Welcome to

...from Tourism Radium Thank you for visiting our beautiful village nestled at the southern entrance to Kootenay National Park. All of our local residents and businesses take great pride in their commitment to ensure your hospitality expectations will be met during your time in Radium Hot Springs. I encourage you to take advantage of the wonderful activities, services and events that are available throughout the year in Radium Hot Springs. We have a friendly, walkable community that offers affordable accommodations and a full range of restaurants to meet all of your dining needs. The knowledgeable staff at the Visitor Information Centre are happy to offer many suggestions that will allow you to experience how “The Mountains Shall Bring Peace to the

People.” For those wanting to pursue mountain peace, you will find mountain trails and hikes starting right here in the village. The backcountry to the west of Radium Hot Springs offers activities for all four seasons: breathtaking views of the spectacular Columbia River Wetlands; camping in one of the three campgrounds located within the village boundary; fishing at one of the many different backcountry lakes; the many sanctioned mountain biking trails; and winter snowmobiling trails that take you to our magnificent glacier bowls. As you spend your time in Radium, we want you to “Find your peace.”

President of Tourism Radium Hot Springs Association

... from the Mayor Welcome to the Village of Radium Hot Springs. We are: Authentic. Connected. Self-sufficient. Beautiful. Compact. An environmental steward. Radium is a small, close-knit mountain village that is personable and personal. Radium feels like a best friend. Radium is an all-natural, spiritual therapist for souls needing escape from an overbearing world. Rejuvenation is quieter, more intimate — a purposeful slow-down that inspires creativity and zest for life. By another name, we call that feeling a spa, but this one is bigger: Radium-sized. We’re not festooned with chain establishments and 4 • R a dium H ot Sp r i n g s Vi s i t o r G u i d e 2 0 1 3 /2 01 4

boilerplate service. We are the real deal… a simpler time in the imagination where social manners, social graces and “do unto others” was a time-honoured tradition. In Radium, we honour the traditions and nurture them while moving forward in our ambitious effort to build a humble, relaxed, sustainable mountain community “Where Everybody Knows Your Name.” Take a look at our sheep — even the wildlife feels tight-knit. So welcome to Radium! We hope you enjoy your stay with us and we hope you “Find your own peace” as we have all found ours.

About the village The Village of Radium Hot Springs was incorporated as a municipality on December 10, 1990. The village is located in the gorgeous Columbia Valley, nestled between the Purcell Mountains, the Rockies and the gateway to beautiful Kootenay National Park. The village is bordered by the Columbia River Wetlands, the largest continuous wetlands in North America. Radium Hot Springs is home to 1,000 year-round residents, and many more residents from out of town make this their second home as often as they can. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy a lifestyle second to none. With the village council’s commitment to making the village a “walking town,” individuals can enjoy walking the many trails and paths located throughout Radium. With golfing, skiing, hiking, whitewater rafting, canoeing, birdwatching, fishing, snowmobiling and many other activities available in and around the Radium Hot Springs, it is easy to see why this four-season village is a favourite place to visit and especially to call home!

History of Radium The Radium Hot Springs story is as old as the Rockies. The story began with the unleashing of powerful forces that left its tale in heaving, tortured rocks. The earth’s crust cracked along a fault, more than two kilometres deep. The shatter zone around the fault lets groundwater seep close to the earth’s core — heating, pressurizing and returning it to the surface. Prior to any development by settlers of European descent, the local First Nations peoples found the hot and odourless mineral water issuing from the rocks at the base of Redstreak Mountain to be soothing and healing for their aches and pains. The first legally-registered owner other than the Crown (government) was Roland Stuart, an Englishman who purchased the springs in 1890 for $160 and owned them until 1922. A group of Englishmen headed by Lord Northcote began construction of the first pool prior to 1914. Their efforts were halted by the outbreak of World War I. The Canadian government took over and the hot pool and the first log bathhouse were completed in 1923. 

Bighorn sheep

VILLAGE HISTORY

Bighorn sheep (ovis canadensis) are a famous attraction for Radium Hot Springs. During late October and early November, they can be seen around the village partaking in their famous head-banging ritual and rutting activities. The horns from a male bighorn sheep can grow to be up to 127 centimetres long (50 inches). Adult rams grow to be about 100 cm (40 inches) tall and weigh between 90 and 135 kilograms (200 to 300 pounds). A ewe, a female bighorn sheep, also grows horns, but these are much smaller than the ram’s horns. The sheep do migrate throughout the year. During the spring and summer, the sheep move higher into the mountains to lamb. During the fall and winter, the sheep are seen around town and along the highway towards Invermere.

