the Playful issue When it comes time to plan your wedding, you might want to consider some alternatives to the age-old traditions that have defined wedding formalities for centuries. Why? Colourful photos filled with laughing friends and family are easily one reason. A relaxed atmosphere to ensure you are smiling and at ease for your special day is another. By shifting your focus away from the “perfect” wedding to a “playful” wedding will not only tap into your own unique creativity, but will also make for a more entertaining and enjoyable day for all involved. Though playfulness is best expressed in your own personal way, in this year’s edition of Columbia Valley Weddings, writer Erin Knutson has pulled together a myriad of suggestions and tips to help you ditch the serious, embrace the playful and make marrying your loved one the most magical day of your life. . — Nicole Trigg, Editor

planning 3

Planning the party Keeping the party rolling after the wedding vows have been exchanged is just as important as creating a flawless ceremony. Planning a dynamic party for the reception that makes a statement as unique and colourful as your personality demands is key to pulling off the big day with style and panache. Here are a few expert tips on the latest and most endearing trends for throwing a playfully extravagant after-the-ceremony bash! 3 Personalized gobos (goes before optics). Think hologrammed initials in several forms, including metal and steel. Initials are huge right now and etching your newly acquired love letters onto everything from napkins, to wine bottles and then projecting them onto a screen at the reception is the latest in sharing your official status as Mr. and Mrs. with beloved family and friends. “Having a projector really helps to create atmosphere,” according to Diamonds DJ Services, Bill Yorke. 3 Sugar and spice. Cake pops have made an appearance at receptions in all colours and flavours, along with the emergence of the deliciously festive candy bars. The candy bar is for the sweet tooth partygoer. Candy in all forms, dreamily reminiscent of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, are enticing guests like the promise of a golden ticket!

3 The popcorn bar. What better way to warm guests up during cocktail hour — or keep them dancing until midnight — than introducing them to bags of popcorn, or the show-stopping popcorn cart! Flavours for every delight (think salty and sweet) in delectable colours (adding a playful element to your decor) offer something for everyone and promise to heighten the vibrancy, memorability and magic of your big celebration. 3 The cookie bar. Cookies, muffins and even chocolatey doughnuts are offering tantalizing pairing options for champagne, wine and even the traditional beer, so don’t rule them out over classic hors d’oeuvres! 3 The dynamic DJ. Hiring an amazing DJ is important, so make sure to find someone dedicated to keeping the party hopping. “I try to create an amazing atmosphere by surrounding myself with good people and being interactive with the crowd. Entertainment can be seen as a ten-hour affair — the more interactive it is, the better to engage the crowd and use technology in a way that keeps them moving right to the end,” said DJ Bill.

3 Light it up. Part of Bill’s unique services also include providing enhancement lighting. “Lighting can really change the atmosphere of a tent, or change the colour to enhance and playfully alter the mood throughout the evening.” 3 Order in. Couples are having weddings all over the Columbia Valley and a lot of the time that means calling out for pizza. “This is a destination wedding location, so people want to taste the flavour of the valley and that means ordering in “Peppi’s Pizza, or specifically requesting valley favourites like Arrowhead beer.” 3 The right libation for every taste. Signature cocktails are everywhere this season. Choosing a signature cocktail representative of your relationship is a playful way to start off the evening. “Sometimes it’s a more traditional champagne, or a Corona for the groom. One couple had Caesars specifically, because that was their favourite drink. At a wedding it’s really important to do what you love,” said Leanne Brooks, owner of Lucky in Love wedding planning and the Columbia Valley Bartenders. Having professional bartenders and appropriate glassware is essential, she added. 3 Pleasing the mob. Flash mobs are popping up all over these days. “I saw a 10 to 12 person flash mob erupt on the dance floor,” said Leanne. “It was super-exciting and super-fun!” So feel free to spice up the party with impromptu flash mobs, and all types of zany and playful alternatives to your traditional setting! 3 Let the games begin. Wedding games are becoming increasingly popular as they really help liven up the atmosphere at the reception. Couples seated back-to-back on the dance floor must correctly answer intimate details of their lives together — the one with the most correct answers is entitled to favours granted from their partner throughout the reception. Or anyone who would like the newlyweds to kiss will have to do a quick boogey on the dance floor — you know this game will produce some laughs!

