About the village The Village of Radium Hot Springs was incorporated as a municipality on December 10, 1990. The village is located in the gorgeous Columbia Valley, nestled between the Purcell Mountains, the Rockies and the gateway to beautiful Kootenay National Park. The village is bordered by the Columbia River Wetlands, the largest continuous wetlands in North America. Radium Hot Springs is home to 1,000 year-round residents, and many more residents from out of town make this their second home as often as they can. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy a lifestyle second to none. With the village council’s commitment to making the village a “walking town,” individuals can enjoy walking the many trails and paths located throughout Radium. With golfing, skiing, hiking, whitewater rafting, canoeing, birdwatching, fishing, snowmobiling and many other activities available in and around the Radium Hot Springs, it is easy to see why this four-season village is a favourite place to visit and especially to call home!

History of Radium The Radium Hot Springs story is as old as the Rockies. The story began with the unleashing of powerful forces that left its tale in heaving, tortured rocks. The earth’s crust cracked along a fault, more than two kilometres deep. The shatter zone around the fault lets groundwater seep close to the earth’s core — heating, pressurizing and returning it to the surface. Prior to any development by settlers of European descent, the local First Nations peoples found the hot and odourless mineral water issuing from the rocks at the base of Redstreak Mountain to be soothing and healing for their aches and pains. The first legally-registered owner other than the Crown (government) was Roland Stuart, an Englishman who purchased the springs in 1890 for $160 and owned them until 1922. A group of Englishmen headed by Lord Northcote began construction of the first pool prior to 1914. Their efforts were halted by the outbreak of World War I. The Canadian government took over and the hot pool and the first log bathhouse were completed in 1923. 

Bighorn sheep

VILLAGE HISTORY

Bighorn sheep (ovis canadensis) are a famous attraction for Radium Hot Springs. During late October and early November, they can be seen around the village partaking in their famous head-banging ritual and rutting activities. The horns from a male bighorn sheep can grow to be up to 127 centimetres long (50 inches). Adult rams grow to be about 100 cm (40 inches) tall and weigh between 90 and 135 kilograms (200 to 300 pounds). A ewe, a female bighorn sheep, also grows horns, but these are much smaller than the ram’s horns. The sheep do migrate throughout the year. During the spring and summer, the sheep move higher into the mountains to lamb. During the fall and winter, the sheep are seen around town and along the highway towards Invermere.

The Springs 25th Anniversary 1988 – 2013

The Springs Golf Course is located on the plateau along the western edge of the Village of Radium Hot Springs. Both the golf course and clubhouse offer breathtaking views of the Columbia River wetlands and the Rocky and Purcell mountain ranges, and the opportunity for wildlife sightings — particularly the eagles soaring high above and the mountain sheep grazing along the golf course edges. As well as offering a scenic golf setting, this sheltered location allows for an extensive golf season beginning in March and continuing through into October. Construction of the golf course began in 1987 under the direction of Les Furber, a well-known Canadian golf course architect who was highly influenced by the renowned course designer, Robert Trent Jones. In the beginning, the most was made of the spectacular terrain, setting up each hole to offer both extraordinary golf shots and beautiful views. To this day, the Springs maintains a “strong balance between playability and challenge; playable but not penal, challenging but not intimidating.” The golf course opened in early summer of 1988 under the name of The Springs Golf and Country Club and today is simply called The Springs. The Springs is consistently ranked as one of the top public golf courses to play in British Columbia and is situated at the beginning of the Columbia Valley Golf Trail, which boasts nine excellent golf courses within a 35-minute radius. Enjoy the Springs in a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere with attentive service, a well-stocked golf shop and one of the best practice facilities in Western Canada. The three CPGA/LPGA certified golf professionals are available to provide golf instruction for new and experienced golfers alike. Private and group clinics are offered throughout the season. from the tips and plays to a par 72. The large, undulating greens are excellent putting surfaces, making the Springs a golf course you will want to return to time and again! In addition to offering memberships at the Springs, the course welcomes public play. Tee times booked at 10-minute intervals allow golfers to experience a fluid golf round with minimal delays — just time enough to enjoy one of the best hot dogs and a beverage at the halfway house. The Springs is managed under the Radium Resort Limited Partnership umbrella along with the Resort golf course, hotel and banquet facilities just five minutes south of the Village of Radium Hot Springs on Highway 93/95. The Resort course was established in 1957 as one of the first golf courses in the Columbia Valley. Under the direction of another well-known Canadian golf course architect and Radium Resort President Bill Newis, the Resort course is currently undergoing a master re-development plan and, in the summer of 2012, opened the first phase with three new golf holes. These new golf holes brought the Resort course up to a yardage of 6,071 and a par 71. Golfers enjoy unforgettable mountain vistas and spectacular elevation changes on the Resort course as their shots are captured against the Rocky Mountains backdrop. The Canadian Rocky Mountains are home to both grizzly and black bears. Bears need access to good quality habitat, a safe place to raise their young and freedom to move through large home ranges with as few obstacles and human disturbances as possible to survive. You can run into a bear anywhere, be it on a busy trail close to town or in the remote backcountry. Bears generally prefer to avoid people, however, encounters between bears and people do occur. Knowing how to avoid an encounter with a bear is the best way to enjoy the outdoors safely:

