Former director charged with felony theft

Reynoldsburg’s community development committee on May 2 took a proposal for a summer day camp off its agenda for now. The main reason, according to parks and recreation director Jason Shamblin, was the inability to project participation in the program and how much money to request from council to offset the direct cost of it. “We weren’t able to reach the numbers that we felt we’d set to offset the direct cost of the program,” Shamblin said. “And with the uncertainty of the economy and the budget, we just didn’t think it would be prudent to move it forward at this time.” Shamblin first proposed the day camp in March, and council has given it two readings thus far. He said his proposal for the program came after noticing a need to have a summer day camp that could

Reynoldsburg police have filed felony theft charges against former Reynoldsburg Soccer Association club director and treasurer Tim Thompson. Police detective Jeff Gammell said Thompson has been charged with taking more than $5,000 from the club. If he is convicted of the fourth-degree felony, he could face six to 18 months in prison. Gammell said the charges were filed with the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office on April 27. The case is expected to go before a grand jury sometime in May, he said. Lt. James O’Neill said Thompson hasn’t been arrested, adding that police would wait for an indictment. “Anytime we get a felony, we can either arrest the person, put a warrant out for them or do a direct indictment, where we can prepare the case and get it down to the prosecutor’s office and straight to a grand jury,” Gammell said. “That works well in a lot of theft and forgery cases. People are more willing to talk to you to if they know they’re not going to be arrested.” Police began investigating the case in June 2010, after receiving reports that thousands of dollars had been stolen from the club over the past few years. Gammell said the investigation has taken so long to put together because he wanted to look at all records and information available over the past several years in an effort to make the case strong. He said Matt Knorr, director of coaching for the soccer club, first See THEFT, page A2
