Capital-Style.com Winter/Spring 2012

fter her quick weekend getaway, a good friend of mine scheduled an impromptu Sunday brunch. She was cryptic and short about it. Something was up. I knew she was engaged from the moment I saw her smile. I squealed like a 12-year-old at a Justin Bieber concert and impatiently sat waiting for the rest of our friends to arrive so she could recount the proposal. We congratulated her fiancé on his taste in rings, and then interrogated him about his nerves. It was a celebratory morning; a feeling I wished for their sake would last a while as they shared the news with others. We all know what soon follows the ring: lots of questions. When are you getting married? Who’s doing your flowers? What does your dress look like? The onset of inquiries can create urgency in brides to have the answers right away. It can quickly shift the mood from “Congratulations!” to “That’s great, but…” Now, two short weeks

after our brunch, my friend is already knee-deep in planning—booking venues, photographers, florists and DJs. The process can be overwhelming, especially because most brides are first-time customers who can’t always depend on experience to pick a reliable vendor. Knowing this, my friend hasn’t stopped asking others for references. It’s the advice wedding pros have repeatedly given us over the past several months of interviews: start with good recommendations. Our goal, then, while planning this issue was simple—to serve as a reliable and inspirable friend to help you through what should be a fun and exciting process. In “Plan Like a Pro” we gathered great advice from area wedding pros to create a checklist of what to do and when for a seamless wedding day. In “Bridal Bliss” we staged three different weddings— each with its own vibe—to offer inspiration. We show ways to transition your look from the ceremony to reception without changing your

dress. And we follow each wedding with an inspiration board for, you guessed it, even more ideas. Plus, there are dazzling rings for the bride and groom, easy ways to add color to your bridal party and a slew of amazing real Columbus weddings. And because we can’t stress relaxation enough, we’ve got a list of luxe spa treatments that will ease your stress and ensure you look your best on the big day. I know I’ll be handing a copy of this to my friend as soon as it’s off the presses. I hope she—and you—can take advantage of our leg work to plan with greater ease and enjoy this time. You deserve it!

efore making a single call, figure out two things: the guest list and your budget. Both impact nearly all the decisions you make. Next, jot down things that are important to you, suggested Jo Panarello, of Panarello Consulting in Columbus. That includes things you like and those you don’t. “You may not know exactly what you want, but you know what you don’t want,” she said. Make a priority list. For example, have you always dreamt of having tons of flowers or a band instead of a DJ? List your nonnegotiable details and start there. Wedding Planner Venue Caterer Entertainment Photographer

Meet with two or three vendors in each category, recommended Panarello, and set meetings within a day or two of each other. That way your impressions will be fresh in your mind and you can better compare, she said.

Find a wedding planner you click with, advised Worthington wedding planner Emilie Duncan. “You have to trust and like your planner,” she said. If you have major vendors already booked, ask them which planners they like to work with. “They see the other side,” she said.

20

Think space when picking a venue. “I love

Look at a photographer’s website to get a feel for

space. Guests love space. The serving staff loves space. Always make sure the space can accommodate the numbers you’re going to have,” Panarello said. She also likes a pre-function area—one separate from the main reception area where guests can enjoy a cocktail and conversation.

his or her style, and view multiple albums. Photos should vary from wedding to wedding, and that includes poses and locations, said Columbus photographer Simon Yao. “My goal is to create a work of art for my clients. I don’t treat them cookie cutter,” he said. And meet them in person. “It’s who you feel comfortable with,” he added.

If the hall doesn’t have a caterer, put that next on the list. Look at menus as a starting point. If you don’t want a cookie-cutter meal, look for a caterer with a variety of options. “A vendor should direct the client. They should be able to take your information and specialize it for you,” Panarello said.

months checklist 4 Gown 4 Flowers 4 Bridal Party

Choose a gown now, said Kristin Cooke of Big Rock Little Rooster in the Short North, to allow time for the gown to arrive (which can take four to six months). “Some brides believe they shouldn’t make a decision until they try on 50 gowns,” she said. “It is OK to stop when you love a gown. You may not have the sunbeam and angel moment. It may just be ‘Wow, I like how I look and this is how I want to look for my groom on my wedding day.’ ” Your dress may also help determine the feel of your entire wedding. “I feel like it sets the tone for the whole look,” said Courtney Leister of the Arena District’s Girls in White Dresses. “If it’s lace, maybe you want to see lace overlay on invites or the cake.”

