Grove City Council on May 2 got some good news about road improvements and local employment. The city will receive $6.3 million in state funds to help widen the last four-lane segment of Stringtown Road. The Ohio Public Works Commission announced in a letter received May 2 that Grove City was awarded the grant, Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage told council. “This is a real compliment to our engineering firm … (and) a real compliment to our city,” Stage said. The project is expected to cost $7.1 million, so only about $800,000 will have to come directly from the city. Grant funds will be dispersed in July, with en-

City seeking plans to develop town center By LISA AURAND ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Grove City is requesting proposals for the redevelopment of the town center. A city request for proposals seeks a developer “with the creativity, experience and financial capacity to achieve an integrated environment.” Developers have their choice of creating a plan for some or all of the 16 sub-areas that Frank Elmer of Lincoln Street Studio architectural and planning firm identified for redevelopment in
the 2008 town center plan. The deadline for submissions is 3 p.m. June 16. “Much of the property he considered to be under-utilized,” development director Chuck Boso said. The areas in the RFP include both public and private property. The city provides potential developers information about the ownership of parcels in the proposed redevelopment area and is willing to coordinate meetings with private property owners to See TOWN CENTER, page A2

Friends open antiques Golf event to aid Meals on Wheels shop in town center Mayor’s Cup By LISA AURAND ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Registration is open for the 23rd annual Mayor’s Cup Golf Outing. The Grove City event benefits LifeCare Alliance of Central Ohio, which provides Meals on Wheels service to Franklin County residents, Grove City mayor Richard “Ike” Stage said. “The objective (when it started) was to
have a social event, something that would benefit a viable charity. And Meals on Wheels came up right away because of their service to our residents,” Stage said. Together, the city’s annual spring golf outing and summer mud volleyball tournament have raised about $100,000 for the charity during the last two decades, Stage estimated. “It’s an extremely worthwhile endeavor,” he said.

Last year, the event raised more than $6,000 in spite of rain on the day of the 18hole scramble. City law director Stephen Smith Jr. was a member of the winning team and intends to return to defend his title. “We’re hoping for better weather. We’ll see how that goes,” Smith said after pointing out his name, which is engraved along with those of all the winners on the Mayor’s See GOLF, page A3

Two friends’affection for each other and enthusiasm for vintage goods moved them to open a new antiques shop in Grove City’s historic town center. Owners Heather Bonweg and Becky Faciane said they have finished furnishing and stocking Faciane & Bonweg Fine Furniture
and Antiquities, 4086 Broadway, which opened in December. “People who come in here now are surprised because it looks so much different,” Bonweg said. The pair’s friendship started 17 years ago when Bonweg began dating and then married Faciane’s son at age 18. The women remained friends after Faciane’s See FRIENDS, page A2
