Shoot for the Stars
Your wedding should be everything you’ve been dreaming of. With BTTS Events, the sky’s the limit for your biggest, boldest wedding dreams—because they’re Bigger Than the Sky.
BY MANDY SHUNNARAH
Wedding trends may come and go, but one thing stays the same: Couples want a day that’s uniquely them with as little stress as possible to celebrate their love. And that’s what BTTS Events knows best.
Founded in 1998 by Joy and John S. Brooks, the wedding and events company––which also includes the catering company Gourmet Fresh, the flower purveyor Fiori Florals, and eight venues––is now helmed by the next generation: their son, John A. Brooks. Like his parents before him, the younger Brooks is dedicated to continuing the legacy his mother began with a new, family-inspired company name.
“I remembered an old family saying that my grandfather used to say to us, which is that he loved us bigger than the sky,” Brooks says. “So I said, ‘What if we called it BTTS and made it an encouragement to our employees about how typically the only limits are the ones we put on ourselves, so the sky’s the limit?’”
The name is fitting, especially given how BTTS has differentiated itself in the marketplace. With venues throughout Central Ohio in various sizes and aesthetics, as well as inclusive services to make decision-making easier for couples while still offering highly customizable packages, it’s easy to understand why BTTS stays busy serving area couples.
“This year, we’re on track for over 700 weddings,” Brooks says. “We had 19 weddings in one weekend in September alone and served 12,638 guests.”
With so many weddings under its belt, BTTS has found what works well and what alleviates wedding stress for couples already tasked with making hundreds or thousands of decisions: a full-service, all-inclusive wedding experience that still leaves plenty of room for special touches to showcase each couple’s unique love story. BTTS takes care of nearly everything having to do with planning a wedding, including the cake and bar beverages, on top of the florals, linens, and DJ, so couples can focus on
what matters most: each other.
“You’re working with a number of vendors who have already been vetted, so you know they’re outstanding. It’s also a big time saver and stress reliever,” says Brooks. “But even within being full-service and all-inclusive, there are thousands of options that a client still has, so you get the peace of mind with the five-star service, but also the flexibility of making the event exactly what you want it to be.”
“Everything is fully customizable: your cake design, the menu options with the caterer and more,” adds Heather Vincent, director of marketing at BTTS Events, who has more than 15 years of experience in the wedding industry and cut her teeth working for a high-end wedding planner before finding BTTS. “What’s great is that all the vendors know how to work with each other seamlessly. It’s not like a DJ who’s coming into a new venue that’s never worked with this caterer and doesn’t know what’s next in the run-ofshow… We provide 70-plus options in linen colors, and we know the best location for the DJ to set up and the best locations for photos. All these things run smoothly because everyone knows how to operate with each other.”
Vincent joined BTTS at a time of big growth and change for the company, which has expanded the opportunity for BTTS to serve even more couples planning their best day ever. BTTS acquired its first venue, Brookshire in Lewis Center, in 2006, when the younger Brooks joined the company. Then, in 2017, it added The Estate at New Albany and Lakeview at WatersEdge in Hilliard. Since Vincent joined the company in 2020, the venue side has doubled to now include The Cove at WatersEdge in Hilliard, The Ellis in Columbus’ Italian Village neighborhood, Darby House in Galloway, Vue Columbus in the Brewery District downtown and The FIG Room in the Short North.
“We always want to make sure it’s a
building or opportunity that’s differentiated in the marketplace with characteristics and aesthetics. We guarantee our clients will receive the same five-star service regardless of the location,” Brooks says.
Each venue has a different vibe, and many have both indoor and outdoor areas, so there’s something for everyone.
“Brookshire and Darby House are both secluded with wooded areas, with Brookshire a bit more on the modern side. We have a courtyard, a wooded path, pasture areas, and a lot of modern elements like the ballroom doors,” Vincent says. “WatersEdge is a single building with a venue on each side, and the Lakeview side brings that cozy vibe. There’s a grand fireplace in the center of the ballroom.” Brooks likened the space
PHOTO
to a ski lodge. Meanwhile, the Cove side of WatersEdge offers a different experience.