Before you start on flowers, there are a few things you need to have done. “One thing that we run into are brides who don’t have a venue, dress or colors,” said Katie Rodgers of Bloomtastic in Upper Arlington. “And it’s not a lot for us to work with.” Bring a picture of your wedding gown and color swatches. There are dozens of shades of purple, Rodgers points out, so bring examples. Don’t have a color swatch of fabric? Go to the hardware store and grab a paint swatch. Also, “don’t just think about colors, look at patterns you like, too,” said Dee Conrad, of Petals & Leaves in Powell. And come with a budget in mind, but willingness to be flexible. It’s the number one thing local florists agree on—that many brides are uneducated when it comes to the cost of flowers. Many publications will tell you to reserve 10 percent of your budget, but often that isn’t enough, Conrad said.

Now’s the time to ask your bridal party to be in the wedding, recommends wedding planner Adrianne Mellen Ramstack of Adrianne Elizabeth LLC in German Village. Then, ask the readers and others involved in the ceremony soon after. “You want them to feel special and not like an afterthought,” she said.

colors, swatches, invitations. Even a picture of your dress. All those elements can show a cake designer what your wedding feels like. And let the bakery know what you want to try. Many bakeries do standard flavor tasting, but if there’s something special you want, speak up before the appointment. (There may be a charge for that.) “It’s also worth asking if the bakery does group tastings. That way you may get more flavors than normal,” Koivisto said.

For invitations and savethe-date designs, bring color Choose a bakery eight or nine months out, especially if booking during busy season, said Katie Koivisto of The Cake Studio in Powell. “Try two or three bakers, and then decide,” she recommended. On your appointment, bring anything you can—wedding

swatches and samples from your florist, suggested Maegan Richards of Paper Occasions in Dublin. The save-the-date invites are a great place to put a wedding website, added Ramstack. “If you have it, then push people to it to look for updates,” she said.

Don’t feel the bridesmaid dresses need to replicate your wedding gown. “I don’t like matchy-matchy,” said Leister from Girls in White Dresses. “The bride should be a different cut than the bridesmaids.” The two looks should complement, but don’t need to mirror each other. Attendants should place the order within the same week of each other, Cooke advised. This guarantees dresses are from the same dye lots.

Save-the-dates Invitatations Accessories Rehearsal Dinner

Drop your save-thedates in the mail, and start working on invites (these should be ordered with four months to go). Consider showing the invite to both families before it’s finalized, suggested Michelle Honer of Paper Occasions, to be sure you haven’t left anyone off or spelled anything wrong. Include directions to the ceremony and reception, things to do nearby if there’s a long time between the two, and details for any extras, such as a Sunday brunch.

getting lost in the holiday card shuffle. “Either send invites a little before or after, so it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle,” Ramstack said.

You have entered what most industry professionals call “the wedding lull.” You’ve done all the heavy lifting. Your major responsibility now is to take care of the small stuff—and try not to change anything.

Is your dress in? If so, Leister said, finalize your veil and jewelry. These also may take time to order. But you’ll want to wait until the dress is in hand to make sure you match the way you want.

Start solidifying the plan for the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. Think about who’s invited. If travel is involved, many will need to know this information to make arrangements.

22

Take care of details that are bride and groom specific: music and readings for the ceremony; greeters; and reception music. It’s a great time to look into tuxedo rentals, too.

Capital-Style.com Winter/Spring 2012

Think about what you want people to remember, added Ramstack. Everyone has food. Everyone has drinks. But what personal touches can you add? This fine-tuning should happen during the lull, Ramstack said—both the concept and execution. Do you want handwritten notes as place cards, for example? “Hone in on those special details, and then execute them,” she said.

3

months checklist 4 Alterations 4 Bridal Party Gifts Schedule your first round of alterations. Remember you’ll need your shoes for

this fitting. And remind bridesmaids to at least make an appointment for their alterations, Cooke said. “The reason why a three-month window works is because, if they are good, they are probably doing other gowns as well,” Cooke said.

