Labour shortage chokes service station

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff Reddi-Mart Esso owner J. C. Alacoque of Invermere said his ongoing struggle to staff the popular Invermere fuel stop led to his decision to close down the operation.

Mr. Alacoque, who has owned the Esso service station in Athalmer for the last 15 years, also owns the PetroCan across Athalmer Road from the Esso station.

A trio of factors, he said, came to bear on his situation: the end of his lease on the property, the end of his lease with the supplier, and his inability to staff the operation.

“It’s been a good business for us,” Mr. Alacoque said. “We don’t feel bad about it; things change.”

According to Mr. Alacoque, staffing costs 30 per-

cent more than it did five years ago. Even though starting wages rose from $8 to $12 per hour, and the closing time was cut back from 3 a.m. to 11 p.m., he said the business could not compete for staff with the resorts and golf courses that are open only during the day.

He said his manager’s decision to move with her boyfriend and daughter to Cranbrook because of the lower cost of entry into the housing market dealt the business its death blow.

Mr. Alacoque said he was able to talk her into staying on a few extra months until the July 31st closing date.

The closing will leave a blank slate where the Esso station used to be. Ivan Radostits of Radostits Holdings of Edmonton said he hopes to attract another gas station operator.

“I realize that the end of July is a bad time to be

closing down that service for all the tourists,” Mr. Radostits commented.

“I’m doing what I can to keep it operating as a gas station.”

Mr. Radostits said he has no interest in selling the property to developers. “I would prefer to do something on my own down the road.”

Earlier this year, District of Invermere Council denied an request by Mr. Radostits to vacate an alley that separates his property which extends to the north and east.

Both agree that the corner is ripe for anything.

“It’s a prime corner,” Mr. Radostits commented.

Mr. Alacoque agreed.

“He’s open to anything, like anybody else if you wave enough money in front of them,” he commented. “Maybe a gas station isn’t the best use of the property any more.”

Invermere council balks at electronic meetings

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff After Councillor Ray Brydon expressed concerns for abuse of a section of the new procedure bylaw that would allow members of Invermere Council to participate in meetings electronically, the bylaw was picked apart by other members of council and sent back to committee to be refined.

Bylaw 1344, which would regulate council meetings and establish procedures for the passing of bylaws, was receiving its third reading and up for adoption at the regular meeting of Invermere Council on Tuesday night.

Section 8 of the bylaw would allow council members to participate in meetings by telephone or video conference if they were unable to attend in person.

Some council members bristled at the idea of a disembodied voice participating in a meeting of council, but Invermere Mayor Mark Shmigelsky said electronic means are routinely used to accommodate the far-flung members of the East Kootenay

Regional Hospital District Board, but not without problems.

Mayor Shmigelsky said problems with the teleconference techology routinely prevent some members from participating.

Councillor Brydon argued for the addition of a clause requiring the council’s permission for a member to participate electronically.

“I have a hang-up with that,” Councillor Brydon commented. “I think that when we are having an electronic meeting, the item being considered has to be pretty important.”

Councillor Gerry Taft said he accepted the bylaw as written and was more concerned that such a clause might be abused to exclude a council member that didn’t agree with the majority. “I’m comfortable with how it is written,” he said.

District of Invermere Councillor Sarah Bennett agreed with Mr. Taft. “I don’t think there is anyone who will abuse it.”

Ms. Bennett said her busy lifestyle makes electronic participation necessary. “Planning a full life and being committed to being here has become a

challenge,” she said.

Mayor Shmigelsky — who routinely changes in the washroom before meetings from from his blue jeans and flannel swing-shift work clothes into a suit and tie — didn’t buy it. “I made a commitment to miss work to attend these meetings,” he said.

District of Invermere Chief Administrative Office Chris Prosser admitted that technology has outpaced legislation and there isn’t a lot of precedent to look at when it comes to electronic meetings.

Councillor Bob Campsall said he is concerned that the quality of the absent councillor’s input on the issues of the day would suffer. “I would discourage anything that takes us away from the face-toface debate.”

Mr. Prosser suggested a lawyer review the bylaw. “The law is still grey on these electronic meetings,” he said.

In the end, Councillor Brydon got his wish.

“I would like to see this referred to the public services committee,” he said. “I don’t think we should totally rush into this without studying it further.”

Our weather: the fly in the ointment

By Elinor Florence Pioneer Publisher There are people all over the world who sincerely believe that Canadians are subject to some form of mass masochism for choosing to live in a country with our climate, and from time to time I’m tempted to agree with them - like this summer, for example.

Having recently returned from a short trip across the three Western provinces, we found that everywhere we went people were ready to blow their brains out over this year’s terrible weather.

We seem to be able to handle gloomy skies in May, hoping that June will turn things around - but it’s already late June and as I write this I’m looking out my window at a sheet of dark clouds massed against the mountains, wind whipping the trees back and forth, and rain lashing down at a 45-degree angle.

A change is predicted for the end of the week, so hopefully by the time you read this newspaper it will be a balmy 30 degrees above and gorgeous.

But we can’t even count on the weather forecast to give us a ray of hope. The nearest Environment Canada weather-watchers are in Golden (130 kilometres to the north) and Cranbrook (130 kilometres to the south). Supposedly weather predictions are right only 60 percent of the time, anyway.

