t is perfect—all of it. The cushy chocolate leather chairs in the main cabin. The working searchlight from an old ship artfully hung to illuminate the game table in the guest house. The white dinnerware meticulously arranged with votives and fresh flowers on the outdoor dining table. Exploring Monique Keegan’s weekend retreat (for the Décor feature in this issue) was like stepping into a picture book. There’s no question why the fashion-designer-turnedinterior-designer has made a name for herself not just in Central Ohio, but nationally as well. The charming getaway that she shares with her husband and 12-year-old son just outside of Granville is a sophisticated mix of simple elegance and intriguing surprise. Every last bit of anything is purposeful—no single vase, collected pinecone or pair of boots out of place. But any sense of pretense disappeared between the main cabin and guest house, as, while we walked and chatted, Keegan started bending over to grab pieces of blue latex. “Water balloon fight,” she said, smiling. The mental image of people launching water-filled balloons at each other in the middle this pristine-to-the-nth-degree property still makes me grin. It’s such a good reminder that in life—smack dab in the center of the perfection we are constantly striving to create—we need to occasionally stop and enjoy. Just like runners, women tend to strive for no wasted motion. Runners, you see, consistently refine their movements so as not to waste any. Don’t lift your knees too high; don’t swing your arms too far. No wasted motion—that’s the goal. Don’t we do that in life, too? Don’t we pride ourselves on figuring out how to find that 25th hour in the day? We grab lunch at 1 p.m. instead of noon to save the four minutes in line; continue conducting business on our cell phones while racing home from work; pick up dry cleaning; taxi kids;

22

toss in laundry; change clothes; get to soccer game; check BlackBerry; start dinner; fold laundry; confirm Saturday’s plans; hop on computer; eat dinner; thank God for a husband who washes dishes; zip to the grocery; serve snacks; pack kids’ lunches; kiss everyone goodnight and—whew—start again. (We may also have watched Dancing with the Stars amid the chaos. And perhaps ogled over a pair of Stuart Weitzman shoes online. But that was for just a moment, right?) The point is, we sometimes get so caught up in orchestrating it all that we forget why we’re orchestrating it all. We need to remind ourselves to slow down. To have fun. (I also need to remind myself that nobody will ever hand me a golden trophy for never allowing a piece of clothing to be dirty for longer than 24 hours. But I digress.) Let’s face it: We can toil endlessly to make our own expanses in life picture-perfect, but if we can’t occasionally run around in our bare feet launching water balloons like giddy children, what’s the point? So, as you flip through these pages, be inspired by the beautiful photos of Monique Keegan’s home. But remember that the most important things are the broken pieces of latex you cannot see. And make time in your life—in the middle of everything beautiful you rightfully work so tirelessly to build—to stop, set down the BlackBerry, skip the laundry and throw some blue balloons.

The Exhibit Includes: Hundreds of authentic artifacts! Stunning room recreations! Costume characters from the fateful voyage!

Bowler Hat

Gimbal Lamp

The Bowler hat was invented in 1850 as a type of hard hat for gamekeepers on large estates. By 1912, the bowler hat had been transformed into an essential element of dress for men from all walks of life. The felt bowler was one of the most fashionable styles then and has retained its popularity. This bowler bat was recovered in 1993.

A weighted pivot ensured that this silver lamp would remain upright in all weather. For those passengers who wished to red in bed, an eye cast into the base of the lamp allowed for convenient placement upon a hook on the wall. This gimbal lamp, recovered in 1987,

has never been seen by the public before now.

Wall Telephone At 11:40pm, lookout Frederick Fleet strikes the Titanic’s bell three times and then calls the bridge. Office Moody answers the call asking, “Yes—what have you seen?” “Iceberg right ahead.” Moody simply says,“Thank you,” and hangs up.

This particular wall telephone was recovered in 1987.

Binoculars

Without the aid of the Crow’s Nest binoculars, misplaced during the voyage, Titanic’s lookouts strained to see signs of danger in the moonless night. At 11:35pm, a slight haze creeps across the horizon. A few minutes later, lookout Fredrick Fleet sees a dark mass looming before the ship. A giant iceberg lies directly in Titanic’s path. This pair of binoculars,

recovered in 1994, most likely belonged to a passenger.

Trendsetter Once ranked the 17th most powerful woman in the world, CHRISTINE POON has ditched retirement plans to run Ohio State’s business school Story by: KRISTY ECKERT I Photos by: WILL SHILLING

S

he consistently earned her way onto the Forbes magazine list of 100 Most Powerful Women, heralded with the likes of Hillary Clinton and Sandra Day O’Connor—and at one point, well above Oprah and Queen Elizabeth II. Yet Christine Poon, the vice chairman and worldwide chairman of pharmaceuticals at Johnson & Johnson, would nonetheless sit and unassumingly read on the train ride into work. The world’s highest-ranking woman in the pharmaceutical industry parked her car at the station instead of in the company garage with the executives who worked under her. “No one would ever say, ‘OK, this is one of the most high-powered women executives in America, riding the train like everyone else,’ ” said Jose “Zito” Sartarelli, Johnson & Johnson’s company group chairman for pharmaceuticals in Asia-Pacific, Japan and Latin America. “Executives tend to congregate up. … She didn’t have a need for that. Very independent, very approachable, very special in

that respect. Very unique.” And now, she’s very uniquely Central Ohio’s. Ohio State University, and specifically President E. Gordon Gee, convinced Poon, 57, to forego her planned retirement and instead take the reins of the Fisher College of Business. Less than a year into her tenure, she’s already creating a one-of-a-kind collaboration program teaming Fisher with local businesses, and she’s dreaming up plans to seek technologies or inventions from other colleges at Ohio State that Fisher students could commercialize. As she recently sat in her sunny campus office, Poon, a minority woman who forged her way through a white man’s world during an era of smokefilled boardrooms, thoughtfully measured her comments, whether about her recent weekend getaway to Colorado or her venture into academia. It’s almost as if one can see her think, as if no word will be wasted. “For me, every day is sort of a thrill,” Poon said. “I never thought I could find something to do that was more rewarding than the first 30 years of my life. But I suspect this

A WOMAN’S WORLD

When Christine Poon’s career began, she was typically the only woman in business meetings—something she’s happy has changed. “I’ve gone from the time a meeting would be smoke-filled when you were done … to a place where it’s rare to be the only woman in the room,” she said. But why, she asked, does Forbes need a list naming the most powerful women? “We ought to hope for the time we don’t need a separate list for women,” she said. “Because that will mean it’s not just representation in numbers.”

could rise to that magnitude.” Gee was delighted to score such a coup. Universities are littered with people from the business world who think they understand how to act in an educational institution, he said. But Poon—who introduces herself as Chris and offers to hang the coats of guests who enter her office—listens as she leads, and has earned respect for doing so. “She’s just not an ostentatious or a bloated person in any sense of the word,” Gee said. “She has the respect of her colleagues. She has the respect of our students. And she’s interacting very well with our external community.” Plus, he noted, there’s the fame factor: “She brings enormous experience and star power.” Poon worked her way to worldwide respect (she hit 17 on the Forbes list in 2004) using an arsenal of talents—raw smarts, an insatiable appetite for knowledge, a tireless work ethic and what longtime colleague Sartarelli calls “emotional intelligence.” She honed those skills from an early age growing up near Cincinnati, where her parents—both first-generation Chinese-Americans—had high expectations for Poon and her six siblings. Once, in elementary school, Poon brought home a report card with C’s, excitedly showing them off, thinking that average was exactly what one should aim to be. Her father, an Army veteran and ophthalmologist, reviewed her grades and made one simple statement. “B’s,” he said, “are