“It has that midcentury modern aesthetic with marble epoxy floors, a sleek statement bar, and a fireplace lounge area,” Vincent adds. “WatersEdge is one building that offers completely different aesthetics on opposite sides, but the whole of the backside of the building is wrapped around by this beautiful lake.”
The Estate at New Albany features simple, modern decor on luxurious architectural elements. The venue sits on 3.5 acres of land that backs up to a nature preserve, giving it a secluded, wooded vibe. Combined with the upscale decor and neutral palette that couples can easily make their own, it “has that modern, neutral feel. You walk in, and it has
Brookshire Event Venue
The Ellis
a grand foyer with a beautiful fireplace, vaulted ceilings and lots of natural lighting,” Vincent says.
Moving toward downtown Columbus, The Ellis is a historic building BTTS has transformed into a beautiful open space that Vincent calls the most unique venue of them all.
“It’s industrial modern with a beautiful bar feature, a wood-sided wall on one side of the room with neon signs, then also on the other side is a wood-sided wall with moss. It’s modern and historic, all in one building. It’s definitely a passion project and one of my favorites,” Vincent says.
Refined industrial is a hallmark of BTTS’ downtown venues.
The FIG Room is the most intimate and industrial chic of the venues with big windows that draw natural light, exposed brick walls and refurbished concrete floors. It works best for small weddings or gatherings with guests before or after the big day.
For industrial chic with room for more loved ones, head further downtown to the Vue in the Brewery District.
“The Vue speaks to more of that urban, exposed ceiling feel, but we’ve added a bit more refinedness. And two suites so our clients have getting-ready space,” says Vincent. “Both The Ellis and
Fiori Florals
The Estate at New Albany
The Vue have outdoor ceremony spots, so you can have moments like that, and you can also have the cocktail hour that allows guests to have that outdoor experience.”
BTTS’ venues in historic buildings aren’t limited to those in downtown Columbus. The Darby House has the most storied history of all the properties.
Situated on a 1,200-acre horse farm owned by a competitive horse racing family, Darby House on Darby Dan Farm rests along the banks of Big Darby Creek and offers total privacy.
The Galbreath family built the estate in 1954 to train and keep the horses they entered in races around the world. The on-site trophy room speaks to the family’s dedication to the sport, which they continue now from a farm in Kentucky, thus paving the way for Darby House to become a wedding venue as legendary as its creators.
“The long drive down the tree-lined driveway to get to the property is beautiful, especially in the fall when it looks like the trees are set on fire. You can’t hear highway traffic at the house. It’s definitely one of those lodges that feels like private elegance,” Vincent says.
“You feel like you’re in Savannah, Georgia, or a Kentucky estate,” Brooks adds. “It even has bison!”
When Ziyue Wang and Hannah Tsai were planning their wedding, they chose BTTS’ original venue: Brookshire Event Venue. (See their wedding on Page 29.)
“Brookshire was actually the first venue we toured, but we kept going back because they set such a good standard, and they had everything we wanted and needed,” Tsai shares.
The couple met when they were in high school but didn’t start dating until after they reconnected at Ohio State University, and both assisted with the wedding of some mutual friends, with Wang as emcee and Tsai doing the bridesmaids’ hair and makeup. For their own special day, the couple had a traditional Taiwanese tea ceremony at the home of a family friend, where the couple served tea to their parents, grandparents and other close relatives as a way of merging their families and thanking them for inspiring the couple to become the people they are today. Following the ceremony, they headed to Brookshire for the official exchange of vows.
“I was looking for an all-inclusive
venue specifically because with both our careers, it would streamline things so much,” Tsai says, noting that she’s in dental school and Wang is in his final year of medical school residency. “At first, I worried, ‘What if I don’t like their vendors?’ but I think BTTS has done such a great job. All of their vendors are genuinely amazing, and I don’t think I could’ve chosen better for myself—and I can be a little picky. They assured me that if we didn’t like a certain vendor, I could always switch them out with another. Having that flexibility was so helpful.”
“Ultimately, Brookshire and their team stood out because the venue was beautiful, and the team seemed to be very comprehensive and professional,” Wang says. “There was no feeling of we’re just another wedding on another weekend. We’re so thankful that none of it felt commercialized. Everything felt personal. It was incredibly easy, and we’re very thankful.”
