By Erin Knutson Special to The Pioneer Eagle Ranch Resort in partnership with Kicking Horse Coffee and The Pioneer are pleased to present their first-ever theatre under the stars event on Wednesday, August 6th at 9:30 p.m. The exciting community event will showcase Spiderman 2 amidst the stunning vistas provided by the resort. “We are inviting the entire community to come on
down and enjoy the stunning views at the club,” said Eric Thorsteinson, general manager of Eagle Ranch Resort. Home to some amazing vistas, Theatre Under The Stars at the resort will offer a gorgeous perspective adjacent to the grass area, where blankets and lawn chairs are welcome. For those interested in dinner and a movie, the patio will serve as excellent seating to enjoy the film. “Our leadership team wanted to embrace the community and give them the opportunity to see the property,” said Mr. Thorsteinson. “It’s a family event and a family resort — we hope to see everyone there.” The leadership team at Eagle Ranch Resort was looking for a way to give back to the valley when they envisioned a cultural evening under the stars. A turnout of at least four hundred is expected for the evening’s showing. “We are definitely keeping our fingers crossed for perfect weather.” All attendees will be asked to donate non-perishable food items for the Columbia Valley Food Bank. Mr. Thorsteinson and his crew hoping to co-sponsor more events like this in the future.
LAKESIDE SPLASHDOWN By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff The Lakeside Event offers everybody in the valley a box seat to its annual paragliding and hang gliding competition. On Saturday, August 9th (Sunday August 10th in case of rain), dozens of pilots will be taking their wind-powered aerial gear atop Mount Swansea for the annual stunt and landing competition in Invermere. The Lakeside Event first began in 1975, which makes this year as the 39th anniversary.
Those who want to spectate from the front row are invited to the landing site — James Chabot Provincial Park. Hang gliders will aim for an inflatable inner tube at a shallow spot in Lake Windermere about 30 metres off-shore from James Chabot beach. Paragliders will be trying to direct themselves into an different inner tube, which is situated inside of an above-ground swimming pool on the beach. The water will give the pilots a soft landing.. “We don’t just jump off a cliff; it’s very civilized what we do,” said Max Fanderl, event organizer. “We’re walking into the air.”
Spectators are also welcome to witness the pilots walk into the air from the launch on Mount Swansea, which is accessible by car, bike, or foot. “A lot of people enjoy watching us go airborne,” said Mr. Fanderl. The event begins around 9:30 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m., depending on the number of pilots and weather conditions. There’s no cost to attend, and organizers will be exhibiting additional family fun at James Chabot with a day full of kids’ activities. If you haven’t already strapped on a pair of running shoes and entered this scenic race, then you still have time to register before the early morning whistle sounds at the start line. This event is so well-loved that people travel from around the world to participate in this Rotary Club of Invermere fundraiser. Not only does your registration fee get put towards community-enhancing projects (like the Splash and Spray Park at Kinsmen Beach), but you, along with hordes of other folk, will experience the peacefulness of Lake Windermere and its surrounding mountains in a fun, self-propelled fashion. The 10-kilometre course starts near the Community Hall in Windermere, and winds its way up and down roads in the Lakeview area. For more serious competitors who have some training under their belt, the Half Marathon Race begins at 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 93/95 and Kootenay Road #3, then proceeds out and back along Windermere Loop Road before joining the established 10-kilometre route. New this year is CHIP timing. If you start and finish over the timing mat, your results will be uploaded “live” to the website — no more waiting around for your times. And running isn’t mandatory; walkers are welcome too. Water stations are located at regular intervals throughout the entire course with toilet facilities and first aid also at select locations. Once done, a treat is in store at Kinsmen Beach, where a hot breakfast of hearty pancakes awaits all participants (non-participants can eat too for a mere $5 donation). es; or, for those interested in keeping their feet firmly planted in the sand, there will be an all-out beach volleyball competition. OPEN WATER SWIM
By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The Lake Windermere Open Water Swim is back once again. The popular lake swim event took an eight-year hiatus before returning in 2013, drawing some 70 swimmers, locally from the valley, from Alberta and some even from as far afield as Utah. This year, the event is aiming to be even bigger, with organizers hoping to draw 100 people to test their mettle in either the two-kilometre or the fivekilometre races, both of which will be out-and-back courses beginning and ending at James Chabot Provincial Park.