Choose gifts early. “A lot of times, brides want to gift the same necklace and earrings so they’ll all look special. Those can take up to a month to order,” Cooke said. “It’s nice when everything is done before the one-month countdown. So then all you are doing is reviewing checklists.”

months checklist 4 Wedding Bands 4 License 4 Mail Invitations

Pick wedding bands about six weeks before your wedding, recommended Mike Cress, of Denig Jewelers in Worthington. “Give yourself at least a month. That way you’ve got time to make adjustments when the rings come in,” he said, explaining some can take seven to 10 days to order.

Suri of Joie de Vivre Events. The other thing you should wait to do? Change your last name. “Wait until you get back from your honeymoon,” Suri recommended. New documents, such as passports and credit cards, can take a while to replace.

Send invites. “I like people to RSVP a month in advance of the wedding,” Ramstack said. That means at two months prior, invites must be in guests’ mailboxes. But don’t shoot for much earlier than that, she warned: if you give people too much time to respond, they tend to forget.

Helpful Hint: Before the invites go out, group guests into eights or 10s that could become dinner tables once the RSVPs come in.

1

Get your wedding license. In Franklin County, a license is only good for 60 days, so wait until about two months beforehand, said Sabrina

month checklist 4 Finalize the Details Plan your final fitting a month before your wedding, but don’t go much before six weeks out, Duncan suggested. “Your weight goes up and down. Stress does really funny things,” she said.

Meet with you stationer to finalize programs, menus, table design and place cards. But two months out the design should be complete. “That way, all the bride has to do when we finalize it, is send us an Excel spreadsheet,” Richards said.

24

Capital-Style.com Winter/Spring 2012

Start communicating with key people in your wedding: bridal party, those speaking at the ceremony, reception or rehearsal dinner. Are you doing a mani-pedi night for the bridesmaids? Let them know now so they can plan. “And then they’re not bugging you. They know the plan and they are ready,” Ramstack said.

Count RSVPs. And always err on the lighter side, Panarello recommended. For example, if you know you’ll have somewhere between 20 and 22 tables, estimate for 20. You can always add, but it’s more difficult to take away.

2

Head to your venue for a final walkthrough. With you should be the caterer, venue contact and florist.

Enjoy! “Have everything crossed off your list one week prior. That way you can relax and enjoy your wedding week, and there is nothing more special than that,” Ramstack said. The same goes for the groom, she added, as his only responsibility that week should be to pick up his tux. Anything that’s left: delegate.

E

Story by: Beth Stallings

ngagement pictures are like a dress rehearsal for the big day. Couples can get comfortable in front of the camera, and photographers get to know their best looks. “It’s about learning people’s natural laugh, and differentiating between what’s polite and what’s real,” said Benjamin Derkin of Derk’s Works Photography in Columbus. Plus, it offers couples a chance to snap a few less-formal shots before their wedding day. But where to do it? Local photographers offer five ideas

32

(and a few favorite spots) to help yield a great engagement shot.

1. Give it Meaning

Think of places that hold a special memory—your first date, where you got engaged or a usual hangout, such as a park, concert venue or even your neighborhood. “I want them to be emotionally involved in their pictures,” Derkin said. Picking a familiar spot, he added, creates a level of comfort—key when many tend to feel awkward being photographed.

Capital-Style.com Winter/Spring 2012

Snapshot: Consider incorporating props if you don’t have a special setting, suggested Columbus and Miami photographer Amanda Julca. For example, one couple—a photographer and musician—brought an old-fashioned camera for the bride and a guitar for the groom.

2. Create Interest

If there is no one spot that means something to you (or one that will photograph well), think about places that just look cool. “I like to pick visually interesting places,” said German Village photographer Jacquelyn Poussot. Snapshot: Try St. Charles

Preparatory School on East Broad Street with its unique architecture, or the Union Station Arch in the Arena District. For a different view of the Short North, Powell photographer Nicole Dixon heads to an orange wall with a bright turquoise door on West Poplar Avenue.

3. Get Active

Feeling a bit camera shy? Try planning a small activity or pick a lively location to keep your mind off of the lens. Grab ice cream, set up a picnic or pop a bottle of bubbly. Julca took one fun, but nervous, couple to the Ohio State Fair. “It let them have fun and play around so they wouldn’t feel as uncomfortable,” Julca said.

4. Think Ahead

Poussot had one couple bring a chalkboard to write their wedding date on, and they then used the images as a save-the-date card. “Finding an extra purpose makes it higher value,” Poussot explained. Another couple printed images from their engagement shoot on the back of place cards for an extra personal touch at the reception. Snapshot: Consider coordinating with your invites so the look of your shoot matches your stationary, Poussot said. For example, try using a piece of foam core to recreate a design image from your invite.

