Home & Garden Show Preview

Emma Frankart Henterly, editor with Dispatch Magazines contributed to this story.

The annual rite of spring, adapted for the COVID-19 pandemic, offers information and inspiration for homeowners. There’s no denying that the coronavirus pandemic has altered life as we know it in 2020 and 2021. Now with vaccine rollout beginning and the prospect of life returning to normal, the spring Dispatch Home & Garden Show, presented by Ohio Mulch, is evolving to help ensure a safe, educational experience for all. “The safety of our guests and participating companies is our No. 1 priority this year,” says Stephen Zonars, general manager of the Home & Garden Show. “That’s why we’ve implemented an exhaustive list of health protocols and then some. We’ve re-modeled for safety, going above and beyond minimal practices to put on a retail experience that provides all of the information and expert advice

that guests expect.” To that end, this year’s show, held March 6–14 at the Ohio Expo Center’s Bricker Building, will look a little different from years past. Instead of celebrities, stage presentations, workshops and demonstrations, expect a streamlined focus on craftsmen and experts from trusted local companies eager to help homeowners with their indoor and outdoor projects. “Small businesses have been especially hard-hit by the economic effects of the pandemic,” Zonars says. “This year, we’re supporting local by focusing on local companies that may be struggling more than the larger retailers in our region. Many companies participating in this year’s show are family-owned and -operated right here in Central Ohio. The Home & Garden Show is a way to help local businesses stay in business.” The Home & Garden Show is continuing its partnership with the Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio, who will be at the event so guests can check with them about contractors before they engage them in their home improvement projects. Whether you

need insight for a DIY project or startto-finish design and execution of a remodel, the show’s vendors have you covered. Local pros will be on hand to help with your needs for flooring, kitchen, bath, windows, landscaping, furniture and nearly every space in your home. One thing that isn’t changing in 2021: the show’s beloved indoor gardens. This year, six local landscaping companies will each build a stunning backyard getaway that showcases ways to upgrade your outdoor living space, from a movie theater garden to a sleek alfresco workspace that converts to a bar just in time for happy hour. Safety procedures for guests will include: closed concessions – only bottled non-alcoholic beverages will be sold, no food; limited attendance

Tickets: Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and must be purchased in advance online; there will be no on-site walkup ticket sales. Discounts and Promotions: Visit Central Ohio Lowe’s locations for a $3-off coupon code to use when purchasing your adult tickets online. Adult tickets at 3pm every day include a free gift you’ll pick up at the show – a Zoo ticket on weekends and garden gloves weekdays – and adult 5pm tickets are half price and child 5pm tickets are free, and a ticket is still required.

during all hours, regulated by a timed online ticketing system that allows guests to choose a time to attend (guests can adjust their time selection, pending availability, in advance if needed); dozens of hand sanitizer stations throughout the venue; social distancing measures and reminders; a strict mask requirement for everyone 2 years old and up; additional staff to enforce safety protocols and regular sanitization of surfaces. Safety procedures for staff and booth workers include temperature checks on arrival and frequent hand washing. People who do not feel well or have a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher are asked to not attend this year. Online information about each vendor will be available for people who are unable to attend due to health concerns.

Special “thank you” tickets for healthcare workers, military, first responders and teachers are also available online and are complimentary. Pandemic elevates Backyard Garden Awards competition

By A. Kevin Corvo The Columbus Dispatch USA TODAY NETWORK

Four years after its inaugural event, the Dispatch Home and Garden Show’s Backyard Garden Awards continue to attract increasing numbers of entries. “(The Backyard Garden Awards has) grown dramatically,” said Mark Reiner, vice president of Oakland Nurseries. Columbus-based Oakland Nurseries, with four locations in central Ohio, was founded 81 years ago and is the presenting sponsor of the Backyard Garden Awards. First held in 2018, the Backyard Garden Awards, like most events, was forced to become a virtual contest last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic and is expected to remain so for 2021. Contestants will submit photos of their backyard gardens and landscaping online starting July 1. In August, a team of Master Gardeners from the Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener program, who serve as judges, will review the submissions and, if possible, visit the finalists in person to see their backyards. First-, second- and thirdplace winners are chosen in six categories. The winners are invited to the Fall Dispatch Home & Garden Show to accept their awards, which include prizes from Oakland Nurseries. Some of the winners are profiled in The Columbus Dispatch’s “At Home” section. About 20 volunteer master gardeners who have completed the program at the

OSU Extension serve as judges for the contest, said Mike Hogan, coordinator of the master gardener program. The program is part of College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and within the OSU Extension, an outreach by OSU to provide educational opportunities to the public. “It’s a way to give back to the community,” and in this instance, provide collegelevel agricultural and horticultural lessons in soil, compost, climate and how to grow plants and vegetables, Hogan said. Reiner said he thinks the COVID-19 pandemic is a factor in the popularity of the Backyard Garden Awards in 2020. “The awards were growing (but) there was even more interest (last year) because of COVID-19,” he said. “People were home and had more time on their hands.” That extra time was used by some people to start, or resume, garden and backyard improvements, Reiner said. But even before the pandemic, Oakland Nurseries encouraged people to spend more time in their backyards by providing gift cards toward the supplies needed to beautify the areas. “The Dispatch came to us with the idea of a contest. It was limited in the first year (but) we have promoted it in our stores each year (and are) proud it continues to grow,” Reiner said. Last year contest attracted almost 400 submissions, according to Stephen Zonars, general manager of shows for The Columbus Dispatch.

