2011 Are you CHARGED up? It’s the beginning of a fundamental shift in cars and in car culture. The forces perpetuating this shift – environmental, economic and political – are conspiring to literally drive new technologies closer to the forefront of automotive development. The first of these new-wave eco-mobiles, the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf, will join a growing list of gasoline-electric hybrids that populate dealer showrooms. Many others are waiting in the wings ready to tout impressive fuel-economy numbers resulting from increasing on-board battery storage capacities, plug-in charging capabilities and extended electric motor ranges. Those who shun the next wave in vehicle propulsion still will wind up driving significantly more fuel-efficient models, regardless of size or type. Increasingly stringent government fleetaverage fuel consumption regulations are driving automakers to produce more efficient cars, both big and small. Many automakers are beginning to eliminate their thirstier engines, while shrinking the size of others. Reduced consumption might be the target, since it’s measurable, but less pollution is the ultimate goal. Ironically, these same fuel-stretching cars and trucks actually are growing more powerful. Average horsepower and torque ratings

appear to edge up each year in lockstep with average fuel economy gains. Honestly, how bad can that be, since it points to greater efficiency from every drop of fuel? What does all this mean for car shoppers? Bottom line, it’s a win-win scenario for both the manufacturers and their customers. It’s proof that the automobile continues on its path to becoming a smarter, greener and far more efficient appliance than ever. Factor in pricing that for the most part remains laced with incentives, low interest rates and other inducements, and it’s hard to argue against the notion that 2011 and beyond will be banner years for automotive development, with a bouquet of exciting, enticing cars of all stripes for us to ponder, dream about and salivate over. That’s a shift we can all embrace. It’s time to smell the roses.

Hot news for 2011: It’s the A8’s turn for a complete makeover, and it doesn't compromise. • The R8 supercar is joined by a Spyder convertible. • One of the newest members is the Q5; now comes in a less-pricey base model with fourcylinder power. • Q7 gets some new duds and trades in its V8 for forced-induction V6 power, gas or diesel. ■ Overall: Audi’s classy limousine grows while the wick is turned up on the power supplies. The A8 retains subtle style outside, but the cabin is easily the new class leader in sumptuous luxury. Drivetrain: Revised V8 and returning W12 gain extra ponies and transmit power via standard eight-speed automatic transmissions and Quattro all-wheel-drive. Like all headlining luxury sedans, the A8 is designed to showcase the automaker’s latest styling direction and technology features. The second-generation A8 still set benchmarks for

interior quality and luxury. Audi has delivered a fitting replacement for its executive-class limousine, and it still begins with an all-aluminum space frame that’s lighter and stiffer than before. The A8 comes in regular and extra-long L form, which adds rear-seat-passenger stretchout room. The vehicle’s pneumatic suspension; a computer charges the system to best absorb road bumps. Driver-operated systems — everything from entertainment to the suspension — are controlled through a console-mounted, turnand-push selector knob and a 7-inch screen on the dash, which also is redesigned to read the driver’s handwriting on a special panel. The A8 has plenty of power amenities and a leather interior. Audi says special sounddampening materials make the A8 quieter than its key competitors. The standard driver-select package allows drivers to change the suspension, steering, transmission and differential settings between cushy soft and racetrack hard.

Hot news for 2011: Lip-smacking redesign of X3 sport utility vehicle and new 5-Series sedan • Hybrid powertrain debuts in the X6. • New base 7-Series sedan brings in a six-cylinder. • X5 features styling updates. • Higher-performing Z4 model is added. • New eight-speed automatic transmission improves economy/performance. ■ Overall: "Bigger," "stronger" and "more luxurious" are the watchwords for this popular Bimmer. New Gran Turismo model combines both hatchback and wagon attributes. Drivetrain: The engine lineup consists of a base 240-horsepower, 3.0-liter six-cylinder; a 300-horsepower, 3.0 turbocharged inline sixcylinder; and a 400-horsepower, 4.4-liter turbocharged V8. The new 5-Series sedan joins the GT hatchback as the only 5-Series models available in North America. There are apparently no plans

to sell a 5-Series wagon or an M5 performance sedan. The new sedan has grown a few inches in length and width for a roomier cabin with improved backseat space and a trunk expanded by 30 percent. The control panel angles slightly toward the driver, while BMW’s console-positioned “iDrive” controller reigns supreme over the ventilation, communications and optional navigation system. As before, three distinct 5-Series sedans will be offered. At the pinnacle of the range is the 550i/550i xDrive with its 400-horsepower 4.4liter twin-turbocharged V8 that belts out 450 pound-feet of torque. The best of the rest of the techno-goodies arrive with the optional Sport Package. This includes BMW’s Driving Dynamics Control that allows the driver to adjust the 5-Series’ ride, handling and drivetrain characteristics to "comfort," "normal," "sport" and "sport-plus" settings.