better.” Average, a young Poon quickly realized, is never the goal. Poon was learning lessons in leadership and compassion, too. As the second oldest of seven, she embraced her role as a leader, said her youngest sister, Jeanette Caruso. And as a minority, she figured out how to find her spot among other children, while developing what has become a lifelong willingness to understand others’ points of view. “She grew up in a place where I think she was the only Chinese girl in her class in grade school, and that means you have to find a way to fit in,” said her husband, Michael Tweedle. “There’s a barrier for you to overcome so that people both like and respect you.” Following in her doctor father’s footsteps, Poon earned her degree in pre-med from Northwestern University. But instead of applying to medical schools (“Organic chemistry just mystified me,” she laughs), she enrolled in graduate school at Saint Louis University to study biology and biochemistry. Soon, with another degree in hand, she packed all she owned into a Toyota Corolla and drove to Boston to work as a lab researcher for New England Nuclear, a young biotech company. Never mentally satisfied— and without having taken a single business class for her first two degrees—Poon began MBA courses part-time at Boston University. She finished the program with a finance concentration, and her company transitioned her from the lab to the office. Poon also found more than a passion for business there— she found her husband. But he echoed others’ sentiments that her emotional sensibilities are equally as stellar. “She’s very sensitive to other human beings, and she’s a good listener,” he said. Watch her at a dinner party, he suggested—she’ll be as comfortable talking with people at one end of the political spectrum as the other. “I think it’s just a matter of wanting to understand other people’s point of view,” he said. “She still has her own point of view, and it’s not likely to change unless she gets new data. But I think it comes from an openness and a desire to understand where other people are coming from and what’s important to them.” Poon’s rare knowledge of both science and business, paired with the other attributes she long cultivated, propelled her to a job with biopharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb. She climbed until she was running all of the company’s international companies. Eventually, she was snagged by Johnson & Johnson, the world’s largest medical devices company, which runs more than 250 operating companies

WE’VE STRUCK GOLD

After Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee convinced Christine Poon to forgo her planned retirement and instead come to Ohio State, he discovered she had a husband who was also interested in a job at the university. According to Poon’s comical version of the story, Gee rolled his eyes and asked for a resume. Then, he realized her husband is Michael Tweedle—a rock star in the science world who, among many achievements, invented a product used in MRI imaging. “Now we have to find a job for Mike Tweedle’s wife!” Gee proclaimed. His version is a bit different. “As soon as I saw his name,” Gee recalled, “I said, ‘We have struck gold.’ ” Tweedle is now working as a professor teaching radiology, and he is the Stefanie Spielman Chair in Cancer Imaging for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for breast cancer research. Poon and Tweedle have been married 27 years (five if you count actual nights spent together, Poon jokes). The couple lives in Bexley.

in 57 countries and creates everything from drugs to lotions. She earned a reputation as an inspirational leader with a brilliant mind who genuinely cared for others, never losing herself in her role, Sartarelli said. She would engage in high-level strategy discussions about China, he noted, and then delve into the specifics of how the company was assuring that patients using their products were getting the support they needed. “The endearing side of success is when you get your hands dirty,” he said. “Then they embrace you as a leader.” Poon insists that being that high-level leader was not a goal she consistently worked toward. “For me, it was never about, ‘I have to be the CEO’ or ‘I have to be the vice president’,” she said. She aimed instead to be challenged, helpful, progressing. It’s not surprising, then, that when asked what she is most proud of in her career, she doesn’t talk about job titles or Forbes rankings. She talks about watching the success of employees she mentored. She talks about how 50-percent fewer people are dying of cardiovascular disease than when she first began in the industry. She talks about how she visited HIV clinics when there was no hope of survival and about how now, most people with the disease are living—and living well—for years. She talks about how products her companies have made have alleviated pain and allowed patients to see a child born or a daughter married. “If you can measure your success in millions of lives saved,” she said, “you should rest easy.” That is, if she ever lets herself rest. Since retirement has been put indefinitely on hold, Poon isn’t getting the relaxation she had at first envisioned. But this, she

believes, is better. She is just a drive away from egg roll Sunday with her sister, and close enough to retrieve her nephews for weekends of Buckeye football or Blue Jackets hockey. While she’s still working fulltime hours, she’s based at home, not globetrotting for significant stretches. And though it’s difficult squeezing it in, she and her husband are finding weekends to spend at their vacation home in Colorado, where they ski and golf. Next up? Poon hopes to take a few language courses at Ohio State so that she can converse with her parents in Cantonese. That certainly won’t surprise her youngest sister, who, despite a 15-year age gap, is particularly close with Poon. She’s proud of her sister’s achievements, sure. But it’s difficult for her to see Poon as anything but the older sister she admired—and the aunt her sons adore. She recalled once walking into her basement and finding Poon in a huge cardboard box with a gaggle of nieces and nephews running around her, laughing. “She’s almost like a kid to them. When I ask, ‘Who do you want to invite to your birthday party?’ She’s always one of them,” Caruso said. “Like she’s one of their friends.” So it goes that one of the world’s most powerful women, who is now training the next generation of business leaders, plays in discarded refrigerator boxes with the same self-assurance she had when unassumingly riding that train. And the best part might be that Christine Poon doesn’t care who knows. “The most important thing you can be in the work world is just to be yourself,” Poon said. “Celebrate the fact you are different—and make the difference count.”

MAKING

CRYSTAL BOYCE was told she would never be a dancer. Now she owns a successful studio and mentors the young women who adore her Story by: HOLLY ZACHARIAH Photos by: WILL SHILLING

hen she was just a little girl, Crystal Boyce wanted to be a ballerina. She twirled in her bedroom when no one was looking, she danced down the streets of her family’s Linden neighborhood while all the other kids played ball. She fantasized about the lights and dreamed of the stage. She wanted Broadway. But others told her it would never happen. Instructors said she was too tall, out of proportion, that her shape was all wrong. She simply didn’t fit the mold. “I was maybe 15, 16 years old, and to hear that was devastating,” Boyce said. “I was 5 foot 7 and 120 pounds, and they said I was too fat. I was trying not to eat and wearing plastic pants and running miles every day. I was killing myself. “I swore right then I would never tell another dancer that she didn’t have the look.” The criticism didn’t stop her. It drove her. Today, Boyce is a successful dancer, instructor and the owner of Leap of Faith dance studio in the King-Lincoln District and Leap of Faith Dancewear Boutique in the shops at the Lincoln Theatre. She’s also a community volunteer and runs the dance ministry at St. Paul A.M.E. Church. The role the 44-year-old treasures most, however, is that of wife and mother of two. And she pulls all this off with a natural grace under what can sometimes be the cold and unkind spotlight of politics: She is married to former Columbus City Councilman Kevin L. Boyce, who now is Ohio’s treasurer. Crystal Boyce and her two brothers May/June 2010 CAPITAL-STYLE.COM

Leading Ladies WORDS TO LIVE BY CRYSTAL BOYCE’S BEST ADVICE ON BEING A WIFE: “You have to love all of your spouse, the good and the bad. And know it won’t always be 50/50. Sometimes it will 70/30, sometimes 80/20, and that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.”

ON BEING A MOTHER:

“Love your kids unconditionally and remember—they are just kids. We put so much pressure on them, expect so much. Mine? I want them to be kids as long as they can be.”

ON BEING A STRONG, SUCCESSFUL WOMAN:

“Have a passion for life, a passion for what’s important. There will always be mountains and valleys, but you have to know they are just mountains—that they just pop up, and with will and smarts and determination you can get over or around them.” spent the bulk of their childhoods on E. 25th Street. Peggy Porter took her children to plays, concerts and symphonies every chance she got, to expose them to what went on beyond the borders of a notalways-gentle neighborhood. And she did all this on a secretary’s wage. “We didn’t have a lot, but my mother found free things to take us to, or she volunteered for community theater just so we could all be a part of it,” Boyce said. “She wanted to open our eyes to opportunity.” After graduating from the Fort Hayes School of Performing Arts, studying at Ohio State and embarking on her own careers in both the political and corporate worlds, Boyce opened Leap of Faith on East Long Street in 2004. Then, last November, she added her dancewear boutique just up the street. Her ideas have been vital to the rebirth of the neighborhood and the renovation of the Lincoln Theatre, said William Conner,

