Tiffany Gulbe and France Andestad Tiffany’s Thredz and Slim and Trim Wellness Centre Tiffany’s Thredz and Slim and Trim Wellness Centre in downtown Invermere is redefining itself this year, with a new store manager for the women’s apparel shop and a new focus on the weight loss centre upstairs. New shop manager France Andestad has spent 27 years in the valley, while owner Tiffany Gulbe has called the area home for 22 years. “Diets are easy to be on; it’s when you go back to maintenance mode that it gets hard,” explained Tiffany, whose weight loss program revolves around Ideal Protein, which combines a medically developed weight loss protocol with one-on-one counselling aimed at changing habits. Clients are encouraged to stick with the clinic for at least a year, while avoiding the kind of exercise that can

actually prevent one from losing weight. That’s a concept that was initially difficult to swallow, said Tiffany, who is a fitness instructor and a board member with the Valley Fitness Centre. When trying to reach her ideal weight by shedding 25 pounds, Tiffany came to the realization that her goals were being thwarted by an insulin imbalance. This is the target of the Ideal Protein system. By dialing down the pancreas’ reaction to sugar intake, weight loss is possible. “I have the training to coach my clients; that’s what makes this successful,” she said, noting thus far, participants in Invermere have shed a total of 510 pounds under the Ideal Protein program.

SISTERHOOD — The Columbia Valley’s businesswomen are unique in their ability to work together for common goals through organizations such as the Women in Business Committee of the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce, which was formed in 2011 as a way for local entrepreneurs to network and support one another. Photos submitted.

Women working together towards collective good

Submitted by Susan Clovechok, Executive Director of the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce. It has been my experience that women entrepreneurs are in business to have both an economic and social purpose; they want to make money, but also to have a positive impact on their community in addition to taking care of their families. Managing the life and work balance is a challenge facing many women in business. Although many will say it isn’t unique to women, I suggest that it is particularly unique for women and especially those who have families and careers or businesses to operate and balance. I didn’t fully appreciate how unique their situation was until I found myself in it. I was a successful executive in corporate Canada and for me my career was relatively easy. I would work late every night of the week if I had to (and I usually did), I accepted promotions and moves to new cities with little hesitation. I took the easy career route by staying single

until I hit my 40s at which time I found myself in a committed relationship, eventually living with my partner and his teenage son. My life changed. I finally understood and appreciated the choices made by other women that I had worked with over the years. This understanding and appreciation of women in the workforce is why I am so committed to the Women in Business Committee of the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce. Formed in 2011 by a group of women, and led primarily by Jackie Lysak and Tiffany Gulbe, the Committee provides women in business an opportunity to network with other women in an informative and relatively informal environment. The women who meet every month are committed to supporting each other to succeed both in their work and personal lives. These women get things done: in 2012, the Women in Business Committee of the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce were proud hosts of BC Premier, Christy Clark. They had local business woman and accountant

Barb Smith speak to the group about best practices when it comes to business accounting and finances. There was a session on goal setting, creating success and much more. The committee also held the first annual Holiday Market, which proved to be a great success and plans for 2013 are under way. In 2013 the committee is planning to create an all day event. Details are still be worked on, but given the passion and enthusiasm of this group it is bound to be an outstanding event. The CVCC Women in Business meet the last Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Chamber. Each meeting includes the opportunity to network with other women in business, learn something to help grow and develop your business and support other women to succeed. All women are welcome and do not need to be Chamber members to participate. Women who would like more information are invited to call the Chamber at 250-342-2844.

Barbara Mullen, Owner Fusion Wellness Spa

Barb Mullen is the owner of Fusion Wellness Spa located in Invermere and at Copper Point Resort. Barb had an amazing 2012 which she attributes to spending her first year living full time in the Valley and the opening of Fusion’s second location at the beautiful Copper Point Resort. Barb says this could not have been achieved without the incredible support of her staff, friends and great neighbours. Barb’s focus for 2013 is expanding the services and promotions offered to her ever expanding clientele. The highlight of the year so far… her front page picture in The Pioneer for the Snowflake Festival.

Be Gifted

Evolution Spa and Wellness Inhale! I invite you to stop cooking and cleaning and to let someone else care for you. I invite you to stop checking e-mail, your cell phone, the week’s busy schedule, Facebook, the pile in the sink, on your desk and in the laundry room. I invite you to stop doing and just be: To walk in silence on the beach. To dive into the ocean. To sing by the fire. To practice yoga, stroll in nature and soak in the pool. To gently heal, open your heart and quiet your mind. To honor and care for yourself in the same way you care for others. I invite you to the Evolution Retreat with Wade Imre Morissette at Blue Spirit, Costa Rica April 20th – 27th, 2013.

Circle Health Foods

After twelve years as a massage therapist, Sarah Bourke was ready for a new challenge. Circle Health Food has evolved into the best challenge yet. The store aims to address health as a complete lifestyle, offering everything needed to feel your best each day. Sarah sources fresh organic fruits, vegetables and groceries as locally as possible, supporting farmers, beekeepers, tea makers and others across B.C. Her weekly Organic Produce Bins are an excellent way to eat fresh healthful foods with a smaller carbon footprint and a smaller price tag. By making a commitment to “adding in” more of the good stuff, there will be less room for the things in life that don’t support true health.

An entrepreneur at heart, Alita saw a niche in the local market after moving to the Valley from Vancouver in 2003 with her husband. She started her own home-based business, Be Gifted Baskets, in 2004. Further opportunity and a willingness to evolve and change inspired Alita to open her boutique shop in downtown Invermere in fall 2005. “Owning my own business has been an incredible learning experience,” Bentley added. “A great big thanks must be given to all of our amazing customers who have loyally journeyed with us on this adventure! We could not have done this without them.”

After practicing law in the Lower Mainland since 2006, Amber van Drielen returned to the East Kootenays last February to open her own law firm, One World Law Group, where her focus includes family law, child protection and elder law. She serves clients throughout the Upper Columbia Valley, including Golden, Invermere and surrounding communities. “I will work with a client to resolve matters out of court when possible” explained Amber, who has an office in Golden. “I also do limited retainer work, meaning I will sit down with a client and figure out how I can best assist them with their legal matter — there may be some work they can do themselves and some I can assist with.”
