District will cut down iconic Russian olive tree By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff An iconic tree in the middle of Invermere will get the axe later this summer. The Russian olive tree in Cenotaph Park at the junction of the main street (7th Avenue) and 12th Street will be chopped down during renovations to the park, slated to begin sometime in August. “Of all the looming things we’ve needed to do for the last few years, this is the one we’re dreading the most,” said Invermere mayor Gerry Taft. The district’s contracting arborist, Green Leaf Tree

Service, has deemed the tree — which is split in a few spots (including near the bottom of the trunk) and has started to rot — a potential hazard. “In a wind storm or other adverse conditions, parts of the tree or even the whole thing might come down,” said Mr. Taft. “The recommendation that it had to come down was made to a past council, so we’ve known for some time it needs to go, but we’ve been pushing it as long as we can.” The district has attempted to preserve the tree by using metal wires, bolts and screws to prevent splitting, but the tree continues to split, according to Invermere chief administrative officer Chris Prosser, adding the district has also done some aggressive pruning to reduce the weight

the tree must support. “Where it splits at the base of the tree, it’s starting to rot. We don’t know how far the rot goes,” said Mr. Prosser, adding the tree’s root system also interferes with a sewer line that runs under Cenotaph Park to the Toby Theatre and that the district needs to cut roots there every year. The reconfiguration of 12th Street during the park’s renovation also means it makes sense to take the tree down, said Mr. Taft. “So it’s a combination of reasons, why we’re removing the tree,” said Mr. Taft, adding the district plans to replace the Russian olive with a new, mature tree in the Continued on page 5 . . .

Committee dishes out multi-use centre dimensions By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff The Community Hall Advisory Committee was back in action on Tuesday, July 22nd, when the layout and building approach of the new multi-use facility were further planned out. Floor plans were amended for the multi-purpose building to measure 7,000 square feet (in addition to a 1,500 square foot stage) rather than 6,000, reducing the size of the two multipurpose rooms from 1,000 square feet to 750 each. The entire building will span 16,500 to 17,000 square feet — an increase over the original plan of 15,000.

Invermere mayor Gerry Taft, a voting member of the committee, said “erring on the side of caution and being conservative,” the committee estimates a cost of $300 to $350 per square foot, plus a 25 per cent soft cost. Soft costs are indirect construction fees, such as architecture, engineering, legal fees, and interest. The budget for phase one is currently estimated at $6.6 million, with $0.6 million of that allocated for escalation and contingency, which is breathing room for future price fluctuations. “We’re cautiously optimistic it will be that number or less at this point,” Mr. Taft said. Most discussion during last week’s meeting centred around the process in which Continued on page 9 . . .

Stress relief Everyone deals with stress in their life and with certain career choices, the stress level can be front and centre. Police work certainly is one of those careers that can bring along some unwanted stress. Add wife-gone-crazy-withhome-renovations, and a guy has to find some way to relieve the stress factor. I think there is a reality show here that I can pitch. Back to stress relief. For me, it’s fishing when I can fit it in. This weekend I decided I needed time to find harmony in my life so off to Susan Lake I go with my small boat. Once out in the lake, I realize I failed to put the leader line on my fly rod. Fortunately, I brought my backup rod. First time in eight years, the motor started to act up. While working to get it started, I lost my balance and cut my left middle finger. Used my strong arm to open my medical kit, my emergency first aid training stopped the bleeding. I then grabbed a can of Coors Light (medical beer) to dull the pain. Continued on page 8 . . . Sabotage strikes Singletrack 6 By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff Professional cyclists from around the world had their race at the Toby Benches sabotaged last weekend, when a local resident misdirected competitors along the Johnson Trail during Stage 3 of the Singletrack 6 mountain bike event. “Everything was going along great until this idiot plugged in her own agenda,” said Lyle Wilson, race director of the event. “Either she thinks it’s a joke, or she’s vindictive that there’s so much mountain biking going on up at the benches that she tried to screw up the whole event.” Stage 3 of Singletrack 6 took place on Monday, July 28th on the Johnson Trail across from Lake Lillian on the Benches. Just before riders would have approached the Kloosifer trail network, Mr. Wilson said cyclists were misdirected by a vehicle that blocked the designed route, with the driver having removed several markers and instructing racers to pedal off the course. Out of 254 riders, the top 20 were deceived before a race official discovered what was happening. The lady fled . . . ‘District’ from page 3 renovated park (which, with 12th Street straightened, will be a plaza-like triangle running alongside the Toby Theatre). “It will be replaced with the largest tree that we can find. And we’re having difficulty finding a large tree that fits that street scape,” said Mr. Prosser. The district also wants to make sure the new tree doesn’t inadvertently obscure any businesses, he said. The new tree must be suited for Invermere’s dry weather conditions, but at the same time can’t have an extensive root system that will cause problems, according to Mr. Taft. “We’re trying to balance many desires with the new tree,” he said, adding maples are one type of tree that meets many of the requirements. Although nobody knows for certain exactly how old the tree is, Green Leaf has estimated the tree to be near the end of its life span, and Russian olive trees typically live to 50 or 60 years. Mr. Taft said he’s hard-pressed to think of anybody who can remember the tree not being there. “It’s a beautiful tree, it’s a large tree, it’s been there a long time. So to suddenly not see the tree

upon confrontation, and the fastest riders weren’t able to earn credit for their effort. The top eight riders were forced to improvise their way back to the finish line, where they crossed together and were all assigned a time of 2:15:09. “All these pros who put their lives into biking had to have their day negated,” said Mr. Wilson. “The whole local bike community spent months putting that course together, and there were people from all over the world there.” He said the affected cyclists were livid, and the incident puts a black eye on the entire Columbia Valley. “The whole goal was to offer a good experience at the event, and to have somebody come by and wreck that is disappointing, it makes our town look bad,” said Jordie Kirk, co-owner of Crazy Soles in Invermere and an avid trail user and advocate. He said he’s heard of courses being sabotaged in the past, but never in the Columbia Valley. “But aside from [the sabotage], people really liked that stage,” Mr Kirk said. Stage 2 was held at Nipika Mountain Resort on Sunday, July 27th, which Mr. Wilson said ran “fabulously” with no vandalism.

there will be a big surprise to some. No matter how much we spread the word, some people will still be shocked,” said Mr. Taft, adding he’s expecting some backlash from the move, even if it is the logical thing to do. “It’s (the tree) so visible, for some people it’s emotional. Most people don’t get worked up about sewer treatment, for instance, or other municipal matters, but on this we’re expecting some upset people,” he said. The district hopes, as much as possible, to recycle and reuse the wood from the tree, added Mr. Taft. “If people are interested in wood from the tree, we have a list at the district office and they are welcome to add their names to it,” he said. “We’re making no promises for sure, because it all depends on how much wood is available, but ideally we’d like it to see it used. I’m not yet sure how we will go about deciding who on the list will get the wood, but it may be that priority will go to people that want to use the wood to make something they would then donate back to the district. We’re hoping it could be used in a bench or some other piece of public furniture or public art, so that some part of the tree can live on.”

PERSPECTIVE

Road to success By Nicole Trigg Pioneer Staff

What a shame that someone local so adverse to change went out of their way to ruin a professional event that brought scores of people to the valley. No doubt, by the time the culprit reads this week’s Pioneer with the news story, letter to the editor, and jeers about the sabotage that happened to the Singletrack 6 mountain bike race, they will feel somewhat chagrined. Though mountain bikers are hardy folk who tend not to hold a grudge because they’re just so stoked about awesome trails, understandably the lead riders — who are usually the individuals who have invested the most money and time into an event like this — were furious about being misdirected off course. Will the valley be refused hosting rights for this event and any others because of this one-off hitch? We were unable to contact Singletrack 6 organizers in time to find out since the race was still underway at press time, with Stage 5 taking place on Golden’s Moonraker trails on Wednesday, July 30th. Word travels fast in every community, and the story about the Singletrack 6 sabotage will be one many bikers in B.C. hear about, but so will the glowing reviews of the incredible Nipika and Johnson singletrack trails, the stunning valley scenery, the lovely hot, summer weather, and the world-class treatment by the Village of Radium as host to Stages 2 and 3 of this year’s race. Another event is coming up that has the potential to create a positive spin in a different circle — that of the independant Canadian music scene. Some high profile musicians will be taking to the IMF stage this Sunday. For word to spread that the valley is a hip place to play, they need to perform to a sea of smiling faces. If you haven’t already, buy your tickets today to help Invermere shine as much as the stars who will be taking to the waterfront stage.