SALAD DAYS Crystal and Kevin Boyce married in August 1997 after a courtship they managed to keep secret at the Statehouse. It was no easy task; their offices were next to one another when she worked for then Ohio Rep. Charleta Tavares and Kevin worked for then Ohio Rep. Jack Ford. Their first date was dinner at the now-defunct Christopher’s, located at the top of the Vern Riffe building. “It was fancy schmancy, and the salad tasted like weeds,” Crystal recalled. “We laughed and laughed. Something just connected for us, and we were inseparable from that moment on.” “I knew by the end of the meal we’d both rather be somewhere having chicken wings,” Kevin said. “There was nothing about her that wasn’t amazing.” 52

president and CEO of the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts. CAPA and Leap of Faith have a longstanding partnership for public performances, and no one should ever doubt that Boyce runs the show, Conner said. “I do whatever she tells me,” he said with a laugh. But he wasn’t really joking. “That’s what happens. People see her ambition and her drive, and they just naturally want to do whatever they can to help her.” Publicly, he said, Boyce is the consummate professional. But there is a side she keeps very private. “I cannot count the dancers she had mentored. They can’t pay tuition? She takes them anyway. She pays to send them to workshops, she makes professional contacts and uses her own resources to build them a foundation and get them on their way,” Conner said. “Dance is critically important to our culture, and what she does is demonstrate that anyone,

no matter who they are or how they look, should be allowed to dance.” Boyce isn’t used to talking about herself and, between bites of an apple and sips of her protein water, it’s clear she’s quite uncomfortable with it; it’s her husband who is generally in the spotlight. The two are madly in love, their devotion to one another and to their family clear. Though she and Kevin live high-profile lives and keep demanding schedules, they work hard to keep 11-year-old Kevin Jr. (K.J.) and 7-year-old Kristopher grounded. K.J. takes out the trash, and Kristopher Swiffers the floor every night after dinner. Half of every bit of money the boys receive as gifts or earn—even if it’s just a dollar from a neighbor grateful for help with a chore—goes to Dad for the college fund. I think—and I really believe this in my heart—that if someone offered her $10 million to make her life easier right now, she wouldn’t trade her current life and her experiences for all the riches in the world.” Boyce packs her sons’ lunches and takes them to school, and then picks them up each day. She shares carpool duties for soccer, basketball and whatever else comes along. Her husband, however, says she’s not without faults: “She refuses to put the toothpaste cap back on, and it drives me crazy. It’s awful. I can’t stand it.” But he’s learned to live with it. His wife believes the toothpaste cap is a tradeoff, payback for the fact that Kevin leaves a trail through the house each night—shoes, socks, jacket, tie, shirt, paperwork—as if he might need to follow it to get back to the door. “Oh, don’t even get me started,” she said. Boyce spends her evenings and all day every Saturday teaching at the studio. Among her students are Juilliard hopefuls and Broadway dreamers, plenty of girls with stars in their eyes. (She has boys and men in her classes, but they are much fewer in number.) She teaches them to dance, yes. But when it comes to mentoring the girls, it really is about so much more. “A lot of my kids will never be professional dancers,” she said. “But they will be women. Strong and confident women, I hope. This is about teaching

them to be bold, to be strong and brave and courageous and to never let anything get the best of them.” The girls who take her classes are from a kaleidoscopic swath of society. She has doctors’ daughters and lawyers’ kids, girls hoping for Harvard and girls who may not make it through high school. She has students with parents in jail, students who will have nothing to eat when they go home and students who have no one but Boyce to ask them how they did on that science exam. “I’m not their parent, and I

don’t step over that line. But if the need is there, I make them accountable,” Boyce said. “If they’re having trouble in school, I say bring me your notes. If their grades are bad, I say bring me your tests. I know I can’t save them all. But I believe in the power of prayer. So even if I can’t save them alone, I pray and leave it in God’s hands.” Each class begins and ends with prayer and a time to share. “She gives us a safe environment,” said Kristiauna Trelay, a 26-year-old banker and a member of the The Crewzers,

the Columbus Crew’s dance team. She has taken classes at Leap of Faith over the years, and now teaches there. “We might start a class by talking about the world, like what happened in Haiti, and how we can help. Or we might start a class by talking about who got stood up on their date last night and how that made them feel,” she said. “With Miss Crystal, it’s like girl talk, you know. Nothing is off limits with her.” The students feed on Boyce’s stories, off her experiences. For she did indeed make it to New York. She made it to just

one dancers’ call. “I saw all of these people there, a thousand of them just like me, and they were clawing to get noticed and scraping to get by, and some of them had been doing that for years,” she recalled. “It wasn’t for me. I knew then I’d someday open a studio and give dancers some options.” She stayed about five weeks. When she returned to Columbus, her mother was waiting. It was Mrs. Porter, after all, who enrolled her daughter in ballet at the tender age of five. Back then, though, it had nothing to do with pursuing dreams. “Crystal is an awesome dancer, but she can’t walk. Never has been able to. She still today trips over her own feet. It’s the funniest thing,” said Porter, a secretary at University Hospital East. “I put her in dance because all the

CAPITAL-STYLE.COM May/June 2010

other little girls were doing it, and I thought maybe it would give her some coordination.” It didn’t take long for her daughter to blossom. But it wasn’t always easy, she knows. Boyce was often the only black girl in dance class, and she wondered why she had so few instructors who looked like her. And, her mother says, Crystal took the criticism of her dancer’s body to heart. “I told her not to mind what anybody said. I told her you can be anything you want to be, no matter what your size, no matter what your shape. You just use your mind and you’ll see.” When Boyce finally did get an African-American instructor, they instantly bonded. Gail White-Dixon choreographed Boyce as a teenager, and the two remain best friends. “I saw something special in

her,” said White-Dixon, a fourthgrade teacher at a Columbus charter school. “Now, I take classes from her. I love to be at the studio and watch her with her students. They just soak up the passion and power with which she dances, and I can see it—literally see it—changing their attitude. They watch her dance and think, ‘I can be like that, too.’ ” It is here, at Leap of Faith, where Boyce has found her purpose. Central Ohio woman leads weekend bus trips to the Big Apple Story by: ANDREA CAMBERN

T

I

racy McAllister loves New York City so much, she made it her job to be there as often as

possible. Looking for some extra money, the 49-year-old Upper Arlington nurse started Tracy’s Trips, which whisks Central Ohioans off to the Big Apple for 36-hour weekend journeys jam-packed with fun. It all started with an obsession with Marlo Thomas—that girl. Even at age 6, McAllister didn’t miss the 1960s sitcom following the antics of a young, independent woman determined to make it in Manhattan. “I loved watching

all she encountered,” McAllister said. “I longed to roam the streets of New York City.” Columbus would be as close to big city as the girl from Portsmouth would get to call home, but that didn’t keep her from visiting as often as she could. In 2008, though, McAllister’s husband was without a job, and her seasonal shopping trips stopped. Her nursing salary wasn’t enough, and she eventually found herself in need of extra cash. “Everyone said, ‘Do what you love,’ ” she remembered. “I thought, ‘I love nothing more than Manhattan.’ That’s how my business was born.” For the trips, which cost

$99 per person, McAllister’s customers board a big bus on Bethel Road at 8 p.m. on Friday. They arrive in New York City at 7 a.m. Saturday, explore at will and jump back on the bus—shopping bags in hand—at 10 p.m. They arrive back in Columbus on Sunday morning. “They are free to spend the day as they wish,” McAllister said. “I am there to provide as much or as little guidance as they like.” McAllister also works to make the journey part of the fun. The trip includes chick flicks, raffle prizes and games en route. Then it’s lights out, so travelers can conserve en-

ergy for their whirlwind day. Sue Kimble, a 46-year-old caregiver from Upper Arlington, was too excited to sleep. The fall bus trip she took with a group of girlfriends was her first to New York City. “It was a blast. We did so much sightseeing, shopping, eating,” she said. “I can’t wait to do it again.” McAllister prides herself on preparing clients and helping some put together a plan of action. “There’s nothing worse than a group getting off the bus and one person wants to go here, another wants to eat there,” she said. “I work with them months in advance to be sure they make the most of their time in the city.” McAllister also tailors the trips for special occasions. There’s a “Last Fling Before the Ring” trip. An “American Girl Doll Adventure” for mothers and daughters. Even a “Botox and the Bus” excursion. As Tracy’s Trips has taken off, McAllister now plans to expand her schedule and possibly add more cities. But none will replace the city she loves. Realize it or not, like Marlo Thomas, McAllister’s made it in Manhattan. If only for a couple of days at a time. SPARKING THE LIGHT When her sons fell ill, Mindy Atwood didn’t get down, she got active Story by: MELISSA KOSSLER DUTTON