Added to this is the extreme variability of our weather in the Columbia Valley. The other evening we were sitting in our dining room looking at a rainstorm out the window on the west side of the room, while through the window on the east side of the room - a mere five metres away - the sun was shining.

But whatever the weather, we know you will agree that Canada is still the greatest country in the world.

And what won’t kill you will make you stronger, as the old saying goes.

Happy Canada Day, everyone.

Helmets, please!

Why does our water taste bad?

Dear Editor:

I’m wondering why we still have such poor tasting water in Invermere.

When I first came to live here in 1953, the village then, as now, was served water from the Paddy Ryan reservoir and the taste was good.

In 1983 the main water line was replaced and more storage area created by building a dam on Ben Abel Creek. Since then we’ve had poor tasting water and, I believe, more turbidity.

A lot of people seem to be annoyed by the chipboard castle that is rising from the swamp near the overpass. Congratulations to Maureen Thorpe for her poetic view of the situation.

Congrats to everyone who’s been involved with making Invermere’s new skate park a reality—what a fantastic hangout for the community.

But it was insanely irresponsible to show photos of skaters catching big air and ripping the new park HELMET-LESS!!!! All one has to do is read the most recent letters to the editor regarding Jumbo to know that head trauma is no laughing matter. Head injuries last a lifetime.

For sure long hair looks cool whipping in the wind, flying high above the concrete during a mute grab, but crash landings are common, and skulls don’t bounce, they break.

Please please, please, let’s require all skaters to wear helmets and pads while using the park.

You only get one brain, don’t bruise it.

Broadband referendum will be costly nuisance Dear Editor: Even though the Regional District of East Kootenay Broadband initiative was clearly defeated through the very questionable Alternative Approval Process, I note that our elected politicians have now decided to subject us taxpayers to the cost and nuisance of a referendum.

Did the public not speak clearly enough in the vote process and in the media? They snuck the first $2 million slice of financing for this project through us in the Alternative Approval Process over a year ago and are now asking us to agree to a further $12.5 million of financing amortized over a 25year period.

The very name, Alternative Approval Process, reeks of bureaucratic gobbledygook, and is certainly not a pillar of the normal democratic process. By requiring the public to take the initiative of voting against something rather than by the normal process of positive affirmation is a travesty of democracy. Most people do not readily understand Alternative Approval Process. Much of the public is not impressed and this process also captures our many non-resident taxpayers without providing them with any franchise.

I also take issue with the comment from certain RDEK politicians that we do not understand what is best for us.

Many of the residents in this community have many years of experience in risk management and decision-making, along with common sense in these matters. They are very qualified to express their opposition to this initiative. Even though an initial investment has been made sometimes it is prudent not to chase it with more money. Remember the lyrics from the Kenny Rogers song: “You got to know when to hold ‘em, and know when to fold ‘em”.

It is important to understand that broadband technology is not new. It is an excellent and widely-used technology to transfer large data files but most residents have access to two, competing high-speed service providers, with several speed options. The evolving and currently existing technology is wireless based either from fixed towers or

satellite transmission. This seems to be perhaps a more realistic option for sparsely-populated rural communities.

The Akisqnuk Band is already providing this form of service.

I fully realize that some parts of our region do not have access to ADSL, cable or wireless service at this time but that is part of the reality of living in a rural community. Remember we all only had dial-up until about three to four years ago. It does not seem equitable to ask the entire small rural population base, most of whom are already adequately serviced, to fund a costly service for a relatively small portion of the population. The more highly populated urban communities such as Invermere and Radium are also not part of the potential tax base. We are a market-based, user-pay society, for virtually all of our services.

The Alberta example has been mentioned in several letters in our media.

It is important to understand that the Alberta government, not counties or regional districts, funded the entire Alberta fibre optic initiative. The Alberta government funded the broadband highway into all of the provincial hospitals, schools and, I believe, libraries as well. Private service providers in the communities also offered to connect businesses and individuals who required this level of service on a user-pay basis.

If the B.C. Government undertook to underwrite this type of service in our community, I would fully support it as a provincial taxpayer.

As I complete this letter I now going into the kitchen to pour myself a glass of recently boiled water. I am advised by RDEK that my tap water is unsafe and that I should boil all of our drinking water. Is this Walkerton West?

This in a very high tax base community with assessment levels at approximately one billion dollars or greater in RDEK Area F alone. At the same time as we live every day with inadequate roads and minimal or failing services, we are being virtually coerced into funding an unnecessary Broadband Service at an amortized cost of over $28 million.

A Day in Court The following people were sentenced in Adult Criminal Court in Invermere on June 26th with the Honourable Judge Ron Fabbro presiding.

• Carolyn R. Barzilay was fined $1,000 and a victim surcharge of $150 and prohibited from driving for three months for driving without due care and attention. She was found not guilty of alcohol-related charges.

• Kyle R. Collin was fined $500 and ordered to pay $250 in restitution to Larry Kennedy for stealing his all-terrain vehicle.

• Maninderpal S. Minhas was given a suspended sentence and a victim surcharge of $50, and was placed on probation for 18 months for assaulting his wife. He is prohibited for using firearms and is required to attend counselling for alcohol abuse, anger management and learning respectful relationships.

Mr. Minhas was also required to provide a DNA sample to police.

“These offences are serious social problems in our country and within our communities,” Judge Fabbro commented.