5. Theme It

Still at a loss for a location? Refer to the theme of your wedding. Is it a garden ceremony? Is it urban? Or rustic? Then consider a spot that will fit that feel. “A couple’s whole wedding is based around a style,” Julca said. “Sometimes what works is to think about the style of their wedding and carry that through.” Snapshot: For an urban vibe, try outside The Buggyworks, a simple setting with an old warehouse feel. For garden, head to Inniswood Metro Gardens or the Franklin Park Conservatory. Give it country flair at Bryn Du Mansion in Granville, which offers a barn on the grounds and occasional polo matches on weekends.

Snapshot: Poussot heads to Yellow Springs, Ohio, about an hour out of town, for its charm. There’s a huge sunflower field she’ll have couples play around in, and then after stop by Young’s Dairy for an old-fashioned ice cream cone.

dress it up You’ve got the setting, now get the look Coordinate

The bride and groom should complement each other, but that doesn’t mean matchy matchy, said photographer Jacquelyn Poussot. Pick colors and patterns that work together, and dress as if you are attending the same party. Brides shouldn’t wear cocktail attire with grooms in a T-shirt and shorts.

Contrast

“Don’t be afraid to contrast your environment,” Poussot said. It’s OK to look a bit out of place (with the setting, not each other), so wear that suit on a farm or a cocktail dress against a grungy brick wall.

Color

Pick neutrals, recommended photographer Amanda Julca, and try to avoid black and white, which don’t always show up well in photos. Go for grey, beige or pale shades of color. And think timeless. “You don’t want to look back at your clothes 20 years from now and wonder, “What was I thinking?’ ” Julca added.

Complement

Brides should dress more on the feminine side. “Think about your figure and aim to accent the narrowest part of your body,” Poussot said. “And stay in your style. Don’t do anything that doesn’t feel like you.”

Guide to Gorgeous Yes, it takes a lot of planning to look as good as you will. Here’s how to pull it off Story by: Heather Weekley & Beth Stallings

Big Picture Be yourself: Your hair and makeup look should simply be a more polished version of you. “Don’t venture off too far from you,” said Genevieve Francia, hair training department coordinator for The Charles Penzone Family of Salons. “You want to look back at the pictures and say ‘I look pretty. I look like myself.’ ”

Hair Practice makes perfect:

Wear your practice hairstyle for an entire day. “This lets you see if you like the way it feels, and if it holds well,” Francia said. Also, consider taking pictures of your hairstyle with your wedding dress on to see if you like the overall look. Plan on scheduling the dry-run appointment up to two months before the big day, Francia recommended, to allow time for changes if necessary.

skin tone mirrors yours. “A good makeup artist understands applying makeup that is flawless for photography purposes, but still being able to make you look natural,” she said.

Waxing Know your body: Discuss hair removal options with your stylist far in advance, suggested Spa at River Ridge Manager Rhonda Dant. From simple procedures such as brows and lips to more-intense bikini or Brazilian waxes, try each well in advance to know how your body will react.

Lashes Go glam: “We’ve found a

lot of brides think ahead and start extreme lashes,” said Jena Skowronski of The Charles Penzone Salons. This is a semi-permanent eyelash extension, applied lash-by-lash, that naturally wears off with your eyelashes.

Brides gravitate toward Shellac, a hybrid between a nail polish and gel, said manager Rhonda Dant. “You don’t have to worry about chipping,” she said. “You’re good to go as soon as you get out of the chair.” Color is secured with UV lights and will last up to 14 days— plenty of time to make it through the honeymoon. For Shellac plus extra massaging and callus work, upgrade to the Bliss Pedicure.

“It’s a microdermabrasion that vibrates the dead skin off the face and neck,” said Erika Taylor, owner of Erika Taylor Urban Spa. Expect about three treatments to get skin looking firmer and toner. But it is gentle enough to have done the day before your wedding. “A lot of brides are opting for that. They completely love it,” Taylor said. “And age doesn’t matter. It cleans the skin and prepares it for makeup.”