W

hen Mindy Atwood organized a fundraiser 10 years ago to help families with sick children, she never dreamed she would find a calling. Atwood and her husband, Rodney, knew firsthand how devastating a child’s illness could be, so they wanted to reach out to other parents. But when she realized how many families needed help, the Hilliard resident knew she wanted to do more. Today, Atwood, 52, serves as chief executive officer of Patches of Light, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the parents of critically and terminally ill children. The Hilliard-based organization provides financial assistance to families who are struggling to make ends meet while caring for their kids. The agency pays household or medical expenses for families referred to it by hospital social workers. Atwood, a media assistant at Hilliard Station Sixth Grade School, runs the organization without pay. “Patches has saved patients from homelessness,” said Faye Bullio, a Nationwide Children’s Hospital social worker and Patches of Light board

member. “Mindy has been tirelessly devoted to this effort. She is the spark.” Atwood understands how quickly medical bills and other expenses accumulate. Her son Jason is a cancer survivor and her other son, Michael, had open-heart surgery as a child. “People assume if you have insurance you’re going to be OK,” she said. The reality, though, is that debt mounts from missed work and uncovered expenses. “It’s just amazing what families are going through,” she said. “In the beginning, I was crying all the time.” The agency raises about $40,000 a year through various fundraisers, including a walk-a-thon, a volleyball tournament, a penny drive and a Ducky Derby. Amy Browning, whose son has leukemia, said Patches of Light has given her Hilliard family breathing room. She greatly admires Atwood’s dedication to the cause. “There’s no anger, no regret. She took what she was dealt and made something good of it,” Browning said. “That’s a hero.” But even a heroine has her limits. “We do just about anything,” Atwood said–with perhaps one exception. “I always say we don’t do windows.”

SORRY, JIM, BUT IT’S OVER

D

enise Pietzsch was in a public bathroom recently when she heard the woman in the next stall on the phone, breaking up with her boyfriend. “I should not be hearing this,” Pietzsch thought to herself. “You should not be doing this. Are you going to flush?” The rise in cell phone use has made such encounters increasingly common. In the rush to answer calls, texts or

e-mails, many mobile phone users seem to forget where they are, who they’re with or what they’re doing. With mobiles to their lips, they yell at spouses in grocery stores, question coworkers while checking in at the doctor’s and chat up friends during movies. “We’re just getting ruder and ruder all the time,” said Pietzsch, executive director of Etiquette & Protocol Image Consultants in Worthington. Pietzsch, who politely scolded the woman in the

bathroom, encourages people to take others to task for rude behavior. It’s perfectly acceptable to ask people to take their cell phone conversations out of the room, turn off their phones during a meeting or meal or refrain from answering texts during a conversation, she said. The key is approaching them in a polite, calm manner, she added. “I don’t think it should be ignored,” she said. “We’re letting people get away with bad behavior.”

Tech Etiquette There are some clear do’s and don’ts when it comes to using cell phones and other mobile gadgets. DENISE PIETZSCH of Etiquette & Protocol Image Consultants, NANCY FLYNN of The ePolicy Institute and BETH MCGRATH, an associate professor and the business office applications coordinator at Columbus State Community College, shared these tips. Shut it off J Turn off your phone for

MANY CELL PHONE USERS SEEM TO FORGET WHERE THEY ARE, WHO THEY’RE WITH OR WHAT THEY’RE DOING WHILE THEY GAB

meetings, job interviews, church, doctor visits, lunch dates and important dinners. Few matters can’t wait until you’ve eaten a meal or finished a meeting. Taking calls tells your companions they aren’t important, Flynn said. “You wouldn’t go to dinner and turn your chair around and talk to people at the next table and ignore [who] you’re with.”

Apologize in advance J If you absolutely must

take a call, apologize to your colleagues or friends at the beginning of the meeting, dinner or event. Acceptable excuses include an urgent business matter, a response to an offer to buy or sell a home

or an update on a critically ill family member. Flynn recommends saying this: “I want to apologize now. I’m expecting a critical call. When it comes, I absolutely have to take it. I’ll leave the room and handle it as quick as I can.”

Think before you speak J Don’t engage in personal

or important work-related conversations within earshot of others. “Never say anything out loud that you wouldn’t want to put on a billboard,” Pietzsch said. “Imagine that [the person you’re on the phone with] is right there.” If you need to discuss sensitive matters, move to an isolated location, she said. “Get up and get out.”

Part of the problem is that people feel as though a cell phone gives them some sort of anonymity to speak of personal situations or other private matters, added Nancy Flynn, executive director of The ePolicy Institute, a training and consulting firm in Columbus. “People will say things in public on a cell phone that they would never say if that person was standing right there,” she said. “There is a real disconnect.”

Hang up at checkout J A person waiting on you

deserves your attention, the experts said. “It’s especially rude if it slows you down or slows the people down behind you,” Pietzsch said.

Don’t text, either J Don’t convince yourself that

sending a quick e-mail or text during a meeting is less rude than answering your phone. “Your attention should be on the topic at hand,” McGrath said. It’s also wrong during movies or concerts, Pietzsch said. Other patrons will notice the tapping of the keys and lit screen. “It’s so rude,” she added.

Proofread your e-mails J Though sending an e-mail

from your BlackBerry is less formal than a letter, it’s still important to be professional. Abbreviations and other informal language are not acceptable in the business world, McGrath said. “It’s absolutely necessary to proofread and spell-check your e-mail before sending it out,” McGrath said. She recently received an e-mail with the salutation “Hell Beth,” instead of “Hello Beth.” May/June 2010 CAPITAL-STYLE.COM

Twice as Nice Jennifer Bahney’s translucent, disc-shaped soaps are designed to pamper your skin—and someone else’s soul. Handcrafted by Bahney in her Circleville home, SavonClaire soaps come in scents like orange pomander and chocolate truffle. And for every $9 soap sold, Bahney donates one to someone whose body and spirit could use it. They’ve soothed folks ranging from the Columbus SouthSide Community Action Network’s homeless program to as far as Haiti. “The idea is for people in need to get something nice,” said Bahney, 42, who also makes beauty products for Long Hair Lovers, her other home-based business. “It’s like, ‘I know you’ve got problems a lot bigger than this will solve, but maybe this will make you feel a little better.’ ”

A Leg Up on

VARICOSE VEINS

Randall W. Franz, MD, FACS, RVT

If prominent leg veins are causing you to contemplate the warmer months ahead with a certain amount of hesitation, you’re not alone. The National Library of Medicine reports that problem veins develop in half the population over the age of 50, and are more common among women.

T

hose “road maps” on your legs aren’t just unsightly—they’re unhealthy, and they put you at risk for a host of medical problems. They develop when the tiny valves inside the leg veins fail to close properly, allowing blood to flow backward and pool, engorging the veins and causing the bulging, discolored appearance that makes so many people self-conscious.

Expert help Don’t let varicose veins progress. Seek help from the area’s recognized leaders in vascular health, Central Ohio Vascular Services. At this premier practice, highly qualified and extensively trained vascular surgeons make use of advanced venous duplexing technology to identify the source of your venous problems. They then carefully select the best procedure for bringing relief for your problem veins.

Specialized approach If the problem lies in the greater saphenous vein, a minimally invasive office procedure is used to deliver laser energy to the walls of the problem vessel, gently collapsing it. Blood © 2009 Advent Media Group

naturally reroutes to healthier veins. When the problem is with one of the lesser leg veins, transilluminated powered phlebectomy, a gentle surgical outpatient procedure, may be employed to remove the diseased vein through a series of small incisions. “We use the TriVex™ system for this procedure,” informs board-certified vascular surgeon Randall W. Franz, MD, FACS, RVT, “an advanced method that allows us to place fewer incisions and remove the problem vein in less time than was possible with earlier methods. “We are unique in our level of expertise with TriVex™,” says Dr. Franz. “It delivers quicker recovery times and better cosmetic results for our patients.” Another procedure, one used to treat tiny, superficial veins that appear close to the surface of the skin, is sclerotherapy. Performed in the office, a series of fine-needle injections gradually cause the spider veins to disappear. “Patients shouldn’t suffer with varicose veins,” emphasizes Dr. Franz. “We look forward to putting our specialized training to work for them in relieving pain and restoring a more attractive appearance to their legs.”