This year the awards welcome a new partner, AgPro. “We are excited to join the Backyard Garden Awards this year because we know that avid gardeners rely on many of the tools and brands for which Ag-Pro is known,” said Jenna Watson, Ag-Pro Ohio Marketing Manager. Homeowners can visit their local Ag-Pro for sales, parts and service of equipment from John Deere, Honda, STIHL and more. “We look forward to celebrating the best backyard gardens this year.” “The Backyard Garden Awards were born in a conversation I had with Mike

Hogan. The structure all came from Mike’s vast knowledge and experience,” Zonars said. The goal of the contest is not only to recognize the owners but expose their yards to a wider audience. “What excites me about the program is that most of these backyards are only seen by the homeowners and their family,” Zonars said. “This program gives every gardener a chance to showcase their amazing backyards with all of central Ohio.”

The columbus dispatch home & Garden Show event guide

Local companies ready with innovations, on-trend products By Sandy Wallace For USA TODAY NETWORK

Many of the companies in the 2021 Spring Dispatch Home & Garden Show agree on one thing: The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted people to pay more attention to their indoor and outdoor living spaces. People who regularly attend the show know that among the highlights is talking with representatives from local, trusted companies to find out how to make their home more beautiful, functional or up-to-date. They’re looking for fresh, new, trending and innovative products and ideas. Guests can count on seeing both the expected and unexpected at the show, that’s why taking the time to ask companies “what’s new” can be an eye opening journey. Read on for a glimpse into just six of the companies participating this year.

Tupperware - This isn’t your grandma’s Tupperware. Loretta DiCenso-Tiber, who has been selling Tupperware for 26 years, said the company is changing with the times. “When all this started, we thought, ‘What are we going to do?’ But the parent company switched gears and moved us into social media,” she said. That means Facebook and Zoom parties instead of in-home gatherings. “Virtually 99 percent of what we do is virtual now,” DiCenso-Tiber said. “It was trending that way before the pandemic but became more important when the pandemic hit.” Innovative Tupperware products include a pressure cooker and grill designed to be used

in the microwave, a vegetable spiralizer and a grater, both part of Tupperware’s collection of tools and storage systems for the refrigerator, freezer and pantry. DiCenso-Tiber said she will offer items “at a great discount” at the Home & Garden Show.

Cedar and Stone - Owner Corey Schoo left a job in private aviation six years ago to found Cedar and Stone, a business that builds custom-frame pergolas and pavilions of the art of hand-chiseled stone and handcrafted wood. Many projects use Shou-Sugi-Ban, an ancient Japanese process that involves burning the surface of the wood, cleaning it and applying tung oil or some other natural oil. “Every project we did last year, every surface that was horizontal to the ground got burned,” Schoo said. The process makes the wood “waterproof, rot-proof and insect-proof,” he said. Cedar and Stone uses “a lot of ax work and hand tools,” he said. “We use some machinery, but it’s on the smaller side, like chainsaws and a circle saw.” Wood-to-wood connections are made via mortise-and-tenon joining and glue never is used. The most common project for Cedar and Stone is a 16-foot by 16-foot pergola installed in a concrete base, but Schoo said the time involved and the price depend on the size of the project. “I enjoy the Home and Garden Show because I get to spend a lot of time talking to people and learning about what they like and want,” Schoo said. “This year, I hope

people can see what we do and get an idea of what they’re looking at and get a better idea of pricing.”

Columbus Garage Floor Coating - Don’t let the company name fool you. These hard-wearing floors also are used in commercial and residential spaces that have nothing to do with garages. The company was founded in 2009, but before it opened its doors, general manager Rick St. Onge said he, his wife, Rhonda, and son, Barrett, completed training in Arizona. “My wife actually owns the business,” he said. “She is an Ohio State MBA graduate.” He said the pandemic has had an effect on his business. “People who have been waiting to do improvement projects now have the time to deal with them. Hopefully this will be a big year for the whole home-improvement industry.” The most popular finishes are metallic coatings, which also can be marbleized, he said. The application process is fairly simple. “We grind the concrete with diamond grinders to get down to porous, virgin concrete because you want a fresh substrate,” he said. “Then we repair any cracks or pits and put the coatings down, starting with an epoxy base coat.” Columbus Garage Floor Coating will offer a $500 discount on two-car garage projects or projects of a comparable size to Home & Garden Show attendees. St. Onge said visitors can look at samples and learn about the company and its products.

Residences Kitchen and Bath Design - Keith Rupp knows firsthand how the pandemic has affected careers: He opened Residences Kitchen and Bath Design in 2020 because he was laid off after 25 years of working for others. “Being an owner is different than working for someone else, but it’s been extremely rewarding,” he said. Because of the pandemic, Rupp said he is seeing more attention on home improvements. “A lot of times, people will remodel the spaces others come into,” he said, citing the kitchen as an example. “Now we’re seeing more time spent on remodeling bathrooms or home offices. Especially with open floor plans, people are looking for small areas where they can spend quiet time.” When it comes to kitchen trends, Rupp said he’s seeing larger islands, more concern for storage needs, more ergonomic cabinets and storage, more rack storage and better lighting plans. Bathroom trends include larger showers, zero-threshold showers and smaller tubs, if there is a tub at all. As for colors, he said gray and white still are popular. “But we’re seeing a move toward warmer colors and the use of natural wood, but not like the natural wood of the ’50s. It’s more of a driftwood color,” he said. “We try to focus on … staying updated on state-of-the-art designs and knowing when new products are around. We like to educate our clients on the possibilities.” Continued on page 10

