, and we would sure use it if it was there. But we can’t get our provincial government and the Alberta government to work together on health care, much less transit.”
The health care comment references an issue that began seven or eight years ago, when suddenly Columbia Valley patients who would normally have been sent to facilities and specialists in Alberta were instead directed to Kelowna.
The Pioneer asked Read how likely a cross-border bus is, given the lack of interprovincial cooperation on health care.
“It all depends on whether the Alberta government proceeds with the Calgary-Banff rail,” Read replied. He conceded that the Columbia Valley is relatively small in the scope of the entire province of B.C., but pointed out that a Banff-Invermere bus is “of benefit to both (Alberta and B.C.).”

A few bumps in the road last weekend were frustrating for the Columbia Valley Rockies with back-to-back losses, but the team and head coach Tayler Sincennes know it’s time to get down to brass tacks.
“It was a tough weekend for sure,” said Sincennes. “Certainly no need to panic but we definitely have to go back to the drawing board as a coaching staff and players to get the most out of the remainder of the season and post season. We have a very talented group but we have mental lapses at key points of games far too often and that's what is costing us right now.”
Friday, Nov. 7 saw the boys in Kimberley facing the Eddie Mountain Division leading Dynamiters. Netminder
Ryan Bain kept 31 of 35 shots on goal at bay but the game ended 4-0 for The Nitros.
The following night in Beaver Valley saw Hunter Arntsen in goal, stopping 29 of 35 shots, but the game just didn’t go the Rockies’ way, ending 3-6 for the Nite Hawks.
Rockies that did find their mark were Ashton Sledz (assists by Wyatt Wurtz and Kobe Mason), Carter Velker (Johnny Lozeman and Carter Hensch) and then Hensch (Teo Fath and Noah Asmundson).
Friday Feb. 14 the boys are back in Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena hosting the Golden Rockets and there is a sale when you buy your tickets online at Showpass so you can treat your Valentine sweetheart to some Junior A hockey action. Puck drop at 7 p.m.

Maxine Hayward
March 28, 1948 — February 2, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Maxine Hayward on February 2, 2025 after a brief battle with cancer.
Maxine was born in Calgary on March 28, 1948, to Irving and Annie Tangan, the third of four sisters. Maxine met her late husband, Howard, in 1968 and they were married on April 16, 1971.
Maxine and Howard fell in love with the beauty of the Columbia Valley and made it their home. Maxine worked at the Invermere Regional Hospital for many years as the Assistant to the Director before she started her next endeavour, life as a mother. Howard and Maxine welcomed their first child, Tia, in 1979, and their second, Trevor, in 1982.
Maxine was known as a devoted mother, a loyal wife, and a caring and supportive friend. Their home was always a welcoming hub for family and friends to gather together. Maxine had a deep love for spiritual things and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1973. Her faith never wavered despite the ups and downs that life threw at her. She lost her right eye in a previous battle with cancer, but always kept a positive attitude. It was her deep conviction in the Bible’s promise of a beautiful future for mankind that helped bring her peace right up until her death, where she was surrounded by her loved ones. Maxine was predeceased by her parents and husband. She is survived by her children, Tia (Terry) and Trevor (Carmen), and grandchildren Taryn (Sydney), Teagan (Oliver), Ava, Jace, and Cole.
She is also survived by her sisters Beverly, Delores, and Leona (Gordon), her nephews Sheldon (Sheri) and Shane, and her stepdaughters Tina and Theresa (Dave) and their families. Her funeral service will take place at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Invermere on March 8, 2025 at 2pm MST. All are welcome to attend. Specifically, Case Manager Jessie Stoney who ensured mom wasn’t in pain and the Home Care Aids that treated mom with such extreme tenderness.

On January 21, 2025 newly inaugurated US President Donald Trump and his inner circle attended a prayer service at the National Cathedral in Washington. It was presided over by The Right Rev Mariann Edgar Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington.
When I first listened to the excerpt of her speaking directly to the president, which she did in the last two minutes of her sermon, I felt something like anxiety inside of me. What she was saying and how she was saying it was so bold, so adultish. Perhaps the little child in me was afraid that someone could be so grown up. I would not have been so courageous, nor so humble, in that situation.
I would have tried to be more pleasing. But when Bishop Mariann finished her words, I had tears in my eyes. In a gentle, vulnerable but courageous way she simply spoke what I believe is the gospel. It would have been easier to say what she said on a regular Sunday morning – preaching to the choir, as they say – but so much harder to do with the audience she had that day.
I have now listened to and read her entire sermon. It isn’t long, and it’s really good. She spoke of unity. Her opening words were “we have gathered this morning to pray for unity as a nation – not for agreement, political or otherwise, but for the kind of unity that
fosters community across diversity and division, a unity that serves the common good.” She went on to speak of three foundations for unity.
“The first foundation for unity,” she said, “is honouring the inherent dignity of every human being, which is, as all faiths represented here affirm, the birthright of all people as children of the One God.” Then in a bit she said, “a second foundation for unity is honesty in both private conversation and public discourse. If we aren’t willing to be honest, there is no use in praying for unity, because our actions work against the prayers themselves.” Then, she said, “the third foundation for unity is humility, which we all need, because we are all fallible human beings.
We make mistakes. We say and do things that we regret. We have our blind spots and biases, and we are perhaps the most dangerous to ourselves and others when we are persuaded, without a doubt, that we are absolutely right and someone else is absolutely wrong.” In her closing comments she asked the president to show mercy upon immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, the vulnerable and to those who are afraid.
Many lauded Mariann Budde for what she said and how she said it. Others condemned her. She was called radical, woke, left-leaning, a Trump hater. A congressperson said she should be deported. Fox News called her Satan. Mmm …. one wonders if Jesus would have been called radical, woke, and left-leaning. He wasn’t deported, but he was crucified. I appreciate Mariann Budde for representing her faith tradition in an honest, brave, inclusive and mature way.

The Columbia Valley is a great place to get hitched. Those who’ve gotten married here gush with enthusiasm. And those thinking of soon tying the knot in the place where glittering lakes meet majestic mountains can learn more about shaping their dream wedding at the first-ever Columbia Valley Wedding Expo.
The expo is on Saturday, March 1 at the Radium Hot Springs Centre, and will feature several dozen vendors from the valley’s wedding industry.
It’s being put on by Travel Columbia Valley and Radium Hot Springs events company Marquee Events. Marquee Events proposed the idea, explained Travel Columbia Valley executive director Jessica Fairhart. “And we thought it was great. We are trying to increase weddings, events and conventions in the Columbia Valley, and this is an excellent way to help that.”
“The vendors are super excited. They think it is something that is needed in the valley,” added Travel Columbia Valley social media and marketing coordinator Weronika Bobka.
The vendors include photographers, caterers, florists, wedding planners, venue representatives, accommodators, deejays, entertainment professionals and more, outlined Fairhart. “Anything you need to plan and to execute a dream wedding, it will be there,” she said.
There will be nearly 30 vendors, and Bobka said they are expecting about 200 attendees, although she
was quick to add it could easily be more.
Fairhart said the expo is aimed both at couples getting married here this summer and wanting to iron out the final, last-minute details, as well as for couples planning to say “I do” in 2026 or 2027and still in the early stages of planning.
There will be plenty of inspiration, expert advice, tips on the latest trends, interactive displays, and some giveaways and special offers. Taynton Bay will be serving cocktails, and there will even be a 360 photo booth.
The expo runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