COOKING UP

SWEET FEET

Making a foot scrub using a few common kitchen ingredients can be faster and less expensive than buying something manufactured. We scoured the internet for a variety of homemade recipes, and then tried them ourselves. Here, we share our favorites. Story by: BRITTANY KRESS I Photo by: WILL SHILLING

OATMEAL SCRUB

SAND SCRUB

SALT SCRUB

SUGAR SCRUB

COFFEE SCRUB

This recipe results in the most paste-like scrub, which means it’s the perfect balance of exfoliation and hydration. It’s also the most gender-neutral.

You might not be on the beach today, but you’ll be one step closer after using this foot scrub. A citrusy essential oil gives this one a bright, sunny scent, and you can even use sand from the kids’ sandbox to make it.

It’s a good thing this strawberry-based scrub is made with salt; otherwise, you’d be tempted to eat it.

Enjoy an indulgence for your feet. Sweet and sour scents combine in this brown-sugar-based scrub.

1 T canola oil 2 T dry beach sand 3 drops essential oil

strawberries, 5 mashed with fork or in food processor l 2 T olive oil l 1 T kosher salt Pros: Delicious-smelling and ripe with hydration.

l l l l l l

We’re not promising a boost of energy, but thanks to the coarse texture of the coffee and other ingredients, exfoliating is the easiest with this scrub.

l l l l l

2 T ground oats 2 T cornmeal 2 T sea salt 2 T aloe vera gel 2 T lotion

Pros: Since this scrub is relatively dry, the scrubbing power will still be there for future uses. Cons: This scrub can be a bit messy. And unless you use a pretty potentsmelling lotion, it mostly smells of cornmeal.

l l l

Pros: Easy to make and uber-moisturizing. And with the neutralsmelling base, this scrub really gives you a burst of the essential oil’s scent. Cons: With sand as the only emulsifying agent, you’ve got to rely on a bit more elbow grease to get the same results with this one.

Try it!

l

Cons: Reminds us of a mask for the feet. Rely on this one more for relaxing moisture infusion and less for exfoliation. Also, watch out for messy drips.

2 T brown sugar 2 T ground oats 2 T aloe vera gel 1 T honey 1 t lemon juice 1 t olive oil

Pros: Despite its stickysweet ingredients, this one washes off smoothly and leaves skin feeling quite wellscrubbed. Cons: Don’t plan on saving the extras for later. Once the oats absorb the liquids, the scrubbing power will be greatly reduced.

l l l l l

3 T ground coffee 2 T sea salt 2 T olive oil 2 T cornmeal 2 drops essential oil

Pros: If you like the smell of coffee, you’ll have fun rubbing the grounds on your feet. And even if you don’t, coffee beans are sometimes used to remove foul odors. Surprisingly, the essential oil scent remained after the feet were rinsed. Cons: This scrub is on the dry side, and the coffee grounds can be quite messy.

Because these scrubs can be messy, use them while perched on the side of the bathtub. For the best results, soak your feet in warm water before using a scrub; afterward, rub in a layer of rich lotion. As a built-in bonus, after you exfoliate from heel to toe, your hands will emerge similarly smooth.

suffer from the same self-diagnosed problem a lot of us women do: Vitamin Me Deficiency. My quest? To find a quick fix. In an effort to explore a possible remedy, then, I planned a one-night “Retreat in the City” getaway, bid my family goodbye and drove to the Short North on a Friday afternoon. I popped into ZenCha Tea Salon

for a late lunch, then blew the dust off my credit card and did my bit to boost the GNP before checking into the Victorian Village Guest House, an exquisitely appointed apartment I had all to myself for the next 24 hours. Lisa Craig Morton and her husband, Jeff, built the guest house behind their 115-year-old Queen Anne-style home and now rent it out. HEALTHY BALANCE

Think of it as beauty for the inside as well as the outside. Holistic treatments get to the root of what ails you and, explains Inner Connections owner Suzi Wilkoff, unleash and flush out the metabolic waste within. But if you’ve never tried any of these treatments, what can you expect? I tried the Healthy Balance package ($225), which included three treatments spread out over five hours:

Hypnotherapy Don’t worry—this kind of hypnosis didn’t render me unconscious and prone to animal imitations. Rather, Chel Hamilton guided me into a deeply relaxed state where we focused on strategies that would help me get to sleep faster at night. It’s also considered an effective treatment for breaking bad habits like smoking or unhealthy eating. Postscript: I feel as if it’s been taking me less time to get to sleep at night.

Deep-tissue massage I’ve had deep-tissue massage before, but my session with Lonni Perry, a strong and jovial woman, was the first time I’ve had muscle knots worked on without being left in sharp pain. Better yet, afterward I felt energized, not wobbly, so I walked to High Street for a leisurely falafel and macchiato lunch at Impero Coffee Roasters before returning to Inner Connections.

Acupuncture For this treatment, the “problem” I presented to Deb Engelgau, a former chemical engineer, was a left foot with a lingering sports injury. We pinpointed the injured area, but Engelgau also mapped out related parts of my body that would benefit from having the tiny acupuncture needles inserted. If that last phrase gives you pause, it really shouldn’t. The dozen needles don’t go deep or draw blood, and I only felt pressure (not pain) when she tapped them into place. I even opted for the mild electrostimulation, and my foot felt better for days afterward.

fully stocked kitchen (including bittersweet fudgie cookies from Pistacia Vera!) and the rubyred-walled bathroom (with fluffy towels and French toiletries). After she left, I ordered a take-out dinner of beet salad and mustard-crusted trout from nearby Basi Italia and settled in for a little alone time. The next morning, I ditched my breakfast plans (instead opting for the organic berry cheesecake I hadn’t eaten the night before … hey, this was all about me time, right?) and then strolled to Inner Connections Holistic Bodywork Center half a block away on Neil Avenue. Morton, the guest house owner, and Suzi Wilkoff, owner of Inner Connections, together dreamed up this “Retreat in the City” concept. After my night in the guest house, I was prepared for the bodywork portion of my retreat. Wilkoff greeted me with my itinerary of treatments and a tray of healthy snacks. The cen-

ter, in business for nearly 15 years, is home base for a variety of practitioners. I had opted in advance for the Healthy Balance package, which included hypnotherapy with Chel Hamilton, deep-tissue massage with Lonni Perry and acupuncture with Deb Engelgau. Though I would have loved to squeeze in some yoga, Wilkoff explained that this many treatments would be more than enough for my system, and she was right. The treatments were fantastic, but afterwards I was surprised to find I had zero impulse to head out for more shopping. Wilkoff confirmed that many holistic treatments leave you feeling “ready to hibernate,” which is why, if I were planning such a retreat again, I might opt to spend the night at the guest house after the visit to Inner Connections. As it was, I had to head back home—but I returned, at least, refreshed.

THE MAKING OF A HOSTESS

I

n hindsight, the timing of Lisa Craig Morton’s career crisis couldn’t have been better. In January 2008, after years in the banking industry, Morton felt herself losing interest, so she began working with a career coach

98

to find something she’d be excited to wake up to each day. “One of the things we discussed was that when my husband and I travel, we love to stay in bed-and-breakfast places,” Morton said. “I loved the idea of doing something like that.” Morton knew she had the perfect space for it. Not long after buying their fixer-upper in Victorian Village six years ago, Morton and her husband, Jeff, got permission from the neighborhood’s historic commission to reconstruct a carriage house behind the home, at the western edge of their long lot. “We dug up the in-

CAPITAL-STYLE.COM May/June 2010

surance maps from the 1920s and could see what used to be there,” Morton said. Using that footprint, they built a two-story structure with a three-car garage on the bottom and a 950-square-foot apartment above. “At the time, we didn’t know what we’d use it for,” Morton said. “And really for the first four years, it was just sitting there.” Then came the guest house idea. Morton decided to ease into the hospitality industry by opening a guest house rather than a more time-intensive bed and breakfast, because she wasn’t financially ready to quit banking just

yet. She formed her business in April 2008 and welcomed her first guests that July. In October, she found out she was being laid off the following year. “The economy tanked, but it was OK,” Morton said, “because by then I had pretty much decided I was done with banking.” She hasn’t looked back, investing her professional expertise and passion for the Victorian Village neighborhood into her business. She has filled the guest house with antiques and furniture picked up through years of travel in the U.S. and Canada, blending everything to create a

cozy yet sophisticated space. Morton, an active member of the Short North Business Association, seeks out resources available to women-owned businesses, and has been forging partnerships with other local businesses like Basi Italia restaurant. The Retreat in the City venture with Suzi Wilkoff’s Inner Connections Holistic Bodywork Center began nearly a year ago. “For me, the most rewarding thing in all this is that we just fell in love with this neighborhood,” Morton said. “Now I can be an ambassador for that.”