The Springs 25th Anniversary 1988 – 2013

The 17th green at The Springs in Radium.

The Springs Golf Course is located on the plateau along the western edge of the Village of Radium Hot Springs. Both the golf course and clubhouse offer breathtaking views of the Columbia River wetlands and the Rocky and Purcell mountain ranges, and the opportunity for wildlife sightings — particularly the eagles soaring high above and the mountain sheep grazing along the golf course edges. As well as offering a scenic golf setting, this sheltered location allows for an extensive golf season beginning in March and continuing through into October. Construction of the golf course began in 1987 under the direction of Les Furber, a well-known Canadian golf course architect who was highly influenced by the renowned course designer, Robert Trent Jones. In the beginning, the most was made of the spectacular terrain, setting up each hole to offer both extraordinary golf shots and beautiful views. To this day, the Springs maintains a “strong balance between playability and challenge; playable but not penal, challenging but not intimidating.” The golf course opened in early summer of 1988 under the name of The Springs Golf and Country Club and today is simply called The Springs. The Springs is consistently ranked as one of the top public golf courses to play in British Columbia and is situated at the beginning of the Columbia Valley Golf Trail, which boasts nine excellent golf courses within a 35-minute radius. Enjoy the Springs in a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere with attentive service, a well-stocked golf shop and one of the best practice facilities in Western Canada. The three CPGA/LPGA certified golf professionals are available to provide golf instruction for new and experienced golfers alike. Private and group clinics are offered throughout the season. The course yardage is 5,163 from the forward tees to 6,767 12 • R a dium H o t S p r i n g s Vi s i t o r G u i d e 2 0 1 3 /20 1 4

from the tips and plays to a par 72. The large, undulating greens are excellent putting surfaces, making the Springs a golf course you will want to return to time and again! In addition to offering memberships at the Springs, the course welcomes public play. Tee times booked at 10-minute intervals allow golfers to experience a fluid golf round with minimal delays — just time enough to enjoy one of the best hot dogs and a beverage at the halfway house. The Springs is managed under the Radium Resort Limited Partnership umbrella along with the Resort golf course, hotel and banquet facilities just five minutes south of the Village of Radium Hot Springs on Highway 93/95. The Resort course was established in 1957 as one of the first golf courses in the Columbia Valley. Under the direction of another well-known Canadian golf course architect and Radium Resort President Bill Newis, the Resort course is currently undergoing a master re-development plan and, in the summer of 2012, opened the first phase with three new golf holes. These new golf holes brought the Resort course up to a yardage of 6,071 and a par 71. Golfers enjoy unforgettable mountain vistas and spectacular elevation changes on the Resort course as their shots are captured against the Rocky Mountains backdrop. The Radium Resort hotel facilities with a swimming pool, fitness centre and spa are located right on the golf course with each balcony having a view of the enchanting beauty of this mountain golf course setting. Many Radium Resort hotel guests welcome the shuttle service between the Springs and the Resort courses — two completely different golf course experiences with the same great service. The Canadian Rocky Mountains are home to both grizzly and black bears. Bears need access to good quality habitat, a safe place to raise their young and freedom to move through large home ranges with as few obstacles and human disturbances as possible to survive. You can run into a bear anywhere, be it on a busy trail close to town or in the remote backcountry. Bears generally prefer to avoid people, however, encounters between bears and people do occur. Knowing how to avoid an encounter with a bear is the best way to enjoy the outdoors safely:

Prepare Carry bear spray and know how to handle an encounter.

Be aware Look ahead and watch for tracks, droppings, and diggings.

Let bears know you’re there Travel in a group and make noise. For more information about hiking in bear country, speak the Parks Canada staff at the Kootenay National Park Visitor Centre or visit www.parkscanada.gc.ca/bears-and-people.

Fireweed along Floe Lake Trail in Kootenay National Park.