buick.com Hot news for 2011: New Regal makes a comeback and exclusively uses four-cylinder powerplants. • LaCrosse might have been new last year, but that hasn’t stopped Buick from dropping in a new base four-cylinder engine. ■ Overall: The Regal is just what Buick needs to update its image: a stylish, sporty and economical sedan that’s in step with the times. Drivetrain: Featuring a base 182-horsepower, 2.4-liter engine; optional 2.0-liter, 220-horsepower turbocharged I4; and a 255-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo with all wheel drive in the 2012 GS. The Euro-originating Buick Regal was created as the Opel Insignia and captured the 2009 European Car of the Year award. It might win a few trophies in North America as well. The automobile’s clean, yet expressive, look is a far cry from just about any other Buick ever built. It’s in the same size range as the Acura TSX, Lincoln MKZ and Lexus IS 250. However, its trunk space and rear-seat legroom

are significantly greater than in all three competitors. The standard powerplant is a 182-horsepower 2.4-liter unit that originates from the Buick LaCrosse, while a 2.0-liter turbocharged fourcylinder packing an estimated 220 horsepower will be available partway through the model year. Both engines transmit their power to the front wheels by means of six-speed automatic transmissions. First-year Regals will be sold only as fully loaded CXL models, which means plenty of power-operated and luxury-oriented content will be part of the standard package. A console-mounted control knob that operates the optional premium audio, navigation and Bluetooth-enabled phone systems are available, as is the Interactive Drive Control System offered on turbo-equipped versions. This feature electronically adjusts the suspension travel and transmission shift points according to three different settings: Normal, Tour and Sport mode.

Hot news for 2011: CTS line grows and grows. New coupe joins the wagon and sedan with optional “V” power. DTS and STS hold fast while a successor is being readied. ■ Overall: The coupe joins the sedan and sport wagon for the 2011 model year. Highperformance CTS-V version, with its 556-horse V8, now available in all three body styles. Drivetrain: Duo of V6 engines has plenty of power for most folks, but there’s a gap to the CTS-V that uses a Chevrolet-Corvette cam-inblock V8 engine boosted by a supercharger. The new CTS Coupe is a derivative of the CTS Sedan, which is also the basis for the CTS Sport Wagon spin off introduced for the 2010 model year. Compared to the sedan, the coupe’s lowered roofline means a 2-inch reduction in height. Meanwhile, overall length is a mere 2 inches shorter than the sedan. The coupe provides enough space for as many as four passengers. The coupe’s base engine is a 304-horse-

power 3.6-liter V6, instead of the sedan’s base 270-horsepower 3.0. The coupe is available in CTS-V trim, which includes a 556-horsepower, 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that comes from the CTS-V sedan. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on both the CTS and CTS-V, while a six-speed automatic with driver-controlled, steering-wheelmounted shift buttons is available for both. Standard content includes many of the features built into the sedan, but extras include keyless access and remote push-button start as well as a performance suspension with 18-inch all-season tires. The extensive list of available options includes 14-way adjustable Recaro-brand front sport seats, premium leather and wood trim, backup camera and adaptive headlights that pivot in the direction that the car is turning. Buyers can opt for 19-inch summer tires that provide more road holding while sharpening up the steering. There are numerous technology updates well as free maintenance for four years.

Chevrolet chevrolet.com Hot news for 2011: It’s the year of the Volt, billed as the most revolutionary automobile of all time, but there’s also the new Cruze to replace the Cobalt. • Camaro convertible launches in early 2011. Corvette has new packages. • New Caprice cop car carries DNA of Pontiac G8. ■ Overall: This European-designed, global small car is set to replace the Cobalt as Chevy’s prime compact. A total of 10 standard airbags tops those of many other luxury cars' safety equipment. Drivetrain: Base 1.8-liter I4 and optional 1.4liter I4 turbocharged each produce 138 horsepower. Both manual and optional automatic transmissions are of the six-speed variety. The Cruze replaces the Cobalt as Chevrolet’s compact conveyance. It doesn’t stray too far from the Cobalt’s dimensions, but a 2-inch gain in wheelbase combines with a nearly 3-inch increase in width for a 9-percent bump in passenger room as well as a slightly larger trunk. The Cruze’s design closely emulates that of

other Chevy sedans, especially the midsize Malibu’s horizontally split front grille and short rear deck. The interior reveals a highly attractive seating area that wouldn’t look out of place in a more expensive sedan. The Cruze’s standard and optional powerplants are diminutive. The base LS is equipped with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder. The 1.8 offers a choice of a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic, while the 1.4 turbo is available only with an automatic. The Cruze features a class-leading total of 10 airbags. In addition, the standard stability control includes a rollover sensing program that will deploy the airbags if it detects the car is about to tip over. Notable options include a premium Pioneerbrand sound package, Bluetooth short-range wireless networking, navigation system, leather seats (heated in front) and 17- or 18-inch wheels (16-inchers standard).

Hot news for 2011: Some people still need trucks and Chevrolet has them; brand new heavy-duty model for the 2011 model year. ■ Overall: An all-new, heavy-duty chassis delivers greater hauling and towing capacity; new exhaust braking system should add extra life to regular brake setup, and most importantly, there’s a new diesel. Drivetrain: The carryover base features a 6.0liter gas V8. Upgraded 6.6-liter, turbo-diesel V8 is smoother and quieter and puts out 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque. With the debut of the latest Silverado, Chevrolet believes it is has the right stuff to attract the “heavy-duty” crowd with new features and technologies plus a superior level of barraising muscle. The rear leaf springs have been beefed up and now feature a 6,200-pound gross rear-axle rating on the 2500 (three-quarter-ton) HD series, up from the previous 6,084-pound mark. The HD can trailer 16,000 pounds using a

conventional ball hitch, or as many as 20,000 pounds with a fifth-wheel mounted in the bed. The base 6.0-liter gasoline V8 remains unchanged at 360 horsepower and 380 poundfeet of torque. But the real game-changer is the optional 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 that retains the outgoing motor’s displacement but now puts out 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque. Both base and optional engines employ sixspeed automatic transmissions. Chevy has added its “smart exhaust brake system” to the turbodiesel for the 2011 model year. When coasting, compressed exhaust gasses are contained inside the engine’s cylinders, creating resistance, which in turn slows down the truck without touching the brakes. A stability program is included to reduce the trailer’s tendency to wiggle around, while hill-start assist prevents the HD from rolling backward when on an incline. The list of standard HD equipment on the WT (Work Truck), LT and LTZ trim levels is tremendous, as is the options list. Buyers can outfit the HD from basic to over-the-edge luxury.