The following people were sentenced in Adult Criminal Court in Invermere on June 19th with the Honourable Judge D. C. Carlgren presiding.

• Dominic J. Berard was fined $600 and a $90 victim surcharge and prohibited from driving for one year on a charge of failing or refusing to provide a breath sample to police.

• Lee D. Meadows was fined $600 and a $90 victim surcharge and prohibited from driving for one year on a charge of operating a vehicle or vessel with more than 80 mg of alcohol in the bloodstream.

• Terrance G. Mercer was sentenced on three charges: possession of property obtained by crime, failure or refusal to provide a breath sample, and willful obstruction of a peace officer. For the first offence, Mr. Mercer was sentenced to 45 days in jail and a $50 victim surcharge. For the second offence, Mr. Mercer received ten days in jail, a oneyear driving prohibition and $50 victim surcharge. On the third count, Mr. Mercer received ten days in jail and a $50 victim surcharge.

• Jesse B. Nichol was fined $600, a $90 victim surcharge and prohibited from driving for one year on a charge of operating a vehicle or vessel with more than 80 mg of alcohol in his bloodstream.

• Robert L. O’Neil was fined $500 and a $75 victim surcharge on one count of willful obstruction of a peace officer.

• Timothy A. Pocha received a suspended sentence and ordered to serve 18 months probation with conditions on a charge of assault. In addition, Mr. Pocha was ordered to provide a DNA sample; he was prohibited from possessing weapons, including firearms for hunting; and prohibited from having direct contact with Georgina Pocha if he has consumed alcohol.

RCMP will take noise complaints seriously For the week of June 18-25, Columbia Valley Detachment handled 119 calls for service. Among these were six reported thefts from motor vehicles. Motorists are reminded to ensure they lock their vehicles and to remove any items, including loose change that would tempt thieves. As the saying goes, “lock it or lose it.”

June 20: RCMP are investigating a motor vehicle crash that occurred on Laurier Street near the A&W Restaurant. At about 3 a.m., a Ford Escape turned onto Laurier Street and across the double solid line, striking an oncoming Jeep. The driver of the Jeep suffered minor injuries believed to be “whiplash.” The driver of the Ford appeared to have been drinking and was taken back to the Detachment for breath testing.

Charges are being recommended for Impaired Driving and Drive While Over .08 mg.

June 23: RCMP were called to a report of a stolen vehicle. The owners reported they left their vehicle unlocked as the keys had slid down under the seats.

The vehicle was parked in the home’s driveway and was last seen at around 11 p.m., on June 24. Later, this Detachment was advised that the car had been recovered by the Kimberly Detachment.

June 24: At 9:23 a.m., RCMP attended Fairmont Hot Springs Golf Club in regards to some mischief involving two of their golf carts. Overnight, two golf carts had been taken and driven over the course damaging some of the greens. The carts were also crashed

through the fence. One golf cart was recovered down the road at Riverside Golf Club. The other was recovered on Kootenay Road No. 3. Both carts had damage to them. The carts were chained overnight but the seats were taken off by the suspects allowing them to bypass the chains. Seats were then taken from private carts in nearby residences. Some minor damage to Riverside Golf course was also reported.

June 22: At 2:50 a.m., Police responded to a report of a disturbance at the Tuk Inn in Radium Hot Springs. Investigation determined that a group of people were in the rear of the hotel, in the alley, yelling, screaming and trying to provoke a fight. Criminal charges are being considered for Cause a Disturbance against at least one male.

June 22: At about 8 p.m., police were called to a report of a man smashing out the front windshield of a car. The caller believed that this male was either intoxicated or on drugs. When they responded, RCMP found that the vehicle belonged to the man who was smashing the window. The owner was trying to remove the front windshield as it was previously damaged and he thought he could then drive it to Alberta to get it fixed. He had only come back to this area to pick up his car. Police told him for safety reasons, he could not drive without a windshield. The owner agreed to make other arrangements. There was no evidence of alcohol, or drug involvement. No charges are being laid.

June 24: At about 11 a.m., RCMP were called to the Windermere Valley Golf Course in regards to a break and enter and mischief. The golf club employees discovered that their golf cart shed had been broken into over the previous night and five golf carts had been found parked outside. The wooden shed door had been broken and a wall inside had also received some damage. It appeared that the golf carts had been driven around the course as there was some minor damage to the greens and a flower pot had been run over. Anyone with information, please contact RCMP or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

This past week, RCMP have responded to over 40 noise-related complaints. Many of these are violations of community bylaws. All residents should ask their respective municipalities what their bylaws require.

It would seem common sense to most people that loud music or yelling, especially in the evening, is likely to disrupt others’ peace and quiet. However, when people forget, a $100 fine will usually remind them, and we’re happy to oblige.

For the more serious offenders, we can offer at least one night’s accommodation at the local Detachment. While not as comfortable as many of the lodgings in the Columbia Valley, we do our best to ensure an experience one will soon not forget. In fact, a Court Date about six weeks down the road will remind you yet again.

YOUR MONEY Do your kids a favour: teach them about money A survey by well-known consumer magazine Consumer Reports found 28 percent of 12-year-olds do not know that credit cards are a form of borrowing money. A full 40 percent do not know that banks charge interest on loans.

Needless to say, this lack of knowledge is bad news.