Clarification

In the “Pro-Jumbo thanks to opposition” letter to the editor in last week’s Pioneer, John Nairn’s claims of having observed “screaming violence” and “death threats” are based on personal conversations and observations, and are not linked to any formal charges or complaints regarding Jumbo Glacier Resort protesters.

Singletrack 6 saboteur out to lunch Dear Editor: I thought of writing a “Jeers” to the throwback lady who deliberately sabotaged this summer’s biggest sports event up on the Toby Benches, the Singletrack 6 mountain bike race. This person removed the course markers, parked her pickup truck across the trail, then stood there physically misdirecting the lead riders off the course in the wrong direction. Riders had already put two to three hours of maximum physical effort into the race when their day was almost ruined by this nitwit. Almost being the key

word, as course crew quickly replaced the markings, and the majority of the field was unaffected. Jeers just doesn’t do justice to the depth of my anger! Congratulations lady, your actions negated the efforts of over 300 fine athletes from all over the world, and over 100 volunteers. You’ve embarrassed the host, the Village of Radium Hot Springs, and you have humiliated and infuriated all of the members of the local mountain biking community. Mountain biking is now a multi-million dollar tourist draw in the Columbia Valley. Continued on page 7 . . .

Raymond suits up youngsters with his work attire By Dan Walton Pioneer staff It’s not cheap to play the most popular sport in Canada, but many families in the valley were able to have the cost of their kids’ hockey equipment covered by the NHL Players Association (NHLPA). Thanks to the NHLPA Goals and Dreams Fund, the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena was packed with boxes full of hockey equipment on Tuesday, July 22nd. Council says no street party By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Invermere council voted to shoot down a proposal to close main street (7th Avenue) for a street party on three consecutive Saturdays this August at a special council meeting earlier this week. The proposal, brought to council by Columbia Valley Arts (CV Arts) representative Victoria Page, was to block the main street, so that CV Arts could organize a street party, replete with buskers and street artists, and businesses spilling out into the street, in an attempt to draw people from the farmers’ market once the farmers’ market starts wrapping up, to the benefit of local downtown businesses. Council had tabled a motion on the matter at its most recent regular council meeting, on Tuesday, July 22nd, allowing district staff time to consult with emergency services and downtown business owners and then reconvened for a special meeting on Monday, July 28th to make a decision. Prior to the special meeting Invermere chief administrative officer Chris Prosser had assembled the responses of emergency service representatives and 18 downtown business owners. Fire and ambulance services has requested keeping at least one lane of the main street for dedicated emergency service use and of the 18 business . . . ‘Committee’ from page 3 to go about paying for the work. The idea of construction management (where the District of Invermere would assume responsibility for tendering each component of the project), which the district had proposed in earlier stages, was essentially ruled out. Chief administrative officer Chris Prosser said that approach would likely cost 25 to 30 per cent more than the alternative “design-bid-build” or “design-build” approaches. Both approaches will have request for proposals launched, but the district has to choose between awarding each element of construction bit by bit, or instead hire a general contractor to take control of the entire project at a flat rate. The “design-bid-build” approach would see the district use the help of a contracted architect — with that role assumed right now by Bruce Carscadden — to advise the district which bidders are most ideal. Instead of managing each bidder, the district could instead choose the “design-build” approach, where just one contract would be tendered to a single general contractor, who would then assume costs and responsibility for subcontracting. “At the end of the meeting, we decided to recommend design-bid-building,” Mr. Taft said. “Tendering is the least risky method going through the process, setting an upfront price with contingencies built in.” Unless there’s a major change in the project’s de-

owners, nine had unequivocally responded in favour of the proposal, while the other nine had either been opposed to it, or had been positive about it, but had had some concerns or reservations. “I’m always willing to try something, but my concern is that it (blocking the street) would create more frustration rather than a party atmosphere,” said Be Gifted owner Alita Bentley, who was in the special meeting audience. “Saturdays are already busy. I think maybe we should broaden our scope and try new events on different days.” “My impression was there was a lot more support from downtown businesses. Right now, it kind of seems 50-50. I can’t support that (having a street party) with only about half the businesses really strongly behind it, even if it’s just a trial,” said councillor Greg Anderson, participating in the meeting by speaker phone. “I’m not going to go for a trial. I’ve done all the legwork already. A trial takes as much work as the actual event. That’s not fair,” said Ms. Page, adding several downtown businesses owners feel they are in desperate need of an event like this to make financial ends meet this year. Some councillors were in favour of the proposal, saying it would likely help create a vibrant downtown. “I think this could work, I think this is worth a shot,” said councillor Paul Denchuk. Continued on page 38 . . . sign, cost will be determined before ground is broken. The Advisory Committee does not decide how the project will roll out, but chooses which recommendations will be made to the Invermere council. Council will likely adopt all recommendations, as all four councillors and the mayor of Invermere are part of the committee, which has just seven voting members. The existing community hall, built in the 1940s, will be demolished after phase one of the new complex is complete. Although the old building is slated to be torn down, Mr. Taft anticipates that other user groups may push to keep the structure in use — something he hopes to avoid. “Lower operating costs are a big draw for a new building,” he said. “If it (the old building) doesn’t get torn down, it will cost Invermere a lot of money to keep that building alive in the future.” Mr. Taft said that, with an optimistic perspective, construction on the new facility could start as soon as fall 2015, and will likely require about two years for completion. “We could see it by fall of 2017 at the earliest.” Phase two will add 9,000 to 10,000 more square feet (900 square metres) to the building, but there won’t be much space left to work with after that, Mr. Taft said. “At this point, if the second phase includes a library and fitness centre, that about fills it up.” The second phase is expected to complete the project, he said, as no third phase is anticipated.

Firefighters are working to get a growing wildfire near Canal Flats under control. Open fires are currently banned in the Southeast Fire Centre, but halfmetre by half-metre campfires are still allowed, as long as people have eight litres of water and a hand tool nearby, to be able to quickly put out the fire should it get out of control. Canal Flats fire chief David Ferguson said people should exercise caution with fires this weekend due to the dry conditions. A ban on fireworks and burning barrels in the village is in place. Movie Review: The Other Woman Carly and Kate’s friendship grows and develops through the movie, and the two find out about a third victim or partner — Amber (Kate Upton), the young free spirit — and hilarity ensues when the pair meet her through a chance encounter. Carly and Kate bring her into the group, even comforting Amber during her period of surprise and shock when she learns who she’s become inadvertently tangled up with. Amber seems to fit right in with the spirit of revenge. Sworn enemies become besties for life with a surprisingly minimal amount of trauma in the process. The movie shows a modernized way for women to deal with the situation. Instead of fighting