Chrysler chrysler.com Hot news for 2011: Everything is hot, actually, since there’s so much work going on in the new-product department of this Fiat-controlled company. • New Chrysler 200 replaces the Sebring, but uses the same bones. • New Pentastar V6 with about 280 horsepower • 300 returns with an eight-speed transmission. ■ Overall: New, you say? Although based on the previous front-drive Sebring-sedan platform, there’s more“new” going on here than a name change. Drivetrain: A 2.4-liter four-cylinder is around for frugal shoppers, but the star of the show is a new 3.6-liter V6. Chrysler’s claims nearly every system in the 200 is updated or new. The 200 is based on the previous front-wheeldrive Sebring sedan platform, but with much smoother front and rear styling and LED lamps. The sides appear unaltered from the Sebring, although there are new mirrors.

Underneath, there has been a number of structural enhancements and suspension changes to improve ride quality and cut down on noise. Inside, there’s the usual makeover ingredients such as a new instrument panel and upgraded seat design with new fabric and leather. There’s also plenty of what Chrysler calls “softtouch” features, such as armrests and better ventilation ducting. Overall, it’s a good tuneup over the Sebring. There’s no question that the 200 looks better, and the new optional engine should make it a more lively ride for the whole family. While the base powerplant is a 2.4-liter fourcylinder, buyers can select a new Pentastar 3.6liter V6. The four-cylinder is coupled to the price-leader model’s four-speed automatic transmission, or buyers can specify a six-speed automatic. The latter is the only choice when it comes to the 3.6.

Dodge dodge.com Hot news for 2011: New Durango sport utility vehicle shares its DNA with the Jeep Grand Cherokee as opposed to a Dodge truck. • No Dodge trucks this year – move to “Ram” division. • Charger restyle makes it look a bit more like a “real” Charger, with four doors. • New names for Caliber models ■ Overall: Think of the returning-to-action Durango as an all-purpose Jeep Grand Cherokee with different body panels and a distinctively Dodge-like grille. Powertrain: A brand-new 290-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 becomes the base engine, while a 360-horsepower, 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 is the obvious choice for developing maximum thrust. The new Fiat-backed team is introducing a slew of new, refreshed and revamped Chrysler-, Dodge-, Jeep- and Fiat-branded vehicles. And that includes the Durango sport-utility vehicle. This time, though, the big “D” has been designed off the new 2011 Jeep Grand

Cherokee’s unitized (frameless) platform. That should be just fine with most buyers since the new Jeep is receiving high marks for its stout architecture that’s capable of taking plenty of off-road abuse without twisting itself into a pretzel. The 290-horsepower V6 is highly regarded also as well as the optional 360-horsepower, 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8. The Hemi-equipped Durango can tow loads as heavy as 7,400-pounds and can also carry as many as seven passengers when using all three rows of seats. Along with four-wheel-drive, Durango options include a system that signals you when another vehicle is about to overtake you or is traveling in your blind spot. Another system alerts you when a vehicle is approaching from behind as you’re backing out of a parking stall. Dodge claims the Durango’s generous fuel tank will allow you to travel up to 500 miles without filling up.

Hot news for 2011: Fiat is a back in North America, with sales of the 500 built on the back of Chrysler’s dealer network. • The 500 is popular in Europe somewhat because it’s a retro ride. • The 500 is billed as being in the same league as the Mini Cooper, but the 500 will be priced much lower to start. ■ Overall: Fiat’s funky little Euro-designed two-door arrives in North America from its Mexico assembly plant. Parent Chrysler hopes to woo small-car lovers with the 500’s distinctive style and gas-sipping ways. Drivetrain: A 1.4-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine delivers about 100 horsepower and connects to a six-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. While just about every automaker has rushed to bring in at least one small-car model to market, Chrysler, now owned by Fiat, is still relying on the Caliber. The quick solution was to bring the Fiat 500 to Chrysler dealer lots. The darling of

Europe, the popular 500 is a throwback to the original model from the 1950s. North American drivers will get the opportunity to sample the tiny hatchback’s delights through a separate dealer network currently being set up in conjunction with Chrysler. Initially, the 500 will be offered in base and sport versions, to be followed by iterations labeled "Pop" and "Lounge," each featuring specific equipment levels. A 500C (cabrio) convertible is also in the works for spring 2011. A 1.4-liter, turbo-charged four-cylinder engine supplies an estimated 100 horsepower. A sixspeed manual transmission is standard, while a five-speed automatic is an extra-cost option. The first 500 — naturally — of the Fiat 500 will be specially numbered Fiat Cinquecento “Prima Edizione” (First Edition) models. Members of the U.S.-based club, Fiat-Lancia Unlimited, get first shot at these early birds, while the rest of us will have to queue up for one.