destination weddings 3

Tune out traditions Getting married is steeped in tradition, and sometimes it’s to the point where, as the bride and groom, you might start to feel as though you don’t have any say over how your big day should unfold! But as more and more weddings deviate from white lace and formal rituals, it’s becoming increasingly acceptable (and even a little expected) to go out on a limb and deliver the unexpected for your closest friends and family to enjoy. Here are some playful ways to make your wedding day a little unusual, a lot of fun, and totally hip!

combinations, enhancing her sense of style and allowing each of her special participants to express their unique individuality. Pulling it off with ease and style requires a few subtle tricks, like keeping the dresses in the same colour family, or the same length. 3 You don’t have to come up with a cake. Candied favourites, cupcakes, cake pops and even popcorn are being featured instead of a traditional cake. Get creative with your sweet tooth to personalize your celebration! 3 Gone are the times when you have to avoid each other like the plague. Brides and grooms no longer have to hide from each other on the big day. It’s perfectly posh to see your sweetie

on the day of. Spending time together can relieve wedding day anxiety and allow for some pre-ceremony snuggle time, delicious cocktails, and face time with your photographer for a priceless pre-wedding photo session.

doesn’t have to be the signature colour anymore. Unconventional hues are making an appearance all over the wedding scene and on runways — ivory, blush and champagne are the new favourites. The go-to classics are being replaced by bolder, more fun and more daring shades of all kinds, including black, red, orange, green and blue. 3 Congruous bridesmaids dresses are out. 3 Remember, different strokes for different folks make for a dynamic

and diverse wedding party. Dare to be different — don’t be afraid to change up your wedding party. If your best gal is a guy, make him your man of honour, or feel free to change that up with a niece, uncle, cousin, your grandparents or even a beloved pet (well, maybe save the pet as a ring bearer). These alternate choices can also stand up as attendants, so you can have the best of the best at your side! 3 Forego the somewhat dreaded bouquet toss. Bouquets are being thrown over for the new tradition of anniversary dances. All seasoned couples must strike it out on the dance floor with the bride and groom as the DJ serenades the happily ever afters. One by one, couples are sent off depending on the longevity of their marriage. The last couple standing is honoured and recognized as the longest married couple and is granted the much coveted bouquet. 3 Walk down the aisle to the beat of your own drummer. Have both of your parents walk you down the aisle to give them the equal attention they both deserve for a lifetime of devotion and commitment to you. Walk in with your beloved, or shout your independence from the rooftops by walking in solo. Abdicate tradition completely and do away with the aisle all together. All brides are diverse — and breaking from the rules offers a nice solution to

some particularly delicate situations like a father who has passed away. 3 Guests no longer have to experience the awkwardness of choosing the right side. Sides for seating are no longer an issue as guests are free to join the proverbial dark side and mingle with each other for an interesting mix of friends and family. Couples are also choosing to create alternative seating arrangements to allow for a more intimate experience and a better view of the vow exchange. 3 Do you really need a registry for cutlery? The sky’s the limit with your registry — gone are the days when brides registered at Sears. Today’s playful bride is free to use her “registry gift rights” for any and all needs, wants and desires, whether it be furniture, workout gear or that coveted media room complete with a projector, surround sound and a theatre — with a wet bar thrown in for good measure! 3 Traditional diamonds don’t have to be a girl’s best friend. The coloured diamond is in. Think yellow, blue, rose, or alternative stones and settings such as sapphires, topaz, peridot, gothic, vintage, stacked or any conceivable design under the sun. Designing your own rings is never out of style and finding the right jeweller to make your anything-but-traditional ring truly sparkle is all part of the grand adventure!

A festive cakewalk

love. light. captured.