Hinton Apiaries - Visitors to the Hinton Apiaries booth will find what owner Jerry Hinton calls “a plethora of information” but no bees. “It’s too cold to take bees; we can’t really transport them when it’s too cold,” he said. “It’s usually into June before I start thinking about taking bees anywhere.” Talking to Home & Garden Show attendees gives Hinton a chance to do two things: encourage new beekeepers and educate the public about the importance of keeping pollinators like honeybees healthy. He said he has seen some increased interest in beekeeping during the pandemic, as well as an increase in the number of hives existing beekeepers maintain. It’s important, he said, for experienced beekeepers to mentor the “newbies.” “There are mentors galore out there,” he said. “Our goal is to keep the newbies going after year two. That’s when the majority of issues start to appear. If we can get them past year two or three, we’re fine.” In addition to honey made with pollen from 10 to 12 types of flowers, Hinton Apiaries, founded in 2010, also sells beeswaxbased skincare products and soaps as well as polishes for wood and metal, “all dictated by Mother Nature.” Mh3 Solar LLC - Going “green” and saving money are the top reasons Heidi Hulse cites when asked why people are interested in solar energy. Beyond that, she said they should consider Mh3 Solar LLC because the family-owned business in Knox County is small enough

to be able to offer better pricing because of lower overhead costs. Mh3 Solar LLC, founded in 1992, sells and installs solar panels on commercial, agricultural and residential properties. “We have found people are more interested in exploring solar now because they have been staying home more, using more electricity,” Hulse said. Her business designs solar arrays based on a client’s energy consumption, not the size of a building. “Projects can cost anywhere from $10,000 up to $50,000 depending on electricity usage and what the client hopes to accomplish,” she said. “Most projects run from $10,000 to $24,000 - about the price of a car - and that’s with a pretty high offset.” Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity thus reducing the amount of energy a customer pulls from the electric grid. Offsets are an important part of the equation when it comes to saving money. Hulse said a 40% offset means a system is designed to save 40% on a customer’s electric bill. The company’s goal is to design a system that provides an offset of 80% to 90%, she said. Hulse said new solar-panel technology and microinverters that convert direct current (DC) energy to alternating current (AC) energy at the panel provide a safer and more efficient installation. Mh3 Solar Energy LLC installs solar systems throughout Ohio. The company is offering $1,000 off projects booked during the Columbus Dispatch Spring Home & Garden Show.

Garden designs offer six different ideas for ‘Backyard Getaways’

By A. Kevin Corvo The Columbus Dispatch USA TODAY NETWORK

Visitors to the 2021 Spring Dispatch Home and Garden Show, presented by Ohio Mulch, can expect to see the best work of central Ohio landscape designers and get ideas about how their own yards could be transformed. Each Spring Dispatch Home and Garden Show has a theme; show organizers didn’t need to search far for a 2021 spring theme: Backyard Getaways. “There will be six gardens at the show, each of them related to the theme that has more prominence than ever with the pandemic,” said Stephen Zonars, general manager of the show. “The Home and Garden show defines the garden theme based upon current trends in our society. ‘Backyard Getaways’ seemed obvious, given the pandemic and how everyone is stuck at home.” Each of the six landscaping companies participating in the show at the Ohio Expo Center -- Five Seasons Landscape Management, Oakland Nurseries, Riepenhoff Landscape, Seely’s Landscape, Hedge Landscape and Landscape Design Solutions - presented their ideas to be reviewed by a committee before a final plan was designed. “One of our objectives was to make sure that each garden covered a different aspect of the backyard getaway so that collectively, they would tell a story that is interesting to the guests attending,” Zonars said. The gardens are organized every year by the Columbus Landscape Association and its members.

HIGH HAMMOCK

RUSTIC SPRING GETAWAY

by Five Seasons Landscape Management

by Oakland Nurseries

Not for anyone with any fear of heights, High Hammock’s entry in The Spring Dispatch Home and Garden Show features an elevated two-person hammock perched above a patio and dining area. The designer’s own backyard served as a template. Mike Moulton, a landscape designer at Five Seasons Landscape Management, said the design provides those in the hammock “with a 180-degree view” of the backyard. Below the hammock is a grill counter, constructed from recycled wood pallets, as is the fence on the garden’s perimeter. “The steps up to the hammock and the platform will also be made from pallet material,” Moulton said. The use of this material follows a trend, he said. “People are using pallets to build a variety of backyard things, including sheds,” Moulton said. A pre-ordered pavilion will be assembled

on site adjacent to the patio and dining area. Other features of the design include water, low-voltage lighting and evergreen trees. “A simple water feature will add gentle, soothing sounds for relaxation,” Moulton said. Low-voltage lighting lines a path through the garden and border walls are built from natural Ohio granite boulders. A variety of flowering shrubs, perennials and annuals will provide color, and large evergreen trees will provide the look of a hidden woodland garden, Moulton said. White pines, Canaan firs, rhododendron, azalea and lilacs are among the varieties in the display. “Come visit us at your ‘staycation’ relaxation garden,” Moulton said.

The sights, sounds and scents of early springtime will assail the senses in Oakland Nurseries’ exhibit. The landscaping company has been a fixture at the Home & Garden Show since its inception more than 50 years ago. Daffodils, crocuses, forsythia and redbuds are plentiful in the garden, said Bryan Joyce, a landscape designer for Oakland Nurseries. Wooden trellises welcome visitors to the backyard. The space is designed so the sound of falling water from a lazy waterfall surrounded by oaks, maples, azaleas and red-stem dogwoods draws them further into the garden, Joyce said. The variety of plants and trees is designed to fill the visual field with a prism of colors. “The early spring color of redbuds and spring snow crabapples lead visitors through the garden, while river birch, oak and maple trees create the canopy above,” he said. Apart from the aesthetics of the Early

Springtime Glory theme, Oakland’s backyard escape also provides the opportunity for activities such as roasting marshmallows at a fire pit. A closer look reveals other unique plantings: Golden Mop chamaecyparis provide an accent of evergreen at the back of the garden, adjacent to glorious forsythia, Joyce said. “A stately garnet weeping Japanese maple draws your eye from the fire pit into the beautifully naturalized planting,” he said. “Patrons can recreate all or part of what they see in our exhibit in their own backyards. “They can take pieces of it to use in their own backyards or we can help recreate it,” Joyce said.

