Grant will help expand STEM program By DAVID S. OWEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers The Reynoldsburg school district received a $52,000 grant from the Metro Management Group that will be used to expand its STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program. Metro Management is the board that oversees Metro Early College High School’s day-to-day operations.

Reynoldsburg schools spokesperson Tricia Moore said the money will be used to launch a STEM program called “bodies” at the Summit Road high school campus next fall. It will be folded into the district’s Health, Science and Human Services Academy. The program is considered an early college program and will be offered to seniors who will earn credit for two Ohio State University biology cours-

es, Bio 113 and 114, Moore said. She said the program focuses on the study of human biology systems, including anatomy. Students enrolled in the course will attend classes Monday through Thursday for three hours per day at the Summit Road Campus and will attend a lab class at Ohio State on Fridays. Near the end of the school year, the students will conduct research with the

help of a professional involved in the human biology systems field. The grant money will be used to pay for materials, lab supplies and training for teachers who will oversee the course, Moore said. She said enrollment in the program and its admission requirements will be determined in the coming months. Notices about the course will be mailed to parents before school starts next fall.

“This will create opportunities for students to receive early college credit and have a pretty unique experience among high school students taking highlevel biology and anatomy studies,” Moore said. City to offer summer camp for children By DAVID S. OWEN ThisWeek Community Newspapers The Reynoldsburg Parks and Recreation Department will offer an all-day summer day camp for children beginning in June. Department director Jason Shamblin said the Reynoldsburg Adventure Camp will provide children with a variety of fun and educational activities all day during the summer months.

He said the program grew out of a need to have a summer day camp that could provide working families with a safe, fun place for their children during the week. “We run a playground program that runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., but it doesn’t run the entire summer. As we talked to people, really, there was a need for more of an all-day program,” Shamblin said. “Our society has changed … With so many working families in our community, it’s become more dif-

ficult for them to utilize that program, so it’s time to adapt to their needs,” he said. The Reynoldsburg Adventure Camp will run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at Blacklick Woods Metro Park. Shamblin said before- and after-camp care will be available from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. He said participants will also have opportunities See SUMMER CAMP, page A3

Cason retires as ThisWeek executive editor By JEFF DONAHUE ThisWeek Community Newspapers Friday, March 18, marks the end of an era at ThisWeek Community Newspapers. Late that afternoon, vice president and executive editor Ben Cason will shut down his computer, gather his cell phone

and coat and quietly stroll out of the newsroom the way he has every week since 1993. However, come Monday morning, for the first time in 18 years, he won’t be leading a newsroom discussion on politics or the NCAA basketball Ben Cason tournament.

Cason announced his retirement to ThisWeek staffers March 11, concluding a career that spanned the height of the Watergate era as an editor at The Washington Post to building one of the nation’s most respected community newspaper organizations. Under