Hot news for 2011: European Fiesta finally arrives for frugal fun times, no matter what kind of abuse the economy and fuel prices dish out. • Camaro-fighting new engines for the Mustang. • Redesigned Edge with great new looks and three engine choices instead of one. • Flex finds favor flaunting four-cylinder (new 237-horsepower Ecoboost engine). • Ford is leading the way with Sync voice-activated management of entertainment/information systems. ■ Overall: North American Ford fans get to drive the same Fiesta that Europe and the rest of the world enjoys. Drivetrain: Spunky 120-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder is mated to a five-speed manual transmission or optional fuel-saving, six-speed, direct-shift gearbox that doesn’t use a torque converter. Ford promises that none of the Fiesta’s charm and spunk has been lost in translation with the arrival of the Mexican-built, four-door hatchback and all-new North America-exclusive, four-door

sedan. The Fiesta’s design is Euro sleek, fashionable and topped off with a set of truly beautiful headlight pods that neatly blend in with the fenders. Ford calls them “Dragon’s Eyes.” The base manual transmission is a slick-shifting five-speed. A six-speed direct-shift (automated manual) gearbox that functions without a traditional torque converter is optional. Ordering a Fiesta will require careful study as there’s a wide range of models and options. The base S sedan comes with air conditioning, a tiltand-telescoping steering wheel, power locks and mirrors, hands-free capless fuel filler, plus a cabin filled with airbags. The top-level SEL sedan and SES hatchback also toss in 16-inch alloy wheels, heated outside mirrors, interior ambient lighting, premium sound package and SYNC, Ford’s voice-activated communications and entertainment system developed in conjunction with Microsoft. The options list features keyless entry with push-button start, climate control, leather seats and a power sunroof.

Hot news for 2011: Sierra Heavy Duty truck tops the news with a new Denali trim level. • Efficient XFE Sierra stretches fuel dollars. • Sierra and Yukon available with hybrid options. ■ Overall: The Sierra firmly establishes itself as a premium truck brand with the addition of the Sierra Denali HD model. Drivetrain: The carryover base features 360-horsepower, 6.0-liter gasoline V8. Optional 6.6-liter turbo-diesel packs 765 pound-feet of torque. Six-speed transmissions for all. In the past decade, the Denali name has come to represent a luxury element applied to what would otherwise be more run-of-the-mill GMC work vehicles. HD trucks wearing the Denali badge, as well as the rest of the Sierra HD lineup in regular-, extendedand crew-cab styles, can be had with a 360-horsepower 6.0-liter V8 (carried over from 2010) or an all-new 6.6-liter turbo-diesel that kicks out 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet torque.

Both engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions. For added work capability, the HD’s redesigned front suspension, combined with its newly designed ladder frame, increases the truck’s front-axle weight rating to 6,000 pounds, which is enough so that the optional snow plow accessory package can now be added to all HD trucks equipped with four-wheeldrive. At the opposite end, an all-new leaf spring results in a maximum gross rear axle weight rating of 6,200 pounds for 2500-series trucks and as many as 9,375 pounds for 3500-series trucks. Along with the HD’s enhanced towing and hauling capacities, the newly standard 36-gallon-capacity fuel tank means turbo-diesel versions have a 680mile cruising range. As is the case with all GMC pickups, the level of content, body and powertrain customization is practically limitless and guided only by your specific needs and budget.

Hot news for 2011: The new Odyssey minivan doesn’t really look or act like a minivan. • Can a hybrid be sporty? The new CR-Z coupe certainly gives it a whirl, and for not a lot of loot. • Restyled Accord to head off hot new competitors. ■ Overall: Are hybrids supposed to be about fun and games? Honda thinks so, and the ecofriendly, yet still practical CR-Z is the proof. Drivetrain: A 122-horsepower, gas-electric powerplant is plenty for this 2,640-pound runabout. Six-speed manual transmission is unique to hybrids; optional CVT. This nifty little sport coupe is Honda’s attempt to target a younger eco-aware demographic looking for something fun and affordable in which to bop around. Lifting the mostly glass rear hatch reveals an abundance of cargo room as well as a hidden console directly behind the passenger seat that’s ideal for storing valuables. Since the CR-Z borrows from the four-door

Insight hybrid’s architecture, the wide cabin has plenty of elbow room. A 1.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine combines with a helper electric motor/generator for a total of 122 horsepower. Transmission choices consist of a six-speed manual or optional continuously variable (CVT) unit with paddle shifters. Hill Start Assist briefly holds the car while you let out the clutch pedal to prevent rolling backward to eliminate the stress of launching the car on an incline. Selecting either "normal" or "econ" activates either a blue- or green-colored ring inside the tachometer/rev gauge to indicate your driving style. The more green displayed, the better your fuel economy. Well-equipped base models feature climate control, plus the usual power-operated controls, while the EX edition adds a premium audio system, Bluetooth wireless networking, highintensity-discharge headlights, fog lights, heated seats, and metal trim and pedals. Hyundai hyundaiusa.com Hot news for 2011: Brand new Sonata sedan vaults to the front of the pack, thanks to new one-of-a-kind styling and gas-electric hybrid technology. • Genesis is a genuine luxury car, but the mega-buck Equus shows that Hyundai has shocking diversity. • Smaller base four-cylinder engine for Tucson, same price as before. • Accent and Elantra holding tight for their 2012-model-year revamps. ■ Overall: Hyundai continues to turn the luxuryclass automobile scene on its chrome-tipped tailpipes with a larger and fancier version of the already-fancy Genesis sedan. Drivetrain: The Genesis-based 4.6-liter V8 that loves drinking premium juice gets the call, but rumor has it that something a bit more muscular is in store as an option. The car’s key dimensions exceed those of both the Lexus LS and Mercedes-Benz S550, models that Hyundai has in its sights. Entering through the Equus’s massive rear doors provides a clear