Specialty-Style Windows Are In Vogue at Local Manufacturer Jim Fischer USA TODAY NETWORK

Mike Rosati is busy. That in and of itself is not new, Rosati said, as he prepared for the 2021 version of the event he called the unofficial start of window replacement season - the Spring Dispatch Home & Garden Show. But for much of the past year, despite the weirdness brought about by a global pandemic - or perhaps because of it - Rosati Windows, the Columbus-based replacement window manufacturer, has been in in-season mode. For seven weeks last spring, the company was shut down due to health guidelines. “Because we do replacement windows only and not new-build, we were considered non-essential,” Rosati said. When the factory and showroom reopened, his full staff hit the ground running. “I had to send 100 people home. But I was committed to paying my employees the whole time. When we could re-open, I had 100 employees come back,” Rosati said. “I’m proud of that.” And ever since, Rosati has been busy.

People are updating, remodeling and reimagining their homes. “Maybe it was because of the stimulus checks, maybe people just have extra income because they’re not eating out at restaurants or taking vacations. Maybe because more people are working from home and they’re seeing things they wouldn’t normally see or using their homes in different ways. But people seem to want to ‘fix the envelope,’ to have that added safety and security and appeal that comes with new windows,” Rosati said. One change Rosati has seen is that more customers are opting for the in-home visit from a member of the company’s sales staff. The factory and showroom are “following all protocols,” he said, but potential customers seem to appreciate the added

comfort of having the company’s products explained in their own homes. Specialty-style windows are particularly in vogue right now, Rosati said, from circles and other shapes to bay and garden windows. Blinds between the panes of glass is another popular feature, as is the trend toward “more and more energy-efficient glass.” He’s also noticed the scope of many projects is expanding. “Often we’d have customers maybe just do the front of the house or a limited number of windows, but right now, we’re seeing a lot of people knocking out the whole house at one time,” he said. Another aspect of his business that’s changed during the pandemic is occasional challenges with the supply chain for materi-

als. Glass, in particular, can sometimes be difficult to obtain. “It has helped that we don’t buy anything from overseas. I buy as much as I can from Ohio companies, and the rest we get from other places in the U.S.,” Rosati said. “We’re lucky to be positioned with such strong vendors.” He said he also always feels lucky to have potential customers visit the company at the Home & Garden Show, with which his company has been involved for about 30 years. “I appreciate that they’re coming out and taking a look at us,” he said. Rosati said that, despite the changes in the show this year, he doesn’t expect his company’s participation to change that drastically. “We’re not sure what to expect in some respects, but we’ll go about our business and see what happens,” Rosati said. “We’ll keep it low-key, because everything’s been pretty hectic for the past 12 months. But we’re prepared to meet people at the show like we always do.”

NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

GARDEN PARTY

by Hedge Landscape LLC

by Riepenhoff Landscape

The silver screen provided the inspiration for this garden design. “I designed this garden because I put something like it in my own backyard last year during the pandemic,” said Steve Maravich, a landscape architect for Hedge Landscape LLC. “At this time of distance in our lives, we’ve created a way to safely bring people together for a night at the movies,” he said. “We encourage you to take your mind off your troubles and enjoy a fun activity that typically doesn’t occur outside. “The movie screen may initially draw you to the space, but the outdoor seating, fire pit and plant choices will keep you entertained,” Maravich said. “The landscape promotes lounging and the comfortable, spacious seating is perfect for lingering in the backyard.” A fire pit is not only aesthetically pleasing, but useful for making refreshments to be eaten during the movie, he said. The garden is designed to encourage other family activities aside from watching movies

- stargazing, for example. “It is not one-dimensional,” Maravich said. Apart from being an entertainment center, Hedge Landscape’s backyard garden provides the traditional trappings. “Using white blooming flowers of serviceberry and Cornelian-cherry dogwood encourages dimension in the garden,” Maravich said. “The addition of light-colored blooms draws attention to the more eye-catching colors incorporated by containers or garden art.” Natural elements also are present. “Water is an essential element to creating a relaxing atmosphere for family and friends. The water feature brings movement, sound and tranquility to the space while providing opportunities to interact with nature,” Maravich said.

People are spending a lot more time with members of their immediate family thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and sometimes the house seems a lot more crowded. That perception resulted in lots of creative thinking about how to expand space, said Nick Besser, a landscape architect for Riepenhoff Landscape. “Part of the inspiration for this design is the pandemic. So many people called us last year and asked us for ways to spruce up and create a living area in the backyard,” he said. Many people learned that enlarging inside spaces such a kitchen or family room, could cost more than $10,000 so an alternative became modifying outdoor areas, Besser said. Lighting is the centerpiece of Besser’s design. “As you enter our garden, you’ll quickly notice the LED ‘party lights’ strung across the main patio area. The lights not only create a festive atmosphere but functionally. They allow the patio to be used for a variety of uses well after dark,” he said.

The LED lights, strung from an arbor in the garden, “provide a ceiling” to the outdoor room, Besser said. The design also includes an area to set up a grill and a place for a flat-screen television. But the design doesn’t overlook what is typically seen in a garden. “The patio is surrounded by a variety of plantings intended to provide year-round color,” Besser said. “For a winter effect, evergreen trees are complemented by yellow-green Golden Mop false cypress and boxwood hedges, while masses of lilac, Virginia sweetspire and Knockout roses provide wonderful floral color during the spring and summer months, as well as attractive fall foliage as a bonus.”

