Feel your best starting with your stomach Did you know that they key to personal health may begin in the core of the body? Doctors and researchers are learning more and more about how the immune system and other functions of the body are tied to microscopic players housed in the stomach and intestines. Improving this digestive environment can benefit the body in various ways.
Understanding probiotics
Kickmaster Athletic and Event Center Kickmaster Footgolf, located at 1700 Dyer Road in Grove City, is where your fun begins! We are the first dedicated footgolf course in the United States and the first soccer theme park in Central Ohio. Our soccer theme park includes an inflatable soccer dartboard, soccer target challenge, soccer pool table, inflatable climbing wall, and bubble balls in a 10,000 square foot athletic facility. Our indoor athletic space doubles as an elite training field for football, soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse and any sport of your choice with batting cages and a pitching machine – everything you need for practice and games.
Bodily bacteria outnumber body cells by 10 to one, offers the health and wellness resource Healthline. Most of the bacteria in the body are harmless, and many of them in the gut actually are linked to numerous health benefits, such as weight loss, enhanced immune function, reduced risk of disease, and improved digestion. Unfortunately, bad bacteria also vie for space in the gut. If the good bacteria and yeasts, or probiotics, are not in abundance to push out the bad bacteria, like salmonella and E. coli, those bad bugs can proliferate, causing problems. It is essential to keep an abundance of probiotics available to stay healthy and maintain the “good vs. bad” balance in the gut.
Getting probiotics We have a state-of-the-art golf simulator available to either practice or join a golf league. We also serve as a venue for birthday parties, weddings and team building. Our 3,000-square-foot clubhouse offers a variety of finger foods, candy, and more, including adult beverages for the over-21 crowd. Please call 614-595-8659 for more details.
While the body can be healthy without the addition of probiotics, having more can be beneficial. The Cleveland Clinic says that food and supplements containing probiotics assist the good bacteria already present in your gut. When a course of antibiotics wipes out both good and bad bacteria, for example, probioticrich foods and supplements can more readily replace what’s lost. Dietary sources of probiotics include some yogurts, cheeses, kefir, sauerkraut,
miso, kimchi, pickles, and beverages like kombucha, a fermented tea. Getting probiotics from foods is the most natural way to supplement good gut bacteria, as the foods meld with the probiotics in ways that doctors may never understand to deliver the most benefits. The downside is it’s impossible to measure just how many probiotics can be acquired from foods. That is what makes supplementation so handy. Capsules and tablets are loaded with a variety of different active bacteria and yeast cultures to aid the digestive system in measurable ratios. Some tout anywhere from one to 30 billion active colony-forming units (CFUs) per serving.
Side effects Probiotics are generally healthy for people to consume in amounts found in foods, advises the Mayo Clinic. Most healthy adults can safely add foods or dietary supplements that contain probiotics to their diets. Introducing probiotics may cause temporary and mild flatulence, discomfort and bloating. Probiotics can be yet another tool to improve overall health at any age, but especially for adults looking to minimize illness risk.

Discover and Celebrate Grove City
G
rove City is a town built on community, where the living is easy, neighbors become friends and memories last a lifetime. More than an ordinary suburb, Grove City separates itself from the rest through pride in its rich history, traditions that stand for generations and its dedication to maintaining a small-town America atmosphere. Historic Town Center, the heart of the community since 1852, continues to bustle with activity as new restaurants and shops join the quaint, walkable thoroughfare. Discover the unique wares in the distinctive shops sprinkled down Broadway, take in a live performance at Little Theatre off Broadway or – as the warmer months approach – enjoy a delightful meal with friends or family, al fresco, at one of the establishments with patio dining. One of the most notable gathering places for annual events, Town Center comes alive in the summer. George Edge Music Park on Broadway and surrounding areas host a multitude of events, including Friday night outdoor concerts and Saturday morning farmers’ markets. Bringing the community together in fun and festivity, annual celebrations such as the Heart of Grove City Wine and Arts Festival, Ohio Flags of Honor Memorial, Homecoming Celebration, EcoFest, Arts in the Alley, Boo Off Broadway and the Christmas Celebration are all enjoyed in Town Center. For accounts of history beyond what can be personally shared, a visit to Grove City’s Welcome Center and Museum will fill in the gaps. Located in Town Center on Park Street, the Southwest Franklin County Historical Society