Wedding cakes have come a long way since the tradition, in one of its earliest forms, began in Ancient Rome where bread was broken over the bride’s head to bring good fortune to the couple. Today, master cake creators use a plethora of ingredients and tools to design cakes that reflect the personalities of the couple tying the knot. “It is truly the year of wedding cakes — the wedding cakes I’ve seen are so individual and different…the trend right now seems to be that everybody is having a personalized affair,” said Peter Banga of The Bakery in Invermere. “The cake ideas are very interesting, reflecting the common theme that there’s not one type of cake, or even a cake at all.” If you’ve decided that your big occasion isn’t complete without a wedding cake, take note of the following trends to guarantee your cake will be the stand-out centrepiece of your post-ceremony spread. 3 Shift your focus. Asymmetrical designs have taken the spotlight.

10

Moving the tiers of your cake to one side offers a unique, dynamic and playful way to turn traditional designs upside down, or to one side at least. 3 Avant-garde and over the top. The cake with the most cutting-edge look seems to be the hit of the season, whether it’s glamorous and chic, or boasting classic pearls, handcrafted tiers or dramatic contrasts. Think black ridging on an ivory base, or complementary colours from the colour wheel such as these delectable combinations: silver, pearl and lilac; jade, turquoise and violet; silver, pearl and black; or blue, robin’s egg and lime. Using a neutral tone can be a great way of combining experimental colours that might not be obvious matches at first glance. Columbia Valley Weddings 2015

3 Stack it on. From the piling of rounds

and squares for dramatic heights to the eccentric, fresh and inspired designs of one’s own creation is to be expected and desired for the most playful of weddings. This modern showpiece will not only set the stage for some interesting cake-cutting techniques, but will impress your artistic guests beyond measure. Who said pieces of art were just for galleries? 3 Monochrome colour. Think purple, pink, blue, green, black and dare to imagine a cheeky solid that will anchor the eye and light up the room. These solid coloured cakes will go down in bridal history, creating a visual feast to make your décor pop and mouths water simultaneously. 3 Blank canvas. This crisp all white statement making cake, featuring blanc on blanc inspires a modern feel. Play it up by adding designs to the fondant, allowing for texture, dimension and star gazing delight. 3 Leave the cake. Cupcakes have laid siege to the traditional cake, or lack thereof. Stunning cupcakes in every colour, design and flavour shock guests into food coma submission, as they dare to feast upon these

trendy non-traditional delights. Don’t be bashful, try Sweet Dreams — a dreamy orange flavoured cupcake bursting with a whipped centre and topped off with a gorgeous orange butter cream. 3 Multi-flavoured. Have your cake and eat it too. Having up to three flavours of cake can be a tantalizing way to spice up your variety and offer a little something to each of the guests. You can be a little wild and go for a gourmet flavour like the candy bar, made of either white or chocolate cake and bursting at the seams with your candy bar of choice, then generously frosted with a to-die-for white or chocolate butter cream, saturated with chopped candy bars and drizzled with glorious mounds of chocolate to finish it off. Or dazzle your guests’ tastebuds with strawberry champagne — white cake drenched in champagne, gorged with fresh strawberries, submerged in a divine strawberry filling and smothered with champagne butter cream. Add colour sprinkles to your hearts delight. 3 The world is your oyster on this one, so don’t be afraid to play it up! Gluten-free and dairy-free options are also a big hit.

A Sparkling Affair

Carmen and Adam at Copper Point Resort in Invermere Kyla Brown Photography

The stunningly beautiful bride Carmen was gracious, poised and completely comfortable on her wedding day. The former dancer and accountant by profession married the love of her life and best friend Adam (also an accountant) at Copper Point Resort in the middle of August, amidst a myriad of friends and family. Carmen really emphasized the importance of spending time with her guests, and making sure that everyone was comfortable and happy. “We really made a weekend of it — the beauty of it was that everyone was there for multiple days. Adam’s family is from Scotland, so we figured if they were going to trek all the way to Western Canada, halfway around the world, then we would be happy if they had a few days before and after the wedding to enjoy the beautiful mountains and get to know each other.” The bride decided on an elegantly neutral palette, but made sure she sported a pair of sparkly pink sky-high heels on her big day. “I just love heels and I have a deep love of pink,” she admitted. “I chose my palette with ivory and pops of colour (pinks, greens and purples), except for some cotton candy pink ties and socks chosen by Adam — and the different coloured shoes were Adam’s idea. I