This includes seven treatments that span the month before the big day. A few weeks out, the bride gets the Woodhouse Escape massage, followed by a facial. One week out, she enjoys another facial and aroma bath ritual with massage. The day before, she gets a mani, pedi and makeup application. “The products we use are antioxidant rich and leave the bride refreshed and rejuvenated,” said owner Alan Reuter.

hoosing a wedding dress is more than simply falling in love with the look of a gown—it’s falling in love with a feel and using your dress to set the tone of your wedding day. “I always ask brides for

three adjectives that describe the aura they want,” said Kristin Cooke, manager of Big Rock Little Rooster in the Short North. “For example, a bride asking for glamorous, sophisticated and chic may feel best in a sleek, structured fabric. With that picture painted, we can guide them

toward a look.” Vintage, glamour and country are the three most frequently heard adjectives by bridal experts in the Columbus wedding scene. Lucky for local brides, designers are following suit with looks that fit the feel they want to capture.

glamour Picture Hollywood-style red carpet glitz. Fitted silhouettes, one-shoulder cuts and heavier silks and satins all can contribute to the luxurious feel.

l Skip the heavy, layered gown. Embrace lighter fabrics such as silk and lace, which bridal experts say are popular in today’s style. l Most brides are currently opting for ivory or champagne instead of stark white gowns. The darker shades of off-white colors pair well with different textures like chiffon, satin and tulle. l Looking for a veil alternative? Try a birdcage. You can even start with a traditional veil for the ceremony and swap it for a birdcage during the reception for a fashion-forward look.

Photos by: Will Shilling

ennifer Rose Diehl was planning her own 2010 wedding when the idea to make a bouquet from vintage brooches hit her. “I knew that I wanted something different than fresh flowers,” she said. “I wanted something that would last forever.” Others were dazzled. And within months, country star Miranda Lambert was carrying a Diehl creation down the aisle. Now, Diehl is thrilling brides nationwide, and she’s left her corporate job to run her bouquet business, The Ritzy Rose, fulltime. The Ritzy Rose creates custom brooch bouquets. Each, Diehl says, is a reflection of the woman who will carry it, handmade with hundreds of baubles and beads, family heirlooms and flea market finds. A single bouquet can take months to create, and costs between $275 and $675. The special touch for one of Diehl’s brides, for example, was the counter her umpire grandfather held in his hands for years. “It meant so much to have it in my bouquet—that and the special brooches that my husband’s five aunts sent from Italy,” said

Jess Savaggio of Houston. Savaggio loved Diel’s creation so much that she took it to the Vatican to be blessed. But it wasn’t divine intervention that led her to this Columbus designer: It was an article in Us Weekly featuring Lambert’s bouquet. “From the moment that happened, it has all been a whirlwind,” Diehl said. “Miranda threw a shower, and all of her friends and family collected pieces and gave her one for the bouquet.” That publicity, along with articles in Vogue, InStyle and Elle, have clients calling from around the world. With an impressive design background, the New York

City girl was wooed to Central Ohio in 2005 for a job with Abercrombie & Fitch. Three years later, Limited Brands was calling. Diehl left her job at Bath and Body Works to devote all of her attention to her company. “It was a little scary,” she said. Now, though, she has created 60 bouquets, and has orders for more than twice that. “I have so many orders I just can’t keep up,” she said. The Ritzy Rose is a labor of love for Diehl and her husband, Jason. She’s color and texture. He’s facts and figures. But most weekends, you can find the couple together at a flea market or garage sales, searching for antique pieces that bring the bouquets to life. Diehl can’t say for sure where her appreciation for preserving the past came from. What she does know, however, is that the future is bright. Up next? Boutonnieres. “We,” she said, “want to create something just as meaningful for men.” For more, visit TheRitzyRose. com. Watch Andrea Cambern’s “Female Focus” weekdays at 5 p.m. on 10TV News HD. Punch it up Five ways to add a touch of color with class Story by: Heather weekley

L

ast year’s weddings had Courtney Leister seeing purple—lots of it. But now, said the owner of Girls in White Dresses in the Arena District, it’s given way to neutrals like mocha, navy and black. But while such classic shades can give bridal parties a sophisticated, timeless look, they can also leave the feeling that something is missing. A nice touch? Adding a single splash of mood-creating color. “It allows the bride to bring in some modern pops of color that will not overshadow the entire day—or pictures 10 years later,” Leister said. Here’s how experts say to do it right.

