Youths arrested for theft

By Elinor Florence Pioneer Staff

A group of local youths thought to be responsible for a rash of downtown robberies was apprehended by the RCMP last weekend. Break-ins have taken place at several businesses over the past two months, including The Blue Dog, Stober’s Department Store, The Thrift Shop, Gerry’s Gelati and Penner’s Footwear. RCMP Corporal Dale Morgan said the group consisted of at least six young people including several under the age of 18 and several over 18. Young people cannot be named even if charged, and the adults cannot be named because they have not yet been charged. Dallas Stober said at his store, it was a case of breaking out rather than breaking in. “Apparently they were hiding in the store when it closed. In the morning when the staff arrived they found both cash registers were missing along with a laptop computer and about $500 worth of clothing. The back door was pried open from the inside.” Mr. Stober said the thieves took the cash registers because”they couldn’t figure out which buttons to push.” He said the cash registers, which contained very

little cash, were found the next morning at Kinsmen Beach, smashed beyond repair. “It’s the first time we’ve been robbed in 23 years and hopefully the last,” he said. Linda Penner, owner of Penner’s Footwear, said the thieves kicked in the rear door on several occasions before they finally decided to come into the store. The next morning, she found clothing and shoes scattered around the store. “We knew it must be young people because the stuff that was stolen was what kids like to wear Nike hoodies and running shoes,” she said.

Jennifer Hansen, owner of The Blue Dog, was also angry about the robberies. The restaurant was broken into on four separate occasions despite her efforts to keep the premises secure. “After I put extra locks and barriers on the window, they just broke the window and climbed through,” she said. The rear window is now boarded up and screwed shut. She said her only choice now is to spend about $700 for an alarm system. Ms. Hansen said thankfully, the group decided not to damage anything. Copper Point forced to fence golf course By Elinor Florence Pioneer Staff

Copper Point Golf Club is concerned. The club has spent the past three years building its reputation in the community. Now club manager Ron Mason fears a backlash from area residents when they find out that the golf course will be fenced. “We have no choice,” he said. “The health and safety of people is our primary concern.” He said the club’s insurance company requires the fence, and the board of directors has mandated that the fence be built. The course has several features that make it a dangerous place. One of them is the 12-million-gallon pond. “One day we heard a lady screaming,” he said. “Her Golden Lab had fallen into the pond and was drowning because the pond is lined with a slippery material and the dog couldn’t climb out. We formed a human chain and pulled the dog to safety but we kept wondering what if it had been the lady instead.”

Even in winter the pond is a concern. He said someone took it upon himself this winter to clear the pond for skating with an all-terrain vehicle. “We admire his intentions but if he ever went through the ice . . . that pond is 40 feet deep,” said Mr. Mason, shaking his head. Another problem area are the steep hills used for tobogganing. “We had hundreds of kids out there this winter,” he said. “The first time a little girl on a toboggan hits a tree, it’s over. That’s the kind of thing that makes good dreams go bad.” Golf course maintenance manager Dave Lister agrees. “Once the course is fenced, it will be a weight off my shoulders,” he said. The condition of the course is his responsibility, and twice vehicles have driven over his carefully-tended greens. “The potential is there for $40,000 worth of damage if somebody spins a few doughnuts.” The owners of the property are supporting the club’s difficult decision. The Windermere Valley Lions Club rents the 190-acre property to Copper Point. Over the past three years the Lions have realized about $120,000 in rental income, most of which finds its way back into the community

through charitable donations. “We always knew that fencing might have to come,” said Ray Brydon, chairman of the Lions’ land committee. A favourite spot for hikers and dog-walkers, the former wilderness area is now bordered by some residential developments like Lakeview Meadows. Mr. Mason said his intention is to make the course available in a controlled environment. For example, he hopes to hold skating days next winter when people can enter through the club house and make their way to the pond on a designated path. Construction of the fence will begin March 18th. The $70,000 fence, about 3.5 kilometres long, will look similar to the elk fence along the highway through Kootenay National Park. It will keep out people, dogs and game but will not restrict the movements of smaller animals, he said. Mr. Mason was named Businessman of the Year by East Kootenay Business magazine in 2004 for his community efforts, among them the free Christmas dinner for area residents and the huge fund-raising golf tournament for the Windermere Valley Chamber of Commerce.

