Celebrate Acupuncture Week with Ohio’s only acupuncture school!

The Diamond Tennis Bracelet story The eighties were great for some things. Legwarmers. Hairspray. Diamond tennis bracelets. But all good things come to an end, and while the legwarmers may enjoy a secret second life on cold winter days, a diamond tennis bracelet is kind of expensive to leave in a jewelry box. That’s where Scott’s Custom Jewelers shines! A customer came to us with this bracelet and wanted to turn it in for scrap. She mentioned that what she really needed was an everyday diamond wedding band. We used our CAD (computer aided design) system and created several diamond ring options, using her gemstones. Next, we made a model of the ring on our 3D printer and had her try it on for size. This is important, because it
eliminates the uncertainty of a custom jewelry design. Finally, we removed her diamonds and cast the ring in our shop. The result was stunning! She was able to get exactly what she wanted for a fraction of the price of new, and reuse an old, out-of-date piece of jewelry, gathering dust in her jewelry box. Custom jewelry at Scott’s Custom Jewelers is about getting a quality piece of jewelry, in the style that you love, and at a price you can afford. Stop by at 6365 Perimeter Drive in the Kroger Plaza or call (614) 336-4111.

Here are tips to prepare your trees and shrubs for winter Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation reccommends these seasonal tips for trees: Water - Adequate soil moisture helps reduce stress and winter injury in trees and shrubs. Pay special attention evergreens, recent transplants (0-2 years) and plants in droughty locations, such as steep banks and under roof eaves. Be sure to apply water slowly and for an extended period of time, allowing penetration deep into the root area. Mulch - A layer of mulch, 2-3 inches deep, conserves soil moisture and moderates soil temperature. Existing mulch should be loosened with a rake because shredded mulch that has become matted can actually block water penetration into the soil below. Make sure there is air space between the mulch and trunk. Do not mound mulch or soil around tree trunks! Trunk protection - Trim back groundcover and low shrubs from the base of small trees to help avoid rodent damage. Wire mesh sleeves around the lower trunk to help prevent chewing damage. Keep the wire 2-3 inches from the trunk.
Deer damage - Commercial taste repellents or fatty acid based soaps (i.e. Ivory) can be effective but must be reapplied frequently. Physical barriers, such as wire or nylon mesh, are the most effective. The best long-term solution is to replace damaged plants with a species that deer do not like. Fertilization - Fall is when most root development takes place and is an important time to fertilize trees and shrubs. Proper plant nutrition is critical for overcoming the effects of stress and reducing cold injury. We offer services for trees of all ages and stages of development to help protect your property and the people who enjoy it! Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation is a family-owned, full service arboricultural firm serving both residential and commercial clients in central Ohio for almost 40 years. More information and resources about pruning and tree care can be found at www.ahlumarbor.com or call (614) 876-5622 to schedule an on-site consultation.
Fall is time for pruning Skilled arborists prefer pruning in the fall and winter when trees are dormant! With no leaves on the tree, the arborist is better able to evaluate its architecture and spot dead or diseased branches. There are several advantages to pruning in the dormant season: • Branch structure is more visible • Less risk of damage to turf and flower beds • Pruning cuts close over more quickly the following year • It is a good time to check for diseases and other damage Periodic pruning can make the difference between a problem tree and a beautiful landscape specimen. Pruning can involve removing deadwood or broken branches, clearing branches from structures or other trees, reducing the density of the canopy, or correcting the form or shape of the tree. Clues such as bud formation and color enable our experienced arborists to distinguish between healthy branches and deadwood.