12

wanted to keep it as neutral as possible, because I didn’t want to be limited to one thing and could use the décor any way I wanted.” The choice of flowers for the day was full succulents. “The succulents were transported from Saskatoon to the wedding by my mom. She drove them out the day of. She’s a total rock star and helped a ton!” On the amazing dress: “I bought my dress from an Airdrie store called Taffeta and Tulle, completely off the rack.” Though not couture, as one might suspect upon first glance, the gorgeous gown complimented Carmen's dancer’s figure and natural flowing locks perfectly. For the wedding bash, the couple followed their hearts in terms of planning, and made all the decisions 50/50. “We focused on what was important: there was no wedding cake, or bouquet/ garter toss," Carmen said. “We weren’t all about wedding traditions; just making sure that we were happy with everything.” “Two things really stood out for me on the day: Adam’s reaction to me when I was walking down the aisle (he cried) and my dad’s reaction when he saw me (he also cried) and I was kind of like, not now.” The couple ensured they had fun, tasty keepsakes for their guests: a mini bottle of Martini Asti champagne from Carmen, which is her favourite drink, and Adam’s choice was Captain Morgan’s spiced rum. Columbia Valley Weddings 2015

“We wrapped them up and we gave them away, so people could enjoy them the next day.” For the couple’s first dance they chose Brad Paisley’s “I thought I loved you then”. “We tried to find other songs, but this song just reminded us of each other and we decided that this is what the song had to be,” Carmen reminisced. “After our dance the floor was full, so it was so worth it — I breathed a sigh of relief. I was really happy and excited that it was fun and packed!”

Columbia Valley Weddings 2015

The adventurous pair decided to get married in the Columbia Valley because Adam’s family has a place in Invermere. “It was the scenery — this is the place that Adam and I love, we always come here on the weekends from Calgary for a mini getaway and to get to the beautiful mountains.” Adam proposed to Carmen in Paris (they love to travel) and the pair are planning to travel to St. Lucia for their honeymoon. They have just one thing to say about being married: “I married my best friend, he/ she is super-intelligent, hilarious, and the person I’m happy to see every day!”

documentation 3

Digital designs Wedding documentaries and the cutting edge of filmmaking for today’s playful wedding. The world of wedding photography has taken on a new life form in the digital realm, offering playful couples a myriad of exciting options to document their grand occasion. And photographers in the Columbia Valley are using the latest in wedding documentation technology. 3 The Wedding Short. After doing some careful experimentation (on her own children), local photographer Tracy Connery created Stop Motion Films, an extension of her photography business that embraces the interwoven fabrics of multimedia. Cornering a much desired piece of the pie, Tracy has manifested a short wedding documentary that captures the big day in a fun and stylish way. The experimental medium of wedding mini docs is a niche all on its own, and one that’s thriving in the valley. Old and the new, something borrowed... something digital. “It gives the bride an alternative and quirky option,” said Tracy. “Often the wedding can be a blur, so it’s nice to be able to offer another visual element. My clients have said that by watching the film, it was like re-living their big day.” 3 The Photo Booth. The playfully freestanding booth has been exceedingly popular for the past three to four years and it seems to be gaining momentum with the party crowd. Cool props including glasses, wigs, boas and masks create a party-focused element