It’s a very strange circumstance that the women find themselves in, but they’re able to celebrate each other as they work through the situation they’re in. Tour of the Arts concentrating talent at CPR Lodge By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff The Columbia Valley Arts Council has arranged a beautiful cultural tapestry at the CPR Lodge in Invermere this Sunday, August 3rd. Each year, the Tour of the Arts invites local and second home-owning artists to celebrate the creativity of the Columbia Valley. The tour had previously consisted of a driving exhibit throughout the valley, and last year evolved into a walking tour around the heart of Invermere. A new approach has been taken this year, as organizers will be concentrating all of this year’s creativity within a stone’s throw. In addition to all of the professional artists who will be participating, a Celebrity Artist Challenge has put the regional mayors toe-to-toe. Gerry Taft of Invermere, Dee Conklin of Radium Hot Springs, and Ute Juras of Canal Flats each collaborated with a professional artist(s) to draw out their Dee Conklin at Bavin Glass own creativity. Similar to

how they gain employment, the winning mayor will be determined by a ballot box. Their work has been accumulating votes all summer while on display, but those attending the Tour of the Arts this Sunday will also have the final opportunity to vote, and the highest number of votes decides which Gerry Taft at mayor wins. Voting costs Crossroads Collective $1 per ballot, and there is no limit as to how many each voter can cast. The contest finishes at 4 p.m. on Sunday, and those in attendance will have the chance to bid on the piece of art created by Mr. Taft, which will be auctioned off silently during the challenge. “We are so lucky to have so many talented artists in the Columbia Valley... quite the artsy community!” said Celebrity Challenge co-ordinator Beverly Aitchison. The Tour takes place simultaneously with the Invermere MusicFest, which will be held on the field adjacent to the CPR Lodge beside Pynelogs Cultural Centre. The Arts Council has booked The Boom Booms from Vancouver to headline the concert, which begins

at 1 p.m. when Cranbrook’s Good Ol’ Goats take the Main Stage. In between the first and final acts will be The Harpoonist and The Axe Murderer, The River and The Road, and KellyLee Evans. Come prepared for a day of non-stop energy, because the valley’s own Otters, Emaline Delapaix, and SheberDean will be filling the gaps in between on the second stage. The Tour of the Arts begins at 11 a.m. and admission is $10; children are free with admission. A separate ticket is required for admission to MusicFest, which costs $50 at the gate (or $45 in advance). The MusicFest runs from 1 to 11 p.m. Ute Juras at Chris Jones, board Columbia Ridge Pottery member of the Columbia Valley Arts Council, said this year’s artists weren’t synchronized to offer a particular theme, but rather will offer an eclectic presentation of all the art in the valley. Keep an eye out for such local talent as glass artist Sandra Beingessner, photographer Kyla Brown, and wood carver Kyle Burley. Visit www.cvtourofthearts.ca for more information.

YOUR MONEY

What are bull and bear markets? People often hear about bull and bear markets, but are unsure of exactly what they are or how their investment portfolios might be affected. What they are Simply put, a bull market is defined as a period of generally rising stock prices, up at least 20 per cent from the previous low. Colloquially, the market is charging forward. On the other hand, a bear market is a general decline in stock prices over a period longer than two months. Any time where stock markets decline for two months or less is considered a correction, not a bear market. During a true bear market, stock prices essentially hibernate. Historical trends There are two questions many people ask about bull and bear markets: how long do markets usually stay in a bull or bear state, and what is the average gain or loss during the period? Mackenzie Investments have compiled data from 1956 to June 2014, in which they define a bull (bear) market as a positive (negative) move greater than 15 per cent for a period of at least three months. Using these parameters, the S&P/TSX Composite index has experienced 12 bull and 12 bear markets since 1956. On average, the length of a bull market is

49 months and the gain during the period is slated at 126 per cent. Conversely, the standard bear market lasted just nine months, with an average loss of 28 per cent. True to form, the 2008 financial crisis lasted just 9 months, but its severity caused a decline of 43 per cent. The S&P 500 index in the U.S. posted slightly more exaggerated results. Typically, a bull market lasts 49 months and gains 153 per cent, while a bear market loses 27 per cent over 14 months. This illustrates that compared to Canada, the average bull market in the U.S. sees higher stock prices, but their average bear market lasts over 50 per cent longer. Current trend We are currently experiencing a 64-month bull market, with a gain of 118 per cent. Compared to historical bulls, this one has lasted longer than normal; however, its 118 per cent gain is statistically in-line. This has caused many analysts to speculate that a bear market, or at least a correction, is imminent. This is not an unrealistic prediction; many analysts agree that stock prices in Canada are only slightly expensive. Also, with bond yields at record lows and real estate prices still high in most major markets, there are really no suitable alternatives to the stock market at this time. In other words, there will be a correction or a bear

market eventually (there always is), but the stock markets may have a ways to go before they would be considered truly overvalued. Final thoughts According to this data, the markets spend more time in positive territory than negative. In fact, the typical bear market in Canada lasts just 18 per cent as long as a bull. Most investors would say, however, that bear markets seem to last forever! To successfully navigate market downturns, it’s important to recognize that pullbacks can create opportunities. Though it may seem counter-intuitive, softer markets are often the best time to deploy cash. Think of it as buying something while it’s “on sale.” Market corrections are due to short-term events. To get a true bear market, there has to be a catalyst. For example, the credit crisis of 2008 caused a widespread shortage of cash in the economy, prompting a stock market selloff. Uncertainty regarding sovereign debt in the European Union caused a correction on the S&P 500 index during July and August, 2011. Remaining disciplined during bear markets is crucial. Significant investment bargains can be found, but emotional mistakes can easily be made. It helps to keep in mind that over time, the markets always go up and a diversified portfolio of high-quality investments is often the best way to participate.

Find current releases at the Radium library brary collection due to the long wait for new releases. They do appreciate this system when they travel. Always, our little ones are a great joy. We have a day-nursery two doors away and the children race in on Wednesday afternoons to read books from our bright children’s section and listen attentively to story time. Their teacher takes back several of the books they have chosen to keep until the next week. The One Book, One Kootenay (OBOK) author contest still has a few days left to cast a ballot at the libraries for your favourite book. All authors reside in the Kootenays and the winner will be touring several libraries in the area. The famous annual “Teddy Bear’s Picnic” will be held in the Radium Park on Saturday, August 16th at 10 a.m. Children three to five years old will search for little Teddy Bears and bring them back to Mother Bear. The Teddy Bear’s Picnic Story will be read to them as well as other bear stories. They will also participate in other activities, and juice and treats will be provided. And the Radium Public Library supports the “Market On Main” by setting up a booth for the sale of used books every Friday from during the summer. Make sure you don’t miss out when the Invermere Public Library hosts a drop-in life-sized Board Games Night on August 13th from 5 to 8 p.m. This week’s column was written by Jane Jones, the librarian at the Radium Public Library, which is located at Unit #2-7585 Main Street West in Radium. Visit www.radium.bclibrary.ca or call 250-347-2434.

The Village of Radium Hot Springs overflows with visitors and second homeowners who return to spend their holidays during the summer. The Radium Public Library is located on Main Street and during the holidays it becomes a centre for a variety of activities. The library often assumes the role of an Information Centre, as visitors tend to seek out the library because of their own library backgrounds. They find that our library has a patron computer, WiFi, maps of the area, and knowledgeable staff and volunteers to answer various questions regarding accommodation, restaurants, camping sites, activities for children, etc. The following are some of the various visitors who have used our library this summer: A couple from Hawaii, trying to trace their native heritage; a couple from Chicago who are exploring the Rockies; and two young cyclists from New Orleans who are cycling across Canada. These two young men asked where they could watch the World Cup soccer finals and were directed to the local pub that has a large screen plus good food. They had left a package by mistake in the library and it was returned to them and they were very grateful for all our help. In the past, a family in a motorhome parked in front of the library. They were visiting from France and spent the afternoon with their children reading books from our French selection. We offer books from our sale section to visitors to take with them to read on their holidays. Our second home residents often are surprised at our collection of new releases. LOOP THE LAKE

THEATRE UNDER THE STARS

By Erin Knutson Special to The Pioneer Eagle Ranch Resort in partnership with Kicking Horse Coffee and The Pioneer are pleased to present their first-ever theatre under the stars event on Wednesday, August 6th at 9:30 p.m. The exciting community event will showcase Spiderman 2 amidst the stunning vistas provided by the resort. “We are inviting the entire community to come on

down and enjoy the stunning views at the club,” said Eric Thorsteinson, general manager of Eagle Ranch Resort. Home to some amazing vistas, Theatre Under The Stars at the resort will offer a gorgeous perspective adjacent to the grass area, where blankets and lawn chairs are welcome. For those interested in dinner and a movie, the patio will serve as excellent seating to enjoy the film. “Our leadership team wanted to embrace the community and give them the opportunity to see the property,” said Mr. Thorsteinson. “It’s a family event and a family resort — we hope to see everyone there.” The leadership team at Eagle Ranch Resort was looking for a way to give back to the valley when they envisioned a cultural evening under the stars. A turnout of at least four hundred is expected for the evening’s showing. “We are definitely keeping our fingers crossed for perfect weather.” All attendees will be asked to donate non-perishable food items for the Columbia Valley Food Bank. Mr. Thorsteinson and his crew hoping to co-sponsor more events like this in the future.