Dance for every student: Adaptive Dance Program, Wellness Center and Pre-Professional Academy “It’s only a small percentage of the total here, but it’s a program we are proud of. It’s a program which encompasses all we are about here: Dance is for everyone”, owner Teresa Crye explains about the Adaptive Dance Program at Dublin Dance Centre & Gymnastics (DDC&G). For 30 years now, DDC&G has been a studio using dance as a tool for each student’s growth. “Movement in the best interest of children” is DDC&G’s focus since 1984. When Anne Browning came on board, this mission expanded to serve an underserviced population and added Adaptive Dance to the schedule. An Intervention Specialist, former employee of Dublin City Schools and local mom of three girls, Anne developed the Adaptive Dance program with several goals: first, to provide movement education to all students regardless of age and social and/or physical skill sets and to provide the benefits of movement as a part of students IEP’s in conjunction with their academic advisors. Some students need one-on-one instruction, some flourish in dedicated small classes, several students work in a main-stream classroom either with a dedicated helper or, depending on the situation, without; under the guidance and observation of Anne. Teachers, parents and students of DDC&G have experienced a great consideration and deeper understanding of Adaptive Dance students. “Parents often tell me how grateful they are their child was exposed to these special
situations. They say their child learned about compassion and acceptance of people who may seem different,” said Anne. Teresa continues, “The joy seen and felt by those participating in the Adaptive Dance program and those witnessing the student’s accomplishments is equally exceptional to the joy for the DDC&G pre-pro’ student who was finally accepted to study with NYC Ballet.”
MPT on Board, injury prevention and PT access for every student For all students, Dublin Dance Centre & Gymnastics has opened a Wellness Center with Annika Russo, MPT at the head. A former professional ballerina turned physical therapist; Annika understands the needs of young dancers. The Wellness Centre serves students beyond injury; Annika works on technique modification and selfstrengthening for students in addition to integrating exercises within the curriculum as preventative measures for developing bodies. As it has been a long practice at DDC&G, students preparing for pointe work go through an extensive physical process. Using the guidelines of the IADMS (International Association of Dance Medicine and Science), Annika uses the individual screening to check student’s technique, to check for adequacy in the student’s alignment and their strength within the technique, and
observes student’s physical maturity checkpoints. These preventative measures ensure students dancing on pointe do so safely and prevent long-term problems. “Most parents do not realize the stress dancing on pointe puts on a body. It is important they understand all of these physical aspects before allowing their daughters to dance on pointe. There are many long-term consequences if the body is not ready and if the instruction is not properly done,” explains Annika.
Pre-Professional Academy to begin “The resources are here to support [the student’s] professional dreams. Teachers are on staff who know how to and have already successfully guided students in their professional pursuits. They have danced around the world, for exceptional companies, and know what these students need…” explains Teresa. “We will do it the Dublin Dance Centre way — we will remain committed to the holistic balance each student needs… and to supporting their dreams. The Academy will push those students who have identified their desires and reached the level of training it demands. Students can reach that level here — without having to leave their home town and social lives.”
Growing on the foundation of Intensive Level Ballet at DDC&G, the Academy will offer focused day-time ballet and modern training in conjunction with students half day and/or online schooling. The training is starting currently with small group instruction and will formalize for the 2015-2016 school year. Interested students should contact the Education Director for more information: christina@dublindance. com and watch for audition information in January. For more information go to www.dublindance.com or call (614) 761-2882.