Not just for our kids, but for society, too. Unless we educate our children to respect money, they will reach adulthood without the skills and knowledge to manage their finances effectively. Ultimately, that means economic instability for all of us. How do you lead your children to fiscal responsibility? Here are some ideas: • Talk to your kids about money A generation ago, children weren’t usually a part of family financial discussions. That was wrong. Of course, kids don’t need to know everything that goes on with the family bank account. But if you want your kids to respect money, you need to talk to your kids about how the family makes money, and what the family does with that money. At the very least, this will make children aware of how money isn’t something that just happens—it’s something that’s earned.

• Introduce them to investing What you learn as a kid sticks with you for the rest of your life. So make sure to introduce investing to your children as early as possible. Help them buy a stock share or a savings bond with their birthday money. Show them the dividend or interest cheque they receive—even if it’s only for a few cents. Tell them that this is how money makes money. By the time they’re old enough to invest themselves, it will be second nature.

• Encourage teenagers to find jobs Most parents consider it a point of pride to provide for their kids. That’s a noble goal, but one that may be doing them more harm than good. If you want your children to be self-sufficient (and who doesn’t?) you need to encourage them to find jobs. Not only will this be an excellent way for them to learn about the working world, it will teach them greater respect for money: they are less likely to be frivolous with spending when they have to withdraw from their bank accounts rather than asking for a handout from the bank of Mom and Dad. • Give your kids financial freedom Some parents encourage their children to make positive life decisions with gifts and other financial incentives. Again, this probably does more harm than good. Children need rules and limits, of course, but if you want to raise strong, independent children with a drive to succeed, your children must have some freedom to make their own decisions. Sometimes those decisions will be bad decisions. But taking responsibility for their actions will ultimately teach your children a lot more about money—and about life itself—than a lecture from a Mom or Dad ever will.

Financial education is just as important as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Parents need to instruct and direct their children in the ways of money—how to make it, how to invest it, and how to spend it wisely.

Dinner at Earl Grey Lodge is an aair to remember

Ski Canada magazine has named Earl Grey Lodge at Panorama Mountain Resort as the best non-condominium accommodation in Canada for 2007.

This is the lodge’s fourth year in business and winning such a prestigious national award has owners Phil and Clare Marshall very excited. “We are really happy,� Clare said. “When you are working hard and trying to do something well, it’s great to get an award because you are being recognized for all of your hard work.�

Phil and Clare, along with their two children, Charlotte, 16 and William, 13, moved to Invermere from England ďŹ ve years ago.

The idea to build Earl Grey Lodge came to them while on a family vacation skiing in Australia. After being disappointed when the little ski lodge where they were staying turned out to be “shoddy�, Phil and Clare knew they could do better. “We wanted to open a European-style ski chalet,� Phil said. “We saw Panorama and thought ‘this is the place.’�

Earl Grey Lodge is composed of six suites, a restaurant and a beautiful outdoor area designed for special occasions.

The outdoor area features a gazebo modelled from one in Prince Charles’s garden at Highgrove House. The lodge itself offers its visitors an authentic cabin feel with a warm atmosphere, complete with a slate ďŹ replace - and friendly faces. “The design was always in my head,â€?

Phil said. “It’s like a home away from home.�

The restaurant at Earl Grey Lodge is also one of 53 restaurants in Canada to be given two stars out of three in Anne Hardy’s “Where to Eat in Canada� for the third year in a row. Only 29 restaurants were awarded three stars, and 126 were awarded one star.

Phil said he thinks that the ambience separates Earl Grey Lodge from other restaurants. “It’s a very personal atmosphere,� Phil said. “It’s more than just eating out, it is an experience.�

Visitors to Earl Grey Lodge on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, are oered a three-course table d’hote menu for $45 with a choice of three dishes per course.

Thursday nights they prepare a ďŹ ve-course tasting menu for $85, and Friday, Saturday a three-course ďŹ ne dining menu is offered for $75.

Guests will never experience the same thing twice at Earl Grey Lodge, as chef Marc LeBlanc creates his own menu every day. He also grows many of his own herbs in the rock garden at the lodge and Marc said that they try to buy as many of their supplies locally as they can. “I think we have the best chef in the valley,� Clare said. “But he’s very modest.�

Hellerwork practice open

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff Have you ever wondered if your back pain would ever end? Hellerwork practicioner Jean Luc Cortat may be the answer to your prayers.

Hellerwork is a series of sessions of deep tissue body work and movement education designed to realign the body and release chronic tension and stress.

“It is very specific to each person,” Jean Luc said.

“The first session you see results.”

Jean Luc moved to Invermere from Switzerland ten years ago. He and his wife Stephanie Clerk, owner of Renaissance Wellness Centre, have a 15-month-old daughter named Vanessa.

Before getting involved with Hellerwork, Jean Luc travelled around the world as a highly-decorated chef. While working full-time as head sous chef at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Jean Luc travelled back and forth to Victoria to complete his Hellerwork certification. He graduated from Northwest Hellerwork Limited in 2005.

Hellerwork is much like massage therapy, but while massage focuses on muscles, Hellerwork addresses connective tissue called fascia.

Fascia is tissue that wraps all the muscles, muscle fibres, bones, organs and blood vessels. Ideally, the fascia is a loose, moist tissue, but when the body is under continuous stress from lack of movement or repeated movement, the fascia sticks to itself, causing knots.

Most people believe that knots and tension involve the muscles; it is actually the fascia that accumulates much of the stress.