Metallics

sashes

Metallics are a fun way to enhance a neutral dress. “Add a brooch to a dress, or sash for that touch of glitter,” Leister recommended. Shoes are another place to bring in the glitz.

Adding a ribbon around the waist of a simple gown is an easy way to add color, said Lil Stalnaker of Wendy’s Bridal in Dublin. Kathy Kruse, owner of Trumpington Bridal House in Westerville, has seen brides create custom sashes with a color that matches their wedding-day accents.

feathers Feathers can be used in hair styles or bouquets. Try a small feather in your hair to draw the eye upward, suggested Wafa Laban of Elegant Bride in Dublin. Peacock feathers provide rich blue and green hues that stand out against a black or gray dress.

48

jewelry A necklace, earrings or ring can add a dash of color. But skip the bracelets, Kruse suggested, as they can sometimes snag dresses.

Capital-Style.com Winter/Spring 2012

Makeup Ready to give that bold lip trend a try? “You can definitely bring in color with makeup, like lipstick or eye shadow,” Leister explained. Or, have your bridesmaids rock the same fingernail or toenail polish for a uniform look.

The Big Day When tweaking your makeup for the reception, “The easiest thing to transition are your lips—go soft for the ceremony and bold for the reception.” Jade Piatt, Charles Penzone Salons

For flowers, “Sophisticated can be simple, straight lines or lush and overflowing. There’s a lot of elegance in simplicity.” Jan Reese, Flowers on Orchard Lane

To transition your hairstyle from ceremony to wedding, start with a loose updo. “If using a structured, classic style, it’s not easy from up to down.” Kat Sasfy, Charles Penzone Salons

Keep invite colors minimal. “It doesn’t have to be black and white, it can be peach and grey. But it should be clean.” Less is more when it comes to crafting an elegant cake. Think neutral colors, such as taupe and white, and similarly sized tiers.

Go big with small touches, such as adding a vintage brooch for a family-heirloom effect.

Little Miss Sunshine

Don’t let a little rain spoil your wedding day (we didn’t!)—add a punch of color with a bright umbrella or a rain boot.

Sweet Treat

Splitting tiers into standalone cakes adds an element of fun to this rustic affair. It’s all about keeping dessert approachable, said baker Amanda Ellis, who added exterior details to hint at what’s inside.

ate laughs as she recalls where she met her husband Matt: at a bar in the Arena District. Kate, a business and fashion manager for a local photographer, refused to give Matt, who’s in marketing, her phone number. “I told him, if you really want it, you’ll remember my name and you’ll find me,” she recalled. He found her the next day on Facebook and asked her out every week for two months until she finally said yes. The couple weathered Matt’s battle with multiple myeloma, and he is currently in remission. They married on Sept. 24, 2011. “We really wanted our wedding to be a celebration of life,” Kate said. K

leo, a merchandise planner, used her wedding gown to set the tone for her Oct. 16, 2010 wedding to Jonathan, an attorney. Playing off her black sash, everything was black and white with touches of purple to accentuate a modern romantic rooftop wedding she said perfectly fit their style. “The whole day was flawless,” Kleo said. Their macaroon wedding favors were a honeymoon hint from Jonathan—he planned their trip to Paris as a surprise to Kleo, who had always wanted to travel there.

Donna & Jason Federspiel

D

onna, a freelance photographer, and Jason, a radiologist, met at work six years ago. “We were friends and just kind of fell in love with each other over our favorite things, which are food and wine and travel,” she said. So it was only fitting that their intimate and festive July 29, 2011 wedding was inspired by the things that brought them together. “We designed the whole thing based on how we like to live,” said Donna, a Westerville native. Heavy hors d’oeuvre tables carried a his-and-her theme, with everything fried on one table (hush puppies and fried chicken as a nod to Jason’s southern roots) and Mediterranean-style fare on the other (for Donna). They added a raw bar for fun, their favorite wines, his-and-her signature cocktails, and a dessert bar with cupcakes flavored in bourbon chocolate (for Jason) and champagne belini (for Donna), among other sweets. “We wanted people to say, ‘Oh, this is totally them,’ ” Donna said.

Kristin & Kenneth Pietsch

COMFORTABLE, PERSONAL AND ALL ABOUT YOU.