ALOHA in Dublin/Lewis Center provides Academic Enrichment programs ALOHA offers math and writing programs with meaningful opportunities for practice and application developing constant learners Aloha in the Hawaiian language means hello, goodbye, affection, love, peace, compassion and mercy, but for us in ALOHA Center @ Netcong, it has another meaning and that is ALOHA = Abacus Learning of Higher Arithmetic. ALOHA is an international child enrichment and brain development program that triggers the usage of both halves of the brain. Mr. Loh Mun Sung in 1993 founded ALOHA Systems by adapting from China and Taiwan and further enhanced it for the purpose of introducing to the children of Malaysia. The tangible process of using ABACUS and the focus on being able to perform complex math problems in mind (mentally with no external tools) work in tandem as a supplemental after school learning program and Reading/Writing Program for ages 5 to 12. An instructorled language program with an emphasis on writing, ALOHA Reading/Writing goes beyond your child’s current school curriculum to foster literacy, providing meaningful opportunities for practice and application. Particular emphasis is placed on phonemic awareness, decoding and reading. ALOHA has expanded their domain in Dublin and Lewis Center, Ohio. This
is a diverse market that actively seeks enhancing educational opportunities and we take great pride in teaching math using Abacus method. In addition, abacus is an excellent tool for teaching other number based systems with fun for children aged 5 through 12. These centers offer students an engaging learning program designed to improve and refine their skills in math. ALOHA Mental Arithmetic helps students become constant learners by developing critical math skills, goal-setting abilities, self-confidence and a love of learning. Each ALOHA Class works with small group of children, offering the highest level of individual attention. ALOHA mental arithmetic is a brain training program used to perform complex arithmetic calculations without the aid of any external calculating device. Mental arithmetic training has been proved to
improve visualization skills, sharpen memory and focusing skills. There are procedures and training methodologies to master abacus use. When children use both hands to move the beads for small and large arithmetic calculations, the quick communication between hands and brain stimulates brain cells, promoting quick, balanced and whole brain development. ALOHA Reading / Writing Program ALOHA Reading/Writing considers your child’s needs, such as grade-level benchmarks or specific objectives set during the initial consultation. Activities: Phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and text comprehension are integral to early literacy development. ALOHA encourages active learning of these skills by combining reading and writing through journaling, reading to classmates, discussing current events and participation in the ALOHA Reward System. Considering academic and social needs, ALOHA instructors provide weekly assessments of student progress and development. Small-group classes ensure that your child receives stepby-step instruction at every turn from qualified and trained teachers. Activities are incorporated into each session that encourages not only reading and writing, but listening, speaking and self-evaluation. Falling leaves present a beautiful safety hazard Watching leaves turn brilliant shades of color and fall from the trees is a favorite activity each fall. Drivers travel near and far to witness spectacular and colorful displays of fall foliage, hoping to catch the peak hues in their respective areas of the country. While falling leaves can be a sight to behold, those leaves can become a nuisance to drivers in various ways. Understanding certain inconveniences and safety risks posed by falling leaves can help motorists protect their vehicle and themselves.
Staining
Leaves can do more than just stain driveways; they also can damage a vehicleÕs paint job. Should wet leaves, sap and other chemicals that leach out of the leaves stay on a car for an extended period of time, they can cause an outline stain and damage to the paint. ItÕs important to manually pick leaves off of the carÕs surface right after they fall. Do not sweep them away; otherwise the leaves can scratch the paint surface. When all the leaves have been removed, thoroughly wash and dry the vehicle. Should stains be present already, use a commercial leaf-stain remover or automotive paint cleaner. Tackle one stain at a time.
Clogging
Leaves that fall can become trapped in air intake vents, eventually impeding flow and causing odors. Leaves that fall in the groove of the windshield by the windshield wipers should be removed. Use a high-powered shop vacuum to remove any leaves that are imbedded in the venting. Check other areas of the car where leaves can become problematic, such as under the vehicle or in the rear exhaust pipe.
Slippery surfaces
The Car Care Council notes that wet leaves on the surface of roadways can be hazardous. Wet leaves can make roadways quite slippery, even as slippery as roadways when snow is falling. Drivers should slow down when roads are covered with wet leaves and take turns and off-ramps more carefully. Dry leaves also can pose problems, as they tend to accumulate at the edges of roads, where they easily can obscure curbs or street markings. Leaves may fill potholes, giving the false impression that a road is smooth and causing damage to tires and suspension systems when drivers drive over them. Autumn leaves may be beautiful to see, but they can complicate driving and fall car care. Motorists should keep their cars clear of leaves and use caution on roadways.