Haus Warming Tour Columbus interior designer Rick Miller has decorated extravagant houses from Seattle to Croatia. But it’s his own fabulous one-bedroom abode that you’ll have a chance to peek inside this summer as part of the 2010 German Village Haus und Garten Tour. Miller, who owns Miller Van Order Interior Design, favors an eclectic style of décor. “I decorate with a mix of things,” he said. “I think it makes it more interesting that way.” He surrounds himself with colorful artwork, a variety of Asian accessories, lots of photos and, perhaps most notably, bold swatches of red. “It makes me feel good,” he said. “You’ve got to have a little red—and a little animal.” The German Village Haus und Garten Tour is June 27. Tickets cost $15 in advance or $20 the day of the event. For details, visit www.GermanVillage.com or call 614-221-8888.

WITH THE HELP OF A WELL-KNOWN BUILDER AND TALENTED DESIGNER, ONE COUPLE CREATED THEIR DREAM LOFT AT MIRANOVA Story by: SHELLEY MANN

I Photos by: WILL SHILLING

Good chemistry with their designer helped in crafting their ideal modern space, Cris and Beth Assif said

V

isitors to Cris and Beth Assif’s Miranova condo immediately notice the striking light fixtures, like a gold-leafed metal piece that resembles bleached branches, and an expandable chandelier above the dining room table. What they might not quickly pick up on is how great they look beneath the lights. “People do look good in this place,” Beth said. “The lighting is flattering, with the reds and pinks.” Lighting was a key factor in interior designer Amy Hiteshew’s plan for the modern

condo, built by John Behal. It was a way to add the soft feeling Beth wanted in the industrial, loft-style space the couple favors. Hiteshew worked closely with the Assifs from the time they purchased the unit—their second at Downtown’s Miranova. She decorated their first condo there, too, and the couple was eager to collaborate again. “The chemistry was there,” Beth said. “She’s does very cutting-edge design if that’s what you want to do.” The designer is equally enamored with her longtime clients. “They have classic, modern taste, so that’s fun to work with,” Hiteshew said. “I don’t get to do a lot of modern work.” With Behal’s help, the team shaped the condo into the couple’s dream home, sticking with some aspects of the original floorplan but making plenty of tweaks. The initial plans didn’t have a living room area, so the couple opted to shave space off the kitchen to make room for one. “It was kind of silly big, with two islands,” Cris said of the original kitchen. “And it’s just us and the dog ...”

ADDING A TRANSOM WINDOW BETWEEN THE FAMILY ROOM AND BETH’S OFFICE ALLOWS IN MUCHWANTED SUNLIGHT

The couple converted what was intended to be a sitting room into Beth’s open and spacious office. A guest bedroom doubles as an office for Cris, with a massive glass desk custom-built by a local craftsman. Having separate home offices was crucial for these “virtual workers”: Cris runs his own IT consulting business, while Beth works as a consultant in the technology sector. In the master bedroom, Behal opened things up with a three-quarter-height wall and doorway. Shortening that wall—and adding a transom window between the family room and Beth’s office—allowed in much-wanted light. All the while, they preserved space in the 2,800-square-foot unit by using frosted-glass pocket doors whenever possible. “Anyplace we could, we did a pocket door,” Cris said. The couple shaved the kitchen “You don’t appreciate

The finishes throughout the condo complete the soft and modern vibe, and it all started with the floors. Beth wanted reclaimed white French oak. “But when you try to price that out, it would’ve been our entire budget,” she said. Instead, they went with hickory manufactured floors. Every other choice, from the painted concrete and marble fireplace in the living room to the green subway tiles and stainless-steel kitchen counters, was made to complement that flooring. “For better or worse, this is totally our taste,” Cris said. “We picked everything out.”

A DESIGNER’S WEEKEND RETREAT MARRIES CHIC STYLE WITH RURAL COMFORT Story by: KRISTY ECKERT

I Photos by: WILL SHILLING

s she strolls across the heart of her family’s 58-acre retreat near Granville, Monique Keegan talks about comfort. That is, after all, what this rural paradise is all about. With a husband who commutes to Pittsburgh for work and a 12-year-old son with loads of energy, the heralded interior decorator wanted to create the perfect place to spend weekends together—without worrying about high-maintenance décor. “I am not spending my entire weekend vacuuming and Swiffering,” Keegan said. “This is a place for us to unwind and just have fun.” The pieces of blue balloons she picks up as she walks—remnants of a water balloon fight—prove that she’s not just talk. Though her client list is impressive, this isn’t a stuffy woman. She’s a mom who’s fun, and Summer Haven reflects it. Keegan, 43, and her husband, Keith, 45, spent years on the East Coast before moving to Central Ohio for work. They fell in love with Granville and have gutted, renovated and moved from five homes there. Now, they live in their sixth. Amidst the several moves, Keegan switched from clothing design to interior design and opened Enjoy Co., a decorating studio that recently expanded to include a retail store. When their son Maxfield was two or three, the couple started looking for property they could use as a weekend escape. It took years to find what they envisioned, but in 2006, they purchased Summer Haven, a spacious retreat 18 miles from Granville. The property included a main cabin, guest house, tack room, handful of barns and plenty of woods for hiking and ATV riding. It needed years of work, but Keegan and her husband, who grew up on a farm, were game. Though the land is vast, the main cabin is small, so making every inch usable was Keegan’s greatest challenge. The mid-century Chevy pickup isn’t just for looks: Keegan sometimes drives it space, for example, is almost nonexistent. And the kitchen where Keegan enjoys experimenting with recipes is half the size of some master bathrooms. But she made it work—remembering always that the retreat isn’t even about the indoors. “You’re not really in the house. Even in the winter, you’re out hiking, sledding,” and, she said, laughing, “clearing all the trees that keep falling down with all these ice and wind storms!” Now, the family spends weekends there year-round, often hosting guests while hiking, gardening and roasting marshmallows around the fire pit. Because this, Keegan made sure, is not a house to admire—it’s a home to enjoy.

THE STATUE

The 22-foot-tall statue that welcomes guests to Summer Haven is a representation of an unknown WWI soldier crafted by self-taught carver Brice Baughman. For years, it stood among statues of presidents at Baughman Park in Frazeysburg. Roughly 7,000 people attended its dedication in August 1921, and according to research Keegan has done, it was said to be the artist’s favorite statue. In 2008, when someone purchased the park and auctioned off the statues, Keegan wanted one to preserve herself. “We really felt that in order to keep some of the history of Frazeysburg, where Brice Baughman was from, we needed to buy a statue,” she said. George Washington was fabulous, she jokes, but perhaps a little highbrow for Summer Haven.

THE MAIN CABIN

126

The main cabin, built in the 1820s, includes a kitchen, family room, dining room, mud room and bathroom on the first floor, along with two bedrooms upstairs. Before Keegan got a hold of it, it offered all sorts of exciting details—like dowdy curtains, a room painted hot pink and woven-rag rugs inexplicably covered by layers of paper. Keegan originally envisioned chairs with white slipcovers downstairs, but after spending time in the home with trial furniture, she nixed that idea, opting instead for durable leather. She also decided to keep the original hardwood floors, but darkened them. And she updated a lot more than aesthetics: She added air conditioning and heat, installed electrical outlets to the family room and dining area, revamped the plumbing in the kitchen and built a bathroom upstairs.

CAPITAL-STYLE.COM May/June 2010

KITCHEN Keegan revamped the tiny kitchen into a usable modern industrial space by trading out appliances and the sink, converting an old work table into an island, enlisting a local man to craft new cabinets and adding pretty-and-functional open shelving above the windows. “There was really no other way to do it,” she said. “I had to get creative.”

UPSTAIRS Keegan guesses that the previous owners stocked the home’s second level with bunk beds. For her family’s purposes, they converted it into two bedrooms and installed insulation and a bathroom. Maxfield’s room includes a circular bed in the middle, and the room Keegan shares with her husband boasts one of her favorite pieces in the home—the “cabins” sign.