K

ristin did not expect to be called in on her day off for a mandatory meeting at the corporate wellness company she works for. She also didn’t expect to find Kenneth, an insurance underwriter, waiting for her instead of her coworkers, ready to propose. “My coworkers were in on it,” Kristin recalled. “My parents were hiding in another room with a sea of our friends.” The couple, who maintain a long-distance relationship between Columbus and Chicago, were married on Aug. 6, 2011. The wedding, Kristin hoped, was classic and romantic. “I wanted that old-fashioned feeling,” she said. Along with that, she obeyed a classic bridal tradition of something old, using her grandmother’s earrings as a brooch on her bouquet.

Jackie & Tim Ackerman

A

Valentine’s Day snowstorm in Chicago nearly derailed Tim’s proposal plans. Quick thinking forced the North Campus-area bartender to switch from a fountain near the site of Lollapalooza—a music festival the two attended together—to the art museum. It was just as special, said Jackie, as both art and music play a big part in their relationship. Their May 21, 2011 wedding was sprinkled with personal touches that proved that: tables named after favorite festivals and concert venues, concert ticket seating cards and a ceremony hosted by a mutual friend who read notes written on the Beatles “The White Album.” Another special element? A flower Jackie wore in her hair that was made of lace from her mother’s wedding dress. “I wanted my big, girly, classy wedding,” Jackie said. “We knew we wanted an outdoor wedding, but not a garden wedding. We wanted it modern and that’s why we chose COSI. I loved that we could see the city skyline.”

Laura & Adeel Khan

“I

’m definitely a nontraditional kind of girl,” said Laura, a buyer for American Eagle, who married Adeel, a dentist, on July 23, 2010. Laura wanted to create an air of whimsy for their Franklin Park Conservatory wedding. “I am a really crafty person and love the colors of yellow,” Laura said. The yellow balloons in their wedding photos were last-minute accessories that Laura bought two days before the wedding. “Looking at Style Me Pretty and other inspiration boards, there are always so many good photo ops with something unpredictable,” she recalled. “So I got two giant yellow balloons.” The couple, who met at Ohio State, also wanted to show their love for Columbus, so guests enjoyed Jeni’s Ice Cream and an appearance by the OSU alumni band.

L

auren, who works in the development office of an all-girls school, remembers every moment of her classic Columbus wedding to financial analyst Matthew on July 9, 2011. “A lot of times, people say, ‘I don’t remember my wedding day, it went by so fast,’ ” she said. “But it really felt like we could enjoy the whole day.” The couple, who live in New York City, knew Columbus wasn’t a home base for many of their guests. So they wanted to make the wedding worth the trip. They made the event blacktie optional to give guests a chance to dress up. “We loved the look of everyone being so dressed up. It added to the feel of making it be so special,” Lauren said. But perhaps the biggest hit of the night came at the end. Lauren’s father put together a scotch and cigar bar on the croquette court as a post-reception gathering. “I think that was the real hit of the evening,” Lauren laughed.

essica felt something for Seth right from the start. “I knew he was different,” Jessica said, recalling how she felt their first weeks of dating. “I think it was pretty instant.” The couple, who both work for Big Lots, were married May 14, 2011 at the Ohio Statehouse. It was the perfect location, Jessica said, because it gave them a sophisticated setting to host a ceremony (Seth is Jewish and Jessica is Lutheran, so a standard religious location was out), as well as space for a large reception. And although everything that day was perfect—from the wow-worthy flowers to the mini-tiramisu cake she had made for Seth—nothing trumped the first moment they saw each other. “It was so special,” Jessica said. “He’s not really an emotional guy, but he was crying like a baby.”

uring a trip to Spain, Kevin, a creative director, proposed in Spanish to Alexandra, who owns a public relations business, in a 16thcentury park in Madrid. That explains the reasons behind several Spanish nuances during their June 4, 2011 wedding, such as a flamenco guitarist during the ceremony. And it wasn’t until she walked down the aisle that Kevin discovered his soon-to-be wife was wearing her favorite color, red. “It was pretty funny when I walked into the room,” Alexandra recalled. “He loved it. He’s still talking about it.” Another non-traditional but personal touch was the couple’s gift registry. They wanted to create a celebration of love—for each other, their family and friends, as well as the community. So the couple registered with local charities instead of for gifts, asking guests to make donations. In all, their wedding raised more than $5,000 for others. “We wanted to share our love for our community,” Alexandra said. “And we felt that registering with charities was a great way to do that.”