Through deep connective tissue bodywork, movement education and dialogue, Hellerwork aims to release this tension. As well, it brings awareness to the condition, helping the patient to change the patterns that caused the problem in the first place.

Jean Luc also said that Hellerwork is great for athletes, especially golfers and runners. It is also very good for people suffering stiffness and pain from doing the same thing every day in their line of work, mill workers, for example.

Jean Luc also practices pediatric Hellerwork, which he said is good for young children suffering from things such as growing pains and scoliosis.

Hellerwork is divided into eleven separate 90minute sessions. The beginning of each session starts with an assessment by the practitioner. Jean Luc can tell many things about a person, simply by the way that they walk and their posture.

For Jean Luc, Hellerwork is about helping people live a better life.

“The release and the happiness people feel afterward - it’s good to see,” he said.

In the city, it seems simple to find a place that has a comfortable atmosphere, a good cup of coffee, and wireless internet. In Invermere, I can list these places on one hand.

The Annual Pynelogs show has also been up for a week; it features many local artists who have created everything from Scrimshaw pieces to Raku sculptures. Artist Openings are held at Pynelogs on Wednesday nights starting at 7 p.m.

There’s an upcoming Raku workshop taught by Alice Hale at her studio and if you’d like any information on this workshop or any of the other various workshops the Columbia Valley Arts Council has for children and adults, please give us a call at 342-4423.

The next show is the Clay + Ceramics Exhibition which begins on July 3rd. This group of pieces has been given a touring grant and should be quite impressive. Also, artist Colin Bell will be sharing the gallery with the Clay + Ceramics Exhibition. Colin came to Canada in 1965 after growing up and studying architecture in Argentina. He has a great love for drawing, oil painting and watercolours and. Come to the Artist Opening on Wednesday July 4th at 7 p.m.!

Nineteen pioneers to be honoured Community invited to celebrate 60 years in Community Hall Mayor Shmigelsky to make important announcement

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff When it was christened on July 1, 1947, the Cranbrook Rhythm Kings played at the Community Hall. At its 1970 post-renovation, grand re-opening, a duo called Prestat and Warthog entertained celebrants. Saturday night, at its 60th birthday party, Invermere strummer Gordon Askey and company will perform a concert and family dance to celebrate the hall and honor the pioneers who built it.

In fact, Mr. Askey organized the entire event, he said, to draw attention to the building as the District of Invermere contemplates building a new municipal structure that will usurp at least some of Community Hall’s current functions.

“I don’t want to start some emotional ‘Save the Hall’ campaign,” Mr. Askey explained. “I just thought it would be nice to honour the people who built the thing. Here it is, 60 years later, and it’s still the only place in town where you can seat 300 people for dinnner without their feet resting on concrete,” he said.

Mr. Askey announced this week that 19 Columbia Valley pioneers who participated in the construction of Community Hall will arrive by limousine to be feted for the longevity of their accomplishment.

“It’s a kind of an awareness thing to get people to take a look at it,” he said. “Maybe it makes sense to spend a hundred thousand dollars to fix the place up.”

In 1946, Mr. Askey explained, the community decided it would build the venue, then dubbed the Lake Windermere Memorial Centre, to honour the fallen soldiers from both world wars. It is remarkable, he said, that a town of only 500 was able to build the hall using only donated money, materials and labour.

The guests of honour will include Jim and Gaetan Ashworth, Joy Bond, Bud Coy, Kay Frater, Joe and Eileen Fuller, Edna Godlein, Gordon and Phyllis Lake, Jessie Lockhart, Jim McKay, Audrey Osterloh, John and Laura Ronacher, Eileen Tegart, Nancy Tegart, and George and Audrey Thornton.

Raising the money to complete the hall was not an

easy task. According to the minutes provided by the Windermere District Historical Museum, as many as 80 people attended committee meetings in the spring of 1947 to brainstorm ideas on how to raise the money needed to complete the hall.

Ideas included “a local campaign for subscriptions from residents, resort owners, former residents and wholesale firms who sold goods to local merchants,” as well as canvassing door-to-door for donations.

At a meeting on July 21, 1947, twenty days after the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the building committee presented a report entitled: “Work still to be completed.” It included the heating plant, coal bin, basement floor, washrooms, chimney, room for storage of equipment and a stairway to the rooms on the second floor.

At the meeting, then-Mayor T. C. Bell introduced, and Alf Laird seconded, a motion to empower the General Committee to borrow the $4,700 needed to complete the structure. The motion was carried.

Feature movies, the records note, were presented in the Community Hall for years to follow, to raise money to pay back the debt.

The Saturday night performance at the Community Hall will include an hour-long concert including interviews with the honoured guests, followed by two hours of dancing.

“We’ll take a break, push the chairs aside and have a dance,” Mr. Askey commented. “Then we’ll shut it down in time for everyone to walk down to the fireworks.”

Mr. Askey will be accompanied by local artists Brian Rogers, John Cronin, Kurt Reichel, Deb Ede, Brian Hoffos and Pat Hess.

Schmidt recalled at rifle shoot

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff The Lake Windermere District Rod and Gun Club held the first annual Willi Schmidt Memorial Rifle Shoot recently at the rifle range in Radium.

Norman Hendricks, president of the Rod and Gun Club, said the shoot was a success. It began with all contestants visiting Willi’s memorial tree and saying a few words.