Kootenay National Park Easy access to the outdoor wonders of Kootenay National Park is one of the highlights of spending time in Radium Hot Springs. Established in 1920 around plans for the BanffWindermere Highway (today Highway 93 South), Kootenay National Park has an extremely diverse ecology, climate and geography. Glacier-clad peaks line the continental divide in the north, while the southern semi-arid grasslands provide a warm, dry home for prickly pear cactus and bighorn sheep. Alongside Jasper, Yoho and Banff National Parks, and Mount Robson, Hamber and Mount Assiniboine Provincial Parks, Kootenay is part of the 20,000-km² Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kootenay National Park boasts a variety of picnic sites, hiking trails, breathtaking viewpoints, hidden backcountry treasures and three seasonal campgrounds. During the summer, Parks Canada interpreters lead guided hikes and offer hands-on learning programs.

Kootenay’s wildlife includes bighorn sheep, moose, bears, coyotes and numerous bird species. Wildlife often grazes and travels alongside roadways. Be alert and pull well off the highway when stopping to view wildlife. Remember to view from a distance — it is illegal to approach, feed or harass wildlife. A daily or annual pass is required when stopping in the Mountain National Parks. All of the money collected goes towards park improvements, trail maintenance, interpretation and information services. Camping requires separate permits. A National Parks fishing licence is required for all anglers. For more information about visiting Kootenay National Park, please visit www.parkscanada.gc.ca/kootenay. Park entry passes and fishing permits can be purchased from the park entry gate and the Kootenay National Park Visitor Centre. R adium Ho t Spr ings Visito r Guide 2 0 1 3 /2 0 14 • 25

Invermere Panorama Destination Marketing Organization Just 14 kilometres south of Radium Hot Springs is the stunning lakeside community of Invermere on the Lake framed by some of the best natural beauty in the Kootenays — the Rockies to the east and Purcell Mountains to the west. Another 18 kilometres up from Invermere, along a winding, scenic country road, is the world-class Panorama Mountain Village ski resort. Both destinations provide a wealth of year-round activities for all ages and inclinations. A typical summer afternoon can range from participating in an art workshop in Invermere’s quaint downtown to 18 holes on one of the Columbia Valley’s many world-class golf courses. Water-lovers can rent canoes, kayaks or paddle boards, or catch a guided trip down the Columbia River from Invermere to Radium. From horseback riding to whitewater rafting, quad tours to hiking and sightseeing by chair lift at Panorama, there truly is something for everyone. “It’s really a special place for families and people just looking to get away from it all to relax and reconnect!” says Ken Wilder, Executive Director at Invermere Panorama Destination Marketing Organization. “With so many activities, there’s enough to keep everyone busy.” Summers in Invermere and Panorama also feature worldclass events such as the Branch Out Bike Tour fundraiser from Panorama to Invermere, the Grizzly Ultra Marathon & Relay at Panorama Mountain Village, as well as the annual Loop the Lake running race and Summerlude Festival, which features a variety of events including Bull Riding in the Rockies and free pancake breakfast in

downtown Invermere. Don’t miss the weekly Invermere Farmers’ Market on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the village stroll with shops, cafes and galleries on Invermere’s vibrant main street. There are many excellent visitor accommodation options at both locales. On the lake at Invermere, Lake Windermere Point offers stunning lake views, or rent a condo or cabin with High Country Properties Vacation Rentals or at one of the many vacation properties within reach. Great options include the new Copper Point Resort at the edge of town or the Best Western right on 7th Avenue. At Panorama Mountain Village, which offers family, golfing and mountain bike packages, a wide range of choices is also available, from ski chalets and lodges to hotels and condo rentals. From pubs and cafés to fine dining, the culinary scene in Invermere and at the mountain is also noteworthy. Check out Strand’s Old House Restaurant or live music at Angus McToogles, or maybe at the Mile One Hut at the top of the Mile One quad chairlift at Panorama. In the winter, Panorama Mountain Village boasts one of largest vertical drops in North America along with free shuttles to and from Invermere all winter long. And don’t miss the chance to experience the signature Whiteway — groomed ice skating trails and nordic tracks around the frozen waters of Lake Windermere. For more information on Invermere on the Lake or Panorama Mountain Village, please visit www. InvermerePanorama.com.