indication that those seated behind the chauffeur should be able to really stretch their extremities. The seats are covered in premium leather and come with built-in “thermoelectric devices” that provide heating, cooling and humidity control. The trim pieces feature genuine wood and brushed aluminum. The driver’s chair can be further upgraded with a massaging function, while twin, rear bucket seats separated by a multifunctional console are an option away. The Equus features electronic air suspension that can be adjusted for maximum cushy-ride compliance, or switched to “sport” mode if a firmer, more controlled ride is preferred. Motivating the 4,450-pound Equus involves pressing the starter button to activate its 4.6-liter V8. The transmission of choice is a six-speed automatic. The big Hyundai’s standard safety systems include lane-departure warning, safe-distancemonitoring, smart cruise control and a grillemounted forward-view camera that aids in parking.

Jaguar jaguar.com/us Hot news for 2011: The XJ makes the move to shun tradition. • New Black Pack and Speed Pack for XKR. • XF drops its base 4.2-liter V8 and only adds about $1,400 to the sticker price for a better engine. ■ Overall: The XF is one of the hottest-looking cars on the road, even if it’s a four-door sedan. It loses one engine this year, but there's a new fiveyear, free-maintenance package available. Drivetrain: Base 4.2-liter V8 is put out to pasture to leave a pair of 5.0-liter V8s in charge. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the 2011 Jaguar XF should be blushing. Just look at the new XJ that follows the XF’s silhouette. The interior provides a nod to the S-Type past with real walnut veneer trim, but there is also plenty of modern-era satin nickel that blends with the exterior’s nouveau-look sheetmetal. XF shoppers will be dazzled by a highly detailed and stylized dash layout and the feel of genuine leather seating surfaces.

Since the 4.2-liter V8 is off the books this year, that leaves three strengths of 5.0-liter V8. Base XFs get a 385-horse version. There’s an optional 470-horse version for the XF Supercharged and a 510-horse version reserved for the high-speed XF-R. Base XF content includes the luxury essentials: dual-zone climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated outside mirrors, 10-way power front seats, power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, power moonroof and rain-sensing wipers, among others. Higher up the food chain are heated front seats with three settings, soft-grain leather interior and a voice-activated DVD navigation system. The XF Supercharged pours on the goodies with a power rear-window sun blind, heated and cooled 16-way power driver’s seat, 12-way power passenger’s seat, upgraded oak veneer trim, selfleveling bi-xenon (high and low beam) headlamps with washers, rear camera park assist, unique 20-inch wheels and a premium 440-watt audio system with 13 speakers.

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee represents a quantum leap for Chrysler’s ageless off-road brand. Overall length is extended by nearly 2 inches, while the width increases by 3 inches. The distance between the front and rear wheels grows by 5.3 inches to create more rear-seat knee and leg space. Along with a stiffer platform, many of the various suspension components are shared with the Mercedes-Benz ML-class sport utility. For

2011, Jeep replaces the Grand Cherokee’s base 210-horsepower, 3.7-liter V6 with a 290-horsepower, 3.6-liter unit. The 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 is optional. Both come with five-speed automatic transmissions. The Laredo, Limited and Overland come in rear or four-wheel drive. The Quadra Trac II or Quadra Drive II include Jeep’s new Selec-Terrain control with four separate traction settings: "sand/mud," "snow" and "rock" for off-road terrain and "sport" for dry pavement. Jeep’s available Quadra-Lift air-ride suspension can be manually adjusted over a 4.5inch range to provide a maximum 11.1 inches of ground clearance. The base Laredo’s equipment includes the usual comfort and power-operated niceties, while the top two trims include 18-inch wheels, remote starter and bright bi-xenon headlights that automatically adjust their intensity. Options include a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, 20-inch wheels, premium audio system and a power rear liftgate, to name just a few of the biggies.