(SWFCHS) maintains a dedicated and detailed account and display of Grove City’s founding and happenings through current days, continuing a commitment to preserve history and share with the community. Expanding on the City’s display of history, all are invited to step back in time with a visit to Century Village at Fryer Park, Grove City’s turn-of-the-century historic park. Experience life as it was in the 1800s during monthly open houses or enjoy the Heritage Celebration and Old-Time Harvest Day. The events provide guests an opportunity to enjoy handson activities and explore century-old buildings, including the Orders Road one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, cabin and barn. The old train depot, originally located near Town Center, was recently moved to Century Village where crews of dedicated SWFCHS members are in the process of restoring it to resemble a working train station eventually serving as a fun, educational exhibit of a bygone era. Grounded in its humble beginnings as a village, Grove City continues restoration efforts on some of its oldest and most noteworthy historical sites. Thought to be the oldest home in Grove City, constructed in the 1830s, the Grant-Sawyer Home on Haughn Road has been beautifully and accurately restored to 19th century charm. Hosting several open houses throughout the year and welcoming scheduled tours on request, the home has earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places. Also on the National Register is the Gantz Homestead, commonly referred to as the Gardens at Gantz Farm. Though not open to the public, the farmhouse restoration was completed in the early
1990s and work continues on the serene surrounding gardens and public park. Truly a space created by and for the community, the Gardens of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow feature heirloom fruits and vegetables; culinary, fragrance, dye, medicinal, knot and taxonomic vegetation; and herb containers for harvesting in bulk for teaching purposes, accommodating the educational offerings at the Farm. With acres of green space, trails and play areas surrounding the farmhouse and garden, Gantz Park is a wonderful destination for family gatherings and relaxing outdoor fun. Grove City boasts parkland ranging from mini and neighborhood parks convenient to subdivisions, featuring

commerce together. Providing residents with opportunities to get to know each other and interact as neighbors is key to fostering Grove City’s celebrated small-town feel. The Parks and Recreation Department manages and coordinates a wide range of recreational, educational, cultural arts and athletic
meditative space or playground equipment, to larger community parks with special features that serve as destination points for Grove City residents and visitors. Helping to support the goal of a fully interconnected community, more than 25 miles of paved bike and leisure paths tie parks, neighborhoods and
programs and services, including outdoor education, concerts, sports and aquatics as well as fitness, enrichment and educational activities. The Big Splash family aquatic park, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, is a great place for the community to spend their summer days, whether patrons purchase a season pass or just visit for a day. A new event for 2019 is Grove City’s Build, Blast & Grow Celebration in early May at the Kingston Center. Hosted by the Grove City Parks and Recreation Department, the event provides hands-on science experiences covering a variety of scientific topics, including crafts, rockets, robots, plants, animals and environmental science. The event builds on Grove City’s participation as a sponsor city in the inaugural 2019 COSI Science Festival, bringing Columbus and surrounding communities together in celebration of science and discovery the first Saturday in May. Families are invited to enjoy open-air family entertainment on the hill at Fryer Park with weekly outdoor family movies Thursday evenings during June and July. Daily activities abound at the park’s softball diamonds, fishing pond, paved and wooded paths, space-themed playground and the new Splash Pad, a free interactive water play area for people of all ages and abilities. Residents at least 55 years old discover and enjoy a multitude of activities available to them through the Evans Center at Windsor Park, including daily lunch, entertainment and shopping trips, hobbies and exercise classes. Equipped with four mini-buses and providing nearly 40 years of transportation services, the Center is committed to supporting the needs of Grove City’s senior population. Home to Little League baseball and a very long history of strike-outs, homeruns and victory celebrations, Windsor Park boasts ball diamonds of varying dimensions, including two turf
diamonds and the Mirolo Dream Field at Mount Carmel Stadium, equipped with a special playing surface that provides athletes of all abilities an opportunity to participate in organized baseball. In 2018, the ball diamond and accompanying all-abilities playground earned statewide recognition for capital improvement from the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association (OPRA), a nomination for the OPRA Governor’s Award, and GameTime Playground’s national award as an Inclusion Champion at the National Parks and Recreation Association annual conference. The annual Homecoming Celebration in Town Center precedes what has become known as “The World’s Largest High School Alumni Softball Tournament. Held the last weekend in July each year, with nearly 100 teams representing six decades of graduates, the GCHS Alumni Softball Tournament is played out on nearly every softball diamond in Grove City, and beckons home generations of alumni and their families. Grove City is forever grateful to its veterans, first responders, and families of heroes who blazed a path protecting freedoms and lives, providing a voice and giving us strength to not only embrace our heritage, but also celebrate and share it. Gratitude is immense and evident through not only the City’s annual Memorial Day, September 11th and Veteran’s Day ceremonies, but also its monuments and memorial parks, such as the Purple Heart Walk at Henceroth Park, the Gold Star Families Memorial Park in Town Center and the 9/11 Memorial at Jackson Township Fire Station 204. From the unique shops and restaurants in historic Town Center to the trails connecting all of the City’s more than two dozen parks and historic sites, there has never been a better time to visit, discover and celebrate Grove City.