The 2014 Open Water Swim will be on Sunday, August 10th. Both races start at 8 a.m. and will follow a triangular course with one turn buoy. August is a great time for this event, with the water of Lake Windermere promising to be quite warm, according to race organizers, who nonetheless still recommend swimmers wear wetsuits. Swimmers must be 10 years old to take part in the two-kilometre swim, or 12 years old to take part in the fivekilometre swim. Subdivision springing up at Radium Springs Resort By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff Twenty families will be joining the community at Radium Springs Resort, as the resort course has teamed with New Dawn Developments to add the Radium Springs Estates — a 20-home subdivision — in the heart of Canada’s top 100 golf courses. “Picture yourself sitting out on the deck, looking out onto your backyard and the grass goes right onto the fairways that go right into the greens that go across the valley and into the mountains,” said Rick Jensen, who co-owns New Dawn. Thirteen of the 20 lots are still on the market, and each owner will be given considerable creative control over their new home’s design. “We are a custom home builder with architectural and interior designers on staff,” Mr. Jensen said. “The designers on our team are capable of designing any style of home.” Design guidelines will ensure a smooth flow to the exterior appearance of each home in the subdivision, and each home’s interior will allow for even more choices in design. “We’re looking for compatibility of the homes on those 20 lots, but there will be a good variety of exterior appearance, while the interior is totally up to the owners.” Exteriors will present combinations of some rock and relatively maintenance-free sidings, along with shingles, timber accents and colourings. “It will have a mountain recreational look to it, and

The lots that comprise the subdivision were zoned many years ago, and that creative foresight enticed New Dawn to partner up. “We were asked if we would consider building down here, and when we came and took a look, we were really impressed by the course, the design guidelines, and the thought that had been put in,” Mr. Jensen said. Avoid sun damage with sunscreen By Alicia Shanks Invermere Pharmasave Co-owner/Pharmacist We all know that sunlight causes damage to the skin that can be seen quickly, such as sunburns, redness and pain. The bigger concern is the damage that you don’t notice right away. Some sun damage takes years to appear including skin cancers and the signs of aging which may be especially noticeable on the face. This may appear as wrinkles, dryness, dullness, yellowing or uneven skin colouring. Using sunscreen can help prevent both the immediate skin damage (sun burn) as well as the delayed effects of sun exposure (wrinkles, skin cancer). Your pharmacists can help you to choose a sunscreen that adequately covers both the UVA and UVB rays. Here are a few points to consider when applying sunscreens: • Sunscreens actually work as soon as you apply them. However, if you are going in the water, you need to apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to allow enough time for it to be absorbed into the skin. Choose a waterresistant sunscreen if you are going to be going into the water or sweating a lot and remember to re-apply. • If you want to achieve the full sun protection factor (SPF) from your sunscreen, you need to apply a generous amount (think 1 tsp for each leg) as it has
been demonstrated that the laboratory testing that generates the SPFs of sunscreens uses much larger amounts than the average person typically uses. • You do not want to use a chemical sunscreen on a child younger than six months, but it is safe to use a physical sun-blocking cream like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Your pharmacist can help you choose a safe sun-blocking cream for your infant. • Many people have sensitivities to ingredients in sunscreens. Pharmasave Invermere contains a wide range of sunscreens, including hypoallergenic products, and also has the ability to custom compound a special sunscreen just for you that avoids any ingredient to which you may be sensitive. Sunscreens are only one part of minimizing the short and long-term effects of sun damage; here are some other tips to keep in mind: try to avoid direct sun exposure midday when the UVB rays are the strongest; if possible, wear protective clothing including hats, sun glasses, long-sleeved shirts, etc.; special sun-blocking fabrics have been developed especially for children, but you should note that even a plain cotton T-shirt has an SPF of 8 and a polyester/lycra shirt has an SPF of 35; having a good suntan does not necessarily protect you from further sun damage. Getting out and enjoying our valley sunshine is a must; let’s just ensure we do it safely.

Barbecue tips from the pros By Brad Bromley Sobeys Invermere Owner Most people look at these big two-and-a-half inch steaks and say it can’t be done. It is actually quite simple. You need to have your barbecue hot, say 500 F. The steaks should be at room temperature before you season them. You will need coarse salt and your favourite steak seasoning. Rub both sides of the steaks with lots of the coarse salt and seasoning — a lot more than you normally would use. You want to sear the steaks on each side for five minutes. Once you have seared both sides, put the steaks up on the top rack of the barbecue for approximately 20 minutes, turning them halfway through. Having a meat thermometer is recommended to ensure you have the proper internal temperature for how you like your steak cooked. Please keep in mind that the steaks will continue to cook up to 10 degrees after they have been taken off of the grill. Prior to serving, scrape off the excess salt and seasoning. If you are a fan of barbecue sauce, you will want to scrape this off before they come off of the grill and apply your sauce. For a nice medium rare, it is recommended to take the steaks off at 135 F.
