April 15 event to focus on ‘Redesigning Ohio’

GOLF OUTING

Linda Woggon, vice president of Governmental Affairs of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, will speak at our April 15 luncheon on the details of Redesigning Ohio and the progress of Campaign for Jobs.

The luncheon is sponsored by Linda Woggon First Service Federal Credit Union and Rider Financial Group.

The Ohio Chamber of Commerce led an initiative which took over one year to develop recommendations to be presented to Gov. John Kasich and the members of the Ohio House and Senate members to address the huge deficit in the budget.

It includes an analysis of Ohio’s current economic situation, a review of best practices from other states and recommendations on what Ohio can do to start changing the way we budget and operate as a state. Doing so will make government cheaper, more efficient and better prepared to deliver the services necessary to meet the needs of 21st century. Specifically, the report includes ten significant reforms ranging from budget and management reform to local government efficiencies.

Chair’s perspective

Issue 7: Get to know the facts about the school levy The Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce has many roles and many goals for their membership. Business advocacy is an important aspect of the job we do for our members and we take it very seriously: from reviewing legislation that may affect local companies to endorsing issues that can be a benefit to those companies as well.

This year, the chamber’s board of directors has endorsed Issue 7, the levy for the Hilliard City School District.

The board, made up of local business owners and employees from many different sectors of commerce, felt over-

whelmingly that the passage of Issue 7 would have a positive effect on our membership.

It’s never easy, particularly in this macroeconomic cliHEATHER mate, to ask taxpayers for more money.

KECK Ohio has been hit as hard as most in seeing a loss in property values and decrease in family income. When you’re worried about your own property and bottom line, it’s hard

to think about increasing any tax you pay. However, we all have an obligation to consider the impact on our community as a whole resulting from any levy failure.

Communities that support their school districts see a return on that investment in the form of higher property values (higher home sales, ability to utilize the equity in your home) and a stronger commercial business base (more people who want to live here equals greater need for services). Areas with exceptional schools tend to hold their values better than the market over-

all, when the economy underperforms, according to Collateral Analytics, a firm that specializes in real estate market data.

And the Hilliard School District is one of only seven districts in Franklin County with an Excellent with Distinction Rating in 2010; the top rating a district can receive. Of those seven districts our district is the largest, the most diverse and has the highest percentage of economically disadvantaged students. We have the second lowest cost per student among them, as well, as reported by the Audit and Account-

ability Committee created in 2008 by the district. There are more than 600 districts in the state, and only 81 districts received this rating. Hilliard schools are working hard to provide value to our community and we should support that effort.

Old Bag of Nails Pub supports the Hilliard community by contributing money, food and gift cards to all the school sports teams as well as other charities. The Most Involved Member of the Hilliard Chamber for 2011 is Josh Hornik of Security Plus Insurance Agency. Hornik has lived in Hilliard his entire life.

He graduated from Hilliard High School in 1995 and earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Franklin University. Hornik has been with Security Plus for the past five years and is focused on new business development and marketing.

Hornik helped to start the Morning Business Network meetings and is currently serving as a Chamber Ambassador. He has been a constant volunteer for the Hollyfest Arts and Crafts show and participated in several Business Expos. Hornik also has volunteered to interview students for the Hollyfest Scholarship

Two chamber businesses and a chamber member were honored at last month’s annual meeting luncheon. Insource was presented the “Established Business” award. Headquartered in Hilliard since its founding in 1999, Insource is a team of former UPS and FedEx employees who help large companies renegotiate the terms and conditions of their contracts with these two major shipping companies. With sales increasing from $850,000 in 2006 to $5.4 million in 2010, Insource was recognized by Inc. Magazine as the 531st fastest growing company in the United States as well as ranking 6 on the Central Ohio Fast 50 list in 2010.

The Old Bag of Nails Pub has been recognized with the Hilliard Chamber’s Emerging Business Award for 2011. Congratulations if you’ve taken the step to create objectives for your company. Many companies miss this crucial step.

The process of setting objectives throughout the organization can be an extremely powerful leadership tool; and while actually meeting objectives, a great deal of culture setting can occur.

There is one specific point however to make about setting objectives that is critical for success.

JIM CANTERUCCI If we in fact really use objectives as a leadership tool designed to get us to the growth targets called for by the strategy then we have to be thinking like a change leader.

Whether we are setting objectives for growth or even for targeted shrinkage we are basically saying that this year must be different than last year.

So, we are, in effect, saying that behavior of individual people must be different than last year.

What are the chances of that behavior changing if these changes aren’t explicitly included in each person’s objectives, in the objectives of their managers,

and coached at every opportunity?

In other words what are the chances that at the end of this year you will actually meet your strategic targets? What is being done differently so far this year?

Identify the changes. Work the changes. Support the changes. Coach through the changes. Because you have to reach that goal.