In total, $600 was raised for range renovations.

Willi Schmidt was the main range officer at the rifle range and an executive member of the Rod and Gun Club. He passed away in September 2006.

“He was a wonderful man,” said Norman. “He is greatly missed.”

Mr. Schmidt was described as by many who knew him as a friendly man who was always willing to help anyone with their shooting. He resided in Radium, and had one daughter, Susanna, who lives in Edmonton.

“He would always bring his grandson on the float for the Canada Day parade,” Norman said.

Mr. Schmidt was held in high regard by everyone who knew him.

“He was a man with great integrity,” said club member Bob Campsall.

There were two categories in the event: Open and Hunter. Larry Buckton won the open category and Norman Hendricks won the hunter category.

British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office Invites the Public to Attend Open Houses for the Glacier/Howser Project Draft Terms of Reference The B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) invites the public to attend open houses on the draft Terms of Reference (ToR) for the Glacier/Howser Project (Project).

Purcell Green Power Inc. (Proponent) is proposing to build, own and operate two hydroelectric facilities on the East side of Duncan Reservoir in the Regional District of Central Kootenay, approximately 15 km North of Meadow Creek. The facilities would divert water from Glacier and Howser Creeks, and have a combined capacity that may reach 125 MW. The Project includes a 230 kV transmission line that would cross the Purcell Mountain range and interconnect to a substation located in the Regional District of East Kootenay, 6 km West of Invermere.

The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act, S.B.C. 2002, c.43. The purpose of the draft ToR is to identify the information that the Proponent must include in its application for an environmental assessment certificate.

The open houses are being held in advance of a public comment period on the draft ToR that will begin in July, 2007. Public notice will be given prior to the start of the comment period.

An electronic copy of the draft ToR, as well as information regarding the environmental assessment process, will be available at www.eao.gov.bc.ca.

Copies of the draft ToR will be available at public Libraries in Kaslo, Invermere, Nelson, Castlegar and Cranbrook at the time of the open houses.

Graduation is always an exciting time for both graduates and parents.

There is always a certain amount of sadness as each of you ends your schooling here in Invermere, but that sadness is more than offset by the anticipation of new challenges to come.

With so many possibilities of things to see and do, there is no time in a person’s life in which the options are so wide open. This is the time when dreams can become reality.

Land conservators study attitudes

Caring for the senior dog

They have developed a mature, predictable temperament and have outgrown their playful disobedience.

Content to lie around more, the older dog demands less play time and requires little training. However, he still needs your daily attention, just in different ways.

Time is passing at a more rapid rate now, and your dog will physically age the equivalent of about seven years in 12 months. Regular veterinary visits are important as your dog is more vulnerable to infection and prone to injury. You should discuss physical ailments, such as lumps or hair loss, changes in habits such as eating and sleeping, and behavioral issues such as snapping. These things can be early signs of illness, disease, and physical discomfort.

Your senior pet will live more comfortably if you help him stay clean. Poor mobility may be one reason why your pet no longer grooms himself thoroughly, so consider a glucosamine supplement and talk to your vet about pain management options. Basically, he is not as flexible as he once was! Regular grooming will give you a chance to observe the skin and check for warts and lumps. You may find that your pet has been living with something uncomfortable, such as matts, burrs, or grass spears.

Older pets tend to be very routine-oriented and will often be the one keeping you on a schedule. Being familiar with these habits is another way to generate useful observations. By noting changes in eating, drinking, passing stool or urine, and sleeping, you can help your vet diagnose things like diabetes, kidney, and liver disease. The problem may also be related but not as obvious, such as refusing hard food because of rotten teeth.

Discomfort may be causing your pet to be grumpier than usual. Some health concerns that may manifest as behavioral issues are loss of hearing, sight, and pain. If your dog seems to be less obedient and more easily startled, has snapped unexpectedly at another animal or person, or is showing a lack of interest in regular activities, there may be a physical problem that needs to be addressed.

Provide your senior dog with ramps and steps.

Hip and knee ligaments often rupture during routine activities such as jumping into the back of a truck or down from the bed. Injury is more likely if the dog is overweight, so switch to a low-calorie formula and get him on the scale regularly. Maintaining a healthy weight will also help the recovery process. If there have been frequent slips and falls, consider kennel-training your pet while you are out and at night.

Enjoying your aging companion is both a blessing and a responsibility. Nothing compares to the loyalty and love of an animal that has stuck by you just as much as you’ve stuck by them.

Visitors and locals should be aware that campfires are allowed. However, a routine ban on any fire except a campfire is in effect throughout the Southeast fire zone and until further notice.

A campfire is defined as less than one metre high, less than one metre wide, and used for light, cooking or warmth - not to dispose of waste material.

“Every year in June we implement the ban,” said Cy McConnell, forest protection officer.

This open fire ban applies to provincial parks and to all public and private land outside of organized areas.

The Southeast fire zone encompasses the area extending from the U.S. border to the Mica Dam in the north, and from the Okanagan Highlands or Monashee Mountains in the west to the

B.C-Alberta border in the east.

Nevertheless, Mr. McConnell does remind people that they must still be cautious when dealing with campfires.

“The more we can make people aware of the hazard out there, the easier it is,” he said.

Mr. McConnell said there are some things people can do to ensure that their fire does not become out of control.

First, keep your fires small, and have water and tools nearby in case your fire does get out of control.