Enjoy corned beef and cabbage this St. Patrick’s Day Corned beef and cabbage might not be a part of many people’s diet regimens throughout the year. But come March 17, it’s not uncommon to find people from all walks of life indulging in this beloved meal. March 17 marks the celebration of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Over the years, the day has also become a celebration of the Emerald Isle. Such celebrations tend to feature corned beef and cabbage, even though the dish may have little to do with Ireland (and even less to do with St. Patrick). The precise origins of the link between corned beef and St. Patrick’s Day remain a topic of debate, but some historians say the corned beef enjoyed today can be traced to New York City’s Irish immigrant population in the 19th and 20th centuries, who popularized a salted meat made from brisket that was then sold by Jewish butchers. Regardless of the authenticity of its link to Ireland, corned beef is delicious
and many modern Paddy’s Day celebrants wouldn’t think of going without it on March 17. Those who want to cook up their own can try this recipe for “Corned Beef and Cabbage” from Arthur Schwartz’s “New York City Food” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang).
Corned Beef and Cabbage Serves 6 to 8
Cook a whole brisket with both sections together with all its fat. (You can trim off the fat after the meat is cooked.) Whole brisket and second-cut corned beef brisket are hard to find, but your supermarket should have first-cut corned beef vacuumpacked in plastic. Choose the fattiest piece in the case and treat it gently. You can cook the cabbage and potatoes in the same water as the corned beef. Because the other vegetables need to be cooked in water that simmers more than the meat, scoop out water from the corned beef pot and cook the vegetables in a separate pot or pots. 1 1 1 2 6
4- to 5-pound corned beef brisket teaspoon pickling spices head cabbage pounds boiling potatoes to 8 small carrots (optional) Parsnips (optional) Turnips (optional)
Place the corned beef in a pot that holds at least 5 quarts of water. Cover completely with cold water. Place over high heat and bring to a simmer. As soon as bubbles start to break on the surface of the water, adjust the heat so the water simmers very, very gently. With a slotted spoon, skim off the residue that accumulates on the surface. When the residue stops coming to the surface, add the pickling spices. Continue to cook, with bubbles just gently breaking on the surface, for 3 to 4 hours, until fork tender. The meat can be safely held in its water for about 2 hours; reheat gently. Cook the vegetables until fork tender in separate pots of boiling fresh water or, especially for the cabbage, use some of the water in which the corned beef was cooked. Slice the corned beef and serve with mustard and/or horseradish on a platter, surrounded with some of the vegetables or with vegetables in a separate bowl.

Snakes and St. Patrick
For many years, one of the prevailing stories about St. Patrick involved the patron saint of Ireland driving snakes out of the Emerald Isle. Today, visitors to Ireland likely won’t see a snake while traversing the country’s rolling green hills or idyllic countryside. However, that absence of snakes has little to do with St. Patrick and more to do with geography. According to History.com, water has surrounded Ireland since the end of the last glacial period. That water has kept snakes out of the country. And prior to that most recent glacial period, Ireland was covered in ice, making the country uninhabitable for cold-blooded creatures, including snakes. The story of St. Patrick banishing Ireland’s snakes into the surrounding seas is likely an allegory that highlights his role in bringing Christianity to Ireland. In that version of events, the “snakes” are actually the pagan ideology that natives to Ireland had embraced for centuries.