LAKESIDE SPLASHDOWN By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff The Lakeside Event offers everybody in the valley a box seat to its annual paragliding and hang gliding competition. On Saturday, August 9th (Sunday August 10th in case of rain), dozens of pilots will be taking their wind-powered aerial gear atop Mount Swansea for the annual stunt and landing competition in Invermere. The Lakeside Event first began in 1975, which makes this year as the 39th anniversary.

Those who want to spectate from the front row are invited to the landing site — James Chabot Provincial Park. Hang gliders will aim for an inflatable inner tube at a shallow spot in Lake Windermere about 30 metres off-shore from James Chabot beach. Paragliders will be trying to direct themselves into an different inner tube, which is situated inside of an above-ground swimming pool on the beach. The water will give the pilots a soft landing.. “We don’t just jump off a cliff; it’s very civilized what we do,” said Max Fanderl, event organizer. “We’re walking into the air.”

Spectators are also welcome to witness the pilots walk into the air from the launch on Mount Swansea, which is accessible by car, bike, or foot. “A lot of people enjoy watching us go airborne,” said Mr. Fanderl. The event begins around 9:30 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m., depending on the number of pilots and weather conditions. There’s no cost to attend, and organizers will be exhibiting additional family fun at James Chabot with a day full of kids’ activities. To find out more about the event and its history — or to register as a pilot — visit lakesideevent.com.

By Nicole Trigg Pioneer Staff The community running event of the summer is happening for the 19th time next weekend on Saturday, August 9th. If you haven’t already strapped on a pair of running shoes and entered this scenic race, then you still have time to register before the early morning whistle sounds at the start line. This event is so well-loved that people travel from around the world to participate in this Rotary Club of Invermere fundraiser. Not only does your registration fee get put towards community-enhancing projects (like the Splash and Spray Park at Kinsmen Beach), but you, along with hordes of other folk, will experience the peacefulness of Lake Windermere and its surrounding mountains in a fun, self-propelled fashion. The 10-kilometre course starts near the Community Hall in Windermere, and winds its way up and down roads in the Lakeview area. For more serious competitors who have some training under their belt, the Half Marathon Race begins at 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 93/95 and Kootenay Road #3, then proceeds out and back along Windermere Loop Road before joining the established 10-kilometre route. New this year is CHIP timing. If you start and finish over the timing mat, your results will be uploaded “live” to the website — no more waiting around for your times. And running isn’t mandatory; walkers are welcome too. Water stations are located at regular intervals throughout the entire course with toilet facilities and first aid also at select locations. Once done, a treat is in store at Kinsmen Beach, where a hot breakfast of hearty pancakes awaits all participants (non-participants can eat too for a mere $5 donation). Visit the attractive new website at www.loopthelake. bc.ca for even more information and to register.

SUMMER SPLASH

By Erin Knutson Special to The Pioneer Ready for some hot summer fun? Grab the crew and head down to James Chabot Provincial Park on Sunday, August 10th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and partake in this year’s exciting Lake Windermere Ambassadors 2014 Summer Splash event. Family, friends, pets and all good company are cordially invited to an adventurous day of beach-oriented contests and all around good times. Fun-filled events for the day include splashtastic kayaking and paddle board rac-

es; or, for those interested in keeping their feet firmly planted in the sand, there will be an all-out beach volleyball competition. Aspiring sand artists and architects itching to get their hands dirty, be prepared for a unique opportunity to create some amazing watershed themed sand art. The Lake Windermere Ambassadors are a non-governmental organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the beauty and integrity of Lake Windermere. As a community-based organization they are dedicated to education, awareness, and bringing people together to share in the joy and responsibilities that are integral to the care and maintenance of our precious lakes. As stewards of Lake Windermere, their goal is to promote and understand its watershed. Summer Splash was envisioned by the Ambassadors as an exciting and collective way to celebrate and foster an appreciation for the beauty that Lake Windermere has to offer. For more information, please visit www. lakeambassadors.ca, or contact Kirsten Harma at 250-341-6898 to learn about the process of creating watershed-themed sand art.

OPEN WATER SWIM

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The Lake Windermere Open Water Swim is back once again. The popular lake swim event took an eight-year hiatus before returning in 2013, drawing some 70 swimmers, locally from the valley, from Alberta and some even from as far afield as Utah. This year, the event is aiming to be even bigger, with organizers hoping to draw 100 people to test their mettle in either the two-kilometre or the fivekilometre races, both of which will be out-and-back courses beginning and ending at James Chabot Provincial Park.

The 2014 Open Water Swim will be on Sunday, August 10th. Both races start at 8 a.m. and will follow a triangular course with one turn buoy. August is a great time for this event, with the water of Lake Windermere promising to be quite warm, according to race organizers, who nonetheless still recommend swimmers wear wetsuits. Swimmers must be 10 years old to take part in the two-kilometre swim, or 12 years old to take part in the fivekilometre swim. For more information, contact organizers Bruce Stroud and Sandra Boot at 250-342-3373 or visit heartoftherockiestri@shaw.ca .

Subdivision springing up at Radium Springs Resort By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff Twenty families will be joining the community at Radium Springs Resort, as the resort course has teamed with New Dawn Developments to add the Radium Springs Estates — a 20-home subdivision — in the heart of Canada’s top 100 golf courses. “Picture yourself sitting out on the deck, looking out onto your backyard and the grass goes right onto the fairways that go right into the greens that go across the valley and into the mountains,” said Rick Jensen, who co-owns New Dawn. Thirteen of the 20 lots are still on the market, and each owner will be given considerable creative control over their new home’s design. “We are a custom home builder with architectural and interior designers on staff,” Mr. Jensen said. “The designers on our team are capable of designing any style of home.” Design guidelines will ensure a smooth flow to the exterior appearance of each home in the subdivision, and each home’s interior will allow for even more choices in design. “We’re looking for compatibility of the homes on those 20 lots, but there will be a good variety of exterior appearance, while the interior is totally up to the owners.” Exteriors will present combinations of some rock and relatively maintenance-free sidings, along with shingles, timber accents and colourings. “It will have a mountain recreational look to it, and

within those parameters there are quite a variety of exterior appearances.” Mr. Jensen said the industry has seen healthy competition in recent years, which has led to an expansion in product quality and selection, while costs have either remained the same or dropped. “You can have a personalized and exciting interior without breaking the bank.” The project in Radium is growing the presence of New Dawn in the valley, which already has two projects underway in Panorama. At an early stage in what Mr. Jensen calls a long-term relationship, Radium Springs Resort will be giving the valley a chance to meet the New Dawn team during an open house at The Springs golf course on Saturday, August 16th between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. There will be a barbecue lunch, games and contests, and participation is by donation with proceeds supporting The Springs’ youth golf program. The lots that comprise the subdivision were zoned many years ago, and that creative foresight enticed New Dawn to partner up. “We were asked if we would consider building down here, and when we came and took a look, we were really impressed by the course, the design guidelines, and the thought that had been put in,” Mr. Jensen said. Planning a custom home surrounded by the Radium Springs Course begins by contacting Tamara Mensinger, the group sales and events co-ordinator for Radium Springs Resort, at 250-347-6259.