Ohio Mulch: ‘Greener’ landscaping is the ‘wave of the future’ By CHRIS BOURNEA For the USA TODAY NETWORK

Ohio Mulch Supply Inc. produces and sells more mulch in Ohio than any other manufacturer and increasingly, the company’s focus is on “cleaner, greener, better” products that benefit the environment, company spokesman Ron Frost said. The Columbus-based landscape-supply company is the presenting sponsor of the 2021 Spring Dispatch Home & Garden Show. It is providing mulch and soil to this year’s participating vendors. “We spent most of our business life in sustainability,” Frost said. “We look at things that are going to the landfill and see what we can repurpose. “Yard waste is a big component of that. We try to keep it from going to the landfill and repurpose it and make mulches and soils.” Jim Weber II opened the first Ohio Mulch retail store on April 1, 1984, in Blacklick. In the fall of 1991, he began manufacturing the company’s own

hardwood mulches. Recycling is a major component of the company’s production process, Frost said. “In Delaware County, they have big horse shows and horse farms and we take their manure and repurpose it,” he said. “If you look around the cities, there’s a buildup up in wood if there’s been a fire. We repurpose that and make mulches.” As Ohio Mulch’s client base and business grew to include major retailers such as BP and Home Depot, as well as large landscape companies, garden centers and nurseries, Weber continued to build retail stores throughout central Ohio. Eventually, Weber moved production from Blacklick to a larger facility on the southeast side of Columbus, where the corporate offices are currently located. In July 1997, he opened an Ohio Mulch facility

in southern Georgia, where the company produces cypress, pine and cedar mulch. The company ships the products by railcar to Ohio. Ohio Mulch currently operates 24 retail stores and production facilities in Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, southern Georgia and northern Kentucky. Over the years, it has streamlined distribution and loading processes at its retail locations and has expanded delivery services as more consumers migrate to online shopping, Frost said. “We came up with the tagline ‘skip the store, we’ll deliver it to your door.’ We’ve beefed up our home delivery,” he said. “We’re doing 40 to 50 deliveries a day. People can go online and buy it and we’ll deliver it to their door.” Ohio Mulch has installed acrylic dividers and other enhanced safety protocols at its

retail stores due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Frost estimates it also has completed 30,000 deliveries over the past year. Much of the increased demand for delivery is driven by people spending more time at home, he said. “One thing that we focused on in the last year in COVID is a lot of people are trying to grow their own vegetables and be sustainable,” he said. “We have a wide variation of soils they can buy to grow their own vegetables and their own plants and start their own gardens. We think that’s the wave of the future.” Ohio Mulch has participated in the Home & Garden Show for the past 30 years, either as a sponsor or a vendor, he said. “It’s a unique opportunity to engage with the community,” Frost said. “It spawns engagement with our vendors and our customers.” For more information about Ohio Mulch, visit Ohiomulch.com

INSIDE OUTSIDE:

THE OUTDOOR ROOMS EXPERIENCE By Seely’s Landscape Nursery

The backyard design by Seely’s Landscape Nursery aims to make the isolation and seclusion forced on the world by the COVID-19 pandemic more bearable. “Our intent is to show people a way to redo an outdoor space to make it more functional for entertainment,” said Roger Seely, a landscape designer for Seely’s Landscape Nursery. “It is accomplished by selecting multiple rooms from the house and recreating them in a landscape as outdoor living rooms,” he said. Seely’s garden will have a more semiformal English-garden appearance, he said. “Tumbled-stone walls will be filled with flowering trees, evergreens and boxwood hedges, while rows of colorful shrubs, including rhododendron, azalea and forsythia will layer the garden,” he said. A paver walkway leads to a lower patio and outdoor dining room. “Here is where the family can come

together and sit down, talk about the day and enjoy a freshly cooked meal,” Seely said. “From there, the dining room connects to an upper patio area that we refer to as the outdoor family room, a paver patio built underneath a beautiful cedar pergola. “This room contains an elegant fire pit surrounded by seating walls where the family can gather,” for recreation, game night or other activities, Seely said. Adjacent to the outdoor family room is the outdoor bedroom, featuring a queen-size swinging bed. The bed is suspended by thick rope from old, reclaimed barn beams above a gravel and bluestone floor, Seely said. The room features an outdoor projector screen that pulls down from a cedar arbor and provides “a perfect place to relax and enjoy family movie night,” he said.

IT’S 5 O’CLOCK SOMEWHERE GARDEN By Landscape Design Solutions

Work and home are often one and the same in the world of COVID-19 and the It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere Garden is designed to combine the necessities of a workspace with the amenities of a home. “This is our spin on turning your backyard into your very own outdoor home office,” said Jacob Basnett, owner and managing partner of Landscape Design Solutions. The design is meant to create an outdoor area that is “an extension of the home,” offering a place to not only conduct business but to relax in the same area, Basnett said. As the coronavirus pandemic continues into the foreseeable future, Basnett said more people are investing in their homes. “Owners are seeing the value in investments into their home,” he said. “The situation we’re in, we will be dealing with for a few years. (The pandemic) isn’t going away with a shot. This garden provides areas to conduct business calls, take a break for lunch, and retire whenever you call it a day, Basnett said. “We’re all tired of being cooped up all day,

so why not bring the Zoom meeting outside to your cozy patio space?” he said. The entrance to the garden is flanked by two redwood trees leading into a 20-foot sweep of large-leaf rhododendrons and white azaleas. “The smell of dwarf lilac will guide you to a three-column basalt stone water fountain that provides the relaxing sound of bubbling water that is sometimes needed on those trying days at the office,” Basnett said. A rustic, rough-cedar pavilion provides multiple places to open up a laptop and dial into work, he said. The pavilion also includes a sitting area with a television and fireplace. Whether it’s been a particularly frustrating or productive day, you can clock out a little early and stroll to the outdoor bar at the pavilion. “Pour yourself a glass of your favorite beverage to close out the workday. After all, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere,” Basnett said.

