Gonzales sworn in to House By JENNIFER NESBITT ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Former Westerville City Councilwoman Anne Gonzales officially stepped up to become the representative for Ohio’s 19th House District Jan. 3. Gonzales was sworn in to her new office by U.S. Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-Genoa Township) in Westerville’s City Hall, which was filled with officials from city council and Westerville schools, and Genoa Township, Blendon Township and Reynoldsburg, as well as Gonzales’ family members and supporters. “It was many people in this room who encouraged me to run for state representative,” Gonzales said after her swearing-in. She said she would not have been elected to the seat without a campaign of active volunteers, who hand-addressed and deliv-

ered 22,000 letters and knocked on tens of thousands of doors during the campaign. Gonzales defeated incumbent Democrat Marian Harris and Libertarian Mike Johnston for the seat in November. “It’s such an amazing experience, and I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in today without the many people who helped me through the campaign, and the support of my family,” Gonzales said. Gonzales also said that her successful campaign brought a promise from Republican House leadership that she could serve on committees of her choosing in Columbus. “That means a lot for this district because there’s going to be good representation at the Statehouse,” she said. Gonzales, who has lived in Westerville for 16 years and served on city council from 2001 until her election to state office, is the

first Westerville resident to represent Ohio’s 19th House District since 1980. The district includes Westerville, New Albany, Reynoldsburg, Canal Winchester, Groveport, portions of Columbus and Obetz, and Jefferson and Madison townships. Before her swearing-in, Westerville City Council Chairman Mike Heyeck said Gonzales will put her high energy to good use in benefiting the district. “It’s going to bode well for the district. It’s also going to bode well for the state of Ohio,” Heyeck said. Gonzales is a paralegal who graduated from Otterbein University with a bachelor’s degree in general psychology. She lives in Westerville with her husband, John, and their three children, Jennifer, Lois and Richard. jnesbitt@thisweeknews.com

March, which meant it needed to put the program in place by the next school year to meet state requirements. But the state announced in midDecember that it would once again allow districts to apply for a waiver to delay implementation, this time for two years. “Due to the financial and space hardships, we will give that waiver serious consideration,” said Karen McClellan, the district’s deputy chief academic officer. Superintendent Dan Good said state politics have made it difficult for districts to plan for things such as the implementation of allday kindergarten. The legislature is due to pass

The state budget deficit and a new governor are leaving Westerville City Schools officials with a lot of guesswork in 2011. “The word for the first six months of the year is uncertainty, if not for the whole year,” Westerville school board president Kristi Robbins said. “We’ll be looking closely at the Statehouse and monitoring it to determine the direction we need to go.” The overall uncertainty could lead the district to once again apply for a waiver to delay the implementation of all-day, everyday kindergarten. Highlands Park renovations on schedule, budget By JENNIFER NESBITT ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Westerville residents should be able to kick off the summer season at Highlands Pool. Renovations to the 38-year-old aquatic center, which started in early August, are on schedule to be completed in time for the pool to open for the 2011 season, which begins on Memorial Day, said Mike Hooper, development administrator for the Westerville Department of Parks and Recreation. “The project is moving along

well, on schedule and on budget,” Hooper said. The $7.6-million renovation at the park includes replacing the previous facilities at the aquatic center with a tot pool, leisure pool, a slide-and-spray playground, an eight-lane, 25-meter pool with a diving well, a lazy river and patio space. The city is constructing all-new buildings at the center, which will be energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Also at the park, the renovaSee HIGHLANDS, page A6

Fundraising continues for Hanby Park depot By JENNIFER NESBITT ThisWeek Community Newspapers

The city is continuing to raise funds to build a bike hub along the Ohio to Erie Trail in Hanby Park. Ground is scheduled to be broken this spring for the project, dubbed the Hanby Train Depot. The city has allocated $50,000 toward the $150,000 cost of the bike hub and the Westerville Department of Parks and Recreation is working with community partners to raise money to fund the remainder of the cost. So far, the city has received money from the Westerville Parks Fund, the Westerville Parks Foun-

dation and Sertoma, which is selling bricks to raise money for the project, said Mike Hooper, development administrator for the Westerville Department of Parks and Recreation. Hooper said the fundraising efforts will help to shape the Hanby Train Depot, as the city is looking for a sponsor to fund a fireplace for the structure and is working with Uptown businesses to pay for a $15,000 information kiosk. Inclusion of those elements will depend entirely on funding, Hooper said, though he said the kiosk could be added to the train depot after its initial construction. See HANBY, page A2