Avoid sun damage with sunscreen By Alicia Shanks Invermere Pharmasave Co-owner/Pharmacist We all know that sunlight causes damage to the skin that can be seen quickly, such as sunburns, redness and pain. The bigger concern is the damage that you don’t notice right away. Some sun damage takes years to appear including skin cancers and the signs of aging which may be especially noticeable on the face. This may appear as wrinkles, dryness, dullness, yellowing or uneven skin colouring. Using sunscreen can help prevent both the immediate skin damage (sun burn) as well as the delayed effects of sun exposure (wrinkles, skin cancer). Your pharmacists can help you to choose a sunscreen that adequately covers both the UVA and UVB rays. Here are a few points to consider when applying sunscreens: • Sunscreens actually work as soon as you apply them. However, if you are going in the water, you need to apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to allow enough time for it to be absorbed into the skin. Choose a waterresistant sunscreen if you are going to be going into the water or sweating a lot and remember to re-apply. • If you want to achieve the full sun protection factor (SPF) from your sunscreen, you need to apply a generous amount (think 1 tsp for each leg) as it has

been demonstrated that the laboratory testing that generates the SPFs of sunscreens uses much larger amounts than the average person typically uses. • You do not want to use a chemical sunscreen on a child younger than six months, but it is safe to use a physical sun-blocking cream like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Your pharmacist can help you choose a safe sun-blocking cream for your infant. • Many people have sensitivities to ingredients in sunscreens. Pharmasave Invermere contains a wide range of sunscreens, including hypoallergenic products, and also has the ability to custom compound a special sunscreen just for you that avoids any ingredient to which you may be sensitive. Sunscreens are only one part of minimizing the short and long-term effects of sun damage; here are some other tips to keep in mind: try to avoid direct sun exposure midday when the UVB rays are the strongest; if possible, wear protective clothing including hats, sun glasses, long-sleeved shirts, etc.; special sun-blocking fabrics have been developed especially for children, but you should note that even a plain cotton T-shirt has an SPF of 8 and a polyester/lycra shirt has an SPF of 35; having a good suntan does not necessarily protect you from further sun damage. Getting out and enjoying our valley sunshine is a must; let’s just ensure we do it safely.

Barbecue tips from the pros By Brad Bromley Sobeys Invermere Owner Most people look at these big two-and-a-half inch steaks and say it can’t be done. It is actually quite simple. You need to have your barbecue hot, say 500 F. The steaks should be at room temperature before you season them. You will need coarse salt and your favourite steak seasoning. Rub both sides of the steaks with lots of the coarse salt and seasoning — a lot more than you normally would use. You want to sear the steaks on each side for five minutes. Once you have seared both sides, put the steaks up on the top rack of the barbecue for approximately 20 minutes, turning them halfway through. Having a meat thermometer is recommended to ensure you have the proper internal temperature for how you like your steak cooked. Please keep in mind that the steaks will continue to cook up to 10 degrees after they have been taken off of the grill. Prior to serving, scrape off the excess salt and seasoning. If you are a fan of barbecue sauce, you will want to scrape this off before they come off of the grill and apply your sauce. For a nice medium rare, it is recommended to take the steaks off at 135 F.

Summer museum program goes back in tyme Curator’s Corner By J.D. Jeffery Museum Curator This summer is turning out to be a fun time at the museum. We have already hosted four weeks of activities for the children, every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until noon. Children ages six to 10 have learned about pioneer work, tree identification, animal tracks, gold panning and profit/losses in mining — while having fun! The enjoyment continues this month with the children trying out Old Tyme Communications, including a rotary phone, during B.G. Hamilton Day on August 5th and solving a murder mystery by looking at clues during Colin Cameron Day

on August 12th. August 19th will be our barbecue on Frank Richardson Day when children learn the meaning of a “penny earned” and on August 26th we finish the summer mapping on David Thompson Day. Space is still available so register now by calling 250-342-9769 or check our website for more information, www.WindermereValleyMuseum.ca. For the last two years, we have had a barbecue for the participants in the program. During the event, we find the visitors enjoy watching and sometimes participating in the activities. On August 19th, we want to invite everyone to come to the museum and participate in the morning activities. We will have hotdogs and drinks available for lunch.

Thrift store thriving

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff There’ll be a new door to crash in every Thursday at 10 a.m. The Invermere Health Care Auxiliary Thrift Shop will begin operating under a new roof in the fall. Just a stone’s throw from its current location, the business will be moving to the site recently vacated by Selkirk TV and Appliance Ltd. The thrift shop will be increasing its area from 2,400 square feet to just below 5,000. In addition to more inventory, the extra space will accommodate more volunteers, and create a more comfortable experience for shoppers and staff. “We’ve been in the current location since about 1992 and we’re very limited in our space. We’ve wanted to expand for some time,” said Marion Labrie, treasurer of the Invermere Healthcare Auxiliary. “It was the best location that we’ve come across, one level, wheel chair accessible, front and back access, still conveniently located in the hub of downtown. The auxiliary had been putting money away into a savings account for years

with the intention of purchasing a building of their own. “We’d been looking for a while but nothing really came up,” she said. “And then this spring, I walked by a certain location, realized it was for sale, and spoke with the owners. With the co-operation and assistance of many people we have put the deal together.” Operating hours will remain the same initially, but with the ability to house more volunteers, the shop may be able to extend its hours once it builds momentum in its new location. Those interested in volunteering at the new location or donating store fixtures can contact any of the volunteers at the store. To lighten the load before the move, the thrift shop will be having a massive liquidation sale on Saturday, August 23. The auxiliary takes possession of the building in the middle of August, but has renovations to complete before making the move. They excitedly anticipate the shop to be operating out of its new location near the end of September and would like to thank the community for their continued generous support.

Radium motel wins top honours By Erin Knutson Special to The Pioneer “We are a top budget hotel,” said Silvia Fahrion. Silvia and her husband Bjorn are owners of the Crescent Motel in Radium Hot Springs. The smiling and gracious pair were recently awarded the prestigious 2014 Travellers’ Choice award from TripAdvisor. The picturesque motel, tucked away on a small hill on Highway 93 just outside Kootenay National Park, received the award for its excellence and outstanding performance in the budget category of Travellers’ Choice. One per cent of all accommodations listed on TripAdvisor are awarded this honour at the recommendation of satisfied customers. “We enjoy being our own bosses — we are definitely strapped to it during high season, but get to enjoy hiking and the beauty and quiet of the valley when it’s off season,” said Mr. Fahrion about the perils and delights of owning, staffing, and running a smoothly-operating motel. The charming Swiss-German team bought the motel in 2010 from its original owners of 30 years. “We are constantly upgrading our rooms,” said Mrs. Fahrion of the motel’s upkeep. Clearly the dynamic duo enjoy creating an oasis that is both solitary and connected. It is the first time for the adventurous pair in the motel business and they are loving every minute of it. “We are first-time motel owners,” commented the industrious pair on pioneering their way through a new profession. Originally, it was a dream for the Calgary natives to find a way to put roots down in the valley. When the opportunity presented itself four years ago to buy the property, the two jumped in quickly with both feet. It’s unmistakable that the warm and welcoming 3.25” x 2.7”

TRULY A GEM — Silvia and Bjorn Fahrion are all smiles at The Crescent Motel, which recently received high honours from TripAdvisor. Photo by Erin Knutson couple love their work and take pride in what they do. Their children, Kim and Kai, still call the big city home, but the two pet-friendly and eco-conscious business owners delved into their new profession and new home with arms wide open. The duo excitedly discussed their use of eco-friendly products, including recycled paint and bathroom tissue among other progressive and environmentally friendly amenities. “We had a little dog and we had to take him everywhere and sometimes it was hard to find a decent petfriendly room, or even a hotel with pet accommodations,” commented Mrs. Fahrion on the existing conditions for animal toting travellers. “Our pet rooms smell great and are just as inviting as the rest of the motel.” Mr. Fahrion, an engineer by trade, and Mrs. Fahrion, a former banker, are the sole staff at Crescent Motel. The winning combination is evident in the inviting, calm, and well-maintained facility. The Crescent Motel features beautiful patios, a relaxed barbecuing area, and jaw-dropping views. The rooms are modern, up-to-date, and offer all the comforts of home.