Hot news for 2011: Wow. Kia has three new models: Sorento off-roader, Sportage soft-roader, and an Optima paved-roader that’s available as a fuel-sipping hybrid gas-electric. • New four-door hatchback Forte. • Sedona minivan receives a smaller, but morepowerful, base engine, new transmission. • Who can argue with a 10-year powertrain warranty? ■ Overall: Kia’s signature look applied to its midsize challenger is its best yet. Drivetrain: Featuring all four-cylinders in regular, turbocharged and hybrid flavor. Rarely has a vehicle gone from the side of a milk carton to runway model as quickly as the Kia Optima. Credit goes to the company’s chief designer, Peter Schreyer, who was poached from Audi a few years back. His stamp is all over Kia, and the Optima is perhaps the best example. Kia hopes the driving experience can keep up with Schreyer’s promises by tuning the suspension for a slightly sportier drive. The entry-level engine is a 2.4-liter unit that

produces a healthy 200 horsepower. There's also a 271-horsepower, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine, and a hybrid-electric version of the 2.4 but with only 169 horses.The hybrid is the most fuel efficient, but even the base engine produces a respectable 24/35 mpg. Interestingly, the hybrid system uses never-before-employed lithium-polymer batteries that are lightweight. It's well equipped for the class with standard air conditioning, power everything, cooled glovebox, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and keyless entry. Move up to mid-range EX or turbo-only SX models for features such as front and rear heated seats, leather upholstery, back-up camera, a premium Infinity sound system and a navigation system. The SX also comes with larger 18-inch wheels, bigger front brakes, sportier suspension, bright high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights, LED taillights, a rear spoiler, side sills and a unique bumper design.

Lincoln lincoln.com Hot news for 2011: It might not have changed platforms, but the Lincoln MKX tall wagon looks like a completely different vehicle. • MKZ is based on the Ford Fusion, so the hybrid gas-electric system is a natural fit. ■ Overall: Largest Lincoln gets a few new technology features for the 2011 model year, although it's still available in regular or extra-length L. Drivetrain: Since this is the biggest Lincoln, it gets the biggest engine: a 5.4-liter V8. Built off the Ford Expedition platform in regular- and extended-by-14.7-inches L models, the Navigator has plenty of room for people and cargo. The Navigator's electric-shaverlike grille is reminiscent of those timeless Lincoln Continentals of the early 1960s. In terms of the chassis, the Navigator comes with an independent rear suspension. Regardless of whether the regular- or extended-length Navigator is chosen, there are three rows of seats. Behind the third row, real storage space awaits

Standard items include a power lift gate, heated and cooled front seats, heated second-row seats, power-folding third-row seats, parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, rearview camera and a 14-speaker THX II audio system. Ford’s capless fuel filler automatically opens when the nozzle is inserted, then seals itself shut when the refueling process is complete. Other goodies include standard trailer sway control and MyKey parental control, an interesting feature that limits vehicle top speed, sets off a warning chime at selected speeds and limits maximum stereo volume. Machined 18-inch wheels are standard, but for a little jewelry, check out the available 20-inch chrome gems. The inside is upscale, with just about every feature included, from leather seats to side-curtain airbags with rollover protection.

Hot news for 2011: The biggest news comes in the smallest package when the fun little Mazda2 arrives. • Mid-cycle refresh for Mazda6 sedan. • New Mazda5 is in the works. • Various package and trim adjustments for Mazda3 and CX-7. • Slight increases in fuel economy for many models. ■ Overall: Nearly eight years after its introduction, the RX-8 manages to thrill with its sportscar handling, zingy engine and four-door-style utility. Drivetrain: The tiny 1.3-liter rotary engine is unique. Mazda’s legendary RX line continues with the 2011 RX-8, a four-door sports car whose bulging fenders still stir the soul. Unique features for the RX-8 include 19-inch wheels, body cladding, rear spoiler, sport-tuned suspension, premium audio system, sport seats and fog lights. Combined, all the bits and pieces turned the normally nice-looking RX-8 into a

jaw-dropping piece of art. You’ll get the physically small, light and rev-happy 1.3-liter rotary engine that’s also nestled well behind the front wheels to help provide close to 50/50 front/rear weight distribution for optimum handling. In its most potent form, the six-speed-manualgearbox-equipped RX-8 develops 232 horsepower. Models fitted with the paddle-shifted six-speed automatic transmission get 212. There's a level of exclusivity; no one else sells a rotary and nothing else has that fantastic rotary buzzing sound when the tachometer happily slaps the 9,000-rpm redline. As well as the R3 model, the RX-8 comes in Sport and Grand Touring trim levels. Standard content includes air conditioning; cruise control; four-wheel, anti-lock disc brakes; six-speaker audio system with CD player; and power windows, locks and mirrors. Mercedes-Benz mbusa.com Hot news for 2011: It's largely a year for introducing more fuel-efficiency throughout the line. • Redesigned CL makes more power and gets better fuel economy than the previous version. • Restyled RL wagon • Along with the S-Class hybrid, a new diesel-powered model is in the works. • New E-Class convertible and wagon models join the coupe and sedan, as does a diesel option. ■ Overall: Flagship coupe gets a thorough redesign for 2011 model year with new engines, style and technology. Drivetrain: New twin-turbo V8 engines for base models. Two V12s carry over and fill out the rest of the impressive range. The base CL550 produces 429 horsepower – a significant jump over the previous 382-horsepower, 5.5-liter V8. It’s an engine that’s worthy of comparison to the CL600’s twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V12, with its 510 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque. The CL550 retains its standard all-wheel drive, while all other models

continue with rear-wheel-drive. Included in that mix is the CL63 AMG with its all-new 536-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 that gets better fuel mileage. Also returning is the CL65 AMG, a sledgehammer that packs a wallop with its 621-horsepower twinturbo V12. AMG models are outfitted with special brakes, chassis tuning and wheels, but all CL models will hit 60 mph in less than five seconds. The exterior design has been freshened by massaging the front grille and adding new tail lamps, LED turn indicators and marker lamps. Technology includes new Lane Keep Assist to warn drivers when their car is crossing a marked lane without signaling. Pre-Safe Braking partially takes over the pedal when the car’s forward-firing radar detects an imminent crash. Active Body Control, according to Mercedes-Benz, all but eliminates body “roll” and slightly lowers the car once its speed reaches 35 mph. The CL is one of the most advanced vehicles on the road, without even mentioning all of its luxury and convenience features.