Tracy Connery Photography

that caters to everyone in a creative and fun way, allowing the guests to let loose, shake it up and strike a pose! Hooking it up to Facebook and Instagram permits instant world-wide access and gratification. Photo booths are a great alternative at the reception for guests who don’t like to dance and the different take on traditional photographs will ensure your wedding album is an innovative and entertaining one. 3 Digital Files and Drones. Kimberley Rae Sanderson is offering her clients some exciting new digital options. As a way to circumvent pixelated images resulting from couples enlarging low resolution files on their own (which can blur and warp the image), Kimberley decided to offer high resolution digital files to her clientele. “I’ve seen people blow images up and it just distorts them — it’s a bit of a battle to educate couples on file sizes, so offering large digital files gives them the option to do what they want with the images.” Drone imaging is taking off in the wedding industry for those who can afford the upscale pricing, according to the local wedding photographer. “The drone is offering aerial views,” she said. “Basically, it’s a mini-helicopter at the wedding; it’s a nice option.” 3 Less Is More. Unnatural Instagram-like pictures were taking over the wedding industry at one point when couples and photographers were leaning toward overly processed images. There is currently a retroactive movement of putting some emphasis on analog photography to create natural-looking images on the web or in a priceless photo album. “I show them what’s possible with the album and it gives them a chance to physically experience their day,” Kimberley said. A leather-bound masterpiece is a tactile and lasting book of wonderful memories. “It’s a beautiful keepsake that everyone can enjoy.”

flowers 3

A gorgeous new flower trend is turning heads this season with a modern take on a classic bouquet arrangement. Playful brides everywhere have reinvented the classically tightly woven cascade bouquet and opted for a free moving, wilder and simply greener bouquet. “The trend is very natural. A lot of brides wanted the bouquet to look like they were out in the field and that they gathered their own flowers — they wanted things poking out or hanging down and lots of greens,” said Joanne Broadfoot of Canterbury Flowers in Invermere. The naturally bohemian look being favoured is largely the result of a generous combination of field greens, seeded succulents, branches and vines. Curious brides have taken a walk on the wild side and thrown caution to the wind — literally! No longer is the perfectly polished symmetrical look for a wedding a necessity. It has been replaced by bolder coloured bouquets, loosely arranged centrepieces, flower crowns made of the once under-represented gem (baby’s breath) and even champagne, green and orange-hued dresses to match the darling blushes of the star flower of the season — the fashionable and peony-like garden rose. “The big flower of the year is the garden rose,” said Joanne. “It has a wonderful fragrance and comes in every colour, ivory, yellow, all the pinks and a deep red.” As one of the hottest flowers on display, the much coveted floral beauty has inspired some trends both in the garden and in fashion, mimicked in some of the top alternative dress colours of the season, including champagnes, pinks, oranges, black and a vintage ivory. The darker hued bouquet has also made its grand entrance. A bride inspired by bold wine, dark chocolate and a starry mountain midnight sky can create a moody look with a sultry looking bouquet as a signature piece. Onlookers have been dazzled with dramatic hues of blue, orange, red, purple and even a hint of gothic with the emboldened smouldering look of them all — the show stopping black flower. Even the boutonnieres are seeing moody tones to match the boldly coloured lush bouquets and other subtle nuances, like brightly coloured jewelry and shoes. Again think greens, reds, pinks, blues and royal purples. According to Joanne, “these rich colours really offset the wedding dress.” Baby’s breath (also known as gypsophilia) is the sleeper hit flower that has been recently reintroduced. Clusters of this gorgeous, affordable and reminiscent-of-heaven flower have been seen on all types of wedding accessories including the angelic-looking crowns for flower girls. “Baby’s breath was huge this year for the bridal bouquets and centrepieces; it outstripped all the others. ” And today’s playful bride is creative-adventurous, opting to use everyday mason and canning jars for the base of the centrepiece, which frees up the budget for splurging in other areas. “We provide loose flowers and guidance — it’s a huge money saver if you create your own centrepieces, so you can get a bigger cake or put more into the wedding bouquet.”

A wheels-inspired wedding “Our wedding was a blast!” This was the first thing Kali had to say about marrying her sweetheart Kris at their gorgeously zany and extremely playful wedding at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort this past summer. “Our whole goal was to have a fun day and to celebrate; it didn’t matter if it was slightly not perfect. I realized I couldn’t control every little thing, so I was happy.” The high school sweethearts, who reside in Calgary, have been together for nine and a half years and chose to get married in the valley after a slightly quirky proposal in Banff, where Kali put her own engagement ring on the wrong finger out of excitement. “We’ve been coming out here for over seven years, and we always stay at the Fairmont campground with family and friends in twenty trailers. We love it, so we said what better place to get married than out here.” The couple chose a clean, bright and colourful wedding style, modelled after Kris’ first love — his silver, purple, yellow and orange truck named Jimmy. The reception hall was lit up with warmly coloured hanging lanterns and