In a successful annual program, volunteers with the Lake Windermere Rod and Gun Club have been providing nesting areas for Canada Geese for more than 30 years.

Historic Rod and Gun Club By Margo Daugherty Special to The Pioneer “You shall not destroy what you have not the power to replace.” These were the words spoken at the birth of the Windermere and District Rod and Gun Club exactly 86 years ago on March 17, 1919. A group of local sportsmen gathered in the Rotunda Hotel in Invermere on that historic evening. Their aim was to pressure government for the management of wilderness, fish and wildlife. The first president was guide and author John A. Hope, with a board of 25 executives. For several years took an active part in all matters pertaining to wild game, birds and fishing and made many recommendations to the game department. Following are the highlights, taken from club records over the years: During the 1920s: • in 1922 the club was dissolved. • a fishing and game committee of the Windermere District Board of Trade was formed, consisting of J.C. Pitts, W.H. Cleland, A.M. Chisolm, Dr. Coy and John McCoskrie. • the committee pressured the Game Department to restock many local lakes with cutthroat and kamloops trout and salmon. • in 1924 the club was revived with A.M. Chisolm as president. During the 1930s: • many area lakes were restocked with fish. • the club remained active and Mr. Chisolm was president for 21 years. During the 1940s: • there was a great showing of big game in this area and also many predators, with a bounty of $40 on cougars and $2.50 on coyotes. Club records state: “Eagles were not plentiful but harmful, but hawks, crows and owls are causing problems.” During the 1950s: • the annual Ling Derby was begun around the full moon in February. By Michelle Taylor Pioneer Staff For those of you interested in turning your winter-pale thumbs to green, look no farther than the Columbia Valley Botanical Gardens. The group puts on workshops for anyone interested in the latest gardening techniques: composting, soil building and water and plant conservation. “We help people turn their own gardens into something more beautiful,” says director David Zehnder. The group’s main objective is to build, maintain and harvest the community garden. The garden encompasses the area around Pynelogs Cultural Centre including the hill just below Heron Point. A variety of plants, flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruits are grown here each year. Lasagna anyone? Have they actually designed a pasta plant? Not exactly. Lasagna gardening is a unique “no-dig” system for establishing a healthy new bed using a layering process – much like making lasagna – but the ingredients are compost and organic matter. Volunteers come out on a designated evening each week in the summer to share ideas, help in the garden and have a lot of fun.

Community outreach programs provide donated fruits and vegetables to Pynelogs, the Food Bank and other non-profit organizations. Children from Eileen Madson School come out to the garden each spring to plant seeds, help with composting and learn about conservation and gardening. The group is working on two projects: • Grasslands research: The native grasslands in the local area are now endangered. “The number and density of the trees we have growing in the valley are like weeds, because they are being grown in such a way that it is unnatural,” said Mr. Zehnder. In the past, forest fires were a more regular occurance and would burn out many small trees and brush allowing space for the grasslands to grow. The grasslands area on the hillside just below Heron Point is one of the last pieces of native grassland found in Invermere. A restoration project currently being done will determine what conditions are best suited to grow the grasslands. The research is being conducted near the Redstreak Campground. It is hoped that with this research much of the grasslands can return back to its native state. • Growing a selection of Canada’s rarest food