HIDDEN DELIGHT — A rolling nine-kilometre loop in Windermere Lake Provincial Park is ideal for taking in a view of the Columbia Wetlands. Photo submitted

COLUMBIA VALLEY Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance

GREENWAYS

If I told you there was a TRAIL ALLIANCE trail close to town with great views of the lake and mountains where you are unlikely to see another person, would COLUMBIA VALLEY you believe me? Probably not. Such a trail does exist. Most people call it Sunshine Ranch. Officially, it is known as Windermere Lake Provincial Park. The first challenge with this trail is finding the entrance! Unlike most parks, there are no big signs or parking areas; just keep your eyes peeled for a small pullout on the TRAIL ALLIANCE east side of Westside Road with a little park boundary post about eleven kilometres south of Invermere. I will warn you this is more of a route than a trail; there is no signage or trail maintenance in the park. Below I will describe the route I like to run, but there are other animal trails and old roads in the park that could be explored. Once you are inside the gate, stay on the old trail to your right. This will take you to the high point of the trail with incredible views of the wetlands, the lake and the mountains above Windermere and Fairmont. If you look down towards the community of Rushmere you will see the spit of land that you will be descending to. Head north on a

GREENWAYS

fairly well-used trail that descends along the sidehill through some open forest. When you hit the flat grassy area, keep your eyes peeled for a hard right that will take you out of the trees onto open grassy ridges that descend toward the lake. For the runners reading this, you will feel like a champion with all the gradual downhill so far; just remember your car is higher than you are at this point… The trail heads south through some steep whoop-dedoos that are remnants of the motorized use this area had prior to it being a park. If you can find it, there is a faint trail that takes you out toward the lake after a couple of whoops. Follow this south overlooking the lake to the end of the spit of land that looks toward the community of Rushmere. This is a nice spot to enjoy the view and spot for birds in and around the wetlands. My preference here is to make my way to the other side of the wetlands and follow the trail up a ridgeline back toward Westside Road. When you hit an old road, head back north and descend down to the whoop-de-doos and onto the trail you came in on. Climb back up to the bottom of the sidehill you came down earlier and keep going north instead of ascending the sidehill. This will put you on another old road that climbs gradually back to the gate and your car. The whole loop is about nine kilometres. This area is quite rustic compared to the other trails around town, but makes up for it with the incredible scenery. Head out there and explore!

Human imagination is star-struck Valley Skies By Brian Fenerty Pioneer Columnist Facts and fiction are interconnected in many subjects, and certainly through the stars and us. Late dusk over our valley and halfway up southwest, we see bright Arcturus (Greek for Guardian of the Bear) — some 37 light years close and some charts say 25 times the radius of our Sun. Now that ancient bight of history is an interesting current connection for our area! Look eastward at a similar height and Vega — some 25 light years close, about twice the size of our Sun, and once Earth’s polestar (not Polaris) — shines bright, with much more distant Deneb (estimates vary from 1,600 to 3,000 light years away) nearby in the tail of Cygnus the Swan flying along the Milky Way. We can check charts for light year distances, solar sizes, historical uses of some stars for ocean crossings, and much more (though they don’t always agree and need be taken with a grain of salt). Professional astronomers are surrounded by as much data to dig through as there are stars out there. But the stars are also about imagination — ever

since people looked skyward and wondered and made up explanations. Modern astronomers, too, hypothesize what the latest numbers their instruments are telling them. The pictures we see of this star, that nebula — also simple numbers in basic charts — are just the public culmination of older background facts combined with researchers imagining then pursuing further possible facts. Storytellers have forever had stories about what the distant, unreachable stars are up to. Modern data has not stopped that, not one bit. Science fiction author Isaac Asimov, Star Trek writers, and many others have imagined planets as capitals in empires, a planet with a machine that creates from inner thoughts (be careful!), and a starship captain encountering a superbeing regarding a base on Deneb IV. Why is sky-high imagination as important as down-to-earth numbers about stars? It stretches our minds, young and old. It keeps our brainwork vigorous, and entraining synaptic processes spills over onto even daily tasks. Just as astrophysicists’ work often lead to useful technologies right here on our planet, the heavens above are not just an old-fashioned luxury, but an inspiring part of us. Same with citizens orbiting Deneb and looking back toward us! Brian Fenerty is a member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Contact him at fenertyb@telus.net .

The Columbia Valley’s only dry cleaner and coin laundry will be getting longer hours, more services and some new energy when two new owners take the helm today (Friday, August 1st). After working for J. Benedict Cleaning Services for the past two years, longtime friends Emelisa Ombing and Melinda Tugade are excited to bring their skills and enthusiasm to Invermere Dry Cleaning and Coin Laundry, a business that has been in Invermere for more than 30 years. “We see a lot of opportunity, because this is the only dry cleaner between Golden and Kimberley,” said Emelisa, who first met Melinda 16 years ago when they were both working for a shipping logistics company in Manila, in the Philippines. Starting today, the business will now be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday through Saturday. Services offered will include dry cleaning, coin laundry, alterations, drop-off laundry service, pressing, tablecloth cleaning, and commercial laundry. Team Canada finds single speed soul in Alaska Editor’s note: In the July 11th of The Pioneer, it was reported that local riders Steve O’Shaughnessy and Jordie Kirk were headed to Alaska to compete in the Single Speed World Championships as Team Canada (single speed biking is using a mountain bike with only one gear). By Steve O’Shaughnessy Contributed “The Single Speeders are coming! The Single Speeders are coming!” The cries could be heard from Russia. “Hide your women and children!” Yes, the Single Speed World Championships 2014 descend upon Anchorage Alaska in the way a moth flutters to a flame. That flame being amazing singletrack, very hospitable people, and beer. A lot of beer. SSWC2014 was not a race. It was a celebration of the noblest of machines — the bicycle. This event, as with other SSWC events, was geared singly (pun intended) to take cycling back to its roots, and have some fun. Our first day started upon arrival after taking the red eye in to Anchorage. We quickly put our bikes together, had some food and were riding trails by early afternoon. Anchorage is littered with paved trails on which one can navigate to pretty much any part of the city. The trails we found were buff and very fast. Perfect berms set you up for humps, bumps and kickers. It was like the best ride at an amusement park... you just don’t want to get off. I’m sure my hoots and hollers echoed through the forest as we tore up this area of trail. This was just a taste of the quality riding Anchorage has to offer. Feeling satisfied, we headed to the SSWC headquarters. We were happily greeted by the “bouncer” who more or less shoved a beer in our hands. Next stop, the waiver, after which we received our dog tag. This was an important accessory during the main event and had to be worn at all times just in case we received a trinket to hang from it. We were also given a punch card that listed a handful of bars that we needed to visit. That evening we found ourselves hanging out with locals and fellow riders alike, tossing the football around with the guys from Surly Bikes and well... did I mention there was a lot of beer? That night was dinner for all and the first decider round to determine who would be taking the race back to their country. We assisted as the event was being set up. Imagine riding down an alley of snow fence as wide as your handlebars; now line that course with 500 people. “Whoa, this is crazy!” Then a guy blindfolds you, gives you a bike you’ve never ridden before, and says “RIDE!” Jordie was to yell instructions at me, which were impossible to hear over the roar of the crowd. Reverting

to some old school balancing techniques, I was able to hop and ratchet my way to the finish. I’m pretty sure we won that round as I only dabbed twice. Well, maybe the naked guy rode it a little more gracefully. Hey, this is a nice IPA... You know that feeling after you’ve been hit by a bus? Neither do I, but I bet it feels a lot like that morning did. Riding the 10 kilometres out to the trailhead after a night like that was a task of its own. The three-loop course offered spectacular views, incredible single track, and some hike-a-bike. Along each loop, there were tasks that had to be completed in order to gain entry to the final decider for SSWC Champion and the winning tattoo. Upon ALASKAN SOUL — Top: Steve O’Shaughnessy (in orange) and Jordie Kirk (back right) completion of each loop, you are flanked by the SSWC2014 Japanese victors dressed as Ninjas. A circle was formed around the group of us as we started to ride circles around one another. It was basically a last man or woman standing contest. Jordie and I possess a high level of balance; however, when it comes to people driving you off your bike, it’s a pretty random event. Neither of us won the tattoo, which for this inked-up single speeder was a bummer, but both of us left with a smile on our face. The SSWC2015 decider came down to a volleyball match between Slovenia and Japan, after which Japan was crowned victorious. They have been trying to host for a number of years so this was great news for the small group of Japanese appropriately dressed as Ninjas. Our last day. With the event behind us, a couple of locals offered to take us south to Seward where we would ride into the alpine to Lost Lake. This 27-kilometre ride included a quick ascent into the alpine where we navigated the ridge line towards Seward. Runners, hikers and