Mini miniusa.com Hot news for 2011: Mini brand isn’t quite so mini anymore with its Cooper, Clubman and brand-new Countryman off-roader. • Countryman is the first Mini to offer all-wheel drive. • The same engines used in all Mini models, but small increases in power this year • Cooper and Clubman make a pitstop for trim updates. ■ Overall: Mini takes a turn for the bigger with its new four-door wagon that can be fitted with all-wheel drive. Drivetrain: Same revised power choices as the rest of the Mini fleet; a 122-horsepower, 1.6-liter I4 plus a turbo variant in the Countryman S is pegged at 184 horses. The Countryman will be the first four-door, all-wheel-drive-optional Mini when it arrives in early 2011. It also will be the biggest. Yet, when compared to any other funky-grade off-roader on the market, Countryman will still be the smallest of the bunch. Luckily, small doesn’t mean

crowded or cramped. The Countryman is about six inches taller than its siblings and is four inches wider. The rear doors are generously proportioned, allowing easy access for two adults, and a three-place rear bench also is offered. Opening the big rear hatch gains access to a decent-sized storage compartment. Each rear seat can be adjusted forward or aft 5 inches, for extra passenger leg room or cargo space. The control panel continues Mini’s circular display pod-theme in the middle of the dash containing the speedometer, fuel gauge, audio controls and optional navigation system. During normal driving conditions, the rear wheels are simply along for the ride. But under hard acceleration or when encountering slippery surfaces, as much as 100 percent of the engine’s torque can be diverted to the rear wheels. With more size, passenger room and go-anywhere capability, the Countryman is a big step in a whole new direction for the Mini brand.

Hot news for 2011: Outlander Sport chops more than a foot off the regular Outlander. • Great proportions and style reign. • Black roof for Eclipse coupe as well as a cut in base price. • Package shuffling adds a third-row seat to SE-equipped Outlanders at no charge. ■ Overall: Take a large bite out of the regular-size Mitsubishi Outlander, and you get an attractive little funster that won’t drain your gas cash reserves. Powertrain: A single 2.0-liter four-cylinder is geared for light lifting. A five-speed manual transmission comes only in the base models, but a continuously variable version connects to AWD models. The Outlander Sport is a spin-off of the current Outlander wagon. Both models use the same platform as the compact Lancer sedan, but with a 14.6-inch reduction in overall length reduction when compared to the Outlander, the Sport actually appears radically different. From stem to stern, the design is cohesive and

clean cut. It also works well with the Lancer Evolution-style, open-mouth nosepiece that Mitsubishi claims was inspired by jet fighter air intakes. The Sport’s optional all-wheel drive is controlled through a knob on the floor console. Under normal driving conditions, the vehicle remains in front-wheel-drive, but when tire slip is detected, as much as 70 percent of the engine’s torque can be directed to the back wheels. The AWD unit also can be set to the “lock” position that maintains a 60:40 torque split when the situation calls for maximum traction from all four wheels. The base Sport ES includes a goodly assortment of standard features that will please most bargain hunters. Opting for the $22,500 SE adds climate control, push-button start, rain-sensing wipers, upgraded seats and 18-inch alloy wheels (16-inch steel rims are standard). Among the suite of options are a mega-sized sunroof, mega-watt sound system and a navigation/rear-view camera combo.

Drivetrain: Nissan’s first-ever four-cylinder turbocharged engine delivers a healthy 188 ponies. Base six-speed manual gearbox only offered on front-wheel-drive versions. The Juke’s front end sports a pair of audaciously shaped fenders that dominate the overall look. The headlights appear countersunk into the nose between the bumper and grille, while the integrated turn-signal pods are positioned on either side of the hood. The five-passenger cabin confirms more freeform sculpting, especially the center console

that’s supposed to resemble a motorcycle fuel tank. The twin primary gauges are oversized, the sports car-style front seats are bolstered well, and the split-folding rear bench seat can be flattened to maximize cargo space. The available all-wheel drive splits the torque up to 50 percent between the front and rear wheels and can direct available rear-axle torque to the outside wheel for greater cornering stability. Base models include a six-speaker audio system with steering-wheel controls, Bluetooth shortrange wireless connectivity and 17-inch wheels. A wide assortment of optional features includes a power moonroof, keyless entry and start, leather-covered seats, navigation system with rear-view monitor and premium sound package. Nissan also has developed the Integrated Control option that runs the climate control and adjusts the chassis settings. I-CON manipulates the CVT transmission, electronic steering and throttle response to “normal” for everyday driving, “sport” for more performance, or “eco” for best fuel efficiency.