plants. The plants are grown and the seeds provided to Agriculture Canada to replenish their seed bank. Seeds lose their ability to germinate or grow if they are left in storage for too long. And if seeds are no longer viable, they will become extinct. If a disease or climate change wipes out one particular variety, the growing companies have nothing to fall back on. The seeds grown in the Botanical Gardens are unique because they have genetic attributes not available in many commercially grown plants. Changing trends could wipe out many of the commonly used varieties, as they are more fragile and susceptible to disease or climate change. One only needs to look back to Ireland’s potato famine in the mid 1800s to realize the devastating results of having only one species of food plant. Over a million people died from starvation and disease as a fungas consumed the potato fields. A more recent example of food plants that have been threatened by extinction is the Cavendish Banana, the only type of banana available in Canadian grocery stores. Its future looked bright until the dreaded Panama Disease came to the jungle. But don’t throw away that great banana bread recipe just yet, as much research has gone into developing new varieties of banana as well as combating the disease.

The Upper Columbia’s rich history of gardening is evident today throughout the valley. The Botanical Gardens located at Pynelogs Cultural Center was once the home of Randolph Bruce and the grounds were planted in a variety of flowers. Vegetable gardens, a necessity and also a source of pride to early settlers, produced a wealth of vegetables that were dried or stored in root cellars for consumption throughout the year. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s the Akisqnuk Nation gardens were some of the best in the region and many settlers learned local knowledge regarding climate, soil conditions and irrigation from the native farmers. Youngsters learned the value of hard work at a young age, weeding, keeping irrigation ditches clear, and

flumes repaired during the drought years in the 1930’s. Today many of the techniques used by early settlers, including the variety of vegetables and flowers, can be found in many valley gardens. While walking and exploring the benches around Lake Windermere or up and down the valley, old home sites can be found not by ruins, but by blatant large dark green leaves of the rhubarb patch or the seeded fern of asparagus plants, producing as well today as they did years ago growing in the pioneers’ garden. Pieces from the Past have a great selection ranging from 500-year-old native North American artifacts to retro mid-century modern collectibles from the fifties. “We like to keep a really broad range of antiques,” said Larry. One of the most dangerous items in the store is an Indian war club thought to be from the 1600s. Books have been the oldest collectibles Larry has ever carried in the store, some dating back to the 1600s. The barn wood furniture that Larry builds looks as though it has been built a century ago. “I start with a pine sub-frame which gives the piece its strength. The outside structure is made from weathered wood to give it that old fashioned look,” he says. Wood is salvaged locally and throughout B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan. “Each piece has its own story,” Larry says. Mary Frances Shaw is the new owner of the Invermere Sears Centre. By Michelle Taylor Pioneer Staff Customers will still see a familiar face at Invermere’s Sears Centre even though it is under new ownership. Mary Frances Shaw, who has worked at the store for the past four years, decided to buy the business from Sterling Pettit last November. “I knew I could run the business and it would be better than working for someone else, so I decided to buy it,” she said. Because she had already had the responsibility

of operating the outlet store, the transition from manager to owner was very smooth. “Nothing has changed a whole lot. I worked more hours in the beginning hiring and training new staff. Now that the staff is in place, I am back to my regular four days a week,” she said. Mary Frances has lived in the valley her entire life. She grew up in Radium, married Kevin Shaw from Invermere and they have two daughters - Savanna, who is attending her first year in physics at Simon Fraser University; and Breanne, who is in Grade 9 at the local high school. Sears is a long-time institution here for people who need things that aren’t available locally. Many customers order their items by telephone and pick them up at the local outlet. The Sears store use to be located at the back of Penner’s Footwear until the fall of 2001 when it moved to 10th street. Mary Frances will also go that extra mile to get appliances and electronics you need at the best price. “The catalogue does not list all products and prices that are available. For people who are looking for specific electronics or appliances, come see me,” she says. Although the Sears Centre carries a lot of Kenmore products, customers can purchase Kitchenaid, Maytag, Whirlpool and other well-known brands. The Sears Centre caters to residents from Canal Flats to Spillimacheen and it typically takes about five working days for most orders to arrive.