1. I’m planning on buying a new car. How do I go about adding it to my policy? Before you purchase a vehicle, we recommend calling our agency so that we can provide you with a quote for that vehicle. That way, you know what effect it will have on your auto insurance policy before you make the purchase. Even in the case of replacing one vehicle for another, we recommend calling our office beforehand because different vehicles receive different ratings. To add the vehicle to your policy, we will need the year it was made, the vehicle identification number (VIN), current mileage, and any financing information if applicable. 2. How does insurance coverage work if I lend my car to a friend or family member? If you lend a friend or family member your car, you’re also lending that person your insurance coverage. If that person has an at-fault accident, you will be responsible for any deductible to repair your vehicle and it could have a negative effect on your auto insurance rate. 3. How can I make a payment on my policy? Allstate has multiple ways to make a payment for your convenience. A payment can be made in person, by calling our office or 1-800-Allstate, through direct mail, or online. We can also arrange for your payments to be automatically withdrawn for you. price as well as appropriate coverage. In a year, change occurs, so we want to make sure you are protected. Do I need to add him/her to my auto policy? A child does not need to be added as an operator on an auto policy until he or she is issued their driver’s license after the age of 16. During the period that the child only has the learner’s permit, your child is permitted and insured to drive all vehicles on your personal auto policy as long as a parent is present and has given permission to the child to drive the vehicle. 6. Marburn Academy empowers students to excel Marburn Academy was founded on the conviction that bright students who learn differently due to dyslexia or ADHD deserve a school where the teaching methods empower them to excel in academics, as well as in personal achievement. Marburn has been widely recognized for the unrivaled capacity of its elementary and middle school programs to remediate the reading, writing, spelling and math deficits that ADHD and dyslexic students accumulate as they struggle to learn from traditional teaching methods that don’t work for them. For example, students who have been gaining less than half a year of reading skill for every year they have been in school typically triple that rate of gain once they enroll at Marburn. Ten years ago, Marburn began a high school program committed to preparing students with learning differences for successful college careers. Federal studies show that 35% of U.S. high school students with dyslexia or ADHD drop out before graduating. Of the 65% who do graduate, only about 11% even attempt college and only 2% attain a degree. In contrast, over 95% of Marburn’s graduates are accepted into college with the remainder entering such rigorous professional training programs as EMT certification. In addition to an intellectually
challenging and engaging academic curriculum, the high school includes one class per day that helps students internalize the planning, organization, study skills, and goal- oriented work ethic they will need to succeed in college and career. Marburn’s one-toone laptop program is the foundation for a technologically advanced curriculum that includes innovative science, math and engineering courses that grant college credit, as well as four competitive robotics teams. Rounding out the program with offerings in the arts, athletics and other affinity areas, Marburn’s high school provides an education designed to cultivate the highest qualities of mind, of character, and of responsible citizenship in the community and the world.

Home Savings adds the personal touch to mortgage lending
By Deb Herman Home Savings Advertising Director
Shopping for a home mortgage can be confusing. Most banks have very similar rates and fees, so what should you look for when choosing a mortgage lender? “Look for a real person, someone you can connect with,” said Rick Baylor, Area Sales Manager for Home Savings & Loan. “A lot of banks today don’t even offer you a personal meeting, just a phone call or email contact. That’s what makes Home Savings so special,” he explained. Home Savings has been in this market for about 10 years with a mortgage office in Worthington, initially working mostly with builders and their clients. “But now we’re growing more into the consumer market, focusing on reaching out to individuals looking for a mortgage that’s not only competitively priced, but also competently managed by an experienced loan officer with a personal touch,” said Baylor. The bank’s loan officers will meet with customers at their convenience … evenings, weekends, whenever and wherever is good for the customer. “Like most other banks, Home Savings offers the convenience of applying online, but if you want to meet with a loan officer that option is always open,” said Baylor. Of course Home Savings offers loans for purchases and refinances, but the bank does offer a couple of programs that are unique. The bank has a construction/permanent mortgage product that allows for one loan