DINING ROOM With a tall husband—Keith is sixfoot-five—and low ceilings, Keegan decided to convert this giant coffee table into a dining table, and use cushions as seats. To best use space, there are also tin boxes in the dining room that aren’t just decorative: they hold cooking utensils.

Décor

Some of the décor, like the “under conservation” sign, are treasures Keegan found while cleaning out the space.

THE GUEST HOUSE

When the family bought the property, this space— which sits about a football field away from the main cabin and was constructed in the 1940s—was rundown and filled with decades worth of trash. “It was really scary,” Keegan said. But once they cleared it out, they salvaged the original hardwood floors, replaced window panes, added two lofts and painted everything. They spent time in the space before deciding how to use it, and eventually settled on creating the ultimate kids’ hangout. To decorate in a campy theme, Keegan embarked on a long search for real wooden Army cots, which she finally found online—“And they’re actually comfortable!”—and dressed them in Swiss bedrolls from a vintage military dealer. The other decorations are also practical: The fireplace is functional—and the structure’s only heat source. The lockers are stuffed with extra sleeping bags. Glass jars hold goodies like nuts and pinecones that the children collect. And there are movie lights for skits the kids create, as well as a giant table for playing everything from card games to bingo.

Décor

The pub’s original hardwood floors are still in place. And the wall décor reflects the pub’s history: A portrait of a family member who originally owned the house hangs near the bar, and a State of Ohio scroll Keegan found there has been framed and hung as well. 130

CAPITAL-STYLE.COM May/June 2010

THE PUB

Originally built as a tack house, likely in the 1950s, this structure once stored hay and other necessities for horses. (There are posts all over the property for tying up ponies.) By the time Keegan purchased the property, it had been converted into a party barn, complete with an antique bar that apparently came from somewhere in Newark. “And it was well-used, is the understanding we got,” Keegan said, smiling. Now, they enjoy toasting with friends in the pub and dining just outside of it when the weather’s nice.

Outside, Keegan and her husband installed a fire pit themselves. “We do have a lot of bonfires, a lot of s’mores,” Keegan said, “so that’s definitely a highlight.” Her husband also cleared out four ATV trails himself, and they had a basketball court installed for Maxfield. ach spring is a time to celebrate the small pleasures in life, like the tender green peas that pop up as one of the earliest signs of warmer weather. The strawberries that begin to appear near the end of May. And the colorful flowers that brighten things up after months of bare branches. We asked renowned local chef Hartmut Handke of Culinary Fast-Trac catering to create a menu that stars his favorite flavors from the most fleeting of seasons. From a fresh-tasting chilled pea soup with just a hint of smoky bacon to striking and succulent lamb chops, the elegant dinner party Handke dreamed up is perfect for ushering in sunshine. We photographed this delicious soiree in the beautiful German Village home of Jim Ressa and Steve Zawada. For a chic dinner party, event planner Harry Baucom of Details and Florabunda Designs suggested table settings that match the elegance of the food but don’t take attention away from it. To accessorize the table, Baucom avoided flashy china and opted for a simple silver-rimmed pattern, matched with Mikasa’s unfussy Park Lane line of crystal. He picked a few bouquets in springy yellows, blues and lavenders, incorporating French tulips, white amaryllis, viburnum and Mokara orchids.“Everything is styled to be as asymmetrical as it could be,” Baucom said. “You never want to be too matchy-matchy.”

Chilled Spring Pea Soup Ingredients l l l l l l l l l l l l

1 oz. slab bacon, cut in half, or 4 slices bacon 1 T extra virgin olive oil 2 celery stalks, peeled, trimmed and thinly sliced 1 small onion, peeled, trimmed and thinly sliced 1 leek, white part only, thinly sliced, washed and dried Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste 5 cups chicken stock, unsalted 1 rosemary sprig 2 1/4 pounds petite peas 1/2 pound sugar snap peas, thinly sliced 1/2 pound snow peas, thinly sliced 1 bunch Italian parsley, leaves only

Heat a medium casserole dish over medium heat and toss in the bacon. Brown the bacon very well, then pour off the rendered fat. Add the olive oil to the pot and warm it. Add the celery, onion, leek and a little pepper. Lower the heat and cook the vegetables, stirring until they soften but don’t brown, about 15 minutes. Pour in the chicken stock and toss in the sprig of rosemary. Bring to a boil, lower the heat and simmer the soup for 15 minutes. Spoon out and discard the bacon and rosemary. Pour the soup into the container of a blender and puree until smooth (you might have to do this in batches). Set the soup aside to cool. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Toss the sugar snap and snow peas into the pot and cook for 3 minutes. Add the petite peas and cook for another 3 minutes. Toss the parsley into the pot and cook everything a final minute. Pour peas into a strainer and run all of the ingredients under cold water to cool them down quickly and to set their

colors; drain again. Put the peas, parsley and a little of the soup into the container of a blender and run until smooth. (You might have to add more of the soup to keep things moving in the container.) Add the remainder of the soup, in batches, and run until you have a smooth mixture. Push the soup through a fine mesh strainer to make certain it is smooth and free of small pieces of pea skin, then taste it and add salt and pepper accordingly. Pour the soup into a container and refrigerate until cold. C

1 cup heavy cream 1 rosemary sprig 1 clove garlic, peeled, split and germ removed 5 strips of bacon, finely diced Salt and freshly ground white pepper to taste

Bring the cream, rosemary and garlic to a boil in a small pot, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, just until the cream thickens a little. Strain the cream, discarding the rosemary and garlic, season with salt and pepper and chill. While the cream is cooling, brown and lightly crisp the bacon in a pan over medium heat, then drain it well between several layers of paper towels. To serve, ladle the soup into cold bowls and drizzle a bit of rosemary cream over each portion. Top with a sprinkling of bacon.

The atmosphere: You won’t believe the splendor that’s hidden behind the unassuming strip-mall-style facade. The Turkish spot boasts soaring ceilings, arched architecture, striking chandeliers and pretty stained-glass accents. It’s absolutely gorgeous, and a perfect retreat from the hubbub outside.

The food: The names might be slightly different, but Cafe Istanbul specializes in the kind of Mediterranean cuisine you know and love (think lots of fresh vegetables and herbs, plenty of lamb and eggplant, and everything drizzled in olive oil). This place offers a fantastic

146

CAPITAL-STYLE.COM May/June 2010

Appetizer Sampler featuring a helping of nearly every choice from the starters menu. It comes in small and large sizes, and the large is ample enough to serve as an entire meal for two (or even three) diners. With some soft flatbread for dipping, you get a smorgasbord of eight dips, salads and

other treats. Highlights include creamy hummus, stuffed grape leaves, a smoky eggplant puree called Patlican Salatasi, a pinto-bean-green-pepper-andpotato mix known as Pilaki, and Haydari, a thickened yogurt dip with fresh dill, mint and garlic. Yum! Or you could go for a small-

sized sampler and try one of the entrees. The Shish Kebab is a solid choice, with cubes of chargrilled lamb marinated in a flavorful—and pleasingly spicy—sauce. It’s not served on a skewer, but instead with some sautéed seasonal vegetables on a pile of tasty rice pilaf.

Rounding out a menu of upscale sandwiches and pasta dishes is a nice variety of hearty salads, like Chicken Artichoke & Goat Cheese or Cilantro Lime Shrimp options. tasty candied pecans. A dark cherry balsamic vinaigrette perfectly ties together all the flavors in this sweet and salty salad. Save some room for dessert, too, like a warm White Chocolate Bread Pudding topped with raspberry sauce or Triple Berry Shortcake with whipped cream.

t’s all about the presentation at Cantina Laredo. At most Mexican places, you can’t hope for more than a vaguely identifiable pile of rice, meat and cheese, smothered in enchilada sauce. Here, the guacamole is lovingly prepared—tableside! Glistening ceviche is nestled inside a curling leaf of lettuce. And desserts are served on a sizzling platter, fajita-style. That wow factor partly accounts for prices that are a little on the high end. But your payoff comes in more than just looks—you get fresh, high-end ingredients and outstanding made-from-scratch sauces. The Cantina boasts a soothing environment, with warm desert tones, blond wood walls and low lights. Plenty of high-backed booths make for intimate dining, even when the place is packed. (Note: I visited at 7:30 p.m. on a Saturday and 7:30 p.m. on a Sunday, and the difference was remarkable. On Saturday, the crowd spilled out of the spacious lobby, and the wait for our party of four was an hour and a half—a bearable wait, because you can duck out and hit a few stores at Polaris Fashion Place. On Sunday, we waltzed in and were seated immediately at our choice of tables in the mostly empty dining room.) A backlit bar features as fine a collection of tequilas as you’re likely to find in this city. You can sample the selection with $20 tequila flights (a choice of three anejo, reposado or plata tequilas).