The origins of the leprechaun myth The tricolor flag. A pint of Guinness. Bagpipes. Each of these things are symbols of St. Patrick’s Day, which celebrates the patron saint of Ireland every year on March 17. While each of the aforementioned symbols is tangible, one popular image has proven a little more elusive. Leprechaun imagery is ubiquitous during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, but even the most ardent Paddy’s Day revelers may know little about these mythical creatures. Now widely depicted as tiny, bearded and mischievous men clad in coats and hats, leprechauns have been traced to ancient Ireland. The precise etymology of the word “leprechaun” is unknown, though many scholars believe the word we use today is derived from the old Irish “Lœ Chorpain,” which means “small body.” Some scholars point to the 8th century word “luchorpin,” meaning “sprite” or “pygmy,” as the origins of the word leprechaun. Another word, “lubrican,” which first appeared in the English language in a 1604 play written by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, also has been linked to the modern word leprechaun. Some historians believe the myth of the leprechaun has origins in ancient Ireland, when people believed the tiny creatures were among the various inhabitants of fairy forts and fairy rings throughout the Emerald Isle. Another take on the source of the leprechaun myth is that these tiny creatures were modern incarnations of the Euro-Celtic god Lugh, who was the sun god as well as the patron of arts and crafts. Manuscripts from the 12th to 15th centuries suggest leprechauns lived underwater and were not all male (modern
leprechaun depictions are all male). In fact, the resource Ancient-Origins.net states that female leprechauns were depicted during this time as figures devoted to luring human men away for various adventures. While 21st century celebrants of St. Patrick’s Day might be hard pressed to find images of leprechauns not dressed in green, that wasn’t always the case. Prior to the 20th century, leprechauns were described in various depictions as wearing red. The images of leprechauns can be seen everywhere on and around St. Patrick’s Day, and those images have evolved considerably over the centuries.

Our curriculum is written specifically for the children in the classroom. We combine play with learning, as we’ve discovered that when children are completely immersed in their play, they can actively learn throughout the day. APRONS AND EASELS We can host just about any party. From birthday parties and girls’ night out to scouts and office parties. Painting parties are fun for all! CAMP PATMOS A Christian camp and retreat center on Kelleys Island for children going into Grades 4-12, with weeklong camps running Monday through Saturday, Camp Patmos is rich in island history. Our core values include a safe environment, exceeding expectations, relationally centered, volunteer integration, investing in people, every camper counts and guided discovery to intentionally reveal God’s truth from the Bible. CLASSROOM ANTICS Classroom Antics camps spark creativity by allowing kids to use their imagination to create, make and build new ideas, processes, games and solutions. Kids are introduced to fun challenges and opportunities to gain new insight into STEM subjects, instilling confidence within each camper as they learn. And they’re not alone! Our camps are designed to inspire collaboration among campers, allowing for new friendships to blossom. CODEVERSE Codeverse Summer Camps are the best interactive coding experiences for kids ages 6-13. Codeverse offers innovative weeklong camps, aptly named “Coding FUNdamentals,” for tech-loving kids! Whether your child is new to coding or has been grabbing for the family iPad since they could toddle, this action-packed camp is perfect for beginners and experienced coders alike. Topics include coding, video game development, app design and 3D modeling!
FLOURISH CHIROPRACTIC Flourish Chiropractic exists to love and honor you and those close to you. We are a community founded on the belief that every individual was designed to live an empowered and fulfilled life. Located in a state-of-the-art facility, we have paired the most advanced technology with the most researched and proven techniques to help you function at your best. HELLOFRESH A lifesaver for busy families! Dinner in 30 minutes (really), using simple techniques and low (or no) prep ingredients. Dietitian-approved meals that you’ll actually enjoy cooking (and eating).
KIDDIE ACADEMY At Kiddie Academy, we recognize that each child’s learning style has its own momentum, power and rhythm, and that confidence grows in and out of the classroom. The capacity for learning runs deep, and it’s the inspiration for our Life Essentials philosophy and curriculum. KUMON Kumon helps accelerate your child’s learning — from as young as age 3 all the way through high school. The Kumon Reading Program starts your pre-readers off with fun “look, listen and repeat” worksheets. Colorful illustrations help connect words to familiar objects, to start putting words together. Your child will progress to identify nouns, verbs and adjectives, and use them within sentences.
THE LEARNING ACADEMY Children are born naturally curious. We enrich that curiosity with a research-based curriculum built to develop your child’s confidence, creativity and lifelong critical thinking skills. THE LEARNING SPECTRUM TLS provides naturalistic programming for children with autism spectrum disorder and other disabilities based on the premise that behavioral intervention and immersion in the natural environment are the keys to establishing learning behaviors in students. VENTURE OUT RESORTS Venture Out! Resorts’ Arrowhead Lakes Resort is located in beautiful Wapakoneta. The resort offers modern amenities in a traditional “outdoorsy” camping setting. Nature, lakes and lots of trees will give you the relaxation you are looking for, while the modern amenities will allow you the opportunity to stay active and still have the comforts of home. YMCA OF CENTRAL OHIO YMCA camps share one thing: they’re about discovery. Kids have the opportunity to explore nature, discover new talents, try new activities, gain independence and build lasting friendships and memories. And, of course, it’s fun!