closing; the construction loan converts to a regular mortgage upon completion of the home. “We have discovered that our program is somewhat unique; not too many banks offer construction/ perm loans now,” Baylor explained. “And, qualified applicants can get a really low down payment, lower than most other mortgage loans.” Home Savings has a special FirstTime Buyers Program, too. The program offers low down payments (which can be gifted to the borrower), no mortgage insurance costs and no income restrictions. “This program makes it affordable for someone who’s still renting to become a homeowner,” said Baylor. As far as offering that personal touch … there are two experienced loan officers serving residents of this area. Todd Primmer and Linda Tempesta can be reached at Home Savings’ Worthington office via phone or email, or through the bank’s web site. Dublin is named a World Festival & Event City Dublin, Ohio, USA has once again been recognized as a World Festival & Event City by the International Festivals & Events Association. The award, judged by an international panel of festival and event industry experts, recognizes the best in community leadership, and festival and event partnerships around the world. This is an award that is shared by everyone in the community for their contributions in making Dublin a great host city. From the Memorial Tournament, which hosts one of the premiere events on the PGA Tour; to the Dublin Convention & Visitors Bureau who landed Football University’s Top Gun Football Camp representing the City’s largest event in 2014 and the Dublin Arts Council, whose year-round visual and performing arts attract more interest in our community; to the thousands of volunteers who help the City present special events like the Dublin Irish Festival; it takes a collaborative effort to ensure a quality experience for residents and guests alike. The eyes of the world were on Dublin in 2013 as The Presidents Cup came to town to play on Jack Nicklaus’ worldclass course at Muirfield Village Golf Club. As a result, Dublin became the only city in the world to host a Presidents Cup, Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup. Using The Presidents Cup 2013 as the motivator for new programs, enhanced regional partnerships and introduction of customer services programs focused on the festival, event and tourism industry, the City of Dublin and the Dublin Convention and Visitors Bureau participated in the national Certified Tourism Ambassador™ Program in Greater Columbus. What’s more, as a trail blazer, we established the first ever suburban community component in cooperation with Experience Columbus. Visitors from all continents witnessed first-hand what our residents and corporate citizens have come to know about our city. It’s why the readers of Columbus Monthly magazine have voted Dublin the Best Suburb in Central Ohio and the Dublin Irish Festival as the Best Festival in Central Ohio. It’s also the reason Dublin was named an IFEA World Festival & Event City in 2012 – with the judges selecting Dublin as the Most Outstanding Global Entry in our population category. One of the reasons our community thrives in the festival and event industry is because of the overall strength of our community as well as the Columbus Region. Here are just a few of our recent achievements: • NeighborhoodScout recognized Dublin as one of the Top 100 Safest Cities in America. • Dublin was acknowledged as a Bicycle Friendly City by the League of American Bicyclists. • All three high schools have been named to Newsweek’s list of the top high schools in the country. • The Intelligent Community Forum honored Dublin as one of the Top Seven Intelligent Communities in the world – twice! • Fox Business News proclaimed Dublin the No. 1 city in the country in which to start a business.
• BusinessWeek Online cited Dublin as the best small city in Ohio for startups. • Movoto.com named Dublin The Happiest Suburb in America. We take great pride in these achievements, but perhaps none speak more highly of our community than our residents declaring Dublin the Best Place to Live as part of the National Citizen Survey. These accolades provide us with added incentives to achieve our mission: to preserve and enhance the unique high quality of life offered to those who live or work in our community by providing the vision, leadership and performance standards, which allow for managed growth and development with an emphasis on quality and innovation. One example of adhering to this mission is on the horizon -- the Bridge Street District, which will be a dynamic mix of land uses and housing integrated with the natural environment, including the Scioto River. The plan envisions a vibrant and walkable center of the City reinforcing Dublin’s long-term fiscal health and sustainability and promoting economic development competitiveness and market-driven adaptability. Distinctive architecture, streets that invite walking and destinations that emphasize connectivity will attract a new generation of residents, businesses and visitors. We are able to implement these forward-thinking plans as a result of Dublin’s diverse and sound economic base, which provides the foundation for the present and future stability of the City. The City’s continued economic vitality is the result of quality development, strategic planning and aggressive efforts to attract and retain high-quality commercial development. Dublin’s largest source of funding is income tax revenues. Our healthy tax base provides
