UAACC announces 20th Annual Golf Classic

The Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce (UAACC) is pleased to announce the date for the 20th Annual Golf Classic. The event will be held Monday, May 23, at the OSU Golf Course on the Scarlet, with a noon shotgun start.

Head golf professional Brian Kelly will offer a free clinic at 11 a.m. for all players prior to the noon start.

The Chamber Golf Classic is a two-person scramble and is an excellent way to entertain clients and

spend a day with business associates and friends.

The cost is $130 per golfer, which includes green fees, cart, and boxed lunch, beverages on the course, great door prizes and dinner. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

This event is open to the public; anyone interested in golfing is welcome to attend.

Community Market Day set for Saturday, May 7 The Community Market Place is a oneday event that is being held all over the community on Saturday, May 7. It begins at 9 a.m. and continues throughout the day. People who would still like to participate may still sign up on the Chamber website - www.uachamber.org. Anyone wishing to take advantage of all of the great sales throughout the community may go online to map their route.

We are ready for the sale and our business campaign is still going strong. Committee representatives have been going door to door visiting local businesses encouraging them to post their sales on the Chamber website and place posters promoting the event in their store front windows. Classified ads will continue to run in six surrounding communities promoting this event.

The response is amazing. Our local businesses welcome us with open arms and our larger businesses are contacting their corporate head quarters telling them what the Chamber is doing in Upper Arlington.

Our community partners — The Upper Arlington City Schools and the UA Civic Association — are very supportive and are helping the Chamber spread the news

about this event. The school district is exploring the many possibilities for an educational tie-in for next year. The UA Civic Association is having their walk the weekend before and each participant has been informed about the event if there are questions. The UA Area Chamber has spread the word through multiple mediums including email chains, social networking, print advertising, internet and more. It has been a grassroots effort and the Chamber is thrilled with the response and continued interest that our residents and businesses have provided. Member perspective — Bello Giardino Daniel Ney, president of Bello Giardino, says “spring is here.”

Located at 1405 Chambers Road, Bello Giardino — also known in Italian as “beautiful garden” — offers a wide variety of services. Everything from yard clean-up, property maintenance, mowing, design, construction and outdoor fireplaces.

Ney is originally from Cincinnati and is a graduate of Ohio State University with a degree in horticulture. He is a specialist in sports turf. An avid outdoorsman, Ney participates in many extreme sports, from rock climbing to long-distance mountain biking.

After graduation, he decided to stay in Columbus and is now a Clintonville resident. He has been in business for 18 years and in his current location for the past five years.

Chamber First Thursdays: An evening of mingling, eyewear On April 7, Riverside Eye Center had its first annual trunk show. It was an evening of fun and fashionable eyewear with plenty of mingling.

Just imagine being able to see the latest trends in designer eyewear and speak directly with those who represent the company, not to mention an exclusive opportunity to save big time. This evening was a perfect example of mingling with the chamber community and bringing people closer to their new look.

The spring real estate marOUG YAN ket in Upper Arlington looks a little different this year.

Typically, after spring break, listing activity increases and for-sale signs pop up all over the city. Although there is a nice selection of homes on the market, the number of listing for the 2011 first quarter is down 23.8 percent, as per the Columbus Board of Realtors (CBR). The month of April has added 71 new UA listings since the first quarter analysis was released, but not enough to close the gap…yet.

Upper Arlington is not alone in the decline of new listings.

There has been a decline in all of central Ohio. The total inventory at the end of the first quarter is approximately 22 percent down from last year as per the CBR. The upside to this change is encouraging for Upper Arlington. Homeowners are beginning to “nest” and rebuild their reserves. Provided the “UA Amenity Package” continues to be attractive and listing activity does not surge, we should look for more price stabilization and maybe a modest increase in average sale prices.

Already we are observing an increase in home improvements and remodeling projects for those who decided not to list their home for sale this spring.

Fact: Over the past three years, Upper Arlington’s average home sale price has remained stable, with a small increase last year.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I never really wanted to grow up, and in fact still struggle with this question. As a kid most of my family members owned their own businesses (Macaluso Vending, Macaluso Fruit Company, Jegs, Ohio Grain). I remember as a kid assuming that one day I would have my own company as well.

I love the day-to-day challenges that fall on my shoulders that I get to find solutions to, and the interaction with clients and employees.

What is on your iPod? There is a great mix all types of music — country, R&B, rock. Hitting random right now I get Dave Matthews, Guns n’Roses, the Schuers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Counting Crows, 311, The Eagles, The Police, Naughty By Nature, Phish, OSU Band, and some how Cyndi Lauper (how did that get in there?).

Who inspires you?

My wife Krystin. The work that goes into running a house, especially my house, is truly inspiring. We have two sons (Brayden, 4 and Luke, almost 2) and she has a third (indicating himself).

Running a home with three hurricanes constantly running through her life, I can only imagine the challenge to keep us all in line, clothed, fed and on task.

On top of all that, she is the first to volunteer for any cause that needs her. She is a room mother at

preschool, she gives her time to the pleasure gild of Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and is on the Coldwell Banker King Thompson Foundation Board. On top of all, that she is a great Realtor and keeps our real estate business going strong. To do all that she does with the love that she shows us keeps me inspired.

Favorite toy as a kid?

Cars, trucks and sporting equipment.

One thing you could not do to save your life?

Spell. Spellcheck is one of my best friends, but most of the time it can’t even figure out what I’m trying to spell.

What do you love most about your job?

The people. Every day I get to meet new people, hear new stories, and solve new problems. There are so many great people in our community, and I enjoy getting the opportunity to meet then in my work with the chamber, with Macaluso Landscaping, and in my work as a Realtor with Coldwell Banker King Thompson.