Kootenay National Park Easy access to the outdoor wonders of Kootenay National Park is one of the highlights of spending time in Radium Hot Springs. Established in 1920 around plans for the BanffWindermere Highway (today Highway 93 South), Kootenay National Park has an extremely diverse ecology, climate and geography. Glacier-clad peaks line the continental divide in the north, while the southern semi-arid grasslands provide a warm, dry home for prickly pear cactus and bighorn sheep. Alongside Jasper, Yoho and Banff National Parks, and Mount Robson, Hamber and Mount Assiniboine Provincial Parks, Kootenay is part of the 20,000-km² Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kootenay National Park boasts a variety of picnic sites, hiking trails, breathtaking viewpoints, hidden backcountry treasures and three seasonal campgrounds. During the summer, Parks Canada interpreters lead guided hikes and offer hands-on learning programs.

Kootenay’s wildlife includes bighorn sheep, moose, bears, coyotes and numerous bird species. Wildlife often grazes and travels alongside roadways. Be alert and pull well off the highway when stopping to view wildlife. Remember to view from a distance — it is illegal to approach, feed or harass wildlife. A daily or annual pass is required when stopping in the Mountain National Parks. All of the money collected goes towards park improvements, trail maintenance, interpretation and information services. Camping requires separate permits. A National Parks fishing licence is required for all anglers. Radium Hot Springs Mineral Pools A highlight of visiting Kootenay National Park is the Radium Hot Springs pools. Located at the base of a dramatic rock wall in Sinclair Canyon, these hot springs have been refreshing travellers for thousands of years. Long before the arrival of European settlers, First Nations peoples came to soak in these warm waters. The hot springs were purchased in 1890, by an Englishman of the name Roland Stuart. Almost 25 years later, an analysis of the springs’ water found harmless traces of radon — a product of radium decomposition that gave the hot springs their name. In 1922, with construction on the Banff-Windermere Highway nearing completion as part of Kootenay National Park’s establishment, the hot springs were expropriated and made part of Canada’s tenth National Park. The decades that followed brought an

increase in tourism, the construction of a new 25-metre long cool pool, and numerous facility upgrades. Today, Radium Hot Springs is Canada’s largest hot springs facility. The pools offer visitors a full National Park experience like no other: spectacular canyon views, wildlife viewing opportunities, hiking, picnicking and strolling. The Juniper Trail in Kootenay National Park is an easy stroll that delivers outstanding views., and is one of the more popular hikes in the Radium Hot Springs area.

Hiking around Radium Radium Hot Springs and the surrounding area’s diverse geographical features create some exceptional hiking and opportunities. With everything from dry, rolling grasslands to glacier-fed lakes and everything in between, it doesn’t matter if you are just starting out or an experienced backcountry enthusiast. The area has trails and trips that fit any skill level. The Radium Hot Springs area is a mecca for hiking and backcountry trips. Your options are unlimited and many access points leaving right from town. Popular, short day hikes near Radium include the Old Coach Trail, Juniper Trail in Kootenay National Park (KNP) together with the Redstreak Campground Trail (KNP) and the Radium Village Sinclair Creek Trail. Remember you are responsible for your own safety: • Before heading out, make sure you check ahead with a visitor experience counsellor at the Visitor Centre for maps, road access information, directions, hike details and trail conditions. Please remember a park pass is required to cycle or hike in Kootenay National Park. Be prepared for all weather conditions as the weather in the mountains can change quickly. Pack adequate food, water and clothing for the hike you have selected. Carry a first aid kit and be prepared for emergencies. Be bear aware — carry bear spray and know how to use it! Travel with a friend or in a group, choose a trail that is suitable for the least experienced member of your party, and tell someone where you are going and when you are planning to return. Sinclair Creek Trail (Radium): A short 3.5 kilometreround trip walk starting from the north end of Radium following Sinclair Creek. Access: The trailhead can be accessed through Rotary Park (across from the Prestige Hotel) or by travelling down Foresters Landing Road, turning right at the three-way junction near the mill, then staying left at the fork to reach the trailhead and picnic area. Old Coach Trail (Radium to Dry Gulch): A 9-kilometre (one-way) trail with moderate elevation gain perfect for

walking or mountain biking. The trail winds along the Columbia River and offers great views of the wetlands and Columbia Valley. An interpretive trail guide is available. Access: By parking at the Radium Visitor Information Centre, cross to the west side of Highway 93/95 and walk down Main Street West to the corner of Edelweiss Street. From Dry Gulch, turn west off Highway 93/95, opposite Eacrett Road, and park beside the south trailhead kiosk. Juniper Trail (KNP): A short 3.2-kilometre trail that starts at the hot pools and offers a spectacular view of Radium and the surrounding mountains from the top of Sinclair Canyon. Access: Parking at the hot pools parking lot, take the old access road to Radium Lodge and trailhead is on the left. Redstreak Campground Trail (KNP): The opposite side of the Juniper Trail. The trail meanders back from the hot pools to Redstreak Campground with a quick stop at the Place of Silence Peace Park. Access: From the hot pools upper deck by the bathrooms.

The Columbia Valley Golf Trail (CVGT) is a golfer’s paradise.