the resources necessary to keep pace with growth and underwrite the high quality of life enjoyed by our corporate and residential citizens. Dublin’s financial stewardship has earned the City the highest available bond ratings – Aaa from Moody’s Investors Service and AAA from Fitch Ratings – a distinction carried by approximately 3 percent of rated cities nationwide. These ratings further reflect the cooperative efforts of private citizens, civic leaders, government officials and business representatives. The City of Dublin Hotel/Motel Tax Fund was established to improve the quality of life for residents, corporate citizens and visitors. Dublin generates funds from a six percent tax on overnight hotel stays. This revenue is invested back into the community through designated projects and special events that enhance visitor appeal and encourage overnight stays. The Dublin Convention & Visitors Bureau and Dublin Arts Council each receive 25 percent of the annual revenues generated by the hotel/motel tax. The DCVB has helped attract groups to Dublin, which shine an international spotlight, including the United States Australian Football League National Championships, which will take place Oct. 11 and 12. Among the cultural offerings on tap for the Dublin Arts Council is “Eddie Adams: Vietnam,” a multimedia exhibition featuring 50 photographs by the Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist; along with the documentary, “An Unlikely Weapon: The Eddie Adams Story” by Morgan Cooper; and a video feedback booth. The exhibit, which will be presented at the Dublin Arts Center May 25 through Sept. 11, 2015, will provide an opportunity to honor Dublin veterans and share educational opportunities,
while attracting more visitors to our community. We welcome visitors to witness the attributes of Dublin, including our strong business community, entrepreneurial spirit and signature events like the Dublin Irish Festival and the Memorial Tournament. Our schools have developed athletic facilities that are used year-round for local, regional and international tournaments, and feature performing arts centers, which rival entertainment venues in many metropolitan communities. Our 1,200 acres of parkland have allowed us to create green spaces conducive to community ceremonies as well as grand international events. And, when it comes to sporting events, the combination of City, school and private facilities – with nighttime lighting, permanent seating and abundant parking – creates venues that can host thousands of participants and spectators on any given day. Dublin offers a wide variety of restaurants, conveniently located shopping centers and 14 hotels with more than 2,000 rooms and suites. Additionally, we have outstanding public recreational amenities, including two outdoor swimming pools; a state-ofthe-art recreation facility; more than 100 miles of bike paths; and 56 parks featuring a variety of amenities. Our revitalized Historic District, which is being transformed into a highly walkable, urban district, will offer greatly expanded options in housing, employment, transportation and entertainment. When all of these vibrant elements are woven together, they make a City not just a place to live, but a place to celebrate. We invite you to learn more about Dublin as a festival and event destination by visiting http://dublinohiousa. gov/ifea-2014/City-of-Dublin-IFEA2014-Final.pdf

It all officially started in 1999 in Dublin, Ohio when an award-winning barbeque competition team put their closely guarded recipes and techniques together and founded City Barbeque. By the end of this year, the company will have grown to 23 locations in four states, with their core focus of competition quality and backyard hospitality never wavering. Competition quality is a standard, meaning their award-winning barbeque is made with only the highest quality meats and served with City Barbeque signature sauce on the side. Huge smokers are loaded daily to guarantee the very best hickory smoked, juicy, tender meat anywhere. House made
sides and desserts like mac and cheese, corn pudding and warm peach cobbler are the finishing touches for a complete down home meal. The only thing loved by the City more than barbeque is community and being able to give back to those who need it most. Holding an in-store fundraiser kicks back 25% to the hosting organization and as a company City Barbeque gives back 10% of pre-tax profit to charities annually. So if an authentic barbeque experience is what you’re after, look no further than City Barbeque. Small groups of folks still believe in honoring quality, generations of tradition and true service. Proud to call Dublin home.

Residents, families happy with Willow Brook
Willow Brook Christian Communities’ healthcare centers are among the best, according to the Ohio Department of Aging’s latest resident satisfaction surveys. The DOA surveyed 953 skilled nursing facilities and 598 assisted living communities and asked two key questions: • Overall, do you like this facility? and • Would you recommend this facility to a family member or friend? Willow Brook Christian Home, on Lazelle Road was in the top 25 for the second year in a row, with 100 percent agreement from the residents that they would recommend it to a family member or a friend, and 96.7 percent who liked where they lived. Exercise benefits the brain, too Regular exercise can benefit the body in many ways, helping men and women maintain healthier weights and lower their risks for developing potentially deadly diseases. Though many people are quick to associate exercise with its physical benefits, those hours spent on the treadmill also can boost brain power. According to Dr. Barry Gordon, professor of neurology and cognitive science at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and coauthor of “Intelligent Memory: Improve the Memory That Makes You Smarter,” exercise has a direct impact on the brain. That’s because exercise works directly on brain tissue, improving the connections between nerve cells, creating new synapses, growing new neurons and blood vessels, and improving cell energy efficiency. So while many people may begin an exercise regimen with a goal of trimming their waistlines or toning their bodies, they might be happy to know that those physical benefits are accompanied by several cognitive benefits as well. As the American Psychological Association acknowledges, the connection between exercise and mental health is hard to ignore, and the APA notes that the following are just a few of the mental benefits men and women might reap from regular exercise.