RiteRug focused on safely giving customers what they want By Jim Fischer ThisWeek Community News

RiteRug staffers at this year’s Spring Dispatch Home & Garden Show will be diligently disinfecting all product samples because Larry Noel wants you to touch everything and feel safe doing so. “It’s the only way to really get an idea of what you want to go in your home,” said Noel, the company’s retail division president. And Noel wants to make sure RiteRug customers get what they want. Educating potential customers has always been a signature of the company, he said, but the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has meant finding new ways to meet customers’ needs. “We’ve had our salespeople even outside sharing samples on people’s porches in the cold,” Noel said. The Columbus-based flooring company has reduced hours at its stores and showrooms, but has gone out of its way to accommodate customers’ schedules,

which aren’t always what they used to be. Customers’ needs aren’t always what they used to be, either, Noel said. With families spending more time in their homes, and with money saved from vacations and other discretionary spending, homeowners are seeking out new looks and new textures to create a new feeling in their homes. “People home all the time are tired of looking at their house the way it is,” Noel joked, adding, “What we’re seeing, though, is a lot of people upgrading. They’re ready for it to not have the same look … People want to put their signature on it. ‘This is our home, and we want it to look great.’ “And they’re looking for that particu-

lar person who gets it and can help them find what they’re looking for.” Noel said he plans to have what people are looking for at the Spring Dispatch Home & Garden Show. Durable, stain-resistant flooring that’s also attractive and feels good never goes out of style, he said, but the industry is always looking for better ways to meet customers’ needs. Among the new carpet styles and colors are a polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a polyester made of recycled materials that “feels like cotton and wears like iron,” Noel said. He acknowledged that “polyester, to many, is a bad word,” but said PET needs to be felt to be believed.

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring isn’t a new trend, but using it throughout an entire home is, Noel said. He added that RiteRug also has luxury vinyl tile for applications in bathrooms and kitchens; it offers the look and even the feel of ceramic tile without the extensive installation and the accompanying mess and disruption. Noel said he and his staff are looking forward to this year’s Home & Garden Show because, like many visitors, they’re looking for “little bits of normal.” He knows the show won’t look exactly as it has in the many years RiteRug has been a participant, but meeting potential customers and making sure they know what’s available has always been one of the reasons the company has done the show. “People want to see the products, they want information and knowledge and they want it from the experts,” Noel said. “And we want to sell people what they need.”

UV light can help keep indoor air clean

By Scott Gerfen USA TODAY NETWORK

Well before the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, a decades-old technology was zapping the genetic material in viruses, bacteria and fungi, preventing them from reproducing. Today, more and more homeowners are harnessing the power of ultraviolet light (UV), which has been described as bringing the sun’s energy indoors. “I would say before the pandemic, it was a sector that had been gaining in popularity, and COVID-19 has taken it to a whole new level,” said Cameron Young, a comfort consultant with Logan AC & Heat Services Inc., a longstanding sponsor of The Spring Dispatch Home & Garden Show. If members of your family suffer from serious allergies, an HVAC professional may recommend installing a UV light system to kill microbes as they pass through your system, Young said. Logan AC & Heat Services will be

showcasing these products and will have experts on hand to answer questions at this year’s Home & Garden Show. “Indoor air pollution is often five times worse than outdoors,” Young said. “We’re building homes tighter and tighter to make them efficient and we end up trapping in pollutants, bacteria, cleaning agents and other things we drag in from the outside. A traditional HVAC system is only taking care of onethird of air pollution in your home.” He said Logan’s Apco-X whole-house UV light treatment system eliminates up to 99% of the COVID-19 virus, as well as bacteria and mold spores, from the indoor air. The system is installed into a home’s HVAC airstream, cleaning all the air in the home while saving customers money

by keeping the central air system clean. Logan also sells the Fresh-Aire Blue Tube UV, which Young said is the most popular germicidal UV product in the world. Installed near the indoor AC evaporator coil, the UV light helps kill biological contaminants and promotes healthy indoor air quality. Bulbs last up to 24 months. UV lights often are paired with electronic air cleaners, such as Logan’s Perfect Air Plus, Young said. The oneinch-thick air filter can be added to most newer heating systems and eliminates up to 99% of airborne allergens, including pollen, dust, dust mites, pet dander and odors. Fresher air leads to healthier living, and Logan’s team can help Columbus home-

owners achieve it this year, Young said. “If you’re not sure of what you need, have one of our consultants take a look,” said Amanda Kinsella, the company’s marketing director. “Our advice is free. We want to make sure you get the right size, style and UV system that meets your budget.” According to information from the company, Logan AC & Heat Services has been providing Ohio residents with professional installation, upkeep and repair of home furnaces, heat pumps and air conditioners for more than 50 years. The company serves the Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati areas. Technicians have the skills and experience to offer furnace installation, maintenance, repair and replacement; heat pump repair, replacement, installation and maintenance; AC maintenance, repair, replacement and installation; indoor airquality improvement; duct cleaning and emergency HVAC assistance.

Hiring a Home Improvement Contractor? Start with Trust!

Buying a home is one of the biggest decisions you can make and most homeowners will tell you that from the time they purchase their home, there’s always something that needs to be done. And since we’re all spending a lot more time at home right now, the home improvement projects that we’ve been able to put off for a while are staring us right in the face. Selecting the right contractor for home improvement projects has an added layer of trust involved, as you are inviting the company into your personal space. When all is said and done, you want to make sure you choose a company who does the job well, takes care of your home, and takes the proper precautions to keep you, your family and their employees safe while working in your home. When choosing vendors to work with, don’t underestimate the importance of referrals from friends and family, and also conduct a simple online search through organizations like the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, the Federal Trade Commission and your Better Business Bureau. BBB knows well the importance of providing consumers with accurate information about the trustworthiness of businesses; for 100 years, BBB has served Central Ohio as a community based resource that is at the forefront of helping consumers “Start with Trust”, especially as they make important decisions on who they hire for special home improvement projects, the trusted realtor to find dream house, or the right bank to help fund these projects.

