Chamber sets February luncheon Today’s students learn and interact with others very differently when compared to their parents.

In fact, by 2016, the largest English speaking country in the world will be China.

In response to these changes, the Hilliard City School District has embarked on an unprecedented journey of self-assessment, discovery, and future planning.

To ensure that our students are properly equipped to successfully compete in a highly competitive global work force,

over 150 staff members and representatives from the community worked collaboratively to research the district’s 2020 improvement initiatives.

This critical product will serve as the road map to support our students on this very exciting and rewarding journey.

On Feb. 25, please join us for lunch at 11:30 a.m. at the Heritage Golf Club. Superintendent Dale McVey, assistant superintendent Andy Riggle, director

Hilliard Women in Business luncheon set for Feb. 16 Isaac will speak on ‘How to bring your marketing plan to life and grow your business’ Cheryl Isaac is a business planner who helps make business planning simple for new businesses and small businesses starting something new in business.

Isaac is an entrepreneur and the author of the book, A Different Business as well as the creator of the start-up business planning boot camp, The 48 Hour Business Plan Challenge.

She is also a blogger for Entrepreneur.com; her blog is called the “Plan With Pizzazz.”

Isaac is an immigrant entrepreneur who was born and raised in Liberia, West Africa. She is a survivor of the brutal Liberian civil war.

Isaac is a former banker turned entrepreneur, now helping to make business planning simple for entrepreneurs and startups.

These are the values important to teach our children – and I love that we teach them by example.

Another great example we can set is to make a conscious effort to buy our goods and services from local businesses.

There are so many benefits: keeping dollars in the local economy allows the businesses to continue to enrich the whole community; the better our local businesses are doing, more local jobs will be available; a vibrant and healthy business community provides character and an economic advantage to the city.

And if you’ve looked around lately, you will notice that there is not much you could want or need to buy that you can’t get right here in the Hilliard area!

So before you make that next purchase, think about whether or not Hilliard has a local merchant and shop local. Because, like the slogan says, “It’s all here … in Hilliard!”

Keep your eyes open for a new Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce initiative making it easier for you to shop local and save money at the same time. Have a great February!

Hilliard-based company captures TechColumbus innovation award Alec Cook, chief technology officer for Hilliard-based Vanner, was a winner at the TechColumbus Innovation Awards ceremony Feb. 3 at Battelle Hall in the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

Cook and Vanner won in the category of Green Innovation.

According to TechColumbus, “Under Mr. Cook’s direction, Vanner has been a leader in patented power conversion and power management technolo-

gies, including battery chargers/monitors, inverters, CANbus accessories, converters, and equalizers for traditional and hybrid powered commercial buses, ambulances, military vehicles, luxury coaches, mobile offices and heavy duty and work trucks.

Since 2009, the Vanner Green Initiative has aimed to conserve and recycle in every aspect of day-to-day operation using Vanner power conversion and trans-

formation products.”

Vanner’s website said their nomination was for their work with hybrid solutions for the bus and truck industries. Vanner’s Hybrid Beltless Alternator, used on hybrid transit buses, “replaces the traditional alternator and improves mpg, reduces idle and exhaust emissions, improves air quality, eliminates energy dependence and improves energy efficiency. Fleets can save thousands of dollars and receive significant reduced maintenance time and expense with the HBA for the transit bus.”

Since 1977, Vanner has been involved in power conversion for commercial vehicles.

Among its engineering projects is a collaboration with The Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research and other parties under a Third Frontier grant to electrify the bus to make it cleaner, more energy efficient with less maintenance.

Winners in 16 categories were chosen from central Ohio individuals, companies and tech-

nology teams for their outstanding achievements in technology leadership and innovation.

Winners were selected by independent judges from the community. More than 1,000 people attended the event.

“The Innovation Awards has become the premier event for the central Ohio tech community, showcasing the best and brightest individuals, companies and technology teams for their contributions and achievements in innovation,” said Ted Ford, president and CEO of TechColumbus. “The leadership and work of these winners is a testament to the strong and thriving innovation economy here in the central Ohio region.”

TechColumbus is a nonprofit organization that focuses on technology-based economic development in the 15 counties of central Ohio.

Ambassdorships Would You Like to Be a Chamber Ambassador?

A Chamber Ambassador is a member of the Hilliard Area Chamber who is interested in becoming more active in the Chamber and within the Hilliard business community.

Ambassadors work with Chamber staff and board members to increase membership, improve membership retention and strengthen awareness of Chamber benefits. Ambassadors improve communication within the Chamber

by creating relationships with members and serving as liaisons between the Chamber and its membership.

Any Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce member in good standing can become an Ambassador as long as they do not hold a board position or are not a chairperson with another local area Chamber.