“If you let your fire escape, you are potentially liable,” he said.

Secondly, never leave your fire unattended and make sure that it is completely extinguished when you leave.

“It’s a good thing to be mindful. You just can’t take it too lightly,” he added.

Windermere Ladies defeated by weather The Wednesday afternoon weather menu continues to confound and confuse the ladies of the Windermere Golf Club.

On June 13, cold weather caused the ladies to call it a day after nine holes and winners were declared based on the shortened day.

Winners of Nine Holes Low Net included: Pat Andruschuk, Norma Piche, Pauline Haltman and Helga Boker. Cathy Waite claimed the Putting Pot, but the Deuce Pot went unclaimed.

Wednesday June 20 saw 27 ladies taking advantage of a clear, warm day. A combination of putts and net scores was the game of the day.

After the mathematics were com-

pleted, the winners were: Gail Cole, Mary Jean Anakin, Sandra Howard, Diane Kochoruk, Sherry Avery and Deb Plato.

Gail Cole took home the Putting Pot, and Joyce Robinson the 50/50.

Golf tournament buys health aid for hospital Submitted by Nelda Harker The Fairmont and District Lions hosted the Coy’s Fun Day of Golf on June 16th.

We thank the Coy family for their generosity in donating their golf course to make this possible.

Through the donations from community-minded businesses and a great turnout of golfers, the Lions met their pledge to the East Kootenay Foundation for Health.

A $5,000 state-of-the-art “slit lamp” is being purchased and will be housed in the Cranbrook Regional

Hospital Operating Room for use by opthamologists and physicians for treatment of eye trauma, removal of cataracts and other eye surgeries.

Thanks to “Doc” Lang for his music, Mike Stange for barbecuing the meat perfectly and the entire Lions family for their hard work.

Thank you, Mr. Himmelspach Dear Editor: I just wished to express a thank you to Mr. Himmelspach for listening to some of the concerns expressed by recreation users of his property. Following a letter to the editor, written by myself back in April, contact was made with Mr. Himmelspach – the owner of Grizzly Ridge Properties.

A meeting was organized with the owner, his planner and logger, together with representatives from various recreation groups around the valley. Locals and tourists alike have been using these trails for many years and recognize the value of keeping historical trails open such as the old road to Panorama – “The Canyon Trail.”

Mr. Himmelspach allowed us recreation users to vent our opinions around valued recreation trails on his property and for them to inform us of some of the plans for logging and possibly future development.

Since this meeting, the logger has attempted to be more sensitive to the existing trails and to clear them

following the felling of the trees. The recreation users put together a list of a few trails that still exist on this land so that Mr. Himmelspach could be made more aware of the value of these trails to existing and ongoing mountain bikers, walking/running groups and tourists.

There were a couple of local volunteers who were to accompany Mr. Himmelspach on a tour of these trails to enlighten him of trails we wished to preserve.

We hope to continue to cooperate with Mr. Himmelspeck so that future development could be melded with existing mountain bike/recreation trails. We feel that this cooperation will only add to the value of his property in addition to keeping historical trails open for future generations of locals and tourists for ongoing enjoyment.

Thank you, Mr. Himmelspach, for being open to working with the locals for future mutual benefit.

The District of Invermere will solicit bids for a website redesign it hopes will expand the information currently available to users, and improve usability.

District of Invermere Chief Administrator Chris Prosser said staff used the Fernie website as a model when preparing the request for proposal. The move to replace the district’s three-year-old web, he said, would jibe with Council’s recently-adopted communication policy which calls for more direct communication with the public.

“With the need to increase public participation in government,” Mr. Prosser wrote in his presentation to council, “a website can be an important part of the Council’s communication strategy.”

There is currently $2,000 budgeted for the project, he said.

‘Flying Max’ to join adventure race

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff Max Fanderl, 42, has been chosen to represent Canada in the 2007 Red Bull X-Alps adventure race.

The 850-kilometre race where athletes must hike and paraglide to the finish line is described as the “most extreme adventure race out there” and runs from Krippenstein, Austria to Monte Carlo.

“I am really looking forward to it,” Max said. “Being chosen is an accomplishment all on its own.”

Max moved to Canada from Switzerland in 1990 and moved to Invermere in 1993, where he is now living with his wife Penny Powers, his three-year-old daughter Katia and his 15-month-old son Erik. ”I moved here because of the flying,” Max said.

“The good weather conditions, the dryness and the Rocky Mountain trench.”

Much to their disappointment, his family will not be accompanying him to the race in Europe.

“But Penny made me promise to have fun, so that I would want to do it again in two years,” Max said.

Max got the opportunity to be a part of the race when the original Canadian representative, Josh Briggs, backed out due to an injury.

It was his supporter, Frank Kernick, who suggested that Max apply after he saw an Internet forum that said they were looking for applicants.

“I was so busy with work and family I didn’t even consider going,” Max said. “But Frank said ‘Max, you should go, think about it.”

And think he did. Knowing that Frank was a very

“I said if you go, I go,” Max said.

Frank Kernick of Canmore also developed Lakeview Meadows on the east side of Lake Windermere.

To his surprise, Frank came back after a few days of deliberation and gave Max the news - they were applying for the X-Alps.

After the initial application, an International Committee in Europe determines who is best qualified to represent Canada.

“After doing some research, I was hoping they would pick someone else,” Max laughed.