BBB recommends these tips to think about when you plan to hire a contractor to work in your home: Research their track record. You can search for a contractor’s Business Profile at bbb.org to see if they are an Accredited Business, get free information on any history of complaints, and read verified Customer Reviews. Ask for multiple quotes. You should always shop around and get at least three quotes from different businesses. Make sure all bids consider the same set of criteria. Remember that the lowest bid may not necessarily be the best; if one bid is significantly lower than the others are, the contractor may be cutting corners or may not understand your work requirements and needs. Get it in writing. Always get estimates in writing and never let any work begin without a written and signed contract. Do not be pressured into signing an agreement before you are ready and make sure you read and understand everything before signing. The contract should include contact information, start and complete dates, a detailed description of the exact work to be done, any material costs, payment arrangements, and warranty information. Specify who is to obtain necessary building permits and who is responsible for clean-up. Make sure all verbal promises are included in the contract. Verify license and insurance. Always be sure that the company you decide to work with has the necessary licenses and insurance to work in your region. Once you have your contractor’s insurance information, call

the carrier to confirm appropriate coverage for workers compensation, property damage, and personal liability in case of accidents. Confirm building permits. Your contractor must have the correct permits before starting your project. They will usually obtain the permits, but you will probably pay for them. That should be detailed in your contract. Inquire about a lien waiver. A lien waiver is a statement from your contractor that says all suppliers and subcontractors have been paid for their work. Arrange a payment schedule. Never pay in full up front. Stagger your payments so your final payment is not due until the work is complete and you have fully inspected it.

Do not pay cash; make sure a check is written to a company, not an individual, or that you use a credit card. Get a receipt. Request a receipt marked “Paid in Full” when the job is completed and your final payment made. Keep your contract. Hold on to your contract for future reference or if any questions arise after the work is complete. BBB knows that your home is your safe haven, and choosing someone to work on - or in - your home is one of life’s big decisions. The last thing anyone wants to have happen is for a company to start a job and not finish, or to ineffectively repair your home. When you’re mapping out resources to plan your renovation or improvement project, be sure to add BBB to the list.

Only Online Tickets this Year, and New Parking Entrance

TICKETS

Before you leave home make sure you already purchased your tickets, and have your mask. Where Did the Ticket Window Go? When you arrive at the entrance to the 2021 Spring Dispatch Home & Garden Show you may wonder where the ticket window is? The answer: gone. To keep everyone as safe as possible we are not selling tickets onsite so there will be no ticket window at the event. This year the ticket window is exclusively online – you must buy tickets online before you arrive. We are doing this for good reasons, as part of our Safe Operating Plan. First, we can only provide safe attendance levels during all operating hours if guests purchase tickets online. When the attendance limit is reached for an entry time, it will be sold out and guests will be able to select from another that is open. Second, selling tickets onsite involves lots of touching, and we want to minimize or eliminate that.

CD-0006274047-03

How to select and use online entry time tickets 1 Go online to DispatchHomeAndGardenShow.com, click “buy tickets” 2 Select the day you want to attend

3 Select the entry time on that day

NOTE: Each entry time has a limited # of tickets, when sold out select a different entry time. You will only be allowed to enter the doors during the date and entry time on your ticket, then you can stay as long as you want. You can change your entry time after purchase by contacting us at ticketing@usatventures.com. ONLINE ENTRY TIME CHOICES - ADULT TICKETS

When is the best time to attend? If you are looking to attend when the fewest number of people are at the show – so everyone can spread out and feel even more safe – the better times are later in the day. In a normal year the busier times are the first several hours after the doors open. If you decide to attend earlier in the day rest assured that we are limiting attendance to provide ample social distancing. The least busy times tend to be later in the day, after 3 p.m. and even less after 5 p.m. When you go online and look at the options for tickets, consider the 3 p.m. ticket – we’re offering a gift that you’ll pick up at the show with purchase of the adult $10 ticket – or the 5 p.m. ticket that’s half price for adults and free for children. Remember that each child will need an individual ticket. The 3 p.m. adult ticket gift on weekends is one complimentary ticket to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, and weekdays is one pair of garden gloves.

Lighter woods, bringing the indoors out and other remodel trends

2020 was a record year for the Columbus housing market. More homes sold faster and for more money than ever before, according a story by the Columbus Dispatch. Homes sold for nearly or above asking prices in most instances. And they went fast. Almost half of the central Ohio homes that sold last year did so in under a week. Of 33,341 homes available, more than 15,000 of them sold within five days, the Dispatch reported. Another reason people are buying up everything they can get their hands on right now is because interest rates are so low. In July, the average 30-year mortgage rate fell below 3%, then hit a low of 2.65% in January. The housing boom shows no signs of slowing so far in 2021. And with homes going so quickly, many buyers are being forced to compromise on their idea of the perfect new home — or to opt to stay put and upgrade instead of moving. In what has been dubbed the “new normal,” people are also spending more time at home because of the pandemic, leading many homeowners toward major remodels. “Our home used to be an escape from the daily routine, and now more than ever it has become our shelter from the outside world,” said Cristina Miguelez, remodeling specialist for Fixr, a resource for home remodeling projects. “Now our home may be more part of our daily routine, too.” The remodeling trend – with better designed spaces for people to gather – is a practical fix, especially in kitchens, as people cook more at home and involve the whole family, said Carla

As far as plant life, the trend is toward low maintenance greenery that adds to the relaxed environment. People also are paying attention to outdoor spaces like patios and decks where they can get together with others at a safe distance, said Lori Wiles, principal interior designer at Lori Wiles Design in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “Outdoor spaces are becoming very real extensions of the home and a much-needed place to retreat out of the house,” Aston said. “Outdoor living will definitely be high on the priority list for more usable space without having to add on.”