Improved mood
Many people feel great after exercising, especially if that exercise comes at the end of a particularly stressful day. However, those extra laps on the track or those hours spent on the treadmill don’t just pay short-term dividends. In a controlled trial overseen by Duke University researcher and clinical psychologist James Blumenthal, sedentary adults with major depressive disorder were assigned into one of four groups: supervised exercise, home-based exercise, antidepressant therapy, or a placebo pill. Those in the exercise and antidepressant groups had higher rates of remission than those in the placebo group, and Blumenthal concluded that exercise was generally comparable to antidepressants for men and women
with major depressive disorder. In addition, in following up with patients a year later, Blumenthal found that those who continued to exercise had lower depression scores than those participants who were less active. Blumenthal’s study was not the only one to conclude that exercise can have a positive impact on mood. In a review of 11 studies that examined the effects of exercise on mental health, Boston University professor of psychology Michael Otto and his colleagues found that exercise could be a powerful tool when treating clinical depression, and even recommended clinicians include exercise as part of their treatment plans for depressed patients.
Antidote to anxiety
Some researchers, Otto included, have begun to examine the effects of exercise on treating and possibly preventing anxiety. The body’s nervous system responds quickly when people feel frightened or threatened, often causing the body’s heart rate to increase and sweating and dizziness to occur. Those people who are especially sensitive to anxiety respond to these feelings with fear, and that makes them more likely to develop panic disorders. But Otto and fellow researcher Jasper Smits of the Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University studied the effects that regular workouts might have on people prone to anxiety. Since exercise produces many of the same physical reactions, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, the body produces when responding to fear or threats, Otto and Smits wanted to determine if exercise might help people prone to anxiety become less likely to panic when experiencing fear or threats. In studying 60 participants with heightened sensitivity to anxiety, Otto and Smits found that the subjects who participated in a two-week exercise program exhibited marked improvements in anxiety sensitivity compared to those participants who did not take part in the exercise program. Otto and Smith concluded that this improvement was a result of
the exercise group participants learning to associate the symptoms common to both fear and exercise, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, with something positive (exercise) instead of something negative (anxiety).
Regular exercise benefits the human body in numerous ways, not the least of which is its impact on the brain. More information on the link between exercise and improved mental health is available at www.apa.org.
The nutritive power of apples Who has not heard the old adage, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”? It may seem unlikely that one fruit could be so effective at maintaining good health, but apples really are a super food. Apples are a member of the Rose family and are related to pears, peaches, apricots and plums. Though considered a fall fruit, apples can be enjoyed year-round thanks to commercial food production and importing. Apart from being sweet, sometimes sour and refreshingly crisp, apples pack a number of nutritional benefits. Research has shown that apples can help to reduce a person’s risk of heart disease and help those with diabetes. In addition, apples can help fight cancer and prevent dental problems. According to new information from long-running studies published in the British Medical Journal, eating at least two servings a week of whole fruit, particularly apples, blueberries or grapes, reduces a person’s risk for type 2 diabetes by around 23 percent. Apples are high in many antioxidants and, as a result, this makes them especially valuable at fighting illness. For ex-

Apples also are very high in fiber. Fiber is needed to help a person feel
full and can also regulate digestive function. Fiber also can help reduce cholesterol by preventing the buildup of cholesterol-causing plaques in the blood vessels, improving cardiovascular function and possibly reducing risk
of a stroke as a result. In addition to working their magic inside of the body, apples can have a noticeable impact on physical appearance as well. Apples are sometimes referred to as “nature’s toothbrushes” because they can brighten and clean the teeth. The crisp, abrasive texture stimulates the gums and removes debris from the teeth. What’s more, the natural mild acidity of apples helps to stimulate saliva production that can rinse away germs that lead to plaque. An apple weighs in at under 100 calories per serving, making them a low-fat and ideal snack any time of the day. Because they are low in calories and full of fiber, apples can help men and women maintain a healthy weight. Because apples can be plagued by insects and parasites, some growers repeatedly spray the trees with pesticides. It is adviseable to buy organic apples to avoid many of the pesticide dangers and to be able to safely eat the apples raw. There are more than 7,000 varieties of apples on the market today. With such variety, availability and health benefits, apples make a convenient and nutritious snack.