Or, they can be mixed with fresh-squeezed fruit juices to create some very tasty margaritas. I liked the signature Casa Rita ($8), with Sauza Blanco, Cointreau and lemon and lime juices, but even better is the Cabo Margarita ($12.50), made with super-smooth Cabo Wabo Reposado and Grand Marnier. Just talking about Mexican food makes me hungry for chips and salsa. So I was happy to be served a nice big bowl of warm tortilla chips with two dipping sauces, a traditional mild salsa and a hot version that was both spicy and warm. Warm salsa was a new and enjoyable experience, with the heat intensifying the flavors. Every meal here should start with the Top-Shelf Guacamole ($9.50). Our waiter brought out all the ingredients—whole avocados, chopped tomatoes, red onions, seeded (aka not-too-spicy) jalapenos, lime slices and a spice/salt mixture—in individual bowls on a serving tray. He mashed the

avocados in a molcajete, or the Mexican version of a mortar and pestle, then mixed in all the fixings. The result was the freshest and creamiest guac I’d had in quite a while. It kept getting better as the flavors melded together, so I’d suggest lingering over this dish if you have the time. As far as main courses go, the Cantina has standard fare like soft tacos and enchiladas (including a delicious-sounding avocado-and-artichoke variety topped with tomatillo sauce), but also a hefty number of more authentic dishes, like carne asada, carnitas and ceviche. In fact, the Ceviche ($9) is a perfect example of how this place does “gourmet Mexican food.” Along with the chunks of citrus-marinated shrimp, scallops and white fish was an unexpected surprise—a colorful melange of roasted red peppers, green olives and capers. Those salty flavors actually married quite well with the heavy hit of lime juice. Long strips of reddishorange tortillas fried to a crisp are provided for scooping up the ceviche. The Carnitas ($20) were similarly stunning. Rather than the typical chunks of pork, you get three tender braised shanks served on the bone, resting on top of rice and sautéed seasonal vegetables.

The backlit bar features as fine a collection of tequilas as you’ll likely find in Columbus. Mix them with juices for fabulous drinks.

Doing Dinner All through our dinner, we smelled another fantastic sauce from an ice-creamtopped dessert. Spooned on top is a smoky and complex chipotle-wine sauce, an unusual flavor pairing that worked better than I expected. The Cantina folks are pretty proud of those sauces, all made in-house and featuring some innovative flavor combos. My favorite was an intensely green cilantro one spooned on the shrimp skewers from an otherwise unremarkable appetizer platter. All through our dinner, my pal and I had been catching intoxicating whiffs of caramelized sugar. We’d been smelling another fantastic sauce, this one a Mexican Brandy Butter served on either a brownie or a slice of apple pie ($6). You should go ahead and just order one of each. In a final bit of showmanship, our waiter brought out two cast-iron skillets topped with our desserts of choice and a scoop of ice cream (you can choose between vanilla and cinnamon; the cinnamon is better), then poured the Brandy Butter over the hot skillet and let it bubble into caramel-colored deliciousness. I’m pleased to report they both tasted just as good as they smelled.

Le G de Chateau Guiraud (2008)

Uptown Pinot Noir (2007)

Region: Bordeaux, France Tasting notes: A lush, creamy mouthfeel dominated by grapefruit and kiwi flavors Pair with: Seafood, lemon chicken or a salad topped with vinaigrette dressing Why Liz likes it: “This winery is world-renowned for their Sauternes dessert wine, so they are considered premier cru, which is a first growth— the second-to-highest rung of the classification in Sauternes. But this is their little table wine sort of thing, so you’re getting really good grapes for not a lot of money.” Cost: $22

Region: California’s north coast Tasting notes: Light but rich, with dark cherry and blackberry fruits and the warmth of burnt brown sugar Pair with: Mexican cuisine, salmon dishes, anything prepared with Jamaican jerk seasoning Why Liz likes it: “It’s lighter bodied, but it still has a lot of very rich flavor. It’s definitely not watery or too delicate. Spicy foods have a hard time competing with red wine’s tannins, but pinot noir has less tannin by nature, so it goes well with Mexican. I’d put this with a black bean salad.” Cost: $21

uring a recent book club meeting, Sharon Klamfoth shared a sentence that moved her while reading a novel. “Education is not a path, it’s a tree,” she read to the women gathered at Linda Pyle’s Reynoldsburg home to discuss These Is My Words by Nancy Turner. Klamfoth told club members she liked the notion that education was more than a journey to a diploma. Though they hadn’t discussed the idea before, the members of the Bound Together book club embrace the concept. They regularly bring additional materials or information to enhance the discussions. Although it was her first time attending a meeting, Karla Hall brought

along a bit of history about Thanksgiving. It struck her as odd that the characters in the book, set in the late 1800s, never mentioned the holiday. She decided to find out why. Thanksgiving, she discovered, did not become an official holiday until 1863, during Abraham Lincoln’s presidency. Since the book was set 20 years later in frontier Arizona, Hall speculated that “word hadn’t spread that far west.” “I had to know so I looked it up,” the Columbus resident said. It’s that kind of curiosity that makes the book club so rewarding, said Pyle, the group’s founder. “It really does help [the discussion] when people look up a little extra fact,” she said. “Everyone appreciates it.”

Linda Pyle formed the club upon her retirement because she wanted to keep busy and stay in touch with former colleagues. Number of members: 12 Can members bring friends? Yes. Five tips for easy entry into the world of watching birds

Birding takes an hour to learn—and a lifetime to master

1

Buy a feeder. Before you seek out flying friends, bring some to you. A backyard food source will introduce you to common species. Try blackoil sunflower seeds to attract a wide range.

Story by: JOHN ROSS

I

Go with a group. Central Ohio is home to many regular bird walks, during which friendly amateur guides show newbies the ropes. For starters, check the calendar at www.ColumbusAudubon.org.

3

4

Buy some binoculars. You’ll soon learn that most birds don’t like to sit still or fly close by. Good, user-friendly models start at around $70.

5

Wake up early. Not all birds follow the same patterns, but many sing loudly and fly more around sunrise and sunset. Get out before 7 a.m. to enjoy good airborne activity.

t’s the rare hobby that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, regardless of location, fitness level or budget. It’s also one of the fastest-growing hobbies in the country: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that one in five Americans watch birds. And many stay right here in the Buckeye State to do it. “It’s amazing how good Ohio can be over the course of a year,” said Bill Heck, secretary of Columbus Audubon, the local chapter of the national conservation group. “You can see an awful lot of stuff, and you can do it relatively easy.”

2

Hit the books. With a good field guide, you’ll learn what a bird looks like and important info about following it through the woods. Be sure to get a book with a focus on Ohio or the Midwest. Stan Tekiela’s “Birds of Ohio” is a great start.

The Inadvertent

VISIONARY

Sharon Houghton was on a business trip in 1998 when she got a call that her father had an aortic aneurysm. So the woman who had been raised Catholic but hadn’t truly practiced her religion in years stopped at a small-town shrine, lit a candle and said a prayer. “Let me know that my father will be OK,” she pleaded. That night, she says, she was granted a gift from God: She can see things—spirits, signs—that others can’t. At first, she was the biggest cynic of all, she says. But in the dozen years since that unusual day, Houghton, who considers herself a mystic (not a psychic), has been sought out by thousands of people—from surgeons to grieving families. She helps them through troubling times by telling them what she sees, which might be anything from a sickness inside someone’s body to a person standing beside them. Houghton, who works in sales and marketing, has never charged anyone for her guidance. “It’s a grace from God,” she said, “to spread the word of God.” Story by: KRISTY ECKERT