Few wildlife conflicts this summer WildSafeBC By Kara Haugseth WildSafeBC Co-ordinator With the warm weather the past few weeks, the Columbia Valley has been enjoying a very quiet summer with few wildlife sightings and conflicts. With fruit season starting in full force, WildSafeBC would like to discuss some great tips to continue this trend of few conflicts into the fall season. Properly managing fruit trees is an integral part of keeping our communities safe in bear country. When fruit trees are not picked, the fruit that collects on the ground becomes an excellent source of food for bears, deer, and many other species of wildlife. When bears are feeding and preparing for hibernation during the fall months, they need to eat up to 20,000 calories per day! This is equivalent to 300 apples or 60 hamburgers a day. A poorly managed fruit tree is a great find for a bear, and will provide a reward that will keep the bear coming around your property. These bears will then become habituated to people, and can pose a safety risk to the community. If you have a fruit tree that you are not able to maintain, or you wish to have access to tree fruit this fall, please contact your community coordinator at invermere@wildsafebc.com or radium@wildsafebc.com to get signed up for the annual Columbia Valley Fruit Swap! We are currently looking for volunteers to harvest unwanted fruit and keep it off the ground and away from wildlife. Homeowners have the option of keeping some of the harvest if they wish. This program is a great way to help take care of both food waste and wildlife conflict.

If you have a fruit tree that you are not able or willing to pick, consider replacing it with another variety of tree, or vigorously prune the tree and/or get rid of blossoms with a pressure washer in the spring. Please go to our Facebook page at “WildSafeBC Columbia Valley” and fill out our quick survey about how the berry crop is shaping up in our area. Although properly managing fruit trees will do a lot to control for human/wildlife conflict, the most important tip for avoiding wildlife encounters is to properly store garbage. Bears can smell 100 times better than we can, and they are excellent at making their way to any garbage that is not properly secured indoors or inside a bear resistant container. WildSafeBC will be conducting a garbage raid following the long weekend on Monday, August 4th and Tuesday, August 5th — please ensure your garbage is not placed out before 8 a.m. on collection day! This is an Invermere bylaw, and will keep wildlife from hanging around urban areas. Here are some great options for managing garbage attractants: • Keep garbage inside a shed or garage until collection day. • Keep smelly garbage inside the freezer if you do not have access to storage outside your home. • Take garbage to the Windermere landfill or Invermere waste transfer station. • Contact your WildSafeBC community co-ordinator to learn about different bear-resistant garbage containers available for purchase and use in residential areas. To report wildlife sightings, aggressive wildlife or property damage caused by wildlife in our communities, call the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277. For more solutions, check out the WildSafeBC website www.wildsafebc.com, and Facebook page at “WildSafeBC Columbia Valley.” Kara Haugseth is the WildSafeBC Community Co-ordinator and can be contacted at 250-342-9281, ext. 1226, invermere@wildsafebc.com or radium@wildsafebc.com.

CHEERS & JEERS A very big Cheers to Henny (hope I spelled your name right), Sunday the 20th I was at No Frills and happened to lock my keys in the trunk of my car. Henny took the time to call Kool Country Towing for me. Cheers to Kool Country Towing for their assistance. You saved my bacon as I live in Calgary AB. I appreciate the both of you very much! Cheers to the neighbours in Brisco on Berry Road who helped and welcomed our family to the valley. The staff at the Brisco store were also extremely helpful and kind.

CHEERS & JEERS A HUGE cheers to all who participated in and supported the Jay Swim. Jay was smiling! Cheers to the two young ladies in the blue Hyundai who anonymously purchased coffee for the RCMP officer in the police truck behind them in the drive through at Tim Hortons. It was an awesome surprise that had an impact on the whole detachment. Cheers to “Bruce” for his anonymous and generous gift of breakfast for the three RCMP at Meet On Higher Ground Cafe. We were all surprised and encouraged by your act of kindness and appreciation! Cheers to A., K., and S. for the best afternoon this summer. Gentlemen we need to do it again before the clock strikes September! Cheers to Gerry for the sorbet at Ivy House on a hot June day. Enjoyed by all!

Mind is an energy system and energy can neither be created nor destroyed. (In physics, the law of conservation of energy states that energy can be neither created nor destroyed, but is TRANSMUTED, changes form.) The mind system that is you, or me, or Allen, goes on after the body ceases to function. The driver has left the vehicle but the mind/soul has picked up a lighter one for the next adventure ahead. So it is with Al.

A celebration of life memorial is planned for Saturday, September 13th, (2-4 p.m.) at Roy and Stephanie Healy’s home in Invermere. (R.S.V.P.) In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to the Revelstoke RCMP Search and Rescue Team in Allen Healy’s name.

On July 7th, Allen Healy and Mike Murphy, best friends for more than 40 years, got off work early from the Mica Creek Power Dam, where they were Industrial Electrical Contractors for BC Hydro. They played a round of golf, had a BBQ, and went fishing on Kinbasket Lake, about 6 p.m. When they had not returned to camp by 11:30 the security officer raised the alarm and a search was initiated by the RCMP at 4:30 a.m. the next morning. Search and Rescue boats and helicopters searched for a week, and then went to Search and Recovery. But no recovery was to take place. On July 18th the search was called off. Kinbasket Lake will be their grave, but not their destiny.

Al, will be greatly missed by those he leaves behind, and by those whose lives he touched; which were many. He is survived by his wife, Dawn Marie Huff and his two children and their spouses: daughter, Candice Doyle (Bob), of Calgary; step-son Nathan Healy (Sarah) of Surrey, B.C. He is also survived by his 6 grandchildren and 12 nephews and nieces. He will be greatly missed by his two remaining brothers and their families, Roy Healy (Stephanie), Dave Healy (Sylvia Feldman) of Invermere.

SUITE FOR RENT

A huge cheers to Dave at Cabin Care for solving two plumbing issues with courtesy and consideration. You are an awesome guy!

Cheers to the Brisco Riding Club for an awesome weekend of barrels, roping and gymkana. It was an absolutely fantastic time. Cheers to all the volunteers who made this weekend a huge success. Lastly a huge cheers to all the local businesses who provided sponsorship to make this weekend happen. Great job everyone!

Jeers to the person complaining about the garbage at the landfill after the July long weekend. Would you rather everyone spread the garbage all over town? At least they made an effort to take it to the landfill. Why don’t you blame sanitation services for not providing enough empty bins so people can put their garbage inside them?

STORAGE SPACE – assorted sizes, easy access, immediate availability, long-term or short-term. Deck Properties Warehouse, Industrial Park: 250-342-3166.

Invermere: affordable 1-bdrm and 2-bdrm apartments. $600 - $800/ mo. Includes all utilities. 250-3411182.

Cheers to John Nairn regarding the tactics used by the anti-Jumbo groups. I personally find them intimidating both verbally and otherwise.

Jeers to the person that sabotaged the Single-track 6 course markings. Now people from all over the world will remember the Columbia Valley as a place where the locals are a bunch of grumpy people. Hope you are happy.

Jeers to the businesses that complain about vendors that set up their stands in front of their business. You know well in advance when Valley Appreciation Days are or when other events happen in the valley. Take full advantage of the opportunity to advertise your business in The Pioneer, to let people know about who you are so that they can be a customer at your establishment. The valley has a very short season for everyone to take advantage of. Work together to make everyone fit in.

Cheers to Valley Foods for having the gluten free, dairy free and organic foods that I need. A gem in the valley. Cheers to those who plant and maintain the flowerpots and corner flower areas in Invermere. They are beautiful! Jeers to the Valley businesses who do not return phone calls, you want us to shop locally - return your phone calls, pretty simple! CHEERS to all the establishments in the Valley who are featuring live music and hiring local performers.