Whatever you choose, you can shoot for the stars with your wedding, and BTTS Events will make it happen. After all, they’re Bigger Than the Sky. «

Make a Difference with Your Wedding
When you plan your special day, you can give back to your community and causes you care about in a number of surprising ways. Find out how BTTS is leading the local wedding industry in giving back.
BY MANDY SHUNNARAH
When you book your wedding with BTTS Events, you’re not only putting the logistics of your best day ever in some of the region’s most capable hands, but you’re also giving back to your community. Philanthropy is baked into BTTS in creative ways, starting with its food and floral rescue program.
“In the events and catering business, you never want to run out of food, but we always had a heart to do something with the food that was left over after our events,” says John A. Brooks, CEO. “We found Columbus Food Rescue, which is part of Local Matters [a nonprofit that aids in food education, access and advocacy], and they help facilitate taking the food left over from our events to a variety of locations throughout Central Ohio. They’re our connection with
homeless shelters, senior living centers, veterans homes and more.”
To date, BTTS has donated over 50,000 meals.
With the success of the food rescue program, BTTS wanted to do the same with leftover florals, so Local Matters now helps deliver the flowers to senior living facilities.
However, the giving back doesn’t begin when your wedding ends. When you book your special day on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, BTTS makes a donation in the couple’s name to their charity of their choice.
Whatever cause you choose, those who value eco-friendliness will be glad to know there are several sustainable practices in place at BTTS.
“One of our greatest efforts with sustainability is purposefully shopping local. That may not come top of mind, but
when you shop local, you’re reducing energy costs and carbon footprint from delivery,” Brooks says. “All of our chicken is Ohio-raised. All of our beef, to the extent we can, comes from local farmers. The fish we use is sourced in a sustainable way. On the floral side, we strive for the elimination and reduction of floral foam, so one of our industry practices is to use reusable chicken wire instead of the traditional green foam.”
The flower arrangements aren’t the only place BTTS is kicking floral foam to the curb. What began as a company-wide clean-up day in Italian Village has evolved into a week of volunteering at a different charity every day.
“That might be feeding them a meal that we prepared through Gourmet Fresh or cleaning and pulling weeds at the [Victory Ministries] Center of Hope,” Vincent says. “We’re currently in our
The Estate at New Albany
season of giving where we just packed 120 meal baskets to benefit families in the Whitehall area through Center of Hope, and we’re starting to get close to our Adopt a Hero initiative where we partner with the 3rd & Goal Foundation to help provide joy this holiday season to some of our veterans.”
You may also spot the BTTS team volunteering at Flying Horse Farms, a camp for children with severe illness, and the Columbus Dream Center, which provides resources to those in need.
Fiori Florals, the flower arm of BTTS, supports nonprofits with blooms for their charity galas. It’s provided florals for Flying Horse Farms, Local Matters and Thriving Beyond Breast Cancer—with the latter hitting particularly close to home.
“January [2025] will be three years since my diagnosis,” shares Heather Vincent, BTTS’ marketing director.
“There are so many organizations for research funding, so we’re trying to get money in the pockets of women under 40. Cancer is very expensive, and when you’re under that age, you’re not set up financially with a huge retirement fund or savings, and you may be raising a family at the same time. So when you’re hit with these large bills, you might be trying to decide between paying for your treatment and your rent or groceries or electricity. We wanted to try to help bridge that gap with financial stipends.”
Vincent is on the advisory board of Thriving Beyond Breast Cancer and helps bring the organization’s annual gala to life through BTTS.
As if that wasn’t enough, BTTS facilitated a $50,000 dream wedding giveaway.
“I said, ‘What if we were able to give
away a wedding to a deserving couple who may not be able to have that without a giveaway?’ Then Heather [Vincent] really spearheaded that. We partnered with more than 20 different local vendors and that couple is getting married at The Estate at New Albany,” Brooks says.
BTTS received over 100 nominations for deserving couples, and it’s the lucky two who will receive an all-inclusive wedding package, florals, a photographer, the wedding dress, the suit, a photo booth, hair and makeup, the invitations, a spa experience, and little gifts from High Bank Distillery.
However BTTS gives back, it all comes back to company values. As Brooks says, “We’re a part of the community, so we’re invested in the community.”