Aston, interior designer at Aston Design Studio, The Woodlands, Texas. As people continue to work from home, homeschool their kids, exercise in their living rooms and eat in more than they eat out, they will create spaces to meet each of these needs — as well as spaces to escape their everyday lives. “This will allow us to separate our routine from our respite,” Aston said. Bringing the indoors out Homeowners are looking to create sanctuary spaces adjacent to their homes. Yards and porches are becoming a much-needed source of entertainment. “We want more room to go out and do stuff,” said Roger Seely Jr., of Seely’s Landscape in Hilliard, Ohio. Specifically, the landscape com-

pany has been fielding requests for outdoor fire pits with stone seating to bring some nighttime entertainment to families who spend most of their days indoors. Another feature that Seely is excited about is outdoor screen spaces. As fewer people go to movie theaters, they are looking to bring that experience home in a luxurious way. This can involve hidden movie screens that appear when you need them and even outdoor swinging beds for seating.

Dedicated office spaces As more companies allow employees to work from home, some on a permanent basis, homeowners are looking to dedicate space where they can focus away from the hustle of the rest of the home. “People understand they may not be going back to the office, so they need to improve their home office spaces,” said Wiles. In addition to improving their virtual backgrounds and adding lights for better visuals, homeowners need to think about the acoustics in their home offices. “Many people who have kids or other family members living in an open floor plan house found it difficult to work during quarantine because they don’t have spaces to shut down the noise totally,” Miguelez said. Some people are adjusting by insulating a room so they don’t have to wear headphones all day, said Keith Rupp of Continued on next page

Safety protocols in place for Spring Home & Garden Show By SCOTT GERFEN USA TODAY NETWORK

I

n its 65-year history, the Dispatch Home & Garden Show has grown into the area’s best place to find inspiration for home renovations or spring landscape and outdoor projects. The goal always has been to provide central Ohio homeowners a place to “shop local” with trusted family-owned businesses. However, this year’s event, presented by Ohio Mulch, March 6-14, might be the most memorable, at least for organizers, who’ve been preparing to welcome vendors and guests in the middle of a pandemic in the safest way possible. To do so, this year’s focus will be as a retail experience only with participating local companies providing lots of creativity and inspiration for homeowners. “The Home & Garden Show team has been working tirelessly to assure that the experience is safe for everyone - guests, company representatives, and the show’s staff and workers,” said Stephen Zonars, general manager of the Home & Garden Show. “We have examined and planned the smallest details to assure everyone’s health and safety.” The Dispatch and its partners are firmly committed to strict implementation of an extensive safety operating plan, for which they have sought input from local health officials, he said. To enhance safety, the Home & Garden Show has undergone many changes this year, including taking place in only one building - the Bricker Building at the Ohio Expo Center. The show will include gardens and home-improvement companies but no featured entertainment in order to allow more space for social distancing. The event also is limiting attendance during all operating hours and has implemented an online ticketing process for all guests, so visitors must be sure to reserve a time prior to attending because no tickets will be sold at the doors. Regular adult tickets cost $10 each. As a thank-you to special groups -- including the military, first responders, healthcare workers and teachers -- free admission will be offered Tuesday Mar. 9 through Friday Mar. 12 with a special ticket downloaded online and valid identification presented at

the Guest Services booth. For general admission, guests can select from three time slots, including noon to 3 p.m.; 3-5 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. The weekends of March 6 and 7 and March 13 and 14, will feature an additional 10 a.m. to noon time slot, Zonars said. With the show’s opening hours traditionally being wellattended, he said those who purchase adult tickets for the 3 p.m. time slot will receive a free gift, which can be picked up at the show. On weekends, the gift is one free ticket to the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. On weekdays, the gift is a pair of men’s or women’s first-quality leather-palm gardening gloves. The maximum number of attendees permitted at any given time in the Bricker Building will comply with health requirements for a retail only experience, so proper social distancing can be observed. All visitors, exhibitors and staffers will be required to wear masks, with no exceptions. We ask anyone who is not able to wear a mask to not attend, and we look forward to seeing you at the Fall Home & Garden Show or next spring. The show will provide masks for those who don’t have them, and hand-sanitizing stations will be located throughout the Bricker Building and at exhibitor booths, Zonars said. Home & Garden Show visitors also will notice traffic and parking changes. Attendees must enter the fairgrounds gate at 11th Avenue instead of 17th Avenue to avoid the drive-thru COVID-19 vaccination clinic at the Celeste Center. Digital message boards will be set up along Interstate 71 to remind drivers to exit at 11th Avenue for the show, Zonars said. Visitor parking will be located near the giant slide on the fairgrounds, to the south of the Taft Coliseum and east of the Voinovich Center. As attendees approach the entrance to the Bricker Building, signs will encourage social distancing. Staff members

will help people remain 6 feet apart. To support compliance of the Home & Garden Show’s safety plan, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and event staff members will be visible throughout the venue to monitor both attendees and exhibitors. Zonars said the show also will employ strict hourly cleaning protocols. Food will not be available for purchase. The Home & Garden Show worked closely with Lowe’s, a show sponsor, in crafting the health and safety plan, he said. “We feel incredibly fortunate that Lowe’s is one of our partners because they have been operating retail locations safely right through the pandemic,” Zonars said. “Their local managers have shared information about their safe operating practices that work. Thanks to Lowe’s, our safety plan is road-tested. We are using many of the company’s best practices, which gives us confidence in our approach.” Lowe’s, along with major retailers across the country, has worked with local, state and federal agencies to ensure it provides a safe, socially distanced and clean environment for customers, said Brian Aliff, who manages the company’s store at Polaris. “With many Americans spending significantly more time in their homes for work, school and entertainment, it’s been extremely important for Lowe’s to provide the products and services to maintain a safe and enjoyable at-home experience,” he said. “It’s because of this incredible responsibility that we have worked diligently to establish strict guidelines for social distancing, personal protective items and sanitization.” While attendees will notice many changes this year, Zonars said one constant remains: The Home & Garden Show is where they can find more local companies, with the experts who know their stuff, under one roof. “We want to say a big ‘thank you’ to central Ohio in advance of our 65th annual Home & Garden Show, and that we appreciate your patience with the changes for this year,” Zonars said. “We’d love to see you at the show.”