the bridesmaids all wore purple sweetheart maxi dresses in honour of his beloved car. “After twelve years, Jimmy is still around — I always joke that Jimmy was Kris’ first love and I’m his second,” acknowledged Kali on the inspiration behind her palette choices and bold decision to deter from strict traditions on her wedding day. “We chose a giant cupcake instead of a cake, which was really fun, and I painted twenty canvases grey with different sayings on them and scattered them throughout the room.” The dance floor was no different as the daring pair blazed the night away in high style. “We changed into high top sneakers on the dance floor — mine were white and had sparkles on them and Kris’ were in Jimmy-style.” The pair rocked the party with their first dance to Lee Brice’s “I don’t dance”, commemorating Kris’ fear and general lack of know-how in terms of dancing. The blushing bride had one thing to say about the entire wedding process and keeping it playful. “Pick what you and your partner want, work together. Once it’s the big day, don’t worry about the little things that no one else will see and just enjoy it! I married my best friend, nothing has really changed — it’s still us together.”

Deliciously vintage-style

Kelsey designed her own vintage-style dress. After deconstructing and reassembling a gorgeous tea length dress from her grandmother in Manitoba, Kelsey vacuum-packed and travelled the promising item to Australia (where the couple resides; Andrew is an Aussie while Kelsey is a homegrown Manitoban). “I never entertained buying a dress; as a textile designer I always knew I would make my own,” she said. “At home in Byron Bay with much help from my mother-in-law (to-be at the time), we picked it apart, pressed it and, with so much luck, had more

Columbia Valley Weddings 2015

than enough material to recreate my dress with the vintage lace.” Kelsey described the sensational piece as a fifties dress with a huge crinoline that matched her chosen colours to perfection. She said she selected soft colours that she’s always loved, such as soft peaches, mints, butter yellows and vintage blues. “The green that you see in the pictures is actually a frothy crinoline that only showed when I was walking, or dancing,” she said. “It added an element of cheek to the dress and tied it nicely into the wedding decor.” To achieve the nostalgic look of the day and to create a light and breezy ambience, the couple opted for a vintage-style picnic after the classic ceremony. “Our wedding day was perfect. We had beautiful warm weather and no wind. The maid of honour and I arrived in style, in an old, shining, robin’s egg blue Ford Galaxy and glided across the Sky High Bridge at Spirits Reach to the groom and guests waiting below at the lake’s edge.” The elegant and relaxed party was held in the backyard of the Bella Vista reception hall. “We used picnic tables with vintage tea cloth overlays and linen napkins with lovely peo-

nies and roses in bottles and crystal bud vases.” A pretty little retro caravan converted into a bar, delicious buffet-style catering by From Scratch and DQ ice cream for dessert rounded out the playful offerings.

Award-winning combinations include choosing a principle colour and pairing it with an accent colour, such as the standout colour of the season — grey! Every shade of grey is being luxuriously paired with any conceivable counterpart in the colour wheel. 3 Opposing sides. When viewing the colour wheel, complementary colours are placed opposite of each other. This allows the naked eye to capture the “better together” combination of warm and cool hues. Choosing bold opposites like angelic golds and delicate blues makes for some of the most visually stunning eye candy combinations in design, providing a visual feast that proves opposites really do attract. 3 Other favourable combinations of the season include pairing two