Long before the arrival of European settlers, First Nations peoples came to soak in these warm waters. The hot springs were purchased in 1890, by an Englishman of the name Roland Stuart. Almost 25 years later, an analysis of the springs’ water found harmless traces of radon — a product of radium decomposition that gave the hot springs their name. In 1922, with construction on the Banff-Windermere Highway nearing completion as part of Kootenay National Park’s establishment, the hot springs were expropriated and made part of Canada’s tenth National Park. The decades that followed brought an

increase in tourism, the construction of a new 25-metre long cool pool, and numerous facility upgrades. Today, Radium Hot Springs is Canada’s largest hot springs facility. The pools offer visitors a full National Park experience like no other: spectacular canyon views, wildlife viewing opportunities, hiking, picnicking and strolling. The odourless hot springs let visitors bask in soothing mineral waters or enjoy wellness treatments at the facility’s day spa, Pleiades Massage and Spa. The spa features natural lighting in the treatments rooms, a steam room and plunge pool. More information about the Radium Hot Springs pools is available at www. hotsprings.ca or by calling 1-800-7671611. For appointments at Pleiades Massage and Spa, please call 1-866238-2923.

Columbia Valley Golf Trail

The Columbia Valley Golf Trail (CVGT) is a golfer’s paradise. With nine 18-hole golf courses within 35 minutes drive time of each other — three of which are ranked in the top 100 in Canada (ScoreGolf, 2012) — and with each course uniquely different than the last, it is easy to see why golf is a major attraction in the Columbia Valley. Located within the Village of Radium Hot Springs are two of the CVGT courses: The Springs at Radium, and Radium Resort. Both courses are owned and operated by Radium Resort Limited Partnership and offer golfers the best of mountain and valley golf with outstanding views and challenging play. The Springs at Radium has earned its reputation as one of Canada’s premier golf destinations and is consistently ranked as one of B.C.’s top courses. Playing The Springs course will put you in touch with local wildlife as the course is a part-time home to the local bighorn sheep and deer populations. Along many of the course’s holes, you will find dramatic views of the Columbia River wetlands, the Purcell Mountains, and hoodoo cliffs made of sand and silt. 2013 marks The Springs’ 25th Anniversary. Radium Resort is cut out of an alpine forest and features tight, tree-lined fairways, undulating greens, dramatic elevation changes and is a Columbia Valley favourite since 1957. With jaw-dropping vistas and spectacular elevation changes combined with playability, it’s easy to see why

32 • R a dium H o t S p r i n g s Vi s i t o r G u i d e 2 0 1 3 /20 1 4

the oldest course in the valley has withstood the test of time. With a number of exciting changes now completed, including three brand new holes on the back nine, the captivating Resort Course is perfectly positioned to satisfy golfers for another fifty years. Put the entire Columbia Valley Golf Trail to your test: Eagle Ranch Resort golf course features open fairways and 360-degree views of the valley, and is perched along ancient bluffs overlooking the Columbia River. This course ranks #97 in Canada (ScoreGolf, 2012). Greywolf Golf is located in a spectacular alpine setting at Panorama Mountain Village. It’s recognized by Golf Digest as one of the Top-100 Courses in the World Outside of the United States and ranks #22 in Canada (ScoreGolf, 2012). Copper Point – The Point, one of the newest championship courses in the Kootenay Rockies, harkens back to another era. The course is a natural, lay-of-the-land route with numerous classic elements. The architectural merit of this design warrants play on its own. Copper Point – The Ridge, the innovative design features full length Par 3 and Par 4 holes that maintain the perfect blend of playability and challenge. The course wraps around the spectacular new Copper Point Resort, offering magnificent views in every direction – including Mt. Nelson an iconic peak in the Purcell Mountain range. Windermere Valley exudes those rare elements of total relaxation and unpretentious golf in a first-rate setting. A walkable and open pastoral setting makes Windermere Valley a popular course for the whole family. Mountainside at Fairmont Hot Springs is pressed against the sunny, west-facing slopes of the Rockies with velvety fairways, views of Columbia Lake and a host of riveting holes that will test every club in your bag. Riverside at Fairmont Hot Springs, set along the mighty Columbia River, “a river runs through it” truly describes this spectacular contemporarily designed course, which is laced with memorable golf holes that showcase the striking nature of this property. The game of golf brings thousands of visitors to the Columbia Valley each year. The golf season starts around the end of March and goes until the end of October (course dependent). The courses themselves offer rugged mountain play to open pastoral settings, and with the challenge of roughly hewn bunkers, wildlife, hills and ravines, you’re sure to find your favorite course here. Plus, how about golfing and skiing in the same day? It happens here. Between the golf courses you are sure to discover warm water lakes, beautiful beaches, hot springs, adventure and a great golf vacation!