At the end of April, he received the call. Max and Frank were going to Europe.

“The first thing I thought was ‘I better run Mount Swansea and start training.”

That is just what he did. Max trains one to four hours every day. His training includes a mountain run lasting three or four hours, with 30 pounds of supplies on his back, going to the gym and running the Lakeview Meadows stairs up to 13 times.

“I have to train in a way that I don’t exhaust myself,” Max said. “People doing the Ironman exhaust themselves in one day, and this is like 15 or 20 Ironmans.”

Along with all this, he is working as a marketing/ development consultant and a full-time dad.

Max begins the race on July 23 and he is looking forward to the challenge.

“It’s like an adventure,” Max said.

Max also said he is excited to experience the mountains and scenery.

“You feel everything that is going on more than in any other aircraft because you are a part of it,” Max said. “It is just you and nature out there.”

The Kings rule again The Windermere Valley Kings were named the East Kootenay Babe Ruth Champions on June 24th in Cranbrook.

The tournament ran from June 22 to 24, and the Kings defeated three teams from Cranbrook and one team from Creston. The team finished up their season with only four losses.

Akisqnuk Rediscovery Camp

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff Akisqnuk Rediscovery Camp, located at Whiteswan Lake south of Canal Flats, is a summer camp with a difference.

Not only does it offer a wide range of outdoor games and activities, it honours the teachings and traditions of the Ktuxana First Nations people.

“I think to understand who they are and where they come from is important for anyone from any culture,” said Robert Firth, director of Akisqnuk Rediscovery Camp.

Robert works as a community healing coordinator with the Akisqnuk First Nation but he always wanted to work with youth and start a summer outdoor program for them.

“In 2002, I sent the youth I work with to the Ghost River Rediscovery Camp just outside Cochrane for a week to see how they would like it,” Robert said.

After the week, the kids returned and told him they all had a wonderful time.

“I thought there is no reason we have to take these kids to Alberta to experience this, when we can create one here,” Robert said.

A year later, after receiving support from organizations such as the Columbia Basin Trust, Vancouver Sun Children’s Fund, Interior Health, Regional District of East Kootenay and the Akisqnuk First Nation, the camp opened for its first summer.

The site for the camp was chosen not only for its beauty, but for its historical significance.

“According to the elders,” Robert said, “ that was a special site that was used for vision quests by young men of the nation.”

Robert also said there are still pictographs visible on a rocky ledge over looking the lake.

“It was quite a special place,” Robert said. “You still can see how special it is thousands of years later.”

This is one of the reasons representatives from Akisqnuk, Ktunaxa Nation elders, and B.C. Parks thought Whiteswan Lake was a suitable location for the camp. Robert said location is an important part of

teaching First Nations youth more about their history and traditions. “ For many different reasons that history has disappeared,” Robert said. “For young people to return to a place of a vision quest hundreds of years ago - I think it completes the circle.”

The first of four camps begins in July, differentiated by the age groups who attend them.

“Each camp is specifi-

cally geared for their age and their stage in life,” Robert said.

T h e youngest age group goes to “Squirrel Camp,” a camp for children aged six to eight years old that lasts for seven days. The remaining three camps are geared for an older crowd: “Bear Cub Camp” is for boys and girls aged nine to 12. “Young Buck Camp” is for boys aged 12 to 16, and “Young Doe Camp” is for girls aged 12 to 16. The Bear Cub Camp lasts for ten

days, while the Young Buck and Young Doe Camps last for 11 days.

Although each camp is specifically geared towards a certain age group, all campers will be able to participate in activities such as swimming, fishing, hiking and overnighting under the stars. All campers will also learn the ecology of the area and traditional Aboriginal games from Aboriginal cultures around the world.

Elders from the Akisqnuk First Nation also come and spend time with the campers. They tell stories and legends, and teach campers about their natural world.

“There are also professionals who volunteer and come in to teach everything from art to music to building to crafts,” Robert said.

Most campers who attend Akisqnuk are local, but there have been campers who have travelled from as far south as Washington state, as far west as Vancouver, and as far east as northern Alberta.

“It is a great opportunity to make new friends and learn about the culture of the original people of the valley,” Robert said. Although the focus is on aboriginal traditions, children from all cultures are welcome.

Parents should know that Akisqnuk Rediscovery is well-monitored and completely safe. All guides are trained in first aid, counselling techniques and lifesaving; and there is a paramedic on staff.

There is also a youth counsellor who works with the campers to meet any special emotional needs. The ratio of guides to campers is one to three, and safety of campers is the number one concern. ”I think the most serious accident we have had in four years is a skinned knee,” Robert said. “We take really good care of your kids; they are fed well and we make sure they go to bed tired every day, learn new skills and have a good time every day.”

There are 15 spots available in each camp so if you plan to register your child, now would be a good time.

God Keep Our Land Jared Enns Lake Windermere Alliance Church As we near July 1st once again, our sense of patriotism and national duty is brought to the forefront. In the celebrations, the parade, the fireworks, etc. we appreciate once again a heightened sense of community.

Canada Day is about our nation as a whole, and our part of the bigger picture of what makes Canada such a great country. At the same time there is in Canada Day an individual responsibility that needs to be acted upon. “What is my contribution to what Canada will be in the future?”

Our national anthem calls us to certain tasks, and yet how many of us still remember all of the words?