distinct but complementary colours with a neutral. Consider bold brown, pearl and robin’s egg; or, for a defining and nuanced look that embellishes the beauty of a particular shade, stick with an analogous theme and pick three seamless colours from the same family on the colour wheel (baby blue, turquoise and aqua, for example). 3 Adding a bit of texture. Mixing it up and layering is of the utmost importance in creating a visual masterpiece. Implement different textures and colours like champagne linens with an ivory lace overlay and delicate bone china with handcrafted enamels and gilding can really enhance your decor and add dimension — and ensure that your celebration is anything but flat. Motifs can be realized with the careful contrasting and layering of patterns such as plaid and toile in complementary tones, capturing the unique character reflective of your personality. Mood, colour, emotion and fun can all be conveyed by using these techniques. 3 White chic. An all-white wedding provides a blank canvas to paint your big day on. White allows you to use your decor to define the style of your wedding, whether it be classic, modern, vintage, romantic, or eclectic. Remember to add plenty of textures and layering to create dimension as discussed above. 3 All aglow. Lighting is one of the essential ways to transform your space and create a defining mood. The beauty of using lights is that you can choose colours outside of your palette to create a complementary glow. Shades of pink, lovely skin tones and soft blushes can be used for a romantic feeling, alternated with different hues throughout the evening to signal the shift from dinner, to speeches, to party. Dare to envision cool and sophisticated vibes created with blues and purples, sublimely contrasted with the warmer and bolder hues of red and orange to let guests know it’s time to let loose.

Picture perfect Taking good care of your health and beauty in advance with a little dedication and careful planning will help keep you calm, relaxed and sparkling for your vows. Beauty starts on the inside. Proper nutrition, rest, water and (dare it be said) exercise will keep you feeling comfortable and zen, and help you reach your beauty goals for your wedding, whether that’s clear and smooth skin, toned arms and legs, or just a youthful glow. “I always recommend that the client make good lifestyle choices as part of her beauty regiment, prior to the big day,” said Fusion Wellness Spa owner, Barbara Cullen. Proper skin care, whether that’s implementing a more aggressive approach to your normal beauty routine (medical facials), or adding a few extras to target problem areas such as mild acne, are essential. Planning is imperative and creating a strategy to cater to your needs early on will not only glean lasting benefits, but will help you reach your optimal look for the day of. Hair and makeup, scrubs, manis-pedis, facials and every kind of service that will help illuminate the appearance of the skin,” said Barbara. “It’s so important that the bride and groom look and feel their absolute best.” A luscious body treatment is encouraged the day before tackling hair and makeup — whether it’s body scrubs, wraps or mud facials. “We recommend the customized facial, it’s 75 minutes and treats the lips and eyes, it exfoliates and rehydrates. The same with our organic body wrap; it also involves the exfoliation process.” These relaxing and enhancing procedures really help slough off

the dead skin and make the body baby-soft and smooth, while hydrating for that scrubbed and rejuvenated head-to-toe finish. “Fusion is a wellness spa, so we only use organic, natural and mineral based products,” Barbara said. “We use Jardin, which is make-up to the stars, because it’s the best and it’s also made of tree roots.” Planning for hair and make-up is essential. “It can take a few tries to find the right hair and make-up styles and we want the bride to be very, very happy with her look. A bride might want a smoky eye, but when she sees that look and listens to the recommendations we offer, she might go with something else completely.” Loose braids for the bohemian look, side buns and beach hair is really in right now. Keeping it light, natural, effervescent and simply gorgeous is everything in wedding beauty. Time management is also key — a perfect bride must be prepared! “It’s usually a month-long process getting the bride ready for her wedding (including finalizing any changes to the hair, colour and cut, etc). This includes style planning, a trial session, the day of schedule concessions, number of people in the bridal party, including mother of the bride and co-ordinating travel time to locations,” said Dayna Dearin, owner of Invermere’s Shear Edge Hair Studio. The importance of knowing your own hair is everything in finding a style that will work with your hair type, according to Dayna, as well as conceding to the architecture of the dress, whether it be strapless, mermaid, or Grecian-modern. And don’t forget about the beloved bridal party. “When choosing bridesmaids’ styles, you want them to be complimentary — you never want them to overshadow the bride’s hair,” said Dayna. “If a bride has her hair up, then the bridesmaids can have a similar style, but maybe it’s down and curly.” Having a polished look is important. Finding a stylist who will fight to achieve your look like it was her own wedding day is the goal when choosing your styling professionals. “When I’m doing someone’s hair, I pretend that it’s my own hair,” Dayna said. “I want my space to be comfortable and calming while I’m working and if I don’t love what I’ve done, then I won’t let the bride walk out of here.”
