SWEET TREATS

The five Republican candidates seeking three seats on Hilliard City Council in the May 3 primary all say they will work to attract more businesses to Hilliard if elected. Two incumbents, Albert Iosue and William Uttley, are up for re-election. Joining them in the race for the three council seats are challengers Joseph Erb, Nathan Painter and Cornell Robertson. In addition to Iosue and Uttley’s seats, a third vacancy was created after council member Tim Roberts chose not to seek re-election. Iosue was elected to city council four years ago and Uttley, who left council because of term limit restrictions, which have since been lifted, was appointed to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Dan Nichter. All three seats are for four-year terms that would start Jan. 1, 2012. The candidates for council, in alphabetical order, are: • Joseph Erb, 28, vice president of government relations for Strategic Public Partners Group, has served as the senior legislative aide to the Speaker Pro Tempore of the Ohio House of Representatives for five years. Erb has lived in Hilliard for four years, has a degree in political science from Ohio State University, and is married. The couple is expecting their first child

Police investigating apparent suicide By GARY BUDZAK ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Authorities say a man whose Hilliard home was searched for child pornography early on April 12 committed suicide by shooting himself

three hours later in the Hilliard Police Department parking lot. John T. Callicotte, 46, of 4615 Edgewyn Ave., had a search warrant executed on his home shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement

and Homeland Security. According to the warrant, the residence was searched for evidence of possession and/or receipt of child pornography. “We don’t have any record of him until this,” Hilliard Police Chief Doug Francis said.

He said video cameras had indicated that Callicotte pulled into the front of the lot at the Safety Services Building, 5171 Northwest Parkway, and sat in the lot for a period of time See POLICE, page A3

The impact of more housing — bringing with it more students — in the Hilliard and South-Western city school districts was one of the major concerns expressed about the Big Darby Town Center Master Plan at a public meeting April 5. The mixed-use development plan calls for the building of single-family homes and apartments, townhomes, 300,000 square feet of retail space and a hotel. Congressman Steve Stivers’ new Hilliard office is open for business. Stivers and a seven-member staff opened the 4,285-squarefoot office in the newest section of the former Hilliard police department building at 3790 Municipal Way last week. Stivers’ desk, books and mementos were placed in his personal office, and he was still arranging pictures on the walls as a tour was given of the facility on April 11. “This is the first time I’ve been in since it’s been done,” Stivers said from the conference room.