Jeers to the guy who made a scene at Dairy Queen about the fries that he didn’t even order. You ruined everyone’s lunch and made a fool of yourself. Good on you!

Cheers to the Transrockies for giving the Columbia Valley another chance. Sorry for letting you down again.

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Panorama Mountain Village is adding a new quad chairlift this summer, helping make more terrain at the ski hill accessible to novice skiers. The new Doppelmayr lift, part of more than $10 million the resort is spending on upgrades this summer, will take skiers and riders up to beginner-friendly terrain below Founder’s Ridge next season. The liftline for the chair lift has been graded and most of the towers installed. Much work remains, but the resort expects to be able to start load testing this August. “It will open up a lot of great intermediate terrain that already exists that has been underutilized in the past. It’s going to create a learning centre — a place for people to learn to ski and ride,” said Panorama chief executive officer and president Steve Paccagnan. The new lift will pick up skiers just steps from the day lodge and base area, and run somewhat parallel to the Mile One Quad. A new conveyor carpet lift is also being built in conjunction with the new chairlift. Panorama’s summer trail crew has also done some extensive glading, helping create more open lines on several runs in both the upper part of Extreme Dream Zone (below the Summit Hut) and in parts of Taynton Bowl (to skier’s left). The glading is meant to improve the flow of runs in these areas. “Skiers and riders will get more turns in there now, and the runs will collect more snow,” said Mr. Paccagnan. Construction work on a new $5-million post-andbeam clubhouse at Greywolf golf course also continues, with the foundation and structure in place and interior work ready to wrap in a few weeks. The new clubhouse features a 2,000 square foot pro shop, as well as one of the valley’s largest outdoor patios. Greywolf has been ranked as one of the top 10 courses in Canada, and the resort is trying to build on that, according to Mr. Paccagnan. “The former clubhouse had reached the end of its lifespan and was at capacity,” said Mr. Paccagnan. “The new clubhouse allows us to offer weddings, and will be open for dinner in the winter.” . . . Continued from page 9 Other councillors mentioned they had concerns about closing two streets (with 6th Avenue already closed on Saturdays for the farmers’ market) on Saturday, saying it could cause major traffic congestion in town and, if the street party fails to draw big crowds, inadvertently hurt some businesses. “We could obstruct three big Saturdays during the tourist high season, and even if the street party

GROUNDBREAKING — Panorama’s recently installed new quad chairlift sits waiting to ferry skier up to the bottom part of Founder’s Ridge this winter. Photo submitted All the new developments are coinciding with signals that interest in real estate on the mountain is picking up, he said. “We’re trying to improve the experience on the mountain as a whole,” said Mr. Paccagnan, about all the activity at the resort. “It’s ($10 million) a considerable amount to spend on improvements in this part of the Kootenay (region). It’s an exciting time at Panorama.” Other upgrades at Panorama include improvements to the bike park, which are meant to accommodate novice riders. There is a brand-new beginner-friendly downhill bike trail on mellow, forested terrain with emphasis on low gradients and a wide, smooth ride. In addition, Panorama has added a farm-andpioneer-theme attraction this summer. The Little and Friends Farm has farm animals for kids to feed and pet, and kids and adults alike can test their hand at panning for gold or handling a lasso. is a success that may not be enough to see the struggling businesses, who feel they need this, through another winter,” said councillor Justin Atterbury. Councillor Spring Hawes made an amendment to the tabled motion, that if the first Saturday street party was a big flop, the next two would be cancelled, but in the end the motion to close main street for the street parties was narrowly defeated, with Ms. Hawes and Mr. Denchuk voting in favour of it, and the other three council members voting against it.

FAITH

Who does Jesus say I am? By Laura Hermakin Reverend Christ Church Trinity This summer has been filled with new experiences, ideas and friends. I’ve had experiences that have completely changed who I am and it’s not even halfway through the summer. While enjoying both warmth and being busy, I’ve also been wrestling with the question of who Jesus was and still is and how I can live more fully as his servant leader. “Who do you say I am?” Jesus asked his disciples. This is the question that leads me to look at Jesus — as friend, a teacher, a healer, and a saviour. But on reflection, it seems the better question is, “Who does Jesus say I am?” Rephrasing it helps us better understand our responsibility to the world. We have the tendency to get caught up in all the amazing things Jesus did, but what

are we doing in return? How are we living in the example he set for us? It’s really easy to understand that Jesus was a friend, a healer, and our saviour. But how are we being friends, teachers, and healers? How are we living the example of Jesus as the body of Christ? As Christians, we are called to be the body of Christ. In trying to living as Jesus would, we might want to recognize the issues that keep us from doing that. Many of us have personal barriers, but remember we’re all worthy of love and belonging. It’s okay to be vulnerable with God, or with the world, no matter how difficult that is. Jesus didn’t choose easy, but rather jumped head first into the mess and, as the body of Christ, it’s our turn to jump. Hope for our future is bright. I see it every day in people I encounter and in the smallest gestures, such as when a small kid reaches out to somebody and pulls them into the dance circle to make them feel welcomed and loved. Children take the peace and acceptance they find to everybody they meet. They understand that they have a responsibility to be arms and legs of Jesus — to be teachers, friends, and healers. They also know it’s going to be hard and that there are always obstacles. The challenge is on us, so ask, “Who does Jesus say I am?”

Successful year for local Canadian Cancer Society chapter Harold Hazelaar, president of the Windermere and District Lions Club, hands over a $1,000 donation to Sheila Tutty, event co-ordinator for the local Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). This year, the local CCS decided to switch things up a bit and gave the Relay for Life a rest for a year or two. In place of that fundraiser, a number of events were held, the first being the Giant Garage Sale which netted $1,729. Due to the generosity of Copper Point, Eagle Ranch, Fairmont Mountainside, Radium Resort, Riverside, The Ridge at Copper Point, The Springs at Radium, and Windermere Valley Golf Course — who all donated two 18-hole green fees — a Golf the Valley Raffle was a huge success, raising $1,603 net (Nev Anderson was the lucky winner). The Summer KickOff Party on June 21st at the Invermere Community Hall raised $9,172, thanks to the generosity of local businesses that donated a variety of items to auction off, and the attendees who bid on those items. The Kootenay Savings Credit Union, a major sponsor once again, donated both money and items to auction. The Windermere and District Lions Club has also been a supporter for many years, and this year was no different, generously donating the $1,000. A weekend in the life... Just another great weekend in the Columbia Valley. Local band Smarty Pants kicked things off in Invermere on Thursday (July 24th) night at the Downtown Get Down and Evening Market (Photo by Emily Rawbon); Runners in the Swansea Scramble on Sunday (July 27th) morning were awarded a crystal clear view of the valley when they made it to the top of Mount Swansea, while organizers Nadiya Fry and Kuba Sumbera greeted racers at the bottom with smiles and applause (Photos by Jenny Hubrecht); Ballfest was back all weekend long, with 23 teams taking over the Crossroads Ballpark for three days of slo-pitch softball tournament fun, complete with a Friday night cabaret and a Saturday night social (Photos by Nicole Trigg); Nearby, at the Windermere District Farmers’ Institute Agri Park (also located at the Crossroads), the Summer Agri Fair on Sunday, July 27th marked 100 years of history for the local farmers’ collective. Pony rides, horseshoeing demonstrations, sheep shearing, face painting, market vendors and more were featured during the six-hour event. A centenary celebration saw the institute receive a Century Farm Award from the provincial government, and a ceremonial sod-turning at the site of the future micro-abbatoir also took place. In honour of 100 years of agriculture, regional district Area G director Gerry Wilkie brought out his pea sheller (a replica modelled after an actual antique) that, with a few minutes of manual horsepower, can easily shell a four-litre bucket of peas (Photos by Nicole Trigg); Nipika Mountain Resort hosted Stage 2 of the Singletrack 6 mountain bike race on Sunday, July 27th (first two photos), then Stage 3 moved to the Johnson Trail on the Toby Benches in Invermere on Monday, July 28th (Photos by Gibson Pictures).