Hot news for 2011: Something fresh and exciting is offered in every one of Porsche’s four models. • Two new 911 models include a 620-horsepower GT2 RS and a Speedster. • Boxster Spyder chops features and weight in exchange for pure driving adventure. • New base V6 Panamera lowers the price and ups fuel economy. ■ Overall: This is about as far away from a traditional Porsche as it gets; Cayenne sport utility is bigger, more powerful, more capable, better looking — and lighter. Top models are scary quick, scary fast and scary capable. Drivetrain: With engines putting out 300 to 500 horsepower, including Porsche’s first hybrid model, all Cayennes come equipped with fulltime all-wheel drive. After eight years on the market, it was time for a redesign. The result is a Cayenne that’s larger and longer but doesn’t look it. Base models ditch the old 3.6-liter V6 for a

new Porsche-designed piece that produces 300 horsepower. S models use the familiar 4.8-liter V8 from the Panamera sedan that produces 400 horsepower, while the twin-turbocharged version of that V8 produces a nice, round 500 horsepower. While Porsche chopped 400 pounds off the gasoline-powered Cayennes, the S Hybrid puts those pounds right back on – and then some – thanks to the more complex powertrain and battery packs. Every Cayenne retains its superb off-road ability, thanks to standard ride-height control, locking differentials and a herd of electronic systems, such as hill-descent control and hill-hold. The interior is where Porsche shines, with Panamera-inspired touches such as a five-gauge instrument cluster and a heavily slanted center console and dash. The list of individual Cayenne options is astounding, everything from carbon-ceramic brakes to a high-end Burmeister-brand audio system.

Hot news for 2011: The rally-inspired WRX and WRX STi carry new sheetmetal and further cut ties with their Impreza roots. • Mostly carryover for the rest of the line in 2011.

■ Overall: More than ever, the WRX and its super-athlete WRX STi relation look more like rally champions. Drivetrain: Potent 2.5-liter, turbocharged fourcylinder engines make 265 to 305 horsepower, the latter exclusive to the STi. Subaru’s street-smart warriors should inspire greater interest. Both now share an aggressive front fascia, blacked-out grille and contoured fenders that readily set them apart from their 2010 counterparts. The rear fenders also have been accentuated. The physical transformation is striking, and for the first time, the STi now comes in a four-door sedan as well as hatchback. The only way to tell the two apart is by their rear wings, which are more prominent on the

STi. Another bonus for STi sedan buyers comes in the form of an extra-deep trunk the automaker claims will hold three full sets of golf clubs. The ride height has been slightly lowered and the front and rear stabilizer bars and springs beefed up. In addition, the standard 18-inch wheel package is now lighter by 17.6 pounds, and the optional BBS-brand wheels trim even more fat. Buying any Subaru means you automatically get an all-wheel-drive system that equally splits the torque between the front and rear wheels under normal operation. The STi’s SI-Drive adds a console-mounted rotary knob with three driver-selectable settings: "intelligent" for normal traffic conditions; "sport" for quicker throttle response and "sport sharp" for the quickest reaction. Along those same lines is an STi-exclusive traction-control system with both full-on and partial settings, depending on the level of control desired.

Fourcylinder power included in base models. • Avalon sedan freshens up its look for 2011. • Matrix and Corolla standing by for a mild makeover, with the possibility of a bit more power. ■ Overall: Toyota says don’t write off minivans just yet as a brand-new version of its roomy passenger and cargo hauler hits the streets. Drivetrain: A 187-horsepower four-cylinder becomes the new base engine, displacing the now-optional Camry-based 266-horsepower, 3.5liter V6. The latter is required when all-wheel drive is specified. As before, there’s seating for up to eight passengers, or seven if the optional second-row high-back chairs are selected to replace the three-person bench. On the top-level Sienna Limited, those chairs turn into reclining lounge seats that feature swing-up foot rests. The thirdrow bench folds flat into the load floor when

not needed. Along with being the only minivan available with optional all-wheel drive (frontwheel-drive is standard), the Sienna features a segment-exclusive four-cylinder base engine. The base Sienna and Sienna LE come with tri-zone air conditioning, multi-adjustable driver’s seat, tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, plus the usual power-controlled goodies. The SE includes a mesh-style grille, sporty body trim, taillights with tinted lenses, special instrumentation and interior trim, sport-tuned suspension and distinctive 19-inch wheels. The XLE features climate control, power moonroof, leather seats (heated in front) and powersliding side doors, while the high-styling Limited features living-large lounge chairs, keyless remote entry and push-button start, sliding first and second-row floor console, and a dual-sliding moonroof. A dual-view, 16.4-inch widescreen monitor that can display a single program, or two programs side by side from different sources, is optional.

The clean-sheet 2011 design displays a wellrounded nose that looks somewhat akin to that of the C30 hatchback coupe and XC60 wagon utility. Beneath the star-quality sheetmetal, the S60 is supported by a stiff new platform that increases the distance between the front and rear wheels for added

rear passenger space. The S60 can be ordered with one of three distinct chassis setups. The “touring” has been tuned for maximum ride comfort, while the focus of the firmer “dynamic” suspension is to respond quickly to a more aggressive driving style. The “four-c” activechassis option continuously monitors road conditions and adjusts suspension according to a trio of driverselectable settings. Stability control and traction control are standard. The former includes a roll-angle sensor that reacts more quickly than conventional programs. The S60 comes with the kind of electronic-collision warning and prevention devices featured on other premium automobiles (active cruise control, blind-spot and drowsy-driver alerts), as well as the first-ever use of pedestrian detection. The system includes a high-resolution camera that combines with a radar unit to detect people in front of the car. The S60 can avoid contact at speeds as fast as 22 mph by applying the brakes (or at least lessen the impact).
